हन्यमाने बले तस्मिन्पद्मनाभेन पृष्ठतः ।
माल्यवान् संनिवृत्तो ऽथ वेलातिग इवार्णवः ॥१॥

1. As that army was being assailed from behind by Padmanābha, Mālyavān then retreated, like an ocean overflowing its boundaries.
संरक्तनयनः कोपाच्चलन्मौलिर्निशाचरः ।
पद्मनाभमिदं प्राह वचनं परुषं तदा ॥२॥
2. saṃraktanayanaḥ kopāccalanmaulirniśācaraḥ ,
padmanābhamidaṃ prāha vacanaṃ paruṣaṃ tadā.
2. saṃraktanayanaḥ kopāt calanmauliḥ niśācaraḥ
padmanābham idam prāha vacanam paruṣam tadā

2. Then, the night-wanderer (niśācara), with eyes red from anger and a trembling crown, spoke these harsh words to Padmanābha.
नारायण न जानीषे क्षत्रधर्मं सनातनम् ।
अयुद्धमनसो भग्नान्यो ऽस्मान् हंसि यथेतरः ॥३॥
3. nārāyaṇa na jānīṣe kṣatradharmaṃ sanātanam ,
ayuddhamanaso bhagnānyo'smān haṃsi yathetaraḥ.

ayuddhamanasaḥ bhagnān anyaḥ asmān haṃsi yathā itaraḥ
3. nārāyaṇa sanātanam kṣatradharmam na jānīṣe

3. O Nārāyaṇa, you do not know the eternal warrior's code (kṣatradharma). You are killing us, who are defeated and disinclined to fight, just like any ordinary foe.
पराङ्मुखवधं पापं यः करोति सुरेश्वर ।
स हन्ता न गतः स्वर्गं लभते पुण्यकर्मणाम् ॥४॥
4. parāṅmukhavadhaṃ pāpaṃ yaḥ karoti sureśvara ,
sa hantā na gataḥ svargaṃ labhate puṇyakarmaṇām.

hantā na gataḥ svargam labhate puṇyakarmaṇām
4. sureśvara yaḥ parāṅmukhvadham pāpam karoti saḥ

4. O lord of gods, whoever commits the sin of killing a fleeing person, that killer does not reach heaven nor obtain the rewards of those with meritorious deeds.
युद्धश्रद्धाथ वा ते ऽस्ति शङ्खचक्रगदाधर ।
अहं स्थितो ऽस्मि पश्यामि बलं दर्शय यत्तव ॥५॥
5. yuddhaśraddhātha vā te'sti śaṅkhacakragadādhara ,
ahaṃ sthito'smi paśyāmi balaṃ darśaya yattava.

aham sthitaḥ asmi paśyāmi balam darśaya yat tava

5. O holder of conch, discus, and mace (śaṅkhacakragadādhara)! If you have a desire (śraddhā) for battle, I stand ready. Show whatever strength you possess; I am watching.
उवाच राक्षसेन्द्रं तं देवराजानुजो बली ।
युष्मत्तो भयभीतानां देवानां वै मयाभयम् ।
राक्षसोत्सादनं दत्तं तदेतदनुपाल्यते ॥६॥
6. uvāca rākṣasendraṃ taṃ devarājānujo balī ,
yuṣmatto bhayabhītānāṃ devānāṃ vai mayābhayam ,
rākṣasotsādanaṃ dattaṃ tadetadanupālyate.
6. uvāca rākṣasendram tam devarājānujaḥ
balī yuṣmattaḥ bhayabhītānām
devānām vai mayā abhayam rākṣasotsādanam
dattam tat etat anupālyate

