विशेषेण तु सुग्रीवो हनुमत्यर्थमुक्तवान् ।

1. viśeṣeṇa tu sugrīvo hanumatyarthamuktavān ,

But Sugrīva specifically spoke to Hanumān about the objective. For he (Sugrīva) was indeed confident in that best of monkeys for accomplishing the task.
न भूमौ नान्तरिक्षे वा नाम्बरे नामरालये ।
नाप्सु वा गतिसंगं ते पश्यामि हरिपुंगव ॥२॥

2. na bhūmau nāntarikṣe vā nāmbare nāmarālaye ,
nāpsu vā gatisaṃgaṃ te paśyāmi haripuṃgava.

O best of monkeys, I see no impediment to your movement either on the earth, or in the intermediate space, or in the sky, or in the abode of the gods, or in the waters.
सासुराः सहगन्धर्वाः सनागनरदेवताः ।
विदिताः सर्वलोकास्ते ससागरधराधराः ॥३॥

3. sāsurāḥ sahagandharvāḥ sanāganaradevatāḥ ,

All those worlds are known, along with their asuras, gandharvas, nāgas, humans, and deities, as well as their oceans and mountains.
गतिर्वेगश्च तेजश्च लाघवं च महाकपे ।
पितुस्ते सदृशं वीर मारुतस्य महौजसः ॥४॥

4. gatirvegaśca tejaśca lāghavaṃ ca mahākape ,
pituste sadṛśaṃ vīra mārutasya mahaujasaḥ.

gatiḥ vegaḥ ca tejaḥ ca lāghavam ca mahākape

O great monkey, O hero, your speed, velocity, power, and agility are truly like those of your father Māruta, the mighty one.
तेजसा वापि ते भूतं समं भुवि न विद्यते ।
तद् यथा लभ्यते सीता तत्त्वमेवोपपादय ॥५॥
तद् यथा लभ्यते सीता तत्त्वमेवोपपादय ॥५॥
5. tejasā vāpi te bhūtaṃ samaṃ bhuvi na vidyate ,
tad yathā labhyate sītā tattvamevopapādaya.

There is no being on earth equal to you in power, or perhaps even in any other respect. Therefore, you alone must devise the means by which Sītā can be found.
त्वय्येव हनुमन्नस्ति बलं बुद्धिः पराक्रमः ।
देशकालानुवृत्तश्च नयश्च नयपण्डित ॥६॥

6. tvayyeva hanumannasti balaṃ buddhiḥ parākramaḥ ,
deśakālānuvṛttaśca nayaśca nayapaṇḍita.

O Hanumān, in you alone exist strength, wisdom, and valor. And you are an expert in statesmanship (naya), possessing prudence that adapts to the specific place and time.
ततः कार्यसमासंगमवगम्य हनूमति ।
विदित्वा हनुमन्तं च चिन्तयामास राघवः ॥७॥

7. tataḥ kāryasamāsaṃgamavagamya hanūmati ,
viditvā hanumantaṃ ca cintayāmāsa rāghavaḥ.

Then, having ascertained Hanumān's complete commitment to the mission, and having thereby fully recognized Hanumān's character, Rāghava (Rāma) reflected.
सर्वथा निश्चितार्थो ऽयं हनूमति हरीश्वरः ।
निश्चितार्थतरश्चापि हनूमान् कार्यसाधने ॥८॥

8. sarvathā niścitārtho'yaṃ hanūmati harīśvaraḥ ,
niścitārthataraścāpi hanūmān kāryasādhane.

