ततः पौलस्त्य सचिवाः श्रुत्वा चेन्द्रजितं हतम् ।
आचचक्षुरभिज्ञाय दशग्रीवाय सव्यथाः ॥१॥
1. tataḥ paulastya sacivāḥ śrutvā cendrajitaṃ hatam ,

1. Then, the distressed ministers of Paulastya (Rāvaṇa), having heard and ascertained that Indrajit was slain, reported to Daśagrīva (Rāvaṇa).
युद्धे हतो महाराज लक्ष्मणेन तवात्मजः ।
विभीषणसहायेन मिषतां नो महाद्युते ॥२॥
2. yuddhe hato mahārāja lakṣmaṇena tavātmajaḥ ,
vibhīṣaṇasahāyena miṣatāṃ no mahādyute.

2. O great king, O glorious one! Your son was slain in battle by Lakṣmaṇa, who was assisted by Vibhīṣaṇa, even while we were looking on.
शूरः शूरेण संगम्य संयुगेष्वपराजितः ।
लक्ष्णनेन हतः शूरः पुत्रस्ते विबुधेन्द्रजित् ॥३॥
3. śūraḥ śūreṇa saṃgamya saṃyugeṣvaparājitaḥ ,
lakṣṇanena hataḥ śūraḥ putraste vibudhendrajit.

3. Your valiant son, Vibudhendrajit (Indrajit), who was unconquered in battles, that hero was slain by the valiant Lakṣmaṇa after encountering him.
स तं प्रतिभयं श्रुत्वा वधं पुत्रस्य दारुणम् ।
घोरमिन्द्रजितः संख्ये कश्मलं प्राविशन्महत् ॥४॥
4. sa taṃ pratibhayaṃ śrutvā vadhaṃ putrasya dāruṇam ,
ghoramindrajitaḥ saṃkhye kaśmalaṃ prāviśanmahat.

4. Upon hearing of the terrifying, dreadful, and terrible death of his son Indrajit in battle, he fell into a deep stupor.
उपलभ्य चिरात् संज्ञां राजा राक्षसपुंगवः ।
पुत्रशोकार्दितो दीनो विललापाकुलेन्द्रियः ॥५॥
5. upalabhya cirāt saṃjñāṃ rājā rākṣasapuṃgavaḥ ,
putraśokārdito dīno vilalāpākulendriyaḥ.

5. After a long time, having regained his consciousness, the king, the foremost among the rakshasas, afflicted by grief for his son and utterly dejected, began to lament with agitated senses.
हा राक्षसचमूमुख्य मम वत्स महारथ ।
जित्वेन्द्रं कथमद्य त्वं लक्ष्मणस्य वशं गतः ॥६॥
6. hā rākṣasacamūmukhya mama vatsa mahāratha ,
jitvendraṃ kathamadya tvaṃ lakṣmaṇasya vaśaṃ gataḥ.
6. hā rākṣasacamūmukhya mama vatsa mahāratha jitvā
indram katham adya tvam lakṣmaṇasya vaśam gataḥ

6. Alas, O chief of the rakshasa army, my dear son, great warrior! How is it that you, after conquering Indra, have today fallen under the sway of Lakshmana?
ननु त्वमिषुभिः क्रुद्धो भिन्द्याः कालान्तकावपि ।
मन्दरस्यापि शृङ्गाणि किं पुनर्लक्ष्मणं रणे ॥७॥
7. nanu tvamiṣubhiḥ kruddho bhindyāḥ kālāntakāvapi ,
mandarasyāpi śṛṅgāṇi kiṃ punarlakṣmaṇaṃ raṇe.
7. nanu tvam iṣubhiḥ kruddhaḥ bhindyāḥ kālāntakau api
mandarasya api śṛṅgāṇi kim punaḥ lakṣmaṇam raṇe

