अभिवाद्य तु कौसल्यां रामः संप्रस्थितो वनम् ।
कृतस्वस्त्ययनो मात्रा धर्मिष्ठे वर्त्मनि स्थितः ॥१॥

1. After saluting Kausalya, Rama departed for the forest. His mother had performed auspicious rites for him as he stood firm on the most righteous path (dharma).
विराजयन् राजसुतो राजमार्गं नरैर्वृतम् ।
हृदयान्याममन्थेव जनस्य गुणवत्तया ॥२॥
2. virājayan rājasuto rājamārgaṃ narairvṛtam ,
hṛdayānyāmamantheva janasya guṇavattayā.
2. virājayan rājasutaḥ rājamārgam naraiḥ vṛtam
hṛdayāni āmamntha iva janasya guṇavattayā

2. The prince, adorning the royal road crowded with people, seemed to churn the hearts of the populace with his virtues.
वैदेही चापि तत् सर्वं न शुश्राव तपस्विनी ।
तदेव हृदि तस्याश्च यौवराज्याभिषेचनम् ॥३॥
3. vaidehī cāpi tat sarvaṃ na śuśrāva tapasvinī ,
tadeva hṛdi tasyāśca yauvarājyābhiṣecanam.
3. vaidehī ca api tat sarvam na śuśrāva tapasvinī
tat eva hṛdi tasyāḥ ca yauvarājyābhiṣecanam
3. ca api tapasvinī vaidehī tat sarvam na śuśrāva

3. And that unfortunate Vaidehi (Sita) did not hear any of that news. Indeed, in her heart, there was only the consecration as crown prince.
देवकार्यं स्म सा कृत्वा कृतज्ञा हृष्टचेतना ।
अभिज्ञा राजधर्माणां राजपुत्रं प्रतीक्षते ॥४॥
4. devakāryaṃ sma sā kṛtvā kṛtajñā hṛṣṭacetanā ,
abhijñā rājadharmāṇāṃ rājaputraṃ pratīkṣate.

4. Having performed her divine duties, she, grateful and with a cheerful mind, and knowledgeable about royal laws (dharma), was waiting for the prince.
प्रविवेशाथ रामस्तु स्ववेश्म सुविभूषितम् ।
प्रहृष्टजनसंपूर्णं ह्रिया किं चिदवाङ्मुखः ॥५॥
5. praviveśātha rāmastu svaveśma suvibhūṣitam ,
prahṛṣṭajanasaṃpūrṇaṃ hriyā kiṃ cidavāṅmukhaḥ.

prahṛṣṭajanasaṃpūrṇam hriyā kiṃ cit avāṅmukhaḥ

5. Then, Rāma entered his own well-decorated abode, which was filled with joyful people. However, he was somewhat downcast, his face turned downwards with a sense of shame.
अथ सीता समुत्पत्य वेपमाना च तं पतिम् ।
अपश्यच्छोकसंतप्तं चिन्ताव्याकुलिलेन्द्रियम् ॥६॥
6. atha sītā samutpatya vepamānā ca taṃ patim ,
apaśyacchokasaṃtaptaṃ cintāvyākulilendriyam.

6. Then Sītā, rising up and trembling, saw her husband (Rāma), who was afflicted by sorrow and whose senses were bewildered by anxiety.
विवर्णवदनं दृष्ट्वा तं प्रस्विन्नममर्षणम् ।
आह दुःखाभिसंतप्ता किमिदानीमिदं प्रभो ॥७॥
7. vivarṇavadanaṃ dṛṣṭvā taṃ prasvinnamamarṣaṇam ,
āha duḥkhābhisaṃtaptā kimidānīmidaṃ prabho.
7. vivarṇavadanam dṛṣṭvā tam prasvinnam amarṣaṇam
āha duḥkhābhisaṃtaptā kim idānīm idam prabho
7. duḥkhābhisaṃtaptā (sā) vivarṇavadanam prasvinnam

7. Having seen him - pale-faced, profusely sweating, and agitated - she (Sītā), deeply distressed by sorrow, asked, "O Lord, what is this now?"
अद्य बार्हस्पतः श्रीमान्युक्तः पुष्यो न राघव ।
प्रोच्यते ब्राह्मणैः प्राज्ञैः केन त्वमसि दुर्मनाः ॥८॥
8. adya bārhaspataḥ śrīmānyuktaḥ puṣyo na rāghava ,
procyate brāhmaṇaiḥ prājñaiḥ kena tvamasi durmanāḥ.
8. adya bārhaspataḥ śrīmān yuktaḥ puṣyaḥ na rāghava
procyate brāhmaṇaiḥ prājñaiḥ kena tvam asi durmanāḥ
8. rāghava adya śrīmān bārhaspataḥ puṣyaḥ (yuktaḥ) na (asti)

