तमप्रतिमतेजोभ्यां भ्रातृभ्यां रोमहर्षणम् ।
विस्मिताः संगमं प्रेक्ष्य समवेता महर्षयः ॥१॥

1. The assembled great sages, astonished, observed the thrilling meeting of him with his two brothers, who both possessed incomparable splendor.
अन्तर्हितास्त्व् ऋषिगणाः सिद्धाश्च परमर्षयः ।
तौ भ्रातरौ महात्मानौ काकुत्स्थौ प्रशशंसिरे ॥२॥
2. antarhitāstv ṛṣigaṇāḥ siddhāśca paramarṣayaḥ ,
tau bhrātarau mahātmānau kākutsthau praśaśaṃsire.

2. Indeed, the groups of sages, Siddhas, and supreme sages, who had remained invisible, praised those two great-souled brothers, the Kakutsthas.
स धन्यो यस्य पुत्रौ द्वौ धर्मज्ञौ धर्मविक्रमौ ।
श्रुत्वा वयं हि संभाषामुभयोः स्पृहयामहे ॥३॥
3. sa dhanyo yasya putrau dvau dharmajñau dharmavikramau ,
śrutvā vayaṃ hi saṃbhāṣāmubhayoḥ spṛhayāmahe.
3. saḥ dhanyaḥ yasya putrau dvau dharmajñau dharmavikramau
śrutvā vayam hi saṃbhāṣām ubhayoḥ spṛhayāmahe
3. saḥ dhanyaḥ yasya dvau putrau dharmajñau dharmavikramau (bhavataḥ).
vayam hi ubhayoḥ saṃbhāṣām śrutvā spṛhayāmahe.
3. He is truly blessed whose two sons are both knowledgeable of natural law (dharma) and valiant in upholding natural law (dharma). Indeed, having heard the conversation of those two, we ourselves feel a longing for such virtues.
ततस्त्व् ऋषिगणाः क्षिप्रं दशग्रीववधैषिणः ।
भरतं राजशार्दूलमित्यूचुः संगता वचः ॥४॥
4. tatastv ṛṣigaṇāḥ kṣipraṃ daśagrīvavadhaiṣiṇaḥ ,
bharataṃ rājaśārdūlamityūcuḥ saṃgatā vacaḥ.
4. tataḥ tu ṛṣigaṇāḥ kṣipram daśagrīvavadhaiṣiṇaḥ
bharatam rājaśārdūlam iti ūcuḥ saṅgatāḥ vacaḥ
4. tataḥ tu saṅgatāḥ daśagrīvavadhaiṣiṇaḥ ṛṣigaṇāḥ
kṣipram rājaśārdūlam bharatam iti vacaḥ ūcuḥ
4. Then, the assembled groups of sages, desiring the slaying of Daśagrīva, quickly spoke these words to Bharata, that tiger among kings.
कुले जात महाप्राज्ञ महावृत्त महायशः ।
ग्राह्यं रामस्य वाक्यं ते पितरं यद्यवेक्षसे ॥५॥
5. kule jāta mahāprājña mahāvṛtta mahāyaśaḥ ,
grāhyaṃ rāmasya vākyaṃ te pitaraṃ yadyavekṣase.
5. kule jāta mahāprājña mahāvṛtta mahāyaśaḥ
grāhyam rāmasya vākyam te pitaram yadi avekṣase
5. mahāprājña mahāvṛtta mahāyaśaḥ kule jāta,
yadi pitaram avekṣase,
te rāmasya vākyam grāhyam.
5. O greatly wise one, born into a noble family, possessing excellent character and great renown, if you wish to honor your father, you should accept Rama's word.
सदानृणमिमं रामं वयमिच्छामहे पितुः ।
अनृणत्वाच्च कैकेय्याः स्वर्गं दशरथो गतः ॥६॥
6. sadānṛṇamimaṃ rāmaṃ vayamicchāmahe pituḥ ,
anṛṇatvācca kaikeyyāḥ svargaṃ daśaratho gataḥ.
