ततः समीक्ष्य शयने सन्नं शोकेन पार्थिवम् ।
कौसल्या पुत्रशोकार्ता तमुवाच महीपतिम् ॥१॥

1. Then, Kausalya, afflicted by the sorrow for her son, having observed the king on his bed, utterly overcome by grief, spoke to that lord of the earth.
राघवो नरशार्दूल विषमुप्त्वा द्विजिह्ववत् ।
विचरिष्यति कैकेयी निर्मुक्तेव हि पन्नगी ॥२॥
2. rāghavo naraśārdūla viṣamuptvā dvijihvavat ,
vicariṣyati kaikeyī nirmukteva hi pannagī.

vicariṣyati kaikeyī nirmuktā iva hi pannagī
2. naraśārdūla,
kaikeyī rāghavaḥ viṣam dvijihvavat uptvā,

2. O tiger among men, Kaikeyi, having sown poison like a two-tongued serpent concerning Rāghava, will roam about like a female snake that has indeed shed its skin.
विवास्य रामं सुभगा लब्धकामा समाहिता ।
त्रासयिष्यति मां भूयो दुष्टाहिरिव वेश्मनि ॥३॥
3. vivāsya rāmaṃ subhagā labdhakāmā samāhitā ,
trāsayiṣyati māṃ bhūyo duṣṭāhiriva veśmani.

trāsayiṣyati mām bhūyaḥ duṣṭā ahiḥ iva veśmani
3. rāmam vivāsya,
sā subhagā labdhakāmā samāhitā,
veśmani duṣṭā ahiḥ iva,
bhūyaḥ mām trāsayiṣyati.
3. Having exiled Rāma, that 'fortunate' woman (Kaikeyi), having achieved her desire and being resolute, will torment me further, just like a vicious snake in the house.
अथ स्म नगरे रामश्चरन्भैक्षं गृहे वसेत् ।
कामकारो वरं दातुमपि दासं ममात्मजम् ॥४॥
4. atha sma nagare rāmaścaranbhaikṣaṃ gṛhe vaset ,
kāmakāro varaṃ dātumapi dāsaṃ mamātmajam.
4. atha sma nagare rāmaḥ caran bhaikṣam gṛhe vaset
kāmakāraḥ varam dātum api dāsam mama ātmajam
4. atha,
rāmaḥ nagare bhaikṣam caran gṛhe vaset.
kāmakāraḥ api mama ātmajam dāsam varam dātum.
4. Then, Rāma might wander begging for alms in the city and live in some house. It is her arbitrary will to grant a boon, even (if it means making) my own son a slave.
पातयित्वा तु कैकेय्या रामं स्थानाद् यथेष्टतः ।
प्रदिष्टो रक्षसां भागः पर्वणीवाहिताग्निना ॥५॥
5. pātayitvā tu kaikeyyā rāmaṃ sthānād yatheṣṭataḥ ,
pradiṣṭo rakṣasāṃ bhāgaḥ parvaṇīvāhitāgninā.
5. pātayitvā tu kaikeyīyā rāmam sthānāt yatheṣṭataḥ
pradiṣṭaḥ rakṣasām bhāgaḥ parvaṇi iva āhitāgninā
5. tu kaikeyīyā rāmam sthānāt yatheṣṭataḥ pātayitvā,
rakṣasām bhāgaḥ pradiṣṭaḥ,
āhitāgninā parvaṇi iva.
5. But having arbitrarily deposed Rāma from his position, Kaikeyi has assigned his portion to the Rākṣasas, just as one who maintains the sacred fires offers a share on an auspicious occasion.
गजराजगतिर्वीरो महाबाहुर्धनुर्धरः ।
वनमाविशते नूनं सभार्यः सहलक्ष्मणः ॥६॥
6. gajarājagatirvīro mahābāhurdhanurdharaḥ ,
vanamāviśate nūnaṃ sabhāryaḥ sahalakṣmaṇaḥ.
