सा त्वेवमुक्ता वैदेही अनसूयानसूयया ।
प्रतिपूज्य वचो मन्दं प्रवक्तुमुपचक्रमे ॥१॥
1. sā tvevamuktā vaidehī anasūyānasūyayā ,
pratipūjya vaco mandaṃ pravaktumupacakrame.

1. When Vaidehi (Sita) was thus addressed by Anasuya, the un-envious one, she honored those words and slowly began to speak.
नैतदाश्चर्यमार्याया यन्मां त्वमनुभाषसे ।
विदितं तु ममाप्येतद् यथा नार्याः पतिर्गुरुः ॥२॥
2. naitadāścaryamāryāyā yanmāṃ tvamanubhāṣase ,
viditaṃ tu mamāpyetad yathā nāryāḥ patirguruḥ.
2. na etat āścaryam āryāyāḥ yat mām tvam anubhāṣase
viditam tu mama api etat yathā nāryāḥ patiḥ guruḥ
2. āryāyāḥ etat āścaryam na yat tvam mām anubhāṣase.
etat mama api tu viditam yathā nāryāḥ patiḥ guruḥ
2. It is no wonder from a noble lady such as yourself that you speak to me in this way. Indeed, it is also known to me that for a woman, her husband is her spiritual guide (guru).
यद्यप्येष भवेद्भर्ता ममार्ये वृत्तवर्जितः ।
अद्वैधमुपवर्तव्यस्तथाप्येष मया भवेत् ॥३॥
3. yadyapyeṣa bhavedbhartā mamārye vṛttavarjitaḥ ,
advaidhamupavartavyastathāpyeṣa mayā bhavet.
3. yadi api eṣaḥ bhavet bhartā mama ārye vṛttavarjitaḥ
advaidham upavartavyaḥ tathā api eṣaḥ mayā bhavet
3. ārye,
yadi api eṣaḥ mama bhartā vṛttavarjitaḥ bhavet,
tathā api eṣaḥ mayā advaidham upavartavyaḥ bhavet
3. O noble lady, even if this husband of mine were to be devoid of good conduct, he should still be served by me with unwavering devotion.
किं पुनर्यो गुणश्लाघ्यः सानुक्रोशो जितेन्द्रियः ।
स्थिरानुरागो धर्मात्मा मातृवर्ती पितृ प्रियः ॥४॥
4. kiṃ punaryo guṇaślāghyaḥ sānukrośo jitendriyaḥ ,
sthirānurāgo dharmātmā mātṛvartī pitṛ priyaḥ.
4. kim punaḥ yaḥ guṇaślāghyaḥ sānukrośaḥ jitendriyaḥ

4. What more, then, of him who is praised for his virtues, compassionate, self-controlled, steadfast in affection, a righteous soul (dharma), devoted to his mother, and beloved by his father?
यां वृत्तिं वर्तते रामः कौसल्यायां महाबलः ।
तामेव नृपनारीणामन्यासामपि वर्तते ॥५॥
5. yāṃ vṛttiṃ vartate rāmaḥ kausalyāyāṃ mahābalaḥ ,
tāmeva nṛpanārīṇāmanyāsāmapi vartate.
5. yām vṛttim vartate rāmaḥ kausalyāyām mahābalaḥ
tām eva nṛpanārīṇām anyāsām api vartate
5. mahābalaḥ rāmaḥ yām vṛttim kausalyāyām vartate
tām eva anyāsām nṛpanārīṇām api vartate
5. The conduct that the mighty Rama demonstrates towards Kaushalya, exactly that same conduct he also shows towards other royal women.
सकृद्दृष्टास्वपि स्त्रीषु नृपेण नृपवत्सलः ।
मातृवद्वर्तते वीरो मानमुत्सृज्य धर्मवित् ॥६॥
6. sakṛddṛṣṭāsvapi strīṣu nṛpeṇa nṛpavatsalaḥ ,
mātṛvadvartate vīro mānamutsṛjya dharmavit.
6. sakṛt dṛṣṭāsu api strīṣu nṛpeṇa nṛpavatsalaḥ
mātṛvat vartate vīraḥ mānam utsṛjya dharmavit
6. nṛpeṇa nṛpavatsalaḥ dharmavit vīraḥ sakṛt
dṛṣṭāsu strīṣu api mānam utsṛjya mātṛvat vartate
6. Even towards women seen only once, the hero, who is dear to the king and a knower of natural law (dharma), behaves like a mother, abandoning pride.
आगच्छन्त्याश्च विजनं वनमेवं भयावहम् ।
समाहितं हि मे श्वश्र्वा हृदये यत् स्थितं मम ॥७॥
7. āgacchantyāśca vijanaṃ vanamevaṃ bhayāvaham ,
samāhitaṃ hi me śvaśrvā hṛdaye yat sthitaṃ mama.
7. āgacchantyāḥ ca vijanam vanam evam bhayāvaham
samāhitam hi me śvaśrvā hṛdaye yat sthitam mama
7. evam bhayāvaham vijanam vanam āgacchantyāḥ ca
me śvaśrvā hṛdaye yat samāhitam mama sthitam hi
7. As I come to this desolate and fearsome forest, indeed, that which was placed in my heart by my mother-in-law remains mine.
