ततः शूर्पणखां क्रुद्धां ब्रुवतीं परुषं वचः ।
अमात्यमध्ये संक्रुद्धः परिपप्रच्छ रावणः ॥१॥

1. Then, Ravana, enraged, and in the midst of his ministers, questioned Shurpanakha, who was angry and speaking harsh words.
कश्च रामः कथं वीर्यः किं रूपः किं पराक्रमः ।
किमर्थं दण्डकारण्यं प्रविष्टश्च सुदुश्चरम् ॥२॥
2. kaśca rāmaḥ kathaṃ vīryaḥ kiṃ rūpaḥ kiṃ parākramaḥ ,
kimarthaṃ daṇḍakāraṇyaṃ praviṣṭaśca suduścaram.

2. Who is this Rama? What is his valor (vīrya)? What is his appearance? What is his might? And for what purpose has he entered the exceedingly difficult-to-traverse Daṇḍaka forest?
आयुधं किं च रामस्य निहता येन राक्षसाः ।
खरश्च निहतं संख्ये दूषणस्त्रिशिरास्तथा ॥३॥
3. āyudhaṃ kiṃ ca rāmasya nihatā yena rākṣasāḥ ,
kharaśca nihataṃ saṃkhye dūṣaṇastriśirāstathā.
3. āyudham kim ca rāmasya nihitāḥ yena rākṣasāḥ
kharaḥ ca nihitam saṃkhye dūṣaṇaḥ triśirāḥ tathā
3. ca rāmasya kim āyudham yena rākṣasāḥ nihitāḥ ca

3. And what is Rama's weapon by which the Rākṣasas were slain? And by which Khara, Dūṣaṇa, and Triśiras were likewise killed in battle?
इत्युक्ता राक्षसेन्द्रेण राक्षसी क्रोधमूर्छिता ।
ततो रामं यथान्यायमाख्यातुमुपचक्रमे ॥४॥
4. ityuktā rākṣasendreṇa rākṣasī krodhamūrchitā ,
tato rāmaṃ yathānyāyamākhyātumupacakrame.
4. iti uktā rākṣasendrena rākṣasī krodhamūrchitā
tataḥ rāmam yathānyāyam ākhyātum upacakrame

4. Thus addressed by the lord of Rākṣasas, the Rākṣasī, overcome with rage, then began to narrate (the story of) Rama as was appropriate.
दीर्घबाहुर्विशालाक्षश्चीरकृष्णाजिनाम्बरः ।
कन्दर्पसमरूपश्च रामो दशरथात्मजः ॥५॥
5. dīrghabāhurviśālākṣaścīrakṛṣṇājināmbaraḥ ,
kandarpasamarūpaśca rāmo daśarathātmajaḥ.
5. dīrghabāhuḥ viśālākṣaḥ cīrakṛṣṇājināmbaraḥ
kandarpasamarūpaḥ ca rāmaḥ daśarathātmajaḥ

5. Rama, the son of Daśaratha, is long-armed, large-eyed, clothed in bark garments and a black deer skin, and possesses a form equal to that of Kamadeva.
शक्रचापनिभं चापं विकृष्य कनकाङ्गदम् ।
दीप्तान् क्षिपति नाराचान् सर्पानिव महाविषान् ॥६॥
6. śakracāpanibhaṃ cāpaṃ vikṛṣya kanakāṅgadam ,
dīptān kṣipati nārācān sarpāniva mahāviṣān.

dīptān kṣipati nārācān sarpān iva mahāviṣān
6. saḥ śakracāpanibham kanakāṅgadam cāpam vikṛṣya,
mahāviṣān sarpān iva,

