कैलासं लङ्घयित्वाथ दशग्रीवः सराक्षसः ।
आससाद महातेजा इन्द्रलोकं निशाचरः ॥१॥

1. Then, having crossed Mount Kailāsa, that immensely powerful night-wanderer, Daśagrīva, accompanied by his demons, reached the world of Indra.
तस्य राक्षससैन्यस्य समन्तादुपयास्यतः ।
देवलोकं ययौ शब्दो भिद्यमानार्णवोपमः ॥२॥
2. tasya rākṣasasainyasya samantādupayāsyataḥ ,
devalokaṃ yayau śabdo bhidyamānārṇavopamaḥ.

2. The roar of that demon army, approaching from all directions, reached the divine realm (devaloka), resembling the sound of a churning ocean.
श्रुत्वा तु रावणं प्राप्तमिन्द्रः संचलितासनः ।
अब्रवीत्तत्र तान्देवान् सर्वानेव समागतान् ॥३॥
3. śrutvā tu rāvaṇaṃ prāptamindraḥ saṃcalitāsanaḥ ,
abravīttatra tāndevān sarvāneva samāgatān.

3. When he heard that Rāvaṇa had arrived, Indra, whose seat was disturbed, spoke to all the gods who had assembled there.
आदित्यान् सवसून् रुद्रान् विश्वान् साध्यान्मरुद्गणान् ।
सज्जीभवत युद्धार्थं रावणस्य दुरात्मनः ॥४॥
4. ādityān savasūn rudrān viśvān sādhyānmarudgaṇān ,
sajjībhavata yuddhārthaṃ rāvaṇasya durātmanaḥ.

4. Adityas, along with the Vasus, Rudras, Viśvas, Sadhyas, and the Marut hosts! Prepare yourselves for battle against the evil-minded Rāvaṇa.
एवमुक्तास्तु शक्रेण देवाः शक्रसमा युधि ।
संनह्यन्त महासत्त्वा युद्धश्रद्धासमन्विताः ॥५॥
5. evamuktāstu śakreṇa devāḥ śakrasamā yudhi ,
saṃnahyanta mahāsattvā yuddhaśraddhāsamanvitāḥ.
5. evam uktāḥ tu śakreṇa devāḥ śakrasamāḥ yudhi
saṃnahyanta mahāsattvāḥ yuddhaśraddhāsamanvitāḥ

5. Thus addressed by Śakra (Indra), the mighty gods, who were like Śakra (Indra) in battle, prepared themselves, filled with enthusiasm (śraddhā) for the fight.
स तु दीनः परित्रस्तो महेन्द्रो रावणं प्रति ।
विष्णोः समीपमागत्य वाक्यमेतदुवाच ह ॥६॥
6. sa tu dīnaḥ paritrasto mahendro rāvaṇaṃ prati ,
viṣṇoḥ samīpamāgatya vākyametaduvāca ha.
6. saḥ tu dīnaḥ paritrastaḥ mahendraḥ rāvaṇam
prati viṣṇoḥ samīpam āgatya vākyam etat uvāca ha
6. tu saḥ dīnaḥ paritrastaḥ mahendraḥ rāvaṇam
prati viṣṇoḥ samīpam āgatya etat vākyam uvāca ha
6. But that distraught and greatly frightened Mahendra (Indra), concerning Rāvaṇa, came near Viṣṇu and spoke these words.
विष्णो कथं करिष्यामो महावीर्यपराक्रम ।
असौ हि बलवान् रक्षो युद्धार्थमभिवर्तते ॥७॥
7. viṣṇo kathaṃ kariṣyāmo mahāvīryaparākrama ,
asau hi balavān rakṣo yuddhārthamabhivartate.
7. viṣṇo katham kariṣyāmaḥ mahāvīryaparākrama
asau hi balavān rakṣaḥ yuddhārtham abhivartate
7. viṣṇo mahāvīryaparākrama katham kariṣyāmaḥ hi

