सीताया वचनं श्रुत्वा परुषं राक्षसाधिपः ।
प्रत्युवाच ततः सीतां विप्रियं प्रियदर्शनाम् ॥१॥

1. Having heard Sita's harsh words, the lord of rākṣasas (Rāvaṇa) then spoke in reply to Sita, who was lovely to behold, with disagreeable words.
यथा यथा सान्त्वयिता वश्यः स्त्रीणां तथा तथा ।
यथा यथा प्रियं वक्ता परिभूतस्तथा तथा ॥२॥
2. yathā yathā sāntvayitā vaśyaḥ strīṇāṃ tathā tathā ,
yathā yathā priyaṃ vaktā paribhūtastathā tathā.

2. The more one is a conciliator to women, the more submissive he becomes to them. The more one speaks pleasant words, the more he becomes despised.
संनियच्छति मे क्रोधं त्वयि कामः समुत्थितः ।
द्रवतो मार्गमासाद्य हयानिव सुसारथिः ॥३॥
3. saṃniyacchati me krodhaṃ tvayi kāmaḥ samutthitaḥ ,
dravato mārgamāsādya hayāniva susārathiḥ.

3. My desire (kāma), which has arisen towards you, restrains my anger, just as a skilled charioteer, while swiftly moving and having mastered the path, controls his horses.
वामः कामो मनुष्याणां यस्मिन् किल निबध्यते ।
जने तस्मिंस्त्वनुक्रोशः स्नेहश्च किल जायते ॥४॥
4. vāmaḥ kāmo manuṣyāṇāṃ yasmin kila nibadhyate ,
jane tasmiṃstvanukrośaḥ snehaśca kila jāyate.

jane tasmin tu anukrośaḥ snehaḥ ca kila jāyate
4. manuṣyāṇām vāmaḥ kāmaḥ yasmin kila nibadhyate,

4. Indeed, when a perverse desire of men is fixed upon someone, compassion and affection truly arise in that person (who is the object of desire).
एतस्मात् कारणान्न तां घतयामि वरानने ।
वधार्हामवमानार्हां मिथ्याप्रव्रजिते रताम् ॥५॥
5. etasmāt kāraṇānna tāṃ ghatayāmi varānane ,
vadhārhāmavamānārhāṃ mithyāpravrajite ratām.
5. etasmāt kāraṇāt na tām ghatayāmi varānane |
vadhārhām avamānārhām mithyāpravrajite ratām
5. varānane,

5. For this reason, O fair-faced one, I do not kill her, even though she is worthy of death, worthy of disgrace, and devoted to a fraudulent ascetic.
परुषाणि हि वाक्यानि यानि यानि ब्रवीषि माम् ।
तेषु तेषु वधो युक्तस्तव मैथिलि दारुणः ॥६॥
6. paruṣāṇi hi vākyāni yāni yāni bravīṣi mām ,
teṣu teṣu vadho yuktastava maithili dāruṇaḥ.

