बहूनि नाम वर्षाणि गतस्य सुमहद्वनम् ।
शृणोम्यहं प्रीतिकरं मम नाथस्य कीर्तनम् ॥१॥

1. Indeed, many years have passed since my lord departed for the great forest. Now I hear a pleasing mention of my lord.

2. Indeed, this popular saying seems very auspicious to me: 'Joy comes to a living person, even after a hundred years.'
राघवस्य हरीणां च कथमासीत् समागमः ।
कस्मिन्देशे किमाश्रित्य तत्त्वमाख्याहि पृच्छतः ॥३॥
3. rāghavasya harīṇāṃ ca kathamāsīt samāgamaḥ ,

3. How did the meeting between Rāma (rāghava) and the monkeys occur? In what place, and by relying on what circumstances? Please explain the truth to me, who is asking.
स पृष्टो राजपुत्रेण बृस्यां समुपवेशितः ।
आचचक्षे ततः सर्वं रामस्य चरितं वने ॥४॥
4. sa pṛṣṭo rājaputreṇa bṛsyāṃ samupaveśitaḥ ,
ācacakṣe tataḥ sarvaṃ rāmasya caritaṃ vane.

4. Being questioned by the prince (Sugrīva), he was seated on a mat. Then he recounted the entire story (carita) of Rāma's deeds in the forest.
यथा प्रव्रजितो रामो मातुर्दत्ते वरे तव ।
यथा च पुत्रशोकेन राजा दशरथो मृतः ॥५॥
5. yathā pravrajito rāmo māturdatte vare tava ,
yathā ca putraśokena rājā daśaratho mṛtaḥ.

5. How Rāma went into exile on account of the boon granted by your mother, and how King Daśaratha died from the grief for his son.
यथा दूतैस्त्वमानीतस्तूर्णं राजगृहात् प्रभो ।
त्वयायोध्यां प्रविष्टेन यथा राज्यं न चेप्सितम् ॥६॥
6. yathā dūtaistvamānītastūrṇaṃ rājagṛhāt prabho ,
tvayāyodhyāṃ praviṣṭena yathā rājyaṃ na cepsitam.

6. O lord, you were swiftly brought by messengers from the royal palace; yet, upon entering Ayodhya, you did not desire the kingdom.
चित्रकूटं गिरिं गत्वा राज्येनामित्रकर्शनः ।
निमन्त्रितस्त्वया भ्राता धर्ममाचरिता सताम् ॥७॥
7. citrakūṭaṃ giriṃ gatvā rājyenāmitrakarśanaḥ ,
nimantritastvayā bhrātā dharmamācaritā satām.

nimantritaḥ tvayā bhrātā dharmam ācaritā satām

7. Having gone to the Chitrakuta mountain, you, the vanquisher of foes, invited your brother (Bharata) concerning the kingdom, (you who are) one who practiced the natural law (dharma) of the virtuous.
स्थितेन राज्ञो वचने यथा राज्यं विसर्जितम् ।
आर्यस्य पादुके गृह्य यथासि पुनरागतः ॥८॥
8. sthitena rājño vacane yathā rājyaṃ visarjitam ,
āryasya pāduke gṛhya yathāsi punarāgataḥ.

8. Just as you, remaining firm in the king's command, relinquished the kingdom, and just as you returned again after taking the sandals of the respected one (Rama).
सर्वमेतन्महाबाहो यथावद्विदितं तव ।
त्वयि प्रतिप्रयाते तु यद्वृत्तं तन्निबोध मे ॥९॥
9. sarvametanmahābāho yathāvadviditaṃ tava ,
tvayi pratiprayāte tu yadvṛttaṃ tannibodha me.
9. sarvam etat mahābāho yathāvat viditam tava
tvayi pratiprayāte tu yat vṛttam tat nibodha me
9. mahābāho,

9. O mighty-armed one, all this is known to you precisely. However, what transpired after your return, that you must learn from me.
अपयाते त्वयि तदा समुद्भ्रान्तमृगद्विजम् ।
प्रविवेशाथ विजनं सुमहद्दण्डकावनम् ॥१०॥
10. apayāte tvayi tadā samudbhrāntamṛgadvijam ,
praviveśātha vijanaṃ sumahaddaṇḍakāvanam.

