तथा तत्रासतस्तस्य भरतस्योपयायिनः ।
सैन्य रेणुश्च शब्दश्च प्रादुरास्तां नभः स्पृशौ ॥१॥

sainya reṇuśca śabdaśca prādurāstāṃ nabhaḥ spṛśau.

1. Thus, while Rama was dwelling there, as Bharata was approaching, both the dust from his army and the sounds (of its movement) appeared, touching the sky.
एतस्मिन्नन्तरे त्रस्ताः शब्देन महता ततः ।
अर्दिता यूथपा मत्ताः सयूथा दुद्रुवुर्दिशः ॥२॥
2. etasminnantare trastāḥ śabdena mahatā tataḥ ,
arditā yūthapā mattāḥ sayūthā dudruvurdiśaḥ.

2. Meanwhile, startled by that great sound, the distressed and agitated herd-leaders, accompanied by their herds, fled in all directions.
स तं सैन्यसमुद्भूतं शब्दं शुश्रव राघवः ।
तांश्च विप्रद्रुतान् सर्वान्यूथपानन्ववैक्षत ॥३॥
3. sa taṃ sainyasamudbhūtaṃ śabdaṃ śuśrava rāghavaḥ ,
tāṃśca vipradrutān sarvānyūthapānanvavaikṣata.

3. Rāghava (Rāma) heard that sound originating from the army, and he also observed all those group leaders fleeing.
तांश्च विद्रवतो दृष्ट्वा तं च श्रुत्वा स निःस्वनम् ।
उवाच रामः सौमित्रिं लक्ष्मणं दीप्ततेजसं ॥४॥
4. tāṃśca vidravato dṛṣṭvā taṃ ca śrutvā sa niḥsvanam ,
uvāca rāmaḥ saumitriṃ lakṣmaṇaṃ dīptatejasaṃ.
4. tān ca vidravataḥ dṛṣṭvā tam ca śrutvā saḥ niḥsvanam

4. And having seen them fleeing and having heard that roar, Rāma spoke to Saumitri, Lakṣmaṇa, who possessed blazing splendor.
हन्त लक्ष्मण पश्येह सुमित्रा सुप्रजास्त्वया ।
भीमस्तनितगम्भीरस्तुमुलः श्रूयते स्वनः ॥५॥
5. hanta lakṣmaṇa paśyeha sumitrā suprajāstvayā ,
bhīmastanitagambhīrastumulaḥ śrūyate svanaḥ.
5. hanta lakṣmaṇa paśya iha sumitrā suprajāḥ tvayā
bhīmastanitagambhīraḥ tumulaḥ śrūyate svanaḥ
5. hanta lakṣmaṇa iha paśya sumitrā tvayā suprajāḥ

5. “Oh, Lakṣmaṇa, look here! Sumitrā is truly blessed with good offspring because of you. A tumultuous sound, deep like terrible thunder, is being heard.”
राजा वा राजमात्रो वा मृगयामटते वने ।
अन्यद्वा श्वापदं किं चित् सौमित्रे ज्ञातुमर्हसि ।
सर्वमेतद् यथातत्त्वमचिराज्ज्ञातुमर्हसि ॥६॥
6. rājā vā rājamātro vā mṛgayāmaṭate vane ,
anyadvā śvāpadaṃ kiṃ cit saumitre jñātumarhasi ,
sarvametad yathātattvamacirājjñātumarhasi.

vane anyat vā śvāpadam kim cit
saumitre jñātum arhasi sarvam etat
yathātattvam acirāt jñātum arhasi

6. “Is it a king or a royal attendant roaming in the forest for a hunt? Or is it some other beast of prey, O Saumitri? You must ascertain all of this exactly as it is, without delay.”
स लक्ष्मणः संत्वरितः सालमारुह्य पुष्पितम् ।
प्रेक्षमाणो दिशः सर्वाः पूर्वां दिशमवैक्षत ॥७॥
7. sa lakṣmaṇaḥ saṃtvaritaḥ sālamāruhya puṣpitam ,
prekṣamāṇo diśaḥ sarvāḥ pūrvāṃ diśamavaikṣata.

