अथाङ्गदस्तदा सर्वान् वानरानिदमब्रवीत् ।
परिश्रान्तो महाप्राज्ञः समाश्वास्य शनैर्वचः ॥१॥
1. athāṅgadastadā sarvān vānarānidamabravīt ,
pariśrānto mahāprājñaḥ samāśvāsya śanairvacaḥ.

1. Then, the greatly wise Angada, though weary, gently spoke these words to all the monkeys, having first comforted them.
वनानि गिरयो नद्यो दुर्गाणि गहनानि च ।
दर्यो गिरिगुहाश्चैव विचिता नः समन्ततः ॥२॥
2. vanāni girayo nadyo durgāṇi gahanāni ca ,
daryo giriguhāścaiva vicitā naḥ samantataḥ.
2. vanāni girayaḥ nadyaḥ durgāṇi gahanāni ca |
daryaḥ giriguhāḥ ca eva vicitāḥ naḥ samantataḥ
2. vanāni girayaḥ nadyaḥ durgāṇi gahanāni ca

2. Forests, mountains, rivers, inaccessible terrains, and dense thickets, as well as ravines and mountain-caves, have all been thoroughly explored by us from every side.
तत्र तत्र सहास्माभिर्जानकी न च दृश्यते ।
तद्वा रक्षो हृता येन सीता सुरसुतोपमा ॥३॥
3. tatra tatra sahāsmābhirjānakī na ca dṛśyate ,
tadvā rakṣo hṛtā yena sītā surasutopamā.
3. tatra tatra saha asmābhiḥ jānakī na ca dṛśyate
| tat vā rakṣaḥ hṛtā yena sītā surasutopamā
3. jānakī asmābhiḥ saha tatra tatra na dṛśyate
ca vā tat rakṣaḥ yena surasutopamā sītā hṛtā
3. Sita (Jānakī) is not seen anywhere with us. Or, it must be that demon by whom Sita, who is comparable to a daughter of the gods, was abducted.
कालश्च नो महान्यातः सुग्रीवश्चोग्रशासनः ।
तस्माद्भवन्तः सहिता विचिन्वन्तु समन्ततः ॥४॥
4. kālaśca no mahānyātaḥ sugrīvaścograśāsanaḥ ,
tasmādbhavantaḥ sahitā vicinvantu samantataḥ.
4. kālaḥ ca naḥ mahān yātaḥ sugrīvaḥ ca ugraśāsanaḥ
| tasmāt bhavantaḥ sahitāḥ vicinvantu samantataḥ
4. naḥ mahān kālaḥ yātaḥ ca sugrīvaḥ ugraśāsanaḥ ca
tasmāt sahitāḥ bhavantaḥ samantataḥ vicinvantu
4. Much time has passed for us, and Sugriva is one whose command is stern. Therefore, you all, united, should search everywhere.
विहाय तन्द्रीं शोकं च निद्रां चैव समुत्थिताम् ।
विचिनुध्वं यथा सीतां पश्यामो जनकात्मजाम् ॥५॥
5. vihāya tandrīṃ śokaṃ ca nidrāṃ caiva samutthitām ,
vicinudhvaṃ yathā sītāṃ paśyāmo janakātmajām.
5. vihāya tandrīm śokam ca nidrām ca eva samutthitām
| vicinudhvam yathā sītām paśyāmaḥ janakātmajām
5. tandrīm śokam ca samutthitām nidrām ca eva vihāya
vicinudhvam yathā janakātmajām sītām paśyāmaḥ
5. Abandoning idleness, grief, and the drowsiness that has overcome you, search so that we may find Sita, the daughter of Janaka.
अनिर्वेदं च दाक्ष्यं च मनसश्चापराजयम् ।
कार्यसिद्धिकराण्याहुस्तस्मादेतद्ब्रवीम्यहम् ॥६॥
6. anirvedaṃ ca dākṣyaṃ ca manasaścāparājayam ,
kāryasiddhikarāṇyāhustasmādetadbravīmyaham.
6. anirvedam ca dākṣyam ca manasaḥ ca aparājayam |
kāryasiddhikarāṇi āhuḥ tasmāt etat bravīmi aham
6. anirvedam ca dākṣyam ca manasaḥ aparājayam ca
kāryasiddhikarāṇi āhuḥ tasmāt aham etat bravīmi
6. Freedom from despair, competence, and the invincibility of the mind - these, they say, lead to the successful accomplishment of tasks. Therefore, I tell you this.