7. “O Viṣṇu, O one of great valor and might, how shall we proceed? This demon (rakṣas) is indeed very powerful and is advancing for battle.”
वरप्रदानाद्बलवान्न खल्वन्येन हेतुना ।
तच्च सत्यं हि कर्तव्यं वाक्यं देव प्रजापतेः ॥८॥
8. varapradānādbalavānna khalvanyena hetunā ,
tacca satyaṃ hi kartavyaṃ vākyaṃ deva prajāpateḥ.
8. varapradānāt balavān na khalu anyena hetunā tat
ca satyam hi kartavyam vākyam deva prajāpateḥ
8. balavān varapradānāt na khalu anyena hetunā ca
deva tat prajāpateḥ vākyam hi satyam kartavyam
8. “He is powerful due to a granted boon, certainly not by any other means. And that promise of Prajāpati (Brahma), O god, must indeed be upheld as truth.”
तद् यथा नमुचिर्वृत्रो बलिर्नरकशम्बरौ ।
त्वन्मतं समवष्टभ्य यथा दग्धास्तथा कुरु ॥९॥
9. tad yathā namucirvṛtro balirnarakaśambarau ,
tvanmataṃ samavaṣṭabhya yathā dagdhāstathā kuru.
9. tat yathā namuciḥ vṛtraḥ baliḥ narakaśambarau
tvat-matam samavaṣṭabhya yathā dagdhāḥ tathā kuru
9. tat yathā namuciḥ vṛtraḥ baliḥ narakaśambarau
tvat-matam samavaṣṭabhya dagdhāḥ tathā kuru
9. “Therefore, just as Namuci, Vṛtra, Bali, Naraka, and Śambara were annihilated by upholding your decree, so too, act accordingly.”
न ह्यन्यो देव देवानामापत्सु सुमहाबल ।
गतिः परायणं वास्ति त्वामृते पुरुषोत्तम ॥१०॥
10. na hyanyo deva devānāmāpatsu sumahābala ,
gatiḥ parāyaṇaṃ vāsti tvāmṛte puruṣottama.
10. na hi anyaḥ deva devānām āpattsu sumahābala
gatiḥ parāyaṇam vā asti tvām ṛte puruṣottama
10. devadeva devānām sumahābala puruṣottama,
āpattsu tvām ṛte anyaḥ gatiḥ vā parāyaṇam na hi asti
10. O Lord of gods, O immensely powerful one, in times of calamity, there is certainly no other refuge or ultimate resort apart from you, O supreme person (puruṣa).
त्वं हि नारायणः श्रीमान्पद्मनाभः सनातनः ।
त्वयाहं स्थापितश्चैव देवराज्ये सनातने ॥११॥
11. tvaṃ hi nārāyaṇaḥ śrīmānpadmanābhaḥ sanātanaḥ ,
tvayāhaṃ sthāpitaścaiva devarājye sanātane.
11. tvam hi nārāyaṇaḥ śrīmān padmanābhaḥ sanātanaḥ
tvayā aham sthāpitaḥ ca eva devarājye sanātane
11. tvam hi śrīmān padmanābhaḥ sanātanaḥ nārāyaṇaḥ (asi).
ca eva aham tvayā sanātane devarājye sthāpitaḥ
11. You are indeed Nārāyaṇa, glorious, Padmanābha, the eternal one. Furthermore, it is by you that I have been established in the eternal kingdom of the gods.
तदाख्याहि यथातत्त्वं देवदेव मम स्वयम् ।
असिचक्रसहायस्त्वं युध्यसे संयुगे रिपुम् ॥१२॥
12. tadākhyāhi yathātattvaṃ devadeva mama svayam ,
asicakrasahāyastvaṃ yudhyase saṃyuge ripum.
12. tadā ākhyāhi yathātattvam devadeva mama svayam
asicakrasahāyaḥ tvam yudhyase saṃyuge ripum
12. devadeva,
tadā yathātattvam svayam mama ākhyāhi [yathā] asicakrasahāyaḥ tvam saṃyuge ripum yudhyase
