श्रुत्वा हनूमतो वाक्यं यथावदनुपूर्वशः ।
ततो ऽब्रवीन्महातेजा रामः सत्यपराक्रमः ॥१॥
1. śrutvā hanūmato vākyaṃ yathāvadanupūrvaśaḥ ,

1. Having heard Hanumān's words accurately and in due order, then the immensely powerful Rāma, whose prowess was unwavering, spoke.
यां निवेदयसे लङ्कां पुरीं भीमस्य रक्षसः ।
क्षिप्रमेनां वधिष्यामि सत्यमेतद्ब्रवीमि ते ॥२॥
2. yāṃ nivedayase laṅkāṃ purīṃ bhīmasya rakṣasaḥ ,
kṣipramenāṃ vadhiṣyāmi satyametadbravīmi te.
2. yām nivedayase laṅkām purīm bhīmasya rakṣasaḥ
kṣipram enām vadhiṣyāmi satyam etat bravīmi te

2. That city of Lanka, which you describe as belonging to the formidable demon (rākṣasa), I will swiftly destroy it. I speak this truth to you.
अस्मिन्मुहूर्ते सुग्रीव प्रयाणमभिरोचये ।
युक्तो मुहूर्तो विजयः प्राप्तो मध्यं दिवाकरः ॥३॥
3. asminmuhūrte sugrīva prayāṇamabhirocaye ,
yukto muhūrto vijayaḥ prāpto madhyaṃ divākaraḥ.
3. asmin muhūrte sugrīva prayāṇam abhirochaye yuktaḥ
muhūrtaḥ vijayaḥ prāptaḥ madhyam divākaraḥ

3. Sugrīva, I deem this very moment suitable for our departure. This is an auspicious time (muhūrta) named 'Vijaya', and the sun has reached its zenith.
उत्तरा फल्गुनी ह्यद्य श्वस्तु हस्तेन योक्ष्यते ।
अभिप्रयाम सुग्रीव सर्वानीकसमावृताः ॥४॥
4. uttarā phalgunī hyadya śvastu hastena yokṣyate ,
abhiprayāma sugrīva sarvānīkasamāvṛtāḥ.

4. Today, the moon is in the constellation Uttarā Phalgunī, and tomorrow it will be conjoined with Hastā. Therefore, Sugrīva, let us proceed, accompanied by all our armies.
निमित्तानि च धन्यानि यानि प्रादुर्भवन्ति मे ।
निहत्य रावणं सीतामानयिष्यामि जानकीम् ॥५॥
5. nimittāni ca dhanyāni yāni prādurbhavanti me ,
nihatya rāvaṇaṃ sītāmānayiṣyāmi jānakīm.

5. And the auspicious signs that appear for me indicate that, having killed Rāvaṇa, I will bring back Sītā (Jānakī).
उपरिष्टाद्धि नयनं स्फुरमाणमिदं मम ।
विजयं समनुप्राप्तं शंसतीव मनोरथम् ॥६॥
6. upariṣṭāddhi nayanaṃ sphuramāṇamidaṃ mama ,
vijayaṃ samanuprāptaṃ śaṃsatīva manoratham.
6. upariṣṭāt hi nayanam sphuramāṇam idam mama
vijayam samanuprāptam śaṃsati iva manoratham

6. This throbbing eye of mine, located above, indeed seems to announce a victory that has already been attained, and the fulfillment of my desire.
अग्रे यातु बलस्यास्य नीलो मार्गमवेक्षितुम् ।
वृतः शतसहस्रेण वानराणां तरस्विनाम् ॥७॥
7. agre yātu balasyāsya nīlo mārgamavekṣitum ,
vṛtaḥ śatasahasreṇa vānarāṇāṃ tarasvinām.
7. agre yātu balasya asya nīlaḥ mārgam avekṣitum
vṛtaḥ śatasahasreṇa vānarāṇām tarasvinām
7. asya balasya agre nīlaḥ mārgam avekṣitum yātu

7. Let Nīla go ahead of this army to scout the path, accompanied by a hundred thousand powerful monkeys.
फलमूलवता नील शीतकाननवारिणा ।
पथा मधुमता चाशु सेनां सेनापते नय ॥८॥
8. phalamūlavatā nīla śītakānanavāriṇā ,
pathā madhumatā cāśu senāṃ senāpate naya.

