अथ रामश्च सीता च लक्ष्मणश्च कृताञ्जलिः ।
उपसंगृह्य राजानं चक्रुर्दीनाः प्रदक्षिणम् ॥१॥

1. Then, Rama, Sita, and Lakshmana, with folded hands and looking distressed, approached the king and circumambulated him.
तं चापि समनुज्ञाप्य धर्मज्ञः सीतया सह ।
राघवः शोकसंमूढो जननीमभ्यवादयत् ॥२॥
2. taṃ cāpi samanujñāpya dharmajñaḥ sītayā saha ,
rāghavaḥ śokasaṃmūḍho jananīmabhyavādayat.
2. tam ca api samanuśjñāpya dharmajñaḥ sītayā saha

2. And having also taken leave of him (the king), Rama (rāghava), who knew the natural law (dharma) and was bewildered by grief, along with Sita, bowed to his mother.
अन्वक्षं लक्ष्मणो भ्रातुः कौसल्यामभ्यवादयत् ।
अथ मातुः सुमित्राया जग्राह चरणौ पुनः ॥३॥
3. anvakṣaṃ lakṣmaṇo bhrātuḥ kausalyāmabhyavādayat ,
atha mātuḥ sumitrāyā jagrāha caraṇau punaḥ.

3. Lakshmana, following his brother, saluted Kaushalya. Then, he again grasped the feet (caraṇau) of his (own) mother Sumitra.
तं वन्दमानं रुदती माता सौमित्रिमब्रवीत् ।
हितकामा महाबाहुं मूर्ध्न्युपाघ्राय लक्ष्मणम् ॥४॥
4. taṃ vandamānaṃ rudatī mātā saumitrimabravīt ,
hitakāmā mahābāhuṃ mūrdhnyupāghrāya lakṣmaṇam.

4. Weeping (rudatī), his mother, desiring his welfare (hitakāmā), kissed the mighty-armed Lakshmana (saumitrim) on the head, and spoke to him (Lakshmana) as he was bowing.
सृष्टस्त्वं वनवासाय स्वनुरक्तः सुहृज्जने ।
रामे प्रमादं मा कार्षीः पुत्र भ्रातरि गच्छति ॥५॥
5. sṛṣṭastvaṃ vanavāsāya svanuraktaḥ suhṛjjane ,
rāme pramādaṃ mā kārṣīḥ putra bhrātari gacchati.
5. sṛṣṭaḥ tvam vanavāsāya svanuraktaḥ suhṛjjane
rāme pramādam mā kārṣīḥ putra bhrātari gacchati