8. O Rāghava, today is the auspicious Puṣya (nakṣatra), presided over by Bṛhaspati, as declared by wise Brahmins. So why are you dispirited?
न ते शतशलाकेन जलफेननिभेन च ।
आवृतं वदनं वल्गु छत्रेणाभिविराजते ॥९॥
9. na te śataśalākena jalaphenanibhena ca ,
āvṛtaṃ vadanaṃ valgu chatreṇābhivirājate.

āvṛtam vadanam valgu chatreṇa abhivirājate
9. te valgu vadanam śataśalākena jalaphenanibhena

9. Your beautiful face, covered by a hundred-spoked umbrella resembling water foam, does not shine forth (with splendor).
व्यजनाभ्यां च मुख्याभ्यां शतपत्रनिभेक्षणम् ।
चन्द्रहंसप्रकाशाभ्यां वीज्यते न तवाननम् ॥१०॥
10. vyajanābhyāṃ ca mukhyābhyāṃ śatapatranibhekṣaṇam ,
candrahaṃsaprakāśābhyāṃ vījyate na tavānanam.
10. vyajanābhyām ca mukhyābhyām śatapatranibhekṣaṇam
candrahaṃsaprakāśābhyām vījyate na tava ānanam
10. tava śatapatranibhekṣaṇam ānanam ca mukhyābhyām
candrahaṃsaprakāśābhyām vyajanābhyām na vījyate
10. And your face, with eyes resembling lotus petals, is not being fanned by excellent fans that shine like the moon and swans.
वाग्मिनो बन्दिनश्चापि प्रहृष्टास्त्वं नरर्षभ ।
स्तुवन्तो नाद्य दृश्यन्ते मङ्गलैः सूतमागधाः ॥११॥
11. vāgmino bandinaścāpi prahṛṣṭāstvaṃ nararṣabha ,
stuvanto nādya dṛśyante maṅgalaiḥ sūtamāgadhāḥ.
11. vāgminaḥ bandinaḥ ca api prahr̥ṣṭāḥ tvam nararṣabha
stuvantaḥ na adya dr̥śyante maṅgalaiḥ sūtamāgadhāḥ
11. nararṣabha! vāgminaḥ bandinaḥ ca api prahr̥ṣṭāḥ
stuvantaḥ sūtamāgadhāḥ adya maṅgalaiḥ tvam na dr̥śyante
11. O best among men (nararṣabha)! The eloquent and joyful bards and charioteers, praising you with auspicious songs, are not seen today.
न ते क्षौद्रं च दधि च ब्राह्मणा वेदपारगाः ।
मूर्ध्नि मूर्धावसिक्तस्य दधति स्म विधानतः ॥१२॥
12. na te kṣaudraṃ ca dadhi ca brāhmaṇā vedapāragāḥ ,
mūrdhni mūrdhāvasiktasya dadhati sma vidhānataḥ.
12. na te kṣaudram ca dadhi ca brāhmaṇāḥ vedapāragāḥ
mūrdhni mūrdhāvasiktasya dadhati sma vidhānataḥ
12. vedapāragāḥ brāhmaṇāḥ te mūrdhāvasiktasya mūrdhni
vidhānataḥ kṣaudram ca dadhi ca na dadhati sma
12. The Brahmins, who have mastered the Vedas, no longer ceremonially place honey and curds upon your anointed head.
न त्वां प्रकृतयः सर्वा श्रेणीमुख्याश्च भूषिताः ।
अनुव्रजितुमिच्छन्ति पौरजापपदास्तथा ॥१३॥
13. na tvāṃ prakṛtayaḥ sarvā śreṇīmukhyāśca bhūṣitāḥ ,
anuvrajitumicchanti paurajāpapadāstathā.
13. na tvām prakṛtayaḥ sarvāḥ śreṇīmukhyāḥ ca bhūṣitāḥ
anuvrajitum icchanti paura-jānapadāḥ tathā
13. sarvāḥ bhūṣitāḥ prakṛtayaḥ ca śreṇīmukhyāḥ tathā
ca paura-jānapadāḥ tvām anuvrajitum na icchanti
13. All your subjects (prakṛti), including the chief guild members, and likewise the city and country dwellers, although adorned, do not wish to follow you.
चतुर्भिर्वेगसंपन्नैर्हयैः काञ्चनभूषणैः ।
मुख्यः पुष्यरथो युक्तः किं न गच्छति ते ऽग्रतः ॥१४॥
14. caturbhirvegasaṃpannairhayaiḥ kāñcanabhūṣaṇaiḥ ,
mukhyaḥ puṣyaratho yuktaḥ kiṃ na gacchati te'grataḥ.
14. caturbhiḥ vega-saṃpannaiḥ hayaiḥ kāñcana-bhūṣaṇaiḥ
mukhyaḥ puṣyarathaḥ yuktaḥ kim na gacchati te agrataḥ
14. caturbhiḥ vegasaṃpannaiḥ kāñcanabhūṣaṇaiḥ hayaiḥ