6. The mighty younger brother of the king of gods said to that lord of rākṣasas: 'Indeed, an assurance of safety and the destruction of rākṣasas was given by me to the gods, who were terrified by you. That is now being fulfilled.'
प्राणैरपि प्रियं कार्यं देवानां हि सदा मया ।
सो ऽहं वो निहनिष्यामि रसातलगतानपि ॥७॥
7. prāṇairapi priyaṃ kāryaṃ devānāṃ hi sadā mayā ,
so'haṃ vo nihaniṣyāmi rasātalagatānapi.
7. prāṇaiḥ api priyam kāryam devānām hi sadā mayā
saḥ aham vaḥ nihaniṣyāmi rasātalagatān api
7. mayā prāṇaiḥ api devānām priyam kāryam hi sadā
saḥ aham vaḥ rasātalagatān api nihaniṣyāmi
7. Even at the cost of my life, I must always accomplish what is dear to the gods. Therefore, I will indeed strike you down, even if you have fled to the netherworld (rasātala).
देवमेवं ब्रुवाणं तु रक्ताम्बुरुहलोचनम् ।
शक्त्या बिभेद संक्रुद्धो राक्षसेन्द्रो ररास च ॥८॥
8. devamevaṃ bruvāṇaṃ tu raktāmburuhalocanam ,
śaktyā bibheda saṃkruddho rākṣasendro rarāsa ca.
8. devam evam bruvāṇam tu raktāmburuhalocanam śaktyā
bibheda saṃkruddhaḥ rākṣasendraḥ rarāsa ca
8. tu saṃkruddhaḥ rākṣasendraḥ evam bruvāṇam
raktāmburuhalocanam devam śaktyā bibheda ca rarāsa
8. But the king of rākṣasas (rākṣasendra), enraged, pierced the deity - who spoke thus and whose eyes were like red lotuses - with a spear (śakti), and then he roared.
माल्यवद्भुजनिर्मुक्ता शक्तिर्घण्टाकृतस्वना ।
हरेरुरसि बभ्राज मेघस्थेव शतह्रदा ॥९॥
9. mālyavadbhujanirmuktā śaktirghaṇṭākṛtasvanā ,
harerurasi babhrāja meghastheva śatahradā.
9. mālyavadhujanimuktā śaktiḥ ghaṇṭākṛtasvanā
hareḥ urasi babhrāja meghasthā iva śatahṛdā
9. mālyavadhujanimuktā ghaṇṭākṛtasvanā śaktiḥ

