कस्य चित्त्वथ कालस्य रामे धर्मपथे स्थिते ।
कालस्तापसरूपेण राजद्वारमुपागमत् ॥१॥

1. Then, after some time, while Rama was established on the path of (natural law) dharma, Time (Kāla) in the guise of an ascetic arrived at the royal gate.
सो ऽब्रवील् लक्ष्मणं वाक्यं धृतिमन्तं यशस्विनम् ।
मां निवेदय रामाय संप्राप्तं कार्यगौरवात् ॥२॥
2. so'bravīl lakṣmaṇaṃ vākyaṃ dhṛtimantaṃ yaśasvinam ,
māṃ nivedaya rāmāya saṃprāptaṃ kāryagauravāt.
2. saḥ abravīt lakṣmaṇam vākyam dhṛtimantam yaśasvinam
mām nivedaya rāmāya saṃprāptam kāryagauravāt
2. saḥ dhṛtimantam yaśasvinam lakṣmaṇam vākyam abravīt: "kāryagauravāt saṃprāptam mām rāmāya nivedaya.
"
2. He spoke to the resolute and glorious Lakshmana: 'Announce me, who has arrived due to the gravity of the matter, to Rama.'
दूतो ह्यतिबलस्याहं महर्षेरमितौजसः ।
रामं दिदृक्षुरायातः कार्येण हि महाबल ॥३॥
3. dūto hyatibalasyāhaṃ maharṣeramitaujasaḥ ,
rāmaṃ didṛkṣurāyātaḥ kāryeṇa hi mahābala.
3. dūtaḥ hi atibalasya aham maharṣeḥ amitaujasaḥ
rāmam didṛkṣuḥ āyātaḥ kāryeṇa hi mahābala
3. aham hi atibalasya amitaujasaḥ maharṣeḥ dūtaḥ (asmi).
he mahābala,
hi kāryeṇa rāmam didṛkṣuḥ āyātaḥ (asmi).
3. Indeed, I am the messenger of the exceedingly powerful great sage (maharṣi) of limitless energy. O mighty one, I have certainly come, desiring to see Rama, on a mission (kārya).
तस्य तद्वचनं श्रुत्वा सौमित्रिस्त्वरयान्वितः ।
न्यवेदयत रामाय तापसस्य विवक्षितम् ॥४॥
4. tasya tadvacanaṃ śrutvā saumitristvarayānvitaḥ ,
nyavedayata rāmāya tāpasasya vivakṣitam.
4. tasya tat vacanam śrutvā saumitriḥ tvarayā
anvitaḥ nyavedayata rāmāya tāpasasya vivakṣitam
4. tasya tat vacanam śrutvā saumitriḥ tvarayā
anvitaḥ rāmāya tāpasasya vivakṣitam nyavedayata
4. Having heard his statement, Lakṣmaṇa, filled with urgency, reported to Rāma what the ascetic wished to communicate.
जयस्व राजन्धर्मेण उभौ लोकौ महाद्युते ।
दूतस्त्वां द्रष्टुमायातस्तपस्वी भास्करप्रभः ॥५॥
5. jayasva rājandharmeṇa ubhau lokau mahādyute ,
dūtastvāṃ draṣṭumāyātastapasvī bhāskaraprabhaḥ.
5. jayasuva rājan dharmeṇa ubhau lokau mahādyute
dūtaḥ tvām draṣṭum āyātaḥ tapasvī bhāskaraprabhaḥ
5. rājan mahādyute dharmeṇa ubhau lokau jayasuva
tvām draṣṭum bhāskaraprabhaḥ tapasvī dūtaḥ āyātaḥ
5. O King, O greatly radiant one, conquer both worlds by adhering to natural law (dharma). An ascetic, a messenger radiant like the sun, has arrived to see you.
तद्वाक्यं लक्ष्मणेनोक्तं श्रुत्वा राम उवाच ह ।
प्रवेश्यतां मुनिस्तात महौजास्तस्य वाक्यधृक् ॥६॥
6. tadvākyaṃ lakṣmaṇenoktaṃ śrutvā rāma uvāca ha ,
praveśyatāṃ munistāta mahaujāstasya vākyadhṛk.
6. tat vākyam lakṣmaṇena uktam śrutvā rāmaḥ uvāca ha
praveśyatām muniḥ tāta mahaujāḥ tasya vākyadhṛk
6. lakṣmaṇena uktam tat vākyam śrutvā rāmaḥ ha uvāca
tāta tasya vākyadhṛk mahaujāḥ muniḥ praveśyatām
6. Having heard that statement spoken by Lakṣmaṇa, Rāma indeed said, "Dear brother, let that greatly powerful sage, who carries his message, be admitted."
