तौ तथा युध्यमानौ तु समरे रामरावणौ ।
ददृशुः सर्वभूतानि विस्मितेनान्तरात्मना ॥१॥

2. And those two excellent chariots belonging to them, while devastating (the enemy) in battle, became terrible in appearance and focused on mutual destruction.
मण्डलानि च वीथीश्च गतप्रत्यागतानि च ।
दर्शयन्तौ बहुविधां सूतौ सारथ्यजां गतिम् ॥३॥
3. maṇḍalāni ca vīthīśca gatapratyāgatāni ca ,
darśayantau bahuvidhāṃ sūtau sārathyajāṃ gatim.

3. The two charioteers demonstrated their diverse charioteering skill by performing circular movements, weaving paths, and advancing and retreating maneuvers.
अर्दयन् रावणं रामो राघवं चापि रावणः ।
गतिवेगं समापन्नौ प्रवर्तन निवर्तने ॥४॥
4. ardayan rāvaṇaṃ rāmo rāghavaṃ cāpi rāvaṇaḥ ,
gativegaṃ samāpannau pravartana nivartane.

4. While Rāma afflicted Rāvaṇa and Rāvaṇa likewise afflicted Rāma, both exhibited great speed of movement in their advancing and retreating actions.
क्षिपतोः शरजालानि तयोस्तौ स्यन्दनोत्तमौ ।
चेरतुः संयुगमहीं सासारौ जलदाविव ॥५॥
5. kṣipatoḥ śarajālāni tayostau syandanottamau ,
ceratuḥ saṃyugamahīṃ sāsārau jaladāviva.

5. While those two were showering arrows, their two excellent chariots traversed the battleground like two clouds with showers.
दर्शयित्वा तदा तौ तु गतिं बहुविधां रणे ।
परस्परस्याभिमुखौ पुनरेव च तस्थतुः ॥६॥
6. darśayitvā tadā tau tu gatiṃ bahuvidhāṃ raṇe ,
parasparasyābhimukhau punareva ca tasthatuḥ.

6. Then, having exhibited many kinds of movements in the battle, the two of them stood facing each other once again.
धुरं धुरेण रथयोर्वक्त्रं वक्त्रेण वाजिनाम् ।
पताकाश्च पताकाभिः समेयुः स्थितयोस्तदा ॥७॥
7. dhuraṃ dhureṇa rathayorvaktraṃ vaktreṇa vājinām ,
patākāśca patākābhiḥ sameyuḥ sthitayostadā.

7. Then, as the two armies stood, the yokes of their chariots met with yokes, the faces of their horses met with faces, and their banners clashed with banners.
रावणस्य ततो रामो धनुर्मुक्तैः शितैः शरैः ।
चतुर्भिश्चतुरो दीप्तान् हयान्प्रत्यपसर्पयत् ॥८॥
8. rāvaṇasya tato rāmo dhanurmuktaiḥ śitaiḥ śaraiḥ ,
caturbhiścaturo dīptān hayānpratyapasarpayat.

8. Then, with four sharp arrows released from his bow, Rama caused Ravana's four splendid horses to retreat.
स क्रोधवशमापन्नो हयानामपसर्पणे ।
मुमोच निशितान्बाणान् राघवाय निशाचरः ॥९॥
9. sa krodhavaśamāpanno hayānāmapasarpaṇe ,
mumoca niśitānbāṇān rāghavāya niśācaraḥ.
9. saḥ krodhavaśam āpannaḥ hayānām apasarpaṇe
mumoca niśitān bāṇān rāghavāya niśācaraḥ
9. hayānām apasarpaṇe krodhavaśam āpannaḥ saḥ

9. Having fallen under the sway of anger due to the retreat of his horses, that night-roamer (niśācara) released keen arrows at Rama (rāghava).
सो ऽतिविद्धो बलवता दशग्रीवेण राघवः ।
जगाम न विकारं च न चापि व्यथितो ऽभवत् ॥१०॥
10. so'tividdho balavatā daśagrīveṇa rāghavaḥ ,
jagāma na vikāraṃ ca na cāpi vyathito'bhavat.
10. saḥ atividdhaḥ balavatā daśagrīveṇa rāghavaḥ
jagāma na vikāram ca na ca api vyathitaḥ abhavat
10. saḥ rāghavaḥ balavatā daśagrīveṇa atividdhaḥ

