स सागरमनाधृष्यमतिक्रम्य महाबलः ।
त्रिकूटशिखरे लङ्कां स्थितां स्वस्थो ददर्श ह ॥१॥
1. sa sāgaramanādhṛṣyamatikramya mahābalaḥ ,

1. The mighty Hanumān, having overcome the unassailable ocean, then comfortably saw Laṅkā situated on the peak of Mount Trikūṭa.

अभिवृष्टः स्थितस्तत्र बभौ पुष्पमयो यथा ॥२॥
2. tataḥ pādapamuktena puṣpavarṣeṇa vīryavān ,

2. Thereafter, showered by a rain of flowers released from the trees, the valorous Hanumān stood there, appearing as if he were made of flowers.
योजनानां शतं श्रीमांस्तीर्त्वाप्युत्तमविक्रमः ।
अनिश्वसन् कपिस्तत्र न ग्लानिमधिगच्छति ॥३॥
3. yojanānāṃ śataṃ śrīmāṃstīrtvāpyuttamavikramaḥ ,
aniśvasan kapistatra na glānimadhigacchati.

3. The glorious monkey (Hanumān), possessing supreme valor, having crossed even a hundred yojanas, did not gasp for breath there and did not experience any weariness.
शतान्यहं योजनानां क्रमेयं सुबहून्यपि ।
किं पुनः सागरस्यान्तं संख्यातं शतयोजनम् ॥४॥
4. śatānyahaṃ yojanānāṃ krameyaṃ subahūnyapi ,
kiṃ punaḥ sāgarasyāntaṃ saṃkhyātaṃ śatayojanam.
4. śatāni aham yojanānām krameyam subahūni api kim
punaḥ sāgarasya antam saṅkhyātam śatayojanam

4. I could traverse hundreds of yojanas, even very many more. What then to speak of the ocean's limit, which is measured at a mere hundred yojanas?
स तु वीर्यवतां श्रेष्ठः प्लवतामपि चोत्तमः ।
जगाम वेगवांल् लङ्कां लङ्घयित्वा महोदधिम् ॥५॥
5. sa tu vīryavatāṃ śreṣṭhaḥ plavatāmapi cottamaḥ ,
jagāma vegavāṃl laṅkāṃ laṅghayitvā mahodadhim.
5. saḥ tu vīryavatām śreṣṭhaḥ plavatām api ca uttamaḥ
| jagāma vegavān laṅkām laṅghayitvā mahodadhim

5. He, indeed, the best among the mighty and also the foremost among those who leap, swiftly reached Laṅkā after crossing the great ocean.
शाद्वलानि च नीलानि गन्धवन्ति वनानि च ।
गण्डवन्ति च मध्येन जगाम नगवन्ति च ॥६॥
6. śādvalāni ca nīlāni gandhavanti vanāni ca ,
gaṇḍavanti ca madhyena jagāma nagavanti ca.

6. He passed through the midst of green, verdant, and fragrant forests, and regions adorned with prominent features and mountains.
शैलांश्च तरुसंछन्नान् वनराजीश्च पुष्पिताः ।
अभिचक्राम तेजस्वी हनुमान्प्लवगर्षभः ॥७॥
7. śailāṃśca tarusaṃchannān vanarājīśca puṣpitāḥ ,
abhicakrāma tejasvī hanumānplavagarṣabhaḥ.

7. The resplendent Hanumān, chief among the monkeys (plavagarṣabha), approached mountains densely covered with trees and blossoming rows of forests.
स तस्मिन्नचले तिष्ठन् वनान्युपवनानि च ।
स नगाग्रे च तां लङ्कां ददर्श पवनात्मजः ॥८॥
8. sa tasminnacale tiṣṭhan vanānyupavanāni ca ,
sa nagāgre ca tāṃ laṅkāṃ dadarśa pavanātmajaḥ.
8. saḥ tasmin acale tiṣṭhan vanāni upavanāni ca |
saḥ naga agre ca tām laṅkām dadarśa pavana ātmajaḥ

8. Standing on that mountain, Hanumān, the son of the wind (pavanātmaja), saw the forests and groves. From the mountain peak, he then beheld that city of Laṅkā.
सरलान् कर्णिकारांश्च खर्जूरांश्च सुपुष्पितान् ।
प्रियालान्मुचुलिन्दांश्च कुटजान् केतकानपि ॥९॥
9. saralān karṇikārāṃśca kharjūrāṃśca supuṣpitān ,
priyālānmuculindāṃśca kuṭajān ketakānapi.

9. Straight sarala trees, karṇikāra trees, and profusely blooming date palms; priyāla and muculinda trees, kuṭaja trees, and also ketaka trees.
प्रियङ्गून् गन्धपूर्णांश्च नीपान् सप्तच्छदांस्तथा ।
असनान् कोविदारांश्च करवीरांश्च पुष्पितान् ॥१०॥
10. priyaṅgūn gandhapūrṇāṃśca nīpān saptacchadāṃstathā ,
asanān kovidārāṃśca karavīrāṃśca puṣpitān.

