राम प्रीतो ऽस्मि भद्रं ते परितुष्टो ऽस्मि लक्ष्मण ।
अभिवादयितुं यन्मां प्राप्तौ स्थः सह सीतया ॥१॥
1. rāma prīto'smi bhadraṃ te parituṣṭo'smi lakṣmaṇa ,
abhivādayituṃ yanmāṃ prāptau sthaḥ saha sītayā.

1. O Rāma, I am pleased; may you be well! O Lakṣmaṇa, I am completely satisfied because you both, accompanied by Sītā, have come to pay respects to me.
अध्वश्रमेण वां खेदो बाधते प्रचुरश्रमः ।
व्यक्तमुत्कण्ठते चापि मैथिली जनकात्मजा ॥२॥
2. adhvaśrameṇa vāṃ khedo bādhate pracuraśramaḥ ,
vyaktamutkaṇṭhate cāpi maithilī janakātmajā.
2. adhvaśrameṇa vām khedaḥ bādhate pracuraśramaḥ
vyaktam utkaṇṭhate ca api maithilī janakātmajā
2. adhvaśrameṇa pracuraśramaḥ khedaḥ vām bādhate
ca api vyaktam maithilī janakātmajā utkaṇṭhate
2. The fatigue of the journey, a great weariness, surely afflicts you both. And clearly, Maithilī, Janaka's daughter, also feels yearning.
एषा हि सुकुमारी च दुःखैश्च न विमानिता ।
प्राज्यदोषं वनं प्रप्ता भर्तृस्नेहप्रचोदिता ॥३॥
3. eṣā hi sukumārī ca duḥkhaiśca na vimānitā ,
prājyadoṣaṃ vanaṃ praptā bhartṛsnehapracoditā.
3. eṣā hi sukumārī ca duḥkhaiḥ ca na vimānitā
prājydoṣam vanam praptā bhartṛsnehapracoditā

3. Indeed, she is very delicate and has not been accustomed to hardship. Driven by her husband's affection, she has arrived in this forest, which is full of great dangers.
यथैषा रमते राम इह सीता तथा कुरु ।
दुष्करं कृतवत्येषा वने त्वामनुगच्छती ॥४॥
4. yathaiṣā ramate rāma iha sītā tathā kuru ,
duṣkaraṃ kṛtavatyeṣā vane tvāmanugacchatī.
4. yathā eṣā ramate rāma iha sītā tathā kuru
duṣkaram kṛtavatī eṣā vane tvām anugacchatī
4. rāma yathā eṣā sītā iha ramate tathā kuru
eṣā tvām anugacchatī vane duṣkaram kṛtavatī
4. O Rāma, just as Sītā delights here, so should you act. This woman has performed a difficult deed by following you into the forest.
एषा हि प्रकृतिः स्त्रीणामासृष्टे रघुनन्दन ।
समस्थमनुरज्यन्ते विषमस्थं त्यजन्ति च ॥५॥
5. eṣā hi prakṛtiḥ strīṇāmāsṛṣṭe raghunandana ,
samasthamanurajyante viṣamasthaṃ tyajanti ca.
5. eṣā hi prakṛtiḥ strīṇām āsṛṣṭe raghunandana
samastham anurajyante viṣamastham tyajanti ca
5. raghunandana eṣā hi āsṛṣṭe strīṇām prakṛtiḥ (asti)
(tāḥ) samastham anurajyante ca viṣamastham tyajanti
5. O scion of Raghu, this indeed is the intrinsic nature (prakṛti) of women from the very beginning of creation: they are attracted to those in favorable circumstances and abandon those in adverse circumstances.
शतह्रदानां लोलत्वं शस्त्राणां तीक्ष्णतां तथा ।
गरुडानिलयोः शैघ्र्यमनुगच्छन्ति योषितः ॥६॥
6. śatahradānāṃ lolatvaṃ śastrāṇāṃ tīkṣṇatāṃ tathā ,
garuḍānilayoḥ śaighryamanugacchanti yoṣitaḥ.