7. Surely, you, when enraged, with your arrows, could pierce even Kāla (the god of death) and Antaka, and even the peaks of Mount Mandara; what then of Lakshmana in battle?
अद्य वैवस्वतो राजा भूयो बहुमतो मम ।
येनाद्य त्वं महाबाहो संयुक्तः कालधर्मणा ॥८॥
8. adya vaivasvato rājā bhūyo bahumato mama ,
yenādya tvaṃ mahābāho saṃyuktaḥ kāladharmaṇā.
8. adya vaivasvataḥ rājā bhūyaḥ bahumataḥ mama |
yena adya tvam mahābāho saṃyuktaḥ kāladharmaṇā
8. mahābāho,
adya yena tvam adya kāladharmaṇā saṃyuktaḥ,
tataḥ vaivasvataḥ rājā bhūyaḥ mama bahumataḥ.
8. Today, King Vaivasvata (Yama) is again greatly honored by me, because through him, O mighty-armed one, you have today been united with death, which is the natural law (dharma) of time.
एष पन्थाः सुयोधानां सर्वामरगणेष्वपि ।
यः कृते हन्यते भर्तुः स पुमान् स्वर्गमृच्छति ॥९॥
9. eṣa panthāḥ suyodhānāṃ sarvāmaragaṇeṣvapi ,
yaḥ kṛte hanyate bhartuḥ sa pumān svargamṛcchati.
9. eṣaḥ panthāḥ suyodhānām sarvāmaragaṇeṣu api | yaḥ
kṛte hanyate bhartuḥ saḥ pumān svargam ṛcchati
9. eṣaḥ panthāḥ suyodhānām sarvāmaragaṇeṣu api.
yaḥ pumān bhartuḥ kṛte hanyate,
saḥ svargam ṛcchati.
9. This is the way of valiant warriors, and indeed, it is observed even among all the hosts of gods. That man who is slain for his lord's sake attains heaven.
अद्य देवगणाः सर्वे लोकपालास्तथर्षयः ।
हतमिन्द्रजितं दृष्ट्वा सुखं स्वप्स्यन्ति निर्भयाः ॥१०॥
10. adya devagaṇāḥ sarve lokapālāstatharṣayaḥ ,
hatamindrajitaṃ dṛṣṭvā sukhaṃ svapsyanti nirbhayāḥ.
10. adya devagaṇāḥ sarve lokapālāḥ tathā ṛṣayaḥ |
hatam indrajitam dṛṣṭvā sukham svapsyanti nirbhayāḥ
10. adya sarve devagaṇāḥ,
lokapālāḥ tathā ṛṣayaḥ,
indrajitam hatam dṛṣṭvā,
nirbhayāḥ sukham svapsyanti.
10. Today, all the hosts of gods, the guardians of the worlds, and the sages, having witnessed Indrajit's demise, will sleep peacefully and without fear.
अद्य लोकास्त्रयः कृत्स्नाः पृथिवी च सकानना ।
एकेनेन्द्रजिता हीना शूण्येव प्रतिभाति मे ॥११॥
11. adya lokāstrayaḥ kṛtsnāḥ pṛthivī ca sakānanā ,
ekenendrajitā hīnā śūṇyeva pratibhāti me.
11. adya lokāḥ trayaḥ kṛtsnāḥ pṛthivī ca sakānanā
| ekena indrajitā hīnā śūnyā iva pratibhāti me
11. adya trayaḥ kṛtsnāḥ lokāḥ,
ca sakānanā pṛthivī,
ekena indrajitā hīnā,
me śūnyā iva pratibhāti.
11. Today, the entire three worlds and the earth with its forests, missing just Indrajit, appear to me as if empty.
अद्य नैरृतकन्यायां श्रोष्याम्यन्तःपुरे रवम् ।
करेणुसंघस्य यथा निनादं गिरिगह्वरे ॥१२॥
12. adya nairṛtakanyāyāṃ śroṣyāmyantaḥpure ravam ,
kareṇusaṃghasya yathā ninādaṃ girigahvare.
12. adya nairṛtakanyāyām śroṣyāmi antaḥpure ravam
kareṇusaṅghasya yathā ninādam girigahvare
12. Today, in the inner chambers of the daughter of Nirṛti, I will hear a cry, just like the trumpeting of a herd of female elephants in a mountain cave.
यौवराज्यं च लङ्कां च रक्षांसि च परंतप ।
मातरं मां च भार्यां च क्व गतो ऽसि विहाय नः ॥१३॥
13. yauvarājyaṃ ca laṅkāṃ ca rakṣāṃsi ca paraṃtapa ,
mātaraṃ māṃ ca bhāryāṃ ca kva gato'si vihāya naḥ.
13. yauvarājyam ca laṅkām ca rakṣāṃsi ca paraṃtapa
mātaram mām ca bhāryām ca kva gataḥ asi vihāya naḥ
13. O scorcher of foes, where have you gone, abandoning us, the crown-princeship, Laṅkā, the rakṣasas, your mother, me, and your wife?
मम नाम त्वया वीर गतस्य यमसादनम् ।
प्रेतकार्याणि कार्याणि विपरीते हि वर्तसे ॥१४॥
14. mama nāma tvayā vīra gatasya yamasādanam ,
pretakāryāṇi kāryāṇi viparīte hi vartase.

14. O hero, it is by you that the funeral rites should have been performed for me, had I gone to Yama's abode. Instead, you are acting in the reverse manner.
स त्वं जीवति सुग्रीवे राघवे च सलक्ष्मणे ।
मम शल्यमनुद्धृत्य क्व गतो ऽसि विहाय नः ॥१५॥
15. sa tvaṃ jīvati sugrīve rāghave ca salakṣmaṇe ,
mama śalyamanuddhṛtya kva gato'si vihāya naḥ.
15. sa tvam jīvati sugrīve rāghave ca salakṣmaṇe
mama śalyam anuddhṛtya kva gataḥ asi vihāya naḥ
15. That very you (Indrajit), while Sugrīva and Rāma, along with Lakṣmaṇa, are still alive, where have you gone, abandoning us, without extracting this thorn (śalya) from my heart?
एवमादिविलापार्तं रावणं राक्षसाधिपम् ।
आविवेश महान् कोपः पुत्रव्यसनसंभवः ॥१६॥
16. evamādivilāpārtaṃ rāvaṇaṃ rākṣasādhipam ,
āviveśa mahān kopaḥ putravyasanasaṃbhavaḥ.
16. evamādivilāpārtam rāvaṇam rākṣasādhipam
āviveśa mahān kopaḥ putravyasanasaṃbhavaḥ
16. evamādivilāpārtam rāvaṇam rākṣasādhipam

16. A great rage, born from the sorrow of his son's demise, overwhelmed Rāvaṇa, the lord of the rākṣasas, who was thus afflicted by lamentation.
घोरं प्रकृत्या रूपं तत्तस्य क्रोधाग्निमूर्छितम् ।
बभूव रूपं रुद्रस्य क्रुद्धस्येव दुरासदम् ॥१७॥
17. ghoraṃ prakṛtyā rūpaṃ tattasya krodhāgnimūrchitam ,
babhūva rūpaṃ rudrasya kruddhasyeva durāsadam.
17. ghoram prakṛtyā rūpam tat tasya krodhāgnimūrchitam
babhūva rūpam rudrasya kruddhasya iva durāsadam
17. ghoram prakṛtyā rūpam tat tasya krodhāgnimūrchitam

