अर्जुनेन विमुक्तस्तु रावणो राक्षसाधिपः ।
चचार पृथिवीं सर्वामनिर्विण्णस्तथा कृतः ॥१॥
1. arjunena vimuktastu rāvaṇo rākṣasādhipaḥ ,
cacāra pṛthivīṃ sarvāmanirviṇṇastathā kṛtaḥ.

1. Released by Arjuna, Ravana, the lord of the Rākṣasas, roamed the entire earth, undiscouraged by that experience.
राक्षसं वा मनुष्यं वा शृणुते यं बलाधिकम् ।
रावणस्तं समासाद्य युद्धे ह्वयति दर्पितः ॥२॥
2. rākṣasaṃ vā manuṣyaṃ vā śṛṇute yaṃ balādhikam ,
rāvaṇastaṃ samāsādya yuddhe hvayati darpitaḥ.
2. rākṣasam vā manuṣyam vā śṛṇute yam balādhikam
rāvaṇaḥ tam samāsādya yuddhe hvayati darpitaḥ
2. Whomsoever he hears to be mightier, whether a Rākṣasa or a human, Ravana, arrogant, approaches him and challenges him to battle.
ततः कदा चित् किष्किन्धां नगरीं वालिपालिताम् ।
गत्वाह्वयति युद्धाय वालिनं हेममालिनम् ॥३॥
3. tataḥ kadā cit kiṣkindhāṃ nagarīṃ vālipālitām ,
gatvāhvayati yuddhāya vālinaṃ hemamālinam.

3. Then, at one time, having gone to the city of Kiṣkindha, which was ruled by Vali, he challenged Vali, who wore a golden garland, to battle.
ततस्तं वानरामात्यस्तारस्तारापिता प्रभुः ।
उवाच रावणं वाक्यं युद्धप्रेप्सुमुपागतम् ॥४॥
4. tatastaṃ vānarāmātyastārastārāpitā prabhuḥ ,
uvāca rāvaṇaṃ vākyaṃ yuddhaprepsumupāgatam.
4. tataḥ tam vānarāmātyaḥ tāraḥ tārāpitā prabhuḥ
uvāca rāvaṇaṃ vākyaṃ yuddhaprepsum upāgatam
4. Then Tāra, the powerful minister of the Vānaras and father of Tārā, spoke these words to Ravana, who had approached, desirous of battle.
राक्षसेन्द्र गतो वाली यस्ते प्रतिबलो भवेत् ।
नान्यः प्रमुखतः स्थातुं तव शक्तः प्लवंगमः ॥५॥
5. rākṣasendra gato vālī yaste pratibalo bhavet ,
nānyaḥ pramukhataḥ sthātuṃ tava śaktaḥ plavaṃgamaḥ.

5. O king of rākṣasas, Vāli, who would be your worthy adversary, has departed. No other monkey is capable of standing before you face to face.
चतुर्भ्यो ऽपि समुद्रेभ्यः संध्यामन्वास्य रावण ।
इमं मुहूर्तमायाति वाली तिष्ठ मुहूर्तकम् ॥६॥
6. caturbhyo'pi samudrebhyaḥ saṃdhyāmanvāsya rāvaṇa ,
imaṃ muhūrtamāyāti vālī tiṣṭha muhūrtakam.
6. caturbhyaḥ api samudrebhyaḥ sandhyām anvāsya
rāvaṇa imam muhūrtam āyāti vālī tiṣṭha muhūrtakam
6. rāvaṇa vālī caturbhyaḥ api samudrebhyaḥ sandhyām
anvāsya imam muhūrtam āyāti tiṣṭha muhūrtakam
6. O Rāvaṇa, Vāli, having performed his evening ritual (sandhyā) at even the four oceans, is now arriving. Wait for a moment!
एतानस्थिचयान्पश्य य एते शङ्खपाण्डुराः ।
युद्धार्थिनामिमे राजन् वानराधिपतेजसा ॥७॥
7. etānasthicayānpaśya ya ete śaṅkhapāṇḍurāḥ ,
yuddhārthināmime rājan vānarādhipatejasā.
7. etān asthicayān paśya ye ete śaṅkhapāṇḍurāḥ
yuddhārthinām ime rājan vānarādhipatejasā
7. rājan paśya etān asthicayān ye ete śaṅkhapāṇḍurāḥ

7. O king, behold these piles of bones, which are white as conch-shells. These are the remains of those who sought battle, due to the prowess (tejas) of the king of monkeys.