yuktaḥ mukhyaḥ puṣyarathaḥ te agrataḥ kim na gacchati
14. Why does your chief Puṣya chariot, yoked with four swift horses adorned with gold, not go in front of you?
न हस्ती चाग्रतः श्रीमांस्तव लक्षणपूजितः ।
प्रयाणे लक्ष्यते वीर कृष्णमेघगिरि प्रभः ॥१५॥
15. na hastī cāgrataḥ śrīmāṃstava lakṣaṇapūjitaḥ ,
prayāṇe lakṣyate vīra kṛṣṇameghagiri prabhaḥ.
15. na hastī ca agrataḥ śrīmān tava lakṣaṇa-pūjitaḥ
prayāṇe lakṣyate vīra kṛṣṇa-megha-giri-prabhaḥ
15. vīra tava śrīmān lakṣaṇa-pūjitaḥ kṛṣṇa-megha-giri-prabhaḥ
hastī ca prayāṇe agrataḥ na lakṣyate
15. O hero, your glorious elephant, bearing auspicious marks and radiant like a dark cloud and a mountain, is not seen at the forefront during your departure.
न च काञ्चनचित्रं ते पश्यामि प्रियदर्शन ।
भद्रासनं पुरस्कृत्य यान्तं वीरपुरःसरम् ॥१६॥
16. na ca kāñcanacitraṃ te paśyāmi priyadarśana ,
bhadrāsanaṃ puraskṛtya yāntaṃ vīrapuraḥsaram.
16. na ca kāñcana-citram te paśyāmi priyadarśana
bhadra-āsanam puraskṛtya yāntam vīra-puraḥsaram
16. priyadarśana ca na paśyāmi te kāñcana-citram
bhadra-āsanam vīra-puraḥsaram puraskṛtya yāntam
16. O pleasant-looking one, I do not see your gold-decorated, auspicious throne being carried forth with heroes leading it.
अभिषेको यदा सज्जः किमिदानीमिदं तव ।
अपूर्वो मुखवर्णश्च न प्रहर्षश्च लक्ष्यते ॥१७॥
17. abhiṣeko yadā sajjaḥ kimidānīmidaṃ tava ,
apūrvo mukhavarṇaśca na praharṣaśca lakṣyate.
17. abhiṣekaḥ yadā sajjaḥ kim idānīm idam tava
apūrvaḥ mukhavarṇaḥ ca na praharṣaḥ ca lakṣyate
17. yadā abhiṣekaḥ sajjaḥ idānīm tava idam kim ca
mukhavarṇaḥ apūrvaḥ ca praharṣaḥ na lakṣyate
17. When the consecration is ready, what is this condition of yours now? Your facial complexion is unusual, and no joy is observed.
इतीव विलपन्तीं तां प्रोवाच रघुनन्दनः ।
सीते तत्रभवांस्तात प्रव्राजयति मां वनम् ॥१८॥
18. itīva vilapantīṃ tāṃ provāca raghunandanaḥ ,
sīte tatrabhavāṃstāta pravrājayati māṃ vanam.
18. iti iva vilapantīm tām provāca raghunandanaḥ
sīte tatrabhavān tāta pravrājayati mām vanam
18. raghunandanaḥ iti iva vilapantīm tām provāca
sīte tatrabhavān tāta mām vanam pravrājayati
18. To her, who was lamenting in this manner, Rāma (the delight of the Raghu dynasty) spoke: "Sītā, that venerable father is sending me into exile in the forest."
कुले महति संभूते धर्मज्ञे धर्मचारिणि ।
शृणु जानकि येनेदं क्रमेणाभ्यागतं मम ॥१९॥
19. kule mahati saṃbhūte dharmajñe dharmacāriṇi ,
śṛṇu jānaki yenedaṃ krameṇābhyāgataṃ mama.
19. kule mahati sambhūte dharmajñe dharmacāriṇi
śṛṇu jāṇaki yena idam krameṇa abhyāgatam mama
19. jāṇaki mahati kule sambhūte dharmajñe dharmacāriṇi
śṛṇu yena idam krameṇa mama abhyāgatam
19. O Jānakī, you who are born in a great lineage, who understand natural law (dharma) and abide by natural law (dharma), listen to how this situation has gradually come upon me.
राज्ञा सत्यप्रतिज्ञेन पित्रा दशरथेन मे ।
कैकेय्यै प्रीतमनसा पुरा दत्तौ महावरौ ॥२०॥
20. rājñā satyapratijñena pitrā daśarathena me ,
kaikeyyai prītamanasā purā dattau mahāvarau.