5. You are meant for dwelling in the forest, deeply devoted to your dear ones. My son, do not be negligent towards your brother Rāma, who is now departing.
व्यसनी वा समृद्धो वा गतिरेष तवानघ ।
एष लोके सतां धर्मो यज्ज्येष्ठवशगो भवेत् ॥६॥
6. vyasanī vā samṛddho vā gatireṣa tavānagha ,
eṣa loke satāṃ dharmo yajjyeṣṭhavaśago bhavet.
6. vyasanī vā samṛddhaḥ vā gatiḥ eṣaḥ tava anagha
eṣaḥ loke satām dharmaḥ yat jyeṣṭhavaśagaḥ bhavet
6. anagha tvam vyasanī vā samṛddhaḥ vā eṣaḥ tava gatiḥ
loke satām eṣaḥ dharmaḥ yat jyeṣṭhavaśagaḥ bhavet
6. Whether you are in distress or prosperous, this is your proper course, O sinless one. This is indeed the natural law (dharma) for virtuous people in the world: that one should be obedient to their elder brother.
इदं हि वृत्तमुचितं कुलस्यास्य सनातनम् ।
दानं दीक्षा च यज्ञेषु तनुत्यागो मृधेषु च ॥७॥
7. idaṃ hi vṛttamucitaṃ kulasyāsya sanātanam ,
dānaṃ dīkṣā ca yajñeṣu tanutyāgo mṛdheṣu ca.
7. idam hi vṛttam ucitam kulasya asya sanātanam
dānam dīkṣā ca yajñeṣu tanutyāgaḥ mṛdheṣu ca
7. hi idam asya kulasya ucitam sanātanam vṛttam
yajñeṣu dānam ca dīkṣā ca mṛdheṣu ca tanutyāgaḥ
7. Indeed, this is the appropriate and eternal conduct for this family: giving (dāna) and consecration (dīkṣā) in sacred fire rituals (yajña), and sacrificing one's body in battles.
रामं दशरथं विद्धि मां विद्धि जनकात्मजाम् ।
अयोध्यामटवीं विद्धि गच्छ तात यथासुखम् ॥८॥
8. rāmaṃ daśarathaṃ viddhi māṃ viddhi janakātmajām ,
ayodhyāmaṭavīṃ viddhi gaccha tāta yathāsukham.
8. rāmam daśaratham viddhi mām viddhi janakātmajām
Ayodhyām aṭavīm viddhi gaccha tāta yathāsukham
8. tvam rāmam daśaratham viddhi mām janakātmajām viddhi
aṭavīm Ayodhyām viddhi tāta yathāsukham gaccha
8. Consider Rāma to be Daśaratha, and know me to be Janaka's daughter. Regard the forest as Ayodhyā. Go forth, my dear one, as comfortably as you wish.
ततः सुमन्त्रः काकुत्स्थं प्राञ्जलिर्वाक्यमब्रवीत् ।
विनीतो विनयज्ञश्च मातलिर्वासवं यथा ॥९॥
9. tataḥ sumantraḥ kākutsthaṃ prāñjalirvākyamabravīt ,
vinīto vinayajñaśca mātalirvāsavaṃ yathā.
9. tataḥ sumantraḥ kākutstham prāñjaliḥ vākyam
abravīt vinītaḥ vinayajñaḥ ca mātaliḥ vāsavam yathā
9. tataḥ sumantraḥ prāñjaliḥ vinītaḥ ca vinayajñaḥ

9. Then Sumantra, with folded hands, humbly and respectfully, spoke these words to Rama (Kakutstha), just as Matali (Indra's charioteer) would speak to Indra (Vasava).
रथमारोह भद्रं ते राजपुत्र महायशः ।
क्षिप्रं त्वां प्रापयिष्यामि यत्र मां राम वक्ष्यसि ॥१०॥
10. rathamāroha bhadraṃ te rājaputra mahāyaśaḥ ,
kṣipraṃ tvāṃ prāpayiṣyāmi yatra māṃ rāma vakṣyasi.
10. ratham āroha bhadram te rājaputra mahāyaśaḥ
kṣipram tvām prāpayiṣyāmi yatra mām rāma vakṣyasi
10. rājaputra mahāyaśaḥ te bhadram ratham āroha rāma
yatra mām vakṣyasi kṣipram tvām prāpayiṣyāmi
10. O prince (rājaputra) of great renown, may good fortune be with you! Please ascend the chariot. I will swiftly take you, O Rama, wherever you instruct me to go.
चतुर्दश हि वर्षाणि वस्तव्यानि वने त्वया ।
तान्युपक्रमितव्यानि यानि देव्यासि चोदितः ॥११॥
11. caturdaśa hi varṣāṇi vastavyāni vane tvayā ,
tānyupakramitavyāni yāni devyāsi coditaḥ.
11. caturdaśa hi varṣāṇi vastavyāni vane tvayā
tāni upakramitavyāni yāni devyā asi coditaḥ
11. hi caturdaśa varṣāṇi tvayā vane vastavyāni
yāni devyā coditaḥ asi tāni upakramitavyāni
11. Indeed, fourteen years are to be spent by you in the forest. You must undertake those (years of exile) for which you have been commanded by the queen (Kaikeyi).
तं रथं सूर्यसंकाशं सीता हृष्टेन चेतसा ।
आरुरोह वरारोहा कृत्वालंकारमात्मनः ॥१२॥
12. taṃ rathaṃ sūryasaṃkāśaṃ sītā hṛṣṭena cetasā ,
āruroha varārohā kṛtvālaṃkāramātmanaḥ.
12. tam ratham sūryasaṃkāśam sītā hṛṣṭena cetasā
āruroha varārohā kṛtvā alaṃkāram ātmanaḥ
12. hṛṣṭena cetasā varārohā sītā ātmanaḥ alaṃkāram

