तयोस्तदा सादितयो रणाग्रे मुमोह सैन्यं हरियूथपानाम् ।
सुग्रीवनीलाङ्गदजाम्बवन्तो न चापि किं चित् प्रतिपेदिरे ते ॥१॥

1. Then, as those two (Rāma and Lakshmana) were struck down at the forefront of the battle, the army of monkey leaders became bewildered. Sugrīva, Nīla, Aṅgada, and Jāmbavān, they too were unable to comprehend anything.
ततो विषण्णं समवेक्ष्य सैन्यं विभीषणो बुद्धिमतां वरिष्ठः ।
उवाच शाखामृगराजवीरानाश्वासयन्नप्रतिमैर्वचोभिः ॥२॥
2. tato viṣaṇṇaṃ samavekṣya sainyaṃ vibhīṣaṇo buddhimatāṃ variṣṭhaḥ ,
uvāca śākhāmṛgarājavīrānāśvāsayannapratimairvacobhiḥ.

vibhīṣaṇaḥ buddhimatām
variṣṭhaḥ uvāca śākhāmṛgarājavīrān

2. Then, seeing the army disheartened, Vibhīṣaṇa, the foremost among the intelligent, spoke, reassuring the heroes, the monkey chiefs, with unparalleled words.
मा भैष्ट नास्त्यत्र विषादकालो यदार्यपुत्राववशौ विषण्णौ ।
स्वयम्भुवो वाक्यमथोद्वहन्तौ यत् सादिताविन्द्रजिदस्त्रजालैः ॥३॥
3. mā bhaiṣṭa nāstyatra viṣādakālo yadāryaputrāvavaśau viṣaṇṇau ,
svayambhuvo vākyamathodvahantau yat sāditāvindrajidastrajālaiḥ.
3. mā bhaiṣṭa na asti atra viṣādakālaḥ
yat āryaputrāv avaśau viṣaṇṇau
svayambhuvaḥ vākyam atha udvahantau
yat sādītau indrajit astrajālaiḥ

3. Do not fear! This is not a time for despair, because those two noble princes (Rāma and Lakshmana), though helpless and disheartened, were struck down by Indrajit's network of weapons in fulfillment of Svayambhū's decree.
तस्मै तु दत्तं परमास्त्रमेतत् स्वयम्भुवा ब्राह्मममोघवेगम् ।
तन्मानयन्तौ यदि राजपुत्रौ निपातितौ को ऽत्र विषादकालः ॥४॥
4. tasmai tu dattaṃ paramāstrametat svayambhuvā brāhmamamoghavegam ,
tanmānayantau yadi rājaputrau nipātitau ko'tra viṣādakālaḥ.

svayambhuvā brāhmam amoghavegam
tat mānayantau yadi rājaputrau

4. Indeed, this supreme weapon (brāhmam astra) of unfailing speed was bestowed upon him by Svayambhu (Brahmā). If these two princes, even while honoring that (weapon), are struck down, what reason is there for grief here?
ब्राह्ममस्त्रं तदा धीमान्मानयित्वा तु मारुतिः ।
विभीषणवचः श्रुत्वा हनूमांस्तमथाब्रवीत् ॥५॥
5. brāhmamastraṃ tadā dhīmānmānayitvā tu mārutiḥ ,
vibhīṣaṇavacaḥ śrutvā hanūmāṃstamathābravīt.
5. brāhmam astram tadā dhīmān mānayitvā tu mārutiḥ
vibhīṣaṇavacaḥ śrutvā hanūmān tam atha abravīt

5. Having heard Vibhishana's words, the wise son of Maruta (Hanumān), who had indeed honored the divine weapon (brāhmam astra), then spoke to him.
एतस्मिन्निहते सैन्ये वानराणां तरस्विनाम् ।
यो यो धारयते प्राणांस्तं तमाश्वासयावहे ॥६॥
6. etasminnihate sainye vānarāṇāṃ tarasvinām ,
yo yo dhārayate prāṇāṃstaṃ tamāśvāsayāvahe.
6. etasmin nihate sainye vānarāṇām tarasvinām
yaḥ yaḥ dhārayate prāṇān tam tam āśvāsayāvahe
6. etasmin tarasvinām vānarāṇām sainye nihate

6. When this army of mighty monkeys has been struck down, whoever among them still retains life, we two shall console them.
ताव् उभौ युगपद्वीरौ हनूमद् राक्षसोत्तमौ ।
उल्काहस्तौ तदा रात्रौ रणशीर्षे विचेरतुः ॥७॥
7. tāv ubhau yugapadvīrau hanūmad rākṣasottamau ,
ulkāhastau tadā rātrau raṇaśīrṣe viceratuḥ.

7. Then, those two heroes, Hanumān and the best of the rakshasas (Vibhīṣaṇa), both simultaneously, with torches in hand, roamed on the battlefield during the night.
छिन्नलाङ्गूलहस्तोरुपादाङ्गुलि शिरो धरैः ।
स्रवद्भिः क्षतजं गात्रैः प्रस्रवद्भिः समन्ततः ॥८॥
8. chinnalāṅgūlahastorupādāṅguli śiro dharaiḥ ,
sravadbhiḥ kṣatajaṃ gātraiḥ prasravadbhiḥ samantataḥ.

8. With their tails, hands, thighs, feet, toes, and heads severed, and their bodies profusely gushing blood from all sides.
पतितैः पर्वताकारैर्वानरैरभिसंकुलाम् ।
शस्त्रैश्च पतितैर्दीप्तैर्ददृशाते वसुंधराम् ॥९॥
9. patitaiḥ parvatākārairvānarairabhisaṃkulām ,
śastraiśca patitairdīptairdadṛśāte vasuṃdharām.
9. patitaiḥ parvatākāraiḥ vānaraiḥ abhisaṅkulām
śastraiḥ ca patitaiḥ dīptaiḥ dadṛśāte vasuṃdharām
9. vasuṃdharām patitaiḥ parvatākāraiḥ vānaraiḥ ca
patitaiḥ dīptaiḥ śastraiḥ abhisaṅkulām dadṛśāte
9. They both saw the earth, crowded with fallen, mountain-like monkeys, and with gleaming, fallen weapons.
सुग्रीवमङ्गदं नीलं शरभं गन्धमादनम् ।
जाम्बवन्तं सुषेणं च वेगदर्शनमाहुकम् ॥१०॥
10. sugrīvamaṅgadaṃ nīlaṃ śarabhaṃ gandhamādanam ,
jāmbavantaṃ suṣeṇaṃ ca vegadarśanamāhukam.
10. sugrīvam aṅgadam nīlam śarabham gandhamādanam
jāmbavantam suṣeṇam ca vegadarśanam āhukam

