व्यतीतायां तु शर्वर्यामादित्यस्योदये ततः ।
समेत्य राजकर्तारः सभामीयुर्द्विजातयः ॥१॥

1. After that night had passed and the sun had risen, the twice-born (dvijātayaḥ) who appoint kings assembled and entered the council hall.
मार्कण्डेयो ऽथ मौद्गल्यो वामदेवश्च काश्यपः ।
कात्ययनो गौतमश्च जाबालिश्च महायशाः ॥२॥
2. mārkaṇḍeyo'tha maudgalyo vāmadevaśca kāśyapaḥ ,
kātyayano gautamaśca jābāliśca mahāyaśāḥ.

2. Then, the highly renowned (mahāyaśāḥ) Markandeya, Maudgalya, Vamadeva, Kasyapa, Katyayana, Gautama, and Jabali were present.
एते द्विजाः सहामात्यैः पृथग्वाचमुदीरयन् ।
वसिष्ठमेवाभिमुखाः श्रेष्ठो राजपुरोहितम् ॥३॥
3. ete dvijāḥ sahāmātyaiḥ pṛthagvācamudīrayan ,
vasiṣṭhamevābhimukhāḥ śreṣṭho rājapurohitam.
3. ete dvijāḥ saha amātyaiḥ pṛthak vācam udīrayan
vasiṣṭham eva abhimukhāḥ śreṣṭhaḥ rājapurohitam

3. These twice-born (dvijāḥ), accompanied by their ministers, each spoke their words, facing towards Vasiṣṭha, the chief royal priest.
अतीता शर्वरी दुःखं या नो वर्षशतोपमा ।
अस्मिन्पञ्चत्वमापन्ने पुत्रशोकेन पार्थिवे ॥४॥
4. atītā śarvarī duḥkhaṃ yā no varṣaśatopamā ,
asminpañcatvamāpanne putraśokena pārthive.

asmin pañcatvam āpanne putraśokena pārthive

4. That night, which seemed like a hundred years to us due to its misery, has passed, as this king (pārthiva) has reached the state of death (pañcatva) from grief over his son.
स्वर्गतश्च महाराजो रामश्चारण्यमाश्रितः ।
लक्ष्मणश्चापि तेजस्वी रामेणैव गतः सह ॥५॥
5. svargataśca mahārājo rāmaścāraṇyamāśritaḥ ,
lakṣmaṇaścāpi tejasvī rāmeṇaiva gataḥ saha.
5. svargataḥ ca mahārājaḥ rāmaḥ ca araṇyam āśritaḥ
lakṣmaṇaḥ ca api tejasvī rāmeṇa eva gataḥ saha
5. mahārājaḥ svargataḥ ca rāmaḥ ca araṇyam āśritaḥ

5. The great king (Dasharatha) has departed for heaven, and Rama has resorted to the forest. The energetic Lakshmana too has gone along with Rama alone.
उभौ भरतशत्रुघ्नौ क्केकयेषु परंतपौ ।
पुरे राजगृहे रम्ये मातामहनिवेशने ॥६॥
6. ubhau bharataśatrughnau kkekayeṣu paraṃtapau ,
pure rājagṛhe ramye mātāmahaniveśane.

6. Both Bharata and Shatrughna, who are tormentors of foes, are among the Kekayas, in the beautiful city of Rajagriha, at their maternal grandfather's residence.
इक्ष्वाकूणामिहाद्यैव कश्चिद् राजा विधीयताम् ।
अराजकं हि नो राष्ट्रं न विनाशमवाप्नुयात् ॥७॥
7. ikṣvākūṇāmihādyaiva kaścid rājā vidhīyatām ,
arājakaṃ hi no rāṣṭraṃ na vināśamavāpnuyāt.
7. ikṣvākuṇām iha adya eva kaścit rājā vidhīyatām
arājakaṃ hi naḥ rāṣṭram na vināśam avāpnuyāt

7. Among the Ikshvakus, let some king be appointed here today itself, for our kingdom is certainly without a king and should not meet with destruction.
नाराजले जनपदे विद्युन्माली महास्वनः ।
अभिवर्षति पर्जन्यो महीं दिव्येन वारिणा ॥८॥
8. nārājale janapade vidyunmālī mahāsvanaḥ ,
abhivarṣati parjanyo mahīṃ divyena vāriṇā.