12. Sita, with a joyful heart and adorned with ornaments (kṛtvālaṃkāram ātmanaḥ), the lady with excellent hips (varārohā), ascended that chariot, which shone like the sun (sūryasaṃkāśam).
तथैवायुधजातानि भ्रातृभ्यां कवचानि च ।
रथोपस्थे प्रतिन्यस्य सचर्मकठिनं च तत् ॥१३॥
13. tathaivāyudhajātāni bhrātṛbhyāṃ kavacāni ca ,
rathopasthe pratinyasya sacarmakaṭhinaṃ ca tat.
13. tathā eva āyudhajātāni bhrātṛbhyām kavacāni ca
rathopasthe pratinyasya sacarmakaṭhinaṃ ca tat
13. tathā eva bhrātṛbhyām āyudhajātāni kavacāni ca

13. And similarly, having placed back all the types of weapons and armors belonging to the two brothers, along with the leather shields, in the chariot.
सीतातृतीयानारूढान्दृष्ट्वा धृष्टमचोदयत् ।
सुमन्त्रः संमतानश्वान् वायुवेगसमाञ्जवे ॥१४॥
14. sītātṛtīyānārūḍhāndṛṣṭvā dhṛṣṭamacodayat ,
sumantraḥ saṃmatānaśvān vāyuvegasamāñjave.
14. sītātṛtīyān ārūḍhān dṛṣṭvā dhṛṣṭam acodayat
sumantraḥ saṃmatān aśvān vāyuvegasamān ajave
14. sumantraḥ sītātṛtīyān ārūḍhān dṛṣṭvā dhṛṣṭam

14. Having seen them mounted, with Sītā as the third companion, Sumantra boldly urged on the highly esteemed horses, which were as swift as the wind.
प्रयाते तु महारण्यं चिररात्राय राघवे ।
बभूव नगरे मूर्च्छा बलमूर्च्छा जनस्य च ॥१५॥
15. prayāte tu mahāraṇyaṃ cirarātrāya rāghave ,
babhūva nagare mūrcchā balamūrcchā janasya ca.
15. prayāte tu mahāraṇyaṃ cirarātrāya rāghave
babhūva nagare mūrcchā balamūrcchā janasya ca

15. Indeed, when Rāghava (Rama) departed to the great forest for a long sojourn, a profound faintness and loss of strength (mūrcchā) overcame the city and its people.
तत् समाकुलसंभ्रान्तं मत्तसंकुपित द्विपम् ।
हयशिञ्जितनिर्घोषं पुरमासीन्महास्वनम् ॥१६॥
16. tat samākulasaṃbhrāntaṃ mattasaṃkupita dvipam ,
hayaśiñjitanirghoṣaṃ puramāsīnmahāsvanam.
16. tat samākulasambhāntam mattasaṅkupitadvipam
hayaśiñjitanirghoṣaṃ puram āsīt mahāsvanam
16. tat puram samākulasambhāntam mattasaṅkupitadvipam

16. That city became greatly agitated and bewildered, filled with intoxicated and enraged elephants, resounding with the neighing of horses, and altogether very noisy.
ततः सबालवृद्धा सा पुरी परमपीडिता ।
राममेवाभिदुद्राव घर्मार्तः सलिलं यथा ॥१७॥
17. tataḥ sabālavṛddhā sā purī paramapīḍitā ,
rāmamevābhidudrāva gharmārtaḥ salilaṃ yathā.
17. tataḥ sabālavṛddhā sā purī paramapīḍitā rāmam
eva abhidudrāva gharmārtaḥ salilam yathā

