निवर्तमानः संहृष्टो रावणः स दुरात्मवान् ।
जह्रे पथि नरेन्द्रर्षिदेवगन्धर्वकन्यकाः ॥१॥
1. nivartamānaḥ saṃhṛṣṭo rāvaṇaḥ sa durātmavān ,

1. That joyous Rāvaṇa, the evil-minded one, while returning, abducted on the way the maidens of kings, sages, gods, and gandharvas.
दर्शनीयां हि यां रक्षः कन्यां स्त्रीं वाथ पश्यति ।
हत्वा बन्धुजनं तस्या विमाने संन्यवेशयत् ॥२॥
2. darśanīyāṃ hi yāṃ rakṣaḥ kanyāṃ strīṃ vātha paśyati ,
hatvā bandhujanaṃ tasyā vimāne saṃnyaveśayat.
2. darśanīyām hi yām rakṣaḥ kanyām strīm vā atha
paśyati hatvā bandhujanam tasyāḥ vimāne saṃnyaveśayat

2. Indeed, any beautiful maiden or woman whom the rākṣasa (Rāvaṇa) sees, he places her in his aerial car after killing her relatives.
तत्र पन्नगयक्षाणां मानुषाणां च रक्षसाम् ।
दैत्यानां दानवानां च कन्या जग्राह रावणः ॥३॥
3. tatra pannagayakṣāṇāṃ mānuṣāṇāṃ ca rakṣasām ,
daityānāṃ dānavānāṃ ca kanyā jagrāha rāvaṇaḥ.

3. There, Rāvaṇa seized maidens belonging to serpents, yakṣas, humans, rākṣasas, daityas, and dānavas.
दीर्घकेश्यः सुचार्वङ्ग्यः पूर्णचन्द्रनिभाननाः ।
शोकायत्तास्तरुण्यश्च समस्ता स्तननम्रिताः ॥४॥
4. dīrghakeśyaḥ sucārvaṅgyaḥ pūrṇacandranibhānanāḥ ,
śokāyattāstaruṇyaśca samastā stananamritāḥ.

4. They were long-haired, with very beautiful limbs, and faces resembling the full moon. These young women, all overwhelmed by sorrow, were bowed down by their breasts.
तुल्यमग्न्यर्चिषां तत्र शोकाग्निभयसंभवम् ।
प्रवेपमाना दुःखार्ता मुमुचुर्बाष्पजं जलम् ॥५॥
5. tulyamagnyarciṣāṃ tatra śokāgnibhayasaṃbhavam ,
pravepamānā duḥkhārtā mumucurbāṣpajaṃ jalam.
5. tulyam agnyarciṣām tatra śokāgnibhayasambhavaṃ
pravepamānāḥ duḥkhārtāḥ mumucuḥ bāṣpajam jalam
5. tatra pravepamānāḥ duḥkhārtāḥ agnyarciṣām tulyam
śokāgnibhayasambhavaṃ bāṣpajam jalam mumucuḥ
5. There, greatly trembling and afflicted by sorrow, they shed tear-water, which was comparable to fire's flames and arose from the fire of sorrow and fear.
तासां निश्वसमानानां निश्वसैः संप्रदीपितम् ।
अग्निहोत्रमिवाभाति संनिरुद्धाग्निपुष्पकम् ॥६॥
6. tāsāṃ niśvasamānānāṃ niśvasaiḥ saṃpradīpitam ,
agnihotramivābhāti saṃniruddhāgnipuṣpakam.
6. tāsām niśvasamānānām niśvasaiḥ sampradīpitam
agnihotram iva ābhāti saṃniruddhāgnipuṣpakam
6. saṃniruddhāgnipuṣpakam agnihotram iva tāsām
niśvasamānānām niśvasaiḥ sampradīpitam ābhāti
6. It appeared like a confined (Vedic fire ritual) agnihotra, its flames intensely kindled by the sighs of those sighing women.
का चिद्दध्यौ सुदुःखार्ता हन्यादपि हि मामयम् ।
स्मृत्वा मातॄः पितॄन्भ्रातॄन्पुत्रान् वै श्वशुरानपि ।
दुःखशोकसमाविष्टा विलेपुः सहिताः स्त्रियः ॥७॥
7. kā ciddadhyau suduḥkhārtā hanyādapi hi māmayam ,
smṛtvā mātṝḥ pitṝnbhrātṝnputrān vai śvaśurānapi ,
duḥkhaśokasamāviṣṭā vilepuḥ sahitāḥ striyaḥ.