12. O Lord of gods, therefore, tell me yourself, exactly as it is, how you, aided by your sword and discus, fight the enemy in battle.
एवमुक्तः स शक्रेण देवो नारायणः प्रभुः ।
अब्रवीन्न परित्रासः कार्यस्ते श्रूयतां च मे ॥१३॥
13. evamuktaḥ sa śakreṇa devo nārāyaṇaḥ prabhuḥ ,
abravīnna paritrāsaḥ kāryaste śrūyatāṃ ca me.
13. evam uktaḥ saḥ śakreṇa devaḥ nārāyaṇaḥ prabhuḥ
abravīt na paritrāsaḥ kāryaḥ te śrūyatām ca me
13. saḥ prabhuḥ devaḥ nārāyaṇaḥ evam śakreṇa uktaḥ
abravīt: "te paritrāsaḥ na kāryaḥ ca me śrūyatām"
13. Thus addressed by Śakra, the divine Lord Nārāyaṇa said, "You should not feel fear; now, listen to my words."
न तावदेष दुर्वृत्तः शक्यो दैवतदानवैः ।
हन्तुं युधि समासाद्य वरदानेन दुर्जयः ॥१४॥
14. na tāvadeṣa durvṛttaḥ śakyo daivatadānavaiḥ ,
hantuṃ yudhi samāsādya varadānena durjayaḥ.
14. na tāvat eṣa durvṛttaḥ śakyaḥ daivata-dānavaiḥ
hantum yudhi samāsādya varadānena durjayaḥ
14. eṣa durvṛttaḥ varadānena samāsādya durjayaḥ,
tāvat daivata-dānavaiḥ yudhi hantum na śakyaḥ
14. This evil-doer, having been granted a boon, is unconquerable; he cannot be killed in battle even by gods or demons, even if they confront him.
सर्वथा तु महत् कर्म करिष्यति बलोत्कटः ।
रक्षः पुत्रसहायो ऽसौ दृष्टमेतन्निसर्गतः ॥१५॥
15. sarvathā tu mahat karma kariṣyati balotkaṭaḥ ,
rakṣaḥ putrasahāyo'sau dṛṣṭametannisargataḥ.
15. sarvathā tu mahat karma kariṣyati balotkaṭaḥ
rakṣaḥ putra-sahāyaḥ asau dṛṣṭam etat nisargataḥ
15. tu sarvathā asau balotkaṭaḥ rakṣaḥ putra-sahāyaḥ mahat karma kariṣyati.
etat nisargataḥ dṛṣṭam.
15. However, this immensely powerful one, supported by the sons of the rākṣasas, will certainly accomplish great deeds. This is evident by his intrinsic nature (nisarga).
ब्रवीषि यत्तु मां शक्र संयुगे योत्स्यसीति ह ।
नैवाहं प्रतियोत्स्ये तं रावणं राक्षसाधिपम् ॥१६॥
16. bravīṣi yattu māṃ śakra saṃyuge yotsyasīti ha ,
naivāhaṃ pratiyotsye taṃ rāvaṇaṃ rākṣasādhipam.
16. bravīṣi yat tu mām śakra saṃyuge yotsyasi iti ha
na eva aham pratiyotsye tam rāvaṇam rākṣasādhipam
16. śakra,
yat tu mām saṃyuge yotsyasi iti ha bravīṣi,
(tat) na eva aham tam rāvaṇam rākṣasādhipam pratiyotsye.
16. O Śakra, what you say to me, "you will indeed fight in battle," is not true. I will certainly not fight against that Rāvaṇa, the king of the rākṣasas.
अनिहत्य रिपुं विष्णुर्न हि प्रतिनिवर्तते ।
दुर्लभश्चैष कामो ऽद्य वरमासाद्य राक्षसे ॥१७॥
17. anihatya ripuṃ viṣṇurna hi pratinivartate ,
durlabhaścaiṣa kāmo'dya varamāsādya rākṣase.
17. anihatya ripum viṣṇuḥ na hi pratinivartate
durlabhaḥ ca eṣa kāmaḥ adya varam āsādya rākṣase
17. viṣṇuḥ ripum anihatya hi na pratinivartate.
ca adya varam āsādya rākṣase eṣa kāmaḥ durlabhaḥ.