10. Sugriva, Angada, Nila, Sarabha, Gandhamadana, Jambavan, Sushena, Vegadarshana, and Ahuka -
मैन्दं नलं ज्योतिमुखं द्विविदं पनसं तथा ।
विभीषणो हनूमांश्च ददृशाते हतान् रणे ॥११॥
11. maindaṃ nalaṃ jyotimukhaṃ dvividaṃ panasaṃ tathā ,
vibhīṣaṇo hanūmāṃśca dadṛśāte hatān raṇe.
11. maindam nalam jyotimukham dvividam panasam
tathā vibhīṣaṇaḥ hanūmān ca dadṛśāte hatān raṇe
11. vibhīṣaṇaḥ ca hanūmān maindam nalam jyotimukham
dvividam panasam tathā hatān raṇe dadṛśāte
11. Mainda, Nala, Jyotirmukha, Dvivida, and Panasa. Vibhishana and Hanuman both saw them slain in battle.
सप्तषष्टिर्हताः कोट्यो वानराणां तरस्विनाम् ।
अह्नः पञ्चमशेषेण वल्लभेन स्वयम्भुवः ॥१२॥
12. saptaṣaṣṭirhatāḥ koṭyo vānarāṇāṃ tarasvinām ,
ahnaḥ pañcamaśeṣeṇa vallabhena svayambhuvaḥ.
12. saptaṣaṣṭiḥ hatāḥ koṭyaḥ vānarāṇām tarasvinām
ahnaḥ pañcamaśeṣeṇa vallabhena svayambhuvaḥ
12. saptaṣaṣṭiḥ koṭyaḥ tarasvinām vānarāṇām ahnaḥ
pañcamaśeṣeṇa svayambhuvaḥ vallabhena hatāḥ
12. Sixty-seven crores of mighty monkeys were killed by the beloved of Svayambhu (Brahmā) towards the end of the fifth part of the day.
सागरौघनिभं भीमं दृष्ट्वा बाणार्दितं बलम् ।
मार्गते जाम्बवन्तं स्म हनूमान् सविभीषणः ॥१३॥
13. sāgaraughanibhaṃ bhīmaṃ dṛṣṭvā bāṇārditaṃ balam ,
mārgate jāmbavantaṃ sma hanūmān savibhīṣaṇaḥ.
13. sāgaraughanibham bhīmam dṛṣṭvā bāṇārditam balam
mārgate jāmbavantam sma hanūmān savibhīṣaṇaḥ
13. savibhīṣaṇaḥ hanūmān sāgaraughanibham bhīmam