प्राणिप्रदानकाले च यत् पुरा त्वग्निसंनिधौ ।
अनुशिष्टा जनन्यास्मि वाक्यं तदपि मे धृतम् ॥८॥
8. prāṇipradānakāle ca yat purā tvagnisaṃnidhau ,
anuśiṣṭā jananyāsmi vākyaṃ tadapi me dhṛtam.
8. prāṇipradānakāle ca yat purā tu agnisannidhau
anuśiṣṭā jananyā asmi vākyam tat api me dhṛtam
8. ca yat purā jananyā agnisannidhau prāṇipradānakāle
anuśiṣṭā asmi tat vākyam api me dhṛtam
8. And that instruction (vākyam), which I formerly received from my mother in the presence of the sacred fire at the time of my marriage (prāṇipradānakāle) - that advice too has been held by me.
नवीकृतं तु तत् सर्वं वाक्यैस्ते धर्मचारिणि ।
पतिशुश्रूषणान्नार्यास्तपो नान्यद्विधीयते ॥९॥
9. navīkṛtaṃ tu tat sarvaṃ vākyaiste dharmacāriṇi ,
patiśuśrūṣaṇānnāryāstapo nānyadvidhīyate.
9. navīkṛtam tu tat sarvam vākyaiḥ te dharmacāriṇi
patiśuśrūṣaṇāt nāryāḥ tapaḥ na anyat vidhīyate
9. tu dharmacāriṇi te vākyaiḥ tat sarvam navīkṛtam
nāryāḥ patiśuśrūṣaṇāt anyat tapaḥ na vidhīyate
9. But all that (advice) has been renewed by your words, O righteous one (dharmacāriṇī). For a woman, no other austerity (tapas) is prescribed than the service of her husband.
सावित्री पतिशुश्रूषां कृत्वा स्वर्गे महीयते ।
तथा वृत्तिश्च याता त्वं पतिशुश्रूषया दिवम् ॥१०॥
10. sāvitrī patiśuśrūṣāṃ kṛtvā svarge mahīyate ,
tathā vṛttiśca yātā tvaṃ patiśuśrūṣayā divam.
10. sāvitrī patiśuśrūṣām kṛtvā svarge mahīyate
tathā vṛttiḥ ca yātā tvam patiśuśrūṣayā divam
10. sāvitrī patiśuśrūṣām kṛtvā svarge mahīyate
tathā ca tvam vṛttiḥ patiśuśrūṣayā divam yātā
10. Savitri, having performed service to her husband, is honored in heaven. Likewise, you, (being of such) conduct (vṛtti), have attained heaven by serving your husband.
वरिष्ठा सर्वनारीणामेषा च दिवि देवता ।
रोहिणी च विना चन्द्रं मुहूर्तमपि दृश्यते ॥११॥
11. variṣṭhā sarvanārīṇāmeṣā ca divi devatā ,
rohiṇī ca vinā candraṃ muhūrtamapi dṛśyate.
11. variṣṭhā sarvanārīṇām eṣā ca divi devatā
rohiṇī ca vinā candram muhūrtam api dṛśyate
11. eṣā ca sarvanārīṇām variṣṭhā divi devatā
rohiṇī ca candram vinā muhūrtam api dṛśyate
11. And this (woman) is the most excellent among all women, a deity in heaven. And is Rohini seen without the moon, even for a moment?
एवंविधाश्च प्रवराः स्त्रियो भर्तृदृढव्रताः ।
देवलोके महीयन्ते पुण्येन स्वेन कर्मणा ॥१२॥
12. evaṃvidhāśca pravarāḥ striyo bhartṛdṛḍhavratāḥ ,
devaloke mahīyante puṇyena svena karmaṇā.
12. evaṃvidhāḥ ca pravarāḥ striyaḥ bhartṛdṛḍhavratāḥ
devaloke mahīyante puṇyena svena karmaṇā
12. ca evaṃvidhāḥ pravarāḥ striyaḥ bhartṛdṛḍhavratāḥ
svena puṇyena karmaṇā devaloke mahīyante
12. Such excellent women, firmly devoted to their husbands, are honored in the divine realm (devaloka) by their own virtuous actions (karma).
ततो ऽनसूया संहृष्टा श्रुत्वोक्तं सीतया वचः ।
शिरस्याघ्राय चोवाच मैथिलीं हर्षयन्त्युत ॥१३॥
13. tato'nasūyā saṃhṛṣṭā śrutvoktaṃ sītayā vacaḥ ,
śirasyāghrāya covāca maithilīṃ harṣayantyuta.
13. tataḥ anasūyā saṃhṛṣṭā śrutvā uktam sītayā vacaḥ
śirasi āghrāya ca uvāca maithilīm harṣayantī uta
13. tataḥ saṃhṛṣṭā anasūyā sītayā uktam vacaḥ śrutvā
śirasi āghrāya ca harṣayantī maithilīm uta uvāca
13. Then, Anasuya, greatly pleased, having heard the words spoken by Sita, caressed her head, and spoke to Maithili, delighting her.
नियमैर्विविधैराप्तं तपो हि महदस्ति मे ।
तत् संश्रित्य बलं सीते छन्दये त्वां शुचिव्रते ॥१४॥
14. niyamairvividhairāptaṃ tapo hi mahadasti me ,
tat saṃśritya balaṃ sīte chandaye tvāṃ śucivrate.