17. Viṣṇu certainly does not return without having slain his enemy. Therefore, this desire (to escape death), given that the rākṣasa has obtained a boon, is now difficult for him to achieve.
प्रतिजानामि देवेन्द्र त्वत्समीपं शतक्रतो ।
राक्षसस्याहमेवास्य भविता मृत्युकारणम् ॥१८॥
18. pratijānāmi devendra tvatsamīpaṃ śatakrato ,
rākṣasasyāhamevāsya bhavitā mṛtyukāraṇam.
18. pratijānāmi deva indra tvat samīpam śatakrato
rākṣasasya aham eva asya bhavitā mṛtyukāraṇam
18. deva indra śatakrato tvat samīpam pratijānāmi
aham eva asya rākṣasasya mṛtyukāraṇam bhavitā
18. O chief of gods, O Indra, performer of a hundred (Vedic rituals) [kratu], I vow to you that I myself will become the cause of death for this demon.
अहमेनं वधिष्यामि रावणं ससुतं युधि ।
देवतास्तोषयिष्यामि ज्ञात्वा कालमुपस्थितम् ॥१९॥
19. ahamenaṃ vadhiṣyāmi rāvaṇaṃ sasutaṃ yudhi ,
devatāstoṣayiṣyāmi jñātvā kālamupasthitam.
19. aham enam vadhiṣyāmi rāvaṇam sasutam yudhi
devatāḥ toṣayiṣyāmi jñātvā kālam upasthitam
19. aham enam sasutam rāvaṇam yudhi vadhiṣyāmi
kālam upasthitam jñātvā devatāḥ toṣayiṣyāmi
19. I will kill this Rāvaṇa along with his son in battle. I will satisfy the gods, recognizing that the opportune time has come.
एतस्मिन्नन्तरे नादः शुश्रुवे रजनीक्षये ।
तस्य रावणसैन्यस्य प्रयुद्धस्य समन्ततः ॥२०॥
20. etasminnantare nādaḥ śuśruve rajanīkṣaye ,
tasya rāvaṇasainyasya prayuddhasya samantataḥ.
20. etasmin antare nādaḥ śuśruve rajanīkṣaye
tasya rāvaṇasainyasya prayuddhasya samantataḥ
20. etasmin antare rajanīkṣaye tasya rāvaṇasainyasya
samantataḥ prayuddhasya nādaḥ śuśruve
20. At this juncture, at the end of the night, a roar was heard all around, from that army of Rāvaṇa that had engaged in battle.
अथ युद्धं समभवद्देवराक्षसयोस्तदा ।
घोरं तुमुलनिर्ह्रादं नानाप्रहरणायुधम् ॥२१॥
21. atha yuddhaṃ samabhavaddevarākṣasayostadā ,
ghoraṃ tumulanirhrādaṃ nānāpraharaṇāyudham.
21. atha yuddham samabhavat devarākṣasayoḥ tadā
ghoram tumulanirhrādam nānāpraharanāyudham
21. atha tadā devarākṣasayoḥ ghoram tumulanirhrādam
nānāpraharanāyudham yuddham samabhavat
21. At that point, a terrible battle broke out between the gods and the demons, marked by a tumultuous roar and various types of weaponry.
एतस्मिन्नन्तरे शूरा राक्षसा घोरदर्शनाः ।
युद्धार्थमभ्यधावन्त सचिवा रावणाज्ञया ॥२२॥
22. etasminnantare śūrā rākṣasā ghoradarśanāḥ ,
yuddhārthamabhyadhāvanta sacivā rāvaṇājñayā.
22. etasmin antare śūrāḥ rākṣasāḥ ghoradarśanāḥ
yuddhārtham abhyadhāvanta sacivāḥ rāvaṇājñayā
22. etasmin antare rāvaṇājñayā śūrāḥ ghoradarśanāḥ
rākṣasāḥ sacivāḥ yuddhārtham abhyadhāvanta
22. In the meantime, fierce-looking demon warriors, who served as ministers, rushed forth for battle at Rāvaṇa's command.