10. Though Rama (rāghava) was deeply wounded by the mighty Daśagrīva, he showed no change (of expression), nor did he become distressed.
चिक्षेप च पुनर्बाणान् वज्रपातसमस्वनान् ।
सारथिं वज्रहस्तस्य समुद्दिश्य निशाचरः ॥११॥
11. cikṣepa ca punarbāṇān vajrapātasamasvanān ,
sārathiṃ vajrahastasya samuddiśya niśācaraḥ.
11. cikṣepa ca punaḥ bāṇān vajrapātasamasvanān
sārathim vajrahastasya samuddiśya niśācaraḥ
11. The demon (niśācara) again hurled arrows, whose sound was like the impact of a thunderbolt, aiming at the charioteer of Indra, the thunderbolt-wielder.
मातलेस्तु महावेगाः शरीरे पतिताः शराः ।
न सूक्ष्ममपि संमोहं व्यथां वा प्रददुर्युधि ॥१२॥
12. mātalestu mahāvegāḥ śarīre patitāḥ śarāḥ ,
na sūkṣmamapi saṃmohaṃ vyathāṃ vā pradaduryudhi.
12. mātaleḥ tu mahāvegāḥ śarīre patitāḥ śarāḥ na
sūkṣmam api sammoham vyathām vā pradaduḥ yudhi
12. But the arrows, though swiftly falling on Mātali's body, caused not even a slight trace of confusion or pain in the battle.
तया धर्षणया क्रोद्धो मातलेर्न तथात्मनः ।
चकार शरजालेन राघवो विमुखं रिपुम् ॥१३॥
13. tayā dharṣaṇayā kroddho mātalerna tathātmanaḥ ,
cakāra śarajālena rāghavo vimukhaṃ ripum.
13. tayā dharṣaṇayā kruddhaḥ mātaleḥ na tathā
ātmanaḥ cakāra śarajālena rāghavaḥ vimukham ripum
13. Enraged by that assault upon Mātali, and not so much upon his own self (ātman), Rāghava (Rāma) made the enemy turn away with a shower of arrows.
विंशतिं त्रिंशतं षष्टिं शतशो ऽथ सहस्रशः ।
मुमोच राघवो वीरः सायकान् स्यन्दने रिपोः ॥१४॥
14. viṃśatiṃ triṃśataṃ ṣaṣṭiṃ śataśo'tha sahasraśaḥ ,
mumoca rāghavo vīraḥ sāyakān syandane ripoḥ.
14. viṃśatim triṃśatam ṣaṣṭim śataśaḥ atha sahasraśaḥ
mumoca rāghavaḥ vīraḥ sāyakān syandane ripoḥ
14. The heroic Rāghava (Rāma) then released twenty, thirty, sixty, hundreds, and even thousands of arrows at the enemy's chariot.
गदानां मुसलानां च परिघाणां च निस्वनैः ।
शराणां पुङ्खवातैश्च क्षुभिताः सप्तसागराः ॥१५॥
15. gadānāṃ musalānāṃ ca parighāṇāṃ ca nisvanaiḥ ,
śarāṇāṃ puṅkhavātaiśca kṣubhitāḥ saptasāgarāḥ.
15. gadānām musalānām ca parighāṇām ca nisvanaiḥ
śarāṇām puṅkhavātaiḥ ca kṣubhitāḥ saptasāgarāḥ

15. The seven oceans were agitated by the sounds of maces, pestles, and iron bars, and by the winds from the fletchings of arrows.
क्षुब्धानां सागराणां च पातालतलवासिनः ।
व्यथिताः पन्नगाः सर्वे दानवाश्च सहस्रशः ॥१६॥
16. kṣubdhānāṃ sāgarāṇāṃ ca pātālatalavāsinaḥ ,
vyathitāḥ pannagāḥ sarve dānavāśca sahasraśaḥ.
16. kṣubdhānām sāgarāṇām ca pātālatalavāsinaḥ
vyathitāḥ pannagāḥ sarve dānavāḥ ca sahasraśaḥ
16. kṣubdhānām sāgarāṇām ca pātālatalavāsinaḥ