17. Then, that city, including its children and elders, greatly distressed, rushed towards Rama himself, just as one afflicted by heat rushes towards water.
पार्श्वतः पृष्ठतश्चापि लम्बमानास्तदुन्मुखाः ।
बाष्पपूर्णमुखाः सर्वे तमूचुर्भृशदुःखिताः ॥१८॥
18. pārśvataḥ pṛṣṭhataścāpi lambamānāstadunmukhāḥ ,
bāṣpapūrṇamukhāḥ sarve tamūcurbhṛśaduḥkhitāḥ.
18. pārśvataḥ pṛṣṭhataḥ ca api lambamānāḥ tatunmukhāḥ
bāṣpapūrṇamukhāḥ sarve tam ūcuḥ bhṛśaduḥkhitāḥ
18. pārśvataḥ pṛṣṭhataḥ ca api lambamānāḥ tatunmukhāḥ
bāṣpapūrṇamukhāḥ bhṛśaduḥkhitāḥ sarve tam ūcuḥ
18. Clinging to him from the sides and also from behind, all of them, greatly distressed, with faces full of tears and directed towards him, spoke to him.
संयच्छ वाजिनां रश्मीन् सूत याहि शनैः शनैः ।
मुखं द्रक्ष्यामि रामस्य दुर्दर्शं नो भविष्यति ॥१९॥
19. saṃyaccha vājināṃ raśmīn sūta yāhi śanaiḥ śanaiḥ ,
mukhaṃ drakṣyāmi rāmasya durdarśaṃ no bhaviṣyati.
19. saṃyaccha vājinām raśmīn sūta yāhi śanaiḥ śanaiḥ
mukham drakṣyāmi rāmasya durdarśam naḥ bhaviṣyati
19. sūta vājinām raśmīn saṃyaccha śanaiḥ śanaiḥ yāhi

19. Charioteer! Hold back the reins of the horses; go slowly, slowly. I wish to see Rama's face, for it will be difficult for us to see him again.
आयसं हृदयं नूनं राममातुरसंशयम् ।
यद्देवगर्भप्रतिमे वनं याति न भिद्यते ॥२०॥
20. āyasaṃ hṛdayaṃ nūnaṃ rāmamāturasaṃśayam ,
yaddevagarbhapratime vanaṃ yāti na bhidyate.
20. āyasam hṛdayam nūnam rāmam āturasamśayam
yat devagarbhapratime vanam yāti na bhidyate
20. nūnam rāmam hṛdayam āyasam āturasamśayam
yat devagarbhapratime vanam yāti na bhidyate
20. Surely, Rama's heart is made of iron, beyond any doubt. Because, though he resembles a divine child, he goes to the forest, and yet his heart does not break.
कृतकृत्या हि वैदेही छायेवानुगता पतिम् ।
न जहाति रता धर्मे मेरुमर्कप्रभा यथा ॥२१॥
21. kṛtakṛtyā hi vaidehī chāyevānugatā patim ,
na jahāti ratā dharme merumarkaprabhā yathā.
21. kṛtakṛtyā hi vaidehī chāyā iva anugatā patim
na jahāti ratā dharme merum arkaprabhā yathā
21. hi vaidehī kṛtakṛtyā chāyā iva patim anugatā
ratā dharme na jahāti yathā arkaprabhā merum
21. Indeed, Vaidehi, having perfectly fulfilled her duties, follows her husband like a shadow. Devoted to her intrinsic nature (dharma), she does not abandon him, just as the sun's radiance never leaves Mount Meru.
अहो लक्ष्मण सिद्धार्थः सततां प्रियवादिनम् ।
भ्रातरं देवसंकाशं यस्त्वं परिचरिष्यसि ॥२२॥
22. aho lakṣmaṇa siddhārthaḥ satatāṃ priyavādinam ,
bhrātaraṃ devasaṃkāśaṃ yastvaṃ paricariṣyasi.
22. aho lakṣmaṇa siddhārthaḥ satatam priyavādinam
bhrātaram devasaṃkāśam yaḥ tvam paricariṣyasi
22. aho lakṣmaṇa yaḥ tvam satatam priyavādinam devasaṃkāśam
bhrātaram paricariṣyasi (saḥ) siddhārthaḥ (asi)
22. O Lakshmana, you who will constantly serve your god-like brother, who is always a kind speaker, are truly one whose purpose is accomplished.
महत्येषा हि ते सिद्धिरेष चाभ्युदयो महान् ।
एष स्वर्गस्य मार्गश्च यदेनमनुगच्छसि ।
एवं वदन्तस्ते सोढुं न शेकुर्बाष्पमागतम् ॥२३॥
23. mahatyeṣā hi te siddhireṣa cābhyudayo mahān ,
eṣa svargasya mārgaśca yadenamanugacchasi ,
evaṃ vadantaste soḍhuṃ na śekurbāṣpamāgatam.
23. mahatī eṣā hi te siddhiḥ eṣaḥ ca
abhyudayaḥ mahān eṣaḥ svargasya mārgaḥ
ca yat enam anugacchasi evam vadantaḥ
te soḍhum na śekuḥ bāṣpam āgatam
23. hi eṣā mahatī siddhiḥ te (asti) ca eṣaḥ
mahān abhyudayaḥ (asti) ca eṣaḥ svargasya
mārgaḥ (asti) yat enam anugacchasi evam
vadantaḥ te āgatam bāṣpam soḍhum na śekuḥ
23. Indeed, this is a great accomplishment for you, and this is great prosperity. This is also the path to heaven, because you follow him. As they spoke thus, they were unable to hold back their welling tears.
अथ राजा वृतः स्त्रीभिर्दीनाभिर्दीनचेतनः ।
निर्जगाम प्रियं पुत्रं द्रक्ष्यामीति ब्रुवन् गृहात् ॥२४॥
24. atha rājā vṛtaḥ strībhirdīnābhirdīnacetanaḥ ,
nirjagāma priyaṃ putraṃ drakṣyāmīti bruvan gṛhāt.
24. atha rājā vṛtaḥ strībhiḥ dīnābhiḥ dīnacetanaḥ
nirjagāma priyam putram drakṣyāmi iti bruvan gṛhāt
24. atha dīnābhiḥ strībhiḥ vṛtaḥ dīnacetanaḥ rājā
"priyam putram drakṣyāmi" iti bruvan gṛhāt nirjagāma
24. Then, surrounded by distressed women, the king, with a dejected mind, departed from his house, saying, "I will see my beloved son."
शुश्रुवे चाग्रतः स्त्रीणां रुदन्तीनां महास्वनः ।
यथा नादः करेणूनां बद्धे महति कुञ्जरे ॥२५॥
25. śuśruve cāgrataḥ strīṇāṃ rudantīnāṃ mahāsvanaḥ ,
yathā nādaḥ kareṇūnāṃ baddhe mahati kuñjare.
25. śuśruve ca agrataḥ strīṇām rudantīnām mahāsvanaḥ
yathā nādaḥ kareṇūnām baddhe mahati kuñjare
25. ca rudantīnām strīṇām agrataḥ mahāsvanaḥ śuśruve
yathā kareṇūnām nādaḥ mahati kuñjare baddhe
25. A loud lament was heard from the weeping women in front, just like the cries of female elephants when a large male elephant is captured.
पिता च राजा काकुत्स्थः श्रीमान् सन्नस्तदा बभौ ।
परिपूर्णः शशी काले ग्रहेणोपप्लुतो यथा ॥२६॥
26. pitā ca rājā kākutsthaḥ śrīmān sannastadā babhau ,
paripūrṇaḥ śaśī kāle graheṇopapluto yathā.