8. In a kingless country, the rain-bearing cloud, adorned with lightning and great thunderous roar, does not shower the earth with divine water.
नाराजके जनपदे बीजमुष्टिः प्रकीर्यते ।
नाराकके पितुः पुत्रो भार्या वा वर्तते वशे ॥९॥
9. nārājake janapade bījamuṣṭiḥ prakīryate ,
nārākake pituḥ putro bhāryā vā vartate vaśe.
9. na arājake janapade bījamuṣṭiḥ prakīryate | na
arājake pituḥ putraḥ bhāryā vā vartate vaśe

9. In a country without a ruler, seeds are not sown. Nor, in a land without a king, does a son obey his father, or a wife remain under control.
अराजके धनं नास्ति नास्ति भार्याप्यराजके ।
इदमत्याहितं चान्यत् कुतः सत्यमराजके ॥१०॥
10. arājake dhanaṃ nāsti nāsti bhāryāpyarājake ,
idamatyāhitaṃ cānyat kutaḥ satyamarājake.
10. arājake dhanam na asti na asti bhāryā api arājake
| idam atyāhitam ca anyat kutaḥ satyam arājake
10. arājake dhanam na asti arājake bhāryā api na asti
idam ca anyat atyāhitam arājake satyam kutaḥ
10. In a country without a ruler, there is no wealth; nor is there a wife in such a state. This is another great calamity. How, then, can truth exist in a kingless land?
नाराजके जनपदे कारयन्ति सभां नराः ।
उद्यानानि च रम्याणि हृष्टाः पुण्यगृहाणि च ॥११॥
11. nārājake janapade kārayanti sabhāṃ narāḥ ,
udyānāni ca ramyāṇi hṛṣṭāḥ puṇyagṛhāṇi ca.
11. na arājake janapade kārayanti sabhām narāḥ
| udyānāni ca ramyāṇi hṛṣṭāḥ puṇyagṛhāṇi ca
11. arājake janapade narāḥ sabhām na kārayanti hṛṣṭāḥ
narāḥ ramyāṇi udyānāni ca puṇyagṛhāṇi ca na kārayanti
11. In a country without a ruler, people do not hold assemblies. Nor do joyful people construct beautiful gardens or auspicious homes.
नाराजके जनपदे यज्ञशीला द्विजातयः ।
सत्राण्यन्वासते दान्ता ब्राह्मणाः संशितव्रताः ॥१२॥
12. nārājake janapade yajñaśīlā dvijātayaḥ ,
satrāṇyanvāsate dāntā brāhmaṇāḥ saṃśitavratāḥ.
12. na arājake janapade yajñaśīlāḥ dvijātayaḥ
satrāṇi anvāsate dāntāḥ brāhmaṇāḥ saṃśitavratāḥ
12. arājake janapade yajñaśīlāḥ dvijātayaḥ dāntāḥ

12. In a country lacking a ruler, self-controlled Brahmins, firm in their vows, and devoted to Vedic rituals (yajña), do not perform prolonged Vedic rituals (satra).
नाराजके जनपदे प्रभूतनटनर्तकाः ।
उत्सवाश्च समाजाश्च वर्धन्ते राष्ट्रवर्धनाः ॥१३॥
13. nārājake janapade prabhūtanaṭanartakāḥ ,
utsavāśca samājāśca vardhante rāṣṭravardhanāḥ.
13. na arājake janapade prabhūtanatanartakāḥ
utsavāḥ ca samājāḥ ca vardhante rāṣṭravardhanāḥ

13. In a kingless land, abundant actors and dancers do not flourish, nor do nation-enhancing festivals and social gatherings thrive.
नारजके जनपदे सिद्धार्था व्यवहारिणः ।
कथाभिरनुरज्यन्ते कथाशीलाः कथाप्रियैः ॥१४॥
14. nārajake janapade siddhārthā vyavahāriṇaḥ ,
kathābhiranurajyante kathāśīlāḥ kathāpriyaiḥ.
14. na arājake janapade siddhārthāḥ vyavahāriṇaḥ
kathābhiḥ anurajyante kathāśīlāḥ kathāpriyaiḥ
14. arājake janapade vyavahāriṇaḥ na siddhārthāḥ ca
kathāśīlāḥ kathābhiḥ kathāpriyaiḥ na anurajyante
14. In a kingless land, merchants do not achieve their objectives. Nor are people who enjoy stories delighted by fellow story-lovers with conversations.
नाराजके जनपदे वाहनैः शीघ्रगामिभिः ।
नरा निर्यान्त्यरण्यानि नारीभिः सह कामिनः ॥१५॥
15. nārājake janapade vāhanaiḥ śīghragāmibhiḥ ,
narā niryāntyaraṇyāni nārībhiḥ saha kāminaḥ.
15. na arājake janapade vāhanaiḥ śīghragāmibhiḥ
narāḥ niryānti araṇyāni nārībhiḥ saha kāminaḥ
15. arājake janapade kāminaḥ narāḥ nārībhiḥ saha