17. His naturally fearsome form, overcome by the fire of his anger, became unapproachable, like the form of an enraged Rudra.
तस्य क्रुद्धस्य नेत्राभ्यां प्रापतन्नस्रबिन्दवः ।
दीप्ताभ्यामिव दीपाभ्यां सार्चिषः स्नेहबिन्दवः ॥१८॥
18. tasya kruddhasya netrābhyāṃ prāpatannasrabindavaḥ ,
dīptābhyāmiva dīpābhyāṃ sārciṣaḥ snehabindavaḥ.
18. tasya kruddhasya netrābhyām prāpatan asrabindavaḥ
dīptābhyām iva dīpābhyām sārciṣaḥ snehabindavaḥ
18. tasya kruddhasya netrābhyām prāpatan asrabindavaḥ

18. From his enraged eyes, drops of tears fell, just as drops of oil, accompanied by flames, would fall from two blazing lamps.
दन्तान् विदशतस्तस्य श्रूयते दशनस्वनः ।
यन्त्रस्यावेष्ट्यमानस्य महतो दानवैरिव ॥१९॥
19. dantān vidaśatastasya śrūyate daśanasvanaḥ ,
yantrasyāveṣṭyamānasya mahato dānavairiva.
19. dantān vidaśataḥ tasya śrūyate daśanasvanaḥ
yantrasya āveṣṭyamānasya mahataḥ dānavaiḥ iva
19. dantān vidaśataḥ tasya śrūyate daśanasvanaḥ