13. Having seen the formidable army, resembling a vast ocean, distressed by arrows, Hanumān, accompanied by Vibhīṣaṇa, searched for Jambavan.
स्वभावजरया युक्तं वृद्धं शरशतैश्चितम् ।
प्रजापतिसुतं वीरं शाम्यन्तमिव पावकम् ॥१४॥
14. svabhāvajarayā yuktaṃ vṛddhaṃ śaraśataiścitam ,
prajāpatisutaṃ vīraṃ śāmyantamiva pāvakam.
14. svabhāvajarayā yuktam vṛddham śaraśataiḥ citam
prajāpatisutam vīram śāmyantam iva pāvakam
14. svabhāvajarayā yuktam śaraśataiḥ citam vṛddham
prajāpatisutam vīram pāvakam iva śāmyantam
14. (They saw Jambavan) who was aged, afflicted by natural old age, covered with hundreds of arrows, the heroic son of Prajāpati, like a fire subsiding.
दृष्ट्वा तमुपसंगम्य पौलस्त्यो वाक्यमब्रवीत् ।
कच्चिदार्यशरैस्तीर्ष्णैर्न प्राणा ध्वंसितास्तव ॥१५॥
15. dṛṣṭvā tamupasaṃgamya paulastyo vākyamabravīt ,
kaccidāryaśaraistīrṣṇairna prāṇā dhvaṃsitāstava.
15. dṛṣṭvā tam upasaṅgamya paulastyaḥ vākyam abravīt
kaccit āryaśaraiḥ tīkṣṇaiḥ na prāṇāḥ dhvaṃsitāḥ tava
15. tam dṛṣṭvā upasaṅgamya paulastyaḥ vākyam abravīt:
kaccit tava prāṇāḥ tīkṣṇaiḥ āryaśaraiḥ na dhvaṃsitāḥ?
15. Having seen and approached him, Vibhīṣaṇa (the descendant of Pulastya) spoke these words: 'Surely your life (prāṇa) was not destroyed by the sharp arrows of the noble one (Rāma)?'
विभीषणवचः श्रुत्वा जाम्बवानृक्षपुंगवः ।
कृच्छ्रादभ्युद्गिरन् वाक्यमिदं वचनमब्रवीत् ॥१६॥
16. vibhīṣaṇavacaḥ śrutvā jāmbavānṛkṣapuṃgavaḥ ,
kṛcchrādabhyudgiran vākyamidaṃ vacanamabravīt.
16. Vibhīṣaṇavacaḥ śrutvā Jāmbavān ṛkṣapuṅgavaḥ
kṛcchrāt abhyudgiran vākyam idam vacanam abravīt
16. Jāmbavān ṛkṣapuṅgavaḥ Vibhīṣaṇavacaḥ śrutvā
kṛcchrāt abhyudgiran idam vākyam vacanam abravīt
16. Having heard Vibhishana's words, Jambavan, the foremost among the bears, with difficulty uttered this statement.
नैरृतेन्द्रमहावीर्यस्वरेण त्वाभिलक्षये ।
पीड्यमानः शितैर्बाणैर्न त्वां पश्यामि चक्षुषा ॥१७॥
17. nairṛtendramahāvīryasvareṇa tvābhilakṣaye ,
pīḍyamānaḥ śitairbāṇairna tvāṃ paśyāmi cakṣuṣā.
17. Nairṛtendrā mahāvīrya svareṇa tvā abhilakṣaye
pīḍyamānaḥ śitaiḥ bāṇaiḥ na tvām paśyāmi cakṣuṣā
17. Nairṛtendrā mahāvīrya,
svareṇa tvā abhilakṣaye.
śitaiḥ bāṇaiḥ pīḍyamānaḥ (aham) tvām cakṣuṣā na paśyāmi
17. O lord of the rākṣasas (Nairṛtendrā), O great hero, I recognize you by your voice. Being tormented by sharp arrows, I am unable to see you with my eyes.
अञ्जना सुप्रजा येन मातरिश्वा च नैरृत ।
हनूमान् वानरश्रेष्ठः प्राणान्धारयते क्व चित् ॥१८॥
18. añjanā suprajā yena mātariśvā ca nairṛta ,
hanūmān vānaraśreṣṭhaḥ prāṇāndhārayate kva cit.
18. Añjanā supraja yena Mātarisvā ca Nairṛta
Hanūmān vānaraśreṣṭhaḥ prāṇān dhārayate kva cit
18. Nairṛta,
yena Añjanā supraja ca Mātarisvā (pitā asti),
saḥ Hanūmān vānaraśreṣṭhaḥ kvacit prāṇān dhārayate (kim)?
18. O (rākṣasa) Nairṛta, the one by whom Anjana is blessed with a worthy son, and Matarishvan (the wind god) is associated (as father) - does that Hanuman, the foremost among the monkeys, still sustain his life (prāṇa) anywhere?
श्रुत्वा जाम्बवतो वाक्यमुवाचेदं विभीषणः ।
आर्यपुत्रावतिक्रम्य कस्मात् पृच्छसि मारुतिम् ॥१९॥
19. śrutvā jāmbavato vākyamuvācedaṃ vibhīṣaṇaḥ ,
āryaputrāvatikramya kasmāt pṛcchasi mārutim.
19. śrutvā Jāmbavataḥ vākyam uvāca idam Vibhīṣaṇaḥ
āryaputrau atikramya kasmāt pṛcchasi Mārutim
19. Vibhīṣaṇaḥ Jāmbavataḥ vākyam śrutvā idam uvāca,
'āryaputrau atikramya kasmāt Mārutim pṛcchasi?'
19. Having heard Jambavan's statement, Vibhishana replied, 'Why do you inquire about Maruta's son (Māruti), ignoring the two noble princes (Rama and Lakshmana)?'
नैव राजनि सुग्रीवे नाङ्गदे नापि राघवे ।
आर्य संदर्शितः स्नेहो यथा वायुसुते परः ॥२०॥
20. naiva rājani sugrīve nāṅgade nāpi rāghave ,
ārya saṃdarśitaḥ sneho yathā vāyusute paraḥ.
20. na eva rājani sugrīve na aṅgade na api rāghave
ārya sandarśitaḥ snehaḥ yathā vāyusute paraḥ
20. O noble one, such supreme affection has not been shown towards King Sugriva, nor Angada, nor even Rama, as it has been shown towards the son of Vayu (Hanuman).
विभीषणवचः श्रुत्वा जाम्बवान् वाक्यमब्रवीत् ।
शृणु नैरृतशार्दूल यस्मात् पृच्छामि मारुतिम् ॥२१॥
21. vibhīṣaṇavacaḥ śrutvā jāmbavān vākyamabravīt ,
śṛṇu nairṛtaśārdūla yasmāt pṛcchāmi mārutim.
21. vibhīṣaṇavacaḥ śrutvā jāmbavān vākyam abravīt
śṛṇu nairṛtaśārdūla yasmāt pṛcchāmi mārutim
21. Having heard Vibhishana's words, Jambavan spoke, 'Listen, O tiger among the rākṣasas, (the reason) why I am questioning Maruta (Hanuman) is this:'
