ततः पञ्चवटीं गत्वा नानाव्यालमृगायुताम् ।
उवाच भ्रातरं रामो लक्ष्मणं दीप्ततेजसं ॥१॥

1. Then, having reached Pañcavaṭī, which was filled with various fierce animals and deer, Rāma spoke to his brother Lakṣmaṇa, who possessed radiant splendor.
आगताः स्म यथोद्दिष्टममुं देशं महर्षिणा ।
अयं पञ्चवटी देशः सौम्य पुष्पितकाननः ॥२॥
2. āgatāḥ sma yathoddiṣṭamamuṃ deśaṃ maharṣiṇā ,
ayaṃ pañcavaṭī deśaḥ saumya puṣpitakānanaḥ.

2. "We have arrived at this region, just as it was indicated by the great sage. O gentle one, this region of Pañcavaṭī has blossoming groves."
सर्वतश्चार्यतां दृष्टिः कानने निपुणो ह्यसि ।
आश्रमः कतरस्मिन्नो देशे भवति संमतः ॥३॥
3. sarvataścāryatāṃ dṛṣṭiḥ kānane nipuṇo hyasi ,
āśramaḥ katarasminno deśe bhavati saṃmataḥ.
3. sarvataḥ cāryatām dṛṣṭiḥ kānane nipuṇaḥ hi asi
| āśramaḥ katarasmin naḥ deśe bhavati saṃmataḥ

3. Direct your gaze everywhere, for you are skilled in the forest. In which region do you think a suitable hermitage (āśrama) would be for us?
रमते यत्र वैदेही त्वमहं चैव लक्ष्मण ।
तादृशो दृश्यतां देशः संनिकृष्टजलाशयः ॥४॥
4. ramate yatra vaidehī tvamahaṃ caiva lakṣmaṇa ,
tādṛśo dṛśyatāṃ deśaḥ saṃnikṛṣṭajalāśayaḥ.

4. Lakshmana, may a region be found where Vaidehī (Sita), you, and I can dwell pleasantly, a place near a body of water.
वनरामण्यकं यत्र जलरामण्यकं तथा ।
संनिकृष्टं च यत्र स्यात् समित्पुष्पकुशोदकम् ॥५॥
5. vanarāmaṇyakaṃ yatra jalarāmaṇyakaṃ tathā ,
saṃnikṛṣṭaṃ ca yatra syāt samitpuṣpakuśodakam.
5. vana-rāmaṇyakam yatra jala-rāmaṇyakam tathā |
saṃnikṛṣṭam ca yatra syāt samit-puṣpa-kuśa-udakam
5. yatra vana-rāmaṇyakam tathā jala-rāmaṇyakam (syāt)
ca yatra samit-puṣpa-kuśa-udakam saṃnikṛṣṭam syāt
5. And where there is the beauty of the forest and the beauty of water, and where fuel (samit), flowers, kusha grass, and water are readily available.
एवमुक्तस्तु रामेण लक्मणः संयताञ्जलिः ।
सीता समक्षं काकुत्स्थमिदं वचनमब्रवीत् ॥६॥
6. evamuktastu rāmeṇa lakmaṇaḥ saṃyatāñjaliḥ ,
sītā samakṣaṃ kākutsthamidaṃ vacanamabravīt.
6. evam uktaḥ tu rāmeṇa lakṣmaṇaḥ saṃyata-añjaliḥ
| sītā samakṣam kākutstham idam vacanam abravīt
6. tu evam rāmeṇa uktaḥ lakṣmaṇaḥ saṃyata-añjaliḥ
sītā samakṣam kākutstham idam vacanam abravīt
6. Thus addressed by Rama, Lakshmana, with folded hands (saṃyatāñjali), spoke these words to Kakutstha (Rama) in Sita's presence.