26. The glorious King Daśaratha (kākutstha), the father, appeared then completely dejected, just like a full moon obscured by an eclipse at the proper time.
ततो हलहलाशब्दो जज्ञे रामस्य पृष्ठतः ।
नराणां प्रेक्ष्य राजानं सीदन्तं भृशदुःखितम् ॥२७॥
27. tato halahalāśabdo jajñe rāmasya pṛṣṭhataḥ ,
narāṇāṃ prekṣya rājānaṃ sīdantaṃ bhṛśaduḥkhitam.
27. tataḥ halahalāśabdaḥ jajñe Rāmasya pṛṣṭhataḥ
narāṇām prekṣya rājānam sīdantam bhṛśaduḥkhitam
27. tataḥ Rāmasya pṛṣṭhataḥ narāṇām rājānam sīdantam
bhṛśaduḥkhitam prekṣya halahalāśabdaḥ jajñe
27. Then, from behind Rama, a great clamor arose from the people, who had seen the king despairing and deeply distressed.
हा रामेति जनाः के चिद् राममातेति चापरे ।
अन्तःपुरं समृद्धं च क्रोशन्तं पर्यदेवयन् ॥२८॥
28. hā rāmeti janāḥ ke cid rāmamāteti cāpare ,
antaḥpuraṃ samṛddhaṃ ca krośantaṃ paryadevayan.
28. hā Rāma iti janāḥ ke cit Rāmamātā iti ca apare
antaḥpuram samṛddham ca krośantam paryadevayan
28. ke cit janāḥ hā Rāma iti apare ca Rāmamātā iti
antaḥpuram samṛddham ca krośantam paryadevayan
28. Some people cried out, "Alas, Rama!", while others exclaimed, "Rama's mother!". And the women of the opulent inner apartment (antaḥpura), wailing loudly, lamented deeply.
अन्वीक्षमाणो रामस्तु विषण्णं भ्रान्तचेतसं ।
राजानं मातरं चैव ददर्शानुगतौ पथि ।
धर्मपाशेन संक्षिप्तः प्रकाशं नाभ्युदैक्षत ॥२९॥
29. anvīkṣamāṇo rāmastu viṣaṇṇaṃ bhrāntacetasaṃ ,
rājānaṃ mātaraṃ caiva dadarśānugatau pathi ,
dharmapāśena saṃkṣiptaḥ prakāśaṃ nābhyudaikṣata.
29. anvīkṣamāṇaḥ rāmaḥ tu viṣaṇṇam
bhrāntacetasam rājānam mātaram ca eva
dadarśa anugatau pathi dharmapāśena
saṃkṣiptaḥ prakāśam na abhyudaikṣata
29. rāmaḥ tu anvīkṣamāṇaḥ viṣaṇṇam
bhrāntacetasam rājānam mātaram ca eva
pathi anugatau dadarśa dharmapāśena
saṃkṣiptaḥ prakāśam na abhyudaikṣata
29. Rāma, looking closely, saw his father, the king, dejected and bewildered in mind, and his mother following on the path. Restricted by the fetters of duty (dharma), he did not look up at the light.
पदातिनौ च यानार्हावदुःखार्हौ सुखोचितौ ।
दृष्ट्वा संचोदयामास शीघ्रं याहीति सारथिम् ॥३०॥
30. padātinau ca yānārhāvaduḥkhārhau sukhocitau ,
dṛṣṭvā saṃcodayāmāsa śīghraṃ yāhīti sārathim.

