पूर्णे वर्षसहस्रे तु व्रतस्नातं महामुनिम् ।
अभ्यागच्छन् सुराः सर्वे तपःफलचिकीर्षवः ॥१॥

1. Indeed, when a full thousand years were completed, all the gods approached the great sage, who had completed his vow, being desirous of the fruit of his austerities (tapas).
अब्रवीत् सुमहातेजा ब्रह्मा सुरुचिरं वचः ।
ऋषिस्त्वमसि भद्रं ते स्वार्जितैः कर्मभिः शुभैः ॥२॥
2. abravīt sumahātejā brahmā suruciraṃ vacaḥ ,
ṛṣistvamasi bhadraṃ te svārjitaiḥ karmabhiḥ śubhaiḥ.

2. Brahmā, the extremely glorious one, spoke very pleasing words: 'You are a sage; may good fortune be yours by your own well-earned, auspicious deeds (karma).'
तमेवमुक्त्वा देवेशस्त्रिदिवं पुनरभ्यगात् ।
विश्वामित्रो महातेजा भूयस्तेपे महत्तपः ॥३॥
3. tamevamuktvā deveśastridivaṃ punarabhyagāt ,
viśvāmitro mahātejā bhūyastepe mahattapaḥ.

3. Having spoken to him thus, the lord of the gods (Brahmā) returned to heaven. Viśvāmitra, full of great splendor, again performed great austerity (tapas).
ततः कालेन महता मेनका परमाप्सराः ।
पुष्करेषु नरश्रेष्ठ स्नातुं समुपचक्रमे ॥४॥
4. tataḥ kālena mahatā menakā paramāpsarāḥ ,

4. Then, O best of men, after a considerable period, Menaka, the foremost celestial nymph (apsarā), began to bathe in the Pushkara lakes.
तां ददर्श महातेजा मेनकां कुशिकात्मजः ।
रूपेणाप्रतिमां तत्र विद्युतं जलदे यथा ॥५॥
5. tāṃ dadarśa mahātejā menakāṃ kuśikātmajaḥ ,
rūpeṇāpratimāṃ tatra vidyutaṃ jalade yathā.

5. The greatly effulgent son of Kuśika (Viśvāmitra) saw Menaka there, unequalled in beauty, like lightning in a cloud.
दृष्ट्वा कन्दर्पवशगो मुनिस्तामिदमब्रवीत् ।
अप्सरः स्वागतं ते ऽस्तु वस चेह ममाश्रमे ।
अनुगृह्णीष्व भद्रं ते मदनेन सुमोहितम् ॥६॥
6. dṛṣṭvā kandarpavaśago munistāmidamabravīt ,
apsaraḥ svāgataṃ te'stu vasa ceha mamāśrame ,
anugṛhṇīṣva bhadraṃ te madanena sumohitam.

6. Having seen her, the sage, overcome by the god of love (Kandarpa), said this to her: "O celestial nymph (apsarā), welcome to you! Please stay here in my hermitage. Be gracious to me, who am greatly infatuated by the god of love (Madana)."
इत्युक्ता सा वरारोहा तत्रावासमथाकरोत् ।
तपसो हि महाविघ्नो विश्वामित्रमुपागतः ॥७॥
7. ityuktā sā varārohā tatrāvāsamathākarot ,
tapaso hi mahāvighno viśvāmitramupāgataḥ.

7. Thus addressed, that beautiful-hipped woman (Menaka) then took up residence there. Indeed, a great obstacle to his asceticism (tapas) came upon Viśvāmitra.
तस्यां वसन्त्यां वर्षाणि पञ्च पञ्च च राघव ।
विश्वामित्राश्रमे सौम्य सुखेन व्यतिचक्रमुः ॥८॥
8. tasyāṃ vasantyāṃ varṣāṇi pañca pañca ca rāghava ,
viśvāmitrāśrame saumya sukhena vyaticakramuḥ.

8. O Rāghava, O gentle one, while she was dwelling in Viśvāmitra's hermitage, ten years passed happily.
अथ काले गते तस्मिन् विश्वामित्रो महामुनिः ।
सव्रीड इव संवृत्तश्चिन्ताशोकपरायणः ॥९॥
9. atha kāle gate tasmin viśvāmitro mahāmuniḥ ,
savrīḍa iva saṃvṛttaścintāśokaparāyaṇaḥ.

9. Then, when that time had passed, the great sage Viśvāmitra appeared as if ashamed, having become absorbed in worry and sorrow.
बुद्धिर्मुनेः समुत्पन्ना सामर्षा रघुनन्दन ।
सर्वं सुराणां कर्मैतत्तपोऽपहरणं महत् ॥१०॥
10. buddhirmuneḥ samutpannā sāmarṣā raghunandana ,
sarvaṃ surāṇāṃ karmaitattapo'paharaṇaṃ mahat.