अद्यापीदं वनं दुर्गं विचिन्वन्तु वनौकसः ।
खेदं त्यक्त्वा पुनः सर्वं वनमेतद्विचीयताम् ॥७॥
7. adyāpīdaṃ vanaṃ durgaṃ vicinvantu vanaukasaḥ ,
khedaṃ tyaktvā punaḥ sarvaṃ vanametadvicīyatām.
7. adya api idam vanam durgam vicinvantu vanaukasaḥ
khedam tyaktvā punaḥ sarvam vanam etat vicīyatām
7. vanaukasaḥ adya api idam durgam vanam vicinvantu
khedam tyaktvā punaḥ etat sarvam vanam vicīyatām
7. Let the forest dwellers continue to search this difficult forest even now. Giving up their fatigue, let this entire forest be thoroughly searched again.
अवश्यं क्रियमाणस्य दृश्यते कर्मणः फलम् ।
अलं निर्वेदमागम्य न हि नो मलिनं क्षमम् ॥८॥
8. avaśyaṃ kriyamāṇasya dṛśyate karmaṇaḥ phalam ,
alaṃ nirvedamāgamya na hi no malinaṃ kṣamam.
8. avaśyam kriyamāṇasya dṛśyate karmaṇaḥ phalam
alam nirvedam āgamya na hi naḥ malinam kṣamam
8. karmaṇaḥ kriyamāṇasya phalam avaśyam dṛśyate
alam nirvedam āgamya na hi naḥ malinam kṣamam
8. Certainly, the result of an action being performed is seen. Therefore, do not yield to despondency, for such a stained (mental state) is certainly not suitable for us.
सुग्रीवः क्रोधनो राजा तीक्ष्णदण्डश्च वानराः ।
भेतव्यं तस्य सततं रामस्य च महात्मनः ॥९॥
9. sugrīvaḥ krodhano rājā tīkṣṇadaṇḍaśca vānarāḥ ,
bhetavyaṃ tasya satataṃ rāmasya ca mahātmanaḥ.
9. sugrīvaḥ krodhanaḥ rājā tīkṣṇadaṇḍaḥ ca vānarāḥ
bhetavyam tasya satatam rāmasya ca mahātmanaḥ
9. vānarāḥ sugrīvaḥ krodhanaḥ rājā ca tīkṣṇadaṇḍaḥ
satatam tasya ca mahātmanaḥ rāmasya bhetavyam
9. O monkeys, King Sugriva is wrathful and metes out severe punishment. You should constantly fear him, and also the great-souled Rama.
हितार्थमेतदुक्तं वः क्रियतां यदि रोचते ।
उच्यतां वा क्षमं यन्नः सर्वेषामेव वानराः ॥१०॥
10. hitārthametaduktaṃ vaḥ kriyatāṃ yadi rocate ,
ucyatāṃ vā kṣamaṃ yannaḥ sarveṣāmeva vānarāḥ.
10. hitārtham etat uktam vaḥ kriyatām yadi rocate
ucyatām vā kṣamam yat naḥ sarveṣām eva vānarāḥ
10. vānarāḥ etat vaḥ hitārtham uktam yadi rocate
kriyatām vā yat naḥ sarveṣām eva kṣamam ucyatām
10. O monkeys, this has been spoken for your well-being. Let it be done if it pleases you, or let that be said which is suitable for all of us.
अङ्गदस्य वचः श्रुत्वा वचनं गन्धमादनः ।
उवाचाव्यक्तया वाचा पिपासा श्रमखिन्नया ॥११॥
11. aṅgadasya vacaḥ śrutvā vacanaṃ gandhamādanaḥ ,
uvācāvyaktayā vācā pipāsā śramakhinnayā.
11. aṅgadasya vacaḥ śrutvā vacanam gandhamādanaḥ
uvāca avyaktayā vācā pipāsāśramakhinnayā
11. Hearing Angada's words, Gandhamadana spoke with an indistinct voice, one wearied by thirst and exhaustion.
सदृशं खलु वो वाक्यमङ्गदो यदुवाच ह ।
हितं चैवानुकूलं च क्रियतामस्य भाषितम् ॥१२॥
12. sadṛśaṃ khalu vo vākyamaṅgado yaduvāca ha ,
hitaṃ caivānukūlaṃ ca kriyatāmasya bhāṣitam.