8. O Nīla, O General, quickly lead the army by a path that offers fruits and roots, cool forest water, and is pleasant.
दूषयेयुर्दुरात्मानः पथि मूलफलोदकम् ।
राक्षसाः परिरक्षेथास्तेभ्यस्त्वं नित्यमुद्यतः ॥९॥
9. dūṣayeyurdurātmānaḥ pathi mūlaphalodakam ,
rākṣasāḥ parirakṣethāstebhyastvaṃ nityamudyataḥ.
9. dūṣayeyuḥ durātmānaḥ pathi mūlaphalodakam rākṣasāḥ
parirakṣethāḥ tebhyaḥ tvam nityam udyataḥ
9. durātmānaḥ rākṣasāḥ pathi mūlaphalodakam dūṣayeyuḥ
tvam tebhyaḥ nityam udyataḥ parirakṣethāḥ
9. The wicked rākṣasas (rākṣasa) might contaminate the roots, fruits, and water along the path. Therefore, you should always be vigilant and protect against them.
निम्नेषु वनदुर्गेषु वनेषु च वनौकसः ।
अभिप्लुत्याभिपश्येयुः परेषां निहतं बलम् ॥१०॥
10. nimneṣu vanadurgeṣu vaneṣu ca vanaukasaḥ ,
abhiplutyābhipaśyeyuḥ pareṣāṃ nihataṃ balam.
10. nimneṣu vanadurgeṣu vaneṣu ca vanaukasaḥ
abhiplutya abhipaśyeyuḥ pareṣām nihataṃ balam
10. vanaukasaḥ nimneṣu vanadurgeṣu vaneṣu ca
abhiplutya pareṣām nihataṃ balam abhipaśyeyuḥ
10. The forest-dwellers (vanaukasa), the monkeys, should rush forward into low-lying areas, dense forests, and other wooded regions, and there observe the enemy's destroyed army.
सागरौघनिभं भीममग्रानीकं महाबलाः ।
कपिसिंहा प्रकर्षन्तु शतशो ऽथ सहस्रशः ॥११॥
11. sāgaraughanibhaṃ bhīmamagrānīkaṃ mahābalāḥ ,
kapisiṃhā prakarṣantu śataśo'tha sahasraśaḥ.
11. sāgaraoghanibham bhīmam agrānīkam mahābalāḥ
kapisiṃhā prakarṣantu śataśaḥ atha sahasraśaḥ
11. mahābalāḥ kapisiṃhā sāgaraoghanibham bhīmam
agrānīkam śataśaḥ atha sahasraśaḥ prakarṣantu
11. Let the mighty monkey-lions (kapisiṃha), by hundreds and by thousands, lead forward the formidable vanguard, which resembles a surging ocean.
गजश्च गिरिसंकाशो गवयश्च महाबलः ।
गवाक्षश्चाग्रतो यान्तु गवां दृप्ता इवर्षभाः ॥१२॥
12. gajaśca girisaṃkāśo gavayaśca mahābalaḥ ,
gavākṣaścāgrato yāntu gavāṃ dṛptā ivarṣabhāḥ.
12. gajaḥ ca girisaṃkāśaḥ gavayaḥ ca mahābalaḥ
gavākṣaḥ ca agrataḥ yāntu gavām dṛptāḥ iva ṛṣabhāḥ
12. girisaṃkāśaḥ gajaḥ ca mahābalaḥ gavayaḥ ca
gavākṣaḥ ca gavām dṛptāḥ ṛṣabhāḥ iva agrataḥ yāntu
12. Let Gaja, who is like a mountain, and Gavaya, the mighty one, and Gavākṣa, all go forth at the front, like proud bulls among cattle.
यातु वानरवाहिन्या वानरः प्लवतां पतिः ।
पालयन्दक्षिणं पार्श्वमृषभो वानरर्षभः ॥१३॥
13. yātu vānaravāhinyā vānaraḥ plavatāṃ patiḥ ,
pālayandakṣiṇaṃ pārśvamṛṣabho vānararṣabhaḥ.
13. yātu vānaravāhinyā vānaraḥ plavatām patiḥ
pālayan dakṣiṇam pārśam ṛṣabhaḥ vānararṣabhaḥ
13. plavatām patiḥ ṛṣabhaḥ vānararṣabhaḥ vānaraḥ
dakṣiṇam pārśam pālayan vānaravāhinyā yātu
13. Let the monkey chief (vānararṣabha), the lord of leapers (plavatāṃ pati), go forth with the monkey army, protecting the right flank.
गन्धहस्तीव दुर्धर्षस्तरस्वी गन्धमादनः ।
यातु वानरवाहिन्याः सव्यं पार्श्वमधिष्ठितः ॥१४॥
14. gandhahastīva durdharṣastarasvī gandhamādanaḥ ,
yātu vānaravāhinyāḥ savyaṃ pārśvamadhiṣṭhitaḥ.
14. gandhahastī iva durdharṣaḥ tarasvī gandhamādanaḥ
yātu vānaravāhinyāḥ savyaṃ pārśvam adhiṣṭhitaḥ
14. gandhamādanaḥ tarasvī durdharṣaḥ gandhahastī iva
vānaravāhinyāḥ savyaṃ pārśvam adhiṣṭhitaḥ yātu
14. Let the powerful and irresistible Gandhamādana, resembling an elephant in musth, be positioned on the left flank of the monkey army.
यास्यामि बलमध्ये ऽहं बलौघमभिहर्षयन् ।
अधिरुह्य हनूमन्तमैरावतमिवेश्वरः ॥१५॥
15. yāsyāmi balamadhye'haṃ balaughamabhiharṣayan ,
adhiruhya hanūmantamairāvatamiveśvaraḥ.
15. yāsyāmi bala-madhye aham bala-ogham abhiharṣayan
adhiruhya hanūmantam airāvatam iva īśvaraḥ
15. aham hanūmantam adhiruhya īśvaraḥ airāvatam
iva bala-ogham abhiharṣayan bala-madhye yāsyāmi
15. I will go into the midst of the army, encouraging the vast multitude of troops, mounting Hanūmān just as the lord (Indra) mounts Airāvata.
अङ्गदेनैष संयातु लक्ष्मणश्चान्तकोपमः ।
सार्वभौमेण भूतेशो द्रविणाधिपतिर्यथा ॥१६॥
16. aṅgadenaiṣa saṃyātu lakṣmaṇaścāntakopamaḥ ,
sārvabhaumeṇa bhūteśo draviṇādhipatiryathā.
16. aṅgadena eṣa saṃyātu lakṣmaṇaḥ ca antaka-upamaḥ
sārvabhaumeṇa bhūteśaḥ draviṇa-adhipatiḥ yathā
16. eṣa aṅgadena saṃyātu ca lakṣmaṇaḥ antaka-upamaḥ
yathā bhūteśaḥ sārvabhaumeṇa draviṇa-adhipatiḥ
16. Let him (Rāma) march with Aṅgada, and Lakṣmaṇa, who is comparable to (Yama) Antaka. Just as the lord of beings (Bhūteśa) (marches) with a universal sovereign (sārvabhauma), and the lord of wealth (Draviṇādhipati, i.e., Kubera).
जाम्बवांश्च सुषेणश्च वेगदर्शी च वानरः ।
ऋक्षराजो महासत्त्वः कुक्षिं रक्षन्तु ते त्रयः ॥१७॥
17. jāmbavāṃśca suṣeṇaśca vegadarśī ca vānaraḥ ,
ṛkṣarājo mahāsattvaḥ kukṣiṃ rakṣantu te trayaḥ.
17. jāmbavān ca suṣeṇaḥ ca vegadarśī ca vānaraḥ
ṛkṣarājaḥ mahāsattvaḥ kukṣiṃ rakṣantu te trayaḥ
17. jāmbavān ṛkṣarājaḥ mahāsattvaḥ ca suṣeṇaḥ ca
vegadarśī vānaraḥ ca te trayaḥ kukṣiṃ rakṣantu
17. Let those three - Jāmbavān, the mighty king of bears, Suṣeṇa, and Vegadarśī, the monkey - protect the flank.
राघवस्य वचः श्रुत्वा सुग्रीवो वाहिनीपतिः ।
व्यादिदेश महावीर्यान् वानरान् वानरर्षभः ॥१८॥
18. rāghavasya vacaḥ śrutvā sugrīvo vāhinīpatiḥ ,
vyādideśa mahāvīryān vānarān vānararṣabhaḥ.
18. rāghavasya vacaḥ śrutvā sugrīvaḥ vāhinīpatiḥ
vyādideśa mahāvīryān vānarān vānararṣabhaḥ