6. maithili,
yāni yāni paruṣāṇi वाक्यानि माम् bravīṣi hi,
teṣu teṣu tava dāruṇaḥ vadhaḥ yuktaḥ
6. Indeed, for each and every one of the harsh words you speak to me, a terrible punishment is fitting for you, O Maithili.
एवमुक्त्वा तु वैदेहीं रावणो राक्षसाधिपः ।
क्रोधसंरम्भसंयुक्तः सीतामुत्तरमब्रवीत् ॥७॥
7. evamuktvā tu vaidehīṃ rāvaṇo rākṣasādhipaḥ ,
krodhasaṃrambhasaṃyuktaḥ sītāmuttaramabravīt.
7. evam uktvā tu vaidehīm rāvaṇaḥ rākṣasādhipaḥ |
krodhasaṃrambhasaṃyuktaḥ sītām uttaram abravīt
7. rāvaṇaḥ rākṣasādhipaḥ,
vaidehīm evam uktvā tu,
krodhasaṃrambhasaṃyuktaḥ (san) sītām uttaram abravīt
7. Having spoken thus to Vaidehi (Sita), Ravana, the lord of the Rākṣasas, filled with furious rage, then replied to Sita.
द्वौ मासौ रक्षितव्यौ मे यो ऽवधिस्ते मया कृतः ।
ततः शयनमारोह मम त्वं वरवर्णिनि ॥८॥
8. dvau māsau rakṣitavyau me yo'vadhiste mayā kṛtaḥ ,
tataḥ śayanamāroha mama tvaṃ varavarṇini.
8. dvau māsau rakṣitavyau me yaḥ avadhiḥ te mayā
kṛtaḥ tataḥ śayanam āroha mama tvam varavarṇini
8. varavarṇini dvau māsau yaḥ avadhiḥ te mayā kṛtaḥ
saḥ me rakṣitavyau tataḥ tvam mama śayanam āroha
8. I shall observe the two months that I have established as a time limit for you. After that, O lady of exquisite complexion, you must ascend my bed.
द्वाभ्यामूर्ध्वं तु मासाभ्यां भर्तारं मामनिच्छतीम् ।
मम त्वां प्रातराशार्थमारभन्ते महानसे ॥९॥
9. dvābhyāmūrdhvaṃ tu māsābhyāṃ bhartāraṃ māmanicchatīm ,
mama tvāṃ prātarāśārthamārabhante mahānase.
9. dvābhyām ūrdhvam tu māsābhyām bhartāram mām anicchatīm
mama tvām prātarāśārtham ārabhande mahānase
9. tu dvābhyām māsābhyām ūrdhvam bhartāram mām anicchatīm

