एवमुक्ता तु वैदेही परुषं लोमहर्षणम् ।
राघवेण सरोषेण भृशं प्रव्यथिताभवत् ॥१॥

1. But Vaidehī, having been addressed thus with harsh, hair-raising words by the enraged Rāghava, became exceedingly distressed.
सा तदश्रुतपूर्वं हि जने महति मैथिली ।
श्रुत्वा भर्तृवचो रूक्षं लज्जया व्रीडिताभवत् ॥२॥
2. sā tadaśrutapūrvaṃ hi jane mahati maithilī ,
śrutvā bhartṛvaco rūkṣaṃ lajjayā vrīḍitābhavat.
2. sā tat aśruta-pūrvam hi jane mahati maithilī
śrutvā bhartṛ-vacaḥ rūkṣam lajjayā vrīḍitā abhavat
2. hi sā maithilī jane mahati tat aśruta-pūrvam

2. Indeed, Maithilī, having heard those harsh words from her husband, words that had never been spoken before in such a large assembly, became overcome with shame.
प्रविशन्तीव गात्राणि स्वान्येव जनकात्मजा ।
वाक्शल्यैस्तैः सशल्येव भृशमश्रूण्यवर्तयत् ॥३॥
3. praviśantīva gātrāṇi svānyeva janakātmajā ,
vākśalyaistaiḥ saśalyeva bhṛśamaśrūṇyavartayat.
3. praviśantī iva gātrāṇi svāni eva janakātmajā
vākśalyaiḥ taiḥ saśalyā iva bhṛśam aśrūṇi avartayat
3. Janaka's daughter (Sītā), as if those verbal arrows were piercing her own very limbs, and as if she herself were deeply wounded by them, shed abundant tears.
ततो बाष्पपरिक्लिष्टं प्रमार्जन्ती स्वमाननम् ।
शनैर्गद्गदया वाचा भर्तारमिदमब्रवीत् ॥४॥
4. tato bāṣpaparikliṣṭaṃ pramārjantī svamānanam ,
śanairgadgadayā vācā bhartāramidamabravīt.
4. tataḥ bāṣpaparikliṣṭam pramārjantī svam ānanam
śanaiḥ gadgadayā vācā bhartāram idam abravīt
4. Then, gently wiping her own tear-stained face, she slowly spoke these words to her husband with a faltering voice.
किं मामसदृशं वाक्यमीदृशं श्रोत्रदारुणम् ।
रूक्षं श्रावयसे वीर प्राकृतः प्राकृतामिव ॥५॥
5. kiṃ māmasadṛśaṃ vākyamīdṛśaṃ śrotradāruṇam ,
rūkṣaṃ śrāvayase vīra prākṛtaḥ prākṛtāmiva.
5. kim mām asadṛśam vākyam īdṛśam śrotradāruṇam
rūkṣam śrāvayase vīra prākṛtaḥ prākṛtām iva
5. O hero, why do you utter such unbefitting, harsh, and ear-jarring words to me, just as a common man would speak to a common woman?
न तथास्मि महाबाहो यथा त्वमवगच्छसि ।
प्रत्ययं गच्छ मे स्वेन चारित्रेणैव ते शपे ॥६॥
6. na tathāsmi mahābāho yathā tvamavagacchasi ,
pratyayaṃ gaccha me svena cāritreṇaiva te śape.
6. na tathā asmi mahābāho yathā tvam avagacchasi
pratyayam gaccha me svena cāritreṇa eva te śape
6. O mighty-armed one, I am not truly as you perceive me to be. Please have faith in me; I swear to you by my own character.
पृथक् स्त्रीणां प्रचारेण जातिं त्वं परिशङ्कसे ।
परित्यजेमां शङ्कां तु यदि ते ऽहं परीक्षिता ॥७॥
7. pṛthak strīṇāṃ pracāreṇa jātiṃ tvaṃ pariśaṅkase ,
parityajemāṃ śaṅkāṃ tu yadi te'haṃ parīkṣitā.
