आचचक्षे ऽथ सद्भावं लक्ष्मणस्य महात्मनः ।
भरतायाप्रमेयाय गुहो गहनगोचरः ॥१॥
1. ācacakṣe'tha sadbhāvaṃ lakṣmaṇasya mahātmanaḥ ,

1. Then Guha, who roams the deep forests, explained the true devotion (sadbhāva) of the great-souled (mahātman) Lakshmana to the immeasurable (aprameya) Bharata.
तं जाग्रतं गुणैर्युक्तं वरचापेषुधारिणम् ।
भ्रातृ गुप्त्यर्थमत्यन्तमहं लक्ष्मणमब्रवम् ॥२॥
2. taṃ jāgrataṃ guṇairyuktaṃ varacāpeṣudhāriṇam ,
bhrātṛ guptyarthamatyantamahaṃ lakṣmaṇamabravam.
2. tam jāgratam guṇaiḥ yuktam varacāpeṣudhāriṇam
bhrātṛguptyartham atyantam aham lakṣmaṇam abravam

2. I spoke to that Lakshmana - who was vigilant (jāgratam), endowed with virtues, and held an excellent bow and arrows - specifically concerning the ultimate protection of his brother.
इयं तात सुखा शय्या त्वदर्थमुपकल्पिता ।
प्रत्याश्वसिहि शेष्वास्यां सुखं राघवनन्दन ॥३॥
3. iyaṃ tāta sukhā śayyā tvadarthamupakalpitā ,
pratyāśvasihi śeṣvāsyāṃ sukhaṃ rāghavanandana.
3. iyam tāta sukhā śayyā tvadartham upakalpitā
pratyāśvasihi śeṣva asyām sukham rāghavanandana
3. tāta rāghavanandana,
iyam sukhā śayyā tvadartham upakalpitā.
asyām sukham pratyāśvasihi śeṣva.
3. O dear one (tāta), this comfortable bed has been prepared for you. Relax and lie down on it comfortably, O delight of Raghu's line (rāghavanandana).
उचितो ऽयं जनः सर्वे दुःखानां त्वं सुखोचितः ।
धर्मात्मंस्तस्य गुप्त्यर्थं जागरिष्यामहे वयम् ॥४॥
4. ucito'yaṃ janaḥ sarve duḥkhānāṃ tvaṃ sukhocitaḥ ,
dharmātmaṃstasya guptyarthaṃ jāgariṣyāmahe vayam.
4. ucitaḥ ayam janaḥ sarve duḥkhānām tvam sukhochitaḥ
dharmātman tasya guptyartham jāgariṣyāmahe vayam
4. ayam janaḥ sarve duḥkhānām ucitaḥ tvam sukhochitaḥ

