व्यचरं दण्डकारण्यमृषिमांसानि भक्षयन् ॥२॥
2. nīlajīmūtasaṃkāśastaptakāñcanakuṇḍalaḥ ,
bhayaṃ lokasya janayan kirīṭī parighāyudhaḥ ,
vyacaraṃ daṇḍakāraṇyamṛṣimāṃsāni bhakṣayan.

2. ...resembling a blue cloud, adorned with molten golden earrings, instilling fear in people, crowned, and armed with an iron club - I roamed the Daṇḍaka forest, devouring the flesh of sages.
विश्वामित्रो ऽथ धर्मात्मा मद्वित्रस्तो महामुनिः ।
स्वयं गत्वा दशरथं नरेन्द्रमिदमब्रवीत् ॥३॥
3. viśvāmitro'tha dharmātmā madvitrasto mahāmuniḥ ,
svayaṃ gatvā daśarathaṃ narendramidamabravīt.
3. विश्वामित्रः अथ धर्मात्मा मत् वित्रास्तः महामुनिः
स्वयम् गत्वा दशरथम् नरेन्द्रम् इदम् अब्रवीत्
3. अथ धर्मात्मा महामुनिः विश्वामित्रः मत्-वित्रास्तः (सन्) स्वयम् दशरथम् नरेन्द्रम् गत्वा इदम् अब्रवीत् ।
3. Then the great sage Viśvāmitra, a man of virtuous character (dharma), who was terrified by the disturbances to his Vedic ritual, himself went to King Daśaratha, the lord of men, and spoke this.
अयं रक्षतु मां रामः पर्वकाले समाहितः ।
मारीचान्मे भयं घोरं समुत्पन्नं नरेश्वर ॥४॥
4. ayaṃ rakṣatu māṃ rāmaḥ parvakāle samāhitaḥ ,
mārīcānme bhayaṃ ghoraṃ samutpannaṃ nareśvara.
4. अयम् रक्षतु माम् रामः पर्वकाले समाहितः
मारीचात् मे भयम् घोरम् समुत्पन्नम् नरेश्वर
4. नरेश्वर,
अयम् रामः समाहितः (सन्) पर्वकाले माम् रक्षतु मारीचात् मे घोरम् भयम् समुत्पन्नम् (अस्ति) ।
4. O King (nara-īśvara), may this Rāma, with a concentrated mind, protect me during the sacred time (of the Vedic ritual). A terrible fear (bhaya) has arisen for me from Mārīca.
इत्येवमुक्तो धर्मात्मा राजा दशरथस्तदा ।
प्रत्युवाच महाभागं विश्वामित्रं महामुनिम् ॥५॥
5. ityevamukto dharmātmā rājā daśarathastadā ,
pratyuvāca mahābhāgaṃ viśvāmitraṃ mahāmunim.
5. इति एवम् उक्तः धर्मात्मा राजा दशरथः तदा
प्रत्युवाच महाभागम् विश्वामित्रम् महामुनिम्

5. Having been addressed in this manner, King Daśaratha, a man of virtuous character (dharma), then replied to the highly esteemed great sage Viśvāmitra.
ऊन षोडश वर्षो ऽयमकृतास्त्रश्च राघवः ।
कामं तु मम यत् सैन्यं मया सह गमिष्यति ।
बधिष्यामि मुनिश्रेष्ठ शत्रुं तव यथेप्सितम् ॥६॥
6. ūna ṣoḍaśa varṣo'yamakṛtāstraśca rāghavaḥ ,
kāmaṃ tu mama yat sainyaṃ mayā saha gamiṣyati ,
badhiṣyāmi muniśreṣṭha śatruṃ tava yathepsitam.
