राममाश्वासयाने तु लक्ष्मणे भ्रातृवत्सले ।
निक्षिप्य गुल्मान् स्वस्थाने तत्रागच्छद्विभीषणः ॥१॥

1. While Lakṣmaṇa, who was very affectionate towards his brother, was consoling Rāma, Vibhīṣaṇa arrived there after placing his military divisions in their proper positions.
नानाप्रहरणैर्वीरैश्चतुर्भिः सचिवैर्वृतः ।
नीलाञ्जनचयाकारैर्मातंगैरिव यूथपः ॥२॥
2. nānāpraharaṇairvīraiścaturbhiḥ sacivairvṛtaḥ ,
nīlāñjanacayākārairmātaṃgairiva yūthapaḥ.

2. He was surrounded by four heroic ministers, armed with various weapons, resembling a leader of a herd of elephants, whose bodies are like heaps of blue collyrium.
सो ऽभिगम्य महात्मानं राघवं शोकलालसं ।
वानरांश्चैव ददृशे बाष्पपर्याकुलेक्षणान् ॥३॥
3. so'bhigamya mahātmānaṃ rāghavaṃ śokalālasaṃ ,
vānarāṃścaiva dadṛśe bāṣpaparyākulekṣaṇān.
3. saḥ abhigamya mahātmānam rāghavam śokalālasam
vānarān ca eva dadṛśe bāṣpaparyākulekṣaṇān
3. saḥ śokalālasam mahātmānam rāghavam abhigamya

3. Having approached the great-souled (mahātman) Rāma, who was overwhelmed with grief, he also saw the monkeys whose eyes were filled with tears.
राघवं च महात्मानमिक्ष्वाकुकुलनन्दनम् ।
ददर्श मोहमापन्नं लक्ष्मणस्याङ्कमाश्रितम् ॥४॥
4. rāghavaṃ ca mahātmānamikṣvākukulanandanam ,
dadarśa mohamāpannaṃ lakṣmaṇasyāṅkamāśritam.
4. rāghavam ca mahātmānam ikṣvākukulanandanam
dadarśa moham āpannam lakṣmaṇasya aṅkam āśritam
4. ca mahātmānam ikṣvākukulanandanam moham āpannam

4. He also saw the great-souled (mahātman) Rāma, the delight of the Ikṣvāku lineage, who had fallen into a swoon and was resting on Lakṣmaṇa's lap.
व्रीडितं शोकसंतप्तं दृष्ट्वा रामं विभीषणः ।
अन्तर्दुःखेन दीनात्मा किमेतदिति सो ऽब्रवीत् ॥५॥
5. vrīḍitaṃ śokasaṃtaptaṃ dṛṣṭvā rāmaṃ vibhīṣaṇaḥ ,
antarduḥkhena dīnātmā kimetaditi so'bravīt.
5. vrīḍitam śokasaṃtaptam dṛṣṭvā rāmam vibhīṣaṇaḥ
antarduḥkhena dīnātmā kim etat iti saḥ abravīt

5. Having seen Rāma, who was embarrassed and distressed by sorrow, Vibhīṣaṇa, whose spirit (ātman) was dejected by inner grief, asked, 'What is this?'
विभीषण मुखं दृष्ट्वा सुग्रीवं तांश्च वानरान् ।
उवाच लक्ष्मणो वाक्यमिदं बाष्पपरिप्लुतः ॥६॥
6. vibhīṣaṇa mukhaṃ dṛṣṭvā sugrīvaṃ tāṃśca vānarān ,
uvāca lakṣmaṇo vākyamidaṃ bāṣpapariplutaḥ.
6. vibhīṣaṇa mukham dṛṣṭvā sugrīvam tān ca vānarān
uvāca lakṣmaṇaḥ vākyam idam bāṣpaparīplutaḥ
6. bāṣpaparīplutaḥ lakṣmaṇaḥ vibhīṣaṇa mukham

6. Lakṣmaṇa, his eyes filled with tears, saw Vibhīṣaṇa's face, Sūgrīva, and those monkeys, and then spoke these words.
हतामिन्द्रजिता सीतामिह श्रुत्वैव राघवः ।
हनूमद्वचनात् सौम्य ततो मोहमुपागतः ॥७॥
7. hatāmindrajitā sītāmiha śrutvaiva rāghavaḥ ,
hanūmadvacanāt saumya tato mohamupāgataḥ.