15. In a kingless land, enamored men do not journey to the forests with women in fast-moving vehicles.
नाराकजे जनपदे धनवन्तः सुरक्षिताः ।
शेरते विवृत द्वाराः कृषिगोरक्षजीविनः ॥१६॥
16. nārākaje janapade dhanavantaḥ surakṣitāḥ ,
śerate vivṛta dvārāḥ kṛṣigorakṣajīvinaḥ.
16. na arākaje janapade dhanavantaḥ surakṣitāḥ
śerate vivṛtadvārāḥ kṛṣigorakṣajīvinaḥ
16. arākaje janapade dhanavantaḥ na surakṣitāḥ

16. In a kingless land, the wealthy are not well-protected. Nor do those who sustain themselves by agriculture and cattle-rearing sleep with open doors.
नाराजके जनपदे वणिजो दूरगामिनः ।
गच्छन्ति क्षेममध्वानं बहुपुण्यसमाचिताः ॥१७॥
17. nārājake janapade vaṇijo dūragāminaḥ ,
gacchanti kṣemamadhvānaṃ bahupuṇyasamācitāḥ.
17. na arājake janapade vaṇijaḥ dūragāminaḥ
gacchanti kṣemam adhvānam bahupuṇyasamācitāḥ
17. arājake janapade dūragāminaḥ bahupuṇyasamācitāḥ