4. This entire populace is accustomed to hardships, while you are accustomed to comfort. O righteous soul (dharmātman), for his protection, we shall remain vigilant.
न हि रामात् प्रियतरो ममास्ति भुवि कश्चन ।
मोत्सुको भूर्ब्रवीम्येतदप्यसत्यं तवाग्रतः ॥५॥
5. na hi rāmāt priyataro mamāsti bhuvi kaścana ,
motsuko bhūrbravīmyetadapyasatyaṃ tavāgrataḥ.
5. na hi rāmāt priyataraḥ mama asti bhuvi kaścana mā
utsukaḥ bhūḥ bravīmi etat api asatyam tava agrataḥ
5. hi kaścana bhuvi rāmāt mama priyataraḥ na asti mā
utsukaḥ bhūḥ etat api asatyam tava agrataḥ bravīmi
5. Indeed, no one on earth is dearer to me than Rama. Do not be anxious; I would assert this (truth) even if it were a falsehood, in your presence.
अस्य प्रसादादाशंसे लोके ऽस्मिन् सुमहद् यशः ।
धर्मावाप्तिं च विपुलामर्थावाप्तिं च केवलाम् ॥६॥
6. asya prasādādāśaṃse loke'smin sumahad yaśaḥ ,
dharmāvāptiṃ ca vipulāmarthāvāptiṃ ca kevalām.
6. asya prasādāt āśaṃse loke asmin sumahat yaśaḥ
dharmāvāptim ca vipulām arthāvāptim ca kevalām
6. asya prasādāt asmin loke sumahat yaśaḥ ca vipulām
dharmāvāptim ca kevalām arthāvāptim ca āśaṃse
6. Through his grace, I hope for great renown in this world, and extensive attainment of righteousness (dharma), and complete attainment of wealth (artha).
सो ऽहं प्रियसखं रामं शयानं सह सीतया ।
रक्षिष्यामि धनुष्पाणिः सर्वैः स्वैर्ज्ञातिभिः सह ॥७॥
7. so'haṃ priyasakhaṃ rāmaṃ śayānaṃ saha sītayā ,
rakṣiṣyāmi dhanuṣpāṇiḥ sarvaiḥ svairjñātibhiḥ saha.
7. saḥ aham priyasakham rāmam śayānam saha sītayā
rakṣiṣyāmi dhanuṣpāṇiḥ sarvaiḥ svaiḥ jñātibhiḥ saha
7. saḥ aham dhanuṣpāṇiḥ sarvaiḥ svaiḥ jñātibhiḥ saha
sītayā saha śayānam priyasakham rāmam rakṣiṣyāmi
7. I, that very one, armed with a bow, will protect my dear friend Rama, who is lying down with Sita, along with all my own kinsmen.
न हि मे ऽविदितं किं चिद्वने ऽस्मिंश्चरतः सदा ।
चतुरङ्गं ह्यपि बलं प्रसहेम वयं युधि ॥८॥
8. na hi me'viditaṃ kiṃ cidvane'smiṃścarataḥ sadā ,
caturaṅgaṃ hyapi balaṃ prasahema vayaṃ yudhi.
8. na hi me aviditam kim cit vane asmin carataḥ sadā
| catur-aṅgam hi api balam prasahema vayam yudhi
8. hi me asmin vane sadā carataḥ kim cit aviditam na
vayam hi yudhi catur-aṅgam api balam prasahema
8. Indeed, since I am always roaming in this forest, nothing is unknown to me. We could certainly withstand even a four-limbed army in battle.
एवमस्माभिरुक्तेन लक्ष्मणेन महात्मना ।
अनुनीता वयं सर्वे धर्ममेवानुपश्यता ॥९॥
9. evamasmābhiruktena lakṣmaṇena mahātmanā ,
anunītā vayaṃ sarve dharmamevānupaśyatā.
9. evam asmābhiḥ uktena lakṣmaṇena mahātmanā |
anunītā vayam sarve dharmam eva anupaśyatā
9. evam asmābhiḥ uktena mahātmanā lakṣmaṇena
dharmam eva anupaśyatā vayam sarve anunītā
9. Having been addressed by us in this manner, Lakshmana, the great-souled one (mahātman), who always observed natural law (dharma), then appeased all of us.
कथं दाशरथौ भूमौ शयाने सह सीतया ।
शक्या निद्रामया लब्धुं जीवितं वा सुखानि वा ॥१०॥
10. kathaṃ dāśarathau bhūmau śayāne saha sītayā ,
śakyā nidrāmayā labdhuṃ jīvitaṃ vā sukhāni vā.
10. katham dāśarathau bhūmau śayāne saha sītayā |
śakyā nidrāmayā labdhum jīvitam vā sukhāni vā
10. dāśarathau sītayā saha bhūmau śayāne [sati],
katham nidrā jīvitam vā sukhāni vā nidrāmayā labdhum śakyā
10. How can sleep, or even life or comforts, be obtained by one who is sleepy, while Dasharatha's son lies on the ground with Sita?
यो न देवासुरैः सर्वैः शक्यः प्रसहितुं युधि ।
तं पश्य गुह संविष्टं तृणेषु सह सीतया ॥११॥
11. yo na devāsuraiḥ sarvaiḥ śakyaḥ prasahituṃ yudhi ,
taṃ paśya guha saṃviṣṭaṃ tṛṇeṣu saha sītayā.
11. yaḥ na deva-asuraiḥ sarvaiḥ śakyaḥ prasahitum
yudhi | tam paśya guha saṃviṣṭam tṛṇeṣu saha sītayā
11. guha! yaḥ sarvaiḥ deva-asuraiḥ yudhi prasahitum na
śakyaḥ [asti] tam sītayā saha tṛṇeṣu saṃviṣṭam paśya
11. O Guha, look at him, who cannot be withstood in battle by all the gods and demons, now lying down on the grass with Sita.
महता तपसा लब्धो विविधैश्च परिश्रमैः ।
एको दशरथस्यैष पुत्रः सदृशलक्षणः ॥१२॥
12. mahatā tapasā labdho vividhaiśca pariśramaiḥ ,
eko daśarathasyaiṣa putraḥ sadṛśalakṣaṇaḥ.
12. mahatā tapasā labdhaḥ vividhaiḥ ca pariśramaiḥ
ekaḥ daśarathasya eṣaḥ putraḥ sadṛśalakṣaṇaḥ
12. eṣaḥ daśarathasya ekaḥ putraḥ sadṛśalakṣaṇaḥ
mahatā tapasā vividhaiḥ ca pariśramaiḥ labdhaḥ
12. This only son of Dasharatha, possessing excellent characteristics, was obtained through great penance (tapas) and various strenuous efforts.
अस्मिन्प्रव्राजिते राजा न चिरं वर्तयिष्यति ।
विधवा मेदिनी नूनं क्षिप्रमेव भविष्यति ॥१३॥
13. asminpravrājite rājā na ciraṃ vartayiṣyati ,
vidhavā medinī nūnaṃ kṣiprameva bhaviṣyati.
13. asmin pravrājite rājā na ciram vartayiṣyati
vidhavā medinī nūnam kṣipram eva bhaviṣyati
13. asmin pravrājite rājā ciram na vartayiṣyati
nūnam medinī kṣipram eva vidhavā bhaviṣyati
13. Once he is exiled, the king will not survive for long. The earth will certainly and quickly become a widow.
विनद्य सुमहानादं श्रमेणोपरताः स्त्रियः ।
निर्घोषोपरतं नूनमद्य राजनिवेशनम् ॥१४॥
14. vinadya sumahānādaṃ śrameṇoparatāḥ striyaḥ ,
nirghoṣoparataṃ nūnamadya rājaniveśanam.
14. vinadya sumahānādam śrameṇa uparatāḥ striyaḥ
nirghoṣoparatam nūnam adya rājaniveśanam
14. striyaḥ sumahānādam vinadya śrameṇa uparatāḥ