6. ऊन षोडश वर्षः अयम् अकृतास्त्रः
च राघवः कामम् तु मम यत् सैन्यम्
मया सह गमिष्यति बधिष्यामि
मुनिश्रेष्ठ शत्रुम् तव यथेप्सितम्
6. मुनिश्रेष्ठ,
अयम् राघवः ऊन-षोडश-वर्षः च अकृतास्त्रः (अस्ति) तु कामम् यत् मम सैन्यम् (अस्ति तत्) मया सह गमिष्यति तव शत्रुम् यथेप्सितम् बधिष्यामि ।
6. This Rāghava (Rāma) is under sixteen years old and has not yet been trained in weaponry. However, whatever army I possess will certainly accompany me. O best of sages, I myself will kill your enemy as you wish.
इत्येवमुक्तः स मुनी राजानं पुनरब्रवीत् ।
रामान्नान्यद्बलं लोके पर्याप्तं तस्य रक्षसः ॥७॥
7. ityevamuktaḥ sa munī rājānaṃ punarabravīt ,
rāmānnānyadbalaṃ loke paryāptaṃ tasya rakṣasaḥ.
7. iti evam uktaḥ sa muniḥ rājānam punaḥ abravīt
rāmāt na anyat balam loke paryāptam tasya rakṣasaḥ
7. sa muniḥ iti evam uktaḥ rājānam punaḥ abravīt loke

7. Thus addressed, the sage spoke again to the king: "No other power in the world, except that of Rama, is sufficient for that demon."
बालो ऽप्येष महातेजाः समर्थस्तस्य निग्रहे ।
गमिष्ये राममादाय स्वस्ति ते ऽस्तु परंतपः ॥८॥
8. bālo'pyeṣa mahātejāḥ samarthastasya nigrahe ,
gamiṣye rāmamādāya svasti te'stu paraṃtapaḥ.
8. bālaḥ api eṣaḥ mahātejāḥ samarthaḥ tasya nigrahe
gamiṣye rāmam ādāya svasti te astu paraṃtapaḥ
8. eṣaḥ bālaḥ api mahātejāḥ samarthaḥ tasya nigrahe
rāmam ādāya gamiṣye paraṃtapaḥ te svasti astu
8. Even this boy, despite his youth, possesses great energy (tejas) and is capable of restraining that demon. I shall take Rama and depart. May all be well with you, O tormentor of enemies!
इत्येवमुक्त्वा स मुनिस्तमादाय नृपात्मजम् ।
जगाम परमप्रीतो विश्वामित्रः स्वमाश्रमम् ॥९॥
9. ityevamuktvā sa munistamādāya nṛpātmajam ,
jagāma paramaprīto viśvāmitraḥ svamāśramam.
9. iti evam uktvā sa muniḥ tam ādāya nṛpātmajam
jagāma paramaprītaḥ viśvāmitraḥ svam āśramam

9. Having spoken thus, the sage Viśvāmitra, greatly pleased, took the king's son (Rama) and went to his own hermitage (āśrama).
तं तदा दण्डकारण्ये यज्ञमुद्दिश्य दीक्षितम् ।
बभूवावस्थितो रामश्चित्रं विस्फारयन्धनुः ॥१०॥
10. taṃ tadā daṇḍakāraṇye yajñamuddiśya dīkṣitam ,
babhūvāvasthito rāmaścitraṃ visphārayandhanuḥ.
10. tam tadā daṇḍakāraṇye yajñam uddiśya dīkṣitam
babhūva avasthitaḥ rāmaḥ citram visphārayan dhanuḥ
10. tadā daṇḍakāraṇye yajñam uddiśya dīkṣitam tam
rāmaḥ citram dhanuḥ visphārayan avasthitaḥ babhūva
10. Then, (when) that sage (Viśvāmitra) was consecrated for the Vedic ritual (yajña) in the Daṇḍaka forest, Rama stood there, marvelously stretching his bow.
अजातव्यञ्जनः श्रीमान्बालः श्यामः शुभेक्षणः ।
एकवस्त्रधरो धन्वी शिखी कनकमालया ॥११॥
11. ajātavyañjanaḥ śrīmānbālaḥ śyāmaḥ śubhekṣaṇaḥ ,
ekavastradharo dhanvī śikhī kanakamālayā.