6. Drawing his bow, which resembled Indra's bow and was adorned with gold, he shoots blazing iron arrows that are like highly venomous snakes.
नाददानं शरान् घोरान्न मुञ्चन्तं महाबलम् ।
न कार्मुकं विकर्षन्तं रामं पश्यामि संयुगे ॥७॥
7. nādadānaṃ śarān ghorānna muñcantaṃ mahābalam ,
na kārmukaṃ vikarṣantaṃ rāmaṃ paśyāmi saṃyuge.
7. na ādadānam śarān ghorān na muñcantam mahābalam
na kārmukam vikarṣantam rāmam paśyāmi saṃyuge
7. saṃyuge,
ghorān śarān na ādadānam,
na muñcantam,
na kārmukam vikarṣantam mahābalam rāmam [aham] paśyāmi.
7. In battle, I do not perceive the mighty Rāma taking dreadful arrows, nor releasing them, nor even drawing his bow. So swift are his actions.
हन्यमानं तु तत् सैन्यं पश्यामि शरवृष्टिभिः ।
इन्द्रेणैवोत्तमं सस्यमाहतं त्वश्मवृष्टिभिः ॥८॥
8. hanyamānaṃ tu tat sainyaṃ paśyāmi śaravṛṣṭibhiḥ ,
indreṇaivottamaṃ sasyamāhataṃ tvaśmavṛṣṭibhiḥ.
8. hanyamānam tu tat sainyam paśyāmi śaravṛṣṭibhiḥ
indreṇa eva uttamam sasyam āhatam tu aśmavṛṣṭibhiḥ
8. aham tu tat sainyam śaravṛṣṭibhiḥ hanyamānam paśyāmi,
indreṇa aśmavṛṣṭibhiḥ uttamam sasyam āhatam iva.
8. I see that army being struck down by showers of arrows, indeed, just as an excellent crop is destroyed by Indra with hailstorms (aśmavṛṣṭi).
रक्षसां भीमवीर्याणां सहस्राणि चतुर्दश ।
निहतानि शरैस्तीक्ष्णैस्तेनैकेन पदातिना ॥९॥
9. rakṣasāṃ bhīmavīryāṇāṃ sahasrāṇi caturdaśa ,
nihatāni śaraistīkṣṇaistenaikena padātinā.
9. rakṣasām bhīmavīryāṇām sahasrāṇi caturdaśa
nihatāni śaraiḥ tīkṣṇaiḥ tena ekena padātinā
9. bhīmavīryāṇām rakṣasām caturdaśa sahasrāṇi,
tīkṣṇaiḥ śaraiḥ,
tena ekena padātinā nihatāni.
9. Fourteen thousand Rākṣasas of terrible prowess were slain by that single foot-soldier with sharp arrows.
अर्धाधिकमुहूर्तेन खरश्च सहदूषणः ।
ऋषीणामभयं दत्तं कृतक्षेमाश्च दण्डकाः ॥१०॥
10. ardhādhikamuhūrtena kharaśca sahadūṣaṇaḥ ,
ṛṣīṇāmabhayaṃ dattaṃ kṛtakṣemāśca daṇḍakāḥ.
10. ardhādhikamuhoūrtena kharaḥ ca sahadūṣaṇaḥ
ṛṣīṇām abhayam dattam kṛtakṣemāḥ ca daṇḍakāḥ
10. kharaḥ ca sahadūṣaṇaḥ ardhādhikamuhoūrtena
ṛṣīṇām abhayam dattam ca daṇḍakāḥ kṛtakṣemāḥ
10. Within a little more than half a muhūrta, Khara, along with Dūṣaṇa, was defeated. Fearlessness was granted to the sages, and the Daṇḍaka forest was rendered safe.
एका कथं चिन्मुक्ताहं परिभूय महात्मना ।
स्त्रीवधं शङ्कमानेन रामेण विदितात्मना ॥११॥
11. ekā kathaṃ cinmuktāhaṃ paribhūya mahātmanā ,
strīvadhaṃ śaṅkamānena rāmeṇa viditātmanā.
11. ekā kathaṃcit muktā aham paribhūya mahātmanā
strīvadham śaṅkamānena rāmeṇa viditātmanā
11. ekā aham paribhūya kathaṃcit muktā strīvadham
śaṅkamānena viditātmanā mahātmanā rāmeṇa
11. Though I, alone, was overpowered, I was somehow released by the great-souled (mahātman) Rāma, who feared the killing of a woman and possessed knowledge of the self (ātman).
भ्राता चास्य महातेजा गुणतस्तुल्यविक्रमः ।
अनुरक्तश्च भक्तश्च लक्ष्मणो नाम वीर्यवान् ॥१२॥
12. bhrātā cāsya mahātejā guṇatastulyavikramaḥ ,
anuraktaśca bhaktaśca lakṣmaṇo nāma vīryavān.
12. bhrātā ca asya mahātejāḥ guṇataḥ tulyavikramaḥ
anuraktaḥ ca bhaktaḥ ca lakṣmaṇaḥ nāma vīryavān
12. ca asya bhrātā lakṣmaṇaḥ nāma mahātejāḥ guṇataḥ
tulyavikramaḥ ca anuraktaḥ ca bhaktaḥ vīryavān
12. And his brother, named Lakṣmaṇa, is greatly energetic, equal in valor in terms of qualities, and is both attached and devoted (bhakta), and also powerful.
अमर्षी दुर्जयो जेता विक्रान्तो बुद्धिमान्बली ।
रामस्य दक्षिणे बाहुर्नित्यं प्राणो बहिष्चरः ॥१३॥
13. amarṣī durjayo jetā vikrānto buddhimānbalī ,
rāmasya dakṣiṇe bāhurnityaṃ prāṇo bahiṣcaraḥ.
13. amarṣī durjayaḥ jetā vikrāntaḥ buddhimān balī
rāmasya dakṣiṇe bāhuḥ nityam prāṇaḥ bahiṣcaraḥ
13. amarṣī durjayaḥ jetā vikrāntaḥ buddhimān balī
rāmasya dakṣiṇe bāhuḥ nityam bahiṣcaraḥ prāṇaḥ
13. He is intolerant, unconquerable, a victor, valiant, intelligent, and strong; he is Rāma's right arm, his constantly (nityam) externalized life-breath (prāṇa).
रामस्य तु विशालाक्षी धर्मपत्नी यशस्विनी ।
सीता नाम वरारोहा वैदेही तनुमध्यमा ॥१४॥
14. rāmasya tu viśālākṣī dharmapatnī yaśasvinī ,
sītā nāma varārohā vaidehī tanumadhyamā.