परवानस्मि काकुत्स्थ त्वयि वर्षशतं स्थिते ।
स्वयं तु रुचिरे देशे क्रियतामिति मां वद ॥७॥
7. paravānasmi kākutstha tvayi varṣaśataṃ sthite ,
svayaṃ tu rucire deśe kriyatāmiti māṃ vada.
7. paravān asmi kākutstha tvayi varṣaśataṃ sthite
svayam tu rucire deśe kriyatām iti mām vada
7. kākutstha tvayi varṣaśataṃ sthite paravān asmi

7. O Rama (Kakutstha), I am fully at your service, even if you were to remain here for a hundred years. Therefore, please choose a beautiful place yourself and then instruct me, saying, 'Let it be done (here).'
सुप्रीतस्तेन वाक्येन लक्ष्मणस्य महाद्युतिः ।
विमृशन् रोचयामास देशं सर्वगुणान्वितम् ॥८॥
8. suprītastena vākyena lakṣmaṇasya mahādyutiḥ ,
vimṛśan rocayāmāsa deśaṃ sarvaguṇānvitam.
8. suprītaḥ tena vākyena lakṣmaṇasya mahādyutiḥ
vimṛśan rocayāmāsa deśam sarvaguṇānvitam
8. mahādyutiḥ lakṣmaṇasya tena vākyena suprītaḥ

8. The immensely radiant Rama, greatly pleased by Lakshmana's words, deliberated and then selected a spot endowed with all excellent qualities.
स तं रुचिरमाक्रम्य देशमाश्रमकर्मणि ।
हस्ते गृहीत्वा हस्तेन रामः सौमित्रिमब्रवीत् ॥९॥
9. sa taṃ ruciramākramya deśamāśramakarmaṇi ,
haste gṛhītvā hastena rāmaḥ saumitrimabravīt.
9. saḥ tam ruciram ākramya deśam āśramakarmaṇi
haste gṛhītvā hastena rāmaḥ saumitrim abravīt
9. saḥ rāmaḥ tam ruciram deśam āśramakarmaṇi

9. Rama, having taken possession of that beautiful place for establishing an ashram, and holding Lakshmana's hand, spoke to him.
अयं देशः समः श्रीमान्पुष्पितैर् तरुभिर्वृतः ।
इहाश्रमपदं सौम्य यथावत् कर्तुमर्हसि ॥१०॥
10. ayaṃ deśaḥ samaḥ śrīmānpuṣpitair tarubhirvṛtaḥ ,
ihāśramapadaṃ saumya yathāvat kartumarhasi.
10. ayam deśaḥ samaḥ śrīmān puṣpitaiḥ tarubhiḥ vṛtaḥ
iha āśramapadam saumya yathāvat kartum arhasi
10. saumya ayam deśaḥ samaḥ śrīmān puṣpitaiḥ tarubhiḥ
vṛtaḥ iha yathāvat āśramapadam kartum arhasi
10. This place is level, glorious, and surrounded by flowering trees. O gentle Lakshmana, you ought to establish an ashram (āśrama) site here properly.
इयमादित्यसंकाशैः पद्मैः सुरभिगन्धिभिः ।
अदूरे दृश्यते रम्या पद्मिनी पद्मशोभिता ॥११॥
11. iyamādityasaṃkāśaiḥ padmaiḥ surabhigandhibhiḥ ,
adūre dṛśyate ramyā padminī padmaśobhitā.
11. iyam ādityasaṃkāśaiḥ padmaiḥ surabhigandhibhiḥ
adūre dṛśyate ramyā padminī padmaśobhitā
11. iyam ramyā padminī ādityasaṃkāśaiḥ
surabhigandhibhiḥ padmaiḥ padmaśobhitā adūre dṛśyate
11. Nearby, this charming lotus pond (padminī) is visible, adorned with lotuses (padmaiḥ) that gleam like the sun and possess a sweet fragrance.