kaikeyīyai prītamanasā purā dattau mahāvarau
20. me pitrā rājñā satyapratijñena daśarathena
purā prītamanasā kaikeyīyai mahāvarau dattau
20. My father Daśaratha, the king who was true to his vows, formerly granted two great boons to Kaikeyī with a contented mind.
तयाद्य मम सज्जे ऽस्मिन्नभिषेके नृपोद्यते ।
प्रचोदितः स समयो धर्मेण प्रतिनिर्जितः ॥२१॥
21. tayādya mama sajje'sminnabhiṣeke nṛpodyate ,
pracoditaḥ sa samayo dharmeṇa pratinirjitaḥ.
21. tayā adya mama sajje asmin abhiṣeke nṛpodyate
pracoditaḥ saḥ samayaḥ dharmeṇa pratinirjitaḥ
21. adya tayā nṛpodyate asmin mama sajje abhiṣeke saḥ samayaḥ pracoditaḥ,
(saḥ samayaḥ) dharmeṇa pratinirjitaḥ
21. Today, by her (Kaikeyī), as my coronation, initiated by the king, was being prepared, that pledge (the boons) was invoked. That very pledge has now been fully overcome by (natural) law (dharma).
चतुर्दश हि वर्षाणि वस्तव्यं दण्डके मया ।
पित्रा मे भरतश्चापि यौवराज्ये नियोजितः ।
सो ऽहं त्वामागतो द्रष्टुं प्रस्थितो विजनं वनम् ॥२२॥
22. caturdaśa hi varṣāṇi vastavyaṃ daṇḍake mayā ,
pitrā me bharataścāpi yauvarājye niyojitaḥ ,
so'haṃ tvāmāgato draṣṭuṃ prasthito vijanaṃ vanam.
22. caturdaśa hi varṣāṇi vastavyam daṇḍake
mayā pitrā me bharataḥ ca api
yauvarājye niyojitaḥ saḥ aham tvām
āgataḥ draṣṭum prasthitaḥ vijanam vanam
22. hi caturdaśa varṣāṇi mayā daṇḍake vastavyam ca api me pitrā bharataḥ yauvarājye niyojitaḥ saḥ aham tvām draṣṭum āgataḥ prasthitaḥ vijanam vanam ।
22. Indeed, fourteen years must be spent by me in Daṇḍaka. And Bharata, too, has been appointed to the heir-apparentship by my father. Therefore, I, having come to see you, am now setting out for the desolate forest.
भरतस्य समीपे ते नाहं कथ्यः कदा चन ।
ऋद्धियुक्ता हि पुरुषा न सहन्ते परस्तवम् ।
तस्मान्न ते गुणाः कथ्या भरतस्याग्रतो मम ॥२३॥
23. bharatasya samīpe te nāhaṃ kathyaḥ kadā cana ,
ṛddhiyuktā hi puruṣā na sahante parastavam ,
tasmānna te guṇāḥ kathyā bharatasyāgrato mama.
23. bharatasya samīpe te na aham kathyaḥ
kadā cana ṛddhiyuktāḥ hi puruṣāḥ
na sahante parastavam tasmāt na te
guṇāḥ kathyāḥ bharatasya agrataḥ mama
23. te bharatasya samīpe aham kadā cana na kathyaḥ hi ṛddhiyuktāḥ puruṣāḥ parastavam na sahante tasmāt te guṇāḥ mama bharatasya agrataḥ na kathyāḥ ।
23. You should never mention me in Bharata's presence. For indeed, prosperous individuals do not tolerate the praise of others. Therefore, neither your qualities nor mine should be spoken of before Bharata.
नापि त्वं तेन भर्तव्या विशेषेण कदा चन ।
अनुकूलतया शक्यं समीपे तस्य वर्तितुम् ॥२४॥
24. nāpi tvaṃ tena bhartavyā viśeṣeṇa kadā cana ,
anukūlatayā śakyaṃ samīpe tasya vartitum.
24. na api tvam tena bhartavyā viśeṣeṇa kadā cana
anukūlatayā śakyam samīpe tasya vartitum
24. api tvam tena viśeṣeṇa kadā cana na bhartavyā tasya samīpe anukūlatayā vartitum śakyam ।
