श्रुत्वागस्त्येरितं वाक्यं रामो विस्मयमागतः ।

Upon hearing the words spoken by Agastya, Rama was struck with wonder: "Was this indeed the origin of the rakshasas in Lanka previously?"
ततः शिरः कम्पयित्वा त्रेताग्निसमविग्रहम् ।
अगस्त्यं तं मुहुर्दृष्ट्वा स्मयमानो ऽभ्यभाषत ॥२॥

Then, shaking his head, and repeatedly gazing at Agastya, whose form resembled the three sacred (treta) fires, he spoke with a smile.
भगवन्पूर्वमप्येषा लङ्कासीत् पिशिताशिनाम् ।
इतीदं भवतः श्रुत्वा विस्मयो जनितो मम ॥३॥

"Venerable sir, was this Lanka even in ancient times (an abode) of flesh-eating rakshasas?" Having heard this from you, great astonishment has arisen in me.
पुलस्त्यवंशादुद्भूता राक्षसा इति नः श्रुतम् ।
इदानीमन्यतश्चापि संभवः कीर्तितस्त्वया ॥४॥

It has been heard by us that the Rākṣasas originated from the lineage of Pulastya. Now, however, an origin from another source has also been described by you.
रावणात् कुम्भकर्णाच्च प्रहस्ताद्विकटादपि ।
रावणस्य च पुत्रेभ्यः किं नु ते बलवत्तराः ॥५॥

5.
Are these (new Rākṣasas) truly more powerful than Rāvaṇa, Kumbhakarṇa, Prahasta, Vikaṭa, and even Rāvaṇa's sons?
क एषां पूर्वको ब्रह्मन् किंनामा किंतपोबलः ।
अपराधं च कं प्राप्य विष्णुना द्राविताः पुरा ॥६॥

O Brahmā, who among them was their progenitor, what was his name, and what was the strength of his austerity (tapas)? And having committed what offense, were they formerly driven away by Viṣṇu?
एतद्विस्तरतः सर्वं कथयस्व ममानघ ।
कौतूहलं कृतं मह्यं नुद भानुर्यथा तमः ॥७॥

7. etadvistarataḥ sarvaṃ kathayasva mamānagha ,
kautūhalaṃ kṛtaṃ mahyaṃ nuda bhānuryathā tamaḥ.

7.
O sinless one, tell me all of this in detail. My curiosity has been aroused; dispel it, just as the sun dispels darkness.
राघवस्य तु तच्छ्रुत्वा संस्कारालंकृतं वचः ।
ईषद्विस्मयमानस्तमगस्त्यः प्राह राघवम् ॥८॥

8. rāghavasya tu tacchrutvā saṃskārālaṃkṛtaṃ vacaḥ ,

Having heard that refined speech of Rāghava, Agastya, slightly amazed, then spoke to Rāghava.
प्रजापतिः पुरा सृष्ट्वा अपः सलिलसंभवः ।
तासां गोपायने सत्त्वानसृजत् पद्मसंभवः ॥९॥
तासां गोपायने सत्त्वानसृजत् पद्मसंभवः ॥९॥
9. prajāpatiḥ purā sṛṣṭvā apaḥ salilasaṃbhavaḥ ,

Formerly, the creator (prajāpati), who is known as the one born from the waters and also from a lotus, having created the waters, then brought forth beings (sattva) for their protection.
ते सत्त्वाः सत्त्वकर्तारं विनीतवदुपस्थिताः ।
किं कुर्म इति भाषन्तः क्षुत्पिपासाभयार्दिताः ॥१०॥

10. te sattvāḥ sattvakartāraṃ vinītavadupasthitāḥ ,
kiṃ kurma iti bhāṣantaḥ kṣutpipāsābhayārditāḥ.

te sattvāḥ sattvakartāram vinītavat upasthitāḥ

Those beings (sattva), afflicted by hunger, thirst, and fear, humbly approached their creator (prajāpati), asking, "What shall we do?"
प्रजापतिस्तु तान्याह सत्त्वानि प्रहसन्निव ।
आभाष्य वाचा यत्नेन रक्षध्वमिति मानदः ॥११॥

11. prajāpatistu tānyāha sattvāni prahasanniva ,
ābhāṣya vācā yatnena rakṣadhvamiti mānadaḥ.