यद्वामृतरसः पीतस्त्वया रावणराक्षस ।
तथा वालिनमासाद्य तदन्तं तव जीवितम् ॥८॥
8. yadvāmṛtarasaḥ pītastvayā rāvaṇarākṣasa ,
tathā vālinamāsādya tadantaṃ tava jīvitam.
8. yat vā amṛtarasaḥ pītaḥ tvayā rāvaṇarākṣasa
tathā vālinam āsādya tat antam tava jīvitam
8. rāvaṇarākṣasa yat vā amṛtarasaḥ tvayā pītaḥ
tathā vālinam āsādya tava jīvitam tat antam
8. O Rāvaṇa, the rākṣasa, even if you have drunk the elixir of immortality (amṛtarasa), your life will come to an end when you encounter Vāli.
अथ वा त्वरसे मर्तुं गच्छ दक्षिणसागरम् ।
वालिनं द्रक्ष्यसे तत्र भूमिष्ठमिव भास्करम् ॥९॥
9. atha vā tvarase martuṃ gaccha dakṣiṇasāgaram ,
vālinaṃ drakṣyase tatra bhūmiṣṭhamiva bhāskaram.
9. atha vā tvarase martum gaccha dakṣiṇasāgaram
vālinam drakṣyase tatra bhūmiṣṭham iva bhāskaram
9. atha vā martum tvarase dakṣiṇasāgaram gaccha
tatra vālinam bhūmiṣṭham iva bhāskaram drakṣyase
9. Or if you hasten to die, go to the southern ocean. There you will see Vālin, who is like the sun standing on the earth.
स तु तारं विनिर्भर्त्स्य रावणो राक्षसेश्वरः ।
पुष्पकं तत् समारुह्य प्रययौ दक्षिणार्णवम् ॥१०॥
10. sa tu tāraṃ vinirbhartsya rāvaṇo rākṣaseśvaraḥ ,
puṣpakaṃ tat samāruhya prayayau dakṣiṇārṇavam.
10. saḥ tu tāram vinirbhartsya rāvaṇaḥ rākṣaseśvaraḥ
puṣpakam tat samāruhya prayayau dakṣiṇārṇavam
10. saḥ rākṣaseśvaraḥ rāvaṇaḥ tu tāram vinirbhartsya
tat puṣpakam samāruhya dakṣiṇārṇavam prayayau
10. But that Rāvaṇa, the lord of the rakṣasas, having severely rebuked Tārā, ascended that Puṣpaka chariot and proceeded to the southern ocean.
तत्र हेमगिरिप्रख्यं तरुणार्कनिभाननम् ।
रावणो वालिनं दृष्ट्वा संध्योपासनतत्परम् ॥११॥
11. tatra hemagiriprakhyaṃ taruṇārkanibhānanam ,
rāvaṇo vālinaṃ dṛṣṭvā saṃdhyopāsanatatparam.
11. tatra hemagiriprakhyam taruṇārkanibhānanam
rāvaṇaḥ vālinam dṛṣṭvā sandhyopāsanatatparam
11. tatra rāvaṇaḥ hemagiriprakhyam taruṇārkanibhānanam

11. There, Rāvaṇa saw Vālin, who resembled a golden mountain, had a face shining like the rising sun, and was deeply engaged in his twilight prayers.
पुष्पकादवरुह्याथ रावणो ऽञ्जनसंनिभः ।
ग्रहीतुं वालिनं तूर्णं निःशब्दपदमाद्रवत् ॥१२॥
12. puṣpakādavaruhyātha rāvaṇo'ñjanasaṃnibhaḥ ,
grahītuṃ vālinaṃ tūrṇaṃ niḥśabdapadamādravat.
12. puṣpakāt avaruhya atha rāvaṇaḥ añjanasaṃnibhaḥ
grahītum vālinam tūrṇam niḥśabdapadam ādravat
12. atha añjanasaṃnibhaḥ rāvaṇaḥ puṣpakāt avaruhya

12. Then Rāvaṇa, dark as collyrium, having descended from the Puṣpaka (chariot), quickly rushed with silent steps to seize Vālin.