तस्मिञ्जीवति वीरे तु हतमप्यहतं बलम् ।
हनूमत्युज्झितप्राणे जीवन्तो ऽपि वयं हताः ॥२२॥
22. tasmiñjīvati vīre tu hatamapyahataṃ balam ,
hanūmatyujjhitaprāṇe jīvanto'pi vayaṃ hatāḥ.
22. tasmin jīvati vīre tu hatam api ahatam balam
hanūmati ujjhitaprāṇe jīvantaḥ api vayam hatāḥ
22. Indeed, as long as that hero (Hanuman) remains alive, an army that is defeated is still considered undefeated. But if Hanuman were to lose his life, then even we, though still alive, would be as good as dead.
ध्रियते मारुतिस्तात मारुतप्रतिमो यदि ।
वैश्वानरसमो वीर्ये जीविताशा ततो भवेत् ॥२३॥
23. dhriyate mārutistāta mārutapratimo yadi ,
vaiśvānarasamo vīrye jīvitāśā tato bhavet.
23. dhriyate mārutiḥ tāta mārutapratimaḥ yadi
vaiśvānarasamaḥ vīrye jīvitāśā tataḥ bhavet
23. O dear one, if Hanuman (māruti) is sustained – if he is like the wind god Vayu and equal to fire (vaiśvānara) in valor – then there will be hope for life.
ततो वृद्धमुपागम्य नियमेनाभ्यवादयत् ।
गृह्य जाम्बवतः पादौ हनूमान्मारुतात्मजः ॥२४॥
24. tato vṛddhamupāgamya niyamenābhyavādayat ,
gṛhya jāmbavataḥ pādau hanūmānmārutātmajaḥ.
24. tataḥ vṛddham upāgamya niyamena abhivādayat
gṛhya jāmbavataḥ pādau hanūmān mārutātmajaḥ
24. hanūmān mārutātmajaḥ tataḥ vṛddham upāgamya
jāmbavataḥ pādau gṛhya niyamena abhivādayat
24. Then, Hanumān, the son of Vāyu, approaching the elder (Jāmbavān), formally paid homage by grasping his feet.
श्रुत्वा हनुमतो वाक्यं तथापि व्यथितेन्द्रियः ।
पुनर्जातमिवात्मानं स मेने ऋक्षपुंगवः ॥२५॥
25. śrutvā hanumato vākyaṃ tathāpi vyathitendriyaḥ ,
punarjātamivātmānaṃ sa mene ṛkṣapuṃgavaḥ.
25. śrutvā hanumataḥ vākyam tathā api vyathita indriyaḥ
punaḥ jātam iva ātmānam saḥ mene ṛkṣapuṅgavaḥ
25. saḥ ṛkṣapuṅgavaḥ hanumataḥ vākyam śrutvā tathā
api vyathita indriyaḥ ātmānam punaḥ jātam iva mene
25. Even though his senses were troubled, upon hearing Hanumān's words, that chief of bears (Jāmbavān) considered his own self (ātman) as if reborn.
ततो ऽब्रवीन्महातेजा हनूमन्तं स जाम्बवान् ।
आगच्छ हरिशार्दूलवानरांस्त्रातुमर्हसि ॥२६॥
26. tato'bravīnmahātejā hanūmantaṃ sa jāmbavān ,
āgaccha hariśārdūlavānarāṃstrātumarhasi.
26. tataḥ abravīt mahātejāḥ hanūmantam saḥ jāmbavān
āgaccha hariśārdūla vānarān trātum arhasi
26. tataḥ saḥ jāmbavān mahātejāḥ hanūmantam abravīt
hariśārdūla āgaccha vānarān trātum arhasi
26. Then, the greatly radiant Jāmbavān spoke to Hanumān: "Come, O tiger among monkeys! You are capable of saving these monkeys (vānaras)."
नान्यो विक्रमपर्याप्तस्त्वमेषां परमः सखा ।
त्वत्पराक्रमकालो ऽयं नान्यं पश्यामि कञ्चन ॥२७॥
27. nānyo vikramaparyāptastvameṣāṃ paramaḥ sakhā ,
tvatparākramakālo'yaṃ nānyaṃ paśyāmi kañcana.
27. na anyaḥ vikramaparyāptaḥ tvam eṣām paramaḥ sakhā
tvat parākrama kālaḥ ayam na anyam paśyāmi kañcana
27. eṣām anyaḥ vikramaparyāptaḥ na,
tvam paramaḥ sakhā.
ayam tvat parākrama kālaḥ; anyam kañcana na paśyāmi
27. No one else among these (monkeys) possesses sufficient valor; you are their supreme friend. This is the opportune moment for your extraordinary power; I see no one else (who can accomplish this).
ऋक्षवानरवीराणामनीकानि प्रहर्षय ।
विशल्यौ कुरु चाप्येतौ सादितौ रामलक्ष्मणौ ॥२८॥
28. ṛkṣavānaravīrāṇāmanīkāni praharṣaya ,
viśalyau kuru cāpyetau sāditau rāmalakṣmaṇau.
28. ṛkṣa-vānara-vīrāṇām anīkāni praharṣaya |
viśalyau kuru ca api etau sādītau rāma-lakṣmaṇau
28. ṛkṣa-vānara-vīrāṇām anīkāni praharṣaya ca
api etau sādītau rāma-lakṣmaṇau viśalyau kuru
28. Gladden the armies of the bear and monkey heroes! And also make these two, Rāma and Lakṣmaṇa, who have been struck down, free from arrows.
गत्वा परममध्वानमुपर्युपरि सागरम् ।
हिमवन्तं नगश्रेष्ठं हनूमन् गन्तुमर्हसि ॥२९॥
29. gatvā paramamadhvānamuparyupari sāgaram ,
himavantaṃ nagaśreṣṭhaṃ hanūman gantumarhasi.
29. gatvā paramam adhvānam upari upari sāgaram |
himavantam naga-śreṣṭham hanūman gantum arhasi
29. hanūman paramam adhvānam sāgaram upari upari
gatvā naga-śreṣṭham himavantam gantum arhasi
29. Having traversed a very long path, above and over the ocean, O Hanūman, you ought to go to the Himālaya, the foremost of mountains.
ततः काञ्चनमत्युग्रमृषभं पर्वतोत्तमम् ।
कैलासशिखरं चापि द्रक्ष्यस्यरिनिषूदन ॥३०॥
30. tataḥ kāñcanamatyugramṛṣabhaṃ parvatottamam ,
kailāsaśikharaṃ cāpi drakṣyasyariniṣūdana.
30. tataḥ kāñcanam ati-ugram ṛṣabham parvata-uttamam