मारीचश्च प्रहस्तश्च महापार्श्वमहोदरौ ।
अकम्पनो निकुम्भश्च शुकः सारण एव च ॥२३॥
23. mārīcaśca prahastaśca mahāpārśvamahodarau ,
akampano nikumbhaśca śukaḥ sāraṇa eva ca.
23. mārīcaḥ ca prahastaḥ ca mahāpārśvamahodarau
akampanaḥ nikumbhaḥ ca śukaḥ sāraṇaḥ eva ca
23. mārīcaḥ ca prahastaḥ ca mahāpārśvamahodarau
akampanaḥ nikumbhaḥ ca śukaḥ sāraṇaḥ eva ca
23. Mārīca, Prahasta, Mahāpārśva and Mahodara, Akampana, Nikumbha, Śuka, and also Sāraṇa.
संह्रादिर्धूमकेतुश्च महादंष्ट्रो महामुखः ।
जम्बुमाली महामाली विरूपाक्षश्च राक्षसः ॥२४॥
24. saṃhrādirdhūmaketuśca mahādaṃṣṭro mahāmukhaḥ ,
jambumālī mahāmālī virūpākṣaśca rākṣasaḥ.
24. saṃhrādiḥ dhūmaketuḥ ca mahādaṃṣṭraḥ mahāmukhaḥ
jambumālī mahāmālī virūpākṣaḥ ca rākṣasaḥ
24. saṃhrādiḥ dhūmaketuḥ ca mahādaṃṣṭraḥ mahāmukhaḥ
jambumālī mahāmālī virūpākṣaḥ ca rākṣasaḥ
24. Saṃhrādi, Dhūmaketu, Mahādaṃṣṭra, and Mahāmukha; Jambumālī, Mahāmālī, and the demon Virūpākṣa.
एतैः सर्वैर्महावीर्यैर्वृतो राक्षसपुंगवः ।
रावणस्यार्यकः सैन्यं सुमाली प्रविवेश ह ॥२५॥
25. etaiḥ sarvairmahāvīryairvṛto rākṣasapuṃgavaḥ ,
rāvaṇasyāryakaḥ sainyaṃ sumālī praviveśa ha.
25. etaiḥ sarvaiḥ mahāvīryaiḥ vṛtaḥ rākṣasapuṅgavaḥ
rāvaṇasya āryakaḥ sainyam sumālī praviveśa ha
25. etaiḥ sarvaiḥ mahāvīryaiḥ vṛtaḥ rāvaṇasya āryakaḥ
rākṣasapuṅgavaḥ sumālī sainyam praviveśa ha
25. Accompanied by all these exceedingly mighty ones, Sumālī, Rāvaṇa's maternal grandfather and the foremost of (rākṣasas), truly entered the army.
स हि देवगणान् सर्वान्नानाप्रहरणैः शितैः ।
विध्वंसयति संक्रुद्धः सह तैः क्षणदाचरैः ॥२६॥
26. sa hi devagaṇān sarvānnānāpraharaṇaiḥ śitaiḥ ,
vidhvaṃsayati saṃkruddhaḥ saha taiḥ kṣaṇadācaraiḥ.
26. saḥ hi devagaṇān sarvān nānāpraharaṇaiḥ śitaiḥ |
vidhvaṃsayati saṃkruddhaḥ saha taiḥ kṣaṇadācaraiḥ
26. saḥ saṃkruddhaḥ hi kṣaṇadācaraiḥ taiḥ saha śitaiḥ
nānāpraharaṇaiḥ sarvān devagaṇān vidhvaṃsayati
26. Indeed, enraged, he destroys all the hosts of gods with various sharp weapons, along with those night-prowling demons.
एतस्मिन्नन्तरे शूरो वसूनामष्टमो वसुः ।
सावित्र इति विख्यातः प्रविवेश महारणम् ॥२७॥
27. etasminnantare śūro vasūnāmaṣṭamo vasuḥ ,
sāvitra iti vikhyātaḥ praviveśa mahāraṇam.
27. etasmin antare śūraḥ vasūnām aṣṭamaḥ vasuḥ
| sāvitraḥ iti vikhyātaḥ praviveśa mahāraṇam
27. etasmin antare vasūnām aṣṭamaḥ vasuḥ sāvitraḥ
iti vikhyātaḥ śūraḥ mahāraṇam praviveśa
27. At this moment, a hero, the eighth Vasu among the Vasus, renowned as Sāvitra, entered the great battle.
ततो युद्धं समभवत् सुराणां राक्षसैः सह ।
क्रुद्धानां रक्षसां कीर्तिं समरेष्वनिवर्तिनाम् ॥२८॥
28. tato yuddhaṃ samabhavat surāṇāṃ rākṣasaiḥ saha ,
kruddhānāṃ rakṣasāṃ kīrtiṃ samareṣvanivartinām.
28. tataḥ yuddham samabhavat surāṇām rākṣasaiḥ saha