7. hatām indrajitā sītām iha śrutvā eva rāghavaḥ
hanūmadvacanāt saumya tataḥ moham upāgataḥ
7. saumya iha indrajitā hatām sītām hanūmadvacanāt
śrutvā eva rāghavaḥ tataḥ moham upāgataḥ
7. O gentle one (saumya), having heard here from Hanūmān's words that Sītā had been killed by Indrajit, Rāghava then fell unconscious.
कथयन्तं तु सौमित्रिं संनिवार्य विभीषणः ।
पुष्कलार्थमिदं वाक्यं विसंज्ञं राममब्रवीत् ॥८॥
8. kathayantaṃ tu saumitriṃ saṃnivārya vibhīṣaṇaḥ ,
puṣkalārthamidaṃ vākyaṃ visaṃjñaṃ rāmamabravīt.
8. kathayantam tu saumitrim saṃnivārya vibhīṣaṇaḥ
puṣkalārtham idam vākyam visaṃjñam rāmam abravīt
8. tu vibhīṣaṇaḥ kathayantam saumitrim saṃnivārya
visaṃjñam rāmam idam puṣkalārtham vākyam abravīt
8. But Vibhīṣaṇa, having restrained Saumitri (Lakṣmaṇa) who was speaking, then addressed Rāma, who was unconscious, with these words of great significance.
मनुजेन्द्रार्तरूपेण यदुक्तस्त्वं हनूमता ।
तदयुक्तमहं मन्ये सागरस्येव शोषणम् ॥९॥
9. manujendrārtarūpeṇa yaduktastvaṃ hanūmatā ,
tadayuktamahaṃ manye sāgarasyeva śoṣaṇam.
9. manujendra ārtarūpeṇa yat uktaḥ tvam hanūmatā
tat ayuktam aham manye sāgarasya iva śoṣaṇam
9. manujendra aham manye yat tvam hanūmatā ārtarūpeṇa
uktaḥ tat ayuktam sāgarasya iva śoṣaṇam
9. O king of men, what you were told by Hanumān, presented in a distressing way, I consider improper, just like the drying up of the ocean.
अभिप्रायं तु जानामि रावणस्य दुरात्मनः ।
सीतां प्रति महाबाहो न च घातं करिष्यति ॥१०॥
10. abhiprāyaṃ tu jānāmi rāvaṇasya durātmanaḥ ,
sītāṃ prati mahābāho na ca ghātaṃ kariṣyati.
10. abhiprāyam tu jānāmi rāvaṇasya durātmanaḥ
sītām prati mahābāho na ca ghātam kariṣyati
10. mahābāho aham tu rāvaṇasya durātmanaḥ sītām
prati abhiprāyam jānāmi ca na ghātam kariṣyati
10. O mighty-armed one, I know the true intention of the evil-minded Rāvaṇa regarding Sītā, and he will not harm her.
याच्यमानः सुबहुशो मया हितचिकीर्षुणा ।
वैदेहीमुत्सृजस्वेति न च तत् कृतवान् वचः ॥११॥
11. yācyamānaḥ subahuśo mayā hitacikīrṣuṇā ,
vaidehīmutsṛjasveti na ca tat kṛtavān vacaḥ.
11. yācyamānaḥ subahuśaḥ mayā hitacikīrṣuṇā
vaidehīm utsṛjasva iti na ca tat kṛtavān vacaḥ
11. mayā hitacikīrṣuṇā subahuśaḥ yācyamānaḥ
vaidehīm utsṛjasva iti ca tat vacaḥ na kṛtavān
11. Though implored repeatedly by me, who desired his welfare, saying 'Release Vaidehī (Sītā)', he did not heed that word.
नैव साम्ना न भेदेन न दानेन कुतो युधा ।
सा द्रष्टुमपि शक्येत नैव चान्येन केन चित् ॥१२॥
12. naiva sāmnā na bhedena na dānena kuto yudhā ,
sā draṣṭumapi śakyeta naiva cānyena kena cit.
12. na eva sāmnā na bhedena na dānena kutaḥ yudhā sā
draṣṭum api śakyeta na eva ca anyena kena cit
12. sā sāmnā na eva bhedena na dānena na yudhā kutaḥ
draṣṭum api śakyeta ca anyena kena cit na eva
12. She cannot be reached by conciliation, nor by sowing discord, nor by offering gifts, much less by war; nor indeed by any other means.
वानरान्मोहयित्वा तु प्रतियातः स राक्षसः ।
चैत्यं निकुम्भिलां नाम यत्र होमं करिष्यति ॥१३॥
13. vānarānmohayitvā tu pratiyātaḥ sa rākṣasaḥ ,
caityaṃ nikumbhilāṃ nāma yatra homaṃ kariṣyati.