10. Then, after your departure, he entered the very vast, desolate Dandaka forest, where deer and birds were greatly bewildered.
तेषां पुरस्ताद्बलवान् गच्छतां गहने वने ।
विनदन् सुमहानादं विराधः प्रत्यदृश्यत ॥११॥
11. teṣāṃ purastādbalavān gacchatāṃ gahane vane ,
vinadan sumahānādaṃ virādhaḥ pratyadṛśyata.

11. As they were proceeding through the dense forest, the powerful Virādha appeared before them, emitting a very great roar.
तमुत्क्षिप्य महानादमूर्ध्वबाहुमधोमुखम् ।
निखाते प्रक्षिपन्ति स्म नदन्तमिव कुञ्जरम् ॥१२॥
12. tamutkṣipya mahānādamūrdhvabāhumadhomukham ,
nikhāte prakṣipanti sma nadantamiva kuñjaram.

12. Having lifted him up, with his arms raised and face downwards, they threw him into a pit as if he were a roaring elephant.
तत् कृत्वा दुष्करं कर्म भ्रातरौ रामलक्ष्मणौ ।
सायाह्ने शरभङ्गस्य रम्यमाश्रममीयतुः ॥१३॥
13. tat kṛtvā duṣkaraṃ karma bhrātarau rāmalakṣmaṇau ,
sāyāhne śarabhaṅgasya ramyamāśramamīyatuḥ.

13. Having performed that difficult deed (karma), the two brothers, Rāma and Lakṣmaṇa, reached the beautiful hermitage (āśrama) of Śarabhaṅga in the evening.
शरभङ्गे दिवं प्राप्ते रामः सत्यपराक्रमः ।
अभिवाद्य मुनीन् सर्वाञ्जनस्थानमुपागमत् ॥१४॥
14. śarabhaṅge divaṃ prāpte rāmaḥ satyaparākramaḥ ,
abhivādya munīn sarvāñjanasthānamupāgamat.

14. When Śarabhaṅga had attained heaven, Rāma, whose valor was true, respectfully greeted all the sages (muni) and then proceeded to Janasthāna.
चतुर्दशसहस्राणि रक्षसां भीमकर्मणाम् ।
हतानि वसता तत्र राघवेण महात्मना ॥१५॥
15. caturdaśasahasrāṇi rakṣasāṃ bhīmakarmaṇām ,
hatāni vasatā tatra rāghaveṇa mahātmanā.

15. Fourteen thousand rākṣasas of fierce deeds were slain there by Rāma, the great-souled (mahātman) scion of Raghu, while he resided there.
ततः पश्चाच्छूर्पणखा रामपार्श्वमुपागता ।
ततो रामेण संदिष्टो लक्ष्मणः सहसोत्थितः ॥१६॥
16. tataḥ paścācchūrpaṇakhā rāmapārśvamupāgatā ,
tato rāmeṇa saṃdiṣṭo lakṣmaṇaḥ sahasotthitaḥ.

16. Then, Śūrpaṇakhā approached Rāma's side. Thereupon, as commanded by Rāma, Lakṣmaṇa suddenly rose.
प्रगृह्य खड्गं चिच्छेद कर्णनासे महाबलः ।
ततस्तेनार्दिता बाला रावणं समुपागता ॥१७॥
17. pragṛhya khaḍgaṃ ciccheda karṇanāse mahābalaḥ ,
tatastenārditā bālā rāvaṇaṃ samupāgatā.