24. Moreover, you should never be supported by him in any special way. It is possible to remain near him only by being agreeable.
अहं चापि प्रतिज्ञां तां गुरोः समनुपालयन् ।
वनमद्यैव यास्यामि स्थिरा भव मनस्विनि ॥२५॥
25. ahaṃ cāpi pratijñāṃ tāṃ guroḥ samanupālayan ,
vanamadyaiva yāsyāmi sthirā bhava manasvini.
25. aham ca api pratijñām tām guroḥ samanupālayan
vanam adya eva yāsyāmi sthirā bhava manasvini
25. aham ca api guroḥ tām pratijñām samanupālayan
adya eva vanam yāsyāmi manasvini sthirā bhava
25. And I, fulfilling that promise (pratijñā) of my preceptor (guru), will go to the forest today itself. O noble lady, be steadfast.
याते च मयि कल्याणि वनं मुनिनिषेवितम् ।
व्रतोपवासरतया भवितव्यं त्वयानघे ॥२६॥
26. yāte ca mayi kalyāṇi vanaṃ muniniṣevitam ,
vratopavāsaratayā bhavitavyaṃ tvayānaghe.
26. yāte ca mayi kalyāṇi vanam muniniṣevitam
vratopavāsaratayā bhavitavyam tvayā anaghe
26. ca mayi vanam muniniṣevitam yāte kalyāṇi
anaghe tvayā vratopavāsaratayā bhavitavyam
26. And when I have departed for the forest, O auspicious one, which is frequented by sages, you, O sinless one, must dedicate yourself to vows (vrata) and fasts.
काल्यमुत्थाय देवानां कृत्वा पूजां यथाविधि ।
वन्दितव्यो दशरथः पिता मम नरेश्वरः ॥२७॥
27. kālyamutthāya devānāṃ kṛtvā pūjāṃ yathāvidhi ,
vanditavyo daśarathaḥ pitā mama nareśvaraḥ.
27. kālyam utthāya devānām kṛtvā pūjām yathāvidhi
vanditavyaḥ daśarathaḥ pitā mama nareśvaraḥ
27. kālyam utthāya yathāvidhi devānām pūjām kṛtvā
mama pitā nareśvaraḥ daśarathaḥ vanditavyaḥ
27. Rising early in the morning and performing the worship (pūjā) of the gods according to the prescribed rites, my father, King Daśaratha, the lord of men, should be revered by you.
माता च मम कौसल्या वृद्धा संतापकर्शिता ।
धर्ममेवाग्रतः कृत्वा त्वत्तः संमानमर्हति ॥२८॥
28. mātā ca mama kausalyā vṛddhā saṃtāpakarśitā ,
dharmamevāgrataḥ kṛtvā tvattaḥ saṃmānamarhati.
28. mātā ca mama kausalyā vṛddhā saṃtāpakarśitā
dharmam eva agrataḥ kṛtvā tvattaḥ saṃmānam arhati
28. ca mama mātā kausalyā vṛddhā saṃtāpakarśitā
dharmam eva agrataḥ kṛtvā tvattaḥ saṃmānam arhati
28. And my mother Kausalya, who is aged and emaciated by sorrow, placing her intrinsic nature (dharma) foremost, deserves honor from you.
वन्दितव्याश्च ते नित्यं याः शेषा मम मातरः ।
स्नेहप्रणयसंभोगैः समा हि मम मातरः ॥२९॥
29. vanditavyāśca te nityaṃ yāḥ śeṣā mama mātaraḥ ,
snehapraṇayasaṃbhogaiḥ samā hi mama mātaraḥ.
29. vanditavyāḥ ca te nityam yāḥ śeṣāḥ mama mātaraḥ
| sneha-praṇaya-saṃbhogaiḥ samāḥ hi mama mātaraḥ
29. yāḥ śeṣāḥ mama mātaraḥ te ca nityam vanditavyāḥ
hi mama mātaraḥ sneha-praṇaya-saṃbhogaiḥ samāḥ
29. And those who remain as my mothers should always be honored by you. Indeed, all my mothers are equal in affection, love, and intimacy.
भ्रातृपुत्रसमौ चापि द्रष्टव्यौ च विशेषतः ।
त्वया लक्ष्मणशत्रुघ्नौ प्राणैः प्रियतरौ मम ॥३०॥