19. The gnashing sound of his teeth was heard, resembling that of a colossal machine being turned by demons (dānavas).
कालाग्निरिव संक्रुद्धो यां यां दिशमवैक्षत ।
तस्यां तस्यां भयत्रस्ता राक्षसाः संनिलिल्यिरे ॥२०॥
20. kālāgniriva saṃkruddho yāṃ yāṃ diśamavaikṣata ,
tasyāṃ tasyāṃ bhayatrastā rākṣasāḥ saṃnililyire.
20. kāla-agniḥ iva saṃkruddhaḥ yām yām diśam avaikṣata
tasyām tasyām bhayatrastāḥ rākṣasāḥ sannililyire
20. saṃkruddhaḥ kāla-agniḥ iva yām yām diśam avaikṣata
tasyām tasyām bhayatrastāḥ rākṣasāḥ sannililyire
20. Intensely enraged, like the destructive fire (kālāgni), in whichever direction he looked, in each of those directions, the demons, terrified by fear, hid themselves completely.
तमन्तकमिव क्रुद्धं चराचरचिखादिषुम् ।
वीक्षमाणं दिशः सर्वा राक्षसा नोपचक्रमुः ॥२१॥
21. tamantakamiva kruddhaṃ carācaracikhādiṣum ,
vīkṣamāṇaṃ diśaḥ sarvā rākṣasā nopacakramuḥ.
21. tam antakam iva kruddham carācara-cikhādiṣum
vīkṣamāṇam diśaḥ sarvāḥ rākṣasāḥ na upacakramuḥ
21. rākṣasāḥ tam kruddham antakam iva carācara-cikhādiṣum
sarvāḥ diśaḥ vīkṣamāṇam na upacakramuḥ
21. The demons did not approach him, who was enraged like the god of death (Antaka), desiring to devour all moving and unmoving beings, as he looked in all directions.
ततः परमसंक्रुद्धो रावणो राक्षसाधिपः ।
अब्रवीद् रक्षसां मध्ये संस्तम्भयिषुराहवे ॥२२॥
22. tataḥ paramasaṃkruddho rāvaṇo rākṣasādhipaḥ ,
abravīd rakṣasāṃ madhye saṃstambhayiṣurāhave.
22. tataḥ parama-saṃkruddhaḥ rāvaṇaḥ rākṣasa-adhipaḥ
abravīt rakṣasām madhye saṃstambhayiṣuḥ āhave
22. tataḥ parama-saṃkruddhaḥ rāvaṇaḥ rākṣasa-adhipaḥ
rakṣasām madhye āhave saṃstambhayiṣuḥ abravīt
22. Then, Rāvaṇa, the lord of the demons, extremely enraged, spoke in the midst of the demons, desiring to rally them in battle.
मया वर्षसहस्राणि चरित्वा दुश्चरं तपः ।
तेषु तेष्ववकाशेषु स्वयम्भूः परितोषितः ॥२३॥
23. mayā varṣasahasrāṇi caritvā duścaraṃ tapaḥ ,
teṣu teṣvavakāśeṣu svayambhūḥ paritoṣitaḥ.
23. mayā varṣa-sahasrāṇi caritvā duścaram tapaḥ
teṣu teṣu avakāśeṣu svayambhūḥ paritoṣitaḥ
23. mayā duścaram tapaḥ varṣa-sahasrāṇi teṣu teṣu
avakāśeṣu caritvā svayambhūḥ paritoṣitaḥ
23. By me, having performed arduous asceticism (tapas) for thousands of years in those various places, the Self-existent (Svayambhū) was satisfied.
तस्यैव तपसो व्युष्ट्या प्रसादाच्च स्वयम्भुवः ।
नासुरेभ्यो न देवेभ्यो भयं मम कदा चन ॥२४॥
24. tasyaiva tapaso vyuṣṭyā prasādācca svayambhuvaḥ ,
nāsurebhyo na devebhyo bhayaṃ mama kadā cana.
24. tasya eva tapasas vyuṣṭyā prasādāt ca svayambhuvaḥ
na asurebhyaḥ na devebhyaḥ bhayam mama kadā cana
24. mama tasya eva tapasas vyuṣṭyā ca svayambhuvaḥ
prasādāt asurebhyaḥ na devebhyaḥ na kadā cana bhayam
24. Through the fruition of that very asceticism (tapas) and by the grace of the Self-existent Brahmā, I have no fear ever, neither from demons nor from gods.
कवचं ब्रह्मदत्तं मे यदादित्यसमप्रभम् ।
देवासुरविमर्देषु न भिन्नं वज्रशक्तिभिः ॥२५॥
25. kavacaṃ brahmadattaṃ me yadādityasamaprabham ,
devāsuravimardeṣu na bhinnaṃ vajraśaktibhiḥ.
25. kavacam brahmadattam me yat ādityasamaprabham
devāsuravimardeṣu na bhinnam vajraśaktibhiḥ
25. me brahmadattam kavacam yat ādityasamaprabham
devāsuravimardeṣu vajraśaktibhiḥ na bhinnam
25. I possess an armor, given by Brahmā, which shines like the sun. In the clashes between gods and asuras, it was not pierced by even thunderbolts or divine missiles (śakti).
तेन मामद्य संयुक्तं रथस्थमिह संयुगे ।
प्रतीयात् को ऽद्य मामाजौ साक्षादपि पुरंदरः ॥२६॥
26. tena māmadya saṃyuktaṃ rathasthamiha saṃyuge ,
pratīyāt ko'dya māmājau sākṣādapi puraṃdaraḥ.
26. tena mām adya saṃyuktam rathastham iha saṃyuge
pratīyāt kaḥ adya mām ājau sākṣāt api purandaraḥ
26. tena saṃyuktam rathastham mām iha saṃyuge adya
kaḥ purandaraḥ api sākṣāt adya ājau mām pratīyāt
26. With that armor equipping me today, and standing in my chariot here in this battle, who indeed could confront me in combat today, even if it were Indra himself?
यत्तदाभिप्रसन्नेन सशरं कार्मुकं महत् ।
देवासुरविमर्देषु मम दत्तं स्वयम्भुवा ॥२७॥
27. yattadābhiprasannena saśaraṃ kārmukaṃ mahat ,
devāsuravimardeṣu mama dattaṃ svayambhuvā.
27. yat tadā abhiprasannena saśaram kārmukam mahat
devāsuravimardeṣu mama dattam svayambhuvā
27. yat saśaram mahat kārmukam tadā abhiprasannena
svayambhuvā mama devāsuravimardeṣu dattam
27. That great bow, complete with arrows, which was given to me by the highly pleased Self-existent Brahmā at that time, for the battles between gods and asuras.
अद्य तूर्यशतैर्भीमं धनुरुत्थाप्यतां महत् ।
रामलक्ष्मणयोरेव वधाय परमाहवे ॥२८॥
28. adya tūryaśatairbhīmaṃ dhanurutthāpyatāṃ mahat ,
rāmalakṣmaṇayoreva vadhāya paramāhave.
28. adya tūryaśataiḥ bhīmam dhanuḥ utthāpyatām
mahat rāmalakṣmaṇayoḥ eva vadhāya paramāhave
28. adya paramāhave rāmalakṣmaṇayoḥ vadhāya eva
bhīmam mahat dhanuḥ tūryaśataiḥ utthāpyatām
28. Today, in the great battle (paramāhave), let the formidable, mighty bow be raised with hundreds of trumpets, specifically for the purpose of killing Rāma and Lakṣmaṇa.
स पुत्रवधसंतप्तः शूरः क्रोधवशं गतः ।
समीक्ष्य रावणो बुद्ध्या सीतां हन्तुं व्यवस्यत ॥२९॥
29. sa putravadhasaṃtaptaḥ śūraḥ krodhavaśaṃ gataḥ ,
samīkṣya rāvaṇo buddhyā sītāṃ hantuṃ vyavasyata.
29. saḥ putravadhasaṃtaptaḥ śūraḥ krodhavaśam gataḥ
samīkṣya rāvaṇaḥ buddhyā sītām hantum vyavasyata
29. saḥ putravadhasaṃtaptaḥ śūraḥ krodhavaśam gataḥ
rāvaṇaḥ buddhyā samīkṣya sītām hantum vyavasyata
29. Tormented by the death of his son, that valiant Rāvaṇa, overcome by anger, after contemplating the situation with his intellect (buddhi), resolved to kill Sītā.
प्रत्यवेक्ष्य तु ताम्राक्षः सुघोरो घोरदर्शनान् ।
दीनो दीनस्वरान् सर्वांस्तानुवाच निशाचरान् ॥३०॥
30. pratyavekṣya tu tāmrākṣaḥ sughoro ghoradarśanān ,
dīno dīnasvarān sarvāṃstānuvāca niśācarān.
30. pratyavekṣya tu tāmrākṣaḥ sughoraḥ ghoradarśanān
dīnaḥ dīnasvarān sarvān tān uvāca niśācarān
30. tu dīnaḥ sughoraḥ tāmrākṣaḥ pratyavekṣya
ghoradarśanān dīnasvarān sarvān tān niśācarān uvāca
30. But the exceedingly dreadful, red-eyed one (Rāvaṇa), himself distressed, after observing all those night-wanderers who were of terrible appearance and spoke in wretched voices, addressed them.
मायया मम वत्सेन वञ्चनार्थं वनौकसाम् ।
किं चिदेव हतं तत्र सीतेयमिति दर्शितम् ॥३१॥
31. māyayā mama vatsena vañcanārthaṃ vanaukasām ,
kiṃ cideva hataṃ tatra sīteyamiti darśitam.