sītā nāma varārohā vaidehī tanumadhyamā

14. Rama's glorious and lawful wife (dharmapatnī) is named Sita, who possesses large eyes, beautiful hips, and a slender waist, and is the princess of Videha.
नैव देवी न गन्धर्वा न यक्षी न च किंनरी ।
तथारूपा मया नारी दृष्टपूर्वा महीतले ॥१५॥
15. naiva devī na gandharvā na yakṣī na ca kiṃnarī ,
tathārūpā mayā nārī dṛṣṭapūrvā mahītale.
15. na eva devī na gandharvā na yakṣī na ca
kiṃnarī tathārūpā mayā nārī dṛṣṭapūrvā mahītale
15. tathārūpā nārī mayā na eva devī na gandharvā
na yakṣī na ca kiṃnarī dṛṣṭapūrvā mahītale
15. A woman of such exquisite form has never been seen by me on the surface of the earth, neither a goddess, nor a Gandharva woman, nor a Yakṣī, nor a Kinnarī.
यस्य सीता भवेद्भार्या यं च हृष्टा परिष्वजेत् ।
अतिजीवेत् स सर्वेषु लोकेष्वपि पुरंदरात् ॥१६॥
16. yasya sītā bhavedbhāryā yaṃ ca hṛṣṭā pariṣvajet ,
atijīvet sa sarveṣu lokeṣvapi puraṃdarāt.
16. yasya sītā bhavet bhāryā yam ca hṛṣṭā pariṣvajet
atijīvet sa sarveṣu lokeṣu api purandarāt
16. yasya sītā bhāryā bhavet ca yam hṛṣṭā pariṣvajet,
sa sarveṣu lokeṣu api purandarāt atijīvet
16. That man whose wife Sita would be, and whom she would joyfully embrace, would truly outlive all, even Indra, throughout all the worlds.
सा सुशीला वपुःश्लाघ्या रूपेणाप्रतिमा भुवि ।
तवानुरूपा भार्या सा त्वं च तस्यास्तथा पतिः ॥१७॥
17. sā suśīlā vapuḥślāghyā rūpeṇāpratimā bhuvi ,
tavānurūpā bhāryā sā tvaṃ ca tasyāstathā patiḥ.
17. sā suśīlā vapuḥślāghyā rūpeṇa apratimā bhuvi tava
anurūpā bhāryā sā tvam ca tasyāḥ tathā patiḥ
17. sā suśīlā vapuḥślāghyā rūpeṇa apratimā bhuvi,
sā tava anurūpā bhāryā ca tvam tathā tasyāḥ patiḥ
17. She is virtuous, praised for her physique, and peerless in beauty on earth. She is a wife perfectly suited to you, and you are likewise a fitting husband for her.
तां तु विस्तीर्णजघनां पीनोत्तुङ्गपयोधराम् ।
भार्यार्थे तु तवानेतुमुद्यताहं वराननाम् ॥१८॥
18. tāṃ tu vistīrṇajaghanāṃ pīnottuṅgapayodharām ,
bhāryārthe tu tavānetumudyatāhaṃ varānanām.
18. tām tu vistīrṇajaghanām pīnottaṅgapayodharām
bhāryārthe tu tava ānetum udyatā aham varānanām
18. aham tu tava bhāryārthe tām vistīrṇajaghanām
pīnottuṅgapayodharām varānanām ānetum udyatā
18. I am ready to bring you that beautiful-faced woman, who has broad hips and plump, high breasts, for the purpose of being your wife.
तां तु दृष्ट्वाद्य वैदेहीं पूर्णचन्द्रनिभाननाम् ।
मन्मथस्य शराणां च त्वं विधेयो भविष्यसि ॥१९॥
19. tāṃ tu dṛṣṭvādya vaidehīṃ pūrṇacandranibhānanām ,
manmathasya śarāṇāṃ ca tvaṃ vidheyo bhaviṣyasi.
19. tām tu dṛṣṭvā adya vaidehīm pūrṇacandranibhānanām
manmathasya śarāṇām ca tvam vidheyaḥ bhaviṣyasi
19. adya tvam tām pūrṇacandranibhānanām vaidehīm
dṛṣṭvā manmathasya śarāṇām ca vidheyaḥ bhaviṣyasi
19. Indeed, upon seeing Vaidehī (Sītā) today, with a face like the full moon, you will become subject to the arrows of Manmatha (the god of love).
यदि तस्यामभिप्रायो भार्यार्थे तव जायते ।
शीघ्रमुद्ध्रियतां पादो जयार्थमिह दक्षिणः ॥२०॥
20. yadi tasyāmabhiprāyo bhāryārthe tava jāyate ,
śīghramuddhriyatāṃ pādo jayārthamiha dakṣiṇaḥ.
20. yadi tasyām abhiprāyaḥ bhāryārthe tava jāyate
śīghram uddhriyatām pādaḥ jaya artham iha dakṣiṇaḥ
20. yadi tava bhāryārthe tasyām abhiprāyaḥ jāyate
śīghram iha jaya artham dakṣiṇaḥ pādaḥ uddhriyatām
20. If you develop a desire for her, for the purpose of making her your wife, then quickly, let your right foot be raised here for victory.
कुरु प्रियं तथा तेषां रक्षसां राक्षसेश्वर ।
वधात्तस्य नृशंसस्य रामस्याश्रमवासिनः ॥२१॥
21. kuru priyaṃ tathā teṣāṃ rakṣasāṃ rākṣaseśvara ,
vadhāttasya nṛśaṃsasya rāmasyāśramavāsinaḥ.
21. kuru priyam tathā teṣām rakṣasām rākṣaseśvara
vadhāt tasya nṛśaṃsasya rāmasya āśramavāsinaḥ
21. rākṣaseśvara tathā teṣām rakṣasām priyam kuru
tasya nṛśaṃsasya āśramavāsinaḥ rāmasya vadhāt
21. O lord of the rākṣasas (Rāvaṇa), thus do what is pleasing to those rākṣasas by the killing of that cruel Rāma, who dwells in the hermitage (āśrama).
तं शरैर्निशितैर्हत्वा लक्ष्मणं च महारथम् ।
हतनाथां सुखं सीतां यथावदुपभोक्ष्यसे ॥२२॥
22. taṃ śarairniśitairhatvā lakṣmaṇaṃ ca mahāratham ,
hatanāthāṃ sukhaṃ sītāṃ yathāvadupabhokṣyase.
22. taṃ śaraiḥ niśitaiḥ hatvā lakṣmaṇam ca mahāratham
hatanāthām sukham sītām yathāvat upabhokṣyase
22. taṃ ca mahāratham lakṣmaṇam niśitaiḥ śaraiḥ hatvā,
hatanāthām sītām sukham yathāvat upabhokṣyase
22. Having killed him (Rāma) and Lakṣmaṇa, the great charioteer, with sharp arrows, you will then comfortably and fully enjoy Sītā, whose protector has been slain.
रोचते यदि ते वाक्यं ममैतद् राक्षसेश्वर ।
क्रियतां निर्विशङ्केन वचनं मम राघव ॥२३॥
23. rocate yadi te vākyaṃ mamaitad rākṣaseśvara ,
kriyatāṃ nirviśaṅkena vacanaṃ mama rāghava.
23. rocate yadi te vākyam mama etat rākṣaseśvara
kriyatām nirviśaṅkena vacanam mama rāghava