10. Fragrant priyaṅgu trees, nīpa trees, and saptacchada trees; asana trees, kovidāra trees, and blooming karavīra plants.
पुष्पभारनिबद्धांश्च तथा मुकुलितानपि ।
पादपान् विहगाकीर्णान्पवनाधूतमस्तकान् ॥११॥
11. puṣpabhāranibaddhāṃśca tathā mukulitānapi ,
pādapān vihagākīrṇānpavanādhūtamastakān.

11. Also, trees laden with heavy blossoms, and those that are budding; trees teeming with birds, and those whose tops sway in the wind.
हंसकारण्डवाकीर्णा वापीः पद्मोत्पलायुताः ।
आक्रीडान् विविधान् रम्यान् विविधांश्च जलाशयान् ॥१२॥
12. haṃsakāraṇḍavākīrṇā vāpīḥ padmotpalāyutāḥ ,
ākrīḍān vividhān ramyān vividhāṃśca jalāśayān.

12. Ponds teeming with swans and kāraṇḍava ducks, adorned with lotuses and water lilies; diverse and delightful pleasure-grounds, and various water reservoirs.
संततान् विविधैर्वृक्षैः सर्वर्तुफलपुष्पितैः ।
उद्यानानि च रम्याणि ददर्श कपिकुञ्जरः ॥१३॥
13. saṃtatān vividhairvṛkṣaiḥ sarvartuphalapuṣpitaiḥ ,
udyānāni ca ramyāṇi dadarśa kapikuñjaraḥ.

13. The foremost among monkeys (Hanuman) saw beautiful gardens, covered with various trees that bore fruits and flowers in all seasons.
समासाद्य च लक्ष्मीवांल् लङ्कां रावणपालिताम् ।
परिखाभिः सपद्माभिः सोत्पलाभिरलंकृताम् ॥१४॥
14. samāsādya ca lakṣmīvāṃl laṅkāṃ rāvaṇapālitām ,
parikhābhiḥ sapadmābhiḥ sotpalābhiralaṃkṛtām.

14. And the glorious (lakṣmīvān) Hanuman, having reached Lanka, which was protected by Ravana and adorned with moats filled with lotuses and water-lilies.
सीतापहरणार्थेन रावणेन सुरक्षिताम् ।
समन्ताद्विचरद्भिश्च राक्षसैरुग्रधन्विभिः ॥१५॥
15. sītāpaharaṇārthena rāvaṇena surakṣitām ,
samantādvicaradbhiśca rākṣasairugradhanvibhiḥ.

15. [Lanka was] well-protected by Ravana for the abduction of Sita, and by rākṣasas, fierce bowmen, patrolling all around.
काञ्चनेनावृतां रम्यां प्राकारेण महापुरीम् ।
अट्टालकशताकीर्णां पताकाध्वजमालिनीम् ॥१६॥
16. kāñcanenāvṛtāṃ ramyāṃ prākāreṇa mahāpurīm ,
aṭṭālakaśatākīrṇāṃ patākādhvajamālinīm.
16. kāñcanena āvṛtām ramyām prākāreṇa mahāpurīm

16. [He saw] the beautiful great city, surrounded by a golden wall, teeming with hundreds of watchtowers, and adorned with lines of banners and flags.
तोरणैः काञ्चनैर्दिव्यैर्लतापङ्क्तिविचित्रितैः ।
ददर्श हनुमांल् लङ्कां दिवि देवपुरीमिव ॥१७॥
17. toraṇaiḥ kāñcanairdivyairlatāpaṅktivicitritaiḥ ,
dadarśa hanumāṃl laṅkāṃ divi devapurīmiva.

17. Hanumān saw Lankā, adorned with divine golden archways intricately designed with rows of vines, appearing like a city of the gods in the heavens.
गिरिमूर्ध्नि स्थितां लङ्कां पाण्डुरैर्भवनैः शुभैः ।
ददर्श स कपिः श्रीमान्पुरमाकाशगं यथा ॥१८॥
18. girimūrdhni sthitāṃ laṅkāṃ pāṇḍurairbhavanaiḥ śubhaiḥ ,
dadarśa sa kapiḥ śrīmānpuramākāśagaṃ yathā.
18. giri-mūrdhni sthitām laṅkām pāṇḍuraiḥ bhavanaiḥ
śubhaiḥ dadarśa saḥ kapiḥ śrīmān puram ākāśa-gam yathā
18. saḥ śrīmān kapiḥ giri-mūrdhni sthitām śubhaiḥ pāṇḍuraiḥ
bhavanaiḥ laṅkām ākāśa-gam puram yathā dadarśa
18. That glorious monkey (kapi) saw Lankā situated on a mountain peak, with beautiful white mansions, like a city moving in the sky.
पालितां राक्षसेन्द्रेण निर्मितां विश्वकर्मणा ।
प्लवमानामिवाकाशे ददर्श हनुमान्पुरीम् ॥१९॥
19. pālitāṃ rākṣasendreṇa nirmitāṃ viśvakarmaṇā ,
plavamānāmivākāśe dadarśa hanumānpurīm.

