While they were narrating stories and desiring an auspicious victory, the night swiftly passed for the noble-minded (Shatrughna).

Then, in that clear morning, at that time, that powerful demon, impelled by the craving for prey, emerged from the city.

Meanwhile, the valiant Śatrughna, having crossed the Yamunā river, stood at the gate of Madhupura with his bow in hand.

Then, when midday arrived, that demon, whose actions were cruel, came, carrying the burden of many thousands of living beings.

5.
Then (the demon) saw Śatrughna, standing at the gate, fully armed. Thereupon, the demon said to him, 'What will you do with this?'

6.
O vilest of men, I have devoured thousands of such armed beings out of rage. Why then do you desire death?

7.
O vilest of men, this meal of mine is still incomplete. O evil-minded one, how did you, having come, enter my mouth yourself?

While he was speaking thus and laughing repeatedly, Shatrughna, endowed with great valor, shed tears out of rage.

9.
From that great-souled Shatrughna, who was overcome by rage, indeed, fiery rays of light burst forth from all his limbs.

10.
Greatly enraged, Shatrughna said to that demon: "O evil-minded one, I desire to engage in single combat with you."

"Grant me single combat, for I desire to fight. You are an enemy to all beings, and you will not escape alive from me."

As he spoke thus, the demon, as if laughing, replied to that best of men: "Fortunately, O evil-minded one, you have arrived!"

14.
O evil-minded one, O vilest of men! My maternal aunt's brother, the demon named Rāvaṇa, was killed by Rāma on account of a woman.

15.
And all that, the destruction of Rāvaṇa's lineage, was forgiven by me. And you all, especially, were also forgiven by me, even though you placed disrespect before me.

16.
Indeed, not all of you were killed by me; rather, you were scorned like mere grass. (This applies to) those who have existed, those who will exist, and you too, O vilest of men!

18.
Then Shatrughna said to him: 'Where will you go, remaining alive, escaping me? An enemy, even if he has arrived weak, should not be released by a resolute person.'

Indeed, he who gives an opportunity to the enemy through a confused intellect is ruined due to his foolishness, just like a coward.