यथाख्यातमगस्त्येन मुनिना भावितात्मना ।
इयं गोदावरी रम्या पुष्पितैस्तरुभिर्वृता ॥१२॥
12. yathākhyātamagastyena muninā bhāvitātmanā ,
iyaṃ godāvarī ramyā puṣpitaistarubhirvṛtā.
12. yathā ākhyātam agastyena muninā bhāvitātmanā
iyam godāvarī ramyā puṣpitaiḥ tarubhiḥ vṛtā
12. yathā bhāvitātmanā muninā agastyena ākhyātam,
iyam ramyā godāvarī puṣpitaiḥ tarubhiḥ vṛtā
12. As described by the sage Agastya, who possesses a purified self (ātman), this charming Godavari river is surrounded by flowering trees.
हंसकारण्डवाकीर्णा चक्रवाकोपशोभिता ।
नातिदूरे न चासन्ने मृगयूथनिपीडिता ॥१३॥
13. haṃsakāraṇḍavākīrṇā cakravākopaśobhitā ,
nātidūre na cāsanne mṛgayūthanipīḍitā.
13. haṃsakāraṇḍavākīrṇā cakravākopaśobhitā na
atidūre na ca āsanne mṛgayūthanipīḍitā
13. (sā) haṃsakāraṇḍavākīrṇā cakravākopaśobhitā
mṛgayūthanipīḍitā na atidūre na ca āsanne
13. This [river] is teeming with geese and ruddy sheldrakes, adorned by ruddy geese. Frequented by herds of deer, it is located neither too far nor too close.
मयूरनादिता रम्याः प्रांशवो बहुकन्दराः ।
दृश्यन्ते गिरयः सौम्य फुल्लैस्तरुभिरावृताः ॥१४॥
14. mayūranāditā ramyāḥ prāṃśavo bahukandarāḥ ,
dṛśyante girayaḥ saumya phullaistarubhirāvṛtāḥ.
14. mayūranāditāḥ ramyāḥ prāṃśavaḥ bahukandarāḥ
dṛśyante girayaḥ saumya phullaiḥ tarubhiḥ āvṛtāḥ
14. saumya! mayūranāditāḥ ramyāḥ prāṃśavaḥ bahukandarāḥ
phullaiḥ tarubhiḥ āvṛtāḥ girayaḥ dṛśyante
14. O gentle one, these lovely, towering mountains are visible, resounding with peacock calls, possessing many caves, and covered with blossoming trees.
सौवर्णे राजतैस्ताम्रैर्देशे देशे च धातुभिः ।
गवाक्षिता इवाभान्ति गजाः परमभक्तिभिः ॥१५॥
15. sauvarṇe rājataistāmrairdeśe deśe ca dhātubhiḥ ,
gavākṣitā ivābhānti gajāḥ paramabhaktibhiḥ.
15. sauvarṇe rājataiḥ tāmraiḥ deśe deśe ca dhātubhiḥ
gavākṣitāḥ iva ābhānti gajāḥ paramabhaktibhiḥ
15. gajāḥ sauvarṇe rājataiḥ tāmraiḥ ca dhātubhiḥ deśe
deśe gavākṣitāḥ iva paramabhaktibhiḥ ābhānti
15. The elephants, with their supreme splendor (bhakti), gleam as if they were made of lattice-work, adorned in various parts with gold, silver, copper, and other metals.
सालैस्तालैस्तमालैश्च खर्जूरैः पनसाम्रकैः ।
नीवारैस्तिमिशैश्चैव पुंनागैश्चोपशोभिताः ॥१६॥
16. sālaistālaistamālaiśca kharjūraiḥ panasāmrakaiḥ ,
nīvāraistimiśaiścaiva puṃnāgaiścopaśobhitāḥ.