11. ajāta-vyañjanaḥ śrīmān bālaḥ śyāmaḥ śubhekṣaṇaḥ
eka-vastra-dharaḥ dhanvī śikhī kanaka-mālayā
11. bālaḥ ajāta-vyañjanaḥ śrīmān śyāmaḥ śubhekṣaṇaḥ
eka-vastra-dharaḥ dhanvī śikhī kanaka-mālayā
11. A glorious young boy, beardless, dark-complexioned, with beautiful eyes, wearing a single garment, armed with a bow, and adorned with a topknot and a golden garland.
शोभयन्दण्डकारण्यं दीप्तेन स्वेन तेजसा ।
अदृश्यत तदा रामो बालचन्द्र इवोदितः ॥१२॥
12. śobhayandaṇḍakāraṇyaṃ dīptena svena tejasā ,
adṛśyata tadā rāmo bālacandra ivoditaḥ.

adṛśyata tadā rāmaḥ bālacandraḥ iva uditaḥ

12. Adorning the Daṇḍaka forest with his own radiant splendor, Rāma then appeared, like the newly risen moon.
ततो ऽहं मेघसंकाशस्तप्तकाञ्चनकुण्डलः ।
बली दत्तवरो दर्पादाजगाम तदाश्रमम् ॥१३॥
13. tato'haṃ meghasaṃkāśastaptakāñcanakuṇḍalaḥ ,
balī dattavaro darpādājagāma tadāśramam.
13. tataḥ aham meghasaṃkāśaḥ tapta-kāñcana-kuṇḍalaḥ
balī datta-varaḥ darpāt ājagāma tadāśramam
13. tataḥ aham meghasaṃkāśaḥ tapta-kāñcana-kuṇḍalaḥ
balī datta-varaḥ darpāt tadāśramam ājagāma
13. Then I, cloud-like in appearance, with earrings of molten gold, powerful and having received a boon, proudly came to his hermitage.
तेन दृष्टः प्रविष्टो ऽहं सहसैवोद्यतायुधः ।
मां तु दृष्ट्वा धनुः सज्यमसंभ्रान्तश्चकार ह ॥१४॥
14. tena dṛṣṭaḥ praviṣṭo'haṃ sahasaivodyatāyudhaḥ ,
māṃ tu dṛṣṭvā dhanuḥ sajyamasaṃbhrāntaścakāra ha.
14. tena dṛṣṭaḥ praviṣṭaḥ aham sahasā eva udyata-āyudhaḥ
mām tu dṛṣṭvā dhanuḥ sajyam asaṃbhrāntaḥ cakāra ha
14. tena dṛṣṭaḥ udyata-āyudhaḥ aham sahasā eva praviṣṭaḥ
tu mām dṛṣṭvā asaṃbhrāntaḥ dhanuḥ sajyam ha cakāra
14. I, seen by him, entered suddenly with my weapon raised. But upon seeing me, he, unperplexed, indeed strung his bow.
अवजानन्नहं मोहाद्बालो ऽयमिति राघवम् ।
विश्वामित्रस्य तां वेदिमध्यधावं कृतत्वरः ॥१५॥
15. avajānannahaṃ mohādbālo'yamiti rāghavam ,
viśvāmitrasya tāṃ vedimadhyadhāvaṃ kṛtatvaraḥ.
15. avajānan aham mohāt bālaḥ ayam iti rāghavam |
viśvāmitrasya tām vedim adhyadhāvam kṛtatvaraḥ
15. aham mohāt ayam bālaḥ iti rāghavam avajānan
kṛtatvaraḥ viśvāmitrasya tām vedim adhyadhāvam
15. I, out of delusion, disregarding that Rāghava, thinking 'This is just a boy,' ran swiftly towards that altar of Viśvāmitra.