14. niyamaiḥ vividhaiḥ āptam tapaḥ hi mahat asti me
tat saṃśritya balam sīte chandaye tvām śucivrate
14. hi me vividhaiḥ niyamaiḥ āptam mahat tapaḥ asti
sīte śucivrate tat balam saṃśritya tvām chandaye
14. Indeed, I have attained great asceticism (tapas) through various observances. O Sita of pure vows, relying on that power, I grant you a wish.
उपपन्नं च युक्तं च वचनं तव मैथिलि ।
प्रीता चास्म्युचितं किं ते करवाणि ब्रवीहि मे ।
कृतमित्यब्रवीत् सीता तपोबलसमन्विताम् ॥१५॥
15. upapannaṃ ca yuktaṃ ca vacanaṃ tava maithili ,
prītā cāsmyucitaṃ kiṃ te karavāṇi bravīhi me ,
kṛtamityabravīt sītā tapobalasamanvitām.
15. upapannam ca yuktam ca vacanam tava
maithili prītā ca asmi ucitam
kim te karavāṇi bravīhi me kṛtam
iti abravīt sītā tapobalasamanvitām
15. maithili tava vacanam ca upapannam
ca yuktam ca prītā asmi te kim
ucitam karavāṇi me bravīhi sītā
tapobalasamanvitām iti kṛtam abravīt
15. "Your words, O Maithili (Sita), are appropriate and fitting. I am pleased. What suitable thing shall I do for you? Tell me!" Sita replied to the one endowed with the power of asceticism (tapas), saying, "It is done."
सा त्वेवमुक्ता धर्मज्ञा तया प्रीततराभवत् ।
सफलं च प्रहर्षं ते हन्त सीते करोम्यहम् ॥१६॥
16. sā tvevamuktā dharmajñā tayā prītatarābhavat ,
saphalaṃ ca praharṣaṃ te hanta sīte karomyaham.
16. sā tu evam uktā dharmajñā tayā prītatarā abhavat
| saphalam ca praharṣam te hanta sīte karomi aham
16. sā dharmajñā tu evam uktā tayā prītatarā abhavat
hanta sīte aham te praharṣam saphalam ca karomi
16. She, who understood the natural law (dharma), thus addressed, became even more pleased by her. "Oh Sītā, indeed, I shall now make your joy fruitful."
इदं दिव्यं वरं माल्यं वस्त्रमाभरणानि च ।
अङ्गरागं च वैदेहि महार्हमनुलेपनम् ॥१७॥
17. idaṃ divyaṃ varaṃ mālyaṃ vastramābharaṇāni ca ,
aṅgarāgaṃ ca vaidehi mahārhamanulepanam.
17. idam divyam varam mālyam vastram ābharaṇāni
ca | aṅgarāgam ca vaidehi mahārham anulepanam
17. vaidehi idam divyam varam mālyam ca vastram
ābharaṇāni ca aṅgarāgam mahārham anulepanam
17. "Oh Vaidehī, this divine, excellent garland, along with clothes and ornaments, and a precious, noble cosmetic paste, an unguent."
मया दत्तमिदं सीते तव गात्राणि शोभयेत् ।
अनुरूपमसंक्लिष्टं नित्यमेव भविष्यति ॥१८॥
18. mayā dattamidaṃ sīte tava gātrāṇi śobhayet ,
anurūpamasaṃkliṣṭaṃ nityameva bhaviṣyati.
18. mayā dattam idam sīte tava gātrāṇi śobhayet
| anurūpam asaṃkliṣṭam nityam eva bhaviṣyati
18. sīte mayā dattam idam tava gātrāṇi śobhayet
(idam) anurūpam asaṃkliṣṭam nityam eva bhaviṣyati
18. "This, given by me, Oh Sītā, will certainly adorn your limbs. It will always be appropriate and unblemished (unfading)."
अङ्गरागेण दिव्येन लिप्ताङ्गी जनकात्मजे ।
शोभयिष्यामि भर्तारं यथा श्रीर्विष्णुमव्ययम् ॥१९॥
19. aṅgarāgeṇa divyena liptāṅgī janakātmaje ,
śobhayiṣyāmi bhartāraṃ yathā śrīrviṣṇumavyayam.
19. aṅgarāgeṇa divyena liptāṅgī janakātmaje |
śobhayiṣyāmi bhartāram yathā śrīḥ viṣṇum avyayam
19. janakātmaje (aham) divyena aṅgarāgeṇa liptāṅgī (sati)
bhartāram śobhayiṣyāmi yathā śrīḥ avyayam viṣṇum (śobhayati)
19. "Oh daughter of Janaka, with this divine cosmetic paste, having anointed my body, I shall adorn my husband, just as Śrī adorns the imperishable Viṣṇu."
सा वस्त्रमङ्गरागं च भूषणानि स्रजस्तथा ।
मैथिली प्रतिजग्राह प्रीतिदानमनुत्तमम् ॥२०॥
20. sā vastramaṅgarāgaṃ ca bhūṣaṇāni srajastathā ,
maithilī pratijagrāha prītidānamanuttamam.
