तस्यां रजन्यां व्युष्टायां यज्ञवाटगतो नृपः ।
ऋषीन् सर्वान्महातेजाः शब्दापयति राघवः ॥१॥

1. When that night dawned, the highly effulgent King Rāghava, having arrived at the enclosure for the Vedic ritual (yajña), summoned all the sages.

विश्वामित्रो दीर्घतपा दुर्वासाश्च महातपाः ॥२॥
2. vasiṣṭho vāmadevaśca jābāliratha kāśyapaḥ ,
viśvāmitro dīrghatapā durvāsāśca mahātapāḥ.

2. Vasiṣṭha and Vāmadeva, Jābāli, and then Kāśyapa; Viśvāmitra, known for his long ascetic practice (tapas), and Durvāsas, distinguished by his great ascetic practice (tapas).
अगस्त्यो ऽथ तथाशक्तिर्भार्गवश्चैव वामनः ।
मार्कण्डेयश्च दीर्घायुर्मौद्गल्यश्च महातपाः ॥३॥
3. agastyo'tha tathāśaktirbhārgavaścaiva vāmanaḥ ,
mārkaṇḍeyaśca dīrghāyurmaudgalyaśca mahātapāḥ.
3. agastyaḥ atha tathā śaktiḥ bhārgavaḥ ca eva vāmanaḥ
mārkaṇḍeyaḥ ca dīrghāyuḥ maudgalyaḥ ca mahātapāḥ

3. Agastya, and then similarly Śakti, and also Bhārgava and Vāmana; Mārkaṇḍeya, who is long-lived, and Maudgalya, distinguished by his great ascetic practice (tapas).
भार्गवश्च्यवनश्चैव शतानन्दश्च धर्मवित् ।
भरद्वाजश्च तेजस्वी अग्निपुत्रश्च सुप्रभः ॥४॥
4. bhārgavaścyavanaścaiva śatānandaśca dharmavit ,
bharadvājaśca tejasvī agniputraśca suprabhaḥ.

4. Bhārgava and Cyavana, and Śatānanda, who is knowledgeable in natural law (dharma); Bharadvāja, who is splendid, and Agniputra, who is very lustrous.
एते चान्ये च मुनयो बहवः संशितव्रताः ।
राजानश्च नरव्याघ्राः सर्व एव समागताः ॥५॥
5. ete cānye ca munayo bahavaḥ saṃśitavratāḥ ,
rājānaśca naravyāghrāḥ sarva eva samāgatāḥ.
5. ete ca anye ca munayaḥ bahavaḥ saṃśitavratāḥ
rājānaḥ ca naravyāghrāḥ sarve eva samāgatāḥ

5. These and many other ascetics (muni) with firm vows, as well as kings who are like tigers among men, have all assembled.
राक्षसाश्च महावीर्या वानराश्च महाबलाः ।
समाजग्मुर्महात्मानः सर्व एव कुतूहलात् ॥६॥
6. rākṣasāśca mahāvīryā vānarāśca mahābalāḥ ,
samājagmurmahātmānaḥ sarva eva kutūhalāt.

samājagmuḥ mahātmānaḥ sarve eva kutūhalāt

6. Demons (rākṣasa) of great valor, and monkeys (vānara) of great strength, all noble beings, assembled purely out of curiosity.
क्षत्रियाश्चैव वैश्याश्च शूद्राश्चैव सहस्रशः ।
सीताशपथवीक्षार्थं सर्व एव समागताः ॥७॥
7. kṣatriyāścaiva vaiśyāśca śūdrāścaiva sahasraśaḥ ,
sītāśapathavīkṣārthaṃ sarva eva samāgatāḥ.
7. kṣatriyāḥ ca eva vaiśyāḥ ca śūdrāḥ ca eva sahasraśaḥ
sītāśapathavīkṣārthaṃ sarve eva samāgatāḥ

7. Kshatriyas, Vaishyas, and Shudras, indeed by the thousands, have all assembled to witness Sītā's oath.
तथा समागतं सर्वमश्वभूतमिवाचलम् ।
श्रुत्वा मुनिवरस्तूर्णं ससीतः समुपागमत् ॥८॥
8. tathā samāgataṃ sarvamaśvabhūtamivācalam ,
śrutvā munivarastūrṇaṃ sasītaḥ samupāgamat.
8. tathā samāgataṃ sarvam aśvabhūtam iva acalam
śrutvā munivaraḥ tūrṇaṃ sasītaḥ samupāgamat
8. tathā aśvabhūtam iva acalam sarvam samāgatam