7. kā cit dadhyau sudukhārtā hanyāt api
hi mām ayam smṛtvā mātṛḥ pitṝn
bhrātṝn putrān vai śvaśurān api
duḥkhaśokasamāviṣṭā vilepuḥ sahitāḥ striyaḥ

hanyāt dadhyau mātṛḥ pitṝn bhrātṝn putrān
vai śvaśurān api smṛtvā
duḥkhaśokasamāviṣṭāḥ sahitāḥ striyaḥ vilepuḥ
7. Some woman, deeply distressed by sorrow, pondered, "This one might indeed kill me." Remembering their mothers, fathers, brothers, sons, and also fathers-in-law, the women, overcome by sorrow and grief, lamented together.
कथं नु खलु मे पुत्रः करिष्यति मया विना ।
कथं माता कथं भ्राता निमग्नाः शोकसागरे ॥८॥
8. kathaṃ nu khalu me putraḥ kariṣyati mayā vinā ,
kathaṃ mātā kathaṃ bhrātā nimagnāḥ śokasāgare.
8. katham nu khalu me putraḥ kariṣyati mayā vinā
katham mātā katham bhrātā nimagnāḥ śokāsāgare
8. me putraḥ mayā vinā katham nu khalu kariṣyati

8. How indeed will my son manage without me? How will my mother and brother fare, immersed in an ocean of grief (śoka)?
हा कथं नु करिष्यामि भर्तारं दैवतं विना ।
मृत्यो प्रसीद याचे त्वां नय मां यमसादनम् ॥९॥
9. hā kathaṃ nu kariṣyāmi bhartāraṃ daivataṃ vinā ,
mṛtyo prasīda yāce tvāṃ naya māṃ yamasādanam.
9. hā katham nu kariṣyāmi bhartāram daivatam vinā
mṛtyo prasīda yāce tvām naya mām yamasādanam
9. hā bhartāram daivatam vinā katham nu kariṣyāmi
mṛtyo prasīda tvām yāce mām yamasādanam naya
9. Alas! How indeed will I manage without my husband, who is my deity? O Death, be gracious! I implore you, take me to Yama's abode.
किं नु मे दुष्कृतं कर्म कृतं देहान्तरे पुरा ।
ततो ऽस्मि धर्षितानेन पतिता शोकसागरे ॥१०॥
10. kiṃ nu me duṣkṛtaṃ karma kṛtaṃ dehāntare purā ,
tato'smi dharṣitānena patitā śokasāgare.
10. kim nu me duṣkṛtam karma kṛtam dehāntare purā
tataḥ asmi dharṣitā anena patitā śokasāgare
10. me purā dehāntare kim nu duṣkṛtam karma kṛtam
tataḥ anena dharṣitā śokasāgare patitā asmi
10. What evil action (karma) have I certainly performed in a previous body (deha) formerly? As a result, I have been disgraced by him and have fallen into an ocean of sorrow.
न खल्विदानीं पश्यामि दुःखस्यान्तमिहात्मनः ।
अहो धिन्मानुषांल् लोकान्नास्ति खल्वधमः परः ॥११॥
11. na khalvidānīṃ paśyāmi duḥkhasyāntamihātmanaḥ ,
aho dhinmānuṣāṃl lokānnāsti khalvadhamaḥ paraḥ.
11. na khalu idānīm paśyāmi duḥkhasya antam iha ātmanaḥ
aho dhik mānuṣān lokān na asti khalu adhamaḥ paraḥ
11. idānīm iha ātmanaḥ duḥkhasya antam na khalu paśyāmi
aho mānuṣān lokān dhik khalu adhamaḥ paraḥ na asti
11. Indeed, I do not see an end to this sorrow for my own self (ātman) now. Oh, woe to human beings! Truly, there is no one more wretched.
यद्दुर्बला बलवता बान्धवा रावणेन मे ।
उदितेनैव सूर्येण तारका इव नाशिताः ॥१२॥
12. yaddurbalā balavatā bāndhavā rāvaṇena me ,
uditenaiva sūryeṇa tārakā iva nāśitāḥ.
12. yat durbalā balavatā bāndhavā rāvaṇena me
uditena eva sūryeṇa tārakā iva nāśitāḥ
12. yat me durbalā bāndhavā balavatā rāvaṇena
uditena sūryeṇa tārakā iva nāśitāḥ
12. My weak relatives were destroyed by the powerful Rāvaṇa, just as stars are obliterated by the rising sun.
अहो सुबलवद् रक्षो वधोपायेषु रज्यते ।
अहो दुर्वृत्तमात्मानं स्वयमेव न बुध्यते ॥१३॥
13. aho subalavad rakṣo vadhopāyeṣu rajyate ,
aho durvṛttamātmānaṃ svayameva na budhyate.
