तमुक्तवन्तं वैदेहं विश्वामित्रो महामुनिः ।
उवाच वचनं वीरं वसिष्ठसहितो नृपम् ॥१॥

1. The great sage Vishvamitra, accompanied by Vasishtha, spoke these words to that heroic King of Videha who had just spoken.
अचिन्त्यान्यप्रमेयानि कुलानि नरपुंगव ।
इक्ष्वाकूणां विदेहानां नैषां तुल्यो ऽस्ति कश्चन ॥२॥
2. acintyānyaprameyāni kulāni narapuṃgava ,
ikṣvākūṇāṃ videhānāṃ naiṣāṃ tulyo'sti kaścana.

ikṣvākūṇām videhānām na eṣām tulyaḥ asti kaścana

2. O best among men (narapuṅgava), the lineages of the Ikṣvākus and the Videhas are inconceivable and immeasurable. No one is comparable to them.
सदृशो धर्मसंबन्धः सदृशो रूपसंपदा ।
रामलक्ष्मणयो राजन् सीता चोर्मिलया सह ॥३॥
3. sadṛśo dharmasaṃbandhaḥ sadṛśo rūpasaṃpadā ,
rāmalakṣmaṇayo rājan sītā cormilayā saha.

3. O king (rājan), the connection is fitting regarding their intrinsic nature (dharma-saṃbandha) and their wealth of beauty (rūpasaṃpad), for Rāma and Lakṣmaṇa, and for Sītā along with Ūrmilā.
वक्तव्यं च नरश्रेष्ठ
श्रूयतां वचनं मम ॥४॥
4. vaktavyaṃ ca naraśreṣṭha
śrūyatāṃ vacanaṃ mama.

4. And what is to be said, O best among men (narashreṣṭha), let my words (vacana) be heard.
भ्राता यवीयान्धर्मज्ञ एष राजा कुशध्वजः ।
अस्य धर्मात्मनो राजन् रूपेणाप्रतिमं भुवि ।
सुताद्वयं नरश्रेष्ठ पत्न्यर्थं वरयामहे ॥५॥
5. bhrātā yavīyāndharmajña eṣa rājā kuśadhvajaḥ ,
asya dharmātmano rājan rūpeṇāpratimaṃ bhuvi ,
sutādvayaṃ naraśreṣṭha patnyarthaṃ varayāmahe.

narashreṣṭha (vayam tāḥ) patnyartham varayāmahe
5. O king (rājan), this is my younger brother, King Kuśadhvaja, a knower of (natural law) dharma. Of this righteous (dharmātman) king, his two daughters, O best among men (narashreṣṭha), are unrivaled in beauty (rūpeṇa) on earth (bhuvi). We seek them for wives (patnī-artha).
भरतस्य कुमारस्य शत्रुघ्नस्य च धीमतः ।
वरयेम सुते राजंस्तयोरर्थे महात्मनोः ॥६॥
6. bharatasya kumārasya śatrughnasya ca dhīmataḥ ,
varayema sute rājaṃstayorarthe mahātmanoḥ.

6. O King, we would like to choose your two daughters for the sake of these great-souled ones, namely Prince Bharata and the intelligent Shatrughna.
पुत्रा दशरथस्येमे रूपयौवनशालिनः ।
लोकपालोपमाः सर्वे देवतुल्यपराक्रमाः ॥७॥
7. putrā daśarathasyeme rūpayauvanaśālinaḥ ,
lokapālopamāḥ sarve devatulyaparākramāḥ.

7. These sons of Dasharatha are endowed with beauty and youth; all of them are comparable to the guardians of the world and possess valor equal to the gods.
उभयोरपि राजेन्द्र संबन्धेनानुबध्यताम् ।
इक्ष्वाकुकुलमव्यग्रं भवतः पुण्यकर्मणः ॥८॥
8. ubhayorapi rājendra saṃbandhenānubadhyatām ,
ikṣvākukulamavyagraṃ bhavataḥ puṇyakarmaṇaḥ.
8. ubhayoḥ api rājendra sambandhena anubadhyatām
ikṣvākukulam avyagram bhavataḥ puṇyakarmaṇaḥ

8. O King of Kings, let the unwavering Ikshvaku dynasty be bound by a relationship with both (families) to your virtuous self.
विश्वामित्रवचः श्रुत्वा वसिष्ठस्य मते तदा ।
जनकः प्राञ्जलिर्वाक्यमुवाच मुनिपुंगवौ ॥९॥
9. viśvāmitravacaḥ śrutvā vasiṣṭhasya mate tadā ,
janakaḥ prāñjalirvākyamuvāca munipuṃgavau.