9. The spear (śakti) released from Mālyavat's arm, making a bell-like sound, shone on Hari's chest like a hundred flashes of lightning (śatahṛdā) in a cloud.
ततस्तामेव चोत्कृष्य शक्तिं शक्तिधरप्रियः ।
माल्यवन्तं समुद्दिश्य चिक्षेपाम्बुरुहेक्षणः ॥१०॥
10. tatastāmeva cotkṛṣya śaktiṃ śaktidharapriyaḥ ,
mālyavantaṃ samuddiśya cikṣepāmburuhekṣaṇaḥ.
10. tataḥ tām eva ca utkṛṣya śaktim śaktidharapriyaḥ
mālyavantam samudiśya cikṣepa amburuhekṣaṇaḥ
10. tataḥ ca śaktidharapriyaḥ amburuhekṣaṇaḥ tām
eva śaktim utkṛṣya mālyavantam samudiśya cikṣepa
10. Then, the lotus-eyed deity, beloved of the wielder of the spear (śakti-dhara-priya), pulled out that very spear and hurled it, aiming at Mālyavat.
स्कन्दोत्सृष्टेव सा शक्तिर्गोविन्दकरनिःसृता ।
काङ्क्षन्ती राक्षसं प्रायान्महोल्केवाञ्जनाचलम् ॥११॥
11. skandotsṛṣṭeva sā śaktirgovindakaraniḥsṛtā ,
kāṅkṣantī rākṣasaṃ prāyānmaholkevāñjanācalam.
11. skanda utsṛṣṭā iva sā śaktiḥ govinda kara niḥsṛtā
kāṅkṣantī rākṣasam prāyāt mahā ulkā iva añjana acalam
11. sā govinda kara niḥsṛtā skanda utsṛṣṭā iva śaktiḥ
kāṅkṣantī rākṣasam prāyāt mahā ulkā iva añjana acalam
11. That spear (śakti), released from Govinda's hand as if hurled by Skanda, flew towards the demon, just like a great meteor approaching Mount Añjana.
सा तस्योरसि विस्तीर्णे हारभासावभासिते ।
अपतद् राक्षसेन्द्रस्य गिरिकूट इवाशनिः ॥१२॥
12. sā tasyorasi vistīrṇe hārabhāsāvabhāsite ,
apatad rākṣasendrasya girikūṭa ivāśaniḥ.
12. sā tasya urasi vistīrṇe hāra bhāsā avabhāsite
apatat rākṣasa indrasya giri kūṭa iva aśaniḥ
12. sā rākṣasa indrasya tasya vistīrṇe hāra bhāsā
avabhāsite urasi apatat aśaniḥ giri kūṭa iva
12. That spear fell upon the broad chest of the lord of demons, which was illuminated by the luster of his necklace, just as a thunderbolt strikes a mountain peak.
तया भिन्नतनुत्राणाः प्राविशद्विपुलं तमः ।
माल्यवान्पुनराश्वस्तस्तस्थौ गिरिरिवाचलः ॥१३॥
13. tayā bhinnatanutrāṇāḥ prāviśadvipulaṃ tamaḥ ,
mālyavānpunarāśvastastasthau giririvācalaḥ.
13. tayā bhinna tanu trāṇāḥ prāviśat vipulam tamaḥ
mālyavān punaḥ āśvastaḥ tasthau giriḥ iva acalaḥ
13. tayā bhinna tanu trāṇāḥ prāviśat vipulam tamaḥ
mālyavān punaḥ āśvastaḥ giriḥ iva acalaḥ tasthau
13. His armor shattered by that spear, he plunged into a great darkness. Mālyavān, however, soon recovered and stood firm like an immovable mountain.
ततः कार्ष्णायसं शूलं कण्टकैर्बहुभिश्चितम् ।
प्रगृह्याभ्यहनद्देवं स्तनयोरन्तरे दृढम् ॥१४॥
14. tataḥ kārṣṇāyasaṃ śūlaṃ kaṇṭakairbahubhiścitam ,
pragṛhyābhyahanaddevaṃ stanayorantare dṛḍham.
14. tataḥ kārṣṇa āyasam śūlam kaṇṭakaiḥ bahubhiḥ citam
pragṛhya abhyahanat devam stanayoḥ antare dṛḍham
14. tataḥ bahubhiḥ kaṇṭakaiḥ citam kārṣṇa āyasam śūlam
pragṛhya stanayoḥ antare devam dṛḍham abhyahanat
14. Then, taking up a black iron spear (śūla) studded with many sharp points, he firmly struck the deity between the breasts.