तेन मुक्तस्ततो बाणः शितः शत्रुनिबर्हणः ।
तेनाहं ताडितः क्षिप्तः समुद्रे शतयोजने ॥१६॥
16. tena muktastato bāṇaḥ śitaḥ śatrunibarhaṇaḥ ,
tenāhaṃ tāḍitaḥ kṣiptaḥ samudre śatayojane.
16. tena muktaḥ tataḥ bāṇaḥ śitaḥ śatrunibarhaṇaḥ
| tena aham tāḍitaḥ kṣiptaḥ samudre śatayojane
16. tataḥ tena śitaḥ śatrunibarhaṇaḥ bāṇaḥ muktaḥ
tena aham tāḍitaḥ śatayojane samudre kṣiptaḥ
16. Then, a sharp, foe-destroying arrow was released by him. Struck by that, I was hurled into the ocean, a hundred yojanas distant.
रामस्य शरवेगेन निरस्तो भ्रान्तचेतनः ।
पातितो ऽहं तदा तेन गम्भीरे सागराम्भसि ।
प्राप्य संज्ञां चिरात्तात लङ्कां प्रति गतः पुरीम् ॥१७॥
17. rāmasya śaravegena nirasto bhrāntacetanaḥ ,
pātito'haṃ tadā tena gambhīre sāgarāmbhasi ,
prāpya saṃjñāṃ cirāttāta laṅkāṃ prati gataḥ purīm.
17. rāmasya śaravegena nirastaḥ bhrāntacetanaḥ
| pātitaḥ aham tadā tena
gambhīre sāgarāmbhasi | prāpya saṃjñām

17. Overthrown by the force of Rama's arrow, and with my consciousness bewildered, I was then cast by him into the deep ocean waters. O dear one, having regained consciousness after a long time, I returned to the city of Laṅkā.
एवमस्मि तदा मुक्तः सहायास्ते निपातिताः ।
अकृतास्त्रेण रामेण बालेनाक्लिष्टकर्मणा ॥१८॥
18. evamasmi tadā muktaḥ sahāyāste nipātitāḥ ,
akṛtāstreṇa rāmeṇa bālenākliṣṭakarmaṇā.
18. evam asmi tadā muktaḥ sahāyāḥ te nipātitāḥ
| akṛtāstreṇa rāmeṇa bālena akliṣṭakarmaṇā
18. evam tadā asmi muktaḥ te sahāyāḥ akṛtāstreṇa
bālena akliṣṭakarmaṇā rāmeṇa nipātitāḥ
18. Thus, I was then released, but my companions were struck down by that boy Rama, who had not yet mastered weapons and whose actions (karma) were effortless.
तन्मया वार्यमाणस्त्वं यदि रामेण विग्रहम् ।
करिष्यस्यापदं घोरां क्षिप्रं प्राप्य नशिष्यसि ॥१९॥
19. tanmayā vāryamāṇastvaṃ yadi rāmeṇa vigraham ,
kariṣyasyāpadaṃ ghorāṃ kṣipraṃ prāpya naśiṣyasi.
19. tat mayā vāryamāṇaḥ tvam yadi rāmeṇa vigraham
kariṣyasi āpadam ghorām kṣipram prāpya naśiṣyasi
19. yadi tvam mayā tat vāryamāṇaḥ rāmeṇa vigraham
kariṣyasi ghorām āpadam kṣipram prāpya naśiṣyasi
19. If, despite my efforts to restrain you, you engage in conflict with Rāma, you will swiftly meet a terrible calamity and be destroyed.
क्रीडा रतिविधिज्ञानां समाजोत्सवशालिनाम् ।
रक्षसां चैव संतापमनर्थं चाहरिष्यसि ॥२०॥
20. krīḍā ratividhijñānāṃ samājotsavaśālinām ,
rakṣasāṃ caiva saṃtāpamanarthaṃ cāhariṣyasi.