9. Indeed, after two months, if you are unwilling to accept me as your husband, they will begin to prepare you in the kitchen for my morning meal.
तां तर्ज्यमानां संप्रेक्ष्य राक्षसेन्द्रेण जानकीम् ।
देवगन्धर्वकन्यास्ता विषेदुर्विपुलेक्षणाः ॥१०॥
10. tāṃ tarjyamānāṃ saṃprekṣya rākṣasendreṇa jānakīm ,
devagandharvakanyāstā viṣedurvipulekṣaṇāḥ.
10. tām tarjyamānām samprekṣya rākṣasendreṇa jānakīm
devagandharvakanyāḥ tāḥ viṣeduḥ vipulekṣaṇāḥ
10. rākṣasendreṇa tarjyamānām tām jānakīm samprekṣya
tāḥ devagandharvakanyāḥ vipulekṣaṇāḥ viṣeduḥ
10. Having seen Jānakī being threatened by the king of the rākṣasas, those goddesses and gandharva maidens with large eyes became distressed.
ओष्ठप्रकारैरपरा नेत्रवक्त्रैस्तथापराः ।
सीतामाश्वासयामासुस्तर्जितां तेन रक्षसा ॥११॥
11. oṣṭhaprakārairaparā netravaktraistathāparāḥ ,
sītāmāśvāsayāmāsustarjitāṃ tena rakṣasā.
11. oṣṭhaprakāraiḥ aparā netravaktraiḥ tathā aparāḥ
sītām āśvāsayāmāsuḥ tarjitām tena rakṣasā
11. aparā oṣṭhaprakāraiḥ tathā aparāḥ netravaktraiḥ
tena rakṣasā tarjitām sītām āśvāsayāmāsuḥ
11. Some among them consoled her with gestures of their lips, while others used their eyes and faces, all comforting Sītā, who had been threatened by that rākṣasa.
ताभिराश्वासिता सीता रावणं राक्षसाधिपम् ।
उवाचात्महितं वाक्यं वृत्तशौण्डीर्यगर्वितम् ॥१२॥
12. tābhirāśvāsitā sītā rāvaṇaṃ rākṣasādhipam ,
uvācātmahitaṃ vākyaṃ vṛttaśauṇḍīryagarvitam.
12. tābhiḥ āśvāsitā sītā rāvaṇam rākṣasādhipam
uvāca ātmahitam vākyam vṛttaśauṇḍīryagarvitam
12. Comforted by them, Sītā spoke to Rāvaṇa, the lord of the rākṣasas, words beneficial to her own welfare and imbued with pride in her noble character.
नूनं न ते जनः कश्चिदसिन्निःश्रेयसे स्थितः ।
निवारयति यो न त्वां कर्मणो ऽस्माद्विगर्हितात् ॥१३॥
13. nūnaṃ na te janaḥ kaścidasinniḥśreyase sthitaḥ ,
nivārayati yo na tvāṃ karmaṇo'smādvigarhitāt.
13. nūnam na te janaḥ kaścit asmin niḥśreyase sthitaḥ
yaḥ na tvām karmaṇaḥ asmāt vigarhitāt nivārayati
13. Certainly, there is no one among your people (jana) who is established in ultimate welfare (niḥśreyasa) and who restrains you from this reprehensible deed (karma).
मां हि धर्मात्मनः पत्नीं शचीमिव शचीपतेः ।
त्वदन्यस्त्रिषु लोकेषु प्रार्थयेन्मनसापि कः ॥१४॥
14. māṃ hi dharmātmanaḥ patnīṃ śacīmiva śacīpateḥ ,
tvadanyastriṣu lokeṣu prārthayenmanasāpi kaḥ.
14. mām hi dharmātmanaḥ patnīm śacīm iva śacīpateḥ
tvat anyaḥ triṣu lokeṣu prārthayet manasā api kaḥ
14. Indeed, who else in the three worlds, apart from you, would desire me - the wife of a righteous person (dharmātman) - even in his mind, just as Śacī is exclusively desired by Śacīpati?
राक्षसाधम रामस्य भार्याममिततेजसः ।
उक्तवानसि यत् पापं क्व गतस्तस्य मोक्ष्यसे ॥१५॥
15. rākṣasādhama rāmasya bhāryāmamitatejasaḥ ,
uktavānasi yat pāpaṃ kva gatastasya mokṣyase.
15. rākṣasādhama rāmasya bhāryām amitatejasaḥ
uktavān asi yat pāpam kva gataḥ tasya mokṣyase
15. O lowest of rākṣasas! Having uttered that sinful speech (pāpa) against the wife of Rāma, who possesses immeasurable splendor (tejas), where will you go to escape its consequences?
यथा दृप्तश्च मातङ्गः शशश्च सहितौ वने ।
तथा द्विरदवद् रामस्त्वं नीच शशवत् स्मृतः ॥१६॥
16. yathā dṛptaśca mātaṅgaḥ śaśaśca sahitau vane ,
tathā dviradavad rāmastvaṃ nīca śaśavat smṛtaḥ.
16. yathā dṛptaḥ ca mātaṅgaḥ śaśaḥ ca sahitau vane
tathā dviradavat rāmaḥ tvam nīca śaśavat smṛtaḥ
16. yathā dṛptaḥ ca mātaṅgaḥ ca śaśaḥ vane sahitau,
tathā rāmaḥ dviradavat,
tvam nīca śaśavat smṛtaḥ
16. Just as a proud elephant and a hare might be together in a forest, so too, Rāma is like an elephant, and you, vile one, are considered like a hare.