plavamānām iva ākāśe dadarśa hanumān purīm

19. Hanumān saw the city (purī) protected by the lord of rākṣasas (rākṣasendra), built by Viśvakarmā, as if floating in the sky.
संपूर्णां राक्षसैर्घोरैर्नागैर्भोगवतीमिव ।
अचिन्त्यां सुकृतां स्पष्टां कुबेराध्युषितां पुरा ॥२०॥
20. saṃpūrṇāṃ rākṣasairghorairnāgairbhogavatīmiva ,
acintyāṃ sukṛtāṃ spaṣṭāṃ kuberādhyuṣitāṃ purā.
20. sampūrṇām rākṣasaiḥ ghoraiḥ nāgaiḥ bhogavatīm
iva acintyām sukṛtām spaṣṭām kuberādhyuṣitām purā
20. sampūrṇām ghoraiḥ rākṣasaiḥ nāgaiḥ bhogavatīm

20. (He saw Lankā) full of terrifying rākṣasas (rākṣasa), like Bhogavatī (the city of nāgas) with its serpents (nāga), inconceivable, well-built, clearly laid out, and formerly inhabited by Kubera.
दंष्ट्रिभिर्बहुभिः शूरैः शूलपट्टिशपाणिभिः ।
रक्षितां राक्षसैर्घोरैर्गुहामाशीविषैरपि ॥२१॥
21. daṃṣṭribhirbahubhiḥ śūraiḥ śūlapaṭṭiśapāṇibhiḥ ,
rakṣitāṃ rākṣasairghorairguhāmāśīviṣairapi.
21. daṃṣṭribhiḥ bahubhiḥ śūraiḥ śūlapaṭṭiśapāṇibhiḥ
rakṣitām rākṣasaiḥ ghoraiḥ guhām āśīviṣaiḥ api
21. guhām rakṣitām bahubhiḥ śūraiḥ daṃṣṭribhiḥ ghoraiḥ
śūlapaṭṭiśapāṇibhiḥ rākṣasaiḥ api āśīviṣaiḥ
21. The cave, protected by many valiant, dreadful rākṣasas with fangs, who held spears and pikes in their hands, and also by venomous serpents.
वप्रप्राकारजघनां विपुलाम्बुनवाम्बराम् ।
शतघ्नीशूलकेशान्तामट्टालकवतंसकाम् ॥२२॥
22. vapraprākārajaghanāṃ vipulāmbunavāmbarām ,
śataghnīśūlakeśāntāmaṭṭālakavataṃsakām.

22. It had ramparts and walls as its hips, abundant water as its fresh garment, śataghnī weapons and spears as its hair ornaments, and watchtowers as its ear adornments.
द्वारमुत्तरमासाद्य चिन्तयामास वानरः ।
कैलासशिखरप्रख्यमालिखन्तमिवाम्बरम् ।
ध्रियमाणमिवाकाशमुच्छ्रितैर्भवनोत्तमैः ॥२३॥
23. dvāramuttaramāsādya cintayāmāsa vānaraḥ ,
kailāsaśikharaprakhyamālikhantamivāmbaram ,
dhriyamāṇamivākāśamucchritairbhavanottamaiḥ.
23. dvāram uttaram āsādya cintayāmāsa
vānaraḥ kailāsaśikharaprakhyam
ālikhantam iva ambaram dhriyamāṇam iva
ākāśam ucchritaiḥ bhavanottamaiḥ