9. Then, having heard the words of Vishvamitra and considering the counsel of Vasiṣṭha, Janaka, with folded hands, spoke to the two foremost sages.
सदृशं कुलसंबन्धं यदाज्ञापयथः स्वयम् ।
एवं भवतु भद्रं वः कुशध्वजसुते इमे ।
पत्न्यौ भजेतां सहितौ शत्रुघ्नभरताव् उभौ ॥१०॥
10. sadṛśaṃ kulasaṃbandhaṃ yadājñāpayathaḥ svayam ,
evaṃ bhavatu bhadraṃ vaḥ kuśadhvajasute ime ,
patnyau bhajetāṃ sahitau śatrughnabharatāv ubhau.
10. sadṛśam kulasambandham yat ājñāpayathaḥ
svayam evam bhavatu bhadram
vaḥ kuśadhvajasute ime patnyau
bhajetām sahitau śatrughnabharatau ubhau
10. vaḥ bhadram bhavatu.
svayam yat sadṛśam kulasambandham ājñāpayathaḥ,
evam (astu).
ime kuśadhvajasute sahitau ubhau śatrughnabharatau patnyau bhajetām.
10. As you yourselves command concerning this suitable family connection, so be it. May good fortune be upon you. Let these two daughters of Kuśadhvaja become the wives, together, of both Śatrughna and Bharata.
एकाह्ना राजपुत्रीणां चतसृणां महामुने ।
पाणीन् गृह्णन्तु चत्वारो राजपुत्रा महाबलाः ॥११॥
11. ekāhnā rājaputrīṇāṃ catasṛṇāṃ mahāmune ,
pāṇīn gṛhṇantu catvāro rājaputrā mahābalāḥ.
11. ekāhnā rājaputrīṇām catasṛṇām mahāmune
pāṇīn gṛhṇantu catvāraḥ rājaputrāḥ mahābalāḥ
11. mahāmune,
catvāraḥ mahābalāḥ rājaputrāḥ ekāhnā catasṛṇām rājaputrīṇām pāṇīn gṛhṇantu.
11. O great sage, let the four powerful princes take the hands (marry) of the four princesses in a single day.
उत्तरे दिवसे ब्रह्मन्फल्गुनीभ्यां मनीषिणः ।
वैवाहिकं प्रशंसन्ति भगो यत्र प्रजापतिः ॥१२॥
12. uttare divase brahmanphalgunībhyāṃ manīṣiṇaḥ ,
vaivāhikaṃ praśaṃsanti bhago yatra prajāpatiḥ.
12. uttare divase brahman phalgunībhyām manīṣiṇaḥ
vaivāhikam praśaṃsanti bhagaḥ yatra prajāpatiḥ
12. brahman,
uttare divase manīṣiṇaḥ phalgunībhyām vaivāhikam praśaṃsanti,
yatra bhagaḥ prajāpatiḥ (asti).
12. O Brahmin, on the next day, the wise ones praise (the time associated) with the Phalgunī (nakṣatra) as auspicious for marriage, where Bhaga is the lord of creation (prajāpati).
एवमुक्त्वा वचः सौम्यं प्रत्युत्थाय कृताञ्जलिः ।
उभौ मुनिवरौ राजा जनको वाक्यमब्रवीत् ॥१३॥
13. evamuktvā vacaḥ saumyaṃ pratyutthāya kṛtāñjaliḥ ,
ubhau munivarau rājā janako vākyamabravīt.
13. evam uktvā vacaḥ saumyam pratyutthāya kṛtāñjaliḥ
ubhau munivarau rājā janakaḥ vākyam abravīt
13. rājā janakaḥ evam saumyam vacaḥ uktvā,
pratyutthāya,
kṛtāñjaliḥ ubhau munivarau vākyam abravīt.
13. Having spoken such gentle words, King Janaka stood up, and with joined hands (in respect), addressed both excellent sages.
परो धर्मः कृतो मह्यं शिष्यो ऽस्मि भवतोः सदा ।
इमान्यासनमुख्यानि आसेतां मुनिपुंगवौ ॥१४॥
14. paro dharmaḥ kṛto mahyaṃ śiṣyo'smi bhavatoḥ sadā ,
imānyāsanamukhyāni āsetāṃ munipuṃgavau.
14. paraḥ dharmaḥ kṛtaḥ mahyam śiṣyaḥ asmi bhavatoḥ
sadā | imāni āsanamukhyāni āsetām munipuṅgavau
14. mahyam paraḥ dharmaḥ kṛtaḥ sadā bhavatoḥ śiṣyaḥ
asmi munipuṅgavau imāni āsanamukhyāni āsetām
14. A supreme righteous act (dharma) has been performed for me, and I am always your disciple. O foremost among sages, please be seated on these excellent seats.
यथा दशरथस्येयं तथायोध्या पुरी मम ।
प्रभुत्वे नासित् संदेहो यथार्हं कर्तुमर्हथः ॥१५॥
15. yathā daśarathasyeyaṃ tathāyodhyā purī mama ,
prabhutve nāsit saṃdeho yathārhaṃ kartumarhathaḥ.
15. yathā daśarathasya iyam tathā ayodhyā purī mama |
prabhutve na āsīt saṃdehaḥ yathārham kartum arhathaḥ
15. yathā iyam daśarathasya tathā ayodhyā purī mama
prabhutve saṃdehaḥ na āsīt yathārham kartum arhathaḥ
15. Just as this (Mithila) is at Daśaratha's command, so too Ayodhyā city is like my own (due to our affection). Regarding your authority (prabhutva) here, there was no doubt; you two should do whatever is fitting.
तथा ब्रुवति वैदेहे जनके रघुनन्दनः ।
राजा दशरथो हृष्टः प्रत्युवाच महीपतिम् ॥१६॥
16. tathā bruvati vaidehe janake raghunandanaḥ ,
rājā daśaratho hṛṣṭaḥ pratyuvāca mahīpatim.