The lord of monkeys (Rāma) was absolutely confident about Hanumān. Moreover, Hanumān himself was even more resolute in accomplishing the mission.
तदेवं प्रस्थितस्यास्य परिज्ञातस्य कर्मभिः ।
भर्त्रा परिगृहीतस्य ध्रुवः कार्यफलोदयः ॥९॥

9. tadevaṃ prasthitasyāsya parijñātasya karmabhiḥ ,
bhartrā parigṛhītasya dhruvaḥ kāryaphalodayaḥ.

tat evam prasthitasya asya parijñātasya karmabhiḥ

Therefore, for this one (Hanumān), who has set forth, whose character has been thoroughly understood through his actions (karma), and who has been accepted by his lord, the successful outcome of the mission is assured.
तं समीक्ष्य महातेजा व्यवसायोत्तरं हरिम् ।
कृतार्थ इव संवृत्तः प्रहृष्टेन्द्रियमानसः ॥१०॥

10. taṃ samīkṣya mahātejā vyavasāyottaraṃ harim ,
kṛtārtha iva saṃvṛttaḥ prahṛṣṭendriyamānasaḥ.

Upon seeing that monkey (Hanumān), who was supremely resolute, the greatly energetic (Rāma) felt as if his own purpose had been achieved, and his senses and mind were greatly delighted.
ददौ तस्य ततः प्रीतः स्वनामाङ्कोपशोभितम् ।
अङ्गुलीयमभिज्ञानं राजपुत्र्याः परंतपः ॥११॥

11. dadau tasya tataḥ prītaḥ svanāmāṅkopaśobhitam ,
aṅgulīyamabhijñānaṃ rājaputryāḥ paraṃtapaḥ.

Then, pleased, Rāma, the scorcher of foes, gave him a ring, adorned with his own name, as a token of recognition for the princess (Sītā).
अनेन त्वां हरिश्रेष्ठ चिह्नेन जनकात्मजा ।
मत्सकाशादनुप्राप्तमनुद्विग्नानुपश्यति ॥१२॥

O best of monkeys (Hanumān), by means of this token, Janaka's daughter (Sītā) will perceive you, who have arrived from my presence, without any apprehension.

सुग्रीवस्य च संदेशः सिद्धिं कथयतीव मे ॥१३॥

13. vyavasāyaśca te vīra sattvayuktaśca vikramaḥ ,
sugrīvasya ca saṃdeśaḥ siddhiṃ kathayatīva me.

O hero (Hanumān), your resolute effort, your valor accompanied by courage, and Sugrīva's message - all these, as it were, speak of success to me.
स तद्गृह्य हरिश्रेष्ठः स्थाप्य मूर्ध्नि कृताञ्जलिः ।
वन्दित्वा चरणौ चैव प्रस्थितः प्लवगोत्तमः ॥१४॥

14. sa tadgṛhya hariśreṣṭhaḥ sthāpya mūrdhni kṛtāñjaliḥ ,

14.
That best of monkeys (Hanumān), having taken that (ring), placed it on his head; and with folded hands, having saluted (Rāma's) feet, he then departed.
स तत् प्रकर्षन् हरिणां बलं महद्बभूव वीरः पवनात्मजः कपि ।
गताम्बुदे व्योम्नि विशुद्धमण्डलः शशीव नक्षत्रगणोपशोभितः ॥१५॥

15. sa tat prakarṣan hariṇāṃ balaṃ mahadbabhūva vīraḥ pavanātmajaḥ kapi ,
gatāmbude vyomni viśuddhamaṇḍalaḥ śaśīva nakṣatragaṇopaśobhitaḥ.

saḥ tat prakarṣan hariṇām balam
mahat babhūva vīraḥ pavanātmajaḥ kapiḥ

15.
As he gathered that great strength of the monkeys, the heroic monkey, the son of the wind, appeared like the moon with a clear disk, resplendent amidst a host of stars in a cloudless sky.
अतिबलबलमाश्रितस्तवाहं हरिवरविक्रमविक्रमैरनल्पैः ।
पवनसुत यथाभिगम्यते सा जनकसुता हनुमंस्तथा कुरुष्व ॥१६॥

16. atibalabalamāśritastavāhaṃ harivaravikramavikramairanalpaiḥ ,

16.
O son of the wind (pavana-suta), Hanuman, I rely upon your exceedingly great strength and the countless valiant deeds of you, the best of monkeys. Therefore, please act in such a way that the daughter of Janaka, Sita, may be found.