23. Having approached the northern gate, the monkey (vānara) pondered. The city's structures resembled the peak of Kailāsa, as if scraping the sky, and the sky itself appeared to be supported by the lofty, excellent buildings.
तस्याश्च महतीं गुप्तिं सागरं च निरीक्ष्य सः ।
रावणं च रिपुं घोरं चिन्तयामास वानरः ॥२४॥
24. tasyāśca mahatīṃ guptiṃ sāgaraṃ ca nirīkṣya saḥ ,
rāvaṇaṃ ca ripuṃ ghoraṃ cintayāmāsa vānaraḥ.
24. tasyāḥ ca mahatīm guptim sāgaram ca nirīkṣya
saḥ rāvaṇam ca ripum ghoram cintayāmāsa vānaraḥ
24. saḥ vānaraḥ tasyāḥ mahatīm guptim ca sāgaram ca
nirīkṣya ghoram ripum rāvaṇam ca cintayāmāsa
24. And having observed its great defenses and the ocean, the monkey (vānara) also pondered about Rāvaṇa, the dreadful enemy.
आगत्यापीह हरयो भविष्यन्ति निरर्थकाः ।
न हि युद्धेन वै लङ्का शक्या जेतुं सुरैरपि ॥२५॥
25. āgatyāpīha harayo bhaviṣyanti nirarthakāḥ ,
na hi yuddhena vai laṅkā śakyā jetuṃ surairapi.
25. āgatya api iha harayaḥ bhaviṣyanti nirarthakāḥ
na hi yuddhena vai laṅkā śakyā jetum suraiḥ api
25. āgatya api iha harayaḥ nirarthakāḥ bhaviṣyanti
hi yuddhena vai laṅkā suraiḥ api jetum na śakyā
25. Even if monkeys come here, they will become useless, for Lanka cannot truly be conquered by battle, not even by the gods.
इमां तु विषमां दुर्गां लङ्कां रावणपालिताम् ।
प्राप्यापि स महाबाहुः किं करिष्यति राघवः ॥२६॥
26. imāṃ tu viṣamāṃ durgāṃ laṅkāṃ rāvaṇapālitām ,
prāpyāpi sa mahābāhuḥ kiṃ kariṣyati rāghavaḥ.
26. imām tu viṣamām durgām laṅkām rāvaṇapālitām
prāpya api saḥ mahābāhuḥ kim kariṣyati rāghavaḥ
26. tu saḥ mahābāhuḥ rāghavaḥ imām viṣamām durgām
rāvaṇapālitām laṅkām prāpya api kim kariṣyati
26. But even having reached this difficult, formidable Lanka, which is protected by Ravana, what will that mighty-armed descendant of Raghu (rāghava) be able to accomplish?
अवकाशो न सान्त्वस्य राक्षसेष्वभिगम्यते ।
न दानस्य न भेदस्य नैव युद्धस्य दृश्यते ॥२७॥
27. avakāśo na sāntvasya rākṣaseṣvabhigamyate ,
na dānasya na bhedasya naiva yuddhasya dṛśyate.
27. avakāśaḥ na sāntvasya rākṣaseṣu abhigamyate na
dānasya na bhedasya na eva yuddhasya dṛśyate
27. rākṣaseṣu sāntvasya avakāśaḥ na abhigamyate
dānasya na bhedasya na eva yuddhasya na dṛśyate
27. No opportunity for conciliation is found among the demons (rākṣasas). Nor is any room seen for generous offerings, for sowing discord, nor indeed for battle.
चतुर्णामेव हि गतिर्वानराणां महात्मनाम् ।
वालिपुत्रस्य नीलस्य मम राज्ञश्च धीमतः ॥२८॥
28. caturṇāmeva hi gatirvānarāṇāṃ mahātmanām ,
vāliputrasya nīlasya mama rājñaśca dhīmataḥ.
28. caturṇām eva hi gatiḥ vānarāṇām mahātmanām
vāliputrasya nīlasya mama rājñaḥ ca dhīmataḥ
28. hi vānarāṇām mahātmanām caturṇām eva gatiḥ

28. Indeed, only four of the great-souled monkeys have the ability to penetrate Lanka: Vali's son (Angada), Nila, my king (Sugriva), and I, the intelligent one.
यावज्जानामि वैदेहीं यदि जीवति वा न वा ।
तत्रैव चिन्तयिष्यामि दृष्ट्वा तां जनकात्मजाम् ॥२९॥
29. yāvajjānāmi vaidehīṃ yadi jīvati vā na vā ,
tatraiva cintayiṣyāmi dṛṣṭvā tāṃ janakātmajām.
29. yāvat jānāmi vaidehīm yadi jīvati vā na vā
tatra eva cintayiṣyāmi dṛṣṭvā tām janakātmajām
29. yāvat vaidehīm jīvati vā na vā yadi jānāmi
tām janakātmajām dṛṣṭvā tatra eva cintayiṣyāmi
29. Until I know whether Vaidehi is alive or not, I will deliberate there only after seeing that daughter of Janaka.
ततः स चिन्तयामास मुहूर्तं कपिकुञ्जरः ।
गिरिशृङ्गे स्थितस्तस्मिन् रामस्याभ्युदये रतः ॥३०॥
30. tataḥ sa cintayāmāsa muhūrtaṃ kapikuñjaraḥ ,
giriśṛṅge sthitastasmin rāmasyābhyudaye rataḥ.

giriśṛṅge sthitaḥ tasmin rāmasya abhyudaye rataḥ
30. tataḥ saḥ rāmasya abhyudaye rataḥ kapikuñjaraḥ
tasmin giriśṛṅge sthitaḥ muhūrtam cintayāmāsa
30. Then that excellent monkey (Hanuman), standing on that mountain peak, devoted to Rama's welfare, pondered for a moment.
अनेन रूपेण मया न शक्या रक्षसां पुरी ।
प्रवेष्टुं राक्षसैर्गुप्ता क्रूरैर्बलसमन्वितैः ॥३१॥
31. anena rūpeṇa mayā na śakyā rakṣasāṃ purī ,
praveṣṭuṃ rākṣasairguptā krūrairbalasamanvitaiḥ.