16. sālaiḥ tālaiḥ tamālaiḥ ca kharjūraiḥ panasāmrakaiḥ
nīvāraiḥ timiśaiḥ ca eva punnāgaiḥ ca upaśobhitāḥ
16. sālaiḥ tālaiḥ tamālaiḥ ca kharjūraiḥ panasāmrakaiḥ
nīvāraiḥ timiśaiḥ ca eva punnāgaiḥ ca upaśobhitāḥ
16. They were adorned and beautified with Sal trees, Fan-palm trees, Tamala trees, and date palms; with jackfruit and mango trees; with wild rice, Timisha trees, and Punnaga trees.
चूतैरशोकैस्तिलकैश्चम्पकैः केतकैरपि ।
पुष्पगुल्मलतोपेतैस्तैस्तैस्तरुभिरावृताः ॥१७॥
17. cūtairaśokaistilakaiścampakaiḥ ketakairapi ,
puṣpagulmalatopetaistaistaistarubhirāvṛtāḥ.
17. cūtaiḥ aśokaiḥ tilakaiḥ campakaiḥ ketakaiḥ api
puṣpagulmalatopetaiḥ taiḥ taiḥ tarubhiḥ āvṛtāḥ
17. cūtaiḥ aśokaiḥ tilakaiḥ campakaiḥ ketakaiḥ api
puṣpagulmalatopetaiḥ taiḥ taiḥ tarubhiḥ āvṛtāḥ
17. They are also surrounded by mango, Ashoka, Tilaka, Champaka, and Ketaka trees, and by various other trees abundant with flowering bushes and creepers.
चन्दनैः स्यन्दनैर्नीपैः पनसैर्लकुचैरपि ।
धवाश्वकर्णखदिरैः शमीकिंशुकपाटलैः ॥१८॥
18. candanaiḥ syandanairnīpaiḥ panasairlakucairapi ,
dhavāśvakarṇakhadiraiḥ śamīkiṃśukapāṭalaiḥ.
18. candanaiḥ syandanaiḥ nīpaiḥ panasaiḥ lakucaiḥ
api dhavāśvakarṇakhadiraiḥ śamīkiṃśukapāṭalaiḥ
18. candanaiḥ syandanaiḥ nīpaiḥ panasaiḥ lakucaiḥ
api dhavāśvakarṇakhadiraiḥ śamīkiṃśukapāṭalaiḥ
18. Also, they are adorned with sandalwood trees, Syandana trees, Nipa trees, jackfruit trees, and Lakucha trees; along with Dhava, Ashwakarna, Khadira, Shami, Kimshuka, and Patala trees.
इदं पुण्यमिदं मेध्यमिदं बहुमृगद्विजम् ।
इह वत्स्याम सौमित्रे सार्धमेतेन पक्षिणा ॥१९॥
19. idaṃ puṇyamidaṃ medhyamidaṃ bahumṛgadvijam ,
iha vatsyāma saumitre sārdhametena pakṣiṇā.
19. idam puṇyam idam medhyam idam bahumṛgadvijam
iha vatsyāma saumitre sārdham etena pakṣiṇā
19. saumitre idam puṇyam idam medhyam idam
bahumṛgadvijam iha etena pakṣiṇā sārdham vatsyāma
19. This place is sacred and pure, abundant with many deer and birds. Here, O Saumitra, we shall dwell along with this bird.
एवमुक्तस्तु रामेण लक्ष्मणः परवीरहा ।
अचिरेणाश्रमं भ्रातुश्चकार सुमहाबलः ॥२०॥
20. evamuktastu rāmeṇa lakṣmaṇaḥ paravīrahā ,
acireṇāśramaṃ bhrātuścakāra sumahābalaḥ.
20. evam uktaḥ tu rāmeṇa lakṣmaṇaḥ paravīrahā
acireṇa āśramam bhrātuḥ cakāra sumahābalaḥ
20. rāmeṇa evam uktaḥ tu paravīrahā sumahābalaḥ
lakṣmaṇaḥ bhrātuḥ āśramam acireṇa cakāra
20. Thus addressed by Rama, the exceedingly mighty Lakshmana, slayer of enemy heroes, quickly constructed a hermitage for his brother.