18. Having heard the words of Rama, Sugriva, the chief of the army and the foremost among monkeys, commanded the exceedingly powerful monkeys.
ते वानरगणाः सर्वे समुत्पत्य युयुत्सवः ।
गुहाभ्यः शिखरेभ्यश्च आशु पुप्लुविरे तदा ॥१९॥
19. te vānaragaṇāḥ sarve samutpatya yuyutsavaḥ ,
guhābhyaḥ śikharebhyaśca āśu pupluvire tadā.
19. te vānaragaṇāḥ sarve samutpatya yuyutsavaḥ
guhābhyaḥ śikharebhyaḥ ca āśu pupluvire tadā

19. Then, all those hosts of monkeys, eager to fight, quickly sprang forth, leaping up from caves and mountain peaks.
ततो वानरराजेन लक्ष्मणेन च पूजितः ।
जगाम रामो धर्मात्मा ससैन्यो दक्षिणां दिशम् ॥२०॥
20. tato vānararājena lakṣmaṇena ca pūjitaḥ ,
jagāma rāmo dharmātmā sasainyo dakṣiṇāṃ diśam.
20. tataḥ vānararājena lakṣmaṇena ca pūjitaḥ jagāma
rāmaḥ dharmātmā sasainyaḥ dakṣiṇām diśam
20. tataḥ rāmaḥ dharmātmā vānararājena lakṣmaṇena
ca pūjitaḥ sasainyaḥ dakṣiṇām diśam jagāma
20. Thereupon, Rama, whose nature was righteousness (dharma), honored by the king of monkeys and Lakshmana, went with his army towards the southern direction.
शतैः शतसहस्रैश्च कोटीभिरयुतैरपि ।
वारणाभिश्च हरिभिर्ययौ परिवृतस्तदा ॥२१॥
21. śataiḥ śatasahasraiśca koṭībhirayutairapi ,
vāraṇābhiśca haribhiryayau parivṛtastadā.

vāraṇābhiḥ ca haribhiḥ yayau parivṛtaḥ tadā
21. tadā saḥ śataiḥ śatasahasraiḥ koṭībhiḥ ayutaiḥ
api vāraṇābhiḥ ca haribhiḥ parivṛtaḥ yayau
21. Then, surrounded by hundreds, hundreds of thousands, ten millions, and even ten thousands of elephants and monkeys, he proceeded.
तं यान्तमनुयाति
स्म महती हरिवाहिनी ॥२२॥

22. A vast army of monkeys followed him as he departed.
हृष्टाः प्रमुदिताः सर्वे सुग्रीवेणाभिपालिताः ।
आप्लवन्तः प्लवन्तश्च गर्जन्तश्च प्लवंगमाः ।
क्ष्वेलन्तो निनदन्तश्च जग्मुर्वै दक्षिणां दिशम् ॥२३॥
23. hṛṣṭāḥ pramuditāḥ sarve sugrīveṇābhipālitāḥ ,
āplavantaḥ plavantaśca garjantaśca plavaṃgamāḥ ,
kṣvelanto ninadantaśca jagmurvai dakṣiṇāṃ diśam.
23. hṛṣṭāḥ pramuditāḥ sarve sugrīveṇa
abhipālitāḥ āplavantaḥ plavantaḥ ca
garjantaḥ ca plavaṃgamāḥ kṣvelantaḥ

pramuditāḥ plavaṃgamāḥ āplavantaḥ
plavantaḥ ca garjantaḥ ca kṣvelantaḥ
ninadantaḥ ca dakṣiṇām diśam vai jagmuḥ
23. All the monkeys, joyful and exceedingly delighted, protected by Sugriva, went south. They were leaping, springing, roaring, and clamoring loudly.
भक्षयन्तः सुगन्धीनि मधूनि च फलानि च ।
उद्वहन्तो महावृक्षान्मञ्जरीपुञ्जधारिणः ॥२४॥
24. bhakṣayantaḥ sugandhīni madhūni ca phalāni ca ,
udvahanto mahāvṛkṣānmañjarīpuñjadhāriṇaḥ.
24. bhakṣayantaḥ sugandhīni madhūni ca phalāni ca
udvahantaḥ mahāvṛkṣān mañjarīpuñjadhāriṇaḥ
24. (te) sugandhīni madhūni ca phalāni ca bhakṣayantaḥ
mahāvṛkṣān udvahantaḥ mañjarīpuñjadhāriṇaḥ (jagmuḥ)
24. They went, eating fragrant honey and fruits, carrying massive trees, and themselves bearing clusters of blossoms.
अन्योन्यं सहसा दृष्टा निर्वहन्ति क्षिपन्ति च ।
पतन्तश्चोत्पतन्त्यन्ये पातयन्त्यपरे परान् ॥२५॥
25. anyonyaṃ sahasā dṛṣṭā nirvahanti kṣipanti ca ,
patantaścotpatantyanye pātayantyapare parān.
25. anyonyam sahasā dṛṣṭā nirvahanti kṣipanti ca
patantaḥ ca utpatanti anye pātayanti apare parān
25. sahasā anyonyam dṛṣṭāḥ (te) nirvahanti ca kṣipanti

25. Suddenly, when they saw each other, they would drag and throw one another. Some fell, others leaped up, and still others knocked their comrades down.
रावणो नो निहन्तव्यः सर्वे च रजनीचराः ।
इति गर्जन्ति हरयो राघवस्य समीपतः ॥२६॥
26. rāvaṇo no nihantavyaḥ sarve ca rajanīcarāḥ ,
iti garjanti harayo rāghavasya samīpataḥ.
26. rāvaṇaḥ naḥ nihantavyaḥ sarve ca rajanīcarāḥ
iti garjanti harayaḥ rāghavasya samīpataḥ

26. “Rāvaṇa must be killed by us, and all the night-roaming demons as well!” Thus the monkeys roared near Rāghava (Rāma).
पुरस्तादृषभो वीरो नीलः कुमुद एव च ।
पथानं शोधयन्ति स्म वानरैर्बहुभिः सह ॥२७॥
27. purastādṛṣabho vīro nīlaḥ kumuda eva ca ,
pathānaṃ śodhayanti sma vānarairbahubhiḥ saha.
27. purastāt ṛṣabhaḥ vīraḥ nīlaḥ kumudaḥ eva ca
pathānam śodhayanti sma vānaraiḥ bahubhiḥ saha
27. purastāt vīraḥ ṛṣabhaḥ nīlaḥ kumudaḥ eva ca