praveṣṭum rākṣasaiḥ guptā krūraiḥ balasamanvitaiḥ

31. By means of this form, it is not possible for me to enter the city of the rākṣasas, which is guarded by cruel rākṣasas who are endowed with great strength.
उग्रौजसो महावीर्यो बलवन्तश्च राक्षसाः ।
वञ्चनीया मया सर्वे जानकीं परिमार्गिता ॥३२॥
32. ugraujaso mahāvīryo balavantaśca rākṣasāḥ ,
vañcanīyā mayā sarve jānakīṃ parimārgitā.
32. ugraojasaḥ mahāvīryāḥ balavantaḥ ca rākṣasāḥ
vañcanīyā mayā sarve jānakīm parimārgitā
32. ugraojasaḥ mahāvīryāḥ ca balavantaḥ rākṣasāḥ
sarve mayā jānakīm parimārgitā vañcanīyā
32. The rākṣasas possess fierce prowess, great valor, and strength. All of them must be outwitted by me during the search for Janaki.
लक्ष्यालक्ष्येण रूपेण रात्रौ लङ्का पुरी मया ।
प्रवेष्टुं प्राप्तकालं मे कृत्यं साधयितुं महत् ॥३३॥
33. lakṣyālakṣyeṇa rūpeṇa rātrau laṅkā purī mayā ,
praveṣṭuṃ prāptakālaṃ me kṛtyaṃ sādhayituṃ mahat.
33. lakṣyālakṣyeṇa rūpeṇa rātrau laṅkā purī mayā |
praveṣṭum prāptakālam me kṛtyam sādhayitum mahat
33. mayā rātrau lakṣyālakṣyeṇa rūpeṇa laṅkā purī
praveṣṭum me mahat kṛtyam sādhayitum prāptakālam
33. It is the opportune moment for me to enter the city of Laṅkā at night in a form that is both visible and invisible, and to accomplish my great task.
तां पुरीं तादृशीं दृष्ट्वा दुराधर्षां सुरासुरैः ।
हनूमांश्चिन्तयामास विनिःश्वस्य मुहुर्मुहुः ॥३४॥
34. tāṃ purīṃ tādṛśīṃ dṛṣṭvā durādharṣāṃ surāsuraiḥ ,
hanūmāṃścintayāmāsa viniḥśvasya muhurmuhuḥ.
34. tām purīm tādṛśīm dṛṣṭvā durādharṣām surāsuraiḥ
| hanūmān cintayāmāsa viniḥśvasya muhurmuhuḥ

