सुनिविष्टं हितं वाक्यमुक्तवन्तं विभीषणम् ।
अब्रवीत् परुषं वाक्यं रावणः कालचोदितः ॥१॥

1. Ravana, impelled by destiny (kāla), spoke harsh words to Vibhishana, who had uttered well-reasoned and beneficial advice.
वसेत् सह सपत्नेन क्रुद्धेनाशीविषेण वा ।
न तु मित्रप्रवादेन संवसेच्छत्रुसेविना ॥२॥
2. vaset saha sapatnena kruddhenāśīviṣeṇa vā ,
na tu mitrapravādena saṃvasecchatrusevinā.
2. vaset saha sapatnena kruddhena āśīviṣeṇa vā
na tu mitra-pravādena saṃvaset śatru-sevinā
2. sapatnena vā kruddhena āśīviṣeṇa saha vaset.

2. One may dwell with a rival or even with an enraged venomous snake, but one should certainly not live with someone who, under the pretext of being a friend, serves one's enemy.
जानामि शीलं ज्ञातीनां सर्वलोकेषु राक्षस ।
हृष्यन्ति व्यसनेष्वेते ज्ञातीनां ज्ञातयः सदा ॥३॥
3. jānāmi śīlaṃ jñātīnāṃ sarvalokeṣu rākṣasa ,
hṛṣyanti vyasaneṣvete jñātīnāṃ jñātayaḥ sadā.
3. jānāmi śīlam jñātīnām sarva-lokeṣu rākṣasa
hṛṣyanti vyasaneṣu ete jñātīnām jñātayaḥ sadā
3. rākṣasa,
sarva-lokeṣu jñātīnām śīlam jānāmi.
ete jñātīnām jñātayaḥ sadā vyasaneṣu hṛṣyanti.
3. O demon (rākṣasa), I know the true nature of kinsmen in all worlds: these very relatives always rejoice in the misfortunes (vyasaneṣu) of their own kinsmen.
प्रधानं साधकं वैद्यं धर्मशीलं च राक्षस ।
ज्ञातयो ह्यवमन्यन्ते शूरं परिभवन्ति च ॥४॥
4. pradhānaṃ sādhakaṃ vaidyaṃ dharmaśīlaṃ ca rākṣasa ,
jñātayo hyavamanyante śūraṃ paribhavanti ca.
4. pradhānam sādhakam vaidyam dharmaśīlam ca rākṣasa
jñātayaḥ hi avamanyante śūram paribhavanti ca
4. rākṣasa jñātayaḥ hi pradhānam sādhakam vaidyam

4. O Rākṣasa, kinsmen indeed disrespect a prominent, capable, learned, and virtuous (dharmaśīla) person, and they humiliate a brave one.
नित्यमन्योन्यसंहृष्टा व्यसनेष्वाततायिनः ।
प्रच्छन्नहृदया घोरा ज्ञातयस्तु भयावहाः ॥५॥
5. nityamanyonyasaṃhṛṣṭā vyasaneṣvātatāyinaḥ ,
pracchannahṛdayā ghorā jñātayastu bhayāvahāḥ.
5. nityam anyonyasaṃhṛṣṭāḥ vyasaneṣu ātatāyinaḥ
pracchannahṛdayāḥ ghorāḥ jñātayaḥ tu bhayāvahāḥ
5. jñātayaḥ tu nityam anyonyasaṃhṛṣṭāḥ vyasaneṣu
ātatāyinaḥ pracchannahṛdayāḥ ghorāḥ bhayāvahāḥ
5. But kinsmen, though always appearing mutually delighted, become hostile in times of distress; they are terrible, secretive at heart, and indeed dangerous.
श्रूयन्ते हस्तिभिर्गीताः श्लोकाः पद्मवने क्व चित् ।
पाशहस्तान्नरान्दृष्ट्वा शृणु तान् गदतो मम ॥६॥
6. śrūyante hastibhirgītāḥ ślokāḥ padmavane kva cit ,
pāśahastānnarāndṛṣṭvā śṛṇu tān gadato mama.
6. śrūyante hastibhiḥ gītāḥ ślokāḥ padmavane kva
cit pāśahastān narān dṛṣṭvā śṛṇu tān gadataḥ mama
6. padmavane kva cit hastibhiḥ pāśahastān narān dṛṣṭvā gītāḥ ślokāḥ śrūyante.