7. Lakṣmaṇa, greatly hastened, climbed a flowering śāla tree. Surveying all directions, he then looked specifically towards the eastern quarter.
उदङ्मुखः प्रेक्षमाणो ददर्श महतीं चमूम् ।
रथाश्वगजसंबाधां यत्तैर्युक्तां पदातिभिः ॥८॥
8. udaṅmukhaḥ prekṣamāṇo dadarśa mahatīṃ camūm ,
rathāśvagajasaṃbādhāṃ yattairyuktāṃ padātibhiḥ.
8. udaṅmukhaḥ prekṣamāṇaḥ dadarśa mahatīm camūm
rathāśvagajasaṃbādhām yattaiḥ yuktām padātibhiḥ
8. udaṅmukhaḥ prekṣamāṇaḥ (saḥ) rathāśvagajasaṃbādhām

8. Looking towards the north, he saw a vast army, dense with chariots, horses, and elephants, and accompanied by well-prepared infantry.
तामश्वगजसंपूर्णां रथध्वजविभूषिताम् ।
शशंस सेनां रामाय वचनं चेदमब्रवीत् ॥९॥
9. tāmaśvagajasaṃpūrṇāṃ rathadhvajavibhūṣitām ,
śaśaṃsa senāṃ rāmāya vacanaṃ cedamabravīt.
9. tām aśvagajasaṃpūrṇām rathadhvajavibhūṣitām
śaśaṃsa senām rāmāya vacanam ca idam abravīt
9. (saḥ) rāmāya aśvagajasaṃpūrṇām rathadhvajavibhūṣitām tām senām śaśaṃsa,
ca idam vacanam abravīt
9. He described that army to Rāma, an army teeming with horses and elephants, and decorated with chariot banners, and then spoke these words:
अग्निं संशमयत्वार्यः सीता च भजतां गुहाम् ।
सज्यं कुरुष्व चापं च शरांश्च कवचं तथा ॥१०॥
10. agniṃ saṃśamayatvāryaḥ sītā ca bhajatāṃ guhām ,
sajyaṃ kuruṣva cāpaṃ ca śarāṃśca kavacaṃ tathā.
10. agnim saṃśamayatu āryaḥ sītā ca bhajatām guhām
sajyam kuruṣva cāpam ca śarān ca kavacam tathā
10. āryaḥ agnim saṃśamayatu,
ca sītā guhām bhajatām.
cāpam sajyam kuruṣva,
ca śarān,
tathā kavacam (kuruṣva)
10. "O noble one, extinguish the fire, and let Sītā take refuge in the cave. String your bow, and prepare the arrows and your armor."
तं रामः पुरुषव्याघ्रो लक्ष्मणं प्रत्युवाच ह ।
अङ्गावेक्षस्व सौमित्रे कस्यैतां मन्यसे चमूम् ॥११॥
11. taṃ rāmaḥ puruṣavyāghro lakṣmaṇaṃ pratyuvāca ha ,
aṅgāvekṣasva saumitre kasyaitāṃ manyase camūm.
11. tam rāmaḥ puruṣavyāghraḥ lakṣmaṇam pratyuvāca ha
aṅga avekṣasva saumitre kasya etām manyase camūm
11. puruṣavyāghraḥ rāmaḥ tam lakṣmaṇam ha pratyuvāca
saumitre aṅga etām camūm kasya manyase avekṣasva
11. Rama, the tiger among men (puruṣavyāghra), replied to Lakshmana: "O dear one (aṅga), son of Sumitrā (Saumitre), observe this closely. Whose army do you consider this to be?"
एवमुक्क्तस्तु रामेण लक्ष्माणो वाक्यमब्रवीत् ।
दिधक्षन्निव तां सेनां रुषितः पावको यथा ॥१२॥
12. evamukktastu rāmeṇa lakṣmāṇo vākyamabravīt ,
didhakṣanniva tāṃ senāṃ ruṣitaḥ pāvako yathā.
12. evam uktaḥ tu rāmeṇa lakṣmaṇaḥ vākyam abravīt
didhakṣan iva tām senām ruṣitaḥ pāvakaḥ yathā
