ततः सुमन्त्रस्त्वागम्य राघवं वाक्यमब्रवीत् ।
एते निवारिता राजन्द्वारि तिष्ठन्ति तापसाः ॥१॥
1. tataḥ sumantrastvāgamya rāghavaṃ vākyamabravīt ,
ete nivāritā rājandvāri tiṣṭhanti tāpasāḥ.

1. Then Sumantra, having approached you, spoke these words to Rāghava: 'O King, these ascetics have been stopped and are standing at the door.'
भार्गवं च्यवनं नाम पुरस्कृत्य महर्षयः ।
दर्शनं ते महाराज चोदयन्ति कृतत्वराः ।
प्रीयमाणा नरव्याघ्र यमुनातीरवासिनः ॥२॥
2. bhārgavaṃ cyavanaṃ nāma puraskṛtya maharṣayaḥ ,
darśanaṃ te mahārāja codayanti kṛtatvarāḥ ,
prīyamāṇā naravyāghra yamunātīravāsinaḥ.

2. O great king, the great sages, led by Cyavana, a descendant of Bhṛgu, are eagerly seeking your audience. These pleased residents of the Yamunā bank are pressing for your presence, O tiger among men.
तस्य तद्वचनं श्रुत्वा रामः प्रोवाच धर्मवित् ।
प्रवेश्यन्तां महात्मानो भार्गवप्रमुखा द्विजाः ॥३॥
3. tasya tadvacanaṃ śrutvā rāmaḥ provāca dharmavit ,
praveśyantāṃ mahātmāno bhārgavapramukhā dvijāḥ.

| praveśyantām mahātmānaḥ bhārgavapramukhāḥ dvijāḥ

3. Hearing his statement, Rama, the knower of (dharma), said: "Let the great-souled twice-born ones (dvijāḥ), led by Bhargava, be admitted."
राज्ञस्त्वाज्ञां पुरस्कृत्य द्वाःस्थो मूर्ध्नि कृताञ्जलिः ।
प्रवेशयामास ततस्तापसान् संमतान्बहून् ॥४॥
4. rājñastvājñāṃ puraskṛtya dvāḥstho mūrdhni kṛtāñjaliḥ ,
praveśayāmāsa tatastāpasān saṃmatānbahūn.

4. The doorkeeper, honoring the king's command and with hands joined in reverence on his head, then admitted many esteemed ascetics.
शतं समधिकं तत्र दीप्यमानं स्वतेजसा ।
प्रविष्टं राजभवनं तापसानां महात्मनाम् ॥५॥
5. śataṃ samadhikaṃ tatra dīpyamānaṃ svatejasā ,
praviṣṭaṃ rājabhavanaṃ tāpasānāṃ mahātmanām.

| praviṣṭam rājabhavanam tāpasānām mahātmanām

5. More than a hundred of those great-souled ascetics, shining with their own splendor, entered the king's palace.
ते द्विजाः पूर्णकलशैः सर्वतीर्थाम्बु सत्कृतम् ।
गृहीत्वा फलमूलं च रामस्याभ्याहरन्बहु ॥६॥
6. te dvijāḥ pūrṇakalaśaiḥ sarvatīrthāmbu satkṛtam ,
gṛhītvā phalamūlaṃ ca rāmasyābhyāharanbahu.
6. te dvijāḥ pūrṇakalaśaiḥ sarvatīrthāmbu satkṛtam
| gṛhītvā phalamūlam ca rāmasya abhyāharan bahu
6. te dvijāḥ pūrṇakalaśaiḥ satkṛtam sarvatīrthāmbu
ca phalamūlam gṛhītvā rāmasya bahu abhyāharan
6. Those twice-born ones (dvijāḥ), with full pitchers of consecrated water from all sacred bathing places (tīrtha), and having brought fruits and roots, offered many to Rama.
प्रतिगृह्य तु तत् सर्वं रामः प्रीतिपुरस्कृतः ।
तीर्थोदकानि सर्वाणि फलानि विविधानि च ॥७॥
7. pratigṛhya tu tat sarvaṃ rāmaḥ prītipuraskṛtaḥ ,
tīrthodakāni sarvāṇi phalāni vividhāni ca.
7. pratigṛhya tu tat sarvam rāmaḥ prītipuraskṛtaḥ
| tīrthodakāni sarvāṇi phalāni vividhāni ca
7. rāmaḥ prītipuraskṛtaḥ tu tat sarvam tīrthodakāni