27. In front, the brave Ṛṣabha, Nīla, and Kumuda, along with many other monkeys, were clearing the path.
मध्ये तु राजा सुग्रीवो रामो लक्ष्मण एव च ।
बहुभिर्बलिभिर्भीमैर्वृताः शत्रुनिबर्हणः ॥२८॥
28. madhye tu rājā sugrīvo rāmo lakṣmaṇa eva ca ,
bahubhirbalibhirbhīmairvṛtāḥ śatrunibarhaṇaḥ.
28. madhye tu rājā sugrīvaḥ rāmaḥ lakṣmaṇaḥ eva ca
bahubhiḥ balibhiḥ bhīmaiḥ vṛtāḥ śatrunibarhaṇāḥ

28. In the middle, however, were King Sugrīva, Rāma, and Lakṣmaṇa, surrounded by many powerful, formidable warriors, destroyers of foes.
हरिः शतबलिर्वीरः कोटीभिर्दशभिर्वृतः ।
सर्वामेको ह्यवष्टभ्य ररक्ष हरिवाहिनीम् ॥२९॥
29. hariḥ śatabalirvīraḥ koṭībhirdaśabhirvṛtaḥ ,
sarvāmeko hyavaṣṭabhya rarakṣa harivāhinīm.

sarvām ekaḥ hi avaṣṭabhya rarakṣa harivāhinīm

29. The brave monkey Śatabali, surrounded by ten crores (of his followers), alone protected the entire monkey army by holding it firm.
कोटीशतपरीवारः केसरी पनसो गजः ।
अर्कश्चातिबलः पार्श्वमेकं तस्याभिरक्षति ॥३०॥
30. koṭīśataparīvāraḥ kesarī panaso gajaḥ ,
arkaścātibalaḥ pārśvamekaṃ tasyābhirakṣati.

30. Kesari, Panasa, Gaja, and the extremely powerful Arka, accompanied by hundreds of millions (of warriors), protect one flank of his (army).
सुषेणो जाम्बवांश्चैव ऋक्षैर्बहुभिरावृतः ।
सुग्रीवं पुरतः कृत्वा जघनं संररक्षतुः ॥३१॥
31. suṣeṇo jāmbavāṃścaiva ṛkṣairbahubhirāvṛtaḥ ,

31. Sushena and Jambavan, surrounded by many bears, placed (King) Sugriva in front and protected the rear (of the army).

संपतन्पततां श्रेष्ठस्तद्बलं पर्यपालयत् ॥३२॥
32. teṣāṃ senāpatirvīro nīlo vānarapuṃgavaḥ ,
saṃpatanpatatāṃ śreṣṭhastadbalaṃ paryapālayat.

32. The heroic Nila, chief of monkeys and commander of their army, the best among those who leap, protected that force.
दरीमिखः प्रजङ्घश्च जम्भो ऽथ रभसः कपिः ।
सर्वतश्च ययुर्वीरास्त्वरयन्तः प्लवंगमान् ॥३३॥
33. darīmikhaḥ prajaṅghaśca jambho'tha rabhasaḥ kapiḥ ,
sarvataśca yayurvīrāstvarayantaḥ plavaṃgamān.

33. Darimukha, Prajangha, Jambha, and then the monkey Rabhasa - these brave warriors went in all directions, urging the other monkeys forward.
एवं ते हरिशार्दूला गच्छन्तो बलदर्पिताः ।
अपश्यंस्ते गिरिश्रेष्ठं सह्यं द्रुमलतायुतम् ॥३४॥
34. evaṃ te hariśārdūlā gacchanto baladarpitāḥ ,
apaśyaṃste giriśreṣṭhaṃ sahyaṃ drumalatāyutam.

34. Thus, those chief monkeys, proud of their strength, while proceeding, beheld the foremost mountain, Sahya, covered with trees and creepers.
सागरौघनिभं भीमं तद्वानरबलं महत् ।
निःससर्प महाघोषं भीमवेग इवार्णवः ॥३५॥
35. sāgaraughanibhaṃ bhīmaṃ tadvānarabalaṃ mahat ,
niḥsasarpa mahāghoṣaṃ bhīmavega ivārṇavaḥ.

35. That great and formidable monkey army, resembling a surging ocean, issued forth with a mighty roar, like the ocean with its terrifying current.
तस्य दाशरथेः पार्श्वे शूरास्ते कपिकुञ्जराः ।
तूर्णमापुप्लुवुः सर्वे सदश्वा इव चोदिताः ॥३६॥
36. tasya dāśaratheḥ pārśve śūrāste kapikuñjarāḥ ,
tūrṇamāpupluvuḥ sarve sadaśvā iva coditāḥ.

36. All those heroic chief monkeys quickly leaped forward by the side of Daśaratha's son (Rāma), like well-bred horses that have been spurred on.
कपिभ्यामुह्यमानौ तौ शुशुभते नरर्षभौ ।
महद्भ्यामिव संस्पृष्टौ ग्राहाभ्यां चन्द्रभास्करौ ॥३७॥

37. Those two foremost among men (Rāma and Lakṣmaṇa), being carried by the two monkeys, shone splendidly, just as the moon and the sun appear when seized by the two great planetary entities (Rāhu and Ketu during an eclipse).
तमङ्गदगतो रामं लक्ष्मणः शुभया गिरा ।
उवाच प्रतिपूर्णार्थः स्मृतिमान्प्रतिभानवान् ॥३८॥
38. tamaṅgadagato rāmaṃ lakṣmaṇaḥ śubhayā girā ,
uvāca pratipūrṇārthaḥ smṛtimānpratibhānavān.

38. Lakṣmaṇa, whose words were profound, and who was mindful and brilliant, spoke to Rāma, who was in the company of Aṅgada, with auspicious words.
हृतामवाप्य वैदेहीं क्षिप्रं हत्वा च रावणम् ।
समृद्धार्थः समृद्धार्थामयोध्यां प्रतियास्यसि ॥३९॥
39. hṛtāmavāpya vaidehīṃ kṣipraṃ hatvā ca rāvaṇam ,
samṛddhārthaḥ samṛddhārthāmayodhyāṃ pratiyāsyasi.

39. You will quickly return to Ayodhyā, having recovered the abducted Vaidehī and killed Rāvaṇa, your aim (artha) accomplished, to a prosperous Ayodhyā.
महान्ति च निमित्तानि दिवि भूमौ च राघव ।
शुभान्ति तव पश्यामि सर्वाण्येवार्थसिद्धये ॥४०॥
40. mahānti ca nimittāni divi bhūmau ca rāghava ,
śubhānti tava paśyāmi sarvāṇyevārthasiddhaye.