13. aho subalavat rakṣaḥ vadhopāyeṣu rajyate
aho durvṛttam ātmānam svayam eva na budhyate
13. aho rakṣaḥ subalavat asti vadhopāyeṣu rajyate
aho durvṛttam ātmānam svayam eva na budhyate
13. Oh, how exceedingly powerful this demon is, delighting in means of destruction! Oh, it does not understand its own wicked self (ātman).
सर्वथा सदृशस्तावद्विक्रमो ऽस्य दुरात्मनः ।
इदं त्वसदृशं कर्म परदाराभिमर्शनम् ॥१४॥
14. sarvathā sadṛśastāvadvikramo'sya durātmanaḥ ,
idaṃ tvasadṛśaṃ karma paradārābhimarśanam.
14. sarvathā sadṛśaḥ tāvat vikramaḥ asya durātmanaḥ
idam tu asadṛśam karma paradārābhimarśanam
14. durātmanaḥ asya vikramaḥ sarvathā tāvat sadṛśaḥ (asti)
tu idam paradārābhimarśanam karma asadṛśam (asti)
14. Indeed, the prowess of this wicked being is similar in every respect. However, this act of molesting another's wife is improper.
यस्मादेष परख्यासु स्त्रीषु रज्यति दुर्मतिः ।
तस्माद्धि स्त्रीकृतेनैव वधं प्राप्स्यति वारणः ॥१५॥
15. yasmādeṣa parakhyāsu strīṣu rajyati durmatiḥ ,
tasmāddhi strīkṛtenaiva vadhaṃ prāpsyati vāraṇaḥ.
15. yasmāt eṣaḥ parakhyāsu strīṣu rajyati durmatiḥ
tasmāt hi strīkṛtena eva vadham prāpsyati vāraṇaḥ
15. yasmāt eṣaḥ durmatiḥ parakhyāsu strīṣu rajyati
tasmāt hi vāraṇaḥ strīkṛtena eva vadham prāpsyati
15. Because this evil-minded one delights in other men's wives, therefore, it is indeed on account of a woman that this obstructer will surely meet his death.
शप्तः स्त्रीभिः स तु तदा हततेजाः सुनिष्प्रभ ।
पतिव्रताभिः साध्वीभिः स्थिताभिः साधु वर्त्मनि ॥१६॥
16. śaptaḥ strībhiḥ sa tu tadā hatatejāḥ suniṣprabha ,
pativratābhiḥ sādhvībhiḥ sthitābhiḥ sādhu vartmani.
16. śaptaḥ strībhiḥ saḥ tu tadā hatatejāḥ suniṣprabha
pativratābhiḥ sādhvībhiḥ sthitābhiḥ sādhu vartmani
16. tada saḥ hatatejāḥ suniṣprabhaḥ tu sādhvībhiḥ sādhu
vartmani sthitābhiḥ pativratābhiḥ strībhiḥ śaptaḥ (abhūt)
16. Then, he, whose brilliance was destroyed and who was utterly without splendor, was cursed by chaste and virtuous women who were firmly established on the path of righteousness.
एवं विलपमानासु रावणो राक्षसाधिपः ।
प्रविवेश पुरीं लङ्कां पूज्यमानो निशाचरैः ॥१७॥
17. evaṃ vilapamānāsu rāvaṇo rākṣasādhipaḥ ,
praviveśa purīṃ laṅkāṃ pūjyamāno niśācaraiḥ.
17. evam vilapamānāsu rāvaṇaḥ rākṣasādhipaḥ
praviveśa purīm laṅkām pūjyamānaḥ niśācaraiḥ
17. evam vilapamānāsu (satīṣu) rākṣasādhipaḥ rāvaṇaḥ
niśācaraiḥ pūjyamānaḥ laṅkām purīm praviveśa
17. While they were thus lamenting, Rāvaṇa, the lord of the rākṣasas, entered the city of Laṅkā, being honored by the night-stalkers.
ततो राक्षसराजस्य स्वसा परमदुःखिता ।
पादयोः पतिता तस्य वक्तुमेवोपचक्रमे ॥१८॥
18. tato rākṣasarājasya svasā paramaduḥkhitā ,
pādayoḥ patitā tasya vaktumevopacakrame.