6. gajarājagatiḥ vīraḥ mahābāhuḥ dhanurdharaḥ
vanam āviśate nūnam sabhāryaḥ sahalakṣmaṇaḥ
6. vīraḥ gajarājagatiḥ mahābāhuḥ dhanurdharaḥ
sabhāryaḥ sahalakṣmaṇaḥ nūnam vanam āviśate
6. The hero, whose gait is like that of a royal elephant, mighty-armed and a bow-wielder, surely enters the forest with his wife and Lakṣmaṇa.
वने त्वदृष्टदुःखानां कैकेय्यानुमते त्वया ।
त्यक्तानां वनवासाय का न्ववस्था भविष्यति ॥७॥
7. vane tvadṛṣṭaduḥkhānāṃ kaikeyyānumate tvayā ,
tyaktānāṃ vanavāsāya kā nvavasthā bhaviṣyati.
7. vane tvadṛṣṭaduḥkhānām kaikeyyā anumate tvayā
tyaktānām vanavāsāya kā nu avasthā bhaviṣyati
7. vane tvayā kaikeyyā anumate vanavāsāya tyaktānām

7. In the wilderness, what state will indeed befall those whose sufferings are unseen by you (Kaikeyī), who were abandoned by you for forest-dwelling with your own consent?
ते रत्नहीनास्तरुणाः फलकाले विवासिताः ।
कथं वत्स्यन्ति कृपणाः फलमूलैः कृताशनाः ॥८॥
8. te ratnahīnāstaruṇāḥ phalakāle vivāsitāḥ ,
kathaṃ vatsyanti kṛpaṇāḥ phalamūlaiḥ kṛtāśanāḥ.
8. te ratnahīnāḥ taruṇāḥ phalakāle vivāsitāḥ
katham vatsyanti kṛpaṇāḥ phalamūlaiḥ kṛtāśanāḥ
8. te ratnahīnāḥ taruṇāḥ phalakāle vivāsitāḥ
kṛpaṇāḥ phalamūlaiḥ kṛtāśanāḥ katham vatsyanti
8. Bereft of jewels, those youths, exiled at the time of their prosperity, how will they, the wretched ones, live, having made fruits and roots their sole sustenance?
अपीदानीं स कालः स्यान्मम शोकक्षयः शिवः ।
सभार्यं यत् सह भ्रात्रा पश्येयमिह राघवम् ॥९॥
9. apīdānīṃ sa kālaḥ syānmama śokakṣayaḥ śivaḥ ,
sabhāryaṃ yat saha bhrātrā paśyeyamiha rāghavam.
9. api idānīm saḥ kālaḥ syāt mama śokakṣayaḥ śivaḥ
sabhāryam yat saha bhrātrā paśyeyam iha rāghavam
9. api idānīm saḥ śivaḥ kālaḥ mama śokakṣayaḥ syāt
yat iha rāghavam sabhāryam bhrātrā saha paśyeyam
9. May that auspicious time for the cessation of my sorrow come now, when I may see Rāghava here, accompanied by his wife and brother.
श्रुत्वैवोपस्थितौ वीरौ कदायोध्या भविष्यति ।
यशस्विनी हृष्टजना सूच्छ्रितध्वजमालिनी ॥१०॥
10. śrutvaivopasthitau vīrau kadāyodhyā bhaviṣyati ,
yaśasvinī hṛṣṭajanā sūcchritadhvajamālinī.
10. śrutvā eva upasthitau vīrau kadā ayodhyā bhaviṣyati
yaśasvinī hṛṣṭajanā sūcchritadhvajamālinī
10. kadā vīrau upasthitau śrutvā eva ayodhyā yaśasvinī
hṛṣṭajanā sūcchritadhvajamālinī bhaviṣyati
10. When, upon hearing that the two heroes have arrived, will Ayodhya become glorious, its people joyful, and adorned with high-raised banners?
कदा प्रेक्ष्य नरव्याघ्रावरण्यात् पुनरागतौ ।
नन्दिष्यति पुरी हृष्टा समुद्र इव पर्वणि ॥११॥
11. kadā prekṣya naravyāghrāvaraṇyāt punarāgatau ,
nandiṣyati purī hṛṣṭā samudra iva parvaṇi.