But Prajāpati, the bestower of honor, as if smiling, addressed those beings (sattva) and said, "Diligently protect (the waters)!"
रक्षाम इति तत्रान्यैर्यक्षामेति तथापरैः ।
भुङ्क्षिताभुङ्क्षितैरुक्तस्ततस्तानाह भूतकृत् ॥१२॥

12. rakṣāma iti tatrānyairyakṣāmeti tathāparaiḥ ,
bhuṅkṣitābhuṅkṣitairuktastatastānāha bhūtakṛt.

rakṣāmaḥ iti tatra anyaiḥ yakṣāmaḥ iti tathā aparaiḥ
| bhuṅkṣita-abhuṅkṣitaiḥ uktaḥ tataḥ tān āha bhūtakṛt

12.
Some among them said, "Let us protect!" and others said, "Let us worship!" Addressed by those who had eaten and those who had not eaten, the creator of beings (Brahma) then spoke to them.
रक्षाम इति यैरुक्तं राक्षसास्ते भवन्तु वः ।
यक्षाम इति यैरुक्तं ते वै यक्षा भवन्तु वः ॥१३॥
यक्षाम इति यैरुक्तं ते वै यक्षा भवन्तु वः ॥१३॥
13. rakṣāma iti yairuktaṃ rākṣasāste bhavantu vaḥ ,
yakṣāma iti yairuktaṃ te vai yakṣā bhavantu vaḥ.

13.
To those who said, "Let us protect," he declared, "They shall be your (rākṣasas)." And to those who said, "Let us worship," he declared, "They indeed shall be your (yakṣas)."
तत्र हेतिः प्रहेतिश्च भ्रातरौ राक्षसर्षभौ ।
मधुकैटभसंकाशौ बभूवतुररिंदमौ ॥१४॥

14. tatra hetiḥ prahetiśca bhrātarau rākṣasarṣabhau ,
madhukaiṭabhasaṃkāśau babhūvaturariṃdamau.

Among them were two brothers, Heti and Praheti, who were chief (rākṣasas) and subduers of enemies, resembling Madhu and Kaiṭabha.
प्रहेतिर्धार्मिकस्तत्र न दारान् सो ऽभिकाङ्क्षति ।
हेतिर्दारक्रियार्थं तु यत्नं परमथाकरोत् ॥१५॥

15. prahetirdhārmikastatra na dārān so'bhikāṅkṣati ,
hetirdārakriyārthaṃ tu yatnaṃ paramathākarot.

Praheti, being righteous, did not desire wives. However, Heti then made great effort for the purpose of marriage.
स कालभगिनीं कन्यां भयां नाम भयावहाम् ।
उदावहदमेयात्मा स्वयमेव महामतिः ॥१६॥

16. sa kālabhaginīṃ kanyāṃ bhayāṃ nāma bhayāvahām ,
udāvahadameyātmā svayameva mahāmatiḥ.

He, the great-minded one of immeasurable nature (ātman), personally married the terrifying maiden named Bhayā, who was the sister of Time.
स तस्यां जनयामास हेती राक्षसपुंगवः ।
पुत्रं पुत्रवतां श्रेष्ठो विद्युत्केश इति श्रुतम् ॥१७॥

17. sa tasyāṃ janayāmāsa hetī rākṣasapuṃgavaḥ ,
putraṃ putravatāṃ śreṣṭho vidyutkeśa iti śrutam.

Heti, the chief among rākṣasas and the best among fathers, begot in her a son named Vidyutkeśa, who became famous.
विद्युत्केशो हेतिपुत्रः प्रदीप्ताग्निसमप्रभः ।
व्यवर्धत महातेजास्तोयमध्य इवाम्बुजम् ॥१८॥

18. vidyutkeśo hetiputraḥ pradīptāgnisamaprabhaḥ ,
vyavardhata mahātejāstoyamadhya ivāmbujam.