यदृच्छयोन्मीलयता वालिनापि स रावणः ।
पापाभिप्रायवान्दृष्टश्चकार न च संभ्रमम् ॥१३॥
13. yadṛcchayonmīlayatā vālināpi sa rāvaṇaḥ ,
pāpābhiprāyavāndṛṣṭaścakāra na ca saṃbhramam.
13. yadṛcchayā unmīlayatā vālinā api saḥ rāvaṇaḥ
pāpābhiprāyavān dṛṣṭaḥ cakāra na ca saṃbhramam
13. vālinā yadṛcchayā unmīlayatā api saḥ pāpābhiprāyavān
rāvaṇaḥ dṛṣṭaḥ na ca saṃbhramam cakāra
13. Even when Vālin, who had accidentally woken up, saw that Rāvaṇa, full of evil intent, he (Rāvaṇa) did not cause Vālin any agitation.
शशमालक्ष्य सिंहो वा पन्नगं गरुडो यथा ।
न चिन्तयति तं वाली रावणं पापनिश्चयम् ॥१४॥
14. śaśamālakṣya siṃho vā pannagaṃ garuḍo yathā ,
na cintayati taṃ vālī rāvaṇaṃ pāpaniścayam.
14. śaśam ālakṣya siṃhaḥ vā pannagam garuḍaḥ yathā
na cintayati tam vālī rāvaṇam pāpaniścayam
14. vālī tam pāpaniścayam rāvaṇam na cintayati
yathā siṃhaḥ śaśam ālakṣya vā garuḍaḥ pannagam
14. Vālin does not concern himself with that Rāvaṇa, who is intent on evil, just as a lion does not concern itself with a hare it has spotted, or Garuḍa with a snake.
जिघृक्षमाणमद्यैनं रावणं पापबुद्धिनम् ।
कक्षावलम्बिनं कृत्वा गमिष्यामि महार्णवान् ॥१५॥
15. jighṛkṣamāṇamadyainaṃ rāvaṇaṃ pāpabuddhinam ,
kakṣāvalambinaṃ kṛtvā gamiṣyāmi mahārṇavān.
15. jighṛkṣamāṇam adya enam rāvaṇam pāpabuddhinam
kakṣāvalambinam kṛtvā gamiṣyāmi mahārṇavān
15. adya enam jighṛkṣamāṇam pāpabuddhinam rāvaṇam
kakṣāvalambinam kṛtvā mahārṇavān gamiṣyāmi
15. Today, I will seize this evil-minded Rāvaṇa, and carrying him suspended from my armpit, I will journey to the great oceans.
द्रक्ष्यन्त्यरिं ममाङ्कस्थं स्रंसितोरुकराम्बरम् ।
लम्बमानं दशग्रीवं गरुडस्येव पन्नगम् ॥१६॥
16. drakṣyantyariṃ mamāṅkasthaṃ sraṃsitorukarāmbaram ,
lambamānaṃ daśagrīvaṃ garuḍasyeva pannagam.
16. drakṣyanti arim mama aṅkastham sraṃsitorukarāmbaram
lambamānam daśagrīvam garuḍasya iva pannagam
16. mama arim aṅkastham sraṃsitorukarāmbaram lambamānam
daśagrīvam garuḍasya pannagam iva drakṣyanti
16. They will see my enemy, Daśagrīva, suspended at my side, with his mighty arms and garments disheveled, just like a snake carried by Garuḍa.
इत्येवं मतिमास्थाय वाली कर्णमुपाश्रितः ।
जपन् वै नैगमान्मन्त्रांस्तस्थौ पर्वतराडिव ॥१७॥
17. ityevaṃ matimāsthāya vālī karṇamupāśritaḥ ,
japan vai naigamānmantrāṃstasthau parvatarāḍiva.
17. iti evam matim āsthāya vālī karṇam upāśritaḥ
japan vai naigamān mantrān tasthau parvatarāṭ iva
17. vālī iti evam matim āsthāya karṇam upāśritaḥ vai

17. Thus, having adopted this firm resolve, Vāli, holding [Rāvaṇa] to his side and indeed chanting Vedic (naigama) mantras, stood firm like a king of mountains.
तावन्योन्यं जिघृक्षन्तौ हरिराक्षसपार्थिवौ ।
प्रयत्नवन्तौ तत् कर्म ईहतुर्बलदर्पितौ ॥१८॥
18. tāvanyonyaṃ jighṛkṣantau harirākṣasapārthivau ,
prayatnavantau tat karma īhaturbaladarpitau.