16. Due to the agitated oceans, all the serpents and thousands of Dānavas residing in the netherworld (pātāla) were greatly distressed.
चकम्पे मेदिनी कृत्स्ना सशैलवनकानना ।
भास्करो निष्प्रभश्चाभून्न ववौ चापि मारुतः ॥१७॥
17. cakampe medinī kṛtsnā saśailavanakānanā ,
bhāskaro niṣprabhaścābhūnna vavau cāpi mārutaḥ.
17. cakampē medinī kṛtsnā saśailavanakānanā bhāskaraḥ
niṣprabhaḥ ca abhūt na vavau ca api mārutaḥ
17. kṛtsnā saśailavanakānanā medinī cakampē bhāskaraḥ
niṣprabhaḥ ca abhūt mārutaḥ ca api na vavau
17. The entire earth, including its mountains, forests, and groves, trembled. The sun lost its radiance, and even the wind ceased to blow.
ततो देवाः सगन्धर्वाः सिद्धाश्च परमर्षयः ।
चिन्तामापेदिरे सर्वे सकिंनरमहोरगाः ॥१८॥
18. tato devāḥ sagandharvāḥ siddhāśca paramarṣayaḥ ,
cintāmāpedire sarve sakiṃnaramahoragāḥ.
18. tataḥ devāḥ sagandharvāḥ siddhāḥ ca paramarṣayaḥ
cintām āpedire sarve sakiṃnaramaheragāḥ
18. tataḥ sagandharvāḥ siddhāḥ ca paramarṣayaḥ