Vidyutkeśa, the son of Heti, greatly radiant and with a splendor like a blazing fire, grew like a lotus in water.
स यदा यौवनं भद्रमनुप्राप्तो निशाचरः ।

19. sa yadā yauvanaṃ bhadramanuprāpto niśācaraḥ ,
tato dārakriyāṃ tasya kartuṃ vyavasitaḥ pitā.

sa yadā yauvanam bhadram anuprāptaḥ niśācaraḥ

When he, the rākṣasa, attained auspicious youth, his father then resolved to arrange his marriage.
संध्यादुहितरं सो ऽथ संध्यातुल्यां प्रभावतः ।
वरयामास पुत्रार्थं हेती राक्षसपुंगवः ॥२०॥

20. saṃdhyāduhitaraṃ so'tha saṃdhyātulyāṃ prabhāvataḥ ,
varayāmāsa putrārthaṃ hetī rākṣasapuṃgavaḥ.

sandhyāduhitaram saḥ atha sandhyātulyām prabhāvataḥ

Then Heti, the chief of the rākṣasas (demons), desired to marry Sandhyā's daughter, who was equal to Sandhyā in splendor, for the sake of a son.
अवश्यमेव दातव्या परस्मै सेति संध्यया ।
चिन्तयित्वा सुता दत्ता विद्युत्केशाय राघव ॥२१॥

21. avaśyameva dātavyā parasmai seti saṃdhyayā ,
cintayitvā sutā dattā vidyutkeśāya rāghava.

O Rāghava, Sandhyā, having reflected that "She must certainly be given to another," then gave her daughter to Vidyutkeśa.
संध्यायास्तनयां लब्ध्वा विद्युत्केशो निशाचरः ।
रमते स तया सार्धं पौलोम्या मघवानिव ॥२२॥

22. saṃdhyāyāstanayāṃ labdhvā vidyutkeśo niśācaraḥ ,

Having obtained Sandhyā's daughter, Vidyutkeśa, the night-wanderer (rākṣasa), revels with her, just as Indra (Maghavan) does with Paulomī.

But then, after some time, O Rāma, Sālakaṭaṅkaṭā conceived a child from Vidyutkeśa, just as a mass of clouds takes shape from the ocean.

Then, having gone to Mount Mandara, that demoness gave birth to a child whose radiance was like that of a thundercloud, just as the Ganga delivered the fiery offspring (of Agni).

But she, desiring sexual union (rata) with Vidyutkeśa, abandoned that child and enjoyed herself with her husband, completely forgetting her own son (ātmajam).

But that child, abandoned by her, radiant like the autumn sun, put his hand in his mouth and cried aloud like the thunderous king of clouds.

Then, indeed, Lord Hara (Shiva), riding on his bull and moving through the sky, saw the demoness's son (rākṣasātmajam) crying, accompanied by Uma.
कारुण्यभावात् पार्वत्या भवस्त्रिपुरहा ततः ।
तं राक्षसात्मजं चक्रे मातुरेव वयः समम् ॥२८॥

Due to Pārvatī's compassion, Śiva (bhava), the destroyer of Tripura, then made that son of a rākṣasa to be of the same age as his mother.
अमरं चैव तं कृत्वा महादेवो ऽक्षयो ऽव्ययः ।
पुरमाकाशगं प्रादात् पार्वत्याः प्रियकाम्यया ॥२९॥

And having made him immortal, the great god (mahādeva), who is imperishable and immutable, gave him an aerial city out of a desire to please Pārvatī.

30.
O son of the king, a boon was also given by Umā (Pārvatī) to the rākṣasīs: immediate conception and immediate delivery, and immediate attainment of an age equal to that of the mother.
ततः सुकेशो वरदानगर्वितः श्रियं प्रभोः प्राप्य हरस्य पार्श्वतः ।
चचार सर्वत्र महामतिः खगः खगं पुरं प्राप्य पुरंदरो यथा ॥३१॥

Then Sukeśa, proud due to the boon, having obtained the glory of Lord Hara (Śiva) from his proximity, and being great-minded, roamed everywhere after acquiring the aerial city, just as Indra (purandara) roams.