rājā daśarathaḥ hṛṣṭaḥ pratyuvāca mahīpatim
16. janake vaidehe tathā bruvati raghunandanaḥ

16. While Janaka, the King of Videha, was speaking thus, King Daśaratha, a gladdened descendant of Raghu, replied to that lord of the earth.
युवामसंख्येय गुणौ भ्रातरौ मिथिलेश्वरौ ।
ऋषयो राजसंघाश्च भवद्भ्यामभिपूजिताः ॥१७॥
17. yuvāmasaṃkhyeya guṇau bhrātarau mithileśvarau ,
ṛṣayo rājasaṃghāśca bhavadbhyāmabhipūjitāḥ.
17. yuvām asaṃkhyeya guṇau bhrātarau mithileśvarau
| ṛṣayaḥ rājasaṃghāḥ ca bhavadbhyām abhipūjitāḥ
17. yuvām asaṃkhyeya guṇau bhrātarau mithileśvarau

17. You two, O brothers, lords of Mithila, are endowed with innumerable qualities. Sages and assemblies of kings have been honored by you both.
स्वस्ति प्राप्नुहि भद्रं ते गमिष्यामि स्वमालयम् ।
श्राद्धकर्माणि सर्वाणि विधास्य इति चाब्रवीत् ॥१८॥
18. svasti prāpnuhi bhadraṃ te gamiṣyāmi svamālayam ,
śrāddhakarmāṇi sarvāṇi vidhāsya iti cābravīt.
18. svasti prāpnuhi bhadram te gamiṣyāmi svam ālayam
śrāddhakarmāṇi sarvāṇi vidhāsye iti ca abravīt
18. te svasti prāpnuhi,
bhadram.
(aham) svam ālayam gamiṣyāmi.
ca abravīt iti (yat) sarvāṇi śrāddhakarmāṇi vidhāsye.
18. May you attain welfare; good fortune be to you. I will go to my own abode. 'I shall perform all the ancestral rites (śrāddha) ceremonies,' thus he also said.
तमापृष्ट्वा नरपतिं राजा दशरथस्तदा ।
मुनीन्द्रौ तौ पुरस्कृत्य जगामाशु महायशाः ॥१९॥
19. tamāpṛṣṭvā narapatiṃ rājā daśarathastadā ,
munīndrau tau puraskṛtya jagāmāśu mahāyaśāḥ.
19. tam āpṛṣṭvā narapatim rājā daśarathaḥ tadā
munīndrau tau puraskṛtya jagāma āśu mahāyaśāḥ
19. tada mahāyaśāḥ rājā daśarathaḥ tam narapatim āpṛṣṭvā,
tau munīndrau puraskṛtya,
āśu jagāma.
19. Having bid farewell to that king (narapati), King Daśaratha, the greatly renowned one, then quickly departed, leading those two chief sages (munīndrau).
स गत्वा निलयं राजा श्राद्धं कृत्वा विधानतः ।
प्रभाते काल्यमुत्थाय चक्रे गोदानमुत्तमम् ॥२०॥
20. sa gatvā nilayaṃ rājā śrāddhaṃ kṛtvā vidhānataḥ ,
prabhāte kālyamutthāya cakre godānamuttamam.
20. sa gatvā nilayam rājā śrāddham kṛtvā vidhānataḥ
prabhāte kālyam utthāya cakre godānam uttamam
20. saḥ rājā nilayam gatvā,
vidhānataḥ śrāddham kṛtvā,
prabhāte kālyam utthāya,
uttamam godānam cakre.
20. That king, having gone to his abode and performed the ancestral rites (śrāddha) according to the prescribed rules, rose early in the morning and performed an excellent cow-gift (dāna).