6. Somewhere in a lotus forest, verses were heard, recited by elephants, after they had seen men holding nooses. Listen to those [verses] as I now tell you.
नाग्निर्नान्यानि शस्त्राणि न नः पाशा भयावहाः ।
घोराः स्वार्थप्रयुक्तास्तु ज्ञातयो नो भयावहाः ॥७॥
7. nāgnirnānyāni śastrāṇi na naḥ pāśā bhayāvahāḥ ,
ghorāḥ svārthaprayuktāstu jñātayo no bhayāvahāḥ.
7. na agniḥ na anyāni śastrāṇi na naḥ pāśāḥ bhayāvahāḥ
ghorāḥ svārthaprayuktāḥ tu jñātayaḥ naḥ bhayāvahāḥ
7. na agniḥ na anyāni śastrāṇi na pāśāḥ naḥ bhayāvahāḥ.
tu svārthaprayuktāḥ ghorāḥ jñātayaḥ naḥ bhayāvahāḥ
7. Neither fire, nor other weapons, nor nooses are frightening to us. But kinsmen, when motivated by self-interest, are truly dreadful and dangerous to us.
उपायमेते वक्ष्यन्ति ग्रहणे नात्र संशयः ।
कृत्स्नाद्भयाज्ज्ञातिभयं सुकष्टं विदितं च नः ॥८॥
8. upāyamete vakṣyanti grahaṇe nātra saṃśayaḥ ,
kṛtsnādbhayājjñātibhayaṃ sukaṣṭaṃ viditaṃ ca naḥ.
8. upāyam ete vakṣyanti grahaṇe na atra saṃśayaḥ
kṛtsnāt bhayāt jñātibhayam sukaṣṭam viditam ca naḥ
8. They will explain the method for their capture; there is no doubt about that. Moreover, the fear from relatives (jñāti), arising from a pervasive danger, is exceedingly painful and known to us.
विद्यते गोषु संपन्नं विद्यते ब्राह्मणे दमः ।
विद्यते स्त्रीषु चापल्यं विद्यते ज्ञातितो भयम् ॥९॥
9. vidyate goṣu saṃpannaṃ vidyate brāhmaṇe damaḥ ,
vidyate strīṣu cāpalyaṃ vidyate jñātito bhayam.
9. vidyate goṣu sampannam vidyate brāhmaṇe damaḥ
vidyate strīṣu cāpalyam vidyate jñātitaḥ bhayam
9. Prosperity is found in cows, self-control in a brahmin, fickleness in women, and fear from relatives (jñāti) exists.
ततो नेष्टमिदं सौम्य यदहं लोकसत्कृतः ।
ऐश्वर्यमभिजातश्च रिपूणां मूर्ध्नि च स्थितः ॥१०॥
10. tato neṣṭamidaṃ saumya yadahaṃ lokasatkṛtaḥ ,
aiśvaryamabhijātaśca ripūṇāṃ mūrdhni ca sthitaḥ.
10. tataḥ na iṣṭam idam saumya yat aham lokasatkṛtaḥ
aiśvaryam abhijātaḥ ca ripūṇām mūrdhni ca sthitaḥ
10. Therefore, O gentle one, this is not desirable: that I, who am honored by the people, born to (great) sovereignty (aiśvarya), and standing at the forefront of my enemies, (should be in this state).
अन्यस्त्वेवंविधं ब्रूयाद्वाक्यमेतन्निशाचर ।
अस्मिन्मुहूर्ते न भवेत्त्वां तु धिक्कुलपांसनम् ॥११॥
11. anyastvevaṃvidhaṃ brūyādvākyametanniśācara ,
asminmuhūrte na bhavettvāṃ tu dhikkulapāṃsanam.
11. anyaḥ tu evam-vidham brūyāt vākyam etat niśācara
asmin muhūrte na bhavet tvām tu dhik kulapāṃsanam