7. pṛthak strīṇām pracāreṇa jātim tvam pariśaṅkase
parityaja imām śaṅkām tu yadi te aham parīkṣitā
7. tvam strīṇām pṛthak pracāreṇa jātim pariśaṅkase.
yadi aham te parīkṣitā (asmi),
tu imām śaṅkām parityaja.
7. You suspect my lineage because of the differing conduct of women. But abandon this doubt if I have been thoroughly tested by you.
यद्यहं गात्रसंस्पर्शं गतास्मि विवशा प्रभो ।
कामकारो न मे तत्र दैवं तत्रापराध्यति ॥८॥
8. yadyahaṃ gātrasaṃsparśaṃ gatāsmi vivaśā prabho ,
kāmakāro na me tatra daivaṃ tatrāparādhyati.
8. yadi aham gātrasaṃsparśam gatā asmi vivaśā prabho
kāmakāraḥ na me tatra daivam tatra aparādhyati
8. prabho,
yadi aham vivaśā gātrasaṃsparśam gatā asmi,
tatra me kāmakāraḥ na (asti); tatra daivam aparādhyati.
8. O lord (prabho), if I, being helpless, came into bodily contact, it was not by my own will in that instance; destiny (daiva) is to blame there.
मदधीनं तु यत्तन्मे हृदयं त्वयि वर्तते ।
पराधीनेषु गात्रेषु किं करिष्याम्यनीश्वरा ॥९॥
9. madadhīnaṃ tu yattanme hṛdayaṃ tvayi vartate ,
parādhīneṣu gātreṣu kiṃ kariṣyāmyanīśvarā.
9. madadhīnam tu yat tat me hṛdayam tvayi vartate
parādhīneṣu gātreṣu kim kariṣyāmi anīśvarā
9. tu yat tat madadhīnam me hṛdayam tvayi vartate.
parādhīneṣu gātreṣu (satsu) anīśvarā aham kim kariṣyāmi?
9. But my heart, which is under my control, remains devoted to you. What can I, being powerless, do concerning my limbs which are under the control of others (or circumstances)?
सहसंवृद्धभावाच्च संसर्गेण च मानद ।
यद्यहं ते न विज्ञाता हता तेनास्मि शाश्वतम् ॥१०॥
10. sahasaṃvṛddhabhāvācca saṃsargeṇa ca mānada ,
yadyahaṃ te na vijñātā hatā tenāsmi śāśvatam.
10. sahasamvṛddhabhāvāt ca saṃsargeṇa ca mānada
yadi aham te na vijñātā hatā tena asmi śāśvatam
10. mānada,
yadi sahasamvṛddhabhāvāt ca,
saṃsargeṇa ca,
aham te na vijñātā (asmi),
(tarhi) tena (kāraṇena) śāśvatam hatā asmi.
10. O giver of honor (mānada), if, despite our affection (bhāva) that grew together (saha saṃvṛddha) and our close association (saṃsarga), I am still not truly known by you, then I am eternally ruined by that fact.
प्रेषितस्ते यदा वीरो हनूमानवलोककः ।
लङ्कास्थाहं त्वया वीर किं तदा न विसर्जिता ॥११॥
11. preṣitaste yadā vīro hanūmānavalokakaḥ ,
laṅkāsthāhaṃ tvayā vīra kiṃ tadā na visarjitā.
11. preṣitaḥ te yadā vīraḥ hanūmān avalokakaḥ
laṅkāsthā aham tvayā vīra kim tadā na visarjitā
11. Vīra,
yadā te vīraḥ hanūmān avalokakaḥ preṣitaḥ,
tadā laṅkāsthā aham tvayā kim na visarjitā
11. O hero, when the valiant Hanuman was sent as a scout, why was I, then residing in Laṅkā, not released by you?
प्रत्यक्षं वानरेन्द्रस्य त्वद्वाक्यसमनन्तरम् ।
त्वया संत्यक्तया वीर त्यक्तं स्याज्जीवितं मया ॥१२॥
12. pratyakṣaṃ vānarendrasya tvadvākyasamanantaram ,
tvayā saṃtyaktayā vīra tyaktaṃ syājjīvitaṃ mayā.