14. After crying out with a very loud lament, the women have fallen silent from exhaustion. Surely, the king's palace today is devoid of sound.
कौसल्या चैव राजा च तथैव जननी मम ।
नाशंसे यदि ते सर्वे जीवेयुः शर्वरीमिमाम् ॥१५॥
15. kausalyā caiva rājā ca tathaiva jananī mama ,
nāśaṃse yadi te sarve jīveyuḥ śarvarīmimām.
15. kausalyā ca eva rājā ca tathā eva jananī mama
na āśaṃse yadi te sarve jīveyuḥ śarvarīm imām
15. kausalyā ca eva rājā ca tathā eva mama jananī
na āśaṃse yadi te sarve imām śarvarīm jīveyuḥ
15. I do not expect that Kausalya, the King, and likewise my own mother, all of them, will survive this night.
जीवेदपि हि मे माता शत्रुघ्नस्यान्ववेक्षया ।
दुःखिता या तु कौसल्या वीरसूर्विनशिष्यति ॥१६॥
16. jīvedapi hi me mātā śatrughnasyānvavekṣayā ,
duḥkhitā yā tu kausalyā vīrasūrvinaśiṣyati.
16. jīvet api hi me mātā śatrughnasya anvavekṣayā
duḥkhitā yā tu kausalyā vīrasūḥ vinaśiṣyati
16. me mātā api hi śatrughnasya anvavekṣayā jīvet
tu yā duḥkhitā vīrasūḥ kausalyā vinaśiṣyati
16. My own mother might indeed survive through the care of Shatrughna. However, the distressed Kausalya, mother of a hero, will surely perish.
अतिक्रान्तमतिक्रान्तमनवाप्य मनोरथम् ।
राज्ये राममनिक्षिप्य पिता मे विनशिष्यति ॥१७॥
17. atikrāntamatikrāntamanavāpya manoratham ,
rājye rāmamanikṣipya pitā me vinaśiṣyati.
17. atikrāntam atikrāntam anavāpya manoratham
rājye rāmam anikṣipya pitā me vinaśiṣyati
17. me pitā atikrāntam atikrāntam manoratham
anavāpya rājye rāmam anikṣipya vinaśiṣyati
17. My father will perish, his deep desire having passed unfulfilled, without installing Rama in the kingdom.
सिद्धार्थाः पितरं वृत्तं तस्मिन् काले ह्युपस्थिते ।
प्रेतकार्येषु सर्वेषु संस्करिष्यन्ति भूमिपम् ॥१८॥
18. siddhārthāḥ pitaraṃ vṛttaṃ tasmin kāle hyupasthite ,
pretakāryeṣu sarveṣu saṃskariṣyanti bhūmipam.
18. siddhārthāḥ pitaram vṛttam tasmin kāle hi upasthite
pretakāryeṣu sarveṣu saṃskariṣyanti bhūmipam
18. hi tस्मिन् काले उपस्थिते सिद्धार्थाः सर्वेषु
प्रेतकार्येषु वृत्तम् पितरम् भूमिपम् संस्करिष्यन्ति
18. When that time has indeed arrived, those whose purpose is accomplished will perform all funeral rites (saṃskāra) for the deceased father, the king.
रम्यचत्वरसंस्थानां सुविभक्तमहापथाम् ।
हर्म्यप्रासादसंपन्नां सर्वरत्नविभूषिताम् ॥१९॥
19. ramyacatvarasaṃsthānāṃ suvibhaktamahāpathām ,
harmyaprāsādasaṃpannāṃ sarvaratnavibhūṣitām.