40. And, O Rāghava, I observe great and auspicious omens both in the sky and on the earth; all of them indeed portend the success of your objective (artha-siddhi).
अनु वाति शुभो वायुः सेनां मृदुहितः सुखः ।
पूर्णवल्गुस्वराश्चेमे प्रवदन्ति मृगद्विजाः ॥४१॥
41. anu vāti śubho vāyuḥ senāṃ mṛduhitaḥ sukhaḥ ,
pūrṇavalgusvarāśceme pravadanti mṛgadvijāḥ.

41. A gentle, beneficial, and pleasant auspicious wind (vāyu) blows with the army. And these animals and birds are uttering full and melodious sounds.
प्रसन्नाश्च दिशः सर्वा विमलश्च दिवाकरः ।
उशना च प्रसन्नार्चिरनु त्वां भार्गवो गतः ॥४२॥
42. prasannāśca diśaḥ sarvā vimalaśca divākaraḥ ,
uśanā ca prasannārciranu tvāṃ bhārgavo gataḥ.

42. All the directions are serene, and the sun is pure. Ushanā, the son of Bhṛgu, with serene rays, has also followed you.
ब्रह्मराशिर्विशुद्धश्च शुद्धाश्च परमर्षयः ।
अर्चिष्मन्तः प्रकाशन्ते ध्रुवं सर्वे प्रदक्षिणम् ॥४३॥
43. brahmarāśirviśuddhaśca śuddhāśca paramarṣayaḥ ,
arciṣmantaḥ prakāśante dhruvaṃ sarve pradakṣiṇam.

43. The sacred knowledge (brahmarāśi) is perfectly pure, and the great sages are pure. All of them shine radiantly and move auspiciously in a clockwise direction.
त्रिशङ्कुर्विमलो भाति राजर्षिः सपुरोहितः ।
पितामहवरो ऽस्माकमिष्क्वाकूणां महात्मनाम् ॥४४॥
44. triśaṅkurvimalo bhāti rājarṣiḥ sapurohitaḥ ,
pitāmahavaro'smākamiṣkvākūṇāṃ mahātmanām.

44. The royal sage Triśaṅku, pure and accompanied by his priest, shines forth. He is a boon from the grandfather (Brahmā) for us, the great-souled Ikṣvākus.
विमले च प्रकाशेते विशाखे निरुपद्रवे ।
नक्षत्रं परमस्माकमिक्ष्वाकूणां महात्मनाम् ॥४५॥
45. vimale ca prakāśete viśākhe nirupadrave ,
nakṣatraṃ paramasmākamikṣvākūṇāṃ mahātmanām.

45. The two pure and undisturbed Viśākhā constellations shine brightly. This is the supreme constellation for us, the great-souled Ikṣvākus.
नैरृतं नैरृतानां च नक्षत्रमभिपीड्यते ।
मूलं मूलवता स्पृष्टं धूप्यते धूमकेतुना ॥४६॥
46. nairṛtaṃ nairṛtānāṃ ca nakṣatramabhipīḍyate ,
mūlaṃ mūlavatā spṛṣṭaṃ dhūpyate dhūmaketunā.

46. The constellation of Nirṛti, which pertains to the Rākṣasas, is being severely afflicted. The Mūla constellation is touched by Ketu and is being obscured by a comet.
सरं चैतद्विनाशाय राक्षसानामुपस्थितम् ।
काले कालगृहीतानां नकत्रं ग्रहपीडितम् ॥४७॥
47. saraṃ caitadvināśāya rākṣasānāmupasthitam ,
kāle kālagṛhītānāṃ nakatraṃ grahapīḍitam.

kāle kālagṛhītānām nakṣatram grahapīḍitam

47. An arrow, and this (calamity), has manifested for the destruction of the Rākṣasas. At the time when they are seized by destiny, their constellation is afflicted by planets.
प्रसन्नाः सुरसाश्चापो वनानि फलवन्ति च ।
प्रवान्त्यभ्यधिकं गन्धा यथर्तुकुसुमा द्रुमाः ॥४८॥
48. prasannāḥ surasāścāpo vanāni phalavanti ca ,
pravāntyabhyadhikaṃ gandhā yathartukusumā drumāḥ.

48. The waters are clear and sweet, and the forests are fruitful. The trees, adorned with seasonal flowers, emit their fragrances most abundantly.
व्यूढानि कपिसैन्यानि प्रकाशन्ते ऽधिकं प्रभो ।
देवानामिव सैन्यानि संग्रामे तारकामये ॥४९॥
49. vyūḍhāni kapisainyāni prakāśante'dhikaṃ prabho ,
devānāmiva sainyāni saṃgrāme tārakāmaye.

49. O Lord, the arrayed monkey armies shine forth exceedingly, just like the armies of the gods in the war with Tāraka.
एवमार्य समीक्ष्यैतान्प्रीतो भवितुमर्हसि ।
इति भ्रातरमाश्वास्य हृष्टः सौमित्रिरब्रवीत् ॥५०॥
50. evamārya samīkṣyaitānprīto bhavitumarhasi ,
iti bhrātaramāśvāsya hṛṣṭaḥ saumitrirabravīt.

iti bhrātaram āśvāsya hṛṣṭaḥ saumitriḥ abravīt

50. O noble one, after observing these, you should feel pleased. Having thus comforted his brother, Lakshmana, filled with delight, then spoke.
अथावृत्य महीं कृत्स्नां जगाम महती चमूः ।
ऋक्षवानरशार्दूलैर्नखदंष्ट्रायुधैर्वृता ॥५१॥
51. athāvṛtya mahīṃ kṛtsnāṃ jagāma mahatī camūḥ ,
ṛkṣavānaraśārdūlairnakhadaṃṣṭrāyudhairvṛtā.

51. Then, a vast army advanced, covering the entire earth, accompanied by bears, monkeys, and mighty warriors resembling tigers, whose only weapons were their claws and fangs.
कराग्रैश्चरणाग्रैश्च वानरैरुद्धतं रजः ।
भौममन्तर्दधे लोकं निवार्य सवितुः प्रभाम् ॥५२॥
52. karāgraiścaraṇāgraiśca vānarairuddhataṃ rajaḥ ,
bhaumamantardadhe lokaṃ nivārya savituḥ prabhām.