30. Then, O destroyer of foes, you will see the golden, exceedingly formidable Ṛṣabha, the best of mountains, and also the Kailāsa peak.
तयोः शिखरयोर्मध्ये प्रदीप्तमतुलप्रभम् ।
सर्वौषधियुतं वीर द्रक्ष्यस्यौषधिपर्वतम् ॥३१॥
31. tayoḥ śikharayormadhye pradīptamatulaprabham ,
sarvauṣadhiyutaṃ vīra drakṣyasyauṣadhiparvatam.

31. Between those two peaks, O hero, you will see the Herb Mountain, which is resplendent, of incomparable brilliance, and rich with all kinds of medicinal herbs.
तस्य वानरशार्दूलचतस्रो मूर्ध्नि संभवाः ।
द्रक्ष्यस्योषधयो दीप्ता दीपयन्त्यो दिशो दश ॥३२॥
32. tasya vānaraśārdūlacatasro mūrdhni saṃbhavāḥ ,
drakṣyasyoṣadhayo dīptā dīpayantyo diśo daśa.

32. Oh, tiger among monkeys, you will see four brilliant herbs, born on its peak, illuminating all ten directions.
मृतसंजीवनीं चैव विशल्यकरणीमपि ।
सौवर्णकरणीं चैव संधानीं च महौषधीम् ॥३३॥
33. mṛtasaṃjīvanīṃ caiva viśalyakaraṇīmapi ,
sauvarṇakaraṇīṃ caiva saṃdhānīṃ ca mahauṣadhīm.
33. mṛtasaṃjīvanīm ca eva viśalyakaraṇīm api
sauvarṇakaraṇīm ca eva saṃdhānīm ca mahauṣadhīm
33. mṛtasaṃjīvanīm ca eva,

33. (You will see) the "mṛtasaṃjīvanī" (reviving the dead), the "viśalyakaraṇī" (removing arrows/foreign objects), the "sauvarṇakaraṇī" (restoring golden complexion), and the great "saṃdhānī" (joining/healing) herb.
ताः सर्वा हनुमन् गृह्य क्षिप्रमागन्तुमर्हसि ।
आश्वासय हरीन्प्राणैर्योज्य गन्धवहात्मजः ॥३४॥
34. tāḥ sarvā hanuman gṛhya kṣipramāgantumarhasi ,
āśvāsaya harīnprāṇairyojya gandhavahātmajaḥ.

34. Oh Hanuman, son of the wind (gandhavahātmaja), you must quickly return, taking all those (herbs). Reassure the monkeys by restoring their vital breaths (prāṇa).
श्रुत्वा जाम्बवतो वाक्यं हनूमान् हरिपुंगवः ।
आपूर्यत बलोद्धर्षैस्तोयवेगैरिवार्णवः ॥३५॥
35. śrutvā jāmbavato vākyaṃ hanūmān haripuṃgavaḥ ,
āpūryata baloddharṣaistoyavegairivārṇavaḥ.

35. Having heard the words of Jambavat, Hanuman, the best of monkeys, was filled with surging strength and enthusiasm, like an ocean filled by the rush of waters.
स पर्वततटाग्रस्थः पीडयन्पर्वतोत्तरम् ।
हनूमान्दृश्यते वीरो द्वितीय इव पर्वतः ॥३६॥
36. sa parvatataṭāgrasthaḥ pīḍayanparvatottaram ,
hanūmāndṛśyate vīro dvitīya iva parvataḥ.
36. saḥ parvatataṭāgrasthaḥ pīḍayan parvatottaram
hanumān dṛśyate vīraḥ dvitīyaḥ iva parvataḥ
36. Standing on the peak of the mountain, pressing down upon its upper part, the heroic Hanumān was seen, appearing like a second mountain.
हरिपादविनिर्भिन्नो निषसाद स पर्वतः ।
न शशाक तदात्मानं सोढुं भृशनिपीडितः ॥३७॥
37. haripādavinirbhinno niṣasāda sa parvataḥ ,
na śaśāka tadātmānaṃ soḍhuṃ bhṛśanipīḍitaḥ.
37. haripādavinirbhinnaḥ niṣasāda saḥ parvataḥ
na śaśāka tadā ātmānam soḍhum bhṛśanipīḍitaḥ
37. That mountain, shattered by Hanumān's foot, sank down. Severely crushed, it could not then bear itself (ātman).
तस्य पेतुर्नगा भूमौ हरिवेगाच्च जज्वलुः ।
शृङ्गाणि च व्यकीर्यन्त पीडितस्य हनूमता ॥३८॥
38. tasya peturnagā bhūmau harivegācca jajvaluḥ ,
śṛṅgāṇi ca vyakīryanta pīḍitasya hanūmatā.
38. tasya petuḥ nagāḥ bhūmau harivegāt ca jajvaluḥ
śṛṅgāṇi ca vyakīryanta pīḍitasya hanūmatā
38. Its trees fell to the ground, and due to Hanumān's force, they blazed. Its peaks were also scattered, as it was crushed by Hanumān.
तस्मिन् संपीड्यमाने तु भग्नद्रुमशिलातले ।
न शेकुर्वानराः स्थातुं घूर्णमाने नगोत्तमे ॥३९॥
39. tasmin saṃpīḍyamāne tu bhagnadrumaśilātale ,
na śekurvānarāḥ sthātuṃ ghūrṇamāne nagottame.

śekuḥ vānarāḥ sthātum ghūrṇamāne nagottame
39. And while that supreme mountain, with its trees broken and rocks shattered, was being utterly crushed and swaying, the monkeys were unable to stand.
स घूर्णितमहाद्वारा प्रभग्नगृहगोपुरा ।
लङ्का त्रासाकुला रात्रौ प्रनृत्तेवाभवत्तदा ॥४०॥
40. sa ghūrṇitamahādvārā prabhagnagṛhagopurā ,
laṅkā trāsākulā rātrau pranṛttevābhavattadā.

40. That Lanka, with its great gates shaken and its houses and main gates shattered, became overwhelmed with fear that night, as if it were dancing.
पृथिवीधरसंकाशो निपीड्य धरणीधरम् ।
पृथिवीं क्षोभयामास सार्णवां मारुतात्मजः ॥४१॥
41. pṛthivīdharasaṃkāśo nipīḍya dharaṇīdharam ,
pṛthivīṃ kṣobhayāmāsa sārṇavāṃ mārutātmajaḥ.

41. The son of Marut (Hanuman), resembling a mountain, pressed down the (Mahendra) mountain and agitated the earth along with its oceans.
पद्भ्यां तु शैलमापीड्य वडवामुखवन्मुखम् ।
विवृत्योग्रं ननादोच्चैस्त्रासयन्निव राक्षसान् ॥४२॥
42. padbhyāṃ tu śailamāpīḍya vaḍavāmukhavanmukham ,
vivṛtyograṃ nanādoccaistrāsayanniva rākṣasān.

42. Indeed, pressing down the mountain with his feet, he opened his dreadful mouth wide, like the submarine fire, and roared loudly, as if to terrify the Rākṣasas.
तस्य नानद्यमानस्य श्रुत्वा निनदमद्भुतम् ।
लङ्कास्था राक्षसाः सर्वे न शेकुः स्पन्दितुं भयात् ॥४३॥
43. tasya nānadyamānasya śrutvā ninadamadbhutam ,
laṅkāsthā rākṣasāḥ sarve na śekuḥ spandituṃ bhayāt.

43. Having heard his astonishing roar, all the Rākṣasas residing in Lanka were unable to stir due to fear.
नमस्कृत्वाथ रामाय मारुतिर्भीमविक्रमः ।
राघवार्थे परं कर्म समैहत परंतपः ॥४४॥
44. namaskṛtvātha rāmāya mārutirbhīmavikramaḥ ,
rāghavārthe paraṃ karma samaihata paraṃtapaḥ.