31. My son, by means of his magical power (māyā), made it appear as if 'this is Sītā' who was killed there, for the sole purpose of deceiving the forest-dwellers.
तदिदं सत्यमेवाहं करिष्ये प्रियमात्मनः ।
वैदेहीं नाशयिष्यामि क्षत्रबन्धुमनुव्रताम् ।
इत्येवमुक्त्वा सचिवान् खड्गमाशु परामृशत् ॥३२॥
32. tadidaṃ satyamevāhaṃ kariṣye priyamātmanaḥ ,
vaidehīṃ nāśayiṣyāmi kṣatrabandhumanuvratām ,
ityevamuktvā sacivān khaḍgamāśu parāmṛśat.
32. tat idam satyam eva aham kariṣye
priyam ātmanaḥ vaidehīm nāśayiṣyāmi
kṣatrabandhum anuvratām iti evam
uktvā sacivān khaḍgam āśu parāmṛśat
32. aham satyam eva ātmanaḥ priyam idam
tat kariṣye kṣatrabandhum anuvratām
vaidehīm nāśayiṣyāmi iti evam
sacivān uktvā khaḍgam āśu parāmṛśat
32. Therefore, I will certainly do this, which is agreeable to my own self (ātman). I will destroy Vaidehī, who is devoted to that kṣatriya-kinsman. Having said this to his ministers, he quickly seized his sword.
उद्धृत्य गुणसंपन्नं विमलाम्बरवर्चसं ।
निष्पपात स वेगेन सभायाः सचिवैर्वृतः ॥३३॥
33. uddhṛtya guṇasaṃpannaṃ vimalāmbaravarcasaṃ ,
niṣpapāta sa vegena sabhāyāḥ sacivairvṛtaḥ.

33. Having drawn (the sword) that was endowed with excellent qualities and shone like the clear sky, he quickly rushed out of the assembly hall, surrounded by his ministers.
रावणः पुत्रशोकेन भृशमाकुलचेतनः ।
संक्रुद्धः खड्गमादाय सहसा यत्र मैथिली ॥३४॥
34. rāvaṇaḥ putraśokena bhṛśamākulacetanaḥ ,
saṃkruddhaḥ khaḍgamādāya sahasā yatra maithilī.

34. Rāvaṇa, his mind greatly agitated by the grief for his son, became enraged. Suddenly, taking his sword, he rushed to where Maithilī was.
व्रजन्तं राक्षसं प्रेक्ष्य सिंहनादं प्रचुक्रुशुः ।
ऊचुश्चान्योन्यमाश्लिष्य संक्रुद्धं प्रेक्ष्य राक्षसाः ॥३५॥
35. vrajantaṃ rākṣasaṃ prekṣya siṃhanādaṃ pracukruśuḥ ,
ūcuścānyonyamāśliṣya saṃkruddhaṃ prekṣya rākṣasāḥ.
35. vrajantam rākṣasam prekṣya siṃhanādam pracukruśuḥ
ūcuḥ ca anyonyam āśliṣya saṃkruddham prekṣya rākṣasāḥ

35. Upon seeing the departing demon (Rāvaṇa), they (the rākṣasas) roared a lion's roar. And embracing one another, the rākṣasas spoke, having seen the enraged (Rāvaṇa).
अद्यैनं ताव् उभौ दृष्ट्वा भ्रातरौ प्रव्यथिष्यतः ।
लोकपाला हि चत्वारः क्रुद्धेनानेन निर्जिताः ।
बहवः शत्रवश्चान्ये संयुगेष्वभिपातिताः ॥३६॥
36. adyainaṃ tāv ubhau dṛṣṭvā bhrātarau pravyathiṣyataḥ ,
lokapālā hi catvāraḥ kruddhenānena nirjitāḥ ,
bahavaḥ śatravaścānye saṃyugeṣvabhipātitāḥ.
36. adya enam tau ubhau dṛṣṭvā bhrātarau
pravyathiṣyataḥ lokapālāḥ hi catvāraḥ
kruddhena anena nirjitāḥ bahavaḥ
śatravaḥ ca anye saṃyugeṣu abhipātitāḥ
36. adya tau ubhau bhrātarau enam dṛṣṭvā
pravyathiṣyataḥ hi catvāraḥ lokapālāḥ
anena kruddhena nirjitāḥ ca anye
bahavaḥ śatravaḥ saṃyugeṣu abhipātitāḥ
36. Today, having seen him, those two brothers (Rama and Lakshmana) will be greatly distressed. Indeed, the four guardians of the worlds were conquered by this enraged one, and many other enemies were struck down in battles.
तेषां संजल्पमानानामशोकवनिकां गताम् ।
अभिदुद्राव वैदेहीं रावणः क्रोधमूर्छितः ॥३७॥
37. teṣāṃ saṃjalpamānānāmaśokavanikāṃ gatām ,
abhidudrāva vaidehīṃ rāvaṇaḥ krodhamūrchitaḥ.
37. teṣām saṃjalpamānānām aśokavanikām gatām
abhidudrāva vaidehīm rāvaṇaḥ krodhamūrchitaḥ

37. While they (the demonesses) were conversing, Rāvaṇa, overcome with rage, rushed towards Vaidehī (Sītā), who had gone to the Aśoka grove.
वार्यमाणः सुसंक्रुद्धः सुहृद्भिर्हितबुद्धिभिः ।
अभ्यधावत संक्रुद्धः खे ग्रहो रोहिणीमिव ॥३८॥
38. vāryamāṇaḥ susaṃkruddhaḥ suhṛdbhirhitabuddhibhiḥ ,
abhyadhāvata saṃkruddhaḥ khe graho rohiṇīmiva.
38. vāryamāṇaḥ susaṃkruddhaḥ suhṛdbhiḥ hitabuddhibhiḥ
abhyadhāvata saṃkruddhaḥ khe grahaḥ rohiṇīm iva