52. The dust, stirred up by the monkeys with their hands and feet, obscured the earthly realm and blocked the sun's light.
सा स्म याति दिवारात्रं महती हरिवाहिनी ।
हृष्टप्रमुदिता सेना सुग्रीवेणाभिरक्षिता ॥५३॥
53. sā sma yāti divārātraṃ mahatī harivāhinī ,
hṛṣṭapramuditā senā sugrīveṇābhirakṣitā.

53. That vast monkey army, guarded by Sugriva and filled with joy and delight, marched onward day and night.
वनरास्त्वरितं यान्ति सर्वे युद्धाभिनन्दनः ।
मुमोक्षयिषवः सीतां मुहूर्तं क्वापि नासत ॥५४॥
54. vanarāstvaritaṃ yānti sarve yuddhābhinandanaḥ ,
mumokṣayiṣavaḥ sītāṃ muhūrtaṃ kvāpi nāsata.

mumokṣayisavaḥ sītām muhūrtam kvā api na āsata

54. All the monkeys, eager for battle, rushed forward, wishing to rescue Sita. They did not linger anywhere, even for a moment.
ततः पादपसंबाधं नानामृगसमाकुलम् ।
सह्यपर्वतमासेदुर्मलयं च मही धरम् ॥५५॥
55. tataḥ pādapasaṃbādhaṃ nānāmṛgasamākulam ,
sahyaparvatamāsedurmalayaṃ ca mahī dharam.

55. Then, they reached Mount Sahya, which was dense with trees and teeming with various animals, and also Mount Malaya, an earth-bearing mountain.
काननानि विचित्राणि नदीप्रस्रवणानि च ।
पश्यन्नपि ययौ रामः सह्यस्य मलयस्य च ॥५६॥
56. kānanāni vicitrāṇi nadīprasravaṇāni ca ,
paśyannapi yayau rāmaḥ sahyasya malayasya ca.

56. Even while observing the beautiful forests, rivers, and springs of both Sahya and Malaya (mountains), Rama continued his journey.
चम्पकांस्तिलकांश्चूतानशोकान् सिन्दुवारकान् ।
करवीरांश्च तिमिशान्भञ्जन्ति स्म प्लवंगमाः ॥५७॥
57. campakāṃstilakāṃścūtānaśokān sinduvārakān ,
karavīrāṃśca timiśānbhañjanti sma plavaṃgamāḥ.

57. The monkeys were breaking campaka, tilaka, mango, ashoka, sinduvara, karavira, and timisha trees.
फलान्यमृतगन्धीनि मूलानि कुसुमानि च ।
बुभुजुर्वानरास्तत्र पादपानां बलोत्कटाः ॥५८॥
58. phalānyamṛtagandhīni mūlāni kusumāni ca ,
bubhujurvānarāstatra pādapānāṃ balotkaṭāḥ.

58. There, the exceedingly strong monkeys enjoyed the nectar-fragrant fruits, roots, and flowers of the trees.
द्रोणमात्रप्रमाणानि लम्बमानानि वानराः ।
ययुः पिबन्तो हृष्टास्ते मधूनि मधुपिङ्गलाः ॥५९॥
59. droṇamātrapramāṇāni lambamānāni vānarāḥ ,
yayuḥ pibanto hṛṣṭāste madhūni madhupiṅgalāḥ.

59. They, the joyful monkeys whose bodies were honey-colored, proceeded, drinking the hanging sweet liquids (madhūni) that were the size of a droṇa (a large measure).
पादपानवभञ्जन्तो विकर्षन्तस्तथा लताः ।
विधमन्तो गिरिवरान्प्रययुः प्लवगर्षभाः ॥६०॥
60. pādapānavabhañjanto vikarṣantastathā latāḥ ,
vidhamanto girivarānprayayuḥ plavagarṣabhāḥ.

60. The foremost monkeys proceeded, breaking down trees, pulling apart vines, and shaking the great mountains.
वृक्षेभ्यो ऽन्ये तु कपयो नर्दन्तो मधुदर्पिताः ।
अन्ये वृक्षान्प्रपद्यन्ते प्रपतन्त्यपि चापरे ॥६१॥
61. vṛkṣebhyo'nye tu kapayo nardanto madhudarpitāḥ ,
anye vṛkṣānprapadyante prapatantyapi cāpare.

61. Some monkeys, intoxicated with honey, were roaring from the trees. Others climbed trees, and still others fell down.
बभूव वसुधा तैस्तु संपूर्णा हरिपुंगवैः ।
यथा कमलकेदारैः पक्वैरिव वसुंधरा ॥६२॥
62. babhūva vasudhā taistu saṃpūrṇā haripuṃgavaiḥ ,
yathā kamalakedāraiḥ pakvairiva vasuṃdharā.
62. babhūva vasudhā taiḥ tu sampūrṇā haripuṅgavaiḥ

62. The earth became completely filled with those excellent monkeys, just as the land becomes abundant with ripened lotus beds.
महेन्द्रमथ संप्राप्य रामो राजीवलोचनः ।
अध्यारोहन्महाबाहुः शिखरं द्रुमभूषितम् ॥६३॥
63. mahendramatha saṃprāpya rāmo rājīvalocanaḥ ,
adhyārohanmahābāhuḥ śikharaṃ drumabhūṣitam.

63. Having then reached Mahendra mountain, Rama, the lotus-eyed and mighty-armed one, ascended its tree-adorned peak.
ततः शिखरमारुह्य रामो दशरथात्मजः ।
कूर्ममीनसमाकीर्णमपश्यत् सलिलाशयम् ॥६४॥
64. tataḥ śikharamāruhya rāmo daśarathātmajaḥ ,
kūrmamīnasamākīrṇamapaśyat salilāśayam.

64. Then, having climbed the peak, Rama, the son of Dasharatha, saw a body of water teeming with tortoises and fish.
ते सह्यं समतिक्रम्य मलयं च महागिरिम् ।
आसेदुरानुपूर्व्येण समुद्रं भीमनिःस्वनम् ॥६५॥
65. te sahyaṃ samatikramya malayaṃ ca mahāgirim ,
āsedurānupūrvyeṇa samudraṃ bhīmaniḥsvanam.

65. They, having successively traversed the Sahya and the great Malaya mountains, reached the ocean with its dreadful roar.
अवरुह्य जगामाशु वेलावनमनुत्तमम् ।
रामो रमयतां श्रेष्ठः ससुग्रीवः सलक्ष्मणः ॥६६॥
66. avaruhya jagāmāśu velāvanamanuttamam ,
rāmo ramayatāṃ śreṣṭhaḥ sasugrīvaḥ salakṣmaṇaḥ.