12. tu rāmeṇa evam uktaḥ lakṣmaṇaḥ vākyam abravīt
ruṣitaḥ pāvakaḥ yathā tām senām didhakṣan iva
12. However, thus addressed by Rama, Lakshmana spoke, appearing like an enraged fire (pāvaka), as if desiring to burn that army.
संपन्नं राज्यमिच्छंस्तु व्यक्तं प्राप्याभिषेचनम् ।
आवां हन्तुं समभ्येति कैकेय्या भरतः सुतः ॥१३॥
13. saṃpannaṃ rājyamicchaṃstu vyaktaṃ prāpyābhiṣecanam ,
āvāṃ hantuṃ samabhyeti kaikeyyā bharataḥ sutaḥ.
13. sampannam rājyam icchan tu vyaktam prāpya abhiṣecanam
āvām hantum samabhyeti kaikeyyāḥ bharataḥ sutaḥ
13. kaikeyyāḥ sutaḥ bharataḥ sampannam rājyam icchan
vyaktam abhiṣecanam prāpya tu āvām hantum samabhyeti
13. Bharata, the son of Kaikeyī, surely approaches to kill us both, desiring the prosperous kingdom and having clearly obtained the coronation.
एष वै सुमहाञ् श्रीमान् विटपी संप्रकाशते ।
विराजत्युद्गतस्कन्धः कोविदार ध्वजो रथे ॥१४॥
14. eṣa vai sumahāñ śrīmān viṭapī saṃprakāśate ,
virājatyudgataskandhaḥ kovidāra dhvajo rathe.
14. eṣaḥ vai sumahān śrīmān viṭapī samprakāśate
virājati udgataskandhaḥ kovidāra dhvajaḥ rathe
14. eṣaḥ vai sumahān śrīmān viṭapī samprakāśate
udgataskandhaḥ kovidāra dhvajaḥ rathe virājati
14. Indeed, this very grand and glorious tree (viṭapī) appears prominently. A Kovidāra banner (kovidāra-dhvaja), with its uplifted staff, shines on the chariot.
भजन्त्येते यथाकाममश्वानारुह्य शीघ्रगान् ।
एते भ्राजन्ति संहृष्टा गजानारुह्य सादिनः ॥१५॥
15. bhajantyete yathākāmamaśvānāruhya śīghragān ,
ete bhrājanti saṃhṛṣṭā gajānāruhya sādinaḥ.
15. bhajanti ete yathā kāmam aśvān āruhya śīghragān
| ete bhrājanti saṃhṛṣṭāḥ gajān āruhya sādinaḥ
15. ete yathā kāmam śīghragān aśvān āruhya bhajanti
ete saṃhṛṣṭāḥ sādinaḥ gajān āruhya bhrājanti
15. They mount swift-going horses as they desire. These delighted riders shine brightly, having mounted elephants.
गृहीतधनुषौ चावां गिरिं वीर श्रयावहे ।
अथ वेहैव तिष्ठावः संनद्धाव् उद्यतायुधौ ।
अपि नौ वशमागच्छेत् कोविदारध्वजो रणे ॥१६॥
16. gṛhītadhanuṣau cāvāṃ giriṃ vīra śrayāvahe ,
atha vehaiva tiṣṭhāvaḥ saṃnaddhāv udyatāyudhau ,
api nau vaśamāgacchet kovidāradhvajo raṇe.
16. gṛhītadhanuṣau ca āvām girim vīra
śrayāvahe | atha vā iha eva tiṣṭhāvaḥ
saṃnaddhau udyatāyudhau | api nau
vaśam āgacchet kovidāradhvajaḥ raṇe
16. vīra gṛhītadhanuṣau āvām ca girim
śrayāvahe atha vā iha eva saṃnaddhau
udyatāyudhau (āvām) tiṣṭhāvaḥ api
kovidāradhvajaḥ raṇe nau vaśam āgacchet
16. O hero, let us two, with our bows grasped, take refuge in the mountain. Or else, let us remain right here, ready for battle with weapons raised. May he, whose banner bears the Kovidara tree (Bharata), come under our sway in battle.