18. tataḥ rākṣasarājasya svasā paramaduḥkhitā
pādayoḥ patitā tasya vaktum eva upacakrame
18. Then, the greatly distressed sister of the king of Rākṣasas (Rāvaṇa) fell at his feet and began to speak.
ततः स्वसारमुत्थाप्य रावणः परिसान्त्वयन् ।
अब्रवीत् किमिदं भद्रे वक्तुमर्हसि मे द्रुतम् ॥१९॥
19. tataḥ svasāramutthāpya rāvaṇaḥ parisāntvayan ,
abravīt kimidaṃ bhadre vaktumarhasi me drutam.
19. tataḥ svasāram utthāpya rāvaṇaḥ parisantvayan
abravīt kim idam bhadre vaktum arhasi me drutam
19. Then, Rāvaṇa, lifting his sister up and comforting her, said, "O gentle one, what is this? You should tell me quickly."
सा बाष्पपरिरुद्धाक्षी राक्षसी वाक्यमब्रवीत् ।
हतास्मि विधवा राजंस्त्वया बलवता कृता ॥२०॥
20. sā bāṣpapariruddhākṣī rākṣasī vākyamabravīt ,
hatāsmi vidhavā rājaṃstvayā balavatā kṛtā.
20. sā bāṣpapariruddhākṣī rākṣasī vākyam abravīt
hatā asmi vidhavā rājan tvayā balavatā kṛtā
20. Her eyes choked with tears, the Rākṣasī spoke. "O king, I am ruined, made a widow by you, the powerful one."
एते विर्यात्त्वया राजन्दैत्या विनिहता रणे ।
कालकेया इति ख्याता महाबलपराक्रमाः ॥२१॥
21. ete viryāttvayā rājandaityā vinihatā raṇe ,
kālakeyā iti khyātā mahābalaparākramāḥ.
21. ete vīryāt tvayā rājan daityāḥ vinihatāḥ raṇe
kālakeyāḥ iti khyātāḥ mahābalaparākramāḥ
21. O king, by your valor, these Daityas, renowned as Kālakeyas, who possessed immense strength and prowess, were slain by you in battle.
तत्र मे निहतो भर्ता गरीयाञ्जीवितादपि ।
स त्वया दयितस्तत्र भ्रात्रा शत्रुसमेन वै ॥२२॥
22. tatra me nihato bhartā garīyāñjīvitādapi ,
sa tvayā dayitastatra bhrātrā śatrusamena vai.
22. tatra me nihataḥ bhartā garīyān jīvitāt api
saḥ tvayā dayitaḥ tatra bhrātrā śatrusamena vai
22. tatra me bhartā garīyān jīvitāt api nihataḥ
saḥ tvayā bhrātrā śatrusamena vai dayitaḥ tatra
22. There, my husband, dearer to me even than life itself, was slain. He, who was beloved (to me), was killed there by you, a brother who is truly like an enemy.
या त्वयास्मि हता राजन् स्वयमेवेह बन्धुना ।
दुःखं वैधव्यशब्दं च दत्तं भोक्ष्याम्यहं त्वया ॥२३॥
23. yā tvayāsmi hatā rājan svayameveha bandhunā ,
duḥkhaṃ vaidhavyaśabdaṃ ca dattaṃ bhokṣyāmyahaṃ tvayā.
23. yā tvayā asmi hatā rājan svayam eva iha bandhunā
duḥkham vaidhavyaśabdam ca dattam bhokṣyāmi aham tvayā
23. rājan yā aham tvayā bandhunā svayam eva iha hatā asmi
duḥkham ca vaidhavyaśabdam dattam tvayā bhokṣyāmi
23. O King, I, who have been, as it were, slain here by you, my own kinsman, will now endure the sorrow and the very name of widowhood which you have inflicted.
ननु नाम त्वया रक्ष्यो जामाता समरेष्वपि ।
तं निहत्य रणे राजन् स्वयमेव न लज्जसे ॥२४॥
24. nanu nāma tvayā rakṣyo jāmātā samareṣvapi ,
taṃ nihatya raṇe rājan svayameva na lajjase.
24. nanu nāma tvayā rakṣyaḥ jāmātā samareṣu api
tam nihatya raṇe rājan svayam eva na lajjase
24. nanu nāma tvayā jāmātā samareṣu api rakṣyaḥ
rājan tam raṇe svayam eva nihatya na lajjase
24. Surely, your son-in-law was to be protected by you, even in battles. Having personally slain him in battle, O King, do you not feel ashamed?