66. Rama, the foremost among those who bring delight, having descended, quickly went to the excellent shore forest, accompanied by Sugriva and Lakshmana.
अथ धौतोपलतलां तोयौघैः सहसोत्थितैः ।
वेलामासाद्य विपुलां रामो वचनमब्रवीत् ॥६७॥
67. atha dhautopalatalāṃ toyaughaiḥ sahasotthitaiḥ ,
velāmāsādya vipulāṃ rāmo vacanamabravīt.

67. Then, upon reaching the vast shore, whose rock surfaces had been washed by suddenly risen torrents of water, Rama spoke.
एते वयमनुप्राप्ताः सुग्रीव वरुणालयम् ।
इहेदानीं विचिन्ता सा या न पूर्वं समुत्थिता ॥६८॥
68. ete vayamanuprāptāḥ sugrīva varuṇālayam ,
ihedānīṃ vicintā sā yā na pūrvaṃ samutthitā.
68. ete vayam anuprāptāḥ sugrīva varuṇālayam iha
idānīm vicintā sā yā na pūrvam samutthitā

68. O Sugriva, we have arrived at the abode of Varuna (the ocean). Now, a significant concern has arisen here, one that had not presented itself before.
अतः परमतीरो ऽयं सागरः सरितां पति ।
न चायमनुपायेन शक्यस्तरितुमर्णवः ॥६९॥
69. ataḥ paramatīro'yaṃ sāgaraḥ saritāṃ pati ,
na cāyamanupāyena śakyastaritumarṇavaḥ.
69. ataḥ param atīraḥ ayam sāgaraḥ saritām patiḥ
na ca ayam anupāyena śakyaḥ taritum arṇavaḥ

69. Beyond this point, this ocean, the lord of rivers, is shoreless. And this vast sea cannot be crossed without a suitable means.
तदिहैव निवेशो ऽस्तु मन्त्रः प्रस्तूयतामिह ।
यथेदं वानरबलं परं पारमवाप्नुयात् ॥७०॥
70. tadihaiva niveśo'stu mantraḥ prastūyatāmiha ,
yathedaṃ vānarabalaṃ paraṃ pāramavāpnuyāt.
70. tad iha eva niveśaḥ astu mantraḥ prastūyatām
iha yathā idam vānarabalam param pāram avāpnuyāt
70. Therefore, let our encampment be right here, and let a counsel (mantra) be initiated so that this army of monkeys may reach the opposite shore.
इतीव स महाबाहुः सीताहरणकर्शितः ।
रामः सागरमासाद्य वासमाज्ञापयत्तदा ॥७१॥
71. itīva sa mahābāhuḥ sītāharaṇakarśitaḥ ,
rāmaḥ sāgaramāsādya vāsamājñāpayattadā.
71. iti iva sa mahābāhuḥ sītāharaṇakarśitaḥ
rāmaḥ sāgaram āsādya vāsam ājñāpayat tadā
71. Thus, the mighty-armed Rama, emaciated by the abduction of Sita, reached the ocean and then commanded an encampment.
संप्राप्तो मन्त्रकालो नः सागरस्येह लङ्घने ।
स्वां स्वां सेनां समुत्सृज्य मा च कश्चित् कुतो व्रजेत् ।
गच्छन्तु वानराः शूरा ज्ञेयं छन्नं भयं च नः ॥७२॥
72. saṃprāpto mantrakālo naḥ sāgarasyeha laṅghane ,
svāṃ svāṃ senāṃ samutsṛjya mā ca kaścit kuto vrajet ,
gacchantu vānarāḥ śūrā jñeyaṃ channaṃ bhayaṃ ca naḥ.
72. samprāptaḥ mantrakālaḥ naḥ sāgarasya
iha laṅghane svām svām senām samutsṛjya
mā ca kaścit kutaḥ vrajet gacchantu
vānarāḥ śūrāḥ jñeyam channam bhayam ca naḥ
72. The time for our counsel has arrived concerning the crossing of the ocean here. Let no one go anywhere, abandoning their respective armies. Let the brave monkeys proceed, and our hidden dangers must be ascertained.
रामस्य वचनं श्रुत्वा सुग्रीवः सहलक्ष्मणः ।
सेनां न्यवेशयत्तीरे सागरस्य द्रुमायुते ॥७३॥
73. rāmasya vacanaṃ śrutvā sugrīvaḥ sahalakṣmaṇaḥ ,
senāṃ nyaveśayattīre sāgarasya drumāyute.

73. Having heard Rama's words, Sugriva, accompanied by Lakshmana, encamped the army on the tree-lined shore of the ocean.
विरराज समीपस्थं सागरस्य तु तद्बलम् ।
मधुपाण्डुजलः श्रीमान्द्वितीय इव सागरः ॥७४॥
74. virarāja samīpasthaṃ sāgarasya tu tadbalam ,
madhupāṇḍujalaḥ śrīmāndvitīya iva sāgaraḥ.

74. That army, stationed near the ocean, shone splendidly, resembling a second glorious ocean with its yellowish-brown waters.
वेलावनमुपागम्य ततस्ते हरिपुंगवाः ।
विनिविष्टाः परं पारं काङ्क्षमाणा महोदधेः ॥७५॥
75. velāvanamupāgamya tataste haripuṃgavāḥ ,
viniviṣṭāḥ paraṃ pāraṃ kāṅkṣamāṇā mahodadheḥ.

viniviṣṭāḥ param pāram kāṅkṣamāṇāḥ mahodadheḥ

75. Having approached the coastal forest, those foremost among monkeys then settled down, desiring the far shore of the great ocean.
सा महार्णवमासाद्य हृष्टा वानरवाहिनी ।
वायुवेगसमाधूतं पश्यमाना महार्णवम् ॥७६॥
76. sā mahārṇavamāsādya hṛṣṭā vānaravāhinī ,
vāyuvegasamādhūtaṃ paśyamānā mahārṇavam.

76. That overjoyed monkey army, having reached the great ocean, was gazing upon the vast sea, agitated by the force of the wind.
दूरपारमसंबाधं रक्षोगणनिषेवितम् ।
पश्यन्तो वरुणावासं निषेदुर्हरियूथपाः ॥७७॥
77. dūrapāramasaṃbādhaṃ rakṣogaṇaniṣevitam ,
paśyanto varuṇāvāsaṃ niṣedurhariyūthapāḥ.