yadi etat mama vākyam te rocate,
mama vacanam nirviśaṅkena kriyatām,

23. O lord of Rākṣasas, if this counsel of mine pleases you, then let my instruction be carried out without hesitation, O scion of Raghu.
निशम्य रामेण शरैरजिह्मगैर्हताञ्जनस्थानगतान्निशाचरान् ।
खरं च बुद्ध्वा निहतं च दूषणं त्वमद्य कृत्यं प्रतिपत्तुमर्हसि ॥२४॥
24. niśamya rāmeṇa śarairajihmagairhatāñjanasthānagatānniśācarān ,
kharaṃ ca buddhvā nihataṃ ca dūṣaṇaṃ tvamadya kṛtyaṃ pratipattumarhasi.
24. niśamya rāmeṇa śaraiḥ ajihmagaiḥ
hatān janasthānagatān niśācarān kharam
ca buddhvā nihatam ca dūṣaṇam
tvam adya kṛtyam pratipattum arhasi
24. tvam rāmeṇa ajihmagaiḥ śaraiḥ hatān janasthānagatān niśācarān niśamya,
ca kharam ca dūṣaṇam nihatam buddhvā,
adya kṛtyam pratipattum arhasi
24. Having understood that the night-wanderers (Rākṣasas) residing in Janasthāna were killed by Rāma with straight-flying arrows, and having known that Khara and Dūṣaṇa were also slain, you (Rāvaṇa) ought to undertake the necessary action now.