34. Having seen that city, so formidable and impregnable even by gods and demons, Hanumān sighed repeatedly and began to ponder.
केनोपायेन पश्येयं मैथिलीं जनकात्मजाम् ।
अदृष्टो राक्षसेन्द्रेण रावणेन दुरात्मना ॥३५॥
35. kenopāyena paśyeyaṃ maithilīṃ janakātmajām ,
adṛṣṭo rākṣasendreṇa rāvaṇena durātmanā.
35. kena upāyena paśyeyam maithilīm janakātmajām
| adṛṣṭaḥ rākṣasendreṇa rāvaṇena durātmanā
35. adṛṣṭaḥ kena upāyena rākṣasendreṇa durātmanā
rāvaṇena maithilīm janakātmajām paśyeyam?
35. By what means can I see Maithilī, Janaka's daughter, while remaining unseen by Rāvaṇa, the wicked-souled (durātman) lord of rākṣasas?
न विनश्येत् कथं कार्यं रामस्य विदितात्मनः ।
एकामेकश्च पश्येयं रहिते जनकात्मजाम् ॥३६॥
36. na vinaśyet kathaṃ kāryaṃ rāmasya viditātmanaḥ ,
ekāmekaśca paśyeyaṃ rahite janakātmajām.
36. na vinaśyet katham kāryam rāmasya viditātmanaḥ
| ekām ekaḥ ca paśyeyam rahite janakātmajām
36. katham rāmasya viditātmanaḥ kāryam na vinaśyet?
ekaḥ ca rahite ekām janakātmajām paśyeyam
36. How can Rāma's mission, belonging to the one whose true nature (ātman) is understood, not be ruined? And how can I, alone, see Janaka's daughter, who is all alone, in a secluded spot?
भूताश्चार्थो विपद्यन्ते देशकालविरोधिताः ।
विक्लवं दूतमासाद्य तमः सूर्योदये यथा ॥३७॥
37. bhūtāścārtho vipadyante deśakālavirodhitāḥ ,
viklavaṃ dūtamāsādya tamaḥ sūryodaye yathā.
37. bhūtāḥ ca arthāḥ vipadyante deśa-kāla-virodhitāḥ
viklavaṃ dūtam āsādya tamaḥ sūrya-udaye yathā
37. bhūtāḥ arthāḥ deśa-kāla-virodhitāḥ vipadyante ca
viklavaṃ dūtam āsādya tamaḥ sūrya-udaye yathā
37. Even accomplished matters are ruined if they are contrary to the proper place and time, or if one relies on a bewildered messenger, just as darkness disappears at sunrise.
अर्थानर्थान्तरे बुद्धिर्निश्चितापि न शोभते ।
घातयन्ति हि कार्याणि दूताः पण्डितमानिनः ॥३८॥
38. arthānarthāntare buddhirniścitāpi na śobhate ,
ghātayanti hi kāryāṇi dūtāḥ paṇḍitamāninaḥ.
38. artha-anartha-antare buddhiḥ niścitā api na
śobhate ghātayanti hi kāryāṇi dūtāḥ paṇḍita-māninaḥ
38. artha-anartha-antare niścitā api buddhiḥ na
śobhate hi paṇḍita-māninaḥ dūtāḥ kāryāṇi ghātayanti
38. Even a well-considered judgment regarding advantage and disadvantage does not appear effective. Indeed, messengers who merely fancy themselves wise cause undertakings to be ruined.
न विनश्येत् कथं कार्यं वैक्लव्यं न कथं भवेत् ।
लङ्घनं च समुद्रस्य कथं नु न वृथा भवेत् ॥३९॥
39. na vinaśyet kathaṃ kāryaṃ vaiklavyaṃ na kathaṃ bhavet ,
laṅghanaṃ ca samudrasya kathaṃ nu na vṛthā bhavet.
39. na vinaśyet kathaṃ kāryaṃ vaiklavyam na kathaṃ bhavet
laṅghanaṃ ca samudrasya kathaṃ nu na vṛthā bhavet
39. kāryaṃ kathaṃ na vinaśyet kathaṃ ca vaiklavyam na
bhavet samudrasya laṅghanaṃ kathaṃ nu na vṛthā bhavet
39. How can this undertaking not be ruined? How can there be no agitation? And how, indeed, can the crossing of the ocean not become futile?
मयि दृष्टे तु रक्षोभी रामस्य विदितात्मनः ।
भवेद्व्यर्थमिदं कार्यं रावणानर्थमिच्छतः ॥४०॥
40. mayi dṛṣṭe tu rakṣobhī rāmasya viditātmanaḥ ,
bhavedvyarthamidaṃ kāryaṃ rāvaṇānarthamicchataḥ.
40. mayi dṛṣṭe tu rakṣobhiḥ rāmasya vidita-ātmanaḥ
bhavet vyartham idam kāryaṃ rāvaṇa-anartham icchataḥ
40. tu mayi dṛṣṭe rakṣobhiḥ rāvaṇa-anartham icchataḥ
vidita-ātmanaḥ rāmasya idam kāryaṃ vyartham bhavet
40. But if I were seen by the Rākṣasas, this mission for (Lord) Rāma, the wise (viditātman) one who desires Rāvaṇa's ruin, would become futile.
न हि शक्यं क्व चित् स्थातुमविज्ञातेन राक्षसैः ।
अपि राक्षसरूपेण किमुतान्येन केन चित् ॥४१॥
41. na hi śakyaṃ kva cit sthātumavijñātena rākṣasaiḥ ,
api rākṣasarūpeṇa kimutānyena kena cit.
41. na hi śakyam kva cit sthātum avijñātena rākṣasaiḥ
api rākṣasarūpeṇa kim uta anyena kena cit
41. na hi kva cit avijñātena rākṣasaiḥ sthātum
śakyam api rākṣasarūpeṇa kim uta anyena kena cit
41. It is surely not possible to remain anywhere without being detected by the rākṣasas. If it is difficult even in the guise of a rākṣasa, how much more so would it be in any other form?
वायुरप्यत्र नाज्ञातश्चरेदिति मतिर्मम ।
न ह्यस्त्यविदितं किं चिद् राक्षसानां बलीयसाम् ॥४२॥
42. vāyurapyatra nājñātaścarediti matirmama ,
na hyastyaviditaṃ kiṃ cid rākṣasānāṃ balīyasām.
42. vāyuḥ api atra na ajñātaḥ caret iti matiḥ mama
na hi asti aviditam kim cit rākṣasānām balīyasām
42. mama matiḥ iti (yad) vāyuḥ api atra ajñātaḥ na caret
hi balīyasām rākṣasānām kim cit aviditam na asti
42. My belief is that even the wind god (Vāyu) would not move about here without being detected. For there is truly nothing that remains unknown to the powerful rākṣasas.
इहाहं यदि तिष्ठामि स्वेन रूपेण संवृतः ।
विनाशमुपयास्यामि भर्तुरर्थश्च हीयते ॥४३॥
43. ihāhaṃ yadi tiṣṭhāmi svena rūpeṇa saṃvṛtaḥ ,
vināśamupayāsyāmi bharturarthaśca hīyate.
43. iha aham yadi tiṣṭhāmi svena rūpeṇa saṃvṛtaḥ
vināśam upayāsyāmi bhartuḥ arthaḥ ca hīyate
43. yadi aham iha svena rūpeṇa saṃvṛtaḥ tiṣṭhāmi
(tarhi) vināśam upayāsyāmi ca bhartuḥ arthaḥ hīyate
43. If I remain here, fully in my own (true) form, I will certainly meet my destruction, and my master's purpose will be hindered.
तदहं स्वेन रूपेण रजन्यां ह्रस्वतां गतः ।
लङ्कामभिपतिष्यामि राघवस्यार्थसिद्धये ॥४४॥
44. tadahaṃ svena rūpeṇa rajanyāṃ hrasvatāṃ gataḥ ,
laṅkāmabhipatiṣyāmi rāghavasyārthasiddhaye.
44. tat aham svena rūpeṇa rajanyām hrasvatām gataḥ
laṅkām abhipatiṣyāmi rāghavasya artha siddhaye
44. tat aham rajanyām svena rūpeṇa hrasvatām gataḥ
rāghavasya artha siddhaye laṅkām abhipatiṣyāmi
44. Therefore, having assumed a tiny form at night, I will fly down to Laṅkā for the success of Rāghava's mission.
रावणस्य पुरीं रात्रौ प्रविश्य सुदुरासदाम् ।
विचिन्वन्भवनं सर्वं द्रक्ष्यामि जनकात्मजाम् ॥४५॥
45. rāvaṇasya purīṃ rātrau praviśya sudurāsadām ,
vicinvanbhavanaṃ sarvaṃ drakṣyāmi janakātmajām.
45. rāvaṇasya purīm rātrau praviśya sudurāsadām
vicinvan bhavanam sarvam drakṣyāmi janakātmajām
45. rātrau sudurāsadām rāvaṇasya purīm praviśya,