17. Seizing his sword, the greatly powerful one cut off her ears and nose. Then, tormented by him, the girl approached Rāvaṇa.
रावणानुचरो घोरो मारीचो नाम राक्षसः ।
लोभयामास वैदेहीं भूत्वा रत्नमयो मृगः ॥१८॥
18. rāvaṇānucaro ghoro mārīco nāma rākṣasaḥ ,
lobhayāmāsa vaidehīṃ bhūtvā ratnamayo mṛgaḥ.
18. rāvaṇānucaraḥ ghoraḥ mārīcaḥ nāma rākṣasaḥ
lobhayāmāsa vaidehīṃ bhūtvā ratnamayaḥ mṛgaḥ
18. A terrible demon (rākṣasa) named Marīca, a follower of Rāvaṇa, enticed Vaidehī (Sītā) by transforming into a deer made of jewels.
सा राममब्रवीद्दृष्ट्वा वैदेही गृह्यतामिति ।
अहो मनोहरः कान्त आश्रमे नो भविष्यति ॥१९॥
19. sā rāmamabravīddṛṣṭvā vaidehī gṛhyatāmiti ,
aho manoharaḥ kānta āśrame no bhaviṣyati.
19. sā rāmam abravīt dṛṣṭvā vaidehī gṛhyatām iti
aho manoharaḥ kānta āśrame naḥ bhaviṣyati
19. Having seen it, Vaidehī (Sītā) said to Rāma, "Please take it! Oh, how charming and beautiful it will be for us in the hermitage!"
ततो रामो धनुष्पाणिर्धावन्तमनुधावति ।
स तं जघान धावन्तं शरेणानतपर्वणा ॥२०॥
20. tato rāmo dhanuṣpāṇirdhāvantamanudhāvati ,
sa taṃ jaghāna dhāvantaṃ śareṇānataparvaṇā.
20. tataḥ rāmaḥ dhanuṣpāṇiḥ dhāvantam anudhavati
saḥ tam jaghāna dhāvantam śareṇa ānataparvaṇā
20. Then Rāma, with bow in hand, pursued the running deer. He struck that running deer with an arrow having well-formed joints.
अथ सौम्या दशग्रीवो मृगं याते तु राघवे ।
लक्ष्मणे चापि निष्क्रान्ते प्रविवेशाश्रमं तदा ।
जग्राह तरसा सीतां ग्रहः खे रोहिणीमिव ॥२१॥
21. atha saumyā daśagrīvo mṛgaṃ yāte tu rāghave ,
lakṣmaṇe cāpi niṣkrānte praviveśāśramaṃ tadā ,
jagrāha tarasā sītāṃ grahaḥ khe rohiṇīmiva.
21. atha saumyā daśagrīvaḥ mṛgam yāte
tu rāghave lakṣmaṇe ca api niṣkrānte
praviveśa āśramam tadā jagrāha
tarasā sītām grahaḥ khe rohiṇīm iva
21. Then, O gentle one (saumya), when Rāghava (Rāma) had gone after the deer, and Lakṣmaṇa too had departed, Daśagrīva (Rāvaṇa) then entered the hermitage. He forcefully seized Sītā, just as a planet (graha) seizes the star Rohiṇī in the sky.
त्रातुकामं ततो युद्धे हत्वा गृध्रं जटायुषम् ।
प्रगृह्य सीतां सहसा जगामाशु स रावणः ॥२२॥
22. trātukāmaṃ tato yuddhe hatvā gṛdhraṃ jaṭāyuṣam ,
pragṛhya sītāṃ sahasā jagāmāśu sa rāvaṇaḥ.
22. trātukāmam tataḥ yuddhe hatvā gṛdhram jaṭāyuṣam
pragṛhya sītām sahasā jagāma āśu saḥ rāvaṇaḥ
22. Then, having killed the vulture Jaṭāyu, who desired to protect (Sītā) in battle, that Rāvaṇa forcibly seized Sītā and swiftly departed.
ततस्त्वद्भुतसंकाशाः स्थिताः पर्वतमूर्धनि ।
सीतां गृहीत्वा गच्छन्तं वानराः पर्वतोपमाः ।
ददृशुर्विस्मितास्तत्र रावणं राक्षसाधिपम् ॥२३॥
23. tatastvadbhutasaṃkāśāḥ sthitāḥ parvatamūrdhani ,
sītāṃ gṛhītvā gacchantaṃ vānarāḥ parvatopamāḥ ,
dadṛśurvismitāstatra rāvaṇaṃ rākṣasādhipam.
23. tataḥ tu adbhutasaṃkāśāḥ sthitāḥ
parvatamūrdhani sītām gṛhītvā gacchantam
vānarāḥ parvatopamāḥ dadṛśuḥ
vismitāḥ tatra rāvaṇam rākṣasādhipam
23. Then, the mountain-like monkeys, wondrous in appearance and standing on a mountain peak, were astonished to see Rāvaṇa, the lord of rākṣasas, carrying Sītā and departing from there.
प्रविवेर्श तदा लङ्कां
रावणो लोकरावणः ॥२४॥