6. śatahṛdānām lolatvam śastrāṇām tīkṣṇatām tathā
garuḍānilayoḥ śaighryam anugacchanti yoṣitaḥ
6. yoṣitaḥ śatahṛdānām lolatvam śastrāṇām tīkṣṇatām
tathā garuḍānilayoḥ śaighryam anugacchanti
6. Women emulate the fickleness of lightning flashes, the sharpness of weapons, and the swiftness of Garuḍa and the wind.
इयं तु भवतो भार्या दोषैरेतैर्विवर्जिताः ।
श्लाघ्या च व्यपदेश्या च यथा देवी ह्यरुन्धती ॥७॥
7. iyaṃ tu bhavato bhāryā doṣairetairvivarjitāḥ ,
ślāghyā ca vyapadeśyā ca yathā devī hyarundhatī.
7. iyam tu bhavataḥ bhāryā doṣaiḥ etaiḥ vivarjitāḥ
ślāghyā ca vyapadeśyā ca yathā devī hi arundhatī
7. iyam tu bhavataḥ bhāryā etaiḥ doṣaiḥ vivarjitāḥ
ca ślāghyā ca vyapadeśyā hi yathā devī arundhatī
7. However, this wife of yours is devoid of these faults. She is praiseworthy and exemplary, just like the goddess Arundhatī.
अलंकृतो ऽयं देशश्च यत्र सौमित्रिणा सह ।
वैदेह्या चानया राम वत्स्यसि त्वमरिंदम ॥८॥
8. alaṃkṛto'yaṃ deśaśca yatra saumitriṇā saha ,
vaidehyā cānayā rāma vatsyasi tvamariṃdama.
8. alaṃkṛtaḥ ayam deśaḥ ca yatra saumitriṇā saha
vaidehyā ca anayā rāma vatsyasi tvam arindama
8. rāma arindama ayam deśaḥ alaṃkṛtaḥ yatra tvam
saumitriṇā saha anayā ca vaidehyā vatsyasi
8. O Rama, vanquisher of foes, this land is adorned, where you will dwell with Lakshmana (Saumitri) and with this Vaidehi (Sītā).
एवमुक्तस्तु मुनिना राघवः संयताञ्जलिः ।
उवाच प्रश्रितं वाक्यमृषिं दीप्तमिवानलम् ॥९॥
9. evamuktastu muninā rāghavaḥ saṃyatāñjaliḥ ,
uvāca praśritaṃ vākyamṛṣiṃ dīptamivānalam.
9. evam uktaḥ tu muninā rāghavaḥ saṃyatāñjaliḥ
uvāca praśritam vākyam ṛṣim dīptam iva analam
9. muninā evam uktaḥ tu saṃyatāñjaliḥ rāghavaḥ
dīptam analam iva ṛṣim praśritam vākyam uvāca
9. Thus addressed by the sage, Rama (Rāghava), with folded hands, spoke a humble statement to the sage, who shone like a blazing fire.
धन्यो ऽस्म्यनुगृहीतो ऽस्मि यस्य मे मुनिपुंगवः ।
गुणैः सभ्रातृभार्यस्य वरदः परितुष्यति ॥१०॥
10. dhanyo'smyanugṛhīto'smi yasya me munipuṃgavaḥ ,
guṇaiḥ sabhrātṛbhāryasya varadaḥ parituṣyati.
10. dhanyaḥ asmi anugṛhītaḥ asmi yasya me munipuṅgavaḥ
guṇaiḥ sabhrātṛbhāryasya varadaḥ parituṣyati
10. asmi dhanyaḥ asmi anugṛhītaḥ yasya me munipuṅgavaḥ
varadaḥ sabhrātṛbhāryasya guṇaiḥ parituṣyati
10. I am blessed, and I am favored, for the chief of sages, the bestower of boons, is pleased with the qualities of me, who am accompanied by my brother and wife.
किं तु व्यादिश मे देशं सोदकं बहुकाननम् ।
यत्राश्रमपदं कृत्वा वसेयं निरतः सुखम् ॥११॥
11. kiṃ tu vyādiśa me deśaṃ sodakaṃ bahukānanam ,
yatrāśramapadaṃ kṛtvā vaseyaṃ nirataḥ sukham.