12. pratyakṣam vānanarendrasya tvadvākyasamanantaram
tvayā saṃtyaktayā vīra tyaktam syāt jīvitam mayā
12. Vīra,
vānanarendrasya pratyakṣam tvadvākyasamanantaram,
tvayā saṃtyaktayā,
mayā jīvitam tyaktam syāt
12. O hero, if I had been forsaken by you directly after your words, in the presence of the king of monkeys, my life would have surely been given up by me.
न वृथा ते श्रमो ऽयं स्यात् संशये न्यस्य जीवितम् ।
सुहृज्जनपरिक्लेशो न चायं निष्फलस्तव ॥१३॥
13. na vṛthā te śramo'yaṃ syāt saṃśaye nyasya jīvitam ,
suhṛjjanaparikleśo na cāyaṃ niṣphalastava.
13. na vṛthā te śramaḥ ayam syāt saṃśaye nyasya jīvitam
suhṛjjanaparikleśaḥ na ca ayam niṣphalaḥ tava
13. Ayam te śramaḥ jīvitam saṃśaye nyasya na vṛthā syāt.
Ca ayam tava suhṛjjanaparikleśaḥ na niṣphalaḥ.
13. This effort of yours, risking your life, would not be in vain. And this distress of your well-wishers would not be fruitless.
त्वया तु नरशार्दूल क्रोधमेवानुवर्तता ।
लघुनेव मनुष्येण स्त्रीत्वमेव पुरस्कृतम् ॥१४॥
14. tvayā tu naraśārdūla krodhamevānuvartatā ,
laghuneva manuṣyeṇa strītvameva puraskṛtam.
14. tvayā tu naraśārdūla krodham eva anuvarthatā
laghunā iva manuṣyeṇa strītvam eva puraskṛtam
14. Tu naraśārdūla,
tvayā krodham eva anuvarthatā,
laghunā manuṣyeṇa iva,
strītvam eva puraskṛtam
14. But you, O tiger among men, by merely indulging in anger, have, like a trivial man, only emphasized your feminine disposition.
अपदेशेन जनकान्नोत्पत्तिर्वसुधातलात् ।
मम वृत्तं च वृत्तज्ञ बहु ते न पुरस्कृतम् ॥१५॥
15. apadeśena janakānnotpattirvasudhātalāt ,
mama vṛttaṃ ca vṛttajña bahu te na puraskṛtam.
15. apadeśena janakāt na utpattiḥ vasudhātalāt
mama vṛttam ca vṛttajña bahu te na puraskṛtam
15. janakāt vasudhātalāt utpattiḥ apadeśena na
vṛttajña te mama vṛttam ca bahu na puraskṛtam
15. My origin, being from Janaka and from the earth, is not a mere pretext. O knower of character, my conduct has not been much esteemed by you.
न प्रमाणीकृतः पाणिर्बाल्ये बालेन पीडितः ।
मम भक्तिश्च शीलं च सर्वं ते पृष्ठतः कृतम् ॥१६॥
16. na pramāṇīkṛtaḥ pāṇirbālye bālena pīḍitaḥ ,
mama bhaktiśca śīlaṃ ca sarvaṃ te pṛṣṭhataḥ kṛtam.
16. na pramāṇīkṛtaḥ pāṇiḥ bālye bālena pīḍitaḥ mama
bhaktiḥ ca śīlam ca sarvam te pṛṣṭhataḥ kṛtam
16. bālye bālena pīḍitaḥ pāṇiḥ na pramāṇīkṛtaḥ te
mama bhaktiḥ ca śīlam ca sarvam pṛṣṭhataḥ kṛtam
16. My hand, grasped by you as a boy in childhood, has not been recognized as proof (of my unwavering commitment). My devotion (bhakti) and my character - all of this has been disregarded by you.
एवं ब्रुवाणा रुदती बाष्पगद्गदभाषिणी ।
अब्रवील् लक्ष्मणं सीता दीनं ध्यानपरं स्थितम् ॥१७॥
17. evaṃ bruvāṇā rudatī bāṣpagadgadabhāṣiṇī ,
abravīl lakṣmaṇaṃ sītā dīnaṃ dhyānaparaṃ sthitam.