44. Then, Māruti, who possessed formidable valor and was a scorcher of foes, having bowed to Rāma, undertook a great task for Rāghava's sake.
स पुच्छमुद्यम्य भुजंगकल्पं विनम्य पृष्ठं श्रवणे निकुञ्च्य ।
विवृत्य वक्त्रं वडवामुखाभमापुप्लुवे व्योम्नि स चण्डवेगः ॥४५॥
45. sa pucchamudyamya bhujaṃgakalpaṃ vinamya pṛṣṭhaṃ śravaṇe nikuñcya ,
vivṛtya vaktraṃ vaḍavāmukhābhamāpupluve vyomni sa caṇḍavegaḥ.

vinamya pṛṣṭham śravaṇe nikuñcya

45. Raising his tail, which resembled a serpent, bending his back, and contracting his ears, he, with ferocious speed, opened his mouth like the submarine fire and leaped into the sky.
स वृक्षषण्डांस्तरसा जहार शैलाञ् शिलाः प्राकृतवानरांश्च ।
बाहूरुवेगोद्धतसंप्रणुन्नास्ते क्षीणवेगाः सलिले निपेतुः ॥४६॥
46. sa vṛkṣaṣaṇḍāṃstarasā jahāra śailāñ śilāḥ prākṛtavānarāṃśca ,
bāhūruvegoddhatasaṃpraṇunnāste kṣīṇavegāḥ salile nipetuḥ.

46. He forcefully uprooted groups of trees, mountains, rocks, and even ordinary monkeys. Those, propelled aloft by the powerful speed of his arms and thighs, fell into the water once their momentum was spent.
स तौ प्रसार्योरगभोगकल्पौ भुजौ भुजंगारिनिकाशवीर्यः ।
जगाम मेरुं नगराजमग्र्यं दिशः प्रकर्षन्निव वायुसूनुः ॥४७॥
47. sa tau prasāryoragabhogakalpau bhujau bhujaṃgārinikāśavīryaḥ ,
jagāma meruṃ nagarājamagryaṃ diśaḥ prakarṣanniva vāyusūnuḥ.

47. Vāyusūnu (Hanuman), whose strength was comparable to Garuḍa (the enemy of serpents), extended his two arms, which resembled the bodies of snakes, and proceeded towards the foremost king of mountains, Meru, as if pulling the very directions along with him.
स सागरं घूर्णितवीचिमालं तदा भृशं भ्रामितसर्वसत्त्वम् ।
समीक्षमाणः सहसा जगाम चक्रं यथा विष्णुकराग्रमुक्तम् ॥४८॥
48. sa sāgaraṃ ghūrṇitavīcimālaṃ tadā bhṛśaṃ bhrāmitasarvasattvam ,
samīkṣamāṇaḥ sahasā jagāma cakraṃ yathā viṣṇukarāgramuktam.

48. He then swiftly proceeded, observing the ocean whose garland of waves whirled intensely, churning all its creatures, just like a discus released from Vishnu's fingertip.
स पर्वतान् वृक्षगणान् सरांसि नदीस्तटाकानि पुरोत्तमानि ।
स्फीताञ्जनांस्तानपि संप्रपश्यञ्जगाम वेगात् पितृतुल्यवेगः ॥४९॥
49. sa parvatān vṛkṣagaṇān sarāṃsi nadīstaṭākāni purottamāni ,
sphītāñjanāṃstānapi saṃprapaśyañjagāma vegāt pitṛtulyavegaḥ.

49. He, observing mountains, dense forests, lakes, rivers, reservoirs, and excellent cities, as well as prosperous people, proceeded with the speed of his father (Vāyu), swiftly moving onward.
आदित्यपथमाश्रित्य जगाम स गतश्रमः ।
स ददर्श हरिश्रेष्ठो हिमवन्तं नगोत्तमम् ॥५०॥
50. ādityapathamāśritya jagāma sa gataśramaḥ ,
sa dadarśa hariśreṣṭho himavantaṃ nagottamam.

50. He, free from fatigue, traversed the path of the sun. That foremost of monkeys (Hanumān) then saw the Himālayas, the best among mountains.
नानाप्रस्रवणोपेतं बहुकंदरनिर्झरम् ।
श्वेताभ्रचयसंकाशैः शिखरैश्चारुदर्शनैः ॥५१॥
51. nānāprasravaṇopetaṃ bahukaṃdaranirjharam ,
śvetābhracayasaṃkāśaiḥ śikharaiścārudarśanaiḥ.

51. (He saw the Himālayas) which were endowed with diverse springs, and had many caves and waterfalls, characterized by peaks that resembled masses of white clouds and were beautiful to behold.
स तं समासाद्य महानगेन्द्रमतिप्रवृद्धोत्तमघोरशृङ्गम् ।
ददर्श पुण्यानि महाश्रमाणि सुरर्षिसंघोत्तमसेवितानि ॥५२॥
52. sa taṃ samāsādya mahānagendramatipravṛddhottamaghoraśṛṅgam ,
dadarśa puṇyāni mahāśramāṇi surarṣisaṃghottamasevitāni.

52. Having approached that great lord of mountains, whose excellent and formidable peaks were exceedingly high, he saw many sacred hermitages, frequented by the most eminent assemblies of divine sages.
स ब्रह्मकोशं रजतालयं च शक्रालयं रुद्रशरप्रमोक्षम् ।
हयाननं ब्रह्मशिरश्च दीप्तं ददर्श वैवस्वत किंकरांश्च ॥५३॥
53. sa brahmakośaṃ rajatālayaṃ ca śakrālayaṃ rudraśarapramokṣam ,
hayānanaṃ brahmaśiraśca dīptaṃ dadarśa vaivasvata kiṃkarāṃśca.

53. He saw the treasury of Brahmā, the silver abode, the abode of Indra, the site of Rudra's arrow release, Hayānana (the horse-faced deity), the blazing head of Brahmā, and the attendants of Vaivasvata.
वज्रालयं वैश्वरणालयं च सूर्यप्रभं सूर्यनिबन्धनं च ।
ब्रह्मासनं शंकरकार्मुकं च ददर्श नाभिं च वसुंधरायाः ॥५४॥
54. vajrālayaṃ vaiśvaraṇālayaṃ ca sūryaprabhaṃ sūryanibandhanaṃ ca ,
brahmāsanaṃ śaṃkarakārmukaṃ ca dadarśa nābhiṃ ca vasuṃdharāyāḥ.