30. bhrātṛputrasamau cāpi draṣṭavyau ca viśeṣataḥ ,
tvayā lakṣmaṇaśatrughnau prāṇaiḥ priyatarau mama.
30. bhrātṛ-putra-samau ca api draṣṭavyau ca viśeṣataḥ
| tvayā lakṣmaṇa-śatrughnau prāṇaiḥ priyatarau mama
30. mama prāṇaiḥ priyatarau lakṣmaṇa-śatrughnau ca api
tvayā viśeṣataḥ bhrātṛ-putra-samau ca draṣṭavyau
30. And Lakshmana and Shatrughna, who are dearer to me than life itself, should be regarded by you as equal to (your own) brothers and sons, especially.
विप्रियं न च कर्तव्यं भरतस्य कदा चन ।
स हि राजा प्रभुश्चैव देशस्य च कुलस्य च ॥३१॥
31. vipriyaṃ na ca kartavyaṃ bharatasya kadā cana ,
sa hi rājā prabhuścaiva deśasya ca kulasya ca.
31. vipriyam na ca kartavyam bharatasya kadā cana |
saḥ hi rājā prabhuḥ ca eva deśasya ca kulasya ca
31. bharatasya kadā cana vipriyam ca na kartavyam
saḥ hi deśasya ca kulasya ca rājā ca eva prabhuḥ
31. No displeasure or harm should ever be done to Bharata. For he is indeed the king and lord of both the country and the family.
आराधिता हि शीलेन प्रयत्नैश्चोपसेविताः ।
राजानः संप्रसीदन्ति प्रकुप्यन्ति विपर्यये ॥३२॥
32. ārādhitā hi śīlena prayatnaiścopasevitāḥ ,
rājānaḥ saṃprasīdanti prakupyanti viparyaye.
32. ārādhitāḥ hi śīlena prayatnaiḥ ca upasevitāḥ
| rājānaḥ samprasīdanti prakupyanti viparyaye
32. hi śīlena ārādhitāḥ prayatnaiḥ ca upasevitāḥ
rājānaḥ samprasīdanti viparyaye (te) prakupyanti
32. Indeed, kings, when propitiated with good conduct and served with (great) efforts, become pleased and gracious. But they become enraged in the opposite case.
औरसानपि पुत्रान् हि त्यजन्त्यहितकारिणः ।
समर्थान् संप्रगृह्णन्ति जनानपि नराधिपाः ॥३३॥
33. aurasānapi putrān hi tyajantyahitakāriṇaḥ ,
samarthān saṃpragṛhṇanti janānapi narādhipāḥ.
33. aurasān api putrān hi tyajanti ahitakāriṇaḥ
samarthān saṃpragṛhṇanti janān api narādhipāḥ
33. narādhipāḥ hi ahitakāriṇaḥ aurasān api putrān
tyajanti samarthān janān api saṃpragṛhṇanti
33. Kings indeed abandon even their own legitimate sons if they cause harm. Conversely, they adopt and accept even unrelated individuals who are capable.
अहं गमिष्यामि महावनं प्रिये त्वया हि वस्तव्यमिहैव भामिनि ।
यथा व्यलीकं कुरुषे न कस्य चित्तथा त्वया कार्यमिदं वचो मम ॥३४॥
34. ahaṃ gamiṣyāmi mahāvanaṃ priye tvayā hi vastavyamihaiva bhāmini ,
yathā vyalīkaṃ kuruṣe na kasya cittathā tvayā kāryamidaṃ vaco mama.
34. aham gamiṣyāmi mahāvanam priye
tvayā hi vastavyam iha eva bhāmini
yathā vyalīkam kuruṣe na kasya cit
tathā tvayā kāryam idam vacaḥ mama
34. priye bhāmini aham mahāvanam
gamiṣyāmi hi tvayā iha eva vastavyam
yathā kasya cit vyalīkam na kuruṣe
tathā mama idam vacaḥ tvayā kāryam
34. Oh dear beloved (priye), I shall go to the great forest. Indeed, you, oh beautiful lady (bhāminī), must remain right here. Just as you do no wrong to anyone, so too should this word of mine be carried out by you.