18. tau anyonyam jighṛkṣantau harirākṣasapārthivau
prayatnavantau tat karma īhatuḥ baladarpitau
18. harirākṣasapārthivau tau anyonyam jighṛkṣantau
prayatnavantau baladarpitau tat karma īhatuḥ
18. Those two, the monkey (hari) and the demon king (rākṣasapārthiva), each desiring to seize the other, mighty and full of effort, strove for that action (karma).
हस्तग्राह्यं तु तं मत्वा पादशब्देन रावणम् ।
पराङ्मुखो ऽपि जग्राह वाली सर्पमिवाण्डजः ॥१९॥
19. hastagrāhyaṃ tu taṃ matvā pādaśabdena rāvaṇam ,
parāṅmukho'pi jagrāha vālī sarpamivāṇḍajaḥ.
19. hastagrāhyam tu tam matvā pādaśabdena rāvaṇam
parāṅmukhaḥ api jagrāha vālī sarpam iva aṇḍajaḥ
19. vālī aṇḍajaḥ sarpam iva rāvaṇam pādaśabdena
tam hastagrāhyam matvā parāṅmukhaḥ api jagrāha
19. But Vāli, perceiving Rāvaṇa by the sound of his footsteps and considering him within arm's reach, seized him even while facing away, just as a bird snatches a snake.
ग्रहीतुकामं तं गृह्य रक्षसामीश्वरं हरिः ।
खमुत्पपात वेगेन कृत्वा कक्षावलम्बिनम् ॥२०॥
20. grahītukāmaṃ taṃ gṛhya rakṣasāmīśvaraṃ hariḥ ,
khamutpapāta vegena kṛtvā kakṣāvalambinam.
20. grahītukāmam tam gṛhya rakṣasām īśvaram hariḥ
kham utpapāta vegena kṛtvā kakṣāvalambinam
20. hariḥ grahītukāmam tam rakṣasām īśvaram gṛhya
kakṣāvalambinam kṛtvā vegena kham utpapāta
20. The monkey (hari), Vāli, having seized Rāvaṇa, the lord of demons (rakṣasām īśvara), who was himself intending to seize him, swiftly sprang up into the sky, making him hang from his side.
स तं पीड्दयमानस्तु वितुदन्तं नखैर्मुहुः ।
जहार रावणं वाली पवनस्तोयदं यथा ॥२१॥
21. sa taṃ pīḍdayamānastu vitudantaṃ nakhairmuhuḥ ,
jahāra rāvaṇaṃ vālī pavanastoyadaṃ yathā.
21. sa tam pīḍdayamānaḥ tu vitudantam nakhaiḥ
muhuḥ jahāra rāvaṇam vālī pavanaḥ toyadam yathā
21. vālī sa pīḍdayamānaḥ tu tam rāvaṇam vitudantam
nakhaiḥ muhuḥ jahāra yathā pavanaḥ toyadam
21. Vālī, though being tormented, seized and carried off that Rāvaṇa, who was repeatedly scratching with his nails, just as the wind carries a cloud.
अथ ते राक्षसामात्या ह्रियमाणे दशानने ।
मुमोक्षयिषवो घोरा रवमाणा ह्यभिद्रवन् ॥२२॥
22. atha te rākṣasāmātyā hriyamāṇe daśānane ,
mumokṣayiṣavo ghorā ravamāṇā hyabhidravan.
22. atha te rākṣasāmātyāḥ hriyamāṇe daśānane
mumokṣayiṣavaḥ ghorāḥ ravamāṇāḥ hi abhidravan
22. atha te ghorāḥ rākṣasāmātyāḥ hriyamāṇe daśānane

22. Then, as the ten-faced (Rāvaṇa) was being carried off, those fierce Rakshasa ministers, roaring, rushed forward, eager to release him.
अन्वीयमानस्तैर्वाली भ्राजते ऽम्बरमध्यगः ।
अन्वीयमानो मेघौघैरम्बरस्थ इवांशुमान् ॥२३॥
23. anvīyamānastairvālī bhrājate'mbaramadhyagaḥ ,
anvīyamāno meghaughairambarastha ivāṃśumān.