54. He saw the abode of the thunderbolt, the abode of Kubera, the effulgence of the sun, the binding of the sun, the seat of Brahmā, Śaṅkara's (Shiva's) bow, and the navel of the earth.
कैलासमग्र्यं हिमवच्छिलां च तथर्षभं काञ्चनशैलमग्र्यम् ।
स दीप्तसर्वौषधिसंप्रदीप्तं ददर्श सर्वौषधिपर्वतेन्द्रम् ॥५५॥
55. kailāsamagryaṃ himavacchilāṃ ca tatharṣabhaṃ kāñcanaśailamagryam ,
sa dīptasarvauṣadhisaṃpradīptaṃ dadarśa sarvauṣadhiparvatendram.
55. kailāsam agryam himavatśilām ca
tathā ṛṣabham kāñcanaśailam agryam
saḥ dīptasarvauṣadhisampradīptam
dadarśa sarvauṣadhiparvatendram
55. He saw the excellent Kailāsa, the peaks of the Himavat, and also the foremost golden mountain named Ṛṣabha. He beheld the lord of all herb-mountains, which was brilliantly ablaze with all radiant medicinal plants.
स तं समीक्ष्यानलरश्मिदीप्तं विसिष्मिये वासवदूतसूनुः ।
आप्लुत्य तं चौषधिपर्वतेन्द्रं तत्रौषधीनां विचयं चकार ॥५६॥
56. sa taṃ samīkṣyānalaraśmidīptaṃ visiṣmiye vāsavadūtasūnuḥ ,
āplutya taṃ cauṣadhiparvatendraṃ tatrauṣadhīnāṃ vicayaṃ cakāra.
56. saḥ tam samīkṣya anala-raśmi-dīptam
visismiye vāsava-dūta-sūnuḥ
āplutya tam ca auṣadhi-parvata-indram
tatra auṣadhīnām vicayam cakāra
56. The son of the messenger of Indra (Hanuman), observing that mountain ablaze with fiery rays, was astonished. Having ascended that excellent mountain of medicinal herbs, he then began to search for the herbs.
स योजनसहस्राणि समतीत्य महाकपिः ।
दिव्यौषधिधरं शैलं व्यचरन्मारुतात्मजः ॥५७॥
57. sa yojanasahasrāṇi samatītya mahākapiḥ ,
divyauṣadhidharaṃ śailaṃ vyacaranmārutātmajaḥ.
57. saḥ yojana-sahasrāṇi samatītya mahā-kapiḥ
divya-auṣadhi-dharam śailam vyacarat māruta-ātmajaḥ
57. That great monkey, the son of Māruta (Hanuman), having traversed thousands of yojanas, wandered across the mountain that bore divine medicinal herbs.
महौषध्यस्तु ताः सर्वास्तस्मिन्पर्वतसत्तमे ।
विज्ञायार्थिनमायान्तं ततो जग्मुरदर्शनम् ॥५८॥
58. mahauṣadhyastu tāḥ sarvāstasminparvatasattame ,
vijñāyārthinamāyāntaṃ tato jagmuradarśanam.
58. mahā-auṣadhyaḥ tu tāḥ sarvāḥ tasmin parvata-sattame
vijñāya arthinam āyāntam tataḥ jagmuḥ adarśanam
58. But all those great medicinal herbs on that excellent mountain, realizing that a seeker was approaching, then disappeared from sight.
स ता महात्मा हनुमानपश्यंश्चुकोप कोपाच्च भृशं ननाद ।
अमृष्यमाणो ऽग्निनिकाशचक्षुर्महीधरेन्द्रं तमुवाच वाक्यम् ॥५९॥
59. sa tā mahātmā hanumānapaśyaṃścukopa kopācca bhṛśaṃ nanāda ,
amṛṣyamāṇo'gninikāśacakṣurmahīdharendraṃ tamuvāca vākyam.
59. saḥ tāḥ mahā-ātmā hanumān apaśyan
cukopa kopāt ca bhṛśam nanāda
amṛṣyamāṇaḥ agni-nikāśa-cakṣuḥ
mahīdhra-indram tam uvāca vākyam
59. That great-souled Hanuman, not seeing those herbs, became angry and roared mightily out of rage. With eyes blazing like fire, unable to tolerate the situation, he spoke these words to that lord of mountains.
किमेतदेवं सुविनिश्चितं ते यद् राघवे नासि कृतानुकम्पः ।
पश्याद्य मद्बाहुबलाभिभूतो विकीर्णमात्मानमथो नगेन्द्र ॥६०॥
60. kimetadevaṃ suviniścitaṃ te yad rāghave nāsi kṛtānukampaḥ ,
paśyādya madbāhubalābhibhūto vikīrṇamātmānamatho nagendra.
60. kim etat evam suvinirścitam te
yat rāghave na asi kṛtānukampaḥ
paśya adya mat bāhubala abhibhūtaḥ
vikīrṇam ātmānam atho nagendra
60. nagendra kim etat evam suvinirścitam
te yat rāghave na kṛtānukampaḥ

abhibhūtaḥ vikīrṇam ātmānam atho
60. Is this, then, your firm decision, O king of mountains, that you show no compassion towards Rāghava? Behold now yourself, scattered and dismembered (ātman), overcome by the might of my arms.
स तस्य शृङ्गं सनगं सनागं सकाञ्चनं धातुसहस्रजुष्टम् ।
विकीर्णकूटं चलिताग्रसानुं प्रगृह्य वेगात् सहसोन्ममाथ ॥६१॥
61. sa tasya śṛṅgaṃ sanagaṃ sanāgaṃ sakāñcanaṃ dhātusahasrajuṣṭam ,
vikīrṇakūṭaṃ calitāgrasānuṃ pragṛhya vegāt sahasonmamātha.