11. kadā prekṣya naravyāghrau āraṇyāt punaḥ āgatau
nandiṣyati purī hṛṣṭā samudraḥ iva parvaṇi
11. kadā purī hṛṣṭā āraṇyāt punaḥ āgatau naravyāghrau

11. When, having seen the two tiger-like men (heroes) returned from the forest, will the city, joyful, rejoice like the ocean on a full moon day (parva)?
कदायोध्यां महाबाहुः पुरीं वीरः प्रवेक्ष्यति ।
पुरस्कृत्य रथे सीतां वृषभो गोवधूमिव ॥१२॥
12. kadāyodhyāṃ mahābāhuḥ purīṃ vīraḥ pravekṣyati ,
puraskṛtya rathe sītāṃ vṛṣabho govadhūmiva.
12. kadā ayodhyām mahābāhuḥ purīm vīraḥ pravekṣyati
puraskṛtya rathe sītām vṛṣabhaḥ govadhūm iva
12. kadā mahābāhuḥ vīraḥ rathe sītām puraskṛtya
ayodhyām purīm pravekṣyati vṛṣabhaḥ govadhūm iva
12. When will the mighty-armed hero enter the city of Ayodhya, having placed Sītā in front on the chariot, just as a bull leads a young cow?
कदा प्राणिसहस्राणि राजमार्गे ममात्मजौ ।
लाजैरवकरिष्यन्ति प्रविशन्तावरिंदमौ ॥१३॥
13. kadā prāṇisahasrāṇi rājamārge mamātmajau ,
lājairavakariṣyanti praviśantāvariṃdamau.
13. kadā prāṇisahasrāṇi rājamārge mama ātmajau
lājaiḥ avakariṣyanti praviśantau arimdamau
13. kadā prāṇisahasrāṇi mama ātmajau arimdamau
praviśantau rājamārge lājaiḥ avakariṣyanti
13. When will thousands of people strew parched grain (lāja) on the royal road for my two sons, the subduers of enemies, as they enter?
कदा सुमनसः कन्या द्विजातीनां फलानि च ।
प्रदिशन्त्यः पुरीं हृष्टाः करिष्यन्ति प्रदक्षिणम् ॥१४॥
14. kadā sumanasaḥ kanyā dvijātīnāṃ phalāni ca ,
pradiśantyaḥ purīṃ hṛṣṭāḥ kariṣyanti pradakṣiṇam.
14. kadā sumanasaḥ kanyāḥ dvijātīnām phalāni ca
pradiśantyaḥ purīm hṛṣṭāḥ kariṣyanti pradakṣiṇam
14. kadā hṛṣṭāḥ kanyāḥ sumanasaḥ ca phalāni dvijātīnām
pradiśantyaḥ purīm pradakṣiṇam kariṣyanti
14. When will the joyful maidens, presenting flowers and fruits to the Brahmins (dvijātī), perform circumambulation of the city?
कदा परिणतो बुद्ध्या वयसा चामरप्रभः ।
अभ्युपैष्यति धर्मज्ञस्त्रिवर्ष इव मां ललन् ॥१५॥
15. kadā pariṇato buddhyā vayasā cāmaraprabhaḥ ,
abhyupaiṣyati dharmajñastrivarṣa iva māṃ lalan.
15. kadā pariṇataḥ buddhyā vayasā ca amaraprabhaḥ
abhyupaiṣyati dharmajñaḥ trivarṣaḥ iva mām lalan
15. kadā saḥ buddhyā ca vayasā pariṇataḥ amaraprabhaḥ
dharmajñaḥ trivarṣaḥ iva lalan mām abhyupaiṣyati
15. When will he, mature in intellect and age, radiant with the splendor of a god, and a knower of natural law (dharma), come to me, playfully like a three-year-old?
निःसंशयं मया मन्ये पुरा वीर कदर्यया ।
पातु कामेषु वत्सेषु मातॄणां शातिताः स्तनाः ॥१६॥
16. niḥsaṃśayaṃ mayā manye purā vīra kadaryayā ,
pātu kāmeṣu vatseṣu mātṝṇāṃ śātitāḥ stanāḥ.