अपि द्रक्ष्यामि भरतं यत्कृते व्यसनं महत् ।
त्वया राघव संप्राप्तं सीतया च मया तथा ॥१७॥
17. api drakṣyāmi bharataṃ yatkṛte vyasanaṃ mahat ,
tvayā rāghava saṃprāptaṃ sītayā ca mayā tathā.
17. api drakṣyāmi bharatam yat kṛte vyasanam mahat
| tvayā rāghava saṃprāptam sītayā ca mayā tathā
17. rāghava api bharatam drakṣyāmi? yat kṛte mahat
vyasanam tvayā sītayā ca tathā mayā ca saṃprāptam
17. O Rāghava, shall I ever see Bharata again, for whose sake this great misfortune has been endured by you, by Sītā, and likewise by me?
यन्निमित्तं भवान् राज्याच्च्युतो राघव शाश्वतीम् ।
संप्राप्तो ऽयमरिर्वीर भरतो वध्य एव मे ॥१८॥
18. yannimittaṃ bhavān rājyāccyuto rāghava śāśvatīm ,
saṃprāpto'yamarirvīra bharato vadhya eva me.
18. yat nimittam bhavān rājyāt cyutaḥ rāghava śāśvatīm
| saṃprāptaḥ ayam ariḥ vīra bharataḥ vadhyaḥ eva me
18. rāghava vīra yat nimittam bhavān rājyāt śāśvatīm cyutaḥ,
ayam ariḥ bharataḥ saṃprāptaḥ (asti); (saḥ) me vadhyaḥ eva
18. O Rāghava, O hero, this Bharata has arrived, for whose sake you were eternally dislodged from your kingdom; he is indeed worthy of being slain by me.
भरतस्य वधे दोषं नाहं पश्यामि राघव ।
पूर्वापकारिणां त्यागे न ह्यधर्मो विधीयते ।
एतस्मिन्निहते कृत्स्नामनुशाधि वसुंधराम् ॥१९॥
19. bharatasya vadhe doṣaṃ nāhaṃ paśyāmi rāghava ,
pūrvāpakāriṇāṃ tyāge na hyadharmo vidhīyate ,
etasminnihate kṛtsnāmanuśādhi vasuṃdharām.
19. bharatasya vadhe doṣam na aham
paśyāmi rāghava pūrvāpakāriṇām tyāge
na hi adharmaḥ vidhīyate etasmin
nihate kṛtsnām anuśādhi vasundharām
19. rāghava bharatasya vadhe doṣam aham
na paśyāmi pūrvāpakāriṇām tyāge
hi adharmaḥ na vidhīyate etasmin
nihate kṛtsnām vasundharām anuśādhi
19. O Rāghava, I see no fault in killing Bharata. Indeed, abandoning those who have previously caused harm is not considered unrighteousness (adharma). When he is killed, you should rule the entire earth.
अद्य पुत्रं हतं संख्ये कैकेयी राज्यकामुका ।
मया पश्येत् सुदुःखार्ता हस्तिभग्नमिव द्रुमम् ॥२०॥
20. adya putraṃ hataṃ saṃkhye kaikeyī rājyakāmukā ,
mayā paśyet suduḥkhārtā hastibhagnamiva drumam.
20. adya putram hatam saṃkhye kaikeyī rājyakāmukā
mayā paśyet sudūḥkhārtā hastibhagnam iva drumam
20. adya rājyakāmukā kaikeyī mayā saṃkhye hatam
putram sudūḥkhārtā hastibhagnam drumam iva paśyet
20. Today, Kaikeyī, who desired the kingdom, will see her son killed in battle. She will be greatly afflicted by sorrow, as if seeing a tree broken by an elephant.
कैकेयीं च वधिष्यामि सानुबन्धां सबान्धवाम् ।