24. Then, Rāvaṇa, who made the world wail, entered Laṅkā.
तां सुवर्णपरिक्रान्ते शुभे महति वेश्मनि ।
प्रवेश्य मैथिलीं वाक्यैः सान्त्वयामास रावणः ॥२५॥
25. tāṃ suvarṇaparikrānte śubhe mahati veśmani ,
praveśya maithilīṃ vākyaiḥ sāntvayāmāsa rāvaṇaḥ.

25. Having led Maithilī (Sītā) into that great, beautiful mansion, adorned with gold, Rāvaṇa then consoled her with words.
निवर्तमानः काकुत्स्थो
दृष्ट्वा गृध्रं प्रविव्यथे ॥२६॥
26. nivartamānaḥ kākutstho
dṛṣṭvā gṛdhraṃ pravivyathe.

26. As Kakutstha's descendant, Rāma, was returning, he became greatly distressed upon seeing the vulture.
गृध्रं हतं तदा दग्ध्वा रामः प्रियसखं पितुः ।
गोदावरीमनुचरन् वनोद्देशांश्च पुष्पितान् ।
आसेदतुर्महारण्ये कबन्धं नाम राक्षसं ॥२७॥
27. gṛdhraṃ hataṃ tadā dagdhvā rāmaḥ priyasakhaṃ pituḥ ,
godāvarīmanucaran vanoddeśāṃśca puṣpitān ,
āsedaturmahāraṇye kabandhaṃ nāma rākṣasaṃ.
27. gṛdhram hatam tadā dagdhvā rāmaḥ
priyasakham pituḥ godāvarīm anucaran
vana uddeśān ca puṣpitān āsedatum
mahā araṇye kabandham nāma rākṣasam
27. Then, Rāma, having cremated the slain vulture (Jaṭāyu), his father's dear friend, and while wandering along the Godavari river and through the flowering forest regions, he (Rāma and Lakṣmaṇa) encountered a demon named Kabandha in the great forest.
ततः कबन्धवचनाद् रामः सत्यपराक्रमः ।
ऋश्यमूकं गिरिं गत्वा सुग्रीवेण समागतः ॥२८॥
28. tataḥ kabandhavacanād rāmaḥ satyaparākramaḥ ,
ṛśyamūkaṃ giriṃ gatvā sugrīveṇa samāgataḥ.
28. tataḥ kabandha vacanāt rāmaḥ satya parākramaḥ
ṛśyamūkam girim gatvā sugrīveṇa samāgataḥ
28. Thereafter, following Kabandha's words, Rāma, who possessed true valor, went to R̥śyamūka mountain and met with Sugrīva.
तयोः समागमः पूर्वं प्रीत्या हार्दो व्यजायत ।
इतरेतर संवादात् प्रगाढः प्रणयस्तयोः ॥२९॥
29. tayoḥ samāgamaḥ pūrvaṃ prītyā hārdo vyajāyata ,
itaretara saṃvādāt pragāḍhaḥ praṇayastayoḥ.
29. tayoḥ samāgamaḥ pūrvam prītyā hārdaḥ vi ajāyata
itaretara saṃvādāt pragāḍhaḥ praṇayaḥ tayoḥ
29. Initially, a heartfelt affection (hārda) arose between them (Rāma and Sugrīva) from their meeting. Subsequently, through mutual conversation, their friendship (praṇaya) became profound.
रामः स्वबाहुवीर्येण स्वराज्यं प्रत्यपादयत् ।
वालिनं समरे हत्वा महाकायं महाबलम् ॥३०॥
30. rāmaḥ svabāhuvīryeṇa svarājyaṃ pratyapādayat ,
vālinaṃ samare hatvā mahākāyaṃ mahābalam.