38. Though being restrained by his well-meaning friends, the extremely enraged Rāvaṇa rushed forward, just like an enraged planet rushes towards Rohiṇī (constellation) in the sky.
मैथिली रक्ष्यमाणा तु राक्षसीभिरनिन्दिता ।
ददर्श राक्षसं क्रुद्धं निस्त्रिंशवरधारिणम् ॥३९॥
39. maithilī rakṣyamāṇā tu rākṣasībhiraninditā ,
dadarśa rākṣasaṃ kruddhaṃ nistriṃśavaradhāriṇam.
39. maithilī rakṣyamāṇā tu rākṣasībhiḥ aninditā
dadarśa rākṣasam kruddham nistriṃśavaradhāriṇam
39. tu rākṣasībhiḥ rakṣyamāṇā aninditā maithilī
kruddham nistriṃśavaradhāriṇam rākṣasam dadarśa
39. But the blameless Maithilī (Sītā), while being guarded by the demonesses, saw the enraged demon (Rāvaṇa) wielding an excellent sword.
तं निशाम्य सनिस्त्रिंशं व्यथिता जनकात्मजा ।
निवार्यमाणं बहुशः सुहृद्भिरनिवर्तिनम् ॥४०॥
40. taṃ niśāmya sanistriṃśaṃ vyathitā janakātmajā ,
nivāryamāṇaṃ bahuśaḥ suhṛdbhiranivartinam.
40. tam niśāmya sanistriṃśam vyathitā janakātmajā
nivāryamāṇam bahuśaḥ suhṛdbhiḥ anivartinam

40. Distressed, Janaka's daughter (Sītā) saw him (Rāvaṇa), armed with a sword, and though repeatedly restrained by his friends, he remained unyielding.
यथायं मामभिक्रुद्धः समभिद्रवति स्वयम् ।
वधिष्यति सनाथां मामनाथामिव दुर्मतिः ॥४१॥
41. yathāyaṃ māmabhikruddhaḥ samabhidravati svayam ,
vadhiṣyati sanāthāṃ māmanāthāmiva durmatiḥ.
41. yathā ayam mām abhikruddhaḥ samabhidravati svayam
vadhiṣyati sanāthām mām anāthām iva durmatiḥ
41. yathā ayam durmatiḥ abhikruddhaḥ svayam mām
samabhidravati saḥ sanāthām mām anāthām iva vadhiṣyati
41. How this evil-minded one, filled with intense rage, rushes at me personally. He will kill me, who has a protector, just as if I were unprotected.
बहुशश्चोदयामास भर्तारं मामनुव्रताम् ।
भार्या भव रमस्येति प्रत्याख्यातो ऽभवन्मया ॥४२॥
42. bahuśaścodayāmāsa bhartāraṃ māmanuvratām ,
bhāryā bhava ramasyeti pratyākhyāto'bhavanmayā.
42. bahuśaḥ codayāmāsa bhartāram mām anuvratām bhāryā
bhava ramasva iti pratyākhyātaḥ abhavat mayā
42. saḥ bahuśaḥ mām bhartāram anuvratām codayāmāsa
bhāryā bhava ramasva iti mayā pratyākhyātaḥ abhavat
42. He repeatedly urged me, who was devoted to my husband, saying, "Become my wife! Enjoy yourself!" But he was rejected by me.
सो ऽयं मामनुपस्थानाद्व्यक्तं नैराश्यमागतः ।
क्रोधमोहसमाविष्टो निहन्तुं मां समुद्यतः ॥४३॥
43. so'yaṃ māmanupasthānādvyaktaṃ nairāśyamāgataḥ ,
krodhamohasamāviṣṭo nihantuṃ māṃ samudyataḥ.
43. saḥ ayam mām anupasthānāt vyaktam nairāśyam āgataḥ
krodhamohasamāviṣṭaḥ nihantum mām samudyataḥ
43. saḥ ayam mām anupasthānāt vyaktam nairāśyam āgataḥ
krodhamohasamāviṣṭaḥ mām nihantum samudyataḥ asti
43. This very Rāvaṇa, having clearly fallen into despair because of my refusal to yield, and overcome by anger and delusion (moha), is now ready to kill me.
अथ वा तौ नरव्याघ्रौ भ्रातरौ रामलक्ष्मणौ ।
मन्निमित्तमनार्येण समरे ऽद्य निपातितौ ।
अहो धिन्मन्निमित्तो ऽयं विनाशो राजपुत्रयोः ॥४४॥
44. atha vā tau naravyāghrau bhrātarau rāmalakṣmaṇau ,
mannimittamanāryeṇa samare'dya nipātitau ,
aho dhinmannimitto'yaṃ vināśo rājaputrayoḥ.
44. atha vā tau naravyāghrau bhrātarau
rāmalakṣmaṇau mannimittam anāryeṇa
samare adya nipātitau aho dhik
mannimittaḥ ayam vināśaḥ rājaputrayoḥ