23. anvīyamānaḥ taiḥ vālī bhrājate ambaramadhyagaḥ
anvīyamānaḥ meghaugaiḥ ambarasthaḥ iva aṃśumān
23. taiḥ anvīyamānaḥ vālī ambaramadhyagaḥ bhrājate
iva ambarasthaḥ aṃśumān meghaugaiḥ anvīyamānaḥ
23. Vālī, being followed by them (the ministers), shone in the middle of the sky, just like the sun, situated in the sky, is followed by masses of clouds.
ते ऽशक्नुवन्तः संप्राप्तं वालिनं राक्षसोत्तमाः ।
तस्य बाहूरुवेगेन परिश्रान्तः पतन्ति च ॥२४॥
24. te'śaknuvantaḥ saṃprāptaṃ vālinaṃ rākṣasottamāḥ ,
tasya bāhūruvegena pariśrāntaḥ patanti ca.
24. te aśaknuvantaḥ samprāptam vālinaṃ rākṣasottamāḥ
tasya bāhūruvegena pariśrāntaḥ patanti ca
24. te rākṣasottamāḥ vālinaṃ samprāptam aśaknuvantaḥ
tasya bāhūruvegena pariśrāntaḥ ca patanti
24. Those chief Rakshasa ministers, being unable to reach (or catch up with) Vālī, fell down, exhausted by the great speed of his arms and thighs.
वालिमार्गादपाक्रामन्पर्वतेन्द्रा
हि गच्छतः ॥२५॥
25. vālimārgādapākrāmanparvatendrā
hi gacchataḥ.

parvatendrāḥ hi gacchataḥ
25. Indeed, as (Vāli) was moving away and going, the chief mountains were seen receding from Vāli's path.
अपक्षिगणसंपातो वानरेन्द्रो महाजवः ।
क्रमशः सागरान् सर्वान् संध्याकालमवन्दत ॥२६॥
26. apakṣigaṇasaṃpāto vānarendro mahājavaḥ ,
kramaśaḥ sāgarān sarvān saṃdhyākālamavandata.
26. apakṣigaṇasaṃpātaḥ vānarendraḥ mahājavaḥ
kramaśaḥ sāgarān sarvān sandhyākālam avandata
26. The king of monkeys (vāranendra), of great speed, where bird flocks do not gather, saluted all the oceans one after another at twilight.
सभाज्यमानो भूतैस्तु खेचरैः खेचरो हरिः ।
पश्चिमं सागरं वाली आजगाम सरावणः ॥२७॥
27. sabhājyamāno bhūtaistu khecaraiḥ khecaro hariḥ ,
paścimaṃ sāgaraṃ vālī ājagāma sarāvaṇaḥ.
27. sabhājyamānaḥ bhūtaiḥ tu khecaraiḥ khecaraḥ
hariḥ paścimam sāgaram vālī ājagāma sarāvaṇaḥ
27. The sky-going Vāli (hari), being honored by beings and by sky-dwellers, went to the western ocean, accompanied by Rāvaṇa.
तत्र संध्यामुपासित्वा स्नात्वा जप्त्वा च वानरः ।
उत्तरं सागरं प्रायाद्वहमानो दशाननम् ॥२८॥
28. tatra saṃdhyāmupāsitvā snātvā japtvā ca vānaraḥ ,
uttaraṃ sāgaraṃ prāyādvahamāno daśānanam.
28. tatra sandhyām upāsitvā snātvā japtvā ca vānaraḥ
uttaram sāgaram prāyāt vahamānaḥ daśānanam
28. There, having performed the evening rites (sandhyā), bathed, and recited prayers, the monkey (vānarah) went to the northern ocean, carrying Daśānana (daśānanam).
उत्तरे सागरे संध्यामुपासित्वा दशाननम् ।
वहमानो ऽगमद्वाली पूर्वमम्बुमहानिधिम् ॥२९॥
29. uttare sāgare saṃdhyāmupāsitvā daśānanam ,
vahamāno'gamadvālī pūrvamambumahānidhim.
29. uttare sāgare sandhyām upāsitvā daśānanam
vahamānaḥ agamat vālī pūrvam ambu-mahā-nidhim
29. vālī uttare sāgare sandhyām upāsitvā daśānanam
vahamānaḥ pūrvam ambu-mahā-nidhim agamat
29. After performing his twilight (sandhyā) worship in the northern ocean, Vāli, still carrying Daśānana (Rāvaṇa), went to the eastern great ocean.