गवां शतसहस्राणि ब्राह्मणेभ्यो नराधिपः ।
एकैकशो ददौ राजा पुत्रानुद्धिश्य धर्मतः ॥२१॥
21. gavāṃ śatasahasrāṇi brāhmaṇebhyo narādhipaḥ ,
ekaikaśo dadau rājā putrānuddhiśya dharmataḥ.
21. gavām śatasahasrāṇi brāhmaṇebhyaḥ narādhipaḥ
ekaikaśaḥ dadau rājā putrān uddiśya dharmataḥ
21. narādhipaḥ rājā dharmataḥ putrān uddiśya,
ekaikaśaḥ gavām śatasahasrāṇi brāhmaṇebhyaḥ dadau.
21. The lord of men (narādhipaḥ), the king, gave hundreds of thousands of cows to the Brahmins, one by one, for the sake of his sons and in accordance with his intrinsic nature (dharma).
सुवर्णशृङ्गाः संपन्नाः सवत्साः कांस्यदोहनाः ।
गवां शतसहस्राणि चत्वारि पुरुषर्षभः ॥२२॥
22. suvarṇaśṛṅgāḥ saṃpannāḥ savatsāḥ kāṃsyadohanāḥ ,
gavāṃ śatasahasrāṇi catvāri puruṣarṣabhaḥ.
22. suvarṇaśṛṅgāḥ saṃpannāḥ savatsāḥ kāṃsyadohanāḥ
gavāṃ śatasahasrāṇi catvāri puruṣarṣabhaḥ
22. puruṣarṣabhaḥ catvāri śatasahasrāṇi gavāṃ
suvarṇaśṛṅgāḥ saṃpannāḥ savatsāḥ kāṃsyadohanāḥ
22. The bull among men (puruṣarṣabha) [the king] gave four hundred thousand cows, complete with golden horns, their calves, and bronze milking vessels.
वित्तमन्यच्च सुबहु द्विजेभ्यो रघुनन्दनः ।
ददौ गोदानमुद्दिश्य पुत्राणां पुत्रवत्सलः ॥२३॥
23. vittamanyacca subahu dvijebhyo raghunandanaḥ ,
dadau godānamuddiśya putrāṇāṃ putravatsalaḥ.
23. vittam anyat ca subahu dvijebhyaḥ raghunandanaḥ
dadau godānam uddiśya putrāṇāṃ putravatsalaḥ
23. raghunandanaḥ putravatsalaḥ ca anyat subahu
vittam dvijebhyaḥ putrāṇāṃ godānam uddiśya dadau
23. And the delight of Raghu (raghunandana), affectionate towards his sons, gave much other wealth to the twice-born (dvija), with the cow-giving (godāna) (ceremony) of his sons in mind.
स सुतैः कृतगोदानैर्वृतश्च नृपतिस्तदा ।
लोकपालैरिवाभाति वृतः सौम्यः प्रजापतिः ॥२४॥
24. sa sutaiḥ kṛtagodānairvṛtaśca nṛpatistadā ,
lokapālairivābhāti vṛtaḥ saumyaḥ prajāpatiḥ.
24. sa sutaiḥ kṛtagodānaiḥ vṛtaḥ ca nṛpatiḥ tadā
lokapālaiḥ iva ābhāti vṛtaḥ saumyaḥ prajāpatiḥ
24. sa nṛpatiḥ ca tadā sutaiḥ kṛtagodānaiḥ vṛtaḥ
saumyaḥ prajāpatiḥ lokapālaiḥ iva vṛtaḥ ābhāti
24. And that king, surrounded by his sons who had performed the cow-giving (godāna) (ceremony), then shone like the gentle lord of creatures (prajāpati) surrounded by the world-protectors (lokapāla).