10. O Rāghunandana, an indignant thought arose in the sage's mind: 'All this is the action (karma) of the gods, a great obstruction of my asceticism (tapas).'
अहोरात्रापदेशेन गताः संवत्सरा दश ।
काममोहाभिभूतस्य विघ्नो ऽयं प्रत्युपस्थितः ॥११॥
11. ahorātrāpadeśena gatāḥ saṃvatsarā daśa ,
kāmamohābhibhūtasya vighno'yaṃ pratyupasthitaḥ.

11. Ten years have passed under the guise of days and nights. This obstacle has arisen for me, who am overcome by desire (kāma) and delusion.
विनिःश्वसन्मुनिवरः
पश्चात्तापेन दुःखितः ॥१२॥

12. The excellent sage, sighing deeply, was distressed by remorse.
भीतामप्सरसं दृष्ट्वा वेपन्तीं प्राञ्जलिं स्थिताम् ।
मेनकां मधुरैर्वाक्यैर्विसृज्य कुशिकात्मजः ।
उत्तरं पर्वतं राम विश्वामित्रो जगाम ह ॥१३॥
13. bhītāmapsarasaṃ dṛṣṭvā vepantīṃ prāñjaliṃ sthitām ,
menakāṃ madhurairvākyairvisṛjya kuśikātmajaḥ ,
uttaraṃ parvataṃ rāma viśvāmitro jagāma ha.
13. bhītām apsarasam dṛṣṭvā vepantīṃ
prāñjaliṃ sthitām menakām madhuraiḥ
vākyaiḥ visṛjya kuśikātmajaḥ uttaram

13. O Rāma, having seen the frightened Apsara Menakā, who stood trembling with folded hands, Viśvāmitra, the son of Kuśika, dismissed her with gentle words and then went to the northern mountain.
स कृत्वा नैष्ठिकीं बुद्धिं जेतुकामो महायशाः ।
कौशिकीतीरमासाद्य तपस्तेपे सुदारुणम् ॥१४॥
14. sa kṛtvā naiṣṭhikīṃ buddhiṃ jetukāmo mahāyaśāḥ ,
kauśikītīramāsādya tapastepe sudāruṇam.
14. sa kṛtvā naiṣṭhikīṃ buddhiṃ jetukāmaḥ mahāyaśāḥ
kauśikītīram āsādya tapaḥ tepe sudāruṇam
14. That highly renowned sage, having formed a firm resolve to conquer (his desires), reached the bank of the river Kauśikī and performed exceedingly severe penance (tapas).
तस्य वर्षसहस्रं तु घोरं तप उपासतः ।
उत्तरे पर्वते राम देवतानामभूद्भयम् ॥१५॥
15. tasya varṣasahasraṃ tu ghoraṃ tapa upāsataḥ ,
uttare parvate rāma devatānāmabhūdbhayam.
15. tasya varṣasahasram tu ghoram tapaḥ upāsataḥ
uttare parvate rāma devatānām abhūt bhayam
15. O Rāma, while he performed that terrible penance (tapas) for a thousand years on the northern mountain, fear arose among the gods.
अमन्त्रयन् समागम्य सर्वे सर्षिगणाः सुराः ।
महर्षिशब्दं लभतां साध्वयं कुशिकात्मजः ॥१६॥
16. amantrayan samāgamya sarve sarṣigaṇāḥ surāḥ ,
maharṣiśabdaṃ labhatāṃ sādhvayaṃ kuśikātmajaḥ.

16. All the gods, having assembled along with the groups of sages, deliberated: "Let this son of Kuśika indeed attain the title of great sage (maharṣi)."
देवतानां वचः श्रुत्वा सर्वलोकपितामहः ।
अब्रवीन्मधुरं वाक्यं विश्वामित्रं तपोधनम् ॥१७॥
17. devatānāṃ vacaḥ śrutvā sarvalokapitāmahaḥ ,
abravīnmadhuraṃ vākyaṃ viśvāmitraṃ tapodhanam.

17. Having heard the words of the deities, the grandfather of all worlds (Brahmā) spoke pleasing words to Viśvāmitra, who was rich in asceticism (tapas).
महर्षे स्वागतं वत्स तपसोग्रेण तोषितः ।
महत्त्वमृषिमुख्यत्वं ददामि तव कौशिक ॥१८॥
18. maharṣe svāgataṃ vatsa tapasogreṇa toṣitaḥ ,
mahattvamṛṣimukhyatvaṃ dadāmi tava kauśika.
18. maharṣe svāgatam vatsa tapasā ugreṇa toṣitaḥ
mahattvam ṛṣimukhyatvam dadāmi tava kauśika
18. maharṣe kauśika vatsa svāgatam ugreṇa tapasā

18. "O great sage (maharṣi)! Welcome, dear child! I am pleased by your severe asceticism (tapas). I bestow upon you greatness and the rank of chief among sages, O Kauśika."
ब्रह्मणः स वचः श्रुत्वा विश्वामित्रस्तपोधनः ।
प्राञ्जलिः प्रणतो भूत्वा प्रत्युवाच पितामहम् ॥१९॥
19. brahmaṇaḥ sa vacaḥ śrutvā viśvāmitrastapodhanaḥ ,
prāñjaliḥ praṇato bhūtvā pratyuvāca pitāmaham.