सौमित्रिस्तु तथेत्युक्त्वा प्रावेशयत तं मुनिम् ।
ज्वलन्तमिव तेजोभिः प्रदहन्तमिवांशुभिः ॥७॥
7. saumitristu tathetyuktvā prāveśayata taṃ munim ,
jvalantamiva tejobhiḥ pradahantamivāṃśubhiḥ.
7. saumitriḥ tu tathā iti uktvā prāveśayata tam munim
jvalantam iva tejobhiḥ pradahantam iva aṃśubhiḥ
7. saumitriḥ tu tathā iti uktvā tam munim prāveśayata
jvalantam iva tejobhiḥ pradahantam iva aṃśubhiḥ
7. Lakṣmaṇa, saying "So be it," then admitted that sage, who appeared to be blazing with spiritual energy and radiating intensely like sunbeams.
सो ऽभिगम्य रघुश्रेष्ठं दीप्यमानं स्वतेजसा ।
ऋषिर्मधुरया वाचा वर्धस्वेत्याह राघवम् ॥८॥
8. so'bhigamya raghuśreṣṭhaṃ dīpyamānaṃ svatejasā ,
ṛṣirmadhurayā vācā vardhasvetyāha rāghavam.
8. saḥ abhigamya raghu-śreṣṭham dīpyamānam sva-tejasā
ṛṣiḥ madhurayā vācā vardhasva iti āha rāghavam
8. ṛṣiḥ sva-tejasā dīpyamānam raghu-śreṣṭham rāghavam
abhigamya madhurayā vācā vardhasva iti āha
8. Approaching the best of the Raghus, Rama, who was shining with his own brilliance, the seer (ṛṣi) said to him with sweet words, "May you prosper!"
तस्मै रामो महातेजाः पूजामर्घ्य पुरोगमाम् ।
ददौ कुशलमव्यग्रं प्रष्टुं चैवोपचक्रमे ॥९॥
9. tasmai rāmo mahātejāḥ pūjāmarghya purogamām ,
dadau kuśalamavyagraṃ praṣṭuṃ caivopacakrame.
9. tasmai rāmaḥ mahātejāḥ pūjām arghya-purōgamām
dadau kuśalam avyagram praṣṭum ca eva upacakrame
9. mahātejāḥ rāmaḥ tasmai arghya-purōgamām pūjām
dadau ca eva avyagram kuśalam praṣṭum upacakrame
9. Rama, the greatly effulgent one, offered him worship, beginning with the honorific offering of water (arghya), and then calmly began to ask about his well-being.
पृष्ठश्च कुशलं तेन रामेण वदतां वरः ।
आसने काञ्चने दिव्ये निषसाद महायशाः ॥१०॥
10. pṛṣṭhaśca kuśalaṃ tena rāmeṇa vadatāṃ varaḥ ,
āsane kāñcane divye niṣasāda mahāyaśāḥ.
10. pṛṣṭaḥ ca kuśalam tena rāmeṇa vadatām varaḥ
āsane kāñcane divye niṣasāda mahāyaśāḥ
10. tena rāmeṇa kuśalam pṛṣṭaḥ ca,
vadatām varaḥ mahāyaśāḥ divye kāñcane āsane niṣasāda
10. Having been asked about his well-being by Rama, the greatly renowned seer (ṛṣi), who was the best among speakers, sat down on a splendid golden seat.
तमुवाच ततो रामः स्वागतं ते महामुने ।
प्रापयस्व च वाक्यानि यतो दूतस्त्वमागतः ॥११॥
11. tamuvāca tato rāmaḥ svāgataṃ te mahāmune ,
prāpayasva ca vākyāni yato dūtastvamāgataḥ.
11. tam uvāca tataḥ rāmaḥ svāgatam te mahāmune
prāpayasva ca vākyāni yataḥ dūtaḥ tvam āgataḥ
11. tataḥ rāmaḥ tam uvāca,
"mahāmune! te svāgatam! ca,
yataḥ tvam dūtaḥ āgataḥ,
vākyāni prāpayasva.
"
11. Then Rama said to him, "Welcome to you, O great seer (mahāmuni)! And please deliver the messages from whomever you have come as a messenger."