18. Then, all the gods, along with the Gandharvas, the Siddhas, the great sages, the Kinnaras, and the great serpents, were filled with anxiety.
स्वस्ति गोब्राह्मणेभ्यो ऽस्तु लोकास्तिष्ठन्तु शाश्वताः ।
जयतां राघवः संख्ये रावणं राक्षसेश्वरम् ॥१९॥
19. svasti gobrāhmaṇebhyo'stu lokāstiṣṭhantu śāśvatāḥ ,
jayatāṃ rāghavaḥ saṃkhye rāvaṇaṃ rākṣaseśvaram.
19. svasti gobrahmaṇebhyaḥ astu lokāḥ tiṣṭhantu śāśvatāḥ
jayatām rāghavaḥ saṅkhye rāvaṇam rākṣaseśvaram
19. gobrahmāṇebhyaḥ svasti astu lokāḥ śāśvatāḥ tiṣṭhantu
rāghavaḥ saṅkhye rāvaṇam rākṣaseśvaram jayatām
19. May there be auspiciousness for cows and brahmins. May the worlds remain eternal. May Rāghava (Rāma) be victorious in battle against Rāvaṇa, the lord of the rākṣasas.
ततः क्रुद्धो महाबाहू रघूणां कीर्तिवर्धनः ।
संधाय धनुषा रामः क्षुरमाशीविषोपमम् ।
रावणस्य शिरो ऽच्छिन्दच्छ्रीमज्ज्वलितकुण्डलम् ॥२०॥
20. tataḥ kruddho mahābāhū raghūṇāṃ kīrtivardhanaḥ ,
saṃdhāya dhanuṣā rāmaḥ kṣuramāśīviṣopamam ,
rāvaṇasya śiro'cchindacchrīmajjvalitakuṇḍalam.
20. tataḥ kruddhaḥ mahābāhū raghūṇām
kīrtivardhanaḥ sandhāya dhanuṣā rāmaḥ
kṣuram āśīviṣopamam rāvaṇasya
śiraḥ acchindat śrīmatjvalitakuṇḍalam
20. tataḥ kruddhaḥ mahābāhū raghūṇām
kīrtivardhanaḥ rāmaḥ dhanuṣā āśīviṣopamam
kṣuram sandhāya rāvaṇasya
śrīmatjvalitakuṇḍalam śiraḥ acchindat
20. Then, the mighty-armed Rāma, who augmented the glory of the Raghus, strung his bow with a razor-sharp arrow, as deadly as a venomous snake, and severed Rāvaṇa's head, which was adorned with splendid, shining earrings.
तच्छिरः पतितं भूमौ दृष्टं लोकैस्त्रिभिस्तदा ।
तस्यैव सदृशं चान्यद् रावणस्योत्थितं शिरः ॥२१॥
21. tacchiraḥ patitaṃ bhūmau dṛṣṭaṃ lokaistribhistadā ,
tasyaiva sadṛśaṃ cānyad rāvaṇasyotthitaṃ śiraḥ.
21. tat śiraḥ patitam bhūmau dṛṣṭam lokaiḥ tribhiḥ tadā
tasya eva sadṛśam ca anyat rāvaṇasya utthitam śiraḥ
21. tat śiraḥ bhūmau patitam tadā tribhiḥ lokaiḥ dṛṣṭam
ca tasya eva sadṛśam anyat rāvaṇasya śiraḥ utthitam
21. That head, having fallen to the ground, was then seen by the three worlds. And another head of Rāvaṇa, similar to that very one, immediately appeared.
तत् क्षिप्रं क्षिप्रहस्तेन रामेण क्षिप्रकारिणा ।
द्वितीयं रावणशिरश्छिन्नं संयति सायकैः ॥२२॥
22. tat kṣipraṃ kṣiprahastena rāmeṇa kṣiprakāriṇā ,
dvitīyaṃ rāvaṇaśiraśchinnaṃ saṃyati sāyakaiḥ.
22. tat kṣipram kṣiprahastena rāmeṇa kṣiprakāriṇā
dvitīyam rāvaṇaśiraḥ chinnam saṃyati sāyakaiḥ
22. tat dvitīyam rāvaṇaśiraḥ kṣiprahastena kṣiprakāriṇā
rāmeṇa saṃyati sāyakaiḥ kṣipram chinnam
22. That second head of Rāvaṇa was quickly severed in battle by Rāma, who was swift-handed and swift-acting, using his arrows.
छिन्नमात्रं च तच्छीर्षं पुनरन्यत् स्म दृश्यते ।
तदप्यशनिसंकाशैश्छिन्नं रामेण सायकैः ॥२३॥
23. chinnamātraṃ ca tacchīrṣaṃ punaranyat sma dṛśyate ,
tadapyaśanisaṃkāśaiśchinnaṃ rāmeṇa sāyakaiḥ.
23. chinnamātram ca tat śīrṣam punaḥ anyat sma dṛśyate
tat api aśanisaṃkāśaiḥ chinnam rāmeṇa sāyakaiḥ
23. tat śīrṣam chinnamātram ca punaḥ anyat dṛśyate
sma tat api rāmeṇa aśanisaṃkāśaiḥ sāyakaiḥ chinnam
23. As soon as that head was severed, another one was seen again. That one too was cut off by Rama with arrows resembling thunderbolts.
एवमेव शतं छिन्नं शिरसां तुल्यवर्चसाम् ।
न चैव रावणस्यान्तो दृश्यते जीवितक्षये ॥२४॥
24. evameva śataṃ chinnaṃ śirasāṃ tulyavarcasām ,
na caiva rāvaṇasyānto dṛśyate jīvitakṣaye.
24. evam eva śatam chinnam śirasām tulyavarcasām
na ca eva rāvaṇasya antaḥ dṛśyate jīvitakṣaye