45. Having entered Rāvaṇa's city at night, which is very difficult to access, and searching all its palaces, I will see Janaka's daughter.
इति संचिन्त्य हनुमान् सूर्यस्यास्तमयं कपिः ।
आचकाङ्क्षे तदा वीरा वैदेह्या दर्शनोत्सुकः ।
पृषदंशकमात्रः सन्बभूवाद्भुतदर्शनः ॥४६॥
46. iti saṃcintya hanumān sūryasyāstamayaṃ kapiḥ ,
ācakāṅkṣe tadā vīrā vaidehyā darśanotsukaḥ ,
pṛṣadaṃśakamātraḥ sanbabhūvādbhutadarśanaḥ.
46. iti saṃcintya hanumān sūryasya
astamayam kapiḥ ācakāṅkṣe tadā vīraḥ
vaidehyā darśanotsukaḥ pṛṣadaṃśakamātraḥ
san babhūva adbhutadarśanaḥ
46. iti saṃcintya,
tadā hanumān vīraḥ kapiḥ sūryasya astamayam vaidehyā darśanotsukaḥ ācakāṅkṣe.
pṛṣadaṃśakamātraḥ san adbhutadarśanaḥ babhūva.
46. Having thus reflected, Hanumān, the valiant monkey, then eagerly awaited the sunset, longing to see Vaidehī. Having assumed a size no bigger than a cat, he became wondrous to behold.
प्रदोषकाले हनुमांस्तूर्णमुत्पत्य वीर्यवान् ।
प्रविवेश पुरीं रम्यां सुविभक्तमहापथम् ॥४७॥
47. pradoṣakāle hanumāṃstūrṇamutpatya vīryavān ,
praviveśa purīṃ ramyāṃ suvibhaktamahāpatham.
47. pradoṣakāle hanumān tūrṇam utpatya vīryavān
praviveśa purīm ramyām suvibhaktamahāpathām
47. pradoṣakāle vīryavān hanumān tūrṇam utpatya,

47. At twilight, the mighty Hanumān swiftly flew up and entered the charming city with its well-divided grand highways.
प्रासादमालाविततां स्तम्भैः काञ्चनराजतैः ।
शातकुम्भमयैर्जालैर्गन्धर्वनगरोपमाम् ॥४८॥
48. prāsādamālāvitatāṃ stambhaiḥ kāñcanarājataiḥ ,
śātakumbhamayairjālairgandharvanagaropamām.
48. prāsādamālāvitatām stambhaiḥ kāñcanarājataiḥ
śātakumbhamayaiḥ jālaiḥ gandharvanagaropamām
48. prāsādamālāvitatām,
kāñcanarājataiḥ stambhaiḥ,