20. krīḍāratividhijñānām samājotsavaśālinām
rakṣasām ca eva saṃtāpam anartham ca āhariṣyasi
20. tvam krīḍāratividhijñānām samājotsavaśālinām
rakṣasām ca eva saṃtāpam ca anartham āhariṣyasi
20. You will bring torment and misfortune upon the rākṣasas, who are skilled in the arts of sport and pleasure and accustomed to social gatherings and festivals.
हर्म्यप्रासादसंबाधां नानारत्नविभूषिताम् ।
द्रक्ष्यसि त्वं पुरीं लङ्कां विनष्टां मैथिलीकृते ॥२१॥
21. harmyaprāsādasaṃbādhāṃ nānāratnavibhūṣitām ,
drakṣyasi tvaṃ purīṃ laṅkāṃ vinaṣṭāṃ maithilīkṛte.
21. harmyaprāsādasaṃbādhām nānāratnavibhūṣitām
drakṣyasi tvam purīm laṅkām vinaṣṭām maithilīkṛte
21. tvam harmyaprāsādasaṃbādhām nānāratnavibhūṣitām
maithilīkṛte vinaṣṭām purīm laṅkām drakṣyasi
21. You will see the city of Laṅkā, crowded with mansions and palaces and adorned with various jewels, completely destroyed for the sake of Sītā.
अकुर्वन्तो ऽपि पापानि शुचयः पापसंश्रयात् ।
परपापैर्विनश्यन्ति मत्स्या नागह्रदे यथा ॥२२॥
22. akurvanto'pi pāpāni śucayaḥ pāpasaṃśrayāt ,
parapāpairvinaśyanti matsyā nāgahrade yathā.
22. akurvantaḥ api pāpāni śucayaḥ pāpasaṃśrayāt
parapāpaiḥ vinaśyanti matsyāḥ nāgahṛde yathā
22. yathā matsyāḥ nāgahṛde vinaśyanti,
akurvantaḥ api pāpāni śucayaḥ pāpasaṃśrayāt parapāpaiḥ vinaśyanti
22. Even those who are pure and do not commit evil (karma) perish due to their association with evil (karma), by the evil (karma) of others, just as fish perish in a Nāga lake.
दिव्यचन्दनदिग्धाङ्गान्दिव्याभरणभूषितान् ।
द्रक्ष्यस्यभिहतान्भूमौ तव दोषात्तु राक्षसान् ॥२३॥
23. divyacandanadigdhāṅgāndivyābharaṇabhūṣitān ,
drakṣyasyabhihatānbhūmau tava doṣāttu rākṣasān.
23. divya-candana-digdhāṅgān divya-ābharaṇa-bhūṣitān
drakṣyasi abhihatān bhūmau tava doṣāt tu rākṣasān
23. tvam drakṣyasi divya-candana-digdhāṅgān
divya-ābharaṇa-bhūṣitān rākṣasān tava doṣāt tu bhūmau abhihatān
23. You will see the Rākṣasas, whose bodies are smeared with divine sandalwood paste and who are adorned with divine ornaments, struck down on the ground because of your transgression.
हृतदारान् सदारांश्च दशविद्रवतो दिशः ।
हतशेषानशरणान्द्रक्ष्यसि त्वं निशाचरान् ॥२४॥
24. hṛtadārān sadārāṃśca daśavidravato diśaḥ ,
hataśeṣānaśaraṇāndrakṣyasi tvaṃ niśācarān.
24. hṛta-dārān sa-dārān ca daśa vidravataḥ diśaḥ
hata-śeṣān aśaraṇān drakṣyasi tvam niśācarān
24. tvam drakṣyasi hṛta-dārān ca sa-dārān daśa
diśaḥ vidravataḥ hata-śeṣān aśaraṇān niśācarān
24. You will see the night-roaming Rākṣasas (niśācara), those whose wives have been abducted and those who are still with their wives, fleeing in all ten directions, and those who remain after the slaughter, helpless.