6. sadā anṛṇam imam rāmam vayam icchāmahe pituḥ
anṛṇatvāt ca kaikeyyāḥ svargam daśarathaḥ gataḥ
6. vayam imam rāmam pituḥ sadā anṛṇam icchāmahe.
ca kaikeyyāḥ anṛṇatvāt daśarathaḥ svargam gataḥ.
6. We wish that Rama always remains free from his father's debt. And because of being freed from his debt (regarding Kaikeyi's boons), Dasharatha has gone to heaven.
एतावदुक्त्वा वचनं गन्धर्वाः समहर्षयः ।
राजर्षयश्चैव तथा सर्वे स्वां स्वां गतिं गताः ॥७॥
7. etāvaduktvā vacanaṃ gandharvāḥ samaharṣayaḥ ,
rājarṣayaścaiva tathā sarve svāṃ svāṃ gatiṃ gatāḥ.
7. etāvat uktvā vacanam gandharvāḥ sa maharṣayaḥ
rājarṣayaḥ ca eva tathā sarve svām svām gatim gatāḥ
7. gandharvāḥ sa-maharṣayaḥ ca eva tathā rājarṣayaḥ sarve etāvat vacanam uktvā svām svām gatim gatāḥ.
7. Having spoken these words, the Gandharvas, along with the great sages and the royal sages, all returned to their respective abodes.
ह्लादितस्तेन वाक्येन शुभेन शुभदर्शनः ।
रामः संहृष्टवदनस्तानृषीनभ्यपूजयत् ॥८॥
8. hlāditastena vākyena śubhena śubhadarśanaḥ ,
rāmaḥ saṃhṛṣṭavadanastānṛṣīnabhyapūjayat.
8. hlāditaḥ tena vākyena śubhena śubhadarśanaḥ
rāmaḥ saṃhṛṣṭavadanaḥ tān ṛṣīn abhyapūjayat
8. śubhadarśanaḥ saṃhṛṣṭavadanaḥ rāmaḥ tena śubhena vākyena hlāditaḥ,
tān ṛṣīn abhyapūjayat.
8. Delighted by those auspicious words, Rama, who was of auspicious appearance and had a joyful face, honored those sages.
स्रस्तगात्रस्तु भरतः स वाचा सज्जमानया ।
कृताञ्जलिरिदं वाक्यं राघवं पुनरब्रवीत् ॥९॥
9. srastagātrastu bharataḥ sa vācā sajjamānayā ,
kṛtāñjaliridaṃ vākyaṃ rāghavaṃ punarabravīt.
9. srastagātraḥ tu bharataḥ saḥ vācā sajjamānayā
kṛtāñjaliḥ idam vākyam rāghavam punaḥ abravīt
9. bharataḥ sragtagātraḥ tu saḥ sajjamānayā vācā
kṛtāñjaliḥ punaḥ idam vākyam rāghavam abravīt
9. With his limbs slackened, Bharata, with a faltering voice, and with hands joined in supplication, again spoke these words to Rama (Rāghava).
राजधर्ममनुप्रेक्ष्य कुलधर्मानुसंततिम् ।
कर्तुमर्हसि काकुत्स्थ मम मातुश्च याचनाम् ॥१०॥
10. rājadharmamanuprekṣya kuladharmānusaṃtatim ,
kartumarhasi kākutstha mama mātuśca yācanām.
10. rājadharmam anuprekṣya kuladharmānusaṃtatim
kartum arhasi kākutstha mama mātuḥ ca yācanām
10. kākutstha rājadharmam kuladharmānusaṃtatim ca
anuprekṣya mama mātuḥ yācanām kartum arhasi
10. O Kakutstha, having considered the duty of a king (rājadharma) and the continuous tradition of family duty (kuladharma), you ought to fulfill the request of both me and my mother.
रक्षितुं सुमहद् राज्यमहमेकस्तु नोत्सहे ।
पौरजानपदांश्चापि रक्तान् रञ्जयितुं तथा ॥११॥
11. rakṣituṃ sumahad rājyamahamekastu notsahe ,
paurajānapadāṃścāpi raktān rañjayituṃ tathā.
11. rakṣitum sumahat rājyam aham ekaḥ tu na utsahe
paurajānapadān ca api raktān rañjayitum tathā
11. aham ekaḥ tu sumahat rājyam rakṣitum na utsahe
tathā raktān paurajānapadān ca api rañjayitum
11. I alone am certainly not able to protect this very great kingdom, nor am I able to please the urban and rural populace, even those who are devoted (to me).