8. Having heard that everyone had thus assembled, like a vast, unmoving mass, the best of sages (muni), accompanied by Sītā, quickly arrived.
तमृषिं पृष्ठतः सीता सान्वगच्छदवाङ्मुखी ।
कृताञ्जलिर्बाष्पगला कृत्वा रामं मनोगतम् ॥९॥
9. tamṛṣiṃ pṛṣṭhataḥ sītā sānvagacchadavāṅmukhī ,
kṛtāñjalirbāṣpagalā kṛtvā rāmaṃ manogatam.
9. tam ṛṣim pṛṣṭhataḥ sītā sā anvagacchat avāṅmukhī
kṛtāñjaliḥ bāṣpagalā kṛtvā rāmam manogatam
9. sītā avāṅmukhī kṛtāñjaliḥ bāṣpagalā rāmam
manogatam kṛtvā tam ṛṣim pṛṣṭhataḥ sā anvagacchat
9. Sita followed that sage from behind, her face turned downwards, her palms joined, her throat choked with tears, as she kept Rama in her thoughts.
तां दृष्ट्वा श्रीमिवायान्तीं ब्रह्माणमनुगामिनीम् ।
वाल्मीकेः पृष्ठतः सीतां साधुकारो महानभूत् ॥१०॥
10. tāṃ dṛṣṭvā śrīmivāyāntīṃ brahmāṇamanugāminīm ,
vālmīkeḥ pṛṣṭhataḥ sītāṃ sādhukāro mahānabhūt.
10. tām dṛṣṭvā śrīm iva āyāntīm brahmāṇam anugāminīm
vālmīkeḥ pṛṣṭhataḥ sītām sādhukāraḥ mahān abhūt
10. vālmīkeḥ pṛṣṭhataḥ brahmāṇam anugāminīm śrīm iva
āyāntīm tām sītām dṛṣṭvā mahān sādhukāraḥ abhūt
10. When Sita was seen, following behind Valmiki like the goddess Shri (Lakshmi) accompanying Brahma (brahman), a great shout of "Excellent!" arose.
ततो हलहला शब्दः सर्वेषामेवमाबभौ ।
दुःखजेन विशालेन शोकेनाकुलितात्मनाम् ॥११॥
11. tato halahalā śabdaḥ sarveṣāmevamābabhau ,
duḥkhajena viśālena śokenākulitātmanām.
11. tataḥ halahalā śabdaḥ sarveṣām evam ābabhau
duḥkhajena viśālena śokena ākulitātmanām
11. tataḥ duḥkhajena viśālena śokena ākulitātmanām
sarveṣām halahalā śabdaḥ evam ābabhau
11. Then, a tumultuous "halahala" sound clearly arose from everyone whose souls (ātman) were agitated by a vast sorrow born of their suffering.
साधु सीतेति के चित्तु साधु रामेति चापरे ।
उभावेव तु तत्रान्ये साधु साध्विति चाब्रुवन् ॥१२॥
12. sādhu sīteti ke cittu sādhu rāmeti cāpare ,
ubhāveva tu tatrānye sādhu sādhviti cābruvan.
12. sādhu sīte iti ke cit tu sādhu rāme iti ca apare
ubhau eva tu tatra anye sādhu sādhu iti ca abruvan
12. ke cit tu sādhu sīte iti apare ca sādhu rāme iti
tatra anye tu ubhau eva sādhu sādhu iti ca abruvan
12. Some exclaimed, "Excellent, Sita!" Others cried, "Excellent, Rama!" And still others there praised both, saying, "Excellent, excellent!"
ततो मध्यं जनौघानां प्रविश्य मुनिपुंगवः ।
सीतासहायो वाल्मीकिरिति होवाच राघवम् ॥१३॥
13. tato madhyaṃ janaughānāṃ praviśya munipuṃgavaḥ ,
sītāsahāyo vālmīkiriti hovāca rāghavam.
13. tataḥ madhyam jana-oghānām praviśya muni-puṅgavaḥ
sītā-sahāyaḥ vālmīkiḥ iti hovāca rāghavam
13. tataḥ muni-puṅgavaḥ vālmīkiḥ sītā-sahāyaḥ
jana-oghānām madhyam praviśya rāghavam iti hovāca
13. Then, having entered the midst of the multitudes of people, the chief of sages, Vālmīki, accompanied by Sītā, spoke thus to Rāma.
इयं दाशरथे सीता सुव्रता धर्मचारिणी ।
अपापा ते परित्यक्ता ममाश्रमसमीपतः ॥१४॥
14. iyaṃ dāśarathe sītā suvratā dharmacāriṇī ,
apāpā te parityaktā mamāśramasamīpataḥ.
14. iyam dāśarathe sītā su-vratā dharma-cāriṇī
apāpā te parityaktā mama āśrama-samīpataḥ
14. dāśarathe iyam sītā su-vratā dharma-cāriṇī
apāpā te mama āśrama-samīpataḥ parityaktā