24. evam eva śirasām tulyavarcasām śatam chinnam
na ca eva rāvaṇasya antaḥ jīvitakṣaye dṛśyate
24. In this very manner, a hundred heads of equal splendor were severed. Yet, Ravana's end, signifying the exhaustion of his life, was not seen.
ततः सर्वास्त्रविद्वीरः कौसल्यानन्दिवर्धनः ।
मार्गणैर्बहुभिर्युक्तश्चिन्तयामास राघवः ॥२५॥
25. tataḥ sarvāstravidvīraḥ kausalyānandivardhanaḥ ,
mārgaṇairbahubhiryuktaścintayāmāsa rāghavaḥ.
25. tataḥ sarvāstravit vīraḥ kausalyānandivardhanaḥ
mārgṇaiḥ bahubhiḥ yuktaḥ cintayāmāsa rāghavaḥ
25. tataḥ rāghavaḥ sarvāstravit vīraḥ kausalyānandivardhanaḥ
bahubhiḥ mārgṇaiḥ yuktaḥ cintayāmāsa
25. Then, Rama (rāghava), the heroic master of all weapons and the enhancer of Kausalya's joy, began to ponder, even though he was equipped with many arrows.
मारीचो निहतो यैस्तु खरो यैस्तु सुदूषणः ।
क्रञ्चारण्ये विराधस्तु कबन्धो दण्डका वने ॥२६॥
26. mārīco nihato yaistu kharo yaistu sudūṣaṇaḥ ,
krañcāraṇye virādhastu kabandho daṇḍakā vane.
26. mārīcaḥ nihataḥ yaiḥ tu kharaḥ yaiḥ tu sudūṣaṇaḥ
krañcāraṇye virādhaḥ tu kabandhaḥ daṇḍakā vane
26. yaiḥ tu mārīcaḥ nihataḥ yaiḥ tu kharaḥ sudūṣaṇaḥ
tu virādhaḥ krañcāraṇye kabandhaḥ daṇḍakā vane
26. By which [arrows] Maricha was killed, and by which Khara and Sudushana [were slain]; Viradha in the Krauncha forest, and Kabandha in the Dandaka forest, were also vanquished.
त इमे सायकाः सर्वे युद्धे प्रत्ययिका मम ।
किं नु तत् कारणं येन रावणे मन्दतेजसः ॥२७॥
27. ta ime sāyakāḥ sarve yuddhe pratyayikā mama ,
kiṃ nu tat kāraṇaṃ yena rāvaṇe mandatejasaḥ.
27. te ime sāyakāḥ sarve yuddhe pratyayikāḥ mama
kim nu tat kāraṇam yena rāvaṇe mandatejasaḥ
27. All these arrows are usually reliable for me in battle. What could be the reason why they are ineffective against Rāvaṇa?
इति चिन्तापरश्चासीदप्रमत्तश्च संयुगे ।
ववर्ष शरवर्षाणि राघवो रावणोरसि ॥२८॥
28. iti cintāparaścāsīdapramattaśca saṃyuge ,
vavarṣa śaravarṣāṇi rāghavo rāvaṇorasi.
28. iti cintāparaḥ ca āsīt apramattaḥ ca saṃyuge
vavarṣa śaravarṣāṇi rāghavaḥ rāvaṇa urasi
28. Though he was absorbed in thought, he remained vigilant in battle. Rāghava (Rāma) showered torrents of arrows onto Rāvaṇa's chest.
रावणो ऽपि ततः क्रुद्धो रथस्थो राक्षसेश्वरः ।
गदामुसलवर्षेण रामं प्रत्यर्दयद् रणे ॥२९॥
29. rāvaṇo'pi tataḥ kruddho rathastho rākṣaseśvaraḥ ,
gadāmusalavarṣeṇa rāmaṃ pratyardayad raṇe.
29. rāvaṇaḥ api tataḥ kruddhaḥ rathasthaḥ rākṣaseśvaraḥ
gadāmuslavarṣeṇa rāmam pratyardayat raṇe
29. Then, Rāvaṇa, the lord of the Rākṣasas, enraged and positioned in his chariot, retaliated against Rāma in battle with a shower of maces and clubs.
देवदानवयक्षाणां पिशाचोरगरक्षसाम् ।
पश्यतां तन्महद् युद्धं सर्वरात्रमवर्तत ॥३०॥
30. devadānavayakṣāṇāṃ piśācoragarakṣasām ,
paśyatāṃ tanmahad yuddhaṃ sarvarātramavartata.
30. devadānavayakṣāṇām piśācoragarakṣasām paśyatām
tat mahat yuddham sarvarātram avartata
30. While gods, Dānavas, Yakṣas, Piśācas, Uragas, and Rākṣasas watched, that great battle continued throughout the entire night.
नैव रत्रिं न दिवसं न मुहूर्तं न चक्षणम् ।
रामरावणयोर्युद्धं विराममुपगच्छति ॥३१॥
31. naiva ratriṃ na divasaṃ na muhūrtaṃ na cakṣaṇam ,
rāmarāvaṇayoryuddhaṃ virāmamupagacchati.
31. na eva rātrim na divasam na muhūrtam na ca
kṣaṇam rāmarāvaṇayoḥ yuddham virāmam upagacchati
31. rāmarāvaṇayoḥ yuddham na eva rātrim na divasam
na muhūrtam na ca kṣaṇam virāmam upagacchati
31. The battle between Rama and Ravana does not cease, neither by night nor by day, not even for a moment or an instant.