gandharvanagaropamām (purīm praviveśa).
48. (He entered a city) extended with rows of palaces, having pillars of gold and silver, and windows made of pure gold, resembling a city of the Gandharvas.
सप्तभौमाष्टभौमैश्च स ददर्श महापुरीम् ।
तलैः स्फाटिकसंपूर्णैः कार्तस्वरविभूषितैः ॥४९॥
49. saptabhaumāṣṭabhaumaiśca sa dadarśa mahāpurīm ,
talaiḥ sphāṭikasaṃpūrṇaiḥ kārtasvaravibhūṣitaiḥ.
49. sapta-bhauma-aṣṭa-bhaumaiḥ ca sa dadarśa mahāpurīm
talaiḥ sphāṭika-sampūrṇaiḥ kārtasvara-vibhūṣitaiḥ
49. sa sapta-bhauma-aṣṭa-bhaumaiḥ sphāṭika-sampūrṇaiḥ
kārtasvara-vibhūṣitaiḥ talaiḥ mahāpurīm ca dadarśa
49. He saw the great city with its seven-storied and eight-storied buildings, whose floors were filled with crystal and adorned with gold.
वैदूर्यमणिचित्रैश्च मुक्ताजालविभूषितैः ।
तलैः शुशुभिरे तानि भवनान्यत्र रक्षसाम् ॥५०॥
50. vaidūryamaṇicitraiśca muktājālavibhūṣitaiḥ ,
talaiḥ śuśubhire tāni bhavanānyatra rakṣasām.
50. vaidūrya-maṇi-citraiḥ ca muktājāla-vibhūṣitaiḥ
talaiḥ śuśubhire tāni bhavanāni atra rakṣasām
50. atra rakṣasām tāni bhavanāni vaidūrya-maṇi-citraiḥ
ca muktājāla-vibhūṣitaiḥ talaiḥ śuśubhire
50. Those buildings of the (rākṣasas) demons there shone with floors variegated with lapis lazuli gems and adorned with nets of pearls.
काञ्चनानि विचित्राणि तोरणानि च रक्षसाम् ।
लङ्कामुद्द्योतयामासुः सर्वतः समलंकृताम् ॥५१॥
51. kāñcanāni vicitrāṇi toraṇāni ca rakṣasām ,
laṅkāmuddyotayāmāsuḥ sarvataḥ samalaṃkṛtām.
51. kāñcanāni vicitrāṇi toraṇāni ca rakṣasām
laṅkām uddyotayām āsuḥ sarvataḥ samalaṅkṛtām

51. The golden and splendid arched gateways of the (rākṣasas) demons illuminated Lanka, which was thoroughly adorned on all sides.
अचिन्त्यामद्भुताकारां दृष्ट्वा लङ्कां महाकपिः ।
आसीद्विषण्णो हृष्टश्च वैदेह्या दर्शनोत्सुकः ॥५२॥
52. acintyāmadbhutākārāṃ dṛṣṭvā laṅkāṃ mahākapiḥ ,
āsīdviṣaṇṇo hṛṣṭaśca vaidehyā darśanotsukaḥ.
52. acintyām adbhutākārām dṛṣṭvā laṅkām mahākapiḥ
āsīt viṣaṇṇaḥ hṛṣṭaḥ ca vaidehyā darśanotsukaḥ

52. Having seen Lanka, which was inconceivable and of wondrous form, the great monkey (mahākapi) was dejected and joyful, eager for the sight of Vaidehi (Sītā).
स पाण्डुरोद्विद्धविमानमालिनीं महार्हजाम्बूनदजालतोरणाम् ।
यशस्विनां रावणबाहुपालितां क्षपाचरैर्भीमबलैः समावृताम् ॥५३॥
53. sa pāṇḍurodviddhavimānamālinīṃ mahārhajāmbūnadajālatoraṇām ,
yaśasvināṃ rāvaṇabāhupālitāṃ kṣapācarairbhīmabalaiḥ samāvṛtām.

53. He (Hanuman) saw that [city], garlanded with white, towering palaces, having arched gateways of precious golden lattice-work, protected by the arms of the glorious Rāvaṇa, and surrounded by night-roaming rākṣasas of formidable strength.
चन्द्रो ऽपि साचिव्यमिवास्य कुर्वंस्तारागणैर्मध्यगतो विराजन् ।
ज्योत्स्नावितानेन वितत्य लोकमुत्तिष्ठते नैकसहस्ररश्मिः ॥५४॥
54. candro'pi sācivyamivāsya kurvaṃstārāgaṇairmadhyagato virājan ,
jyotsnāvitānena vitatya lokamuttiṣṭhate naikasahasraraśmiḥ.
54. candraḥ api sācivyam iva asya
kurvan tārāgaṇaiḥ madhyagataḥ
virājan jyotsnāvitānena vitatya
lokam uttiṣṭhate naikasahasraraśmiḥ

54. The moon also, shining amidst the clusters of stars and as if rendering assistance to him (Rāvaṇa), rose, spreading its canopy of moonlight over the world with its many thousands of rays.
शङ्खप्रभं क्षीरमृणालवर्णमुद्गच्छमानं व्यवभासमानम् ।
ददर्श चन्द्रं स कपिप्रवीरः पोप्लूयमानं सरसीव हंसं ॥५५॥
55. śaṅkhaprabhaṃ kṣīramṛṇālavarṇamudgacchamānaṃ vyavabhāsamānam ,
dadarśa candraṃ sa kapipravīraḥ poplūyamānaṃ sarasīva haṃsaṃ.
55. śaṅkhaprabham kṣīramṛṇālavarṇam
udgacchamānam vyavabhāsamānam
dadarśa candram saḥ kapipravīraḥ
poplūyamānam sarasi iva haṃsam

55. That foremost of monkeys, Hanuman, saw the moon, which was lustrous like a conch and the color of milk and lotus stems, rising and shining brightly. He saw it as a swan floating in a lake.