61. He (Hanumān), seizing that peak of the mountain with speed and sudden force, uprooted it. It was adorned with trees, elephants, and gold, endowed with thousands of minerals, its lesser peaks already scattered, and its highest ridges shaken.
स तं समुत्पाट्य खमुत्पपात वित्रास्य लोकान् ससुरान् सुरेन्द्रान् ।
संस्तूयमानः खचरैरनेकैर्जगाम वेगाद्गरुडोग्रवीर्यः ॥६२॥
62. sa taṃ samutpāṭya khamutpapāta vitrāsya lokān sasurān surendrān ,
saṃstūyamānaḥ khacarairanekairjagāma vegādgaruḍogravīryaḥ.

anekaiḥ jagāma vegāt garuḍogravīryaḥ

62. He (Hanumān), having uprooted that peak, flew up into the sky, terrifying all beings in the worlds, including the gods and their lords. Praised by many sky-dwellers, he proceeded with speed, possessing the formidable might of Garuḍa.
स भास्कराध्वानमनुप्रपन्नस्तद्भास्कराभं शिखरं प्रगृह्य ।
बभौ तदा भास्करसंनिकाशो रवेः समीपे प्रतिभास्कराभः ॥६३॥
63. sa bhāskarādhvānamanuprapannastadbhāskarābhaṃ śikharaṃ pragṛhya ,
babhau tadā bhāskarasaṃnikāśo raveḥ samīpe pratibhāskarābhaḥ.

tat bhāskarābham śikharam pragṛhya
babhau tadā bhāskarasaṃnikāśaḥ

63. He (Hanumān), having reached the sun's path and seizing that peak which shone like the sun, then himself shone with a radiance resembling the sun, appearing like a rival sun in the vicinity of the actual sun.
स तेन शैलेन भृशं रराज शैलोपमो गन्धवहात्मजस्तु ।
सहस्रधारेण सपावकेन चक्रेण खे विष्णुरिवोद्धृतेन ॥६४॥
64. sa tena śailena bhṛśaṃ rarāja śailopamo gandhavahātmajastu ,
sahasradhāreṇa sapāvakena cakreṇa khe viṣṇurivoddhṛtena.
64. saḥ tena śailena bhṛśam rarāja
śailopamaḥ gandhavahātmajaḥ tu
sahasradhāreṇa sa-pāvakena
cakreṇa khe viṣṇuḥ iva uddhṛtena

khe sahasradhāreṇa sa-pāvakena uddhṛtena cakreṇa viṣṇuḥ iva
64. The son of the wind-god (Hanuman), who was like a mountain, shone exceedingly with that mountain, just as Viṣṇu shines in the sky with his uplifted, fiery discus having a thousand edges.
तं वानराः प्रेक्ष्य तदा विनेदुः स तानपि प्रेक्ष्य मुदा ननाद ।
तेषां समुद्घुष्टरवं निशम्य लङ्कालया भीमतरं विनेदुः ॥६५॥
65. taṃ vānarāḥ prekṣya tadā vineduḥ sa tānapi prekṣya mudā nanāda ,
teṣāṃ samudghuṣṭaravaṃ niśamya laṅkālayā bhīmataraṃ vineduḥ.

teṣām samudghuṣṭa-ravam niśamya

65. Upon seeing him, the monkeys then roared. He (Hanuman), seeing them, also roared with joy. Hearing their combined loud roar, the residents of Laṅkā roared even more terribly.
ततो महात्मा निपपात तस्मिञ् शैलोत्तमे वानरसैन्यमध्ये ।
हर्युत्तमेभ्यः शिरसाभिवाद्य विभीषणं तत्र च सस्वजे सः ॥६६॥
66. tato mahātmā nipapāta tasmiñ śailottame vānarasainyamadhye ,
haryuttamebhyaḥ śirasābhivādya vibhīṣaṇaṃ tatra ca sasvaje saḥ.
66. tataḥ mahātmā nipapāta tasmin
śailottame vānarasainya-madhye
hari-uttamebhyaḥ śirasā abhivādya
vibhīṣaṇam tatra ca sasvaje saḥ

abhivādya ca tatra vibhīṣaṇam sasvaje
66. Then the great-souled (mahātman) Hanuman descended upon that supreme mountain, amidst the monkey army. Having bowed his head to the chief monkeys, he also embraced Vibhīṣaṇa there.
तावप्युभौ मानुषराजपुत्रौ तं गन्धमाघ्राय महौषधीनाम् ।
बभूवतुस्तत्र तदा विशल्याव् उत्तस्थुरन्ये च हरिप्रवीराः ॥६७॥
67. tāvapyubhau mānuṣarājaputrau taṃ gandhamāghrāya mahauṣadhīnām ,
babhūvatustatra tadā viśalyāv uttasthuranye ca haripravīrāḥ.
67. tau api ubhau mānuṣarājaputrau
tam gandham āghrāya mahā-auṣadhīnām
babhūvatuḥ tatra tadā viśalyau
uttasthuḥ anye ca hari-pravīrāḥ
67. mahā-auṣadhīnām tam gandham āghrāya

tatra tadā viśalyau babhūvatuḥ
ca anye hari-pravīrāḥ uttasthuḥ
67. Both those two sons of the human king (Rāma and Lakṣmaṇa), having smelled the fragrance of those great medicinal plants, then became free from their wounds there. And other chief monkeys also rose up.
ततो हरिर्गन्धवहात्मजस्तु तमोषधीशैलमुदग्रवीर्यः ।
निनाय वेगाद्धिमवन्तमेव पुनश्च रामेण समाजगाम ॥६८॥
68. tato harirgandhavahātmajastu tamoṣadhīśailamudagravīryaḥ ,
nināya vegāddhimavantameva punaśca rāmeṇa samājagāma.
68. tataḥ hariḥ gandhavaha-ātmajaḥ tu tam oṣadhī-śailam udagra-vīryaḥ
nināya vegāt himavantam eva punaḥ ca rāmeṇa samājagāma
68. tataḥ udagravīryaḥ gandhavahātmajaḥ hariḥ tam oṣadhīśailam
vegāt himavantam eva nināya punaḥ ca rāmeṇa samājagāma
68. Then, Hanumān, the mighty son of the wind god, swiftly carried that mountain of medicinal herbs back to the Himalayas, and afterwards, he rejoined Rāma.