7. Rāma, filled with respect, accepted all those waters from sacred places and various fruits.
उवाच च महाबाहुः सर्वानेव महामुनीन् ।
इमान्यासनमुख्यानि यथार्हमुपविश्यताम् ॥८॥
8. uvāca ca mahābāhuḥ sarvāneva mahāmunīn ,
imānyāsanamukhyāni yathārhamupaviśyatām.

imāni āsanamukhyāni yathā-arham upaviśyatām
8. mahābāhuḥ ca sarvān eva mahāmunīn uvāca

8. And the mighty-armed (Rāma) said to all those great sages (muni): 'Please be seated on these excellent seats according to your worth.'
रामस्य भाषितं श्रुत्वा सर्व एव महर्षयः ।
बृसीषु रुचिराख्यासु निषेदुः काञ्चनीषु ते ॥९॥
9. rāmasya bhāṣitaṃ śrutvā sarva eva maharṣayaḥ ,
bṛsīṣu rucirākhyāsu niṣeduḥ kāñcanīṣu te.
9. rāmasya bhāṣitam śrutvā sarve eva maharṣayaḥ
| bṛsīṣu rucirākhyāsu niṣeduḥ kāñcanīṣu te
9. rāmasya bhāṣitam śrutvā te sarve eva maharṣayaḥ
rucirākhyāsu kāñcanīṣu bṛsīṣu niṣeduḥ
9. Having heard Rāma's speech, all those great sages sat down on the beautiful, golden (bṛsī) mats.
उपविष्टानृषींस्तत्र दृष्ट्वा परपुरंजयः ।
प्रयतः प्राञ्जलिर्भूत्वा राघवो वाक्यमब्रवीत् ॥१०॥
10. upaviṣṭānṛṣīṃstatra dṛṣṭvā parapuraṃjayaḥ ,
prayataḥ prāñjalirbhūtvā rāghavo vākyamabravīt.
10. upaviṣṭān ṛṣīn tatra dṛṣṭvā para-puram-jayaḥ |
prayataḥ prāñjaliḥ bhūtvā rāghavaḥ vākyam abravīt
10. rāghavaḥ para-puram-jayaḥ tatra upaviṣṭān ṛṣīn
dṛṣṭvā prayataḥ prāñjaliḥ bhūtvā vākyam abravīt
10. Having seen the sages seated there, Rāghava, the conqueror of enemy cities, became focused and, with joined palms, spoke these words.
किमागमनकार्यं वः किं करोमि तपोधनाः ।
आज्ञाप्यो ऽहं महर्षीणां सर्वकामकरः सुखम् ॥११॥
11. kimāgamanakāryaṃ vaḥ kiṃ karomi tapodhanāḥ ,
ājñāpyo'haṃ maharṣīṇāṃ sarvakāmakaraḥ sukham.
11. kim āgamanakāryam vaḥ kim karomi tapodhanāḥ
ājñāpyaḥ aham maharṣīṇām sarvakāmakaraḥ sukham
11. tapodhanāḥ vaḥ āgamanakāryam kim kim karomi
aham maharṣīṇām ājñāpyaḥ sarvakāmakaraḥ sukham
11. What is the purpose of your arrival, O possessors of spiritual austerity (tapas)? What can I do for you? I am at the command of the great sages, ready to fulfill all your wishes gladly.
इदं राज्यं च सकलं जीवितं च हृदि स्थितम् ।
सर्वमेतद्द्विजार्थं मे सत्यमेतद्ब्रवीमि वः ॥१२॥
12. idaṃ rājyaṃ ca sakalaṃ jīvitaṃ ca hṛdi sthitam ,
sarvametaddvijārthaṃ me satyametadbravīmi vaḥ.
12. idam rājyam ca sakalam jīvitam ca hṛdi sthitam
sarvam etat dvijārtham me satyam etat bravīmi vaḥ
12. idam sakalam rājyam ca hṛdi sthitam jīvitam ca
etat sarvam me dvijārtham etat satyam vaḥ bravīmi
12. This entire kingdom and my very life are for the sake of the brahmins (dvija). I speak this truth to you.
तस्य तद्वचनं श्रुत्वा साधुवादो महानभूत् ।
ऋषीणामुग्रतपसां यमुनातीरवासिनाम् ॥१३॥
13. tasya tadvacanaṃ śrutvā sādhuvādo mahānabhūt ,
ṛṣīṇāmugratapasāṃ yamunātīravāsinām.
13. tasya tat vacanam śrutvā sādhuvādaḥ mahān
abhūt ṛṣīṇām ugratapasām yamunātīravāsinām
13. tasya tat vacanam śrutvā ugratapasām
yamunātīravāsinām ṛṣīṇām mahān sādhuvādaḥ abhūt
13. Having heard his words, a great acclamation arose from the sages, who were endowed with fierce spiritual austerity (tapas) and resided on the bank of the Yamuna.
ऊचुश्च ते महात्मानो हर्षेण महतान्विताः ।
उपपन्नं नरश्रेष्ठ तवैव भुवि नान्यतः ॥१४॥
14. ūcuśca te mahātmāno harṣeṇa mahatānvitāḥ ,
upapannaṃ naraśreṣṭha tavaiva bhuvi nānyataḥ.
14. ūcuḥ ca te mahātmānaḥ harṣeṇa mahatā anvitāḥ
upapannam naraśreṣṭha tava eva bhuvi na anyataḥ
14. te mahātmānaḥ mahatā harṣeṇa anvitāḥ ca ūcuḥ he
naraśreṣṭha tava eva bhuvi upapannam na anyataḥ
14. And those noble-souled sages, filled with great joy, said: 'This is fitting only for you, O best of men, on this earth, and for no one else.'
बहवः पार्थिवा राजन्नतिक्रान्ता महाबलाः ।
कार्यगौरवमश्रुत्वा प्रतिज्ञां नाभ्यरोचयन् ॥१५॥
15. bahavaḥ pārthivā rājannatikrāntā mahābalāḥ ,
kāryagauravamaśrutvā pratijñāṃ nābhyarocayan.
15. bahavaḥ pārthivāḥ rājan atikrāntāḥ mahābalāḥ
kāryagauravam aśrutvā pratijñām na abhyarocayan
15. rājan bahavaḥ mahābalāḥ pārthivāḥ atikrāntāḥ