13. vānaran mohayitvā tu pratiyātaḥ saḥ rākṣasaḥ
caityaṃ nikumbhilāṃ nāma yatra homaṃ kariṣyati
13. saḥ rākṣasaḥ vānaran mohayitvā tu pratiyātaḥ
yatra nikumbhilāṃ nāma caityaṃ homaṃ kariṣyati
13. That demon, having deluded the monkeys, has returned to the shrine named Nikumbhilā, where he will perform a Vedic fire ritual.
हुतवानुपयातो हि देवैरपि सवासवैः ।
दुराधर्षो भवत्येष संग्रामे रावणात्मजः ॥१४॥
14. hutavānupayāto hi devairapi savāsavaiḥ ,
durādharṣo bhavatyeṣa saṃgrāme rāvaṇātmajaḥ.
14. hutavān upayātaḥ hi devaiḥ api savāsavaiḥ
durādharṣaḥ bhavati eṣaḥ saṅgrāme rāvaṇātmajaḥ
14. hi eṣaḥ rāvaṇātmajaḥ hutavān upayātaḥ devaiḥ
api savāsavaiḥ saṅgrāme durādharṣaḥ bhavati
14. Indeed, if he completes the Vedic fire ritual, this son of Rāvaṇa becomes invincible in battle, even by the gods along with Indra.
तेन मोहयता नूनमेषा माया प्रयोजिता ।
विघ्नमन्विच्छता तात वानराणां पराक्रमे ।
ससैन्यास्तत्र गच्छामो यावत्तन्न समाप्यते ॥१५॥
15. tena mohayatā nūnameṣā māyā prayojitā ,
vighnamanvicchatā tāta vānarāṇāṃ parākrame ,
sasainyāstatra gacchāmo yāvattanna samāpyate.
15. tena mohayatā nūnaṃ eṣā māyā
prayojitā vighnaṃ anvicchatā tāta
vānarāṇāṃ parākrame sasainyāḥ tatra
gacchāmaḥ yāvat tat na samāpyate
15. tāta nūnaṃ eṣā māyā tena mohayatā
vānarāṇāṃ parākrame vighnaṃ
anvicchatā prayojitā sasainyāḥ tatra
gacchāmaḥ yāvat tat na samāpyate
15. My dear, that deluder has certainly employed this illusion (māyā) because he desires to create an obstacle to the monkeys' heroic actions. Let us go there with our army before it is completed.
त्यजेमं नरशार्दूलमिथ्या संतापमागतम् ।
सीदते हि बलं सर्वं दृष्ट्वा त्वां शोककर्शितम् ॥१६॥
16. tyajemaṃ naraśārdūlamithyā saṃtāpamāgatam ,
sīdate hi balaṃ sarvaṃ dṛṣṭvā tvāṃ śokakarśitam.
16. tyaja imaṃ naraśārdūla mithyā saṃtāpaṃ āgatam
sīdate hi balaṃ sarvaṃ dṛṣṭvā tvāṃ śokakarśitam
16. naraśārdūla tyaja imaṃ mithyā āgatam saṃtāpaṃ
hi sarvaṃ balaṃ tvāṃ śokakarśitam dṛṣṭvā sīdate
16. O tiger among men, give up this false distress that has overcome you. For indeed, the entire army becomes disheartened seeing you weakened by sorrow.
इह त्वं स्वस्थ हृदयस्तिष्ठ सत्त्वसमुच्छ्रितः ।
लक्ष्मणं प्रेषयास्माभिः सह सैन्यानुकर्षिभिः ॥१७॥
17. iha tvaṃ svastha hṛdayastiṣṭha sattvasamucchritaḥ ,
lakṣmaṇaṃ preṣayāsmābhiḥ saha sainyānukarṣibhiḥ.
17. iha tvam svastha hṛdayaḥ tiṣṭha sattvasamucchritaḥ
lakṣmaṇam preṣaya asmābhiḥ saha sainyānukarṣibhiḥ
17. tvam iha svastha hṛdayaḥ sattvasamucchritaḥ tiṣṭha
asmābhiḥ saha sainyānukarṣibhiḥ lakṣmaṇam preṣaya
17. You, with a calm heart, remain here, imbued with strength. Send Lakṣmaṇa to go with us and the commanders who lead the troops.
एष तं नरशार्दूलो रावणिं निशितैः शरैः ।
त्याजयिष्यति तत् कर्म ततो वध्यो भविष्यति ॥१८॥
18. eṣa taṃ naraśārdūlo rāvaṇiṃ niśitaiḥ śaraiḥ ,
tyājayiṣyati tat karma tato vadhyo bhaviṣyati.