12. sadṛśam khalu vaḥ vākyam aṅgadaḥ yat uvāca ha
hitam ca eva anukūlam ca kriyatām asya bhāṣitam
12. Indeed, Angada's words are appropriate for you. His advice, being both beneficial and agreeable, should be followed.
पुनर्मार्गामहे शैलान् कन्दरांश्च दरीस्तथा ।
काननानि च शून्यानि गिरिप्रस्रवणानि च ॥१३॥
13. punarmārgāmahe śailān kandarāṃśca darīstathā ,
kānanāni ca śūnyāni giriprasravaṇāni ca.
13. punaḥ mārgāmahe śailān kandarān ca darīḥ
tathā kānanāni ca śūnyāni giriprasravaṇāni ca
13. Let us search again the mountains, caves, and ravines, and also the desolate forests and mountain springs.
यथोद्दिष्ठानि सर्वाणि सुग्रीवेण महात्मना ।
विचिन्वन्तु वनं सर्वे गिरिदुर्गाणि सर्वशः ॥१४॥
14. yathoddiṣṭhāni sarvāṇi sugrīveṇa mahātmanā ,
vicinvantu vanaṃ sarve giridurgāṇi sarvaśaḥ.
14. yathā uddiṣṭāni sarvāṇi sugrīveṇa mahātmanā
vicinvantu vanam sarve giridurgāṇi sarvaśaḥ
14. Let all search the forest and mountain strongholds thoroughly, just as they were instructed by the great-souled (mahātman) Sugriva.
ततः समुत्थाय पुनर्वानरास्ते महाबलाः ।
विन्ध्यकाननसंकीर्णां विचेरुर्दक्षिणां दिशम् ॥१५॥
15. tataḥ samutthāya punarvānarāste mahābalāḥ ,
vindhyakānanasaṃkīrṇāṃ vicerurdakṣiṇāṃ diśam.
15. tataḥ samutthāya punaḥ vānarāḥ te mahābalāḥ
vindhyakānanasaṃkīrṇām viceruḥ dakṣiṇām diśam
15. tataḥ te mahābalāḥ vānarāḥ punaḥ samutthāya
vindhyakānanasaṃkīrṇām dakṣiṇām diśam viceruḥ
15. Then, those mighty monkeys, having risen again, searched the southern direction, which was dense with the forests of the Vindhya mountains.
ते शारदाभ्रप्रतिमं श्रीमद्रजतपर्वतम् ।
शृङ्गवन्तं दरीवन्तमधिरुह्य च वानराः ॥१६॥
16. te śāradābhrapratimaṃ śrīmadrajataparvatam ,
śṛṅgavantaṃ darīvantamadhiruhya ca vānarāḥ.
16. te śāradābhrapratimam śrīmat rajataparvatam
śṛṅgavantaṃ darīvantam adhiruhya ca vānarāḥ
16. ca te vānarāḥ śāradābhrapratimam śrīmat
śṛṅgavantaṃ darīvantam rajataparvatam adhiruhya
16. And those monkeys, having climbed that splendid silver mountain, which resembled an autumn cloud and possessed peaks and caves...
तत्र लोध्रवनं रम्यं सप्तपर्णवनानि च ।
विचिन्वन्तो हरिवराः सीतादर्शनकाङ्क्षिणः ॥१७॥
17. tatra lodhravanaṃ ramyaṃ saptaparṇavanāni ca ,
vicinvanto harivarāḥ sītādarśanakāṅkṣiṇaḥ.
17. tatra lodhravanam ramyam saptaparṇavanāni ca
vicinvantaḥ harivarāḥ sītādarśanakāṅkṣiṇaḥ
17. tatra sītādarśanakāṅkṣiṇaḥ harivarāḥ ramyam
lodhravanam ca saptaparṇavanāni vicinvantaḥ
17. There, the best of the monkeys, eager to see Sītā, searched through beautiful lodhra forests and saptaparṇa groves.
तस्याग्रमधिरूढास्ते श्रान्ता विपुलविक्रमाः ।
न पश्यन्ति स्म वैदेहीं रामस्य महिषीं प्रियाम् ॥१८॥
18. tasyāgramadhirūḍhāste śrāntā vipulavikramāḥ ,
na paśyanti sma vaidehīṃ rāmasya mahiṣīṃ priyām.