20. sā vastram aṅgarāgam ca bhūṣaṇāni srajaḥ tathā
maithilī pratijagrāha prītidānam anuttamam
20. maithilī sā anuttamam prītidānam vastram
aṅgarāgam ca bhūṣaṇāni tathā srajaḥ pratijagrāha
20. Sita (Maithilī) accepted those excellent garments, body ointments, ornaments, and garlands, which were an unsurpassed gift of affection.
प्रतिगृह्य च तत् सीता प्रीतिदानं यशस्विनी ।
श्लिष्टाञ्जलिपुटा धीरा समुपास्त तपोधनाम् ॥२१॥
21. pratigṛhya ca tat sītā prītidānaṃ yaśasvinī ,
śliṣṭāñjalipuṭā dhīrā samupāsta tapodhanām.
21. pratigṛhya ca tat sītā prītidānam yaśasvinī
śliṣṭāñjalipuṭā dhīrā samupāsta tapodhanām
21. ca tat prītidānam pratigṛhya yaśasvinī dhīrā
sītā śliṣṭāñjalipuṭā tapodhanām samupāsta
21. And having received that gift of affection, the glorious (yaśasvinī) and composed (dhīrā) Sita, with her palms joined in reverence, respectfully attended upon the ascetic woman (tapodhanām).
तथा सीतामुपासीनामनसूया दृढव्रता ।
वचनं प्रष्टुमारेभे कथां कां चिदनुप्रियाम् ॥२२॥
22. tathā sītāmupāsīnāmanasūyā dṛḍhavratā ,
vacanaṃ praṣṭumārebhe kathāṃ kāṃ cidanupriyām.
22. tathā sītām upāsīnām anasūyā dṛḍhavratā
vacanam praṣṭum ārebhe kathām kām cit anupriyām
22. tathā sītām upāsīnām anasūyā dṛḍhavratā
vacanam kām cit anupriyām kathām praṣṭum ārebhe
22. As Sita was thus attending upon her, Anasuya, firm in her vows (dṛḍhavratā), began to ask her a certain pleasing question and story.
स्वयंवरे किल प्राप्ता त्वमनेन यशस्विना ।
राघवेणेति मे सीते कथा श्रुतिमुपागता ॥२३॥
23. svayaṃvare kila prāptā tvamanena yaśasvinā ,
rāghaveṇeti me sīte kathā śrutimupāgatā.
23. svayamvare kila prāptā tvam anena yaśasvinā
rāghaveṇa iti me sīte kathā śrutim upāgatā
23. sīte kila tvam anena yaśasvinā rāghaveṇa
svayamvare prāptā iti eṣā kathā me śrutim upāgatā
23. "Indeed, you were won in a self-choice ceremony (svayaṃvara) by this glorious (yaśasvinā) descendant of Raghu (Rāghaveṇa)," – O Sita, this story has reached my ears.
तां कथां श्रोतुमिच्छामि विस्तरेण च मैथिलि ।
यथानुभूतं कार्त्स्न्येन तन्मे त्वं वक्तुमर्हसि ॥२४॥
24. tāṃ kathāṃ śrotumicchāmi vistareṇa ca maithili ,
yathānubhūtaṃ kārtsnyena tanme tvaṃ vaktumarhasi.
24. tām kathām śrotum icchāmi vistareṇa ca maithili
yathā anubhūtam kārtsnyena tat me tvam vaktum arhasi
24. maithili tām kathām vistareṇa ca śrotum icchāmi tvam
me yathā anubhūtam kārtsnyena tat vaktum arhasi
24. O Maithili, I wish to hear that story in detail. You should tell me the entire account, just as you experienced it fully.
एवमुक्ता तु सा सीता तां ततो धर्मचारिणीम् ।
श्रूयतामिति चोक्त्वा वै कथयामास तां कथाम् ॥२५॥
25. evamuktā tu sā sītā tāṃ tato dharmacāriṇīm ,
śrūyatāmiti coktvā vai kathayāmāsa tāṃ kathām.
25. evam uktā tu sā sītā tām tataḥ dharmacāriṇīm
śrūyatām iti ca uktvā vai kathayāmāsa tām kathām
25. evam uktā sā sītā tu tataḥ tām dharmacāriṇīm
śrūyatām iti vai ca uktvā tām kathām kathayāmāsa
25. Having been thus spoken to, Sita then, to that righteous woman, indeed said 'Listen!' and narrated that story.
मिथिलाधिपतिर्वीरो जनको नाम धर्मवित् ।
क्षत्रधर्मण्यभिरतो न्यायतः शास्ति मेदिनीम् ॥२६॥
26. mithilādhipatirvīro janako nāma dharmavit ,
kṣatradharmaṇyabhirato nyāyataḥ śāsti medinīm.
26. mithilādhipatiḥ vīraḥ janakaḥ nāma dharmavit
kṣatradharmaṇi abhirataḥ nyāyataḥ śāsti medinīm
26. mithilādhipatiḥ vīraḥ janakaḥ nāma dharmavit
kṣatradharmaṇi abhirataḥ nyāyataḥ medinīm śāsti
26. The heroic lord of Mithila, named Janaka, a knower of natural law (dharma), is devoted to the duty of a warrior (kṣatradharma), and justly rules the earth.