पर्णशालां सुविपुलां तत्र संघातमृत्तिकाम् ।
सुस्तम्भां मस्करैर्दीर्घैः कृतवंशां सुशोभनाम् ॥२१॥
21. parṇaśālāṃ suvipulāṃ tatra saṃghātamṛttikām ,
sustambhāṃ maskarairdīrghaiḥ kṛtavaṃśāṃ suśobhanām.
21. parṇaśālām suvipulām tatra saṅghātamṛttikām
sustambhām maskaraiḥ dīrghaiḥ kṛtavaṃśām suśobhanām
21. tatra suvipulām saṅghātamṛttikām sustambhām
dīrghaiḥ maskaraiḥ kṛtavaṃśām suśobhanām parṇaśālām
21. There, he built a leaf-hut that was very spacious, with compacted earth for its walls, sturdy pillars, and its roof-beams made of long bamboos, making it exceedingly beautiful.
स गत्वा लक्ष्मणः श्रीमान्नदीं गोदावरीं तदा ।
स्नात्वा पद्मानि चादाय सफलः पुनरागतः ॥२२॥
22. sa gatvā lakṣmaṇaḥ śrīmānnadīṃ godāvarīṃ tadā ,
snātvā padmāni cādāya saphalaḥ punarāgataḥ.
22. saḥ gatvā lakṣmaṇaḥ śrīmān nadīm godāvarīm tadā
snātvā padmāni ca ādāya saphalaḥ punaḥ āgataḥ
22. tada saḥ śrīmān lakṣmaṇaḥ godāvarīm nadīm gatvā
snātvā ca padmāni ādāya saphalaḥ punaḥ āgataḥ
22. Then, the glorious Lakshmana went to the Godavari River, bathed, collected lotus flowers, and returned with fruit.
ततः पुष्पबलिं कृत्वा शान्तिं च स यथाविधि ।
दर्शयामास रामाय तदाश्रमपदं कृतम् ॥२३॥
23. tataḥ puṣpabaliṃ kṛtvā śāntiṃ ca sa yathāvidhi ,
darśayāmāsa rāmāya tadāśramapadaṃ kṛtam.
23. tataḥ puṣpabalim kṛtvā śāntim ca saḥ yathāvidhi
darśayāmāsa rāmāya tadāśramapadam kṛtam
23. saḥ yathāvidhi puṣpabalim ca śāntim kṛtvā
tataḥ rāmāya kṛtam tadāśramapadam darśayāmāsa
23. Then, after performing a flower offering (bali) and a peace ceremony (śānti) according to the prescribed rites, he showed Rama the prepared hermitage (āśrama) site.
स तं दृष्ट्वा कृतं सौम्यमाश्रमं सह सीतया ।
राघवः पर्णशालायां हर्षमाहारयत् परम् ॥२४॥
24. sa taṃ dṛṣṭvā kṛtaṃ saumyamāśramaṃ saha sītayā ,
rāghavaḥ parṇaśālāyāṃ harṣamāhārayat param.
24. saḥ tam dṛṣṭvā kṛtam saumyam āśramam saha sītayā
rāghavaḥ parṇaśālāyām harṣam āhārayat param
24. saḥ rāghavaḥ sītayā saha kṛtam saumyam tam
āśramam dṛṣṭvā parṇaśālāyām harṣam param āhārayat
24. Seeing that gentle hermitage (āśrama) which had been prepared, along with Sītā, Rāghava felt supreme joy in the leaf-hut.
सुसंहृष्टः परिष्वज्य बाहुभ्यां लक्ष्मणं तदा ।
अतिस्निग्धं च गाढं च वचनं चेदमब्रवीत् ॥२५॥
25. susaṃhṛṣṭaḥ pariṣvajya bāhubhyāṃ lakṣmaṇaṃ tadā ,
atisnigdhaṃ ca gāḍhaṃ ca vacanaṃ cedamabravīt.