30. Seeing them - both on foot, though deserving of carriages, not deserving of suffering, and accustomed to comfort - he urged the charioteer, "Go quickly!"
न हि तत् पुरुषव्याघ्रो दुःखदं दर्शनं पितुः ।
मातुश्च सहितुं शक्तस्तोत्रार्दित इव द्विपः ॥३१॥
31. na hi tat puruṣavyāghro duḥkhadaṃ darśanaṃ pituḥ ,
mātuśca sahituṃ śaktastotrārdita iva dvipaḥ.
31. na hi tat puruṣavyāghraḥ duḥkhadam darśanam pituḥ
mātuḥ ca sahitum śaktaḥ totrārditaḥ iva dvipaḥ
31. na hi puruṣavyāghraḥ tat pituḥ mātuḥ ca duḥkhadam
darśanam totrārditaḥ dvipaḥ iva sahitum śaktaḥ
31. For that tiger among men (puruṣavyāghra), Rāma, was indeed unable to endure that distressing sight of his father and mother, just as an elephant, tormented by a goad, cannot.
तथा रुदन्तीं कौसल्यां रथं तमनुधावतीम् ।
क्रोशन्तीं राम रामेति हा सीते लक्ष्मणेति च ।
असकृत् प्रैक्षत तदा नृत्यन्तीमिव मातरम् ॥३२॥
32. tathā rudantīṃ kausalyāṃ rathaṃ tamanudhāvatīm ,
krośantīṃ rāma rāmeti hā sīte lakṣmaṇeti ca ,
asakṛt praikṣata tadā nṛtyantīmiva mātaram.
32. tathā rudantīm kausalyām ratham tam
anudhāvatīm krośantīm rāma rāma
iti hā sīte lakṣmaṇa iti ca asakṛt
praikṣata tadā nṛtyantīm iva mātaram

32. In the same way, he repeatedly looked at his mother, Kausalya, who was weeping and running after that chariot, crying out, "Rāma! Rāma! Alas, Sītā! Lakṣmaṇa!" - he watched her as if she were dancing at that moment.
तिष्ठेति राजा चुक्रोष याहि याहीति राघवः ।
सुमन्त्रस्य बभूवात्मा चक्रयोरिव चान्तरा ॥३३॥
33. tiṣṭheti rājā cukroṣa yāhi yāhīti rāghavaḥ ,
sumantrasya babhūvātmā cakrayoriva cāntarā.
33. tiṣṭha iti rājā cukroṣa yāhi yāhi iti rāghavaḥ
sumantrasya babhūva ātmā cakrayoḥ iva ca antarā