स त्वमिक्ष्वाकुनाथं वै क्षिपन्निह न लज्जसे ।
चक्षुषो विषयं तस्य न तावदुपगच्छसि ॥१७॥
17. sa tvamikṣvākunāthaṃ vai kṣipanniha na lajjase ,
cakṣuṣo viṣayaṃ tasya na tāvadupagacchasi.
17. saḥ tvam ikṣvākūnātham vai kṣipan iha na lajjase
cakṣuṣaḥ viṣayam tasya na tāvat upagacchasi
17. saḥ tvam iha ikṣvākūnātham kṣipan vai na lajjase.
tasya cakṣuṣaḥ viṣayam tāvat na upagacchasi.
17. You, being such a one, are not ashamed to revile the lord of Ikṣvāku (Rāma) here, when you cannot even approach the range of his sight.
इमे ते नयने क्रूरे विरूपे कृष्णपिङ्गले ।
क्षितौ न पतिते कस्मान्मामनार्यनिरीक्षितः ॥१८॥
18. ime te nayane krūre virūpe kṛṣṇapiṅgale ,
kṣitau na patite kasmānmāmanāryanirīkṣitaḥ.
18. ime te nayane krūre virūpe kṛṣṇapiṅgale
kṣitau na patite kasmāt mām anārya nirīkṣitaḥ
18. he anārya,
mām nirīkṣitaḥ te ime krūre virūpe kṛṣṇapiṅgale nayane kasmāt kṣitau na patite?
18. O ignoble (anārya) one, why have these cruel, hideous, black-yellowish eyes of yours not fallen to the ground, after you have gazed upon me?
तस्य धर्मात्मनः पत्नीं स्नुषां दशरथस्य च ।
कथं व्याहरतो मां ते न जिह्वा पाप शीर्यते ॥१९॥
19. tasya dharmātmanaḥ patnīṃ snuṣāṃ daśarathasya ca ,
kathaṃ vyāharato māṃ te na jihvā pāpa śīryate.
19. tasya dharmātmanaḥ patnīm snuṣām daśarathasya ca
katham vyāharataḥ mām te na jihvā pāpa śīryate
19. he pāpa,
tasya dharmātmanaḥ daśarathasya ca snuṣām patnīm mām vyāharataḥ te jihvā katham na śīryate?
19. O sinful one, how is it that your tongue does not split as you speak to me, the wife of that righteous-souled (dharma) Rāma and the daughter-in-law of Daśaratha?
असंदेशात्तु रामस्य तपसश्चानुपालनात् ।
न त्वां कुर्मि दशग्रीव भस्म भस्मार्हतेजसा ॥२०॥
20. asaṃdeśāttu rāmasya tapasaścānupālanāt ,
na tvāṃ kurmi daśagrīva bhasma bhasmārhatejasā.
20. asaṃdeśāt tu rāmasya tapasaḥ ca anupālanāt na
tvām kurmi daśagrīva bhasma bhasmārhatejasā
20. rāmasya asaṃdeśāt tu tapasaḥ ca anupālanāt
tvām daśagrīva bhasmārhatejasā bhasma na kurmi
20. Indeed, because of Rama's explicit command and my observance of asceticism (tapas), I do not reduce you, O Daśagrīva, to ashes with a power capable of burning one to ashes.
नापहर्तुमहं शक्या तस्य रामस्य धीमतः ।
विधिस्तव वधार्थाय विहितो नात्र संशयः ॥२१॥
21. nāpahartumahaṃ śakyā tasya rāmasya dhīmataḥ ,
vidhistava vadhārthāya vihito nātra saṃśayaḥ.
21. na apahartum aham śakyā tasya rāmasya dhīmataḥ
vidhiḥ tava vadhārthāya vihitaḥ na atra saṃśayaḥ
21. aham tasya dhīmataḥ rāmasya apahartum na śakyā
tava vadhārthāya vidhiḥ vihitaḥ atra saṃśayaḥ na
21. I cannot be abducted from that wise Rama. Indeed, destiny has been ordained for your destruction; there is no doubt about this.
शूरेण धनदभ्राता बलैः समुदितेन च ।
अपोह्य रामं कस्माद्धि दारचौर्यं त्वया कृतम् ॥२२॥
22. śūreṇa dhanadabhrātā balaiḥ samuditena ca ,
apohya rāmaṃ kasmāddhi dāracauryaṃ tvayā kṛtam.
22. śūreṇa dhanadabhrātā balaiḥ samuditena ca
apohya rāmam kasmāt hi dāracauryaṃ tvayā kṛtam
22. dhanadabhrātā śūreṇa ca balaiḥ samuditena
tvayā rāmam apohya kasmāt hi dāracauryaṃ kṛtam
22. O brother of Kubera, you who are valiant and mighty with your forces, why indeed have you committed the abduction of a wife, having kept Rama away?
सीताया वचनं श्रुत्वा रावणो राक्षसाधिपः ।
विवृत्य नयने क्रूरे जानकीमन्ववैक्षत ॥२३॥
23. sītāyā vacanaṃ śrutvā rāvaṇo rākṣasādhipaḥ ,
vivṛtya nayane krūre jānakīmanvavaikṣata.
23. sītāyāḥ vacanam śrutvā rāvaṇaḥ rākṣasādhipaḥ
vivṛtya nayane krūre jānakīm anvavaikṣata
23. sītāyāḥ vacanam śrutvā rākṣasādhipaḥ rāvaṇaḥ