तस्य लाङ्गलहस्तस्य कर्षतः क्षेत्रमण्डलम् ।
अहं किलोत्थिता भित्त्वा जगतीं नृपतेः सुता ॥२७॥
27. tasya lāṅgalahastasya karṣataḥ kṣetramaṇḍalam ,
ahaṃ kilotthitā bhittvā jagatīṃ nṛpateḥ sutā.
27. tasya lāṅgalahastasya karṣataḥ kṣetramaṇḍalam
aham kila utthitā bhittvā jagatīm nṛpateḥ sutā
27. tasya lāṅgalahastasya kṣetramaṇḍalam karṣataḥ
aham nṛpateḥ sutā kila jagatīm bhittvā utthitā
27. While he, with a plough in his hand, was cultivating the field, I, the king's daughter, indeed emerged, having split the earth.
स मां दृष्ट्वा नरपतिर्मुष्टिविक्षेपतत्परः ।
पांशु गुण्ठित सर्वाङ्गीं विस्मितो जनको ऽभवत् ॥२८॥
28. sa māṃ dṛṣṭvā narapatirmuṣṭivikṣepatatparaḥ ,
pāṃśu guṇṭhita sarvāṅgīṃ vismito janako'bhavat.
28. saḥ mām dṛṣṭvā narapatiḥ muṣṭi-vikṣepa-tatparaḥ
pāṃśu-guṇṭhita-sarvāṅgīm vismitaḥ janakaḥ abhavat
28. saḥ narapatiḥ janakaḥ pāṃśu-guṇṭhita-sarvāṅgīm
mām dṛṣṭvā muṣṭi-vikṣepa-tatparaḥ vismitaḥ abhavat
28. Upon seeing me, my entire body covered in dust, the king was at first ready to strike with his fist; then Janaka became astonished.
अनपत्येन च स्नेहादङ्कमारोप्य च स्वयम् ।
ममेयं तनयेत्युक्त्वा स्नेहो मयि निपातितः ॥२९॥
29. anapatyena ca snehādaṅkamāropya ca svayam ,
mameyaṃ tanayetyuktvā sneho mayi nipātitaḥ.
29. anapatyena ca snehāt aṅkam āropya ca svayam mama
iyam tanayā iti uktvā snehaḥ mayi nipātitaḥ
29. अनपत्येन च स्नेहात् स्वयम् अङ्कम् आरोप्य च
"इयम् मम तनया" इति उक्त्वा मयि स्नेहः निपातितः
29. And by the childless (king Janaka), out of affection, he himself placed me on his lap. Saying, 'This is my daughter,' he showered his love upon me.
अन्तरिक्षे च वागुक्ताप्रतिमा मानुषी किल ।
एवमेतन्नरपते धर्मेण तनया तव ॥३०॥
30. antarikṣe ca vāguktāpratimā mānuṣī kila ,
evametannarapate dharmeṇa tanayā tava.
30. antarikṣe ca vāk uktā apratimā mānuṣī kila
evam etat narapate dharmeṇa tanayā tava
30. च अन्तरिक्षे अप्रतिमā mānuṣī वाक् उक्ता किलनरपते,
एवम् एतत् धर्मेण तव तनया (अस्ति)
30. And then, an unparalleled, human-like voice indeed spoke from the sky: 'O king, by natural law (dharma), this one is your daughter.'
ततः प्रहृष्टो धर्मात्मा पिता मे मिथिलाधिपः ।
अवाप्तो विपुलामृद्धिं मामवाप्य नराधिपः ॥३१॥
31. tataḥ prahṛṣṭo dharmātmā pitā me mithilādhipaḥ ,
avāpto vipulāmṛddhiṃ māmavāpya narādhipaḥ.
31. tataḥ prahṛṣṭaḥ dharmātmā pitā me mithilādhipaḥ
avāptaḥ vipulām ṛddhim mām avāpya narādhipaḥ
31. ततः मे धर्मात्मा मिथिला-अधिपः पिता प्रहृष्टःमाम् अवाप्य नराधिपः विपुलाम् ऋद्धिम् अवाप्तः।
31. Then my father, the king of Mithila (Mithilādhipa) whose soul was devoted to righteousness (dharma), became greatly delighted. Having found me, that king (Narādhipa) attained immense prosperity.
दत्त्वा चास्मीष्टवद्देव्यै ज्येष्ठायै पुण्यकर्मणा ।
तया संभाविता चास्मि स्निग्धया मातृसौहृदात् ॥३२॥
32. dattvā cāsmīṣṭavaddevyai jyeṣṭhāyai puṇyakarmaṇā ,
tayā saṃbhāvitā cāsmi snigdhayā mātṛsauhṛdāt.
32. dattvā ca asmi iṣṭavat devyai jyeṣṭhāyai puṇyakarmaṇā
| tayā saṃbhāvitā ca asmi snigdhayā mātṛsauhṛdāt
32. puṇyakarmaṇā ca asmi iṣṭavat jyeṣṭhāyai devyai dattvā snigdhayā tayā mātṛsauhṛdāt ca asmi saṃbhāvitā.
32. And through my virtuous deeds (karma), I was favorably offered to the elder goddess (Devī). I was also honored by her, the affectionate one, out of maternal kindness.