तत्रापि संध्यामन्वास्य वासविः स हरीश्वरः ।
किष्किन्धाभिमुखो गृह्य रावणं पुनरागमत् ॥३०॥
30. tatrāpi saṃdhyāmanvāsya vāsaviḥ sa harīśvaraḥ ,
kiṣkindhābhimukho gṛhya rāvaṇaṃ punarāgamat.
30. tatra api sandhyām anvāsya vāsaviḥ saḥ hari-īśvaraḥ
kiṣkindhā-abhimukhaḥ gṛhya rāvaṇam punaḥ āgamat
30. saḥ vāsaviḥ hari-īśvaraḥ tatra api sandhyām anvāsya
rāvaṇam gṛhya kiṣkindhā-abhimukhaḥ punaḥ āgamat
30. There also, having performed his twilight (sandhyā) worship, that son of Vasava (Vāli), the lord of monkeys, returned again to Kiṣkindhā, still holding Rāvaṇa.
चतुर्ष्वपि समुद्रेषु संध्यामन्वास्य वानरः ।
रावणोद्वहनश्रान्तः किष्किन्धोपवने ऽपतत् ॥३१॥
31. caturṣvapi samudreṣu saṃdhyāmanvāsya vānaraḥ ,
rāvaṇodvahanaśrāntaḥ kiṣkindhopavane'patat.
31. caturṣu api samudreṣu sandhyām anvāsya vānaraḥ
rāvaṇa-udvahana-śrāntaḥ kiṣkindhā-upavane apatat
31. vānaraḥ caturṣu api samudreṣu sandhyām anvāsya
rāvaṇa-udvahana-śrāntaḥ kiṣkindhā-upavane apatat
31. Having performed his twilight (sandhyā) worship in all four oceans, the monkey (Vāli), weary from carrying Rāvaṇa, then landed in a grove near Kiṣkindhā.
रावणं तु मुमोचाथ स्वकक्षात् कपिसत्तमः ।
कुतस्त्वमिति चोवाच प्रहसन् रावणं प्रति ॥३२॥
32. rāvaṇaṃ tu mumocātha svakakṣāt kapisattamaḥ ,
kutastvamiti covāca prahasan rāvaṇaṃ prati.
32. rāvaṇam tu mumoca atha sva-kakṣāt kapi-sattamaḥ
kutaḥ tvam iti ca uvāca prahasan rāvaṇam prati
32. tu atha kapi-sattamaḥ sva-kakṣāt rāvaṇam mumoca.
prahasan ca rāvaṇam prati "kutaḥ tvam" iti uvāca.
32. However, the best of monkeys (Vāli) then released Rāvaṇa from his armpit. Laughing, he asked Rāvaṇa, 'Where are you from?'
विस्मयं तु महद्गत्वा श्रमलोकनिरीक्षणः ।
राक्षसेशो हरीशं तमिदं वचनमब्रवीत् ॥३३॥
33. vismayaṃ tu mahadgatvā śramalokanirīkṣaṇaḥ ,
rākṣaseśo harīśaṃ tamidaṃ vacanamabravīt.
33. vismayam tu mahat gatvā śrama-loka-nirīkṣaṇaḥ
rākṣasa-īśaḥ hari-īśam tam idam vacanam abravīt
33. śramalokanirīkṣaṇaḥ rākṣaseśaḥ tu mahat
vismayam gatvā tam harīśam idam vacanam abravīt
33. The lord of rākṣasas (Rāvaṇa), who was observing the fatigued populace, became greatly astonished. He then spoke these words to that lord of monkeys (Hanumān).
वानरेन्द्र महेन्द्राभ राक्षसेन्द्रो ऽस्मि रावणः ।
युद्धेप्सुरहं संप्राप्तः स चाद्यासादितस्त्वया ॥३४॥
34. vānarendra mahendrābha rākṣasendro'smi rāvaṇaḥ ,
yuddhepsurahaṃ saṃprāptaḥ sa cādyāsāditastvayā.
34. vānara-indra mahendra-ābha rākṣasa-indraḥ asmi rāvaṇaḥ
yuddha-īpsuḥ aham samprāptaḥ saḥ ca adya āsāditaḥ tvayā
34. vānarendra mahendrābha ! aham rākṣasendraḥ rāvaṇaḥ asmi.
aham yuddhepsuḥ samprāptaḥ ca saḥ adya tvayā āsāditaḥ.