ज्ञातयश्च हि योधाश्च मित्राणि सुहृदश्च नः ।
त्वामेव प्रतिकाङ्क्षन्ते पर्जन्यमिव कर्षकाः ॥१२॥
12. jñātayaśca hi yodhāśca mitrāṇi suhṛdaśca naḥ ,
tvāmeva pratikāṅkṣante parjanyamiva karṣakāḥ.
12. jñātayaḥ ca hi yodhāḥ ca mitrāṇi suhṛdaḥ ca naḥ
tvām eva pratikāṅkṣante parjanyam iva karṣakāḥ
12. hi naḥ jñātayaḥ ca yodhāḥ ca mitrāṇi ca suhṛdaḥ
tvām eva pratikāṅkṣante karṣakāḥ parjanyam iva
12. Indeed, our relatives, warriors, friends, and well-wishers - all of them eagerly await you, just as farmers long for rain (parjanya).
इदं राज्यं महाप्राज्ञ स्थापय प्रतिपद्य हि ।
शक्तिमानसि काकुत्स्थ लोकस्य परिपालने ॥१३॥
13. idaṃ rājyaṃ mahāprājña sthāpaya pratipadya hi ,
śaktimānasi kākutstha lokasya paripālane.
13. idam rājyam mahāprājña sthāpaya pratipadya
hi śaktimān asi kākutstha lokasya paripālane
13. mahāprājña kākutstha idam rājyam pratipadya
hi sthāpaya lokasya paripālane śaktimān asi
13. O greatly wise one, indeed accept this kingdom and establish it. O Kakutstha, you are capable of protecting the world.
इत्युक्त्वा न्यपतद्भ्रातुः पादयोर्भरतस्तदा ।
भृशं संप्रार्थयामास राममेवं प्रियं वदः ॥१४॥
14. ityuktvā nyapatadbhrātuḥ pādayorbharatastadā ,
bhṛśaṃ saṃprārthayāmāsa rāmamevaṃ priyaṃ vadaḥ.
14. iti uktvā nyapatat bhrātuḥ pādayoḥ bharataḥ tadā
bhṛśam samprārthayāmāsa rāmam evam priyamvadaḥ
14. iti uktvā tadā priyamvadaḥ bharataḥ bhrātuḥ
pādayoḥ nyapatat evam rāmam bhṛśam samprārthayāmāsa
14. Having spoken thus, Bharata then fell at his brother's feet. The sweet-spoken one (Bharata) vehemently implored Rama in this way.
तमङ्के भ्रातरं कृत्वा रामो वचनमब्रवीत् ।
श्यामं नलिनपत्राक्षं मत्तहंसस्वरः स्वयम् ॥१५॥
15. tamaṅke bhrātaraṃ kṛtvā rāmo vacanamabravīt ,
śyāmaṃ nalinapatrākṣaṃ mattahaṃsasvaraḥ svayam.
15. tam aṅke bhrātaram kṛtvā rāmaḥ vacanam abravīt
śyāmam nalinapatrākṣam mattahaṃsasvaraḥ svayam
15. rāmaḥ svayam mattahaṃsasvaraḥ tam śyāmam
nalinapatrākṣam bhrātaram aṅke kṛtvā vacanam abravīt
15. Having placed his dark-complexioned, lotus-leaf-eyed brother on his lap, Rama himself, whose voice resembled that of an intoxicated swan, spoke these words.
आगता त्वामियं बुद्धिः स्वजा वैनयिकी च या ।
भृशमुत्सहसे तात रक्षितुं पृथिवीमपि ॥१६॥
16. āgatā tvāmiyaṃ buddhiḥ svajā vainayikī ca yā ,
bhṛśamutsahase tāta rakṣituṃ pṛthivīmapi.
16. āgatā tvām iyam buddhiḥ svajā vainayikī ca yā
bhṛśam utsahase tāta rakṣitum pṛthivīm api
16. tāta iyam yā svajā ca vainayikī buddhiḥ tvām
āgatā pṛthivīm api rakṣitum bhṛśam utsahase
16. O dear one, this understanding has come to you, which is both inherent and born of proper conduct. You are indeed very capable of protecting the earth.