30. By the valor of his own arms, Rāma restored the kingdom, having killed the mighty-bodied, greatly powerful Vāli in battle.
सुग्रीवः स्थापितो राज्ये सहितः सर्ववानरैः ।
रामाय प्रतिजानीते राजपुत्र्यास्तु मार्गणम् ॥३१॥
31. sugrīvaḥ sthāpito rājye sahitaḥ sarvavānaraiḥ ,
rāmāya pratijānīte rājaputryāstu mārgaṇam.
31. sugrīvaḥ sthāpitaḥ rājye sahitaḥ sarva vānaraiḥ
rāmāya pratijānīte rājaputryāḥ tu mārgaṇam

31. Sugrīva was established in the kingdom, accompanied by all the monkeys. He then promised Rāma to search for the princess (Sītā).
आदिष्टा वानरेन्द्रेण सुग्रीवेण महात्मना ।
दशकोट्यः प्लवंगानां सर्वाः प्रस्थापिता दिशः ॥३२॥
32. ādiṣṭā vānarendreṇa sugrīveṇa mahātmanā ,
daśakoṭyaḥ plavaṃgānāṃ sarvāḥ prasthāpitā diśaḥ.

32. Commanded by the noble lord of monkeys (vānarā), Sugrīva, ten crores (one hundred million) of monkeys were dispatched to all directions.
तेषां नो विप्रनष्टानां विन्ध्ये पर्वतसत्तमे ।
भृशं शोकाभितप्तानां महान् कालो ऽत्यवर्तत ॥३३॥
33. teṣāṃ no vipranaṣṭānāṃ vindhye parvatasattame ,
bhṛśaṃ śokābhitaptānāṃ mahān kālo'tyavartata.
33. teṣām naḥ vipranaṣṭānām vindhye parvata sattame
bhṛśam śokābhitaptānām mahān kālaḥ atyavartata

33. For us (monkeys) who were utterly lost in the excellent Vindhya mountain (range) and greatly afflicted by sorrow, a long time passed.
भ्राता तु गृध्रराजस्य संपातिर्नाम वीर्यवान् ।
समाख्याति स्म वसतिं सीताया रावणालये ॥३४॥
34. bhrātā tu gṛdhrarājasya saṃpātirnāma vīryavān ,
samākhyāti sma vasatiṃ sītāyā rāvaṇālaye.

34. A powerful brother of the king of vultures, named Sampati, informed us of Sita's dwelling place in Ravana's abode.
सो ऽहं दुःखपरीतानां दुःखं तज्ज्ञातिनां नुदन् ।
आत्मवीर्यं समास्थाय योजनानां शतं प्लुतः ॥३५॥
35. so'haṃ duḥkhaparītānāṃ duḥkhaṃ tajjñātināṃ nudan ,
ātmavīryaṃ samāsthāya yojanānāṃ śataṃ plutaḥ.
35. saḥ aham duḥkhaparītānām duḥkham tat-jñātinām
nudan ātmavīryam samāsthāya yojanānām śatam plutaḥ

35. Therefore, I, removing the sorrow (duḥkha) of those afflicted by grief (duḥkha) and of their kinsmen, relying on my own strength (ātman), leapt a hundred yojanas.
तत्राहमेकामद्राक्षमशोकवनिकां गताम् ।
कौशेयवस्त्रां मलिनां निरानन्दां दृढव्रताम् ॥३६॥

36. There I saw her (Sita) in an Ashoka grove, wearing silk garments but soiled, joyless, and firm in her vow.
तया समेत्य विधिवत् पृष्ट्वा सर्वमनिन्दिताम् ।
अभिज्ञानं मणिं लब्ध्वा चरितार्थो ऽहमागतः ॥३७॥
37. tayā sametya vidhivat pṛṣṭvā sarvamaninditām ,
abhijñānaṃ maṇiṃ labdhvā caritārtho'hamāgataḥ.

37. Having met with her, the blameless one, and duly asked her everything, and having obtained the jewel as a token of recognition, I have returned with my purpose fulfilled.

अभिज्ञानं मया दत्तमर्चिष्मान् स महामणिः ॥३८॥
38. mayā ca punarāgamya rāmasyākliṣṭakarmaṇaḥ ,
abhijñānaṃ mayā dattamarciṣmān sa mahāmaṇiḥ.