harmyaprāsādasaṃpannām sarvaratnavibhūṣitām

19. Having charming squares and well-arranged (public spaces), with well-divided great roads, rich in mansions and palaces, and adorned with all jewels.
गजाश्वरथसंबाधां तूर्यनादविनादिताम् ।
सर्वकल्याणसंपूर्णां हृष्टपुष्टजनाकुलाम् ॥२०॥
20. gajāśvarathasaṃbādhāṃ tūryanādavināditām ,
sarvakalyāṇasaṃpūrṇāṃ hṛṣṭapuṣṭajanākulām.
20. gaj-āśva-ratha-saṃbādhām tūrya-nāda-vināditām
sarva-kalyāṇa-saṃpūrṇām hṛṣṭa-puṣṭa-jana-ākulām
20. gaj-āśva-ratha-saṃbādhām tūrya-nāda-vināditām
sarva-kalyāṇa-saṃpūrṇām hṛṣṭa-puṣṭa-jana-ākulām
20. (The capital city, which is) crowded with elephants, horses, and chariots, resounding with the sound of trumpets, complete with all prosperity, and filled with joyful and well-nourished people.
आरामोद्यानसंपूर्णां समाजोत्सवशालिनीम् ।
सुखिता विचरिष्यन्ति राजधानीं पितुर्मम ॥२१॥
21. ārāmodyānasaṃpūrṇāṃ samājotsavaśālinīm ,
sukhitā vicariṣyanti rājadhānīṃ piturmama.
21. ārāma-udyāna-saṃpūrṇām samāja-utsava-śālinīm
sukhitāḥ vicarisyanti rāja-dhānīm pituḥ mama
21. sukhitāḥ mama pituḥ rāja-dhānīm ārāma-udyāna-saṃpūrṇām
samāja-utsava-śālinīm vicarisyanti
21. (They) will happily reside in my father's capital city, which is full of pleasure gardens and parks, and adorned with festivals and social gatherings.
अपि सत्यप्रतिज्ञेन सार्धं कुशलिना वयम् ।
निवृत्ते समये ह्यस्मिन् सुखिताः प्रविशेमहि ॥२२॥
22. api satyapratijñena sārdhaṃ kuśalinā vayam ,
nivṛtte samaye hyasmin sukhitāḥ praviśemahi.
22. api satya-pratijñena sārdham kuśalinā vayam
nivṛtte samaye hi asmin sukhitāḥ pra-viśemahi
22. api hi vayam asmin samaye nivṛtte satya-pratijñena
kuśalinā sārdham sukhitāḥ pra-viśemahi
22. May we indeed, upon the conclusion of this period, happily enter (the city) along with the truth-pledged (Rama) and in good health.
परिदेवयमानस्य तस्यैवं सुमहात्मनः ।
तिष्ठतो राजपुत्रस्य शर्वरी सात्यवर्तत ॥२३॥
23. paridevayamānasya tasyaivaṃ sumahātmanaḥ ,
tiṣṭhato rājaputrasya śarvarī sātyavartata.
23. paridevayamānasya tasya evam su-mahā-ātmanaḥ
tiṣṭhataḥ rāja-putrasya śarvarī sā ati-avartata
23. tasya su-mahā-ātmanaḥ rāja-putrasya evam

23. As that greatly noble (ātman) prince, who was thus lamenting and standing, remained, the night passed.
प्रभाते विमले सूर्ये कारयित्वा जटा उभौ ।
अस्मिन्भागीरथीतीरे सुखं संतारितौ मया ॥२४॥
24. prabhāte vimale sūrye kārayitvā jaṭā ubhau ,
asminbhāgīrathītīre sukhaṃ saṃtāritau mayā.

asmin bhāgīrathī-tīre sukhaṃ saṃtāritau mayā

24. In the clear morning sun, after causing both of them to have matted locks formed, I comfortably ferried them across on this bank of the Bhāgīrathī (Ganges) river.
जटाधरौ तौ द्रुमचीरवाससौ महाबलौ कुञ्जरयूथपोपमौ ।
वरेषुचापासिधरौ परंतपौ व्यवेक्षमाणौ सह सीतया गतौ ॥२५॥
25. jaṭādharau tau drumacīravāsasau mahābalau kuñjarayūthapopamau ,
vareṣucāpāsidharau paraṃtapau vyavekṣamāṇau saha sītayā gatau.

25. Those two (Rāma and Lakṣmaṇa), bearing matted locks and clad in tree-bark garments, mighty and resembling two leaders of elephant herds, departed with Sītā, cautiously looking around.