एवमुक्तस्तया रक्षो भगिन्या क्रोशमानया ।
अब्रवीत् सान्त्वयित्वा तां सामपूर्वमिदं वचः ॥२५॥
25. evamuktastayā rakṣo bhaginyā krośamānayā ,
abravīt sāntvayitvā tāṃ sāmapūrvamidaṃ vacaḥ.
25. evam uktaḥ tayā rākṣasaḥ bhaginyā krośamānayā
abravīt sāntvayitvā tām sāmapūrvam idam vacaḥ
25. evam krośamānayā bhaginyā tayā uktaḥ rākṣasaḥ
tām sāntvayitvā idam sāmapūrvam vacaḥ abravīt
25. Thus addressed by his wailing sister, the Rākṣasa, after comforting her, spoke these conciliatory words.
अलं वत्से विषादेन न भेतव्यं च सर्वशः ।
मानदानविशेषैस्त्वां तोषयिष्यामि नित्यशः ॥२६॥
26. alaṃ vatse viṣādena na bhetavyaṃ ca sarvaśaḥ ,
mānadānaviśeṣaistvāṃ toṣayiṣyāmi nityaśaḥ.
26. alam vatse viṣādena na bhetavyam ca sarvaśaḥ
mānadānaviśeṣaiḥ tvām toṣayiṣyāmi nityaśaḥ
26. vatse viṣādena alam ca sarvaśaḥ na bhetavyam
tvām mānadānaviśeṣaiḥ nityaśaḥ toṣayiṣyāmi
26. Enough, my dear child, with this sorrow; you should not fear at all. I will always satisfy you with special honors and gifts.
युद्धे प्रमत्तो व्याक्षिप्तो जयकाङ्क्षी क्षिपञ् शरान् ।
नावगच्छामि युद्धेषु स्वान्परान् वाप्यहं शुभे ।
तेनासौ निहतः संख्ये मया भर्ता तव स्वसः ॥२७॥
27. yuddhe pramatto vyākṣipto jayakāṅkṣī kṣipañ śarān ,
nāvagacchāmi yuddheṣu svānparān vāpyahaṃ śubhe ,
tenāsau nihataḥ saṃkhye mayā bhartā tava svasaḥ.
27. yuddhe pramattaḥ vyākṣiptaḥ jayakāṅkṣī
kṣipan śarān na avagacchāmi yuddheṣu
svān parān vā api aham śubhe tena asau
nihataḥ saṅkhye mayā bhartā tava svasaḥ
27. śubhe aham yuddhe pramattaḥ vyākṣiptaḥ
jayakāṅkṣī śarān kṣipan vā api yuddheṣu
svān parān na avagacchāmi tena svasaḥ
tava bhartā mayā saṅkhye asau nihataḥ
27. In battle, being reckless, distracted, desiring victory, and hurling arrows, I (ahám), O beautiful one, could not distinguish between my own (svān) and others' (parān) in the midst of fighting. Therefore, O sister, your husband was killed by me in that encounter.
अस्मिन् काले तु यत् प्राप्तं तत् करिष्यामि ते हितम् ।
भ्रातुरैश्वर्यसंस्थस्य खरस्य भव पार्श्वतः ॥२८॥
28. asmin kāle tu yat prāptaṃ tat kariṣyāmi te hitam ,
bhrāturaiśvaryasaṃsthasya kharasya bhava pārśvataḥ.
28. asmin kāle tu yat prāptam tat kariṣyāmi te hitam
bhrātuḥ aiśvaryasaṃsthasya kharasya bhava pārśvataḥ
28. asmin kāle tu yat prāptam tat te hitam kariṣyāmi
aiśvaryasaṃsthasya bhrātuḥ kharasya pārśvataḥ bhava
28. Now, at this time, I will do whatever is beneficial for you regarding what has been attained. You should reside beside your brother Khara, who is established in great power.
चतुर्दशानां भ्राता ते सहस्राणां भविष्यति ।
प्रभुः प्रयाणे दाने च राक्षसानां महौजसाम् ॥२९॥
29. caturdaśānāṃ bhrātā te sahasrāṇāṃ bhaviṣyati ,
prabhuḥ prayāṇe dāne ca rākṣasānāṃ mahaujasām.