ayam rājaputrayoḥ vināśaḥ mannimittaḥ
44. Or perhaps, those two tiger-like brothers, Rāma and Lakṣmaṇa, have been struck down in battle today by the ignoble one on my account. Alas, shame! This destruction of the two princes is due to me.
हनूमतो हि तद्वाक्यं न कृतं क्षुद्रया मया ।
यद्यहं तस्य पृष्ठेन तदायासमनिन्दिता ।
नाद्यैवमनुशोचेयं भर्तुरङ्कगता सती ॥४५॥
45. hanūmato hi tadvākyaṃ na kṛtaṃ kṣudrayā mayā ,
yadyahaṃ tasya pṛṣṭhena tadāyāsamaninditā ,
nādyaivamanuśoceyaṃ bharturaṅkagatā satī.
45. hanūmataḥ hi tat vākyam na kṛtam
kṣudrayā mayā yadi aham tasya pṛṣṭhena
tadā āyāsam aninditā na adya
evam anuśoceyam bhartuḥ aṅkagatā satī
45. hi hanūmataḥ tat vākyam kṣudrayā
mayā na kṛtam yadi aham aninditā
tasya pṛṣṭhena tadā āyāsam bhartuḥ
aṅkagatā satī adya evam na anuśoceyam
45. Indeed, that counsel of Hanumān was not followed by me, the wretched one. If I, being blameless, had come then on his back, I would not be lamenting like this today, while being on my husband's lap.
मन्ये तु हृदयं तस्याः कौसल्यायाः फलिष्यति ।
एकपुत्रा यदा पुत्रं विनष्टं श्रोष्यते युधि ॥४६॥
46. manye tu hṛdayaṃ tasyāḥ kausalyāyāḥ phaliṣyati ,
ekaputrā yadā putraṃ vinaṣṭaṃ śroṣyate yudhi.
46. manye tu hṛdayam tasyāḥ kausalyāyāḥ phaliṣyati
ekaputrā yadā putram vinaṣṭam śroṣyate yudhi
46. tu manye kausalyāyāḥ tasyāḥ hṛdayam phaliṣyati
yadā ekaputrā yudhi vinaṣṭam putram śroṣyate
46. But I think that the heart of Kauśalyā will burst, she who has only one son, when she hears of her son's destruction in battle.
सा हि जन्म च बाल्यं च यौवनं च महात्मनः ।
धर्मकार्याणि रूपं च रुदती संस्रमिष्यति ॥४७॥
47. sā hi janma ca bālyaṃ ca yauvanaṃ ca mahātmanaḥ ,
dharmakāryāṇi rūpaṃ ca rudatī saṃsramiṣyati.
47. sā hi janma ca bālyam ca yauvanam ca mahātmanaḥ
dharmakāryāṇi rūpam ca rudatī saṃsramiṣyati
47. hi sā rudatī mahātmanaḥ janma ca bālyam ca yauvanam
ca dharmakāryāṇi ca rūpam ca saṃsramiṣyati
47. Indeed, weeping, she will contemplate his birth, childhood, youth, his righteous actions (dharma), and his beauty, that of the great-souled one.
निराशा निहते पुत्रे दत्त्वा श्राद्धमचेतना ।
अग्निमारोक्ष्यते नूनमपो वापि प्रवेक्ष्यति ॥४८॥
48. nirāśā nihate putre dattvā śrāddhamacetanā ,
agnimārokṣyate nūnamapo vāpi pravekṣyati.
48. nirāśā nihate putre dattvā śrāddham acetanā
agnim ārokṣyate nūnam apaḥ vā api pravekṣyati
48. putre nihate nirāśā acetanā śrāddham dattvā (sā)
nūnam agnim ārokṣyate vā api apaḥ pravekṣyati
48. Having lost all hope after her son's death, and after performing the funeral rites (śrāddha), she, being senseless with grief, will surely ascend the funeral pyre or enter the waters.
धिगस्तु कुब्जामसतीं मन्थरां पापनिश्चयाम् ।
यन्निमित्तमिदं दुःखं कौसल्या प्रतिपत्स्यते ॥४९॥
49. dhigastu kubjāmasatīṃ mantharāṃ pāpaniścayām ,
yannimittamidaṃ duḥkhaṃ kausalyā pratipatsyate.
49. dhik astu kubjām asatīm mantharām pāpaniścayām
yat nimittam idam duḥkham kausalyā pratipatṣyate
49. (saḥ vadati) dhik astu kubjām asatīm mantharām pāpaniścayām
yat nimittam kausalyā idam duḥkham pratipatṣyate
49. Shame be upon the hunchbacked, wicked Mantharā, who is of evil resolve! It is on account of her that Kausalya will experience this profound sorrow.
इत्येवं मैथिलीं दृष्ट्वा विलपन्तीं तपस्विनीम् ।
रोहिणीमिव चन्द्रेण विना ग्रहवशं गताम् ॥५०॥
50. ityevaṃ maithilīṃ dṛṣṭvā vilapantīṃ tapasvinīm ,
rohiṇīmiva candreṇa vinā grahavaśaṃ gatām.
50. iti evam maithilīm dṛṣṭvā vilapantīm tapasvinīm
rohiṇīm iva candreṇa vinā grahavaśam gatām
50. (saḥ) iti evam maithilīm vilapantīm tapasvinīm
candreṇa vinā grahavaśam gatām rohiṇīm iva dṛṣṭvā
50. Having seen Maithilī (Sītā) thus lamenting, a sorrowful woman, fallen under the sway of misfortune (grahavasa) like the star Rohiṇī without the moon.
सुपार्श्वो नाम मेधावी रावणं राक्षसेश्वरम् ।
निवार्यमाणं सचिवैरिदं वचनमब्रवीत् ॥५१॥
51. supārśvo nāma medhāvī rāvaṇaṃ rākṣaseśvaram ,
nivāryamāṇaṃ sacivairidaṃ vacanamabravīt.