23. Having heard Sita's words, Ravana, the king of the rākṣasas, opened his cruel eyes and looked at Janaki.
नीलजीमूतसंकाशो महाभुजशिरोधरः ।
सिंहसत्त्वगतिः श्रीमान्दीप्तजिह्वोग्रलोचनः ॥२४॥
24. nīlajīmūtasaṃkāśo mahābhujaśirodharaḥ ,
siṃhasattvagatiḥ śrīmāndīptajihvogralocanaḥ.
24. nīlajīmūtasaṃkāśaḥ mahābhujaśirodharaḥ
siṃhasattvagatiḥ śrīmān dīptajihvaḥ ugralocanaḥ
24. nīlajīmūtasaṃkāśaḥ mahābhujaśirodharaḥ

24. He was like a dark blue cloud, possessing mighty arms and a prominent head/neck, with the powerful gait of a lion, glorious, and having a glowing tongue and fierce eyes.
चलाग्रमकुटः प्रांशुश्चित्रमाल्यानुलेपनः ।
रक्तमाल्याम्बरधरस्तप्ताङ्गदविभूषणः ॥२५॥
25. calāgramakuṭaḥ prāṃśuścitramālyānulepanaḥ ,
raktamālyāmbaradharastaptāṅgadavibhūṣaṇaḥ.
25. calāgramakuṭaḥ prāṃśuḥ citramālyānulepanaḥ
raktamālyāmbaradharaḥ taptāṅgadavibhūṣaṇaḥ

25. With a quivering crown-tip, tall, adorned with colorful garlands and unguents, wearing red garlands and garments, and decorated with shining armlets.
श्रोणीसूत्रेण महता मेककेन सुसंवृतः ।
अमृतोत्पादनद्धेन भुजंगेनेव मन्दरः ॥२६॥
26. śroṇīsūtreṇa mahatā mekakena susaṃvṛtaḥ ,
amṛtotpādanaddhena bhujaṃgeneva mandaraḥ.
26. śroṇīsūtreṇa mahatā mekakena susaṃvṛtaḥ
amṛtotpādanaddhena bhujaṅgena iva mandaraḥ

26. He was well-bound by a single, mighty waist-chain, just as Mount Mandara was bound by a serpent for the production of nectar (amṛta).
तरुणादित्यवर्णाभ्यां कुण्डलाभ्यां विभूषितः ।
रक्तपल्लवपुष्पाभ्यामशोकाभ्यामिवाचलः ॥२७॥
27. taruṇādityavarṇābhyāṃ kuṇḍalābhyāṃ vibhūṣitaḥ ,
raktapallavapuṣpābhyāmaśokābhyāmivācalaḥ.
27. taruṇādityavarṇābhyām kuṇḍalābhyām vibhūṣitaḥ
raktapallavapuṣpābhyām aśokābhyām iva acalaḥ