25. susaṃhṛṣṭaḥ pariṣvajya bāhubhyām lakṣmaṇam tadā
atisnigdham ca gāḍham ca vacanam ca idam abravīt
25. tadā susaṃhṛṣṭaḥ bāhubhyām lakṣmaṇam pariṣvajya
atisnigdham ca gāḍham ca idam vacanam ca abravīt
25. Then, greatly pleased, embracing Lakṣmaṇa with both arms, he spoke these words, which were exceedingly affectionate and firm.
प्रीतो ऽस्मि ते महत् कर्म त्वया कृतमिदं प्रभो ।
प्रदेयो यन्निमित्तं ते परिष्वङ्गो मया कृतः ॥२६॥
26. prīto'smi te mahat karma tvayā kṛtamidaṃ prabho ,
pradeyo yannimittaṃ te pariṣvaṅgo mayā kṛtaḥ.
26. prītaḥ asmi te mahat karma tvayā kṛtam idam prabho
pradeyaḥ yat nimittam te pariṣvaṅgaḥ mayā kṛtaḥ
26. prabho te tvayā idam mahat karma kṛtam prītaḥ asmi
yat nimittam te mayā pariṣvaṅgaḥ pradeyaḥ kṛtaḥ
26. O lord, I am pleased with you for this great deed accomplished by you. It is for this reason that I have given you this embrace (pariṣvaṅga).
भावज्ञेन कृतज्ञेन धर्मज्ञेन च लक्ष्मण ।
त्वया पुत्रेण धर्मात्मा न संवृत्तः पिता मम ॥२७॥
27. bhāvajñena kṛtajñena dharmajñena ca lakṣmaṇa ,
tvayā putreṇa dharmātmā na saṃvṛttaḥ pitā mama.
27. bhāvajñena kṛtajñena dharmajñena ca lakṣmaṇa
tvayā putreṇa dharmātmā na saṃvṛttaḥ pitā mama
27. lakṣmaṇa tvayā putreṇa bhāvajñena kṛtajñena
dharmajñena ca mama dharmātmā pitā na saṃvṛttaḥ
27. O Lakshmana, with a son like you - who understands intentions, is grateful, and knows natural law (dharma) - my righteous father was not disgraced.
एवं लक्ष्मणमुक्त्वा तु राघवो लक्ष्मिवर्धनः ।
तस्मिन्देशे बहुफले न्यवसत् स सुखं वशी ॥२८॥
28. evaṃ lakṣmaṇamuktvā tu rāghavo lakṣmivardhanaḥ ,
tasmindeśe bahuphale nyavasat sa sukhaṃ vaśī.
28. evam lakṣmaṇam uktvā tu rāghavaḥ lakṣmīvardhanaḥ
tasmin deśe bahuphale nyavasat sa sukham vaśī
28. rāghavaḥ lakṣmīvardhanaḥ vaśī tu lakṣmaṇam evam
uktvā sa tasmin bahuphale deśe sukham nyavasat
28. Thus having spoken to Lakshmana, Rama - the enhancer of prosperity and master of his senses - dwelt happily in that abundantly fruitful region.
कं चित् कालं स धर्मात्मा सीतया लक्ष्मणेन च ।
अन्वास्यमानो न्यवसत् स्वर्गलोके यथामरः ॥२९॥
29. kaṃ cit kālaṃ sa dharmātmā sītayā lakṣmaṇena ca ,
anvāsyamāno nyavasat svargaloke yathāmaraḥ.
29. kam cit kālam sa dharmātmā sītayā lakṣmaṇena ca
anvāsyāmānaḥ nyavasat svargaloke yathā amaraḥ
29. sa dharmātmā sītayā lakṣmaṇena ca anvāsyāmānaḥ
kam cit kālam svargaloke amaraḥ yathā nyavasat
29. For some time, that righteous soul (dharmātmā), attended upon by Sita and Lakshmana, dwelt as if an immortal in the heavenly realm.