11. kim tu vyādiśa me deśam sodakam bahukānanam
yatra āśramapadam kṛtvā vaseyam nirataḥ sukham
11. kim tu me sodakam bahukānanam deśam vyādiśa
yatra āśramapadam kṛtvā nirataḥ sukham vaseyam
11. However, please indicate to me a region with water and abundant forests, where, having established an hermitage (āśramapada), I may dwell devotedly and happily.
ततो ऽब्रवीन्मुनि श्रेष्ठः श्रुत्वा रामस्य भाषितम् ।
ध्यात्वा मुहूर्तं धर्मात्मा धीरो धीरतरं वचः ॥१२॥
12. tato'bravīnmuni śreṣṭhaḥ śrutvā rāmasya bhāṣitam ,
dhyātvā muhūrtaṃ dharmātmā dhīro dhīrataraṃ vacaḥ.
12. tataḥ abravīt muni śreṣṭhaḥ śrutvā rāmasya bhāṣitam
dhyātvā muhūrtam dharmātmā dhīraḥ dhīrataram vacaḥ
12. tataḥ rāmasya bhāṣitam śrutvā,
dharmātmā dhīraḥ muni śreṣṭhaḥ muhūrtam dhyātvā,
dhīrataram vacaḥ abravīt.
12. Then, having heard Rama's speech, the best of sages, whose soul was dedicated to righteousness (dharma), meditated for a moment and, being steadfast, spoke even more steadfast words.
इतो द्वियोजने तात बहुमूलफलोदकः ।
देशो बहुमृगः श्रीमान्पञ्चवट्यभिविश्रुतः ॥१३॥
13. ito dviyojane tāta bahumūlaphalodakaḥ ,
deśo bahumṛgaḥ śrīmānpañcavaṭyabhiviśrutaḥ.
13. itaḥ dvīyojane tāta bahumūlaphalodakaḥ deśaḥ
bahumṛgaḥ śrīmān pañcavaṭī abhivikhyātaḥ
13. tāta,
itaḥ dvīyojane bahumūlaphalodakaḥ bahumṛgaḥ śrīmān deśaḥ pañcavaṭī abhivikhyātaḥ (asti).
13. My dear son, two yojanas from here lies a prosperous region, rich in many roots, fruits, and water, abundant with numerous animals, and renowned as Pañcavaṭī.
तत्र गत्वाश्रमपदं कृत्वा सौमित्रिणा सह ।
रमस्व त्वं पितुर्वाक्यं यथोक्तमनुपालयन् ॥१४॥
14. tatra gatvāśramapadaṃ kṛtvā saumitriṇā saha ,
ramasva tvaṃ piturvākyaṃ yathoktamanupālayan.
14. tatra gatvā āśramapadam kṛtvā saumitriṇā saha
ramasva tvam pituḥ vākyam yathā uktam anupālayan
14. tvam tatra gatvā,
saumitriṇā saha āśramapadam kṛtvā,
yathā uktam pituḥ vākyam anupālayan ramasva.
14. Having gone there and established an hermitage with Saumitri (Lakshmana), you should reside there, diligently following your father's instructions as given.
विदितो ह्येष वृत्तान्तो मम सर्वस्तवानघ ।
तपसश्च प्रभावेन स्नेहाद्दशरथस्य च ॥१५॥
15. vidito hyeṣa vṛttānto mama sarvastavānagha ,
tapasaśca prabhāvena snehāddaśarathasya ca.
15. viditaḥ hi eṣaḥ vṛttāntaḥ mama sarvaḥ tava anagha
tapasaḥ ca prabhāveṇa snehāt daśarathasya ca
15. anagha,
hi eṣaḥ sarvaḥ tava vṛttāntaḥ mama tapasaḥ prabhāveṇa ca daśarathasya snehāt ca viditaḥ.
15. Indeed, O sinless one, this entire story of yours is known to me, through the power of my asceticism (tapas) and also through the affection of Daśaratha.