कलुषेणाद्य महता मेदिनी परिमुच्यताम् ॥२१॥
21. kaikeyīṃ ca vadhiṣyāmi sānubandhāṃ sabāndhavām ,
kaluṣeṇādya mahatā medinī parimucyatām.
21. kaikeyīm ca vadhiṣyāmi sānubandhām sabāndhavām
kaluṣeṇa adya mahatā medinī parimucyatām
21. ca kaikeyīm sānubandhām sabāndhavām vadhiṣyāmi
adya mahatā kaluṣeṇa medinī parimucyatām
21. I will also kill Kaikeyī, along with her followers and relatives. Let the earth be freed today from this great stain of corruption.
अद्येमं संयतं क्रोधमसत्कारं च मानद ।
मोक्ष्यामि शत्रुसैन्येषु कक्षेष्विव हुताशनम् ॥२२॥
22. adyemaṃ saṃyataṃ krodhamasatkāraṃ ca mānada ,
mokṣyāmi śatrusainyeṣu kakṣeṣviva hutāśanam.
22. adya imam saṃyatam krodham asatkāram ca mānada
mokṣyāmi śatrusainyeṣu kakṣeṣu iva hutāśanam
22. mānada adya imam saṃyatam krodham ca asatkāram
śatrusainyeṣu kakṣeṣu iva hutāśanam mokṣyāmi
22. O giver of honor, today I will unleash this restrained anger and the accumulated insult. I will release it upon the enemy armies, just as fire consumes dry grass.
अद्यैतच्चित्रकूटस्य काननं निशितैः शरैः ।
भिन्दञ् शत्रुशरीराणि करिष्ये शोणितोक्षितम् ॥२३॥
23. adyaitaccitrakūṭasya kānanaṃ niśitaiḥ śaraiḥ ,
bhindañ śatruśarīrāṇi kariṣye śoṇitokṣitam.
23. adya etat citrakūṭasya kānanam niśitaiḥ śaraiḥ
bhindan śatruśarīrāṇi kariṣye śoṇitokṣitam
23. adya niśitaiḥ śaraiḥ śatruśarīrāṇi bhindan
etat citrakūṭasya kānanam śoṇitokṣitam kariṣye
23. Today, I will make this forest of Citrakūṭa drenched in blood by piercing the bodies of enemies with sharp arrows.
शरैर्निर्भिन्नहृदयान् कुञ्जरांस्तुरगांस्तथा ।
श्वापदाः परिकर्षन्तु नराश्च निहतान्मया ॥२४॥
24. śarairnirbhinnahṛdayān kuñjarāṃsturagāṃstathā ,
śvāpadāḥ parikarṣantu narāśca nihatānmayā.
24. śaraiḥ nirbhinnahṛdayān kuñjarān turagān tathā
śvāpadāḥ parikarṣantu narāḥ ca nihatān mayā
24. śvāpadāḥ ca mayā śaraiḥ nirbhinnahṛdayān kuñjarān
turagān tathā nihatān narāḥ parikarṣantu
24. May predatory animals drag away the elephants and horses whose hearts have been pierced by arrows, as well as the men slain by me.
शराणां धनुषश्चाहमनृणो ऽस्मि महावने ।
ससैन्यं भरतं हत्वा भविष्यामि न संशयः ॥२५॥
25. śarāṇāṃ dhanuṣaścāhamanṛṇo'smi mahāvane ,
sasainyaṃ bharataṃ hatvā bhaviṣyāmi na saṃśayaḥ.
25. śarāṇām dhanuṣaḥ ca aham anṛṇaḥ asmi mahāvane
sasainyam bharatam hatvā bhaviṣyāmi na saṃśayaḥ
25. aham mahāvane sasainyam bharatam hatvā śarāṇām
dhanuṣaḥ ca anṛṇaḥ asmi na saṃśayaḥ bhaviṣyāmi
25. Having killed Bharata along with his army, I will become free from my debt to the arrows and the bow in this great forest; there is no doubt.