33. The king cried out, "Stop!" while Rama, the descendant of Raghu, said, "Go, go!" Sumantra's soul (ātman) became, as it were, caught between two wheels.
नाश्रौषमिति राजानमुपालब्धो ऽपि वक्ष्यसि ।
चिरं दुःखस्य पापिष्ठमिति रामस्तमब्रवीत् ॥३४॥
34. nāśrauṣamiti rājānamupālabdho'pi vakṣyasi ,
ciraṃ duḥkhasya pāpiṣṭhamiti rāmastamabravīt.
34. na aśrauṣam iti rājānam upālabdhaḥ api vakṣyasi
ciram duḥkhasya pāpiṣṭham iti rāmaḥ tam abravīt
34. rāmaḥ tam abravīt na aśrauṣam iti rājānam upālabdhaḥ
api vakṣyasi ciram duḥkhasya pāpiṣṭham iti
34. Rama said to him, "Even if you are reproached by the king, you will say, 'I did not hear him.' Thus, this most grievous sorrow will be prolonged for a long time."
रामस्य स वचः कुर्वन्ननुज्ञाप्य च तं जनम् ।
व्रजतो ऽपि हयाञ् शीघ्रं चोदयामास सारथिः ॥३५॥
35. rāmasya sa vacaḥ kurvannanujñāpya ca taṃ janam ,
vrajato'pi hayāñ śīghraṃ codayāmāsa sārathiḥ.
35. rāmasya saḥ vacaḥ kurvan anujñāpya ca tam janam
vrajataḥ api hayān śīghram codayām āsa sārathiḥ

35. Obeying Rama's command and bidding farewell to that crowd, the charioteer (Sumantra) urged the horses on quickly, even as they were already moving.
न्यवर्तत जनो राज्ञो रामं कृत्वा प्रदक्षिणम् ।
मनसाप्यश्रुवेगैश्च न न्यवर्तत मानुषम् ॥३६॥
36. nyavartata jano rājño rāmaṃ kṛtvā pradakṣiṇam ,
manasāpyaśruvegaiśca na nyavartata mānuṣam.
36. nyavartata janaḥ rājñaḥ rāmam kṛtvā pradakṣiṇam
manasā api aśruvegaiḥ ca na nyavartata mānuṣam
36. rājñaḥ janaḥ rāmam pradakṣiṇam kṛtvā nyavartata

36. The king's people returned after circumambulating Rama. Yet, their human hearts (mānuṣam), with their minds and torrents of tears, did not return.
यमिच्छेत् पुनरायान्तं नैनं दूरमनुव्रजेत् ।
इत्यमात्या महाराजमूचुर्दशरथं वचः ॥३७॥
37. yamicchet punarāyāntaṃ nainaṃ dūramanuvrajet ,
ityamātyā mahārājamūcurdaśarathaṃ vacaḥ.
37. yam icchet punarāyāntam na enam dūram anuvrajet
iti amātyāḥ mahārājam ūcuḥ daśaratham vacaḥ
37. amātyāḥ mahārājam daśaratham iti vacaḥ ūcuḥ: yam punarāyāntam icchet,
enam dūram na anuvrajet.
37. "One should not follow far a person whom one wishes to return." Thus, the ministers spoke these words to the great King Dasharatha.
तेषां वचः सर्वगुणोपपन्नं प्रस्विन्नगात्रः प्रविषण्णरूपः ।
निशम्य राजा कृपणः सभार्यो व्यवस्थितस्तं सुतमीक्षमाणः ॥३८॥
38. teṣāṃ vacaḥ sarvaguṇopapannaṃ prasvinnagātraḥ praviṣaṇṇarūpaḥ ,
niśamya rājā kṛpaṇaḥ sabhāryo vyavasthitastaṃ sutamīkṣamāṇaḥ.

38. Having heard their words, which were endowed with all good qualities, the king, whose body was sweating and whose appearance was deeply dejected, stood miserably with his wife, gazing at that son.