16. niḥsaṃśayam mayā manye purā vīra kadaryayā
pātu kāmeṣu vatseṣu mātṝṇām śātitāḥ stanāḥ
16. vīra,
niḥsaṃśayam manye (yat) purā mayā kadaryayā vatseṣu pātu kāmeṣu (satsu) mātṝṇām stanāḥ śātitāḥ (asan)
16. O hero, I believe that undoubtedly, in a past life, I, acting wickedly, cut off the breasts of mothers while their calves longed to drink.
साहं गौरिव सिंहेन विवत्सा वत्सला कृता ।
कैकेय्या पुरुषव्याघ्र बालवत्सेव गौर्बलात् ॥१७॥
17. sāhaṃ gauriva siṃhena vivatsā vatsalā kṛtā ,
kaikeyyā puruṣavyāghra bālavatseva gaurbalāt.
17. sā aham gauḥ iva siṃhena vivatsā vatsalā kṛtā
kaikeyā puruṣavyāghra bālavatsā iva gauḥ balāt
17. puruṣavyāghra,
sā aham vatsalā (satī) vivatsā kṛtā (asmi) kaikeyā balāt (yathā) siṃhena bālavatsā gauḥ iva (kriyate)
17. O tiger among men (puruṣavyāghra), I, who am so fond of my child (vatsalā), have been made bereft of my calf (vivatsā) by Kaikeyi, just like a cow (gauḥ) with a young calf is forcibly (balāt) deprived of its offspring by a lion (siṃhena).
न हि तावद्गुणैर्जुष्टं सर्वशास्त्रविशारदम् ।
एकपुत्रा विना पुत्रमहं जीवितुमुत्सहे ॥१८॥
18. na hi tāvadguṇairjuṣṭaṃ sarvaśāstraviśāradam ,
ekaputrā vinā putramahaṃ jīvitumutsahe.
18. na hi tāvat guṇaiḥ juṣṭam sarvaśāstraviśāradam
ekaputrā vinā putram aham jīvitum utsahe
18. aham ekaputrā tāvat guṇaiḥ juṣṭam
sarvaśāstraviśāradam putram vinā jīvitum na hi utsahe
18. Indeed, I, having only one son, cannot bear to live without a son who is endowed with such virtues and proficient in all scriptures.
न हि मे जीविते किं चित् सामर्थमिह कल्प्यते ।
अपश्यन्त्याः प्रियं पुत्रं महाबाहुं महाबलम् ॥१९॥
19. na hi me jīvite kiṃ cit sāmarthamiha kalpyate ,
apaśyantyāḥ priyaṃ putraṃ mahābāhuṃ mahābalam.
19. na hi me jīvite kim cit sāmartham iha kalpyate
apaśyantyāḥ priyam putram mahābāhum mahābalam
19. me priyam mahābāhum mahābalam putram apaśyantyāḥ
iha jīvite kim cit sāmartham na hi kalpyate
19. Indeed, for me, not seeing my dear son - who is mighty-armed and extremely powerful - no strength for life is perceived here.
अयं हि मां दीपयते समुत्थितस्तनूजशोकप्रभवो हुताशनः ।
महीमिमां रश्मिभिरुत्तमप्रभो यथा निदाघे भगवान्दिवाकरः ॥२०॥
20. ayaṃ hi māṃ dīpayate samutthitastanūjaśokaprabhavo hutāśanaḥ ,
mahīmimāṃ raśmibhiruttamaprabho yathā nidāghe bhagavāndivākaraḥ.
20. ayam hi mām dīpayate samutthitaḥ
tanūjaśokaprabhavaḥ hutāśanaḥ
mahīm imām raśmibhiḥ uttamaprabhaḥ
yathā nidāghe bhagavān divākaraḥ
20. hi ayam tanūjaśokaprabhavaḥ samutthitaḥ hutāśanaḥ mām dīpayate,
yathā bhagavān uttamaprabhaḥ divākaraḥ nidāghe raśmibhiḥ imām mahīm dīpayate
20. Indeed, this fire, born from the grief for my son, is consuming me, just as the glorious sun (divākara) with its excellent rays parches this earth in summer.