17. evam bruvāṇā rudatī bāṣpagadgadabhāṣiṇī abravīt
lakṣmaṇam sītā dīnam dhyānaparam sthitam
17. evam bruvāṇā rudatī bāṣpagadgadabhāṣiṇī sītā

17. Speaking thus, weeping, and with her voice choked by tears, Sītā addressed Lakṣmaṇa, who stood distressed and absorbed in deep meditation (dhyāna).
चितां मे कुरु सौमित्रे व्यसनस्यास्य भेषजम् ।
मिथ्यापवादोपहता नाहं जीवितुमुत्सहे ॥१८॥
18. citāṃ me kuru saumitre vyasanasyāsya bheṣajam ,
mithyāpavādopahatā nāhaṃ jīvitumutsahe.
18. citām me kuru saumitre vyasanasya asya bheṣajam
mithyāpavādopahatā na aham jīvitum utsahe
18. saumitre me citām kuru asya vyasanasya (idam)
bheṣajam mithyāpavādopahatā aham jīvitum na utsahe
18. O Saumitra, prepare a funeral pyre for me; it is the only remedy for this immense suffering. Struck down by false accusations, I no longer desire to live.
अप्रीतस्य गुणैर्भर्तुस्त्यक्तया जनसंसदि ।
या क्षमा मे गतिर्गन्तुं प्रवेक्ष्ये हव्यवाहनम् ॥१९॥
19. aprītasya guṇairbhartustyaktayā janasaṃsadi ,
yā kṣamā me gatirgantuṃ pravekṣye havyavāhanam.
19. aprītasya guṇaiḥ bhartuḥ tyaktayā janasaṃsadi
yā kṣamā me gatiḥ gantum pravekṣye havyavāhanam
19. bhartuḥ guṇaiḥ aprītasya janasaṃsadi tyaktayā
me yā kṣamā gatiḥ gantum havyavāhanam pravekṣye
19. Since my husband is displeased with my character and I have been abandoned in the assembly of people, the only proper course of action (gati) for me is to enter the fire.
एवमुक्तस्तु वैदेह्या लक्ष्मणः परवीरहा ।
अमर्षवशमापन्नो राघवाननमैक्षत ॥२०॥
20. evamuktastu vaidehyā lakṣmaṇaḥ paravīrahā ,
amarṣavaśamāpanno rāghavānanamaikṣata.
20. evam uktaḥ tu vaidehyā lakṣmaṇaḥ paravīrahā
amarṣavaśam āpannaḥ rāghavānanam aikṣata
20. vaidehyā evam uktaḥ paravīrahā lakṣmaṇaḥ tu
amarṣavaśam āpannaḥ rāghavānanam aikṣata
20. Addressed thus by Vaidehī, Lakshmana, the slayer of hostile heroes, overcome by indignation, looked at Rāghava's face.
स विज्ञाय मनश्छन्दं रामस्याकारसूचितम् ।
चितां चकार सौमित्रिर्मते रामस्य वीर्यवान् ॥२१॥
21. sa vijñāya manaśchandaṃ rāmasyākārasūcitam ,
citāṃ cakāra saumitrirmate rāmasya vīryavān.
21. saḥ vijñāya manaḥ chandam rāmasya ākārasūcitam
citām cakāra saumitriḥ mate rāmasya vīryavān
21. saḥ vīryavān saumitriḥ rāmasya ākārasūcitam manaḥ chandam vijñāya,
rāmasya mate citām cakāra
21. Having understood Rāma's intention (manas) as indicated by his expression, the valorous Saumitri (Lakshmana) then prepared a pyre, in accordance with Rāma's wish.
अधोमुखं ततो रामं शनैः कृत्वा प्रदक्षिणम् ।
उपासर्पत वैदेही दीप्यमानं हुताशनम् ॥२२॥
22. adhomukhaṃ tato rāmaṃ śanaiḥ kṛtvā pradakṣiṇam ,
upāsarpata vaidehī dīpyamānaṃ hutāśanam.