पतिसंयोगसुलभं वयो दृष्ट्वा तु मे पिता ।
चिन्तामभ्यगमद्दीनो वित्तनाशादिवाधनः ॥३३॥
33. patisaṃyogasulabhaṃ vayo dṛṣṭvā tu me pitā ,
cintāmabhyagamaddīno vittanāśādivādhanaḥ.
33. patisaṃyogasulabhaṃ vayaḥ dṛṣṭvā tu me pitā |
cintām abhyagamat dīnaḥ vittanāśāt iva adhanaḥ
33. me pitā tu patisaṃyogasulabhaṃ vayaḥ dṛṣṭvā dīnaḥ adhanaḥ vittanāśāt iva cintām abhyagamat.
33. Indeed, seeing my age, which was suitable for union with a husband, my father became distressed and consumed by anxiety, like a poor person after the loss of wealth.
सदृशाच्चापकृष्टाच्च लोके कन्यापिता जनात् ।
प्रधर्षणामवाप्नोति शक्रेणापि समो भुवि ॥३४॥
34. sadṛśāccāpakṛṣṭācca loke kanyāpitā janāt ,
pradharṣaṇāmavāpnoti śakreṇāpi samo bhuvi.
34. sadṛśāt ca apakṛṣṭāt ca loke kanyāpitā janāt |
pradharṣaṇām avāpnoti śakreṇa api samaḥ bhuvi
34. loke kanyāpitā bhuvi śakreṇa api samaḥ sadṛśāt ca apakṛṣṭāt ca janāt pradharṣaṇām avāpnoti.
34. In this world (loka), the father of a daughter, even if he is equal to Indra (Śakra) on earth, experiences humiliation from both superior and inferior people.
तां धर्षणामदूरस्थां संदृश्यात्मनि पार्थिवः ।
चिन्न्तार्णवगतः पारं नाससादाप्लवो यथ ॥३५॥
35. tāṃ dharṣaṇāmadūrasthāṃ saṃdṛśyātmani pārthivaḥ ,
cinntārṇavagataḥ pāraṃ nāsasādāplavo yatha.
35. tām dharṣaṇām adūrasthām saṃdṛśya ātmani pārthivaḥ
| cintārṇavagataḥ pāram na asasāda aplavaḥ yathā
35. pārthivaḥ ātmani adūrasthām tām dharṣaṇām saṃdṛśya cintārṇavagataḥ aplavaḥ yathā pāram na asasāda.
35. Having perceived that impending humiliation within his own being (ātman), the king (pārthiva), having fallen into an ocean of anxiety, could not reach the other shore, just like someone without a boat.
अयोनिजां हि मां ज्ञात्वा नाध्यगच्छत् स चिन्तयन् ।
सदृशं चानुरूपं च महीपालः पतिं मम ॥३६॥
36. ayonijāṃ hi māṃ jñātvā nādhyagacchat sa cintayan ,
sadṛśaṃ cānurūpaṃ ca mahīpālaḥ patiṃ mama.
36. ayonijām hi mām jñātvā na adhyagacchat saḥ cintayan
sadṛśam ca anurūpam ca mahīpālaḥ patim mama
36. mahīpālaḥ saḥ mām ayonijām hi jñātvā cintayan
sadṛśam ca anurūpam ca patim na adhyagacchat mama
36. The king, having realized that I was not born from a womb, pondered and consequently could not find a suitable and appropriate husband for me.
तस्य बुद्धिरियं जाता चिन्तयानस्य संततम् ।
स्वयं वरं तनूजायाः करिष्यामीति धीमतः ॥३७॥
37. tasya buddhiriyaṃ jātā cintayānasya saṃtatam ,
svayaṃ varaṃ tanūjāyāḥ kariṣyāmīti dhīmataḥ.
37. tasya buddhiḥ iyam jātā cintayānasya santatam
svayam varam tanūjāyāḥ kariṣyāmi iti dhīmataḥ
37. tasya dhīmataḥ santatam cintayānasya iyam buddhiḥ
jātā iti (yat) tanūjāyāḥ svayam varam kariṣyāmi
37. This idea occurred to that wise king, who was constantly pondering: "I will arrange a self-choice (svayaṃvara) for my daughter."
महायज्ञे तदा तस्य वरुणेन महात्मना ।
दत्तं धनुर्वरं प्रीत्या तूणी चाक्षय्य सायकौ ॥३८॥
38. mahāyajñe tadā tasya varuṇena mahātmanā ,
dattaṃ dhanurvaraṃ prītyā tūṇī cākṣayya sāyakau.
38. mahāyajñe tadā tasya varuṇena mahātmanā dattam
dhanuḥ varam prītyā tūṇī ca akṣayya sāyakau
38. tadā tasya mahāyajñe mahātmanā varuṇena prītyā
dattam (āsīt) dhanuḥ varam tūṇī ca akṣayya sāyakau
38. Then, during his great ritual (yajña), the revered (mahātman) Varuna lovingly presented an excellent bow, along with two quivers and inexhaustible arrows.
असंचाल्यं मनुष्यैश्च यत्नेनापि च गौरवात् ।
तन्न शक्ता नमयितुं स्वप्नेष्वपि नराधिपाः ॥३९॥
39. asaṃcālyaṃ manuṣyaiśca yatnenāpi ca gauravāt ,
tanna śaktā namayituṃ svapneṣvapi narādhipāḥ.