34. "O lord of monkeys, you who are like Mahendra! I am Rāvaṇa, the lord of "rākṣasas". I have arrived here desirous of battle, and that (opportunity for battle) has been met by you today."
अहो बलमहो वीर्यमहो गम्भीरता च ते ।
येनाहं पशुवद्गृह्य भ्रामितश्चतुरो ऽर्णवान् ॥३५॥
35. aho balamaho vīryamaho gambhīratā ca te ,
yenāhaṃ paśuvadgṛhya bhrāmitaścaturo'rṇavān.
35. aho balam aho vīryam aho gambhīratā ca te yena
aham paśu-vat gṛhya bhrāmitaḥ caturaḥ arṇavān
35. aho balam aho vīryam ca aho te gambhīratā ! yena aham paśuvat gṛhya caturaḥ arṇavān bhrāmitaḥ .
35. "Oh, what strength! Oh, what valor! And oh, what profound steadfastness you possess! By which I was seized like an animal and made to wander across the four oceans."
एवमश्रान्तवद्वीर शीघ्रमेव च वानर ।
मां चैवोद्वहमानस्तु को ऽन्यो वीरः क्रमिष्यति ॥३६॥
36. evamaśrāntavadvīra śīghrameva ca vānara ,
māṃ caivodvahamānastu ko'nyo vīraḥ kramiṣyati.
36. evam aśrānta-vat vīra śīghram eva ca vānara mām ca
eva ud-vahyamānaḥ tu kaḥ anyaḥ vīraḥ kramiṣyati
36. vīra vānara ! evam aśrāntavat ca śīghram eva
mām ud-vahyamānaḥ anyaḥ kaḥ vīraḥ tu kramiṣyati?
36. "O hero, O monkey, who else could, so tirelessly and so swiftly, carry me like this and traverse (such distances)?"
त्रयाणामेव भूतानां गतिरेषा प्लवंगम ।
मनोऽनिलसुपर्णानां तव वा नात्र संशयः ॥३७॥
37. trayāṇāmeva bhūtānāṃ gatireṣā plavaṃgama ,
mano'nilasuparṇānāṃ tava vā nātra saṃśayaḥ.
37. trayāṇām eva bhūtānām gatiḥ eṣā plavaṅgama
manasanilasuparṇānām tava vā na atra saṃśayaḥ
37. plavaṅgama trayāṇām eva bhūtānām eṣā gatiḥ
manasanilasuparṇānām vā tava na atra saṃśayaḥ
37. O monkey, this speed (gati) belongs only to three entities: the mind, the wind, and Suparna (the mythical eagle). There is no doubt that it is also yours.
सो ऽहं दृष्टबलस्तुभ्यमिच्छामि हरिपुंगव ।
त्वया सह चिरं सख्यं सुस्निग्धं पावकाग्रतः ॥३८॥
38. so'haṃ dṛṣṭabalastubhyamicchāmi haripuṃgava ,
tvayā saha ciraṃ sakhyaṃ susnigdhaṃ pāvakāgrataḥ.
38. saḥ aham dṛṣṭabalaḥ tubhyam icchāmi haripuṅgava
tvayā saha ciram sakhyam susnigadham pāvakāgrataḥ
38. haripuṅgava saḥ aham dṛṣṭabalaḥ tubhyam icchāmi
tvayā saha ciram susnigadham sakhyam pāvakāgrataḥ
38. O best among heroes (Hari-puṅgava), I, whose strength has been witnessed by you, desire a long-lasting, deeply devoted friendship with you, in front of the sacred fire.
दाराः पुत्राः पुरं राष्ट्रं भोगाच्छादनभोजनम् ।
सर्वमेवाविभक्तं नौ भविष्यति हरीश्वर ॥३९॥
39. dārāḥ putrāḥ puraṃ rāṣṭraṃ bhogācchādanabhojanam ,
sarvamevāvibhaktaṃ nau bhaviṣyati harīśvara.
39. dārāḥ putrāḥ puram rāṣṭram bhogācchādanabhojanam
sarvam eva avibhaktam nau bhaviṣyati harīśvara
39. harīśvara dārāḥ putrāḥ puram rāṣṭram

39. O lord of heroes (Hari-īśvara), our wives, sons, cities, kingdoms, and all enjoyments, clothing, and food will certainly be undivided between us.