| kruddhānām rakṣasām kīrtim samareṣu anivartinām
28. tataḥ yuddham samabhavat surāṇām rākṣasaiḥ saha
kruddhānām samareṣu anivartinām rakṣasām kīrtim
28. Then a battle occurred between the gods and the demons, manifesting the glory of the enraged demons, who never retreated in battles.
ततस्ते राक्षसाः शूरा देवांस्तान् समरे स्थितान् ।
नानाप्रहरणैर्घोरैर्जघ्नुः शतसहस्रशः ॥२९॥
29. tataste rākṣasāḥ śūrā devāṃstān samare sthitān ,
nānāpraharaṇairghorairjaghnuḥ śatasahasraśaḥ.
29. tataḥ te rākṣasāḥ śūrā devān tān samare sthitān
| nānāpraharaṇaiḥ ghoraiḥ jaghnuḥ śatasahasraśaḥ
29. tataḥ te śūrā rākṣasāḥ samare sthitān tān devān
ghoraiḥ nānāpraharaṇaiḥ śatasahasraśaḥ jaghnuḥ
29. Then those heroic demons struck those gods who were standing in battle, with various terrible weapons, in hundreds of thousands.
सुरास्तु राक्षसान् घोरान्महावीर्यान् स्वतेजसा ।
समरे विविधैः शस्त्रैरनयन्यमसादनम् ॥३०॥
30. surāstu rākṣasān ghorānmahāvīryān svatejasā ,
samare vividhaiḥ śastrairanayanyamasādanam.
30. surāḥ tu rākṣasān ghorān mahāvīryān sva-tejasā
samare vividhaiḥ śastraiḥ anayan yama-sādanam
30. The gods, by their own power, dispatched the terrible, immensely powerful rākṣasas to the abode of Yama with various weapons in battle.
एतस्मिन्नन्तरे शूरः सुमाली नाम राक्षसः ।
नानाप्रहरणैः क्रुद्धो रणमेवाभ्यवर्तत ॥३१॥
31. etasminnantare śūraḥ sumālī nāma rākṣasaḥ ,
nānāpraharaṇaiḥ kruddho raṇamevābhyavartata.
31. etasmin antare śūraḥ sumālī nāma rākṣasaḥ
nānā-praharanaiḥ kruddhaḥ raṇam eva abhyavartata
31. At this juncture, a brave rākṣasa named Sumālī, enraged and wielding various weapons, advanced into the battle.
देवानां तद्बलं सर्वं नानाप्रहरणैः शितैः ।
विध्वंसयति संक्रुद्धो वायुर्जलधरानिव ॥३२॥
32. devānāṃ tadbalaṃ sarvaṃ nānāpraharaṇaiḥ śitaiḥ ,
vidhvaṃsayati saṃkruddho vāyurjaladharāniva.
32. devānām tat balam sarvam nānā-praharanaiḥ śitaiḥ
vidhvaṃsayati saṃkruddhaḥ vāyuḥ jaladharān iva
32. He, extremely enraged, destroyed that entire army of the gods, with their sharp and various weapons, just as the wind scatters clouds.
ते महाबाणवर्षैश्च शूलैः प्रासैश्च दारुणैः ।
पीड्यमानाः सुराः सर्वे न व्यतिष्ठन् समाहिताः ॥३३॥
33. te mahābāṇavarṣaiśca śūlaiḥ prāsaiśca dāruṇaiḥ ,
pīḍyamānāḥ surāḥ sarve na vyatiṣṭhan samāhitāḥ.
33. te mahā-bāṇa-varṣaiḥ ca śūlaiḥ prāsaiḥ ca dāruṇaiḥ
pīḍyamānāḥ surāḥ sarve na vyatiṣṭhan samāhitāḥ
33. Tormented by great volleys of arrows, and by terrible spears and javelins, all those gods could not stand firm or remain composed.
ततो विद्राव्यमाणेषु त्रिदशेषु सुमालिना ।
वसूनामष्टमो देवः सावित्रो व्यवतिष्ठत ॥३४॥
34. tato vidrāvyamāṇeṣu tridaśeṣu sumālinā ,
vasūnāmaṣṭamo devaḥ sāvitro vyavatiṣṭhata.

