What kind of strength do you possess, you ignoble and sinful person, who came here after abducting me in my husband's absence, unseen by that great-souled (mahātman) one?
न त्वं रामस्य सदृशो दास्ये ऽप्यस्या न युज्यसे ।
यज्ञीयः सत्यवाक् चैव रणश्लाघी च राघवः ॥६३॥

You are not like Rāma; you are not even fit for servitude to me. Rāghava (Rāma) is worthy of (Vedic ritual), truthful of speech, and glorious in battle.

Having thus been addressed with harsh words by Janakī (Sītā), Daśānana (Rāvaṇa) suddenly blazed up with anger, like a fire on a funeral pyre.
विवृत्य नयने क्रूरे मुष्टिमुद्यम्य दक्षिणम् ।
मैथिलीं हन्तुमारब्धः स्त्रीभिर्हाहाकृतं तदा ॥६५॥

Rolling his cruel eyes and raising his right fist, he began to strike Maithilī (Sītā). At that moment, the women cried out 'Hāhā!'.
स्त्रीणां मध्यात् समुत्पत्य तस्य भार्या दुरात्मनः ।

Having sprung up from among the women, his excellent wife, Mandodarī by name, prevented that evil-minded one (Rāvaṇa).
उक्तश्च मधुरां वाणीं तया स मदनार्दितः ।
सीतया तव किं कार्यं महेन्द्रसमविक्रम ।
मया सह रमस्वाद्य मद्विशिष्टा न जानकी ॥६७॥

tayā saḥ madanārditaḥ madhurām vāṇīm uktaḥ ca: "mahendrasamavikrama,
tava sītayā kim kāryam? adya mayā saha ramasva; jānakī madviśiṣṭā na.

67.
She, with sweet words, spoke to him, who was afflicted by love: 'What is your purpose with Sītā, O one whose might is equal to Mahendra? Enjoy yourself with me today. Janakī is not superior to me.'
देवगन्धर्वकन्याभिर्यक्षकन्याभिरेव च ।
सार्धं प्रभो रमस्वेह सीतया किं करिष्यसि ॥६८॥

68.
O lord, enjoy yourself here with the daughters of gods, gandharvas, and yakṣas. What will you accomplish with Sītā?
ततस्ताभिः समेताभिर्नारीभिः स महाबलः ।
उत्थाप्य सहसा नीतो भवनं स्वं निशाचरः ॥६९॥

69. tatastābhiḥ sametābhirnārībhiḥ sa mahābalaḥ ,
utthāpya sahasā nīto bhavanaṃ svaṃ niśācaraḥ.

Then, those assembled women quickly lifted and led him, the mighty night-stalker, to his own palace.
याते तस्मिन्दशग्रीवे राक्षस्यो विकृताननाः ।
सीतां निर्भर्त्सयामासुर्वाक्यैः क्रूरैः सुदारुणैः ॥७०॥

70. yāte tasmindaśagrīve rākṣasyo vikṛtānanāḥ ,

tasmin daśagrīve yāte,

70.
After that Daśagrīva departed, the demonesses with distorted faces rebuked Sītā with cruel and exceedingly dreadful words.
तृणवद्भाषितं तासां गणयामास जानकी ।
तर्जितं च तदा तासां सीतां प्राप्य निरर्थकम् ॥७१॥

Janaki (Sita) regarded their words as insignificant as a blade of grass. Their threats, upon reaching Sita, thus became meaningless.
वृथागर्जितनिश्चेष्टा राक्षस्यः पिशिताशनाः ।
रावणाय शशंसुस्ताः सीताव्यवसितं महत् ॥७२॥

The flesh-eating demonesses, their roaring futile and their efforts ceased, reported Sita's firm resolve to Ravana.

Thereafter, all of them, gathered together, with their hopes shattered and their efforts abandoned, surrounded her (Sita) on all sides and succumbed to sleep.

And when they had all fallen asleep, Sita, devoted to her husband's welfare, distressed and exceedingly sorrowful, lamented piteously and grieved deeply.
तां चाहं तादृशीं दृष्ट्वा सीताया दारुणां दशाम् ।
चिन्तयामास विश्रान्तो न च मे निर्वृतं मनः ॥७५॥

75. tāṃ cāhaṃ tādṛśīṃ dṛṣṭvā sītāyā dāruṇāṃ daśām ,

tām ca aham tādṛśīm dṛṣṭvā sītāyā dāruṇām daśām

And having seen that dire condition of Sītā, I pondered. Though I was rested, my mind was not at peace.
संभाषणार्थे च मया जानक्याश्चिन्तितो विधिः ।
इक्ष्वाकुकुलवंशस्तु ततो मम पुरस्कृतः ॥७६॥

76. saṃbhāṣaṇārthe ca mayā jānakyāścintito vidhiḥ ,
ikṣvākukulavaṃśastu tato mama puraskṛtaḥ.