हृदयस्थश्च ते छन्दो विज्ञातस्तपसा मया ।
इह वासं प्रतिज्ञाय मया सह तपोवने ॥१६॥
16. hṛdayasthaśca te chando vijñātastapasā mayā ,
iha vāsaṃ pratijñāya mayā saha tapovane.
16. hṛdayasthaḥ ca te chandaḥ vijñātaḥ tapasā
mayā iha vāsam pratijñāya mayā saha tapovane
16. te hṛdayasthaḥ chandaḥ ca mayā tapasā vijñātaḥ
iha tapovane mayā saha vāsam pratijñāya
16. Your intention, which resides in your heart, has been understood by me through my ascetic practice (tapas). Although you have promised to reside here with me in this hermitage...
अतश्च त्वामहं ब्रूमि गच्छ पञ्चवटीमिति ।
स हि रम्यो वनोद्देशो मैथिली तत्र रंस्यते ॥१७॥
17. ataśca tvāmahaṃ brūmi gaccha pañcavaṭīmiti ,
sa hi ramyo vanoddeśo maithilī tatra raṃsyate.
17. ataḥ ca tvām aham brūmi gaccha pañcavaṭīm iti
saḥ hi ramyaḥ vanoddeśaḥ maithilī tatra raṃsyate
17. ataḥ ca aham tvām pañcavaṭīm gaccha iti brūmi
saḥ vanoddeśaḥ hi ramyaḥ maithilī tatra raṃsyate
17. Therefore, I tell you, 'Go to Panchavati.' Indeed, that forest region is delightful, and Maithili will enjoy herself there.
स देशः श्लाघनीयश्च नातिदूरे च राघव ।
गोदावर्याः समीपे च मैथिली तत्र रंस्यते ॥१८॥
18. sa deśaḥ ślāghanīyaśca nātidūre ca rāghava ,
godāvaryāḥ samīpe ca maithilī tatra raṃsyate.
18. saḥ deśaḥ ślāghanīyaḥ ca na atidūre ca rāghava
godāvaryāḥ samīpe ca maithilī tatra raṃsyate
18. rāghava saḥ deśaḥ ślāghanīyaḥ ca na atidūre ca
godāvaryāḥ samīpe ca maithilī tatra raṃsyate
18. That region, O Raghava, is praiseworthy and not very far. It is also near the Godavari, and Maithili will enjoy herself there.
प्राज्यमूलफलैश्चैव नानाद्विज गणैर्युतः ।
विविक्तश्च महाबाहो पुण्यो रम्यस्तथैव च ॥१९॥
19. prājyamūlaphalaiścaiva nānādvija gaṇairyutaḥ ,
viviktaśca mahābāho puṇyo ramyastathaiva ca.
19. prājyamūlaphalaiḥ ca eva nānādvijagaṇaiḥ yutaḥ
viviktaḥ ca mahābāho puṇyaḥ ramyaḥ tathā eva ca
19. mahābāho prājyamūlaphalaiḥ ca eva nānādvijagaṇaiḥ
yutaḥ viviktaḥ ca puṇyaḥ ramyaḥ tathā eva ca
19. It is indeed endowed with abundant roots and fruits and diverse groups of birds. And, O mighty-armed one, it is secluded, sacred, and charming as well.
भवानपि सदारश्च शक्तश्च परिरक्षणे ।
अपि चात्र वसन् रामस्तापसान्पालयिष्यसि ॥२०॥
20. bhavānapi sadāraśca śaktaśca parirakṣaṇe ,
api cātra vasan rāmastāpasānpālayiṣyasi.
20. bhavān api sadāraḥ ca śaktaḥ ca parirakṣaṇe
api ca atra vasan rāmaḥ tāpasān pālayiṣyasi
20. rāmaḥ bhavān api sadāraḥ ca śaktaḥ ca
parirakṣaṇe atra vasan api ca tāpasān pālayiṣyasi
20. You, accompanied by your wife, are capable of providing protection. Furthermore, by dwelling here, Rama, you will protect the ascetics.