11. Another person might utter such words, O night-wanderer. But at this moment, such a thing should not occur. Shame on you, disgracer of the family!
इत्युक्तः परुषं वाक्यं न्यायवादी विभीषणः ।
उत्पपात गदापाणिश्चतुर्भिः सह राक्षसैः ॥१२॥
12. ityuktaḥ paruṣaṃ vākyaṃ nyāyavādī vibhīṣaṇaḥ ,
utpapāta gadāpāṇiścaturbhiḥ saha rākṣasaiḥ.
12. iti uktaḥ paruṣam vākyam nyāyavādī vibhīṣaṇaḥ
utpapāta gadāpāṇiḥ caturbhiḥ saha rākṣasaiḥ
12. vibhīṣaṇaḥ nyāyavādī iti paruṣam vākyam uktaḥ
gadāpāṇiḥ caturbhiḥ rākṣasaiḥ saha utpapāta
12. Having been thus addressed with harsh words, Vibhishana, the advocate of justice, flew up, mace in hand, along with four rakshasas.
अब्रवीच्च तदा वाक्यं जातक्रोधो विभीषणः ।
अन्तरिक्षगतः श्रीमान्भ्रातरं राक्षसाधिपम् ॥१३॥
13. abravīcca tadā vākyaṃ jātakrodho vibhīṣaṇaḥ ,
antarikṣagataḥ śrīmānbhrātaraṃ rākṣasādhipam.
13. abravīt ca tadā vākyam jātakrodhaḥ vibhīṣaṇaḥ
antarikṣagataḥ śrīmān bhrātaram rākṣasādhipam
13. ca tadā śrīmān vibhīṣaṇaḥ jātakrodhaḥ antarikṣagataḥ
rākṣasādhipam bhrātaram vākyam abravīt
13. And then, the glorious Vibhishana, filled with anger and suspended in the sky, spoke these words to his brother, the lord of the rakshasas.
स त्वं भ्रातासि मे राजन्ब्रूहि मां यद् यदिच्छसि ।
इदं तु परुषं वाक्यं न क्षमाम्यनृतं तव ॥१४॥
14. sa tvaṃ bhrātāsi me rājanbrūhi māṃ yad yadicchasi ,
idaṃ tu paruṣaṃ vākyaṃ na kṣamāmyanṛtaṃ tava.
14. sa tvam bhrātā asi me rājan brūhi mām yat yat
icchasi idam tu paruṣam vākyam na kṣamāmi anṛtam tava
14. rājan sa tvam me bhrātā asi yat yat icchasi mām
brūhi tu idam paruṣam anṛtam vākyam tava na kṣamāmi
14. You are indeed my brother, O king; tell me whatever you desire. But I will not tolerate this harsh and false statement of yours.
सुनीतं हितकामेन वाक्यमुक्तं दशानन ।
न गृह्णन्त्यकृतात्मानः कालस्य वशमागताः ॥१५॥
15. sunītaṃ hitakāmena vākyamuktaṃ daśānana ,
na gṛhṇantyakṛtātmānaḥ kālasya vaśamāgatāḥ.
15. sunītam hitakāmena vākyam uktam daśānana na
gṛhṇanti akṛtātmānaḥ kālasya vaśam āgatāḥ
15. daśānana hitakāmena sunītam uktam vākyam
akṛtātmānaḥ kālasya vaśam āgatāḥ na gṛhṇanti
15. O Daśānana, good counsel, spoken by one who desires your welfare, is not accepted by those whose inner being (ātman) is unrefined and who have fallen under the dominion of time.
सुलभाः पुरुषा राजन् सततं प्रियवादिनः ।
अप्रियस्य तु पथ्यस्य वक्ता श्रोता च दुर्लभः ॥१६॥
16. sulabhāḥ puruṣā rājan satataṃ priyavādinaḥ ,
apriyasya tu pathyasya vaktā śrotā ca durlabhaḥ.