38. After my return, I gave that luminous great gem as a token to Rāma, whose actions are unhindered.
श्रुत्वा तां मैथिलीं हृष्टस्त्वाशशंसे स जीवितम् ।
जीवितान्तमनुप्राप्तः पीत्वामृतमिवातुरः ॥३९॥
39. śrutvā tāṃ maithilīṃ hṛṣṭastvāśaśaṃse sa jīvitam ,
jīvitāntamanuprāptaḥ pītvāmṛtamivāturaḥ.

39. Upon hearing about Sītā, he, although afflicted and on the verge of death, rejoiced and hoped for life, just like a sick person who has drunk nectar.
उद्योजयिष्यन्नुद्योगं दध्रे लङ्कावधे मनः ।
जिघांसुरिव लोकांस्ते सर्वांल् लोकान् विभावसुः ॥४०॥
40. udyojayiṣyannudyogaṃ dadhre laṅkāvadhe manaḥ ,
jighāṃsuriva lokāṃste sarvāṃl lokān vibhāvasuḥ.

40. Intending to make an effort, he resolved to destroy Laṅkā, just as fire (Vibhāvasu) desires to consume all those worlds.
ततः समुद्रमासाद्य नलं सेतुमकारयत् ।
अतरत् कपिवीराणां वाहिनी तेन सेतुना ॥४१॥

41. After that, upon reaching the ocean, he made Nala construct a bridge. The army of monkey heroes then crossed by means of that bridge.
प्रहस्तमवधीन्नीलः कुम्भकर्णं तु राघवः ।
लक्ष्मणो रावणसुतं स्वयं रामस्तु रावणम् ॥४२॥
42. prahastamavadhīnnīlaḥ kumbhakarṇaṃ tu rāghavaḥ ,
lakṣmaṇo rāvaṇasutaṃ svayaṃ rāmastu rāvaṇam.

42. Nīla killed Prahasta, but Rāma (Rāghava) killed Kumbhakarṇa. Lakṣmaṇa killed Rāvaṇa's son (Indrajit), and Rāma himself killed Rāvaṇa.
स शक्रेण समागम्य यमेन वरुणेन च ।
सुरर्षिभिश्च काकुत्स्थो वरांल् लेभे परंतपः ॥४३॥
43. sa śakreṇa samāgamya yamena varuṇena ca ,
surarṣibhiśca kākutstho varāṃl lebhe paraṃtapaḥ.

43. Having met with Indra (Śakra), Yama, Varuṇa, and the divine sages, Rāma (Kakutstha), that tormentor of foes, obtained boons.
स तु दत्तवरः प्रीत्या वानरैश्च समागतः ।
पुष्पकेण विमानेन किष्किन्धामभ्युपागमत् ॥४४॥
44. sa tu dattavaraḥ prītyā vānaraiśca samāgataḥ ,
puṣpakeṇa vimānena kiṣkindhāmabhyupāgamat.

44. And he, having received boons and joyfully reunited with the Vānaras, approached Kiṣkindhā by means of the Puṣpaka aircraft.
तं गङ्गां पुनरासाद्य वसन्तं मुनिसंनिधौ ।
अविघ्नं पुष्ययोगेन श्वो रामं द्रष्टुमर्हसि ॥४५॥
45. taṃ gaṅgāṃ punarāsādya vasantaṃ munisaṃnidhau ,
avighnaṃ puṣyayogena śvo rāmaṃ draṣṭumarhasi.

45. Having again reached him (Rāma) at the Gaṅgā, where he resides in the vicinity of sages, you should be able to see Rāma tomorrow, without hindrance, under the auspicious Puṣya constellation.
ततः स सत्यं हनुमद्वचो महन्निशम्य हृष्टो भरतः कृताञ्जलिः ।
उवाच वाणीं मनसः प्रहर्षिणी चिरस्य पूर्णः खलु मे मनोरथः ॥४६॥
46. tataḥ sa satyaṃ hanumadvaco mahanniśamya hṛṣṭo bharataḥ kṛtāñjaliḥ ,
uvāca vāṇīṃ manasaḥ praharṣiṇī cirasya pūrṇaḥ khalu me manorathaḥ.

46. Then Bharata, delighted after hearing Hanumat's great and truthful words, spoke with folded hands, his speech gladdening the mind: 'Indeed, my cherished desire is fulfilled after a long time.'