18. eṣa tam naraśārdūlaḥ rāvaṇim niśitaiḥ śaraiḥ
tyājayişyati tat karma tataḥ vadhyaḥ bhavişyati
18. eṣa naraśārdūlaḥ niśitaiḥ śaraiḥ tam rāvaṇim
tat karma tyājayişyati tataḥ vadhyaḥ bhavişyati
18. This foremost of men (Lakṣmaṇa) will make Rāvaṇi relinquish that action (karma) with his sharp arrows. Thereafter, he will become vulnerable to being killed.
तस्यैते निशितास्तीक्ष्णाः पत्रिपत्राङ्गवाजिनः ।
पतत्रिण इवासौम्याः शराः पास्यन्ति शोणितम् ॥१९॥
19. tasyaite niśitāstīkṣṇāḥ patripatrāṅgavājinaḥ ,
patatriṇa ivāsaumyāḥ śarāḥ pāsyanti śoṇitam.
19. tasya ete niśitāḥ tīkṣṇāḥ patripattrāṅgavājinaḥ
patatriṇaḥ iva asaumyāḥ śarāḥ pāsyanti śoṇitam
19. ete niśitāḥ tīkṣṇāḥ patripattrāṅgavājinaḥ asaumyāḥ
patatriṇaḥ iva śarāḥ tasya śoṇitam pāsyanti
19. These sharpened, keen arrows, winged and swift, fierce like predatory birds, will drink his (Rāvaṇi's) blood.
तत् संदिश महाबाहो लक्ष्मणं शुभलक्षणम् ।
राक्षसस्य विनाशाय वज्रं वज्रधरो यथा ॥२०॥
20. tat saṃdiśa mahābāho lakṣmaṇaṃ śubhalakṣaṇam ,
rākṣasasya vināśāya vajraṃ vajradharo yathā.
20. tat sandiśa mahābāho lakṣmaṇam śubhalakṣaṇam
rākṣasasya vināśāya vajram vajradharaḥ yathā
20. tat mahābāho śubhalakṣaṇam lakṣmaṇam rākṣasasya
vināśāya sandiśa yathā vajradharaḥ vajram
20. Therefore, O mighty-armed one, command Lakṣmaṇa, the one with auspicious signs, for the destruction of the demon, just as the thunderbolt-wielder (Indra) wields his thunderbolt.
मनुजवर न कालविप्रकर्षो रिपुनिधनं प्रति यत् क्षमो ऽद्य कर्तुम् ।
त्वमतिसृज रिपोर्वधाय बाणीमसुरपुरोन्मथने यथा महेन्द्रः ॥२१॥
21. manujavara na kālaviprakarṣo ripunidhanaṃ prati yat kṣamo'dya kartum ,
tvamatisṛja riporvadhāya bāṇīmasurapuronmathane yathā mahendraḥ.
21. manujavara na kālaviprakarṣaḥ
ripunidhanam prati yat kṣamaḥ adya kartum
tvam atisṛja ripoḥ vadhāya bāṇīm
asurapuronmathane yathā mahendraḥ
21. manujavara ripunidhanam prati yat
tvam adya kartum kṣamaḥ na kālaviprakarṣaḥ
tvam atisṛja bāṇīm ripoḥ
vadhāya yathā mahendraḥ asurapuronmathane
21. O best among men, there should be no delay in destroying the enemy, a task you are capable of accomplishing today. Release your arrow to slay the foe, just as Mahendra (Indra) utterly crushes the cities of the asuras.
समाप्तकर्मा हि स राक्षसेन्द्रो भवत्यदृश्यः समरे सुरासुरैः ।
युयुत्सता तेन समाप्तकर्मणा भवेत् सुराणामपि संशयो महान् ॥२२॥
22. samāptakarmā hi sa rākṣasendro bhavatyadṛśyaḥ samare surāsuraiḥ ,
yuyutsatā tena samāptakarmaṇā bhavet surāṇāmapi saṃśayo mahān.
22. samāptakarmā hi saḥ rākṣasendraḥ
bhavati adṛśyaḥ samare surāsuraiḥ
yuyutsatā tena samāptakarmaṇā
bhavet surāṇām api saṃśayaḥ mahān
22. hi saḥ rākṣasendraḥ samāptakarmā samare surāsuraiḥ adṛśyaḥ bhavati.
tena samāptakarmaṇā yuyutsatā surāṇām api mahān saṃśayaḥ bhavet.
22. Indeed, when his actions (karma) are complete, that king of the rākṣasas becomes invisible in battle to gods and asuras. If one were to desire to fight with him, who has completed such actions (karma), even the gods would face great uncertainty.