शरजालपरिक्षिप्तामग्निज्वालासमावृताम् ।
प्रदग्धभवनां लङ्कां द्रक्ष्यसि त्वमसंशयम् ॥२५॥
25. śarajālaparikṣiptāmagnijvālāsamāvṛtām ,
pradagdhabhavanāṃ laṅkāṃ drakṣyasi tvamasaṃśayam.
25. śara-jāla-parikṣiptām agni-jvālā-samāvṛtām
pradagdha-bhavanām laṅkām drakṣyasi tvam asaṃśayam
25. tvam asaṃśayam drakṣyasi śara-jāla-parikṣiptām
agni-jvālā-samāvṛtām pradagdha-bhavanām laṅkām
25. You will undoubtedly see Lanka, enveloped by a shower of arrows, engulfed by flames of fire, and with its buildings completely burnt.
प्रमदानां सहस्राणि तव राजन्परिग्रहः ।
भव स्वदारनिरतः स्वकुलं रक्षराक्षस ॥२६॥
26. pramadānāṃ sahasrāṇi tava rājanparigrahaḥ ,
bhava svadāranirataḥ svakulaṃ rakṣarākṣasa.
26. pramadānām sahasrāṇi tava rājan parigrahaḥ
bhava sva-dāra-nirataḥ sva-kulam rakṣa rākṣasa
26. rājan,
pramadānām sahasrāṇi tava parigrahaḥ.
bhava sva-dāra-nirataḥ.
rākṣasa,
sva-kulam rakṣa
26. O King, you possess thousands of women as your wives. Be devoted to your own wives and protect your lineage, O Rākṣasa.
मानं वृद्धिं च राज्यं च जीवितं चेष्टमात्मनः ।
यदीच्छसि चिरं भोक्तुं मा कृथा राम विप्रियम् ॥२७॥
27. mānaṃ vṛddhiṃ ca rājyaṃ ca jīvitaṃ ceṣṭamātmanaḥ ,
yadīcchasi ciraṃ bhoktuṃ mā kṛthā rāma vipriyam.
27. mānam vṛddhim ca rājyam ca jīvitam ca iṣṭam ātmanaḥ
yadi icchasi ciram bhoktum mā kṛthāḥ rāma vipriyam
27. rāma yadi mānam vṛddhim ca rājyam ca iṣṭam ātmanaḥ
jīvitam ca ciram bhoktum icchasi vipriyam mā kṛthāḥ
27. O Rāma, if you wish to enjoy honor, prosperity, a kingdom, and your own dear life (ātman) for a long time, do not do anything displeasing.
निवार्यमाणः सुहृदा मया भृशं प्रसह्य सीतां यदि धर्षयिष्यसि ।
गमिष्यसि क्षीणबलः सबान्धवो यमक्षयं रामशरात्तजीवितः ॥२८॥
28. nivāryamāṇaḥ suhṛdā mayā bhṛśaṃ prasahya sītāṃ yadi dharṣayiṣyasi ,
gamiṣyasi kṣīṇabalaḥ sabāndhavo yamakṣayaṃ rāmaśarāttajīvitaḥ.
28. nivāryamāṇaḥ suhṛdā mayā bhṛśam
prasahya sītām yadi dharṣayiṣyasi
gamiṣyasi kṣīṇabalaḥ sabāndhavaḥ
yamakṣayam rāmaśarāttajīvitaḥ
28. yadi mayā suhṛdā bhṛśam nivāryamāṇaḥ sītām prasahya dharṣayiṣyasi,
kṣīṇabalaḥ sabāndhavaḥ rāmaśarāttajīvitaḥ yamakṣayam gamiṣyasi
28. If, despite being strongly prevented by me, your well-wisher, you forcibly violate Sītā, you will go to the abode of Yama, with your strength diminished, along with your relatives, and your life taken by Rāma's arrows.