77. The monkey leaders sat down, observing Varuṇa's abode – the ocean – with its distant shores, unobstructed, and frequented by hosts of rākṣasas.
चण्डनक्रग्रहं घोरं क्षपादौ दिवसक्षये ।
चन्द्रोदये समाधूतं प्रतिचन्द्रसमाकुलम् ॥७८॥
78. caṇḍanakragrahaṃ ghoraṃ kṣapādau divasakṣaye ,
candrodaye samādhūtaṃ praticandrasamākulam.

78. It was a dreadful place, where fierce crocodiles and aquatic monsters preyed, agitated at the beginning of the night, at the close of day, and at moonrise, becoming confused by the many reflections of the moon.
चण्डानिलमहाग्राहैः कीर्णं तिमितिमिंगिलैः ।
दीप्तभोगैरिवाक्रीर्णं भुजंगैर्वरुणालयम् ॥७९॥
79. caṇḍānilamahāgrāhaiḥ kīrṇaṃ timitimiṃgilaiḥ ,
dīptabhogairivākrīrṇaṃ bhujaṃgairvaruṇālayam.

79. The abode of Varuṇa (the ocean), filled with fierce winds and great aquatic monsters, scattered with timis and timingilas, and as if covered by serpents with shining hoods.
अवगाढं महासत्तैर्नानाशैलसमाकुलम् ।
दुर्गं द्रुगममार्गं तमगाधमसुरालयम् ॥८०॥
80. avagāḍhaṃ mahāsattairnānāśailasamākulam ,
durgaṃ drugamamārgaṃ tamagādhamasurālayam.

80. That unfathomable abode of asuras, deep and difficult to access, frequented by mighty beings, crowded with various mountains, and without a discernible path.
मकरैर्नागभोगैश्च विगाढा वातलोहिताः ।
उत्पेतुश्च निपेतुश्च प्रवृद्धा जलराशयः ॥८१॥
81. makarairnāgabhogaiśca vigāḍhā vātalohitāḥ ,
utpetuśca nipetuśca pravṛddhā jalarāśayaḥ.

81. The turbulent masses of water, reddened by the wind, and agitated by makaras and the bodies of serpents (nāgas), rose up and then fell down.
अग्निचूर्णमिवाविद्धं भास्कराम्बुमनोरगम् ।
सुरारिविषयं घोरं पातालविषमं सदा ॥८२॥
82. agnicūrṇamivāviddhaṃ bhāskarāmbumanoragam ,
surāriviṣayaṃ ghoraṃ pātālaviṣamaṃ sadā.

82. Always a terrible domain of the enemies of gods (asuras), rugged like the netherworlds (patala), agitated as if by gunpowder, and possessing elements of sun, water, mind, and serpents.
सागरं चाम्बरप्रख्यमम्बरं सागरोपमम् ।
सागरं चाम्बरं चेति निर्विशेषमदृश्यत ॥८३॥
83. sāgaraṃ cāmbaraprakhyamambaraṃ sāgaropamam ,
sāgaraṃ cāmbaraṃ ceti nirviśeṣamadṛśyata.
83. sāgaram ca ambaraprakhyam ambaram sāgaropamam
sāgaram ca ambaram ca iti nirviśeşam adṛśyata
83. sāgaram ambaraprakhyam ca ambaram

83. The ocean appeared like the sky, and the sky resembled the ocean. Thus, the ocean and the sky were seen as indistinguishable.
संपृक्तं नभसा ह्यम्भः संपृक्तं च नभो ऽम्भसा ।
तादृग्रूपे स्म दृश्येते तारा रत्नसमाकुले ॥८४॥
84. saṃpṛktaṃ nabhasā hyambhaḥ saṃpṛktaṃ ca nabho'mbhasā ,
tādṛgrūpe sma dṛśyete tārā ratnasamākule.
84. saṃpṛktam nabhasā hi ambhaḥ saṃpṛktam ca nabhaḥ
ambhasā tādṛgrūpe sma dṛśyete tārāratnasamākule

84. Indeed, the water was mingled with the sky, and the sky was mingled with the water. They both appeared in such a form, filled with jewel-like stars.
समुत्पतितमेघस्य वीच्चि मालाकुलस्य च ।
विशेषो न द्वयोरासीत् सागरस्याम्बरस्य च ॥८५॥
85. samutpatitameghasya vīcci mālākulasya ca ,
viśeṣo na dvayorāsīt sāgarasyāmbarasya ca.

85. There was no distinction between the two, the ocean and the sky, (both appearing) with rising clouds and crowded with rows of waves.
अन्योन्यैराहताः सक्ताः सस्वनुर्भीमनिःस्वनाः ।
ऊर्मयः सिन्धुराजस्य महाभेर्य इवाहवे ॥८६॥
86. anyonyairāhatāḥ saktāḥ sasvanurbhīmaniḥsvanāḥ ,
ūrmayaḥ sindhurājasya mahābherya ivāhave.
86. anyonyaiḥ āhatāḥ saktāḥ sasvanuḥ bhīmaniḥsvanāḥ
ūrmayaḥ sindhurājasya mahābheryaḥ iva āhave
86. The waves of the ocean, crashing into one another and joining, roared with a dreadful sound, like great war-drums in battle.
रत्नौघजलसंनादं विषक्तमिव वायुना ।
उत्पतन्तमिव क्रुद्धं यादोगणसमाकुलम् ॥८७॥
87. ratnaughajalasaṃnādaṃ viṣaktamiva vāyunā ,
utpatantamiva kruddhaṃ yādogaṇasamākulam.

utpatantam iva kruddham yādogaṇasamākulam
87. The ocean, which had the roar of masses of gems and water, appeared as if clinging to the wind, as if leaping up in rage, and was crowded with hosts of aquatic creatures.
ददृशुस्ते महात्मानो वाताहतजलाशयम् ।
अनिलोद्धूतमाकाशे प्रवल्गतमिवोर्मिभिः ।
भ्रान्तोर्मिजलसंनादं प्रलोलमिव सागरम् ॥८८॥
88. dadṛśuste mahātmāno vātāhatajalāśayam ,
aniloddhūtamākāśe pravalgatamivormibhiḥ ,
bhrāntormijalasaṃnādaṃ pralolamiva sāgaram.

88. Those great souls (mahātman) saw the ocean, its waters agitated by the wind, tossed high into the sky, as if leaping with its waves. It resonated with the roar of its turbulent waters and swirling waves, appearing exceedingly restless.