And for the purpose of conversation with Jānakī, a method was devised by me. Then, the lineage of the Ikṣvākus was presented by me.
श्रुत्वा तु गदितां वाचं राजर्षिगणपूजिताम् ।
प्रत्यभाषत मां देवी बाष्पैः पिहितलोचना ॥७७॥

However, having heard the spoken word, honored by groups of royal sages, the noble lady (devī) replied to me, her eyes veiled by tears.
कस्त्वं केन कथं चेह प्राप्तो वानरपुंगव ।
का च रामेण ते प्रीतिस्तन्मे शंसितुमर्हसि ॥७८॥

78. kastvaṃ kena kathaṃ ceha prāpto vānarapuṃgava ,

Who are you, O best among monkeys (vānarapungava)? By whom and how have you arrived here? And what is your affection (prīti) for Rāma? You ought to tell me that.
तस्यास्तद्वचनं श्रुत्वा अहमप्यब्रुवं वचः ।
देवि रामस्य भर्तुस्ते सहायो भीमविक्रमः ।
सुग्रीवो नाम विक्रान्तो वानरेन्दो महाबलः ॥७९॥

79. tasyāstadvacanaṃ śrutvā ahamapyabruvaṃ vacaḥ ,
devi rāmasya bhartuste sahāyo bhīmavikramaḥ ,
sugrīvo nāma vikrānto vānarendo mahābalaḥ.

devi tasyāḥ tat vacanam śrutvā aham api vacaḥ abruvam.
te bhartuḥ rāmasya sahāyaḥ sugrīvaḥ nāma bhīmavikramaḥ vikrāntaḥ mahābalaḥ vānarendraḥ.

79.
Hearing her words, I also spoke thus: 'O Goddess, your husband Rāma has an assistant of tremendous power, a valiant and exceedingly strong king of monkeys named Sugrīva.'
तस्य मां विद्धि भृत्यं त्वं हनूमन्तमिहागतम् ।
भर्त्राहं प्रहितस्तुभ्यं रामेणाक्लिष्टकर्मणा ॥८०॥

80. tasya māṃ viddhi bhṛtyaṃ tvaṃ hanūmantamihāgatam ,

tasya mām viddhi bhṛtyam tvam hanūmantam iha āgatam

tvam mām hanūmantam iha āgatam tasya bhṛtyam viddhi.
aham akliṣṭakarmaṇā rāmeṇa bhartrā tubhyam prahitaḥ.

Know me, Hanūmat, who has arrived here, to be his (Sugrīva's) servant. I have been sent to you by your husband Rāma, whose actions are untiring.
इदं च पुरुषव्याघ्रः श्रीमान्दाशरथिः स्वयम् ।
अङ्गुलीयमभिज्ञानमदात्तुभ्यं यशस्विनि ॥८१॥

And this ring, as a token of recognition, was given to you by the illustrious son of Daśaratha, that tiger among men, himself, O glorious one!

Thus addressed, the supremely distressed lady with excellent hips (Sītā) gave me a most excellent jewel and indeed instructed me verbally.

Then, having resolved the matter in her mind, she spoke again: 'O Hanumat, you must convey my situation to Rāghava (Rāma).'

Please act so that, immediately upon hearing this, those two heroes, Rāma and Lakṣmaṇa, accompanied by Sugrīva, may quickly arrive.

If this situation turns out differently, my remaining life is only two months. Rāma (Kākuṣṭha) will not see me, and I, helpless, will surely die.

Having heard that pitiable statement, anger surged up in me. And then, I considered the remaining part of my mission.

Then my body grew, becoming like a mountain at that time. Desiring battle, I began to destroy that very forest.

That broken forest grove, with its bewildered and terrified deer and birds, was observed by the awakened demonesses with distorted faces.

And having seen me in that forest, they quickly gathered from various directions and reported to Rāvaṇa.

O King, this impenetrable forest of yours has been destroyed by an evil-minded monkey, who indeed did not know your strength, O mighty-armed one.

Having heard that, the lord of the rākṣasas dispatched his very formidable rākṣasa servants named Kiṅkaras, who always followed Rāvaṇa's will.

Eighty thousand of them, who held spears and maces in their hands, were slain by me in that forest region with an iron club.

Having killed hundreds of the *rākṣasas* stationed there, I, in my rage, indeed destroyed that ornament of Laṅkā with a pillar.

I will crush that powerful *rākṣasa*, skilled in battle, along with his followers, with an extremely dreadful iron mace.

Hearing that (news of Jāmbūmalī's death), Rāvaṇa, the lord of rākṣasas, then dispatched his exceedingly powerful minister's sons, who were well-equipped with infantry forces. (Hanumān, speaking of his own actions, declares:) "I shall send all of them to the abode of Yama (the god of death) with just my iron bar."

Hearing that the minister's sons, who were quick in valor, had been slain in battle, Rāvaṇa then dispatched five brave chiefs of his army. (Hanumān recounts:) "I, for my part, utterly destroyed all of them along with their forces."

Then, once again, Daśagrīva (Rāvaṇa) dispatched his exceedingly powerful son, Akṣa, accompanied by many rākṣasas, into battle.