nivāryamāṇam sacivaiḥ idam vacanam abravīt
51. nāma medhāvī supārśvaḥ sacivaiḥ nivāryamāṇam

51. Then Supārśva, a wise minister, addressed Rāvaṇa, the lord of the rākṣasas, who was at that moment being restrained by his other advisors, with these words.
कथं नाम दशग्रीव साक्षाद्वैश्रवणानुज ।
हन्तुमिच्छसि वैदेहीं क्रोधाद्धर्ममपास्य हि ॥५२॥
52. kathaṃ nāma daśagrīva sākṣādvaiśravaṇānuja ,
hantumicchasi vaidehīṃ krodhāddharmamapāsya hi.
52. katham nāma daśagrīva sākṣāt vaiśravaṇānuja
hantum icchasi vaidehīm krodhāt dharmam apāsya hi
52. daśagrīva vaiśravaṇānuja katham nāma vaidehīm
hantum icchasi krodhāt dharmam apāsya hi
52. O Daśagrīva, younger brother of Vaiśravaṇa himself, how can you truly wish to kill Vaidehī out of anger, having indeed abandoned your duty (dharma)?
वेद विद्याव्रत स्नातः स्वधर्मनिरतः सदा ।
स्त्रियाः कस्माद्वधं वीर मन्यसे राक्षसेश्वर ॥५३॥
53. veda vidyāvrata snātaḥ svadharmanirataḥ sadā ,
striyāḥ kasmādvadhaṃ vīra manyase rākṣaseśvara.

striyāḥ kasmāt vadham vīra manyase rākṣaseśvara

53. O hero, O lord of rākṣasas, you who have completed your Vedic studies and vows, and are always devoted to your own duty (svadharma), why do you consider the killing of a woman?
मैथिलीं रूपसंपन्नां प्रत्यवेक्षस्व पार्थिव ।
त्वमेव तु सहास्माभी राघवे क्रोधमुत्सृज ॥५४॥
54. maithilīṃ rūpasaṃpannāṃ pratyavekṣasva pārthiva ,
tvameva tu sahāsmābhī rāghave krodhamutsṛja.
54. maithilīm rūpasaṃpannām pratyavekṣasva pārthiva
tvam eva tu saha asmābhiḥ rāghave krodham utsṛja
54. pārthiva rūpasaṃpannām maithilīm pratyavekṣasva

54. O king, consider Maithilī, who is endowed with beauty. Indeed, you yourself, along with us, should abandon your anger towards Rāghava.
अभ्युत्थानं त्वमद्यैव कृष्णपक्षचतुर्दशीम् ।
कृत्वा निर्याह्यमावास्यां विजयाय बलैर्वृतः ॥५५॥
55. abhyutthānaṃ tvamadyaiva kṛṣṇapakṣacaturdaśīm ,
kṛtvā niryāhyamāvāsyāṃ vijayāya balairvṛtaḥ.
55. abhyutthānam tvam adya eva kṛṣṇapakṣacaturdaśīm
kṛtvā niryāhi amāvāsyām vijayāya balaiḥ vṛtaḥ
55. tvam adya eva kṛṣṇapakṣacaturdaśīm abhyutthānam
kṛtvā balaiḥ vṛtaḥ amāvāsyām vijayāya niryāhi
55. You, today itself, having made preparations for the expedition on the fourteenth day of the dark fortnight, should set forth on the new moon day, surrounded by your forces, for victory.
शूरो धीमान् रथी खड्गी रथप्रवरमास्थितः ।
हत्वा दाशरथिं रामं भवान्प्राप्स्यति मैथिलीम् ॥५६॥
56. śūro dhīmān rathī khaḍgī rathapravaramāsthitaḥ ,
hatvā dāśarathiṃ rāmaṃ bhavānprāpsyati maithilīm.
56. śūraḥ dhīmān rathī khaḍgī ratha-pravaram āsthitaḥ
hatvā dāśarathim rāmam bhavān prāpsyati maithilīm
56. bhavān śūraḥ dhīmān rathī khaḍgī ratha-pravaram āsthitaḥ dāśarathim rāmam hatvā maithilīm prāpsyati.
56. You, being brave, intelligent, a charioteer, and a swordsman seated on the finest chariot, will obtain Maithilī after killing Rāma, the son of Daśaratha.
स तद्दुरात्मा सुहृदा निवेदितं वचः सुधर्म्यं प्रतिगृह्य रावणः ।
गृहं जगामाथ ततश्च वीर्यवान्पुनः सभां च प्रययौ सुहृद्वृतः ॥५७॥
57. sa taddurātmā suhṛdā niveditaṃ vacaḥ sudharmyaṃ pratigṛhya rāvaṇaḥ ,
gṛhaṃ jagāmātha tataśca vīryavānpunaḥ sabhāṃ ca prayayau suhṛdvṛtaḥ.
57. saḥ tat durātmā suhṛdā niveditam
vacaḥ su-dharmyam pratigṛhya rāvaṇaḥ
gṛham jagāma atha tataḥ ca vīryavān
punaḥ sabhām ca prayayau suhṛt-vṛtaḥ
57. saḥ durātmā rāvaṇaḥ suhṛdā niveditam tat su-dharmyam vacaḥ pratigṛhya gṛham jagāma.
atha tataḥ ca vīryavān punaḥ ca suhṛt-vṛtaḥ sabhām prayayau.
57. Having accepted those very righteous words conveyed by his friend, the wicked-souled Rāvaṇa went to his home. And then, the powerful one again proceeded to the assembly hall, surrounded by his friends.