एतदालक्ष्यते वीर मधुकानां महद्वनम् ।
उत्तरेणास्य गन्तव्यं न्यग्रोधमभिगच्छता ॥२१॥
21. etadālakṣyate vīra madhukānāṃ mahadvanam ,
uttareṇāsya gantavyaṃ nyagrodhamabhigacchatā.
21. etat ālakṣyate vīra madhukānām mahat vanam
uttareṇa asya gantavyam nyagrodham abhigacchatā
21. vīra etat madhukānām mahat vanam ālakṣyate
nyagrodham abhigacchatā asya uttareṇa gantavyam
21. O hero, this vast forest of Madhuka trees is visible. One should proceed to its north, especially if going towards the banyan tree.
ततः स्थलमुपारुह्य पर्वतस्याविदूरतः ।
ख्यातः पञ्चवटीत्येव नित्यपुष्पितकाननः ॥२२॥
22. tataḥ sthalamupāruhya parvatasyāvidūrataḥ ,
khyātaḥ pañcavaṭītyeva nityapuṣpitakānanaḥ.
22. tataḥ sthalam upāruhja parvatasya avidūrataḥ
khyātaḥ pañcavaṭī iti eva nityapuṣpitakānanaḥ
22. tataḥ parvatasya avidūrataḥ sthalam upāruhja,
pañcavaṭī iti eva khyātaḥ nityapuṣpitakānanaḥ
22. Then, having ascended an elevated spot not far from the mountain, there is a celebrated grove known as Pañcavaṭī, which is always in bloom.
अगस्त्येनैवमुक्तस्तु रामः सौमित्रिणा सह ।
सात्कृत्यामन्त्रयामास तमृषिं सत्यवादिनम् ॥२३॥
23. agastyenaivamuktastu rāmaḥ saumitriṇā saha ,
sātkṛtyāmantrayāmāsa tamṛṣiṃ satyavādinam.
23. agastyena evam uktaḥ tu rāmaḥ saumitriṇā saha
sātkṛtya āmantrayāmāsa tam ṛṣim satyavādinam
23. agastyena evam uktaḥ tu rāmaḥ saumitriṇā saha
satyavādinam tam ṛṣim sātkṛtya āmantrayāmāsa
23. Thus addressed by Agastya, Rama, accompanied by Saumitri, first honored that truthful sage and then bid him farewell.
तौ तु तेनाभ्यनुज्ञातौ कृतपादाभिवन्दनौ ।
तदाश्रमात् पञ्चवटीं जग्मतुः सह सीतया ॥२४॥
24. tau tu tenābhyanujñātau kṛtapādābhivandanau ,
tadāśramāt pañcavaṭīṃ jagmatuḥ saha sītayā.
24. tau tu tena abhyanujñātau kṛtapādābhivandanau
tadāśramāt pañcavaṭīṃ jagmatuḥ saha sītayā
24. tau tu tena abhyanujñātau kṛtapādābhivandanau
sītayā saha tadāśramāt pañcavaṭīṃ jagmatuḥ
24. Having been granted permission by him and having paid their respects at his feet, the two of them went from that hermitage to Pancavati with Sita.
गृहीतचापौ तु नराधिपात्मजौ विषक्ततूणी समरेष्वकातरौ ।
यथोपदिष्टेन पथा महर्षिणा प्रजग्मतुः पञ्चवटीं समाहितौ ॥२५॥
25. gṛhītacāpau tu narādhipātmajau viṣaktatūṇī samareṣvakātarau ,
yathopadiṣṭena pathā maharṣiṇā prajagmatuḥ pañcavaṭīṃ samāhitau.
25. gṛhītacāpau tu narādhipātmajau
viṣaktatūṇī samareṣu akātarau
yathopadiṣṭena pathā maharṣiṇā
prajagmatuḥ pañcavaṭīṃ samāhitau
25. tu gṛhītacāpau viṣaktatūṇī samareṣu
akātarau narādhipātmajau
maharṣiṇā yathopadiṣṭena pathā
samāhitau pañcavaṭīṃ prajagmatuḥ
25. But the two princes (ātmajau), having taken up their bows, with quivers fastened, and fearless in battles, proceeded to Pancavati, self-composed, following the path indicated by the great sage.