18. tasya agram adhirūḍhāḥ te śrāntāḥ vipulavikramāḥ
na paśyanti sma vaidehīm rāmasya mahiṣīm priyām
18. te vipulavikramāḥ tasya agram adhirūḍhāḥ śrāntāḥ
rāmasya priyām mahiṣīm vaidehīm na paśyanti sma
18. Those monkeys, despite their great prowess, having ascended its summit, were tired, but they did not see Vaidehī (Sītā), Rāma's beloved queen.
ते तु दृष्टिगतं कृत्वा तं शैलं बहुकन्दरम् ।
अवारोहन्त हरयो वीक्षमाणाः समन्ततः ॥१९॥
19. te tu dṛṣṭigataṃ kṛtvā taṃ śailaṃ bahukandaram ,
avārohanta harayo vīkṣamāṇāḥ samantataḥ.
19. te tu dṛṣṭigatam kṛtvā tam śailam bahukandaram
avārohanta harayaḥ vīkṣamāṇāḥ samantataḥ
19. te harayaḥ tu tam bahukandaram śailam dṛṣṭigatam
kṛtvā samantataḥ vīkṣamāṇāḥ avārohanta
19. Having caught sight of that mountain with many caves, the monkeys then descended, surveying the area all around them.
अवरुह्य ततो भूमिं श्रान्ता विगतचेतसः ।
स्थित्वा मुहूर्तं तत्राथ वृक्षमूलमुपाश्रिताः ॥२०॥
20. avaruhya tato bhūmiṃ śrāntā vigatacetasaḥ ,
sthitvā muhūrtaṃ tatrātha vṛkṣamūlamupāśritāḥ.
20. avaruhya tataḥ bhūmim śrāntāḥ vigatacetasaḥ
sthitvā muhūrtam tatra atha vṛkṣamūlam upāśritāḥ
20. tataḥ bhūmim avaruhya śrāntāḥ vigatacetasaḥ
tatra muhūrtam sthitvā atha vṛkṣamūlam upāśritāḥ
20. Having descended from there to the ground, weary and disheartened, they stayed there for a moment, and then took shelter at the base of a tree.
ते मुहूर्तं समाश्वस्ताः किं चिद्भग्नपरिश्रमाः ।
पुनरेवोद्यताः कृत्स्नां मार्गितुं दक्षिणां दिशम् ॥२१॥
21. te muhūrtaṃ samāśvastāḥ kiṃ cidbhagnapariśramāḥ ,
punarevodyatāḥ kṛtsnāṃ mārgituṃ dakṣiṇāṃ diśam.
21. te muhūrtam samāśvastāḥ kim cit bhagnapariśramāḥ
punaḥ eva udyatāḥ kṛtsnām mārgitum dakṣiṇām diśam
21. te muhūrtam samāśvastāḥ kiṃ cit bhagnapariśramāḥ
punaḥ eva kṛtsnām dakṣiṇām diśam mārgitum udyatāḥ
21. Having rested for a moment, and with their fatigue somewhat relieved, they were again prepared to search the entire southern direction.
हनुमत्प्रमुखास्ते तु प्रस्थिताः प्लवगर्षभाः ।
विन्ध्यमेवादितस्तावद्विचेरुस्ते समन्ततः ॥२२॥
22. hanumatpramukhāste tu prasthitāḥ plavagarṣabhāḥ ,
vindhyamevāditastāvadviceruste samantataḥ.
22. hanumatpramukhāḥ te tu prasthitāḥ plavagarṣabhāḥ
vindhyam eva āditaḥ tāvat viceruḥ te samantataḥ
22. hanumatpramukhāḥ te plavagarṣabhāḥ tu prasthitāḥ.
te vindhyam eva āditaḥ tāvat samantataḥ viceruḥ
22. Those foremost among the monkeys, headed by (Hanumat), then set out. They first extensively explored the Vindhya (mountain) all around.