अमात्यैश्च सुहृद्भिश्च बुद्धिमद्भिश्च मन्त्रिभिः ।
सर्वकार्याणि संमन्त्र्य सुमहान्त्यपि कारय ॥१७॥
17. amātyaiśca suhṛdbhiśca buddhimadbhiśca mantribhiḥ ,
sarvakāryāṇi saṃmantrya sumahāntyapi kāraya.
17. amātyaiḥ ca suhṛdbhiḥ ca buddhimadbhiḥ ca mantribhiḥ
sarvakāryāṇi saṃmantrya sumahānti api kāraya
17. Always consult thoroughly with your ministers, friends, intelligent persons, and counselors regarding all affairs, and then ensure that even very important tasks are carried out.
लक्ष्मीश्चन्द्रादपेयाद्वा हिमवान् वा हिमं त्यजेत् ।
अतीयात् सागरो वेलां न प्रतिज्ञामहं पितुः ॥१८॥
18. lakṣmīścandrādapeyādvā himavān vā himaṃ tyajet ,
atīyāt sāgaro velāṃ na pratijñāmahaṃ pituḥ.
18. lakṣmīḥ candrāt apeyāt vā himavān vā himaṃ tyajet
atīyāt sāgaraḥ velāṃ na pratijñām ahaṃ pituḥ
18. Fortune (lakṣmī) might depart from the moon, or the Himalayas might abandon their snow, or the ocean might transgress its boundaries; yet I will not abandon my father's solemn promise.
कामाद्वा तात लोभाद्वा मात्रा तुभ्यमिदं कृतम् ।
न तन्मनसि कर्तव्यं वर्तितव्यं च मातृवत् ॥१९॥
19. kāmādvā tāta lobhādvā mātrā tubhyamidaṃ kṛtam ,
na tanmanasi kartavyaṃ vartitavyaṃ ca mātṛvat.
19. kāmāt vā tāta lobhāt vā mātrā tubhyaṃ idaṃ kṛtam
na tat manasi kartavyaṃ vartitavyaṃ ca mātṛvat
19. My dear, your mother did this, either out of desire or out of greed. You should not take that to heart, and you must always treat her as a mother.
एवं ब्रुवाणं भरतः कौसल्यासुतमब्रवीत् ।
तेजसादित्यसंकाशं प्रतिपच्चन्द्रदर्शनम् ॥२०॥
20. evaṃ bruvāṇaṃ bharataḥ kausalyāsutamabravīt ,
tejasādityasaṃkāśaṃ pratipaccandradarśanam.
20. evaṃ bruvāṇaṃ bharataḥ kausalyāsutam abravīt
tejasā ādityasaṃkāśaṃ pratipatcandradarśanam
20. Bharata then spoke to Kaushalya's son, who was speaking in this manner, and who was radiant like the sun in his glory and whose appearance was as captivating as the crescent moon on the first day of its waxing.
अधिरोहार्य पादाभ्यां पादुके हेमभूषिते ।
एते हि सर्वलोकस्य योगक्षेमं विधास्यतः ॥२१॥
21. adhirohārya pādābhyāṃ pāduke hemabhūṣite ,
ete hi sarvalokasya yogakṣemaṃ vidhāsyataḥ.
21. adhiroha ārya pādābhyām pāduke hemabhūṣite
ete hi sarvalokasya yogakṣemam vidhāsyataḥ
21. ārya pādābhyām hemabhūṣite pāduke adhiroha
hi ete sarvalokasya yogakṣemam vidhāsyataḥ
21. O noble one, place your feet upon these gold-adorned sandals. For these two will ensure the prosperity and welfare (yogakṣema) of all people.
सो ऽधिरुह्य नरव्याघ्रः पादुके ह्यवरुह्य च ।
प्रायच्छत् सुमहातेजा भरताय महात्मने ॥२२॥
22. so'dhiruhya naravyāghraḥ pāduke hyavaruhya ca ,
prāyacchat sumahātejā bharatāya mahātmane.