apriyasya tu pathyasya vaktā śrotā ca durlabhaḥ
16. rājan priyavādinaḥ puruṣāḥ satataṃ sulabhāḥ tu

16. O King, people who always speak pleasant words are easy to find. However, one who speaks, or even one who listens to, disagreeable but wholesome advice is rare.
बद्धं कालस्य पाशेन सर्वभूतापहारिणा ।
न नश्यन्तमुपेक्षेयं प्रदीप्तं शरणं यथा ॥१७॥
17. baddhaṃ kālasya pāśena sarvabhūtāpahāriṇā ,
na naśyantamupekṣeyaṃ pradīptaṃ śaraṇaṃ yathā.
17. baddham kālasya pāśena sarvabhūtāpahāriṇā na
naśyantam upekṣeyam pradīptam śaraṇam yathā
17. sarvabhūtāpahāriṇā kālasya pāśena baddham
naśyantam pradīptam śaraṇam yathā na upekṣeyam
17. Bound by the noose of time (kāla), which carries away all beings, I would not abandon someone who is perishing, even as one would abandon a burning shelter.
दीप्तपावकसंकाशैः शितैः काञ्चनभूषणैः ।
न त्वामिच्छाम्यहं द्रष्टुं रामेण निहतं शरैः ॥१८॥
18. dīptapāvakasaṃkāśaiḥ śitaiḥ kāñcanabhūṣaṇaiḥ ,
na tvāmicchāmyahaṃ draṣṭuṃ rāmeṇa nihataṃ śaraiḥ.
18. dīptapāvakasankāśaiḥ śitaiḥ kāñcanabhūṣaṇaiḥ na
tvām icchāmi aham draṣṭum rāmeṇa nihatam śaraiḥ
18. aham tvām rāmeṇa śaraiḥ dīptapāvakasankāśaiḥ
śitaiḥ kāñcanabhūṣaṇaiḥ nihatam draṣṭum na icchāmi
18. I do not wish to see you slain by Rama with arrows that are sharp, adorned with gold, and resemble blazing fire.
शूराश्च बलवन्तश्च कृतास्त्राश्च रणाजिरे ।
कालाभिपन्ना सीदन्ति यथा वालुकसेतवः ॥१९॥
19. śūrāśca balavantaśca kṛtāstrāśca raṇājire ,
kālābhipannā sīdanti yathā vālukasetavaḥ.
19. śūrāḥ ca balavantaḥ ca kṛtāstrāḥ ca raṇājire
kālābhipannāḥ sīdanti yathā vālukasetavaḥ
19. raṇājire śūrāḥ ca balavantaḥ ca kṛtāstrāḥ ca

19. Even heroes, the strong, and those skilled in weaponry on the battlefield, when seized by time (kāla), collapse just like sand embankments.
आत्मानं सर्वथा रक्ष पुरीं चेमां सराक्षसाम् ।
स्वस्ति ते ऽस्तु गमिष्यामि सुखी भव मया विना ॥२०॥
20. ātmānaṃ sarvathā rakṣa purīṃ cemāṃ sarākṣasām ,
svasti te'stu gamiṣyāmi sukhī bhava mayā vinā.
20. ātmānam sarvathā rakṣa purīm ca imām sarākṣasām
svasti te astu gamiṣyāmi sukhī bhava mayā vinā
20. tvam ātmānam sarvathā rakṣa imām purīm ca sarākṣasām
te svasti astu mayā vinā sukhī bhava gamiṣyāmi
20. Protect your being (ātman) completely, and this city along with its rākṣasas. May good fortune be with you. I will go; be happy without me.
निवार्यमाणस्य मया हितैषिणा न रोचते ते वचनं निशाचर ।
परीतकाला हि गतायुषो नरा हितं न गृह्णन्ति सुहृद्भिरीरितम् ॥२१॥
21. nivāryamāṇasya mayā hitaiṣiṇā na rocate te vacanaṃ niśācara ,
parītakālā hi gatāyuṣo narā hitaṃ na gṛhṇanti suhṛdbhirīritam.

21. O night-wanderer (niśācara), the advice spoken by me, your well-wisher, does not please you, though I am trying to prevent you. Indeed, people whose time is exhausted and whose lifespan is ended do not accept beneficial advice spoken by friends.