तथैव रणरक्तस्तु मुष्टिना वासवानुजम् ।
ताडयित्वा धनुर्मात्रमपक्रान्तो निशाचरः ॥१५॥
15. tathaiva raṇaraktastu muṣṭinā vāsavānujam ,
tāḍayitvā dhanurmātramapakrānto niśācaraḥ.
15. tathā eva raṇaraktaḥ tu muṣṭinā vāsavānujam
tāḍayitvā dhanurmātram apakrāntaḥ niśācaraḥ
15. And similarly, the demon (niśācara), enraged by battle, struck Viṣṇu (vāsavānuja) with his fist and then retreated just a bow's length away.
ततो ऽम्बरे महाञ् शब्दः साधु साध्विति चोत्थितः ।
आहत्य राक्षसो विष्णुं गरुडं चाप्यताडयत् ॥१६॥
16. tato'mbare mahāñ śabdaḥ sādhu sādhviti cotthitaḥ ,
āhatya rākṣaso viṣṇuṃ garuḍaṃ cāpyatāḍayat.
16. tataḥ ambare mahān śabdaḥ sādhu sādhu iti ca utthitaḥ
āhatya rākṣasaḥ viṣṇum garuḍam ca api atāḍayat
16. Then, a great cry of 'Excellent! Excellent!' arose in the sky. The demon (rākṣasa), having struck Viṣṇu, also struck Garuḍa.
वैनतेयस्ततः क्रुद्धः पक्षवातेन राक्षसं ।
व्यपोहद्बलवान् वायुः शुष्कपर्णचयं यथा ॥१७॥
17. vainateyastataḥ kruddhaḥ pakṣavātena rākṣasaṃ ,
vyapohadbalavān vāyuḥ śuṣkaparṇacayaṃ yathā.
17. vainateyaḥ tataḥ kruddhaḥ pakṣavātena rākṣasam
vyapōhat balavān vāyuḥ śuṣkaparṇacayam yathā
17. Then, the enraged Garuḍa, with the strong wind from his wings, swept away the demon (rākṣasa) just as a powerful wind disperses a pile of dry leaves.
द्विजेन्द्रपक्षवातेन द्रावितं दृश्य पूर्वजम् ।
सुमाली स्वबलैः सार्धं लङ्कामभिमुखो ययौ ॥१८॥
18. dvijendrapakṣavātena drāvitaṃ dṛśya pūrvajam ,
sumālī svabalaiḥ sārdhaṃ laṅkāmabhimukho yayau.
18. dvijendrapakṣavātena drāvitam dṛśya pūrvajam
sumālī svabalaiḥ sārdham laṅkām abhimukhaḥ yayau
18. Having seen the elder demon driven away by the wind from the wings of the lord of birds (dvijendra), Sumāli, along with his own forces, went towards Laṅkā.
पक्षवातबलोद्धूतो माल्यवानपि राक्षसः ।
स्वबलेन समागम्य ययौ लङ्कां ह्रिया वृतः ॥१९॥
19. pakṣavātabaloddhūto mālyavānapi rākṣasaḥ ,
svabalena samāgamya yayau laṅkāṃ hriyā vṛtaḥ.
19. pakṣavātabaloddhūtaḥ mālyavān api rākṣasaḥ
svabalena samāgamya yayau laṅkām hriyā vṛtaḥ
19. mālyavān rākṣasaḥ api pakṣavātabaloddhūtaḥ
svabalena samāgamya hriyā vṛtaḥ laṅkām yayau
19. Even the rākṣasa Mālyavān, agitated by the force of wind from wings, gathered his own army and returned to Laṅkā, overcome with shame.
एवं ते राक्षसा राम हरिणा कमलेक्षण ।
बहुशः संयुगे भग्ना हतप्रवरनायकाः ॥२०॥
20. evaṃ te rākṣasā rāma hariṇā kamalekṣaṇa ,
bahuśaḥ saṃyuge bhagnā hatapravaranāyakāḥ.
20. evam te rākṣasāḥ rāma hariṇā kamalekṣaṇa
bahuśaḥ saṃyuge bhagnāḥ hatapravaranāyakāḥ
20. rāma kamalekṣaṇa evam te rākṣasāḥ hariṇā
saṃyuge bahuśaḥ hatapravaranāyakāḥ bhagnāḥ
20. O Rāma, O lotus-eyed one (kamalekṣaṇa)! In this manner, those rākṣasas were repeatedly defeated in battle by Hari, with their prominent leaders slain.