22. saḥ adhiruhya naravyāghraḥ pāduke hi avaruhya
ca prāyacchat sumahātejāḥ bharatāya mahātmane
22. saḥ naravyāghraḥ sumahātejāḥ pāduke adhiruhya
ca hi avaruhya mahātmane bharatāya prāyacchat
22. Having placed his feet upon the sandals, and then having taken them off, that tiger among men (naravyāghraḥ), of immensely great splendor, gave them to the great-souled (mahātmane) Bharata.
स पादुके ते भरतः प्रतापवान् स्वलंकृते संपरिगृह्य धर्मवित् ।
प्रदक्षिणं चैव चकार राघवं चकार चैवोत्तमनागमूर्धनि ॥२३॥
23. sa pāduke te bharataḥ pratāpavān svalaṃkṛte saṃparigṛhya dharmavit ,
pradakṣiṇaṃ caiva cakāra rāghavaṃ cakāra caivottamanāgamūrdhani.
23. saḥ pāduke te bharataḥ pratāpavān
svālaṅkṛte saṃparigṛhya dharmavit
pradakṣiṇam ca eva cakāra rāghavam
cakāra ca eva uttamanaagamūrdhani
23. saḥ pratāpavān dharmavit bharataḥ
te svālaṅkṛte pāduke saṃparigṛhya
rāghavam pradakṣiṇam ca eva cakāra
ca eva uttamanaagamūrdhani cakāra
23. That powerful (pratāpavān) Bharata, knowing the natural law (dharma), having respectfully taken those two beautifully adorned sandals, circumambulated Rāghava, and then placed them on his own head (as a mark of supreme reverence).
अथानुपूर्व्यात् प्रतिपूज्य तं जनं गुरूंश्च मन्त्रिप्रकृतीस्तथानुजौ ।
व्यसर्जयद् राघववंशवर्धनः स्थितः स्वधर्मे हिमवानिवाचलः ॥२४॥
24. athānupūrvyāt pratipūjya taṃ janaṃ gurūṃśca mantriprakṛtīstathānujau ,
vyasarjayad rāghavavaṃśavardhanaḥ sthitaḥ svadharme himavānivācalaḥ.
24. atha anupūrvyāt pratipūjya tam janam
gurūn ca mantriprakṛtīḥ tathā anujau
vyasarjayat rāghavavaṃśavardhanaḥ
sthitaḥ svadharme himavān iva acalaḥ
24. atha rāghavavaṃśavardhanaḥ svadharme
sthitaḥ himavān iva acalaḥ anupūrvyāt
tam janam ca gurūn ca mantriprakṛtīḥ
tathā anujau pratipūjya vyasarjayat
24. Then, in due order, having honored those people, the spiritual teachers (gurū), the ministers and their associates (prakṛti), and his two younger brothers, Rāma, the enhancer of the Raghu lineage, dismissed them. He stood firm in his own intrinsic nature (svadharma), unmoving like the Himālaya mountain (himavān).
तं मातरो बाष्पगृहीतकण्ठो दुःखेन नामन्त्रयितुं हि शेकुः ।
स त्वेव मातॄरभिवाद्य सर्वा रुदन् कुटीं स्वां प्रविवेश रामः ॥२५॥
25. taṃ mātaro bāṣpagṛhītakaṇṭho duḥkhena nāmantrayituṃ hi śekuḥ ,
sa tveva mātṝrabhivādya sarvā rudan kuṭīṃ svāṃ praviveśa rāmaḥ.
25. tam mātaraḥ bāṣpagṛhītakaṇṭhāḥ
duḥkhena na āmantrayitum hi śekuḥ
saḥ tu eva mātṝḥ abhivādya sarvāḥ
rudan kuṭīm svām praviveśa rāmaḥ
25. mātaraḥ bāṣpagṛhītakaṇṭhāḥ duḥkhena
tam hi na śekuḥ āmantrayitum
saḥ rāmaḥ tu eva sarvāḥ mātṝḥ
abhivādya rudan svām kuṭīm praviveśa
25. His mothers, their throats choked with tears, were indeed unable to address him due to their sorrow. But Rāma himself, weeping, greeted all his mothers and then entered his own hut.