14. O son of Daśaratha, this Sītā, who observes excellent vows and practices righteousness (dharma), was abandoned by you, though sinless, near my hermitage.
लोकापवादभीतस्य तव राम महाव्रत ।
प्रत्ययं दास्यते सीता तामनुज्ञातुमर्हसि ॥१५॥
15. lokāpavādabhītasya tava rāma mahāvrata ,
pratyayaṃ dāsyate sītā tāmanujñātumarhasi.
15. loka-apavāda-bhītasya tava rāma mahā-vrata
pratyayam dāsyate sītā tām anujñātum arhasi
15. rāma mahā-vrata loka-apavāda-bhītasya tava
sītā pratyayam dāsyate tām anujñātum arhasi
15. O Rāma, O great vow-keeper, Sītā will provide proof for you, who were afraid of public censure. You should allow her (to do so).
इमौ च जानकी पुत्राव् उभौ च यमजातकौ ।
सुतौ तवैव दुर्धर्षो सत्यमेतद्ब्रवीमि ते ॥१६॥
16. imau ca jānakī putrāv ubhau ca yamajātakau ,
sutau tavaiva durdharṣo satyametadbravīmi te.
16. imau ca jānakī-putrau ubhau ca yama-jātakau
sutau tava eva dur-dharṣau satyam etat bravīmi te
16. ca imau ubhau ca yama-jātakau jānakī-putrau
sutau tava eva dur-dharṣau te satyam etat bravīmi
16. And these two sons of Jānakī, both twins, are indeed your formidable sons. I tell you this truth.
प्रचेतसो ऽहं दशमः पुत्रो राघवनन्दन ।
न स्मराम्यनृतं वाक्यं तथेमौ तव पुत्रकौ ॥१७॥
17. pracetaso'haṃ daśamaḥ putro rāghavanandana ,
na smarāmyanṛtaṃ vākyaṃ tathemau tava putrakau.
17. pracetasaḥ aham daśamaḥ putraḥ rāghavanandana na
smarāmi anṛtam vākyam tathā imau tava putrakau
17. rāghavanandana aham pracetasaḥ daśamaḥ putraḥ na
anṛtam vākyam smarāmi tathā imau tava putrakau
17. O Rama, scion of Raghu, I am the tenth son of Pracetas. I never utter an untruthful statement, and likewise, these two are indeed your sons.
बहुवर्षसहस्राणि तपश्चर्या मया कृता ।
तस्याः फलमुपाश्नीयामपापा मैथिली यथा ॥१८॥
18. bahuvarṣasahasrāṇi tapaścaryā mayā kṛtā ,
tasyāḥ phalamupāśnīyāmapāpā maithilī yathā.
18. bahuvarṣasahastrāṇi tapaścaryā mayā kṛtā
tasyāḥ phalam upāśnīyām apāpā maithilī yathā
18. mayā bahuvarṣasahastrāṇi tapaścaryā kṛtā.
(aham) tasyāḥ phalam upāśnīyām yathā apāpā maithilī (upāśnīyāt)
18. May I enjoy the fruit of the spiritual practices (tapas) I have performed for many thousands of years, just as the blameless daughter of Mithila (Maithilī) does.
अहं पञ्चसु भूतेषु मनःषष्ठेषु राघव ।
विचिन्त्य सीतां शुद्धेति न्यगृह्णां वननिर्झरे ॥१९॥
19. ahaṃ pañcasu bhūteṣu manaḥṣaṣṭheṣu rāghava ,
vicintya sītāṃ śuddheti nyagṛhṇāṃ vananirjhare.
19. aham pañcasu bhūteṣu manaḥṣaṣṭheṣu rāghava
vicintya sītām śuddhā iti nyagṛhṇām vananirjhare
19. rāghava aham pañcasu manaḥṣaṣṭheṣu bhūteṣu
sītām śuddhā iti vicintya vananirjhare nyagṛhṇām
19. O scion of Raghu, having considered Sita pure in all five elements, with the mind as the sixth, I accepted her into my hermitage by the forest stream.
इयं शुद्धसमाचारा अपापा पतिदेवता ।
लोकापवादभीतस्य दास्यति प्रत्ययं तव ॥२०॥
20. iyaṃ śuddhasamācārā apāpā patidevatā ,
lokāpavādabhītasya dāsyati pratyayaṃ tava.
20. iyam śuddhasamācārā apāpā patidevatā
lokāpavādabhītasyā dāsyati pratyayam tava
20. iyam śuddhasamācārā apāpā patidevatā (sītā)
lokāpavādabhītasyā tava pratyayam dāsyati
20. This woman is pure in conduct, blameless, and devoted to her husband as a deity (patidevatā). She will provide conviction to you who are fearful of public criticism.