22. adhaḥmukham tataḥ rāmam śanaiḥ kṛtvā pradakṣiṇam
upāsarpat vaidehī dīpyamānam hutāśanam
22. tataḥ vaidehī adhaḥmukham rāmam śanaiḥ pradakṣiṇam kṛtvā,
dīpyamānam hutāśanam upāsarpat
22. Then, Vaidehī (Sītā), having slowly circumambulated Rāma, whose face was downcast, approached the blazing fire.
प्रणम्य देवताभ्यश्च ब्राह्मणेभ्यश्च मैथिली ।
बद्धाञ्जलिपुटा चेदमुवाचाग्निसमीपतः ॥२३॥
23. praṇamya devatābhyaśca brāhmaṇebhyaśca maithilī ,
baddhāñjalipuṭā cedamuvācāgnisamīpataḥ.
23. praṇamya devatābʰyaḥ ca brāhmaṇebʰyaḥ ca maithilī
baddhāñjalipuṭā ca idam uvāca agnisamīpataḥ
23. maithilī devatābʰyaḥ ca brāhmaṇebʰyaḥ ca praṇamya
baddhāñjalipuṭā ca agnisamīpataḥ idam uvāca
23. Having bowed to the deities and also to the brahmins, Maithili, with folded hands, spoke these words from near the fire.
यथा मे हृदयं नित्यं नापसर्पति राघवात् ।
तथा लोकस्य साक्षी मां सर्वतः पातु पावकः ॥२४॥
24. yathā me hṛdayaṃ nityaṃ nāpasarpati rāghavāt ,
tathā lokasya sākṣī māṃ sarvataḥ pātu pāvakaḥ.
24. yatʰā me hṛdayaṃ nityaṃ na apasarpati rāgʰavāt
tatʰā lokasya sākṣī māṃ sarvataḥ pātu pāvakaḥ
24. yatʰā me hṛdayaṃ nityaṃ rāgʰavāt na apasarpati
tatʰā lokasya sākṣī pāvakaḥ māṃ sarvataḥ pātu
24. Just as my heart never deviates from Rāghava, so may Pāvaka, the witness of the world, protect me completely.
एवमुक्त्वा तु वैदेही परिक्रम्य हुताशनम् ।
विवेश ज्वलनं दीप्तं निःसङ्गेनान्तरात्मना ॥२५॥
25. evamuktvā tu vaidehī parikramya hutāśanam ,
viveśa jvalanaṃ dīptaṃ niḥsaṅgenāntarātmanā.
25. evam uktvā tu vaidehī parikramya hutāśanam
viveśa jvalanaṃ dīptaṃ niḥsaṅgena antarātmanā
25. vaidehī evam uktvā tu hutāśanam parikramya

25. Having thus spoken, Vaidehi (Sita), after circumambulating the sacred fire, entered the blazing, luminous flames with an unattached inner spirit (antarātman).
जनः स सुमहांस्तत्र बालवृद्धसमाकुलः ।
ददर्श मैथिलीं तत्र प्रविशन्तीं हुताशनम् ॥२६॥
26. janaḥ sa sumahāṃstatra bālavṛddhasamākulaḥ ,
dadarśa maithilīṃ tatra praviśantīṃ hutāśanam.
26. janaḥ sa sumahān tatra bālavṛddhasamākulaḥ
dadarśa maithilīṃ tatra praviśantīṃ hutāśanam
26. tatra saḥ sumahān bālavṛddhasamākulaḥ janaḥ

26. That very large crowd there, teeming with children and elders, saw Maithili entering the sacred fire.
तस्यामग्निं विशन्त्यां तु हाहेति विपुलः स्वनः ।
रक्षसां वानराणां च संबभूवाद्भुतोपमः ॥२७॥
27. tasyāmagniṃ viśantyāṃ tu hāheti vipulaḥ svanaḥ ,
rakṣasāṃ vānarāṇāṃ ca saṃbabhūvādbhutopamaḥ.
27. tasyām agnim viśantyām tu hā hā iti vipulaḥ svanaḥ
rakṣasām vānarāṇām ca saṃbabhūva adbhutopamaḥ
27. tasyām agnim viśantyām tu rakṣasām vānarāṇām ca
hā hā iti vipulaḥ adbhutopamaḥ svanaḥ saṃbabhūva
27. When she was entering the fire, a great cry of "hā hā" arose from both the Rākṣasas and the Vanaras, a sound that was truly astonishing.