39. asañcālyam manuṣyaiḥ ca yatnena api ca gauravāt
tat na śaktāḥ namayitum svapneṣu api narādhipāḥ
39. tat asañcālyam (āsīt),
manuṣyaiḥ ca yatnena api ca gauravāt (api na śakyam āsīt); narādhipāḥ svapneṣu api namayitum na śaktāḥ (āsan)
39. That (bow) could not be moved by humans, even with considerable effort, because of its immense weight. Kings were unable to bend it, not even in their dreams.
तद्धनुः प्राप्य मे पित्रा व्याहृतं सत्यवादिना ।
समवाये नरेन्द्राणां पूर्वमामन्त्र्य पार्थिवान् ॥४०॥
40. taddhanuḥ prāpya me pitrā vyāhṛtaṃ satyavādinā ,
samavāye narendrāṇāṃ pūrvamāmantrya pārthivān.
40. tat dhanuḥ prāpya me pitrā vyāhṛtam satyavādinā
samavāye narendrāṇām pūrvam āmantrya pārthivān
40. me satyavādinā pitrā tat dhanuḥ prāpya pūrvam

40. Having obtained that bow, my truth-speaking father declared, after first inviting the rulers to an assembly of kings:
इदं च धनुरुद्यम्य सज्यं यः कुरुते नरः ।
तस्य मे दुहिता भार्या भविष्यति न संशयः ॥४१॥
41. idaṃ ca dhanurudyamya sajyaṃ yaḥ kurute naraḥ ,
tasya me duhitā bhāryā bhaviṣyati na saṃśayaḥ.
41. idam ca dhanuḥ udyamya sajyam yaḥ kurute naraḥ
tasya me duhitā bhāryā bhaviṣyati na saṃśayaḥ
41. yaḥ naraḥ idam dhanuḥ udyamya sajyam kurute,
tasya me duhitā bhāryā bhaviṣyati,
na saṃśayaḥ
41. "And whichever man, having lifted this bow, strings it, my daughter will become his wife; there is no doubt."
तच्च दृष्ट्वा धनुःश्रेष्ठं गौरवाद्गिरिसंनिभम् ।
अभिवाद्य नृपा जग्मुरशक्तास्तस्य तोलने ॥४२॥
42. tacca dṛṣṭvā dhanuḥśreṣṭhaṃ gauravādgirisaṃnibham ,
abhivādya nṛpā jagmuraśaktāstasya tolane.
42. tat ca dṛṣṭvā dhanuḥśreṣṭham gauravāt giri-saṃnibham
abhivādya nṛpāḥ jagmuḥ aśaktāḥ tasya tolane
42. ca nṛpāḥ tat dhanuḥśreṣṭham gauravāt giri-saṃnibham
dṛṣṭvā tasya tolane aśaktāḥ abhivādya jagmuḥ
42. And seeing that excellent bow, resembling a mountain in its immense weight, the kings, unable to lift it, paid homage and then departed.
सुदीर्घस्य तु कालस्य राघवो ऽयं महाद्युतिः ।
विश्वामित्रेण सहितो यज्ञं द्रष्टुं समागतः ॥४३॥
43. sudīrghasya tu kālasya rāghavo'yaṃ mahādyutiḥ ,
viśvāmitreṇa sahito yajñaṃ draṣṭuṃ samāgataḥ.
43. su-dīrghasya tu kālasya rāghavaḥ ayam mahādyutiḥ
viśvāmitreṇa sahitaḥ yajñam draṣṭum samāgataḥ
43. tu su-dīrghasya kālasya (anantaram),
ayam mahādyutiḥ rāghavaḥ viśvāmitreṇa sahitaḥ yajñam draṣṭum samāgataḥ
43. But after a very long time, this Rāghava, endowed with great splendor, arrived accompanied by Viśvāmitra to witness the Vedic ritual (yajña).
लक्ष्मणेन सह भ्रात्रा रामः सत्यपराक्रमः ।
विश्वामित्रस्तु धर्मात्मा मम पित्रा सुपूजितः ॥४४॥
44. lakṣmaṇena saha bhrātrā rāmaḥ satyaparākramaḥ ,
viśvāmitrastu dharmātmā mama pitrā supūjitaḥ.

44. My father greatly honored Rāma, who possessed true valor, along with his brother Lakṣmaṇa, as well as the righteous (dharma) sage Viśvāmitra.
प्रोवाच पितरं तत्र राघवो रामलक्ष्मणौ ।
सुतौ दशरथस्येमौ धनुर्दर्शनकाङ्क्षिणौ ।
इत्युक्तस्तेन विप्रेण तद्धनुः समुपानयत् ॥४५॥
45. provāca pitaraṃ tatra rāghavo rāmalakṣmaṇau ,
sutau daśarathasyemau dhanurdarśanakāṅkṣiṇau ,
ityuktastena vipreṇa taddhanuḥ samupānayat.

45. There, Rāghava (Viśvāmitra) spoke to the father (King Janaka) about Rāma and Lakṣmaṇa. He said, "These two, sons of Daśaratha, are eager to see the bow." Having been thus addressed by that Brahmin (Viśvāmitra), he (Janaka) brought forth that bow.