27. He was adorned with two earrings shining like the morning sun, resembling a mountain adorned with two Aśoka trees bearing red sprouts and flowers.
अवेक्षमाणो वैदेहीं कोपसंरक्तलोचनः ।
उवाच रावणः सीतां भुजंग इव निःश्वसन् ॥२८॥
28. avekṣamāṇo vaidehīṃ kopasaṃraktalocanaḥ ,
uvāca rāvaṇaḥ sītāṃ bhujaṃga iva niḥśvasan.
28. avekṣamāṇaḥ vaidehīm kopasaṃraktalocanaḥ
uvāca rāvaṇaḥ sītām bhujaṅgaḥ iva niḥśvasan
28. kopasaṃraktalocanaḥ rāvaṇaḥ vaidehīm
avekṣamāṇaḥ bhujaṅgaḥ iva niḥśvasan sītām uvāca
28. With eyes reddened by anger, Ravana, looking at Vaidehi (Sita), spoke to Sita, hissing like a snake.
अनयेनाभिसंपन्नमर्थहीनमनुव्रते ।
नाशयाम्यहमद्य त्वां सूर्यः संध्यामिवौजसा ॥२९॥
29. anayenābhisaṃpannamarthahīnamanuvrate ,
nāśayāmyahamadya tvāṃ sūryaḥ saṃdhyāmivaujasā.
29. anayena abhisaṃpannam arthahīnam anuvrate
nāśayāmi aham adya tvām sūryaḥ sandhyām iva ojasā
29. anayena abhisaṃpannam arthahīnam anuvrate tvām
aham adya sūryaḥ sandhyām iva ojasā nāśayāmi
29. O you who adhere to a path (dharma) full of misconduct and devoid of meaning, I will destroy you today, just as the sun obliterates the twilight (sandhyā) with its power.
इत्युक्त्वा मैथिलीं राजा रावणः शत्रुरावणः ।
संदिदेश ततः सर्वा राक्षसीर्घोरदर्शनाः ॥३०॥
30. ityuktvā maithilīṃ rājā rāvaṇaḥ śatrurāvaṇaḥ ,
saṃdideśa tataḥ sarvā rākṣasīrghoradarśanāḥ.
30. iti uktvā maithilīm rājā rāvaṇaḥ śatrurāvaṇaḥ
saṃdideśa tataḥ sarvāḥ rākṣasīḥ ghoradarśanāḥ
30. iti maithilīm uktvā śatrurāvaṇaḥ rājā rāvaṇaḥ
tataḥ sarvāḥ ghoradarśanāḥ rākṣasīḥ saṃdideśa
30. Having thus spoken to Maithili (Sita), King Ravana, who was a terror to his enemies, then commanded all the ogresses (rākṣasī) of terrifying appearance.
एकाक्षीमेककर्णां च कर्णप्रावरणां तथा ।
गोकर्णीं हस्तिकर्णीं च लम्बकर्णीमकर्णिकाम् ॥३१॥
31. ekākṣīmekakarṇāṃ ca karṇaprāvaraṇāṃ tathā ,
gokarṇīṃ hastikarṇīṃ ca lambakarṇīmakarṇikām.
31. ekākṣīm ekakarṇām ca karṇaprāvaraṇām tathā
gokarṇīm hastikarṇīm ca lambakarṇīm akarṇikām
31. ekākṣīm ekakarṇām ca karṇaprāvaraṇām tathā
gokarṇīm hastikarṇīm ca lambakarṇīm akarṇikām
31. (He commanded ogresses who were) one-eyed, one-eared, and also those whose ears served as coverings, those with cow-like ears, those with elephant-like ears, those with pendulous ears, and those who were earless.
हस्तिपद्य श्वपद्यौ च गोपदीं पादचूलिकाम् ।
एकाक्षीमेकपादीं च पृथुपादीमपादिकाम् ॥३२॥
32. hastipadya śvapadyau ca gopadīṃ pādacūlikām ,

32. Some (Rākṣasīs) have elephant-like feet, two have dog-like feet; others have cow-like feet, peculiar (crest-like) feet, are one-eyed, one-footed, broad-footed, and footless.
अतिमात्रशिरोग्रीवामतिमात्रकुचोदरीम् ।
अतिमात्रास्यनेत्रां च दीर्घजिह्वामजिह्विकाम् ।
अनासिकां सिंहमुखीं गोमुखीं सूकरीमुखीम् ॥३३॥
33. atimātraśirogrīvāmatimātrakucodarīm ,
atimātrāsyanetrāṃ ca dīrghajihvāmajihvikām ,
anāsikāṃ siṃhamukhīṃ gomukhīṃ sūkarīmukhīm.

33. Some (Rākṣasīs) have excessively large heads and necks, some excessively large breasts and bellies, and excessively large mouths and eyes; some are long-tongued, others tongueless, noseless, lion-faced, cow-faced, and sow-faced.
यथा मद्वशगा सीता क्षिप्रं भवति जानकी ।
तथा कुरुत राक्षस्यः सर्वाः क्षिप्रं समेत्य च ॥३४॥
34. yathā madvaśagā sītā kṣipraṃ bhavati jānakī ,
tathā kuruta rākṣasyaḥ sarvāḥ kṣipraṃ sametya ca.

tathā kuruta rākṣasyaḥ sarvāḥ kṣipram sametya ca

34. Just as Sītā, Janaka's daughter, quickly becomes subservient to me, so too, all you Rākṣasīs, quickly come together and make it so.
प्रतिलोमानुलोमैश्च सामदानादिभेदनैः ।
आवर्तयत वैदेहीं दण्डस्योद्यमनेन च ॥३५॥
35. pratilomānulomaiśca sāmadānādibhedanaiḥ ,
āvartayata vaidehīṃ daṇḍasyodyamanena ca.