17. In a country without a ruler, merchants who travel far, even those endowed with abundant virtue, do not safely traverse their paths.
नाराजके जनपदे चरत्येकचरो वशी ।
भावयन्नात्मनात्मानं यत्रसायंगृहो मुनिः ॥१८॥
18. nārājake janapade caratyekacaro vaśī ,
bhāvayannātmanātmānaṃ yatrasāyaṃgṛho muniḥ.
18. na arājake janapade carati ekacaraḥ vaśī
bhāvayan ātmanā ātmānam yatrasāyaṃgṛhaḥ muniḥ
18. arājake janapade yatrasāyaṃgṛhaḥ ekacaraḥ
vaśī muniḥ ātmanā ātmānam bhāvayan na carati
18. In a country without a ruler, a self-controlled (vaśī) solitary sage (muniḥ), whose home is wherever evening finds him, does not wander contemplating the Self (ātman) by the self (ātman).
नाराजके जनपदे योगक्षेमं प्रवर्तते ।
न चाप्यराजके सेना शत्रून् विषहते युधि ॥१९॥
19. nārājake janapade yogakṣemaṃ pravartate ,
na cāpyarājake senā śatrūn viṣahate yudhi.
19. na arājake janapade yogakṣemam pravartate na
ca api arājake senā śatrūn viṣahate yudhi
19. arājake janapade yogakṣemam na pravartate ca
api arājake senā yudhi śatrūn na viṣahate
19. In a country without a ruler, welfare and security (yogakṣema) do not thrive. Nor, in a rulerless state, does an army overcome its enemies in battle.
यथा ह्यनुदका नद्यो यथा वाप्यतृणं वनम् ।
अगोपाला यथा गावस्तथा राष्ट्रमराजकम् ॥२०॥
20. yathā hyanudakā nadyo yathā vāpyatṛṇaṃ vanam ,
agopālā yathā gāvastathā rāṣṭramarājakam.
20. yathā hi anudakāḥ nadyaḥ yathā vā api atṛṇam
vanam agopālāḥ yathā gāvaḥ tathā rāṣṭram arājakam
20. hi yathā nadyaḥ anudakāḥ,
vā api yathā vanam atṛṇam,
yathā gāvaḥ agopālāḥ,
tathā rāṣṭram arājakam
20. Indeed, just as rivers are without water, and just as a forest is without grass, and just as cows are without herdsmen, so too is a nation without a ruler.
नाराजके जनपदे स्वकं भवति कस्य चित् ।
मत्स्या इव नरा नित्यं भक्षयन्ति परस्परम् ॥२१॥
21. nārājake janapade svakaṃ bhavati kasya cit ,
matsyā iva narā nityaṃ bhakṣayanti parasparam.
21. na arājake janapade svakam bhavati kasya cit
matsyāḥ iva narāḥ nityam bhakṣayanti parasparam
21. janapade arājake kasya cit svakam na bhavati
narāḥ matsyāḥ iva nityam parasparam bhakṣayanti
21. In a land without a ruler, nothing belongs to anyone. People constantly devour each other, just like fish.
येहि संभिन्नमर्यादा नास्तिकाश्छिन्नसंशयाः ।
ते ऽपि भावाय कल्पन्ते राजदण्डनिपीडिताः ॥२२॥
22. yehi saṃbhinnamaryādā nāstikāśchinnasaṃśayāḥ ,
te'pi bhāvāya kalpante rājadaṇḍanipīḍitāḥ.
22. ye hi saṃbhinna-maryādāḥ nāstikāḥ chinna-saṃśayāḥ
te api bhāvāya kalpante rājadaṇḍa-nipīḍitāḥ
22. ye hi saṃbhinna-maryādāḥ nāstikāḥ chinna-saṃśayāḥ
te api rājadaṇḍa-nipīḍitāḥ bhāvāya kalpante
22. Those who have transgressed the bounds of propriety (maryādā), who are non-believers, and whose uncertainties have been removed, even they become fit for well-being when disciplined by royal punishment.
अहो तम इवेदं स्यान्न प्रज्ञायेत किं चन ।
राजा चेन्न भवेंल् लोके विभजन् साध्वसाधुनी ॥२३॥
23. aho tama ivedaṃ syānna prajñāyeta kiṃ cana ,
rājā cenna bhaveṃl loke vibhajan sādhvasādhunī.
23. aho tamaḥ iva idam syāt na prajñāyeta kim cana
rājā cet na bhavet loke vibhajan sādhv-asādhunī
23. aho rājā cet loke sādhv-asādhunī vibhajan na
bhavet idam tamaḥ iva syāt kim cana na prajñāyeta
23. Alas, it would be as if darkness (tamas) prevailed, and nothing at all would be discernible, if there were no king in the world to distinguish between the good and the bad.
जीवत्यपि महाराजे तवैव वचनं वयम् ।
नातिक्रमामहे सर्वे वेलां प्राप्येव सागरः ॥२४॥
24. jīvatyapi mahārāje tavaiva vacanaṃ vayam ,
nātikramāmahe sarve velāṃ prāpyeva sāgaraḥ.
24. jīvati api mahārāje tava eva vacanam vayam na
atikramāmahe sarve velām prāpya iva sāgaraḥ
24. mahārāje jīvati api vayam sarve tava eva
vacanam na atikramāmahe sāgaraḥ velām prāpya iva
24. Even while the great king is alive, we all obey your command. We do not transgress, just as the ocean, even when it reaches its shore, does not overflow it.
स नः समीक्ष्य द्विजवर्यवृत्तं नृपं विना राज्यमरण्यभूतम् ।
कुमारमिक्ष्वाकुसुतं वदान्यं त्वमेव राजानमिहाभिषिञ्चय ॥२५॥
25. sa naḥ samīkṣya dvijavaryavṛttaṃ nṛpaṃ vinā rājyamaraṇyabhūtam ,
kumāramikṣvākusutaṃ vadānyaṃ tvameva rājānamihābhiṣiñcaya.
25. saḥ naḥ samīkṣya dvijavaryavṛttam
nṛpam vinā rājyam araṇyabhūtam
kumāram ikṣvākusutam vadānyam
tvam eva rājānam iha abhiṣiñcaya
25. tvam eva saḥ naḥ dvijavaryavṛttam
nṛpam vinā rājyam araṇyabhūtam
samīkṣya iha vadānyam ikṣvākusutam
kumāram rājānam abhiṣiñcaya
25. You, having observed our plight and the exemplary conduct (dharma) of the best Brahmins, and [seeing] the kingdom without a king having become a wilderness, should yourself consecrate the generous prince, the son of Ikṣvāku, as king here.