29. caturdaśānām bhrātā te sahasrāṇām bhaviṣyati
prabhuḥ prayāṇe dāne ca rākṣasānām mahaujasām
29. te bhrātā caturdaśānām sahasrāṇām mahaujasām
rākṣasānām prayāṇe ca dāne prabhuḥ bhaviṣyati
29. Your brother will be the lord of fourteen thousand mighty rākṣasas, (exercising authority) in expeditions and in giving (orders or resources).
तत्र मातृष्वसुः पुत्रो भ्राता तव खरः प्रभुः ।
भविष्यति सदा कुर्वन्यद्वक्ष्यसि वचः स्वयम् ॥३०॥
30. tatra mātṛṣvasuḥ putro bhrātā tava kharaḥ prabhuḥ ,
bhaviṣyati sadā kurvanyadvakṣyasi vacaḥ svayam.
30. tatra mātṛṣvasuḥ putraḥ bhrātā tava kharaḥ prabhuḥ
bhaviṣyati sadā kurvan yat vakṣyasi vacaḥ svayam
30. There, your brother Khara, your maternal aunt's son, will be the lord, always carrying out whatever command you yourself issue.
शीघ्रं गच्छत्वयं शूरो दण्डकान्परिरक्षितुम् ।
दूषणो ऽस्य बलाध्यक्षो भविष्यति महाबलः ॥३१॥
31. śīghraṃ gacchatvayaṃ śūro daṇḍakānparirakṣitum ,
dūṣaṇo'sya balādhyakṣo bhaviṣyati mahābalaḥ.
31. śīghram gacchatu ayam śūraḥ daṇḍakān parirakṣitum
dūṣaṇaḥ asya balādhyakṣaḥ bhaviṣyati mahābalaḥ
31. Let this valiant one go quickly to protect the Daṇḍaka forests. Dūṣaṇa, a greatly powerful warrior, will be his commander of forces.
स हि शप्तो वनोद्देशः क्रुद्धेनोशनसा पुरा ।
राक्षसानामयं वासो भविष्यति न संशयः ॥३२॥
32. sa hi śapto vanoddeśaḥ kruddhenośanasā purā ,
rākṣasānāmayaṃ vāso bhaviṣyati na saṃśayaḥ.
32. sa hi śaptaḥ vanoddeśaḥ kruddhena uśanasā purā
rākṣasānām ayam vāsaḥ bhaviṣyati na saṃśayaḥ
32. Indeed, that forest region was cursed long ago by the angry Uśanas, (who declared): 'This will be the dwelling of rākṣasas.' There is no doubt about it.
एवमुक्त्वा दशग्रीवः सैन्यं तस्यादिदेश ह ।
चतुर्दश सहस्राणि रक्षसां कामरूपिणाम् ॥३३॥
33. evamuktvā daśagrīvaḥ sainyaṃ tasyādideśa ha ,
caturdaśa sahasrāṇi rakṣasāṃ kāmarūpiṇām.
33. evam uktvā daśagrīvaḥ sainyam tasya ādideśa
ha caturdaśa sahasrāṇi rakṣasām kāmarūpiṇām
33. Having spoken thus, Daśagrīva then assigned to him an army of fourteen thousand rākṣasas, who were capable of assuming any form at will.
स तैः सर्वैः परिवृतो राक्षसैर्घोरदर्शनैः ।
खरः संप्रययौ शीघ्रं दण्डकानकुतोभयः ॥३४॥
34. sa taiḥ sarvaiḥ parivṛto rākṣasairghoradarśanaiḥ ,
kharaḥ saṃprayayau śīghraṃ daṇḍakānakutobhayaḥ.

34. Surrounded by all those terrifying-looking demons (rākṣasas), Khara, fearless, swiftly proceeded to the Daṇḍaka forest.
स तत्र कारयामास राज्यं निहतकण्टकम् ।
सा च शूर्पणखा प्रीता न्यवसद्दण्डकावने ॥३५॥
35. sa tatra kārayāmāsa rājyaṃ nihatakaṇṭakam ,
sā ca śūrpaṇakhā prītā nyavasaddaṇḍakāvane.
35. saḥ tatra kārayām āsa rājyam nihatakaṇṭakam
sā ca śūrpaṇakhā prītā nyavasat daṇḍakāvane
35. saḥ tatra nihatakaṇṭakam rājyam kārayām āsa
ca sā prītā śūrpaṇakhā daṇḍakāvane nyavasat
35. He established a kingdom free from obstacles (nihatakaṇṭakam) there, and the pleased Shurpanakha dwelt in the Daṇḍaka forest.