चोदितो राजसिंहेन मुनिर्वाक्यमुदीरयत् ।
द्वन्द्वमेतत् प्रवक्तव्यं न च चक्षुर्हतं वचः ॥१२॥
12. codito rājasiṃhena munirvākyamudīrayat ,
dvandvametat pravaktavyaṃ na ca cakṣurhataṃ vacaḥ.
12. coditaḥ rājasiṃhena muniḥ vākyam udīrayat dvandvam
etat pravaktavyam na ca cakṣuḥ hatam vacaḥ
12. Urged by the lion among kings, the sage (muni) spoke these words: 'This private conversation must take place, and no eye should witness it, nor should any word be heard by an outsider.'
यः शृणोति निरीक्षेद्वा स वध्यस्तव राघव ।
भवेद्वै मुनिमुख्यस्य वचनं यद्यवेक्षसे ॥१३॥
13. yaḥ śṛṇoti nirīkṣedvā sa vadhyastava rāghava ,
bhavedvai munimukhyasya vacanaṃ yadyavekṣase.
13. yaḥ śṛṇoti nirīkṣet vā saḥ vadhyaḥ tava rāghava
bhavet vai munimukhyasya vacanam yadi avekṣase
13. Whoever hears or sees this (conversation), O Rāghava, that person must be slain by you. This will indeed be the command of the chief sage (muni) if you heed it.
तथेति च प्रतिज्ञाय रामो लक्ष्मणमब्रवीत् ।
द्वारि तिष्ठ महाबाहो प्रतिहारं विसर्जय ॥१४॥
14. tatheti ca pratijñāya rāmo lakṣmaṇamabravīt ,
dvāri tiṣṭha mahābāho pratihāraṃ visarjaya.
14. tathā iti ca pratijñāya rāmaḥ lakṣmaṇam abravīt
dvāri tiṣṭha mahābāho pratihāram visarjaya
14. Having agreed, saying 'So be it,' Rāma spoke to Lakṣmaṇa: 'Stand at the door, O mighty-armed one, and dismiss the doorkeeper.'
स मे वध्यः खलु भवेत् कथां द्वन्द्वसमीरिताम् ।
ऋषेर्मम च सौमित्रे पश्येद्वा शृणुया च यः ॥१५॥
15. sa me vadhyaḥ khalu bhavet kathāṃ dvandvasamīritām ,
ṛṣermama ca saumitre paśyedvā śṛṇuyā ca yaḥ.
15. saḥ me vadhyaḥ khalu bhavet kathām dvandvasamīritām
ṛṣeḥ mama ca saumitre paśyet vā śṛṇuyāt ca yaḥ
15. O son of Sumitrā (Lakṣmaṇa), whoever sees or hears the private conversation spoken between the sage (muni) and me, that person shall indeed be killed by me.
ततो निक्षिप्य काकुत्स्थो लक्ष्मणं द्वारसंग्रहे ।
तमुवाच मुनिं वाक्यं कथयस्वेति राघवः ॥१६॥
16. tato nikṣipya kākutstho lakṣmaṇaṃ dvārasaṃgrahe ,
tamuvāca muniṃ vākyaṃ kathayasveti rāghavaḥ.
16. tataḥ nikṣipya kākutsthaḥ lakṣmaṇam dvārasaṃgrahe
tam uvāca munim vākyam kathayasva iti rāghavaḥ
16. tataḥ kākutsthaḥ rāghavaḥ lakṣmaṇam dvārasaṃgrahe
nikṣipya tam munim vākyam kathayasva iti uvāca
16. Then, the descendant of Kakutstha (Rama), having stationed Lakshmana to guard the gate, said these words to that sage (muni), "Please speak."
यत्ते मनीषितं वाक्यं येन वासि समाहितः ।
कथयस्व विशङ्कस्त्वं ममापि हृदि वर्तते ॥१७॥
17. yatte manīṣitaṃ vākyaṃ yena vāsi samāhitaḥ ,
kathayasva viśaṅkastvaṃ mamāpi hṛdi vartate.
17. yat te manīṣitam vākyam yena vā asi samāhitaḥ
kathayasva viśaṅkaḥ tvam mama api hṛdi vartate
17. yat te manīṣitam vākyam vā yena tvam samāhitaḥ
asi viśaṅkaḥ tvam kathayasva mama hṛdi api vartate
17. “Whatever words you desire to speak, or whatever purpose you are intent upon, please speak fearlessly. It (that same thought) is also present in my heart.”