अशक्नुवन्तस्ते विष्णुं प्रतियोद्धुं भयार्दिताः ।
त्यक्त्वा लङ्कां गता वस्तुं पातालं सहपत्नयः ॥२१॥
21. aśaknuvantaste viṣṇuṃ pratiyoddhuṃ bhayārditāḥ ,
tyaktvā laṅkāṃ gatā vastuṃ pātālaṃ sahapatnayaḥ.
21. aśaknuvantaḥ te viṣṇum pratiyoddhum bhayārditāḥ
tyaktvā laṅkām gatāḥ vastum pātālam sahapatnayaḥ
21. te aśaknuvantaḥ bhayārditāḥ viṣṇum pratiyoddhum
laṅkām tyaktvā sahapatnayaḥ pātālam vastum gatāḥ
21. Unable to fight against Viṣṇu, and distressed by fear, they abandoned Laṅkā and went to reside in Pātāla along with their wives.
सुमालिनं समासाद्य राक्षसं रघुनन्दन ।
स्थिताः प्रख्यातवीर्यास्ते वंशे सालकटङ्कटे ॥२२॥
22. sumālinaṃ samāsādya rākṣasaṃ raghunandana ,
sthitāḥ prakhyātavīryāste vaṃśe sālakaṭaṅkaṭe.
22. sumālinam samāsādya rākṣasam raghunandana
sthitāḥ prakhyātavīryāḥ te vaṃśe sālakaṭaṅkaṭe
22. raghunandana sumālinam rākṣasam samāsādya
prakhyātavīryāḥ te sālakaṭaṅkaṭe vaṃśe sthitāḥ
22. O descendant of Raghu (raghunandana)! Having reached the rākṣasa Sumālin, those whose valor was renowned remained in the Sālakaṭaṅkaṭa lineage.
ये त्वया निहतास्ते वै पौलस्त्या नाम राक्षसाः ।
सुमाली माल्यवान्माली ये च तेषां पुरःसराः ।
सर्व एते महाभाग रावणाद्बलवत्तराः ॥२३॥
23. ye tvayā nihatāste vai paulastyā nāma rākṣasāḥ ,
sumālī mālyavānmālī ye ca teṣāṃ puraḥsarāḥ ,
sarva ete mahābhāga rāvaṇādbalavattarāḥ.
23. ye tvayā nihatāḥ te vai paulaslyā
nāma rākṣasāḥ sumālī mālyavān mālī
ye ca teṣām puraḥsarāḥ sarve
ete mahābhāga rāvaṇāt balavattarāḥ
23. mahābhāga,
ye paulaslyā nāma rākṣasāḥ sumālī mālyavān mālī ca ye teṣām puraḥsarāḥ tvayā nihatāḥ,
te sarve ete vai rāvaṇāt balavattarāḥ
23. Indeed, those demons named Paulastyas, who were killed by you – Sumālī, Mālyavān, and Mālī, along with their leaders – all these, O greatly fortunate one, were stronger than Rāvaṇa.
न चान्यो रक्षसां हन्ता सुरेष्वपि पुरंजय ।
ऋते नारायणं देवं शङ्खचक्रगदाधरम् ॥२४॥
24. na cānyo rakṣasāṃ hantā sureṣvapi puraṃjaya ,
ṛte nārāyaṇaṃ devaṃ śaṅkhacakragadādharam.
24. na ca anyaḥ rakṣasām hantā sureṣu api purañjaya
ṛte nārāyaṇam devam śaṅkhacakragadādharam
24. puranjaya,
rakṣasām hantā anyaḥ ca na sureṣu api ṛte devam nārāyaṇam śaṅkhacakragadādharam
24. And there is no other slayer of demons, O conqueror of cities, even among the gods, except for the divine Nārāyaṇa, who holds the conch, discus, and mace.
भवान्नारायणो देवश्चतुर्बाहुः सनातनः ।
राक्षसान् हन्तुमुत्पन्नो अजेयः प्रभुरव्ययः ॥२५॥
25. bhavānnārāyaṇo devaścaturbāhuḥ sanātanaḥ ,
rākṣasān hantumutpanno ajeyaḥ prabhuravyayaḥ.
25. bhavān nārāyaṇaḥ devaḥ caturbāhuḥ sanātanaḥ
rākṣasān hantum utpannaḥ ajeyaḥ prabhuḥ avyayaḥ
25. bhavān nārāyaṇaḥ devaḥ caturbāhuḥ sanātanaḥ
rākṣasān hantum utpannaḥ ajeyaḥ prabhuḥ avyayaḥ
25. You are the divine Nārāyaṇa, four-armed and eternal, born to kill the demons; you are unconquerable, the Lord, and imperishable.