But that son of Mandodarī, the young prince skilled in battle, when he suddenly sprang into the sky, I seized him by his feet. Whirling him, who was bearing a shield, a hundred times, I then crushed him.

Having learned that he (Akṣa) had been defeated and broken, the ten-faced Rāvaṇa, exceedingly enraged, then commanded his powerful, battle-intoxicated second son, named Indrajit.

Having rendered his entire army powerless, and having deprived even that chief of rākṣasas (rākṣasapuṅgava) of his might in battle, I attained great joy.

Indeed, this mighty-armed and very powerful (Indrajit) was sent by Rāvaṇa with great confidence, accompanied by arrogant warriors.

But he (Indrajit) bound me with the Brahmā-weapon (brāhmāstra) with great speed. Then, the rākṣasas there bound me with ropes.

And having seized me, they brought me before Rāvaṇa. I was then seen and addressed by that evil-minded Rāvaṇa.

And I was questioned about my arrival in Laṅkā and the slaying of the rākṣasas. All of that was then explained by me there as being 'for Sītā's sake'.

O powerful one, I have arrived at your dwelling, longing to see her (Sītā). I am Hanumān, the monkey, the true son of Maruta (Vāyu).

And know me, the monkey, to be Rāma's messenger and Sugrīva's minister. I have come here to your presence as Rāma's envoy.

धर्मार्थकामसहितं हितं पथ्यमिवाशनम् ॥११५॥

Listen also to the instruction that I declare to you. O lord of rākṣasas, the lord of monkeys, Sugrīva (harīśa), spoke a well-considered statement to you, one that is beneficial and wholesome, like food, and pertains to constitutional law (dharma), prosperity (artha), and enjoyment (kāma).
वसतो ऋष्यमूके मे पर्वते विपुलद्रुमे ।

While I was dwelling on the Rishyamuka mountain, which is richly wooded, Rama, valorous in battle, came to me seeking friendship.

O king, he told me that his wife was carried away by a rākṣasa. Therefore, you should make a pact with me to provide assistance in that matter.

The powerful Rama, accompanied by Lakṣmaṇa, forged a friendship with Sugrīva, whose kingdom had been seized by Vāli, with Agni as witness.

Having killed Vāli with a single arrow in battle, he made (Sugrīva) the great king and lord of the monkeys (vānarāṇām).

Thus, I reported to him, "The king of monkeys sent this message to you." Then, enraged, he glared at me as if burning me with his eye.

By him, that demon of fierce deeds, I was commanded to be killed.

Then, his great-minded brother by the name of Vibhishana, pleaded with that king of demons on my behalf.

O demon, the killing of an envoy is certainly not prescribed in the treatises on statecraft. Furthermore, an envoy who speaks beneficially should convey the truth accurately.

O you of incomparable might, even for a very great offense, the disfigurement of an envoy is sanctioned. However, according to the sacred texts (dharmaśāstra), killing is not prescribed here.

When Vibhīṣaṇa had spoken thus, Rāvaṇa then commanded those demons, saying, "Let this tail be burnt today!"

Thereupon, after hearing his words, my tail was completely wrapped all around with strips of hemp and also with cotton cloths.

Then, those fierce-valored demons, fully prepared, set my tail ablaze, striking it with sticks and fists.
बद्धस्य बहुभिः पाशैर्यन्त्रितस्य च राक्षसैः ।
न मे पीडा भवेत् का चिद्दिदृक्षोर्नगरीं दिवा ॥१३१॥

Even when bound by many fetters and held captive by (rākṣasas), I felt no pain (pīḍā) whatsoever, as I was eager to see the city by day.

Then those mighty (rākṣasas), having reached the city gate, proclaimed me, bound and engulfed in fire, along the main street.

विमोचयित्वा तं बन्धं प्रकृतिष्ठः स्थितः पुनः ॥१३३॥

Then I, having again contracted my immense form and having freed myself from that bondage, stood once more in my natural state.
आयसं परिघं गृह्य तानि रक्षांस्यसूदयम् ।

Taking an iron bar, I then killed those (rākṣasas). After that, I swiftly leaped over that city gate.

With my blazing tail, I, undisturbed, will burn this city along with its battlements and gate-towers, just as the fire at the end of a cosmic age consumes all beings.

After burning Laṅkā, a doubt again assailed me: 'Surely Sītā must have been burnt by me while I was burning Laṅkā; there is no doubt about it.'

Then I heard the auspicious words of the Caraṇas (celestial bards), who were proclaiming astonishing news, (saying) 'Jānakī has not been burnt!'

Then, having heard that astonishing speech, my understanding dawned. And Vaidehī (Sītā) was seen again, and I was subsequently sent forth by her.
राघवस्य प्रभावेन भवतां चैव तेजसा ।
सुग्रीवस्य च कार्यार्थं मया सर्वमनुष्ठितम् ॥१३९॥

By Rāghava's power and indeed by your prowess, all has been accomplished by me for the sake of Sugrīva's objective.