निमेषान्तरमात्रेण तदानम्य स वीर्यवान् ।
ज्यां समारोप्य झटिति पूरयामास वीर्यवान् ॥४६॥
46. nimeṣāntaramātreṇa tadānamya sa vīryavān ,
jyāṃ samāropya jhaṭiti pūrayāmāsa vīryavān.
46. nimeṣāntaramātreṇa tat ānamya saḥ vīryavān
jyām samāropya jhaṭiti pūrayāmāsa vīryavān
46. saḥ vīryavān nimeṣāntaramātreṇa tat ānamya

46. In the mere blink of an eye, that mighty one (Rāma) bent it. Having quickly strung the bowstring, the powerful one drew it (to its full extent).
तेन पूरयता वेगान्मध्ये भग्नं द्विधा धनुः ।
तस्य शब्दो ऽभवद्भीमः पतितस्याशनेरिव ॥४७॥
47. tena pūrayatā vegānmadhye bhagnaṃ dvidhā dhanuḥ ,
tasya śabdo'bhavadbhīmaḥ patitasyāśaneriva.
47. tena pūrayatā vegān madhye bhagnam dvidhā dhanuḥ
tasya śabdaḥ abhavat bhīmaḥ patitasya aśaneḥ iva
47. tena vegān pūrayatā (sati) dhanuḥ madhye dvidhā bhagnam
tasya śabdaḥ patitasya aśaneḥ iva bhīmaḥ abhavat
47. As he drew (the bow) with great force, it broke in two in the middle. The sound it made was terrifying, like that of a thunderbolt striking.
ततो ऽहं तत्र रामाय पित्रा सत्याभिसंधिना ।
उद्यता दातुमुद्यम्य जलभाजनमुत्तमम् ॥४८॥
48. tato'haṃ tatra rāmāya pitrā satyābhisaṃdhinā ,
udyatā dātumudyamya jalabhājanamuttamam.
48. tataḥ aham tatra rāmāya pitrā satyābhisandhinā
udyatā dātum udyamya jalabhājanam uttamam
48. tataḥ pitrā satyābhisandhinā udyamya uttamam

48. Then, by my father, who was steadfast in truth, I (Sītā) was ready to be given to Rāma, as he was taking up the excellent water-pot (for the ritual).
दीयमानां न तु तदा प्रतिजग्राह राघवः ।
अविज्ञाय पितुश्छन्दमयोध्याधिपतेः प्रभोः ॥४९॥
49. dīyamānāṃ na tu tadā pratijagrāha rāghavaḥ ,
avijñāya pituśchandamayodhyādhipateḥ prabhoḥ.

avijñāya pituḥ chandam ayodhyādhipateḥ prabhoḥ

49. But at that time, Rāma (Rāghava) did not accept her, as she was being offered, without knowing the will of his father, the lord of Ayodhyā (Ayodhyādhipati).
ततः श्वशुरमामन्त्र्य वृद्धं दशरथं नृपम् ।
मम पित्रा अहं दत्ता रामाय विदितात्मने ॥५०॥
50. tataḥ śvaśuramāmantrya vṛddhaṃ daśarathaṃ nṛpam ,
mama pitrā ahaṃ dattā rāmāya viditātmane.
50. tataḥ śvaśuram āmantrya vṛddham daśaratham
nṛpam mama pitrā aham dattā rāmāya viditātmane
50. tataḥ vṛddham nṛpam śvaśuram daśaratham āmantrya,
mama pitrā aham rāmāya viditātmane dattā
50. Then, having addressed my aged father-in-law, King Daśaratha, I (Sītā) was given by my father to Rāma, who was a knower of the (ātman) self.
मम चैवानुजा साध्वी ऊर्मिला प्रियदर्शना ।
भार्यार्थे लक्ष्मणस्यापि दत्ता पित्रा मम स्वयम् ॥५१॥
51. mama caivānujā sādhvī ūrmilā priyadarśanā ,
bhāryārthe lakṣmaṇasyāpi dattā pitrā mama svayam.
51. mama ca eva anujā sādhvī ūrmilā priyadarśanā
bhāryārthe lakṣmaṇasya api dattā pitrā mama svayam
51. ca eva mama sādhvī priyadarśanā anujā ūrmilā api
mama pitrā svayam lakṣmaṇasya bhāryārthe dattā
51. And indeed, my virtuous younger sister, Urūmilā, who was lovely to behold, was also given by my father himself to Lakṣmaṇa as a wife.
एवं दत्तास्मि रामाय तदा तस्मिन् स्वयं वरे ।
अनुरक्ता च धर्मेण पतिं वीर्यवतां वरम् ॥५२॥
52. evaṃ dattāsmi rāmāya tadā tasmin svayaṃ vare ,
anuraktā ca dharmeṇa patiṃ vīryavatāṃ varam.
52. evam dattā asmi rāmāya tadā tasmin svayam vare
anuraktā ca dharmeṇa patim vīryavatām varam
52. evam tadā tasmin svayam vare vīryavatām varam
patim rāmāya dattā asmi ca dharmeṇa anuraktā
52. Thus, in that self-choice ceremony (svayaṃvara), I was given to Rama, the best among the valiant husbands. And I am devoted to him by my intrinsic nature (dharma).