15. O King, many powerful rulers have passed away. Not having understood the gravity of the task, they did not approve of the vow.
त्वया पुनर्ब्राह्मणगौरवादियं कृता प्रतिज्ञा ह्यनवेक्ष्य कारणम् ।
कुरुष्व कर्ता ह्यसि नात्र संशयो महाभयात्त्रातुमृषींस्त्वमर्हसि ॥१६॥
16. tvayā punarbrāhmaṇagauravādiyaṃ kṛtā pratijñā hyanavekṣya kāraṇam ,
kuruṣva kartā hyasi nātra saṃśayo mahābhayāttrātumṛṣīṃstvamarhasi.
16. tvayā punaḥ brāhmaṇagauravāt iyam
kṛtā pratijñā hi anavekṣya kāraṇam
kuruṣva kartā hi asi na atra saṃśayaḥ
mahābhayāt trātum ṛṣīn tvam arhasi
16. punaḥ tvayā brāhmaṇagauravāt kāraṇam anavekṣya iyam pratijñā kṛtā hi.

atra saṃśayaḥ na.
tvam mahābhayāt ṛṣīn trātum arhasi.
16. However, you made this vow out of respect for Brahmins, without considering the reason. Please fulfill it, for you are indeed capable; there is no doubt about this. You are able to protect the sages from great fear.