ततः प्रज्वालयित्वाग्निं ताव् उभौ हरिराक्षसौ ।
भ्रातृत्वमुपसंपन्नौ परिष्वज्य परस्परम् ॥४०॥
40. tataḥ prajvālayitvāgniṃ tāv ubhau harirākṣasau ,
bhrātṛtvamupasaṃpannau pariṣvajya parasparam.
40. tataḥ prajvālayitvā agnim tau ubhau harirākṣasau
bhrātṛtvam upasaṃpannau pariṣvajya parasparam
40. tataḥ agnim prajvālayitvā tau ubhau harirākṣasau

40. Then, having kindled the fire, those two, the monkey and the demon, having attained brotherhood, embraced each other.
अन्योन्यं लम्बितकरौ ततस्तौ हरिराक्षसौ ।
किष्किन्धां विशतुर्हृष्टौ सिंहौ गिरिगुहामिव ॥४१॥
41. anyonyaṃ lambitakarau tatastau harirākṣasau ,
kiṣkindhāṃ viśaturhṛṣṭau siṃhau giriguhāmiva.
41. anyonyam lambitakarau tataḥ tau hari rākṣasau
kiṣkindhām viśatuḥ hṛṣṭau siṃhau giriguhām iva
41. tataḥ tau hari rākṣasau anyonyam lambitakarau
hṛṣṭau siṃhau giriguhām iva kiṣkindhām viśatuḥ
41. Then, those two, the monkey and the rākṣasa, with their hands clasped, joyfully entered Kiṣkindhā, just like two lions entering a mountain cave.
स तत्र मासमुषितः सुग्रीव इव रावणः ।
अमात्यैरागतैर्नीचस्त्रैलोक्योत्सादनार्थिभिः ॥४२॥
42. sa tatra māsamuṣitaḥ sugrīva iva rāvaṇaḥ ,
amātyairāgatairnīcastrailokyotsādanārthibhiḥ.
42. saḥ tatra māsam uṣitaḥ sugrīvaḥ iva rāvaṇaḥ amātyaiḥ
āgataiḥ nīcaiḥ trailokya utsādana arthibhiḥ
42. saḥ rāvaṇaḥ tatra sugrīvaḥ iva māsam uṣitaḥ nīcaiḥ
āgataiḥ trailokya utsādana arthibhiḥ amātyaiḥ
42. There, Rāvaṇa stayed for a month, just as Sugrīva had. He was accompanied by his low-minded ministers who had arrived, intent on the destruction of the three worlds.
एवमेतत् पुरावृत्तं वालिना रावणः प्रभो ।
धर्षितश्च कृतश्चापि भ्राता पावकसंनिधौ ॥४३॥
43. evametat purāvṛttaṃ vālinā rāvaṇaḥ prabho ,
dharṣitaśca kṛtaścāpi bhrātā pāvakasaṃnidhau.
43. evam etat purāvṛttam vālinā rāvaṇaḥ prabho
dharṣitaḥ ca kṛtaḥ ca api bhrātā pāvaka saṃnidhau
43. prabho,
evam etat purāvṛttam.
rāvaṇaḥ vālinā dharṣitaḥ ca api pāvaka saṃnidhau bhrātā ca kṛtaḥ.
43. O lord, this is how it happened in the past: Rāvaṇa was humiliated by Vāli and then made his brother in the presence of the fire (pāvaka).
बलमप्रतिमं राम वालिनो ऽभवदुत्तमम् ।
सो ऽपि तया विनिर्दग्धः शलभो वह्निना यथा ॥४४॥
44. balamapratimaṃ rāma vālino'bhavaduttamam ,
so'pi tayā vinirdagdhaḥ śalabho vahninā yathā.
44. balam apratimam rāma vālinaḥ abhavat uttamam
saḥ api tayā vinirdagdhaḥ śalabhaḥ vahninā yathā
44. rāma,
vālinaḥ balam apratimam uttamam abhavat.
saḥ api tayā vahninā śalabhaḥ yathā vinirdagdhaḥ.
44. O Rāma, Vāli's strength was unequalled and excellent. Yet he (Rāvaṇa) was burnt by her (Sītā's purity), just like a moth by fire.