āvartayata vaidehīm daṇḍasya udyamanena ca

35. You (Rākṣasīs) should bring Vaidehī to submission by both favorable and unfavorable approaches, and by methods like conciliation, gifts, division, and others, as well as by the threat of punishment.
इति प्रतिसमादिश्य राक्षसेन्द्रः पुनः पुनः ।
काममन्युपरीतात्मा जानकीं पर्यतर्जयत् ॥३६॥
36. iti pratisamādiśya rākṣasendraḥ punaḥ punaḥ ,
kāmamanyuparītātmā jānakīṃ paryatarjayat.

36. Having thus repeatedly instructed (his demonesses), the lord of rākṣasas (Rāvaṇa), whose mind was filled with lust and anger, threatened Sītā.
उपगम्य ततः क्षिप्रं राक्षसी धान्यमालिनी ।
परिष्वज्य दशग्रीवमिदं वचनमब्रवीत् ॥३७॥
37. upagamya tataḥ kṣipraṃ rākṣasī dhānyamālinī ,
pariṣvajya daśagrīvamidaṃ vacanamabravīt.

pariṣvajya daśagrīvam idam vacanam abravīt

37. Then, quickly approaching, the demoness Dhānyamālinī, having embraced Rāvaṇa (Daśagrīva), spoke these words.
मया क्रीड महाराजसीतया किं तवानया ।
अकामां कामयानस्य शरीरमुपतप्यते ।
इच्छन्तीं कामयानस्य प्रीतिर्भवति शोभना ॥३८॥
38. mayā krīḍa mahārājasītayā kiṃ tavānayā ,
akāmāṃ kāmayānasya śarīramupatapyate ,
icchantīṃ kāmayānasya prītirbhavati śobhanā.

śarīram upatapyate icchantīm

38. O great king, play with me! What is the use of this Sītā to you? The body of one desiring an unwilling woman is afflicted. But for one desiring a willing woman, excellent pleasure arises.
एवमुक्तस्तु राक्षस्या समुत्क्षिप्तस्ततो बली ।
ज्वलद्भास्करवर्णाभं प्रविवेश निवेशनम् ॥३९॥
39. evamuktastu rākṣasyā samutkṣiptastato balī ,
jvaladbhāskaravarṇābhaṃ praviveśa niveśanam.
39. evam uktaḥ tu rākṣasyā samutkṣiptaḥ tataḥ balī
jvaladbhāskaravarṇābham praviveśa niveśanam

39. Thus addressed by the demoness, the powerful (Rāvaṇa) was then lifted up (by her). He entered his dwelling, which shone with the luster of the blazing sun.
देवगन्धर्वकन्याश्च नागकन्याश्च तास्ततः ।
परिवार्य दशग्रीवं विविशुस्तद्गृहोत्तमम् ॥४०॥
40. devagandharvakanyāśca nāgakanyāśca tāstataḥ ,
parivārya daśagrīvaṃ viviśustadgṛhottamam.
40. deva-gandharva-kanyāḥ ca nāga-kanyāḥ ca tāḥ
tataḥ parivārya daśagrīvam viviśuḥ tat gṛhottamam
40. tataḥ tāḥ deva-gandharva-kanyāḥ ca nāga-kanyāḥ
ca daśagrīvam parivārya tat gṛhottamam viviśuḥ
40. Then, those daughters of gods, gandharvas, and nāgas, having surrounded Dashagriva, entered his magnificent palace.
स मैथिलीं धर्मपरामवस्थितां प्रवेपमानां परिभर्त्स्य रावणः ।
विहाय सीतां मदनेन मोहितः स्वमेव वेश्म प्रविवेश भास्वरम् ॥४१॥
41. sa maithilīṃ dharmaparāmavasthitāṃ pravepamānāṃ paribhartsya rāvaṇaḥ ,
vihāya sītāṃ madanena mohitaḥ svameva veśma praviveśa bhāsvaram.

41. Having rebuked Maithili (Sita), who was resolute in her natural law (dharma) and trembling, Ravana, infatuated by lust, abandoned her and entered his own resplendent palace.