34. Then, as the gods were being put to flight by Sumāli, Sāvitra, the eighth deity among the Vasus, stood his ground.
संवृतः स्वैरनीकैस्तु प्रहरन्तं निशाचरम् ।
विक्रमेण महातेजा वारयामास संयुगे ॥३५॥
35. saṃvṛtaḥ svairanīkaistu praharantaṃ niśācaram ,
vikrameṇa mahātejā vārayāmāsa saṃyuge.

35. Surrounded by his own troops, the greatly mighty (Sāvitra) indeed checked that attacking night-prowler (Sumāli) with great valor in battle.
सुमत्तयोस्तयोरासीद् युद्धं लोके सुदारुणम् ।
सुमालिनो वसोश्चैव समरेष्वनिवर्तिनोः ॥३६॥
36. sumattayostayorāsīd yuddhaṃ loke sudāruṇam ,
sumālino vasoścaiva samareṣvanivartinoḥ.

sumālinaḥ vasoḥ ca eva samareṣu anivartinoḥ

36. Between those two, Sumāli and the Vasu (Sāvitra), both greatly enraged and never retreating in battles, there ensued a very terrible fight in the world.
ततस्तस्य महाबाणैर्वसुना सुमहात्मना ।
महान् स पन्नगरथः क्षणेन विनिपातितः ॥३७॥
37. tatastasya mahābāṇairvasunā sumahātmanā ,
mahān sa pannagarathaḥ kṣaṇena vinipātitaḥ.

37. Then, that great snake-chariot of his (Sumāli's), was instantly struck down by the very noble-minded Vasu (Sāvitra) with his mighty arrows.
हत्वा तु संयुगे तस्य रथं बाणशतैः शितैः ।
गदां तस्य वधार्थाय वसुर्जग्राह पाणिना ॥३८॥
38. hatvā tu saṃyuge tasya rathaṃ bāṇaśataiḥ śitaiḥ ,
gadāṃ tasya vadhārthāya vasurjagrāha pāṇinā.

38. Having destroyed his chariot in battle with hundreds of sharp arrows, Vasu then grasped a mace in his hand to kill him.
तां प्रदीप्तां प्रगृह्याशु कालदण्डनिभां शुभाम् ।
तस्य मूर्धनि सावित्रः सुमालेर्विनिपातयत् ॥३९॥
39. tāṃ pradīptāṃ pragṛhyāśu kāladaṇḍanibhāṃ śubhām ,
tasya mūrdhani sāvitraḥ sumālervinipātayat.

39. Quickly grasping that blazing, beautiful mace, which resembled the rod of Yama, Savitra struck it down on Sumali's head.
तस्य मूर्धनि सोल्काभा पतन्ती च तदा बभौ ।
सहस्राक्षसमुत्सृष्टा गिराविव महाशनिः ॥४०॥
40. tasya mūrdhani solkābhā patantī ca tadā babhau ,
sahasrākṣasamutsṛṣṭā girāviva mahāśaniḥ.

babhau sahasrākṣa-samutsṛṣṭā girau iva mahāśaniḥ

40. As it fell on his head, it shone like a meteor and appeared like a great thunderbolt hurled by Indra (sahasrākṣa) onto a mountain.
तस्य नैवास्थि कायो वा न मांसं ददृशे तदा ।
गदया भस्मसाद्भूतो रणे तस्मिन्निपातितः ॥४१॥
41. tasya naivāsthi kāyo vā na māṃsaṃ dadṛśe tadā ,
gadayā bhasmasādbhūto raṇe tasminnipātitaḥ.
41. tasya na eva asthi kāyaḥ vā na māṃsaṃ dadṛśe tadā
gadayā bhasmasāt-bhūtaḥ raṇe tasmin nipātitaḥ
41. tadā tasya asthi vā kāyaḥ vā māṃsaṃ na eva dadṛśe.
raṇe tasmin gadayā nipātitaḥ bhasmasāt-bhūtaḥ
41. Then, neither his bones nor his body nor his flesh was seen. Struck down in that battle by the mace, he had been reduced to ashes.
तं दृष्ट्वा निहतं संख्ये राक्षसास्ते समन्ततः ।
दुद्रुवुः सहिताः सर्वे क्रोशमाना महास्वनम् ॥४२॥
42. taṃ dṛṣṭvā nihataṃ saṃkhye rākṣasāste samantataḥ ,
dudruvuḥ sahitāḥ sarve krośamānā mahāsvanam.
42. tam dṛṣṭvā nihatam saṃkhye rākṣasāḥ te samantataḥ
dudruvuḥ sahitāḥ sarve krośamānāḥ mahāsvanam
42. Seeing him slain in battle, all those demons together fled from all sides, crying out with a great sound.