19. Having heard the words of Brahmā, Viśvāmitra, who was rich in asceticism (tapas), stood with folded hands (prāñjali) and, bowing down, replied to the grandfather (Brahmā).
ब्रह्मर्षि शब्दमतुलं स्वार्जितैः कर्मभिः शुभैः ।
यदि मे भगवानाह ततो ऽहं विजितेन्द्रियः ॥२०॥
20. brahmarṣi śabdamatulaṃ svārjitaiḥ karmabhiḥ śubhaiḥ ,
yadi me bhagavānāha tato'haṃ vijitendriyaḥ.
20. brahmarṣi śabdam atulam svārjitaiḥ karmabhiḥ śubhaiḥ
yadi me bhagavān āha tataḥ aham vijitendriyaḥ
20. If the revered one (Lord Brahma) acknowledges me by the incomparable title 'Brahmarshi' – earned through my own auspicious actions (karma) – then I shall consider myself one who has indeed conquered his senses.
तमुवाच ततो ब्रह्मा न तावत्त्वं जितेन्द्रियः ।
यतस्व मुनिशार्दूल इत्युक्त्वा त्रिदिवं गतः ॥२१॥
21. tamuvāca tato brahmā na tāvattvaṃ jitendriyaḥ ,
yatasva muniśārdūla ityuktvā tridivaṃ gataḥ.
21. tam uvāca tataḥ brahmā na tāvat tvam jitendriyaḥ
yatasva muniśārdūla iti uktvā tridivam gataḥ
21. Then Brahma said to him, 'You have not yet conquered your senses. O best of sages, strive further!' Having said this, he went to heaven.
विप्रस्थितेषु देवेषु विश्वामित्रो महामुनिः ।
ऊर्ध्वबाहुर्निरालम्बो वायुभक्षस्तपश्चरन् ॥२२॥
22. viprasthiteṣu deveṣu viśvāmitro mahāmuniḥ ,
ūrdhvabāhurnirālambo vāyubhakṣastapaścaran.

ūrdhvabāhuḥ nirālambaḥ vāyubhakṣaḥ tapas caran
22. When the gods had departed, the great sage Vishvamitra, with his arms raised, unsupported, and subsisting on air, continued performing his severe asceticism (tapas).
धर्मे पञ्चतपा भूत्वा वर्षास्वाकाशसंश्रयः ।
शिशिरे सलिलस्थायी रात्र्यहानि तपोधनः ॥२३॥
23. dharme pañcatapā bhūtvā varṣāsvākāśasaṃśrayaḥ ,
śiśire salilasthāyī rātryahāni tapodhanaḥ.
23. dharme pañcatapāḥ bhūtvā varṣāsu ākāśasaṃśrayaḥ
śiśire salilasthāyī rātryahāni tapodhanaḥ
23. During summer, he practiced the 'five-fire austerity' (pañcatapāḥ); in the rainy season, he sought shelter only from the sky; and in winter, he stood in water day and night, demonstrating that asceticism (tapas) was his true wealth.
एवं वर्षसहस्रं हि
तपो घोरमुपागमत् ॥२४॥

24. Indeed, for a thousand years, he undertook such severe asceticism (tapas).
तस्मिन् संतप्यमाने तु विश्वामित्रे महामुनौ ।
संभ्रमः सुमहानासीत् सुराणां वासवस्य च ॥२५॥
25. tasmin saṃtapyamāne tu viśvāmitre mahāmunau ,
saṃbhramaḥ sumahānāsīt surāṇāṃ vāsavasya ca.

sambhramaḥ sumahān āsīt surāṇām vāsavasya ca

25. While that great sage (mahāmuni) Viśvāmitra was engaged in such severe asceticism (tapas), a very great agitation arose among the gods and Vāsava (Indra).
रम्भामप्सरसं शक्रः सह सर्वैर्मरुद्गणैः ।
उवाचात्महितं वाक्यमहितं कौशिकस्य च ॥२६॥
26. rambhāmapsarasaṃ śakraḥ saha sarvairmarudgaṇaiḥ ,
uvācātmahitaṃ vākyamahitaṃ kauśikasya ca.
26. rambhām apsarasam śakraḥ saha sarvaiḥ marudgaṇaiḥ
uvāca ātmahitam vākyam ahitam kauśikasya ca

26. Śakra (Indra), accompanied by all the Marut groups, addressed the Apsara Rambhā with words that were beneficial to himself but detrimental to Kauśika (Viśvāmitra).
