अपश्यंस्तु ततस्तत्र पितरं पितुरालये ।
जगाम भरतो द्रष्टुं मातरं मातुरालये ॥१॥
1. apaśyaṃstu tatastatra pitaraṃ piturālaye ,
jagāma bharato draṣṭuṃ mātaraṃ māturālaye.

1. But failing to see his father there in his father's house, Bharata then went to see his mother in his mother's house.
अनुप्राप्तं तु तं दृष्ट्वा कैकेयी प्रोषितं सुतम् ।
उत्पपात तदा हृष्टा त्यक्त्वा सौवर्णमानसं ॥२॥
2. anuprāptaṃ tu taṃ dṛṣṭvā kaikeyī proṣitaṃ sutam ,
utpapāta tadā hṛṣṭā tyaktvā sauvarṇamānasaṃ.

2. But when Kaikeyi saw her son (Bharata), who had returned from his journey, delighted, she then sprang up, having abandoned her golden seat.
स प्रविश्यैव धर्मात्मा स्वगृहं श्रीविवर्जितम् ।
भरतः प्रेक्ष्य जग्राह जनन्याश्चरणौ शुभौ ॥३॥
3. sa praviśyaiva dharmātmā svagṛhaṃ śrīvivarjitam ,
bharataḥ prekṣya jagrāha jananyāścaraṇau śubhau.
3. saḥ praviśya eva dharmātmā svagṛham śrīvivarjitam
bharataḥ prekṣya jagrāha jananyāḥ caraṇau śubhāu
3. dharmātmā bharataḥ saḥ śrīvivarjitam svagṛham

3. The righteous (dharmātmā) Bharata, upon entering his own house, which was devoid of splendor, saw his mother and grasped her auspicious feet.
तं मूर्ध्नि समुपाघ्राय परिष्वज्य यशस्विनम् ।
अङ्के भरतमारोप्य प्रष्टुं समुपचक्रमे ॥४॥
4. taṃ mūrdhni samupāghrāya pariṣvajya yaśasvinam ,
aṅke bharatamāropya praṣṭuṃ samupacakrame.

4. Having kissed him on the head, embraced the glorious Bharata, and placed him on her lap, she began to question him.
अद्य ते कति चिद् रात्र्यश्च्युतस्यार्यकवेश्मनः ।
अपि नाध्वश्रमः शीघ्रं रथेनापततस्तव ॥५॥
5. adya te kati cid rātryaścyutasyāryakaveśmanaḥ ,
api nādhvaśramaḥ śīghraṃ rathenāpatatastava.
5. adya te kati cit rātryaḥ cyutasya āryakaveśmanaḥ
api na adhvaśramaḥ śīghram rathena āpatataḥ tava
5. adya te āryakaveśmanaḥ cyutasya katicit rātryaḥ?
api tava rathena śīghram āpatataḥ adhvaśramaḥ na?
5. How many nights has it been today since you departed from your maternal grandfather's house? Did you not suffer from journey fatigue (adhvaśrama), even though you quickly came by chariot?
आर्यकस्ते सुकुशलो युधाजिन्मातुलस्तव ।
प्रवासाच्च सुखं पुत्र सर्वं मे वक्तुमर्हसि ॥६॥
6. āryakaste sukuśalo yudhājinmātulastava ,
pravāsācca sukhaṃ putra sarvaṃ me vaktumarhasi.
6. āryakaḥ te sukuśalaḥ yudhājit mātulaḥ tava
pravāsāt ca sukham putra sarvam me vaktum arhasi
6. putra te āryakaḥ sukuśalaḥ? tava mātulaḥ yudhājit? ca pravāsāt sukham? sarvam me vaktum arhasi.
6. O son, is your maternal grandfather well? Is your maternal uncle Yudhājit well? And you should tell me everything about your well-being from the journey.
एवं पृष्ठस्तु कैकेय्या प्रियं पार्थिवनन्दनः ।
आचष्ट भरतः सर्वं मात्रे राजीवलोचनः ॥७॥
7. evaṃ pṛṣṭhastu kaikeyyā priyaṃ pārthivanandanaḥ ,
ācaṣṭa bharataḥ sarvaṃ mātre rājīvalocanaḥ.
7. evam pṛṣṭaḥ tu kaikeyyā priyam pārthivanandanaḥ
ācaṣṭa bharataḥ sarvam mātre rājīvalocanaḥ

7. Thus questioned by Kaikeyī, the lotus-eyed son of the king, Bharata, kindly told everything to his mother.
अद्य मे सप्तमी रात्रिश्च्युतस्यार्यकवेश्मनः ।
अम्बायाः कुशली तातो युधाजिन्मातुलश्च मे ॥८॥
8. adya me saptamī rātriścyutasyāryakaveśmanaḥ ,
ambāyāḥ kuśalī tāto yudhājinmātulaśca me.
8. adya me saptamī rātriḥ cyutasya āryakaveśmanaḥ
ambāyāḥ kuśalī tātaḥ yudhājit mātulaḥ ca me
8. adya me āryakaveśmanaḥ cyutasya saptamī rātriḥ

8. Today is my seventh night since I departed from my grandfather's house. My mother's father (maternal grandfather), Yudhājit, is well, and my maternal uncle is also well.
यन्मे धनं च रत्नं च ददौ राजा परंतपः ।
परिश्रान्तं पथ्यभवत्ततो ऽहं पूर्वमागतः ॥९॥
9. yanme dhanaṃ ca ratnaṃ ca dadau rājā paraṃtapaḥ ,
pariśrāntaṃ pathyabhavattato'haṃ pūrvamāgataḥ.
9. yat me dhanam ca ratnam ca dadau rājā paraṃtapaḥ
pariśrāntam pathyam abhavat tataḥ aham pūrvam āgataḥ
9. paraṃtapaḥ rājā yat dhanam ca ratnam ca me dadau (tat)
pariśrāntam pathyam abhavat tataḥ aham pūrvam āgataḥ
9. The king, tormentor of foes, gave me wealth and jewels. When exhausted, these became useful provisions. Therefore, I arrived earlier.
राजवाक्यहरैर्दूतैस्त्वर्यमाणो ऽहमागतः ।
यदहं प्रष्टुमिच्छामि तदम्बा वक्तुमर्हसि ॥१०॥
10. rājavākyaharairdūtaistvaryamāṇo'hamāgataḥ ,
yadahaṃ praṣṭumicchāmi tadambā vaktumarhasi.
10. rājavākyaharaiḥ dūtaiḥ tvaryamāṇaḥ aham āgataḥ
yat aham praṣṭum icchāmi tat ambā vaktum arhasi
10. rājavākyaharaiḥ dūtaiḥ tvaryamāṇaḥ aham āgataḥ
ambā! yat aham praṣṭum icchāmi tat vaktum arhasi
10. I arrived, having been hurried by messengers carrying the king's command. Mother, you ought to tell me what I wish to ask.
शून्यो ऽयं शयनीयस्ते पर्यङ्को हेमभूषितः ।
न चायमिक्ष्वाकुजनः प्रहृष्टः प्रतिभाति मे ॥११॥
11. śūnyo'yaṃ śayanīyaste paryaṅko hemabhūṣitaḥ ,
na cāyamikṣvākujanaḥ prahṛṣṭaḥ pratibhāti me.
11. śūnyaḥ ayam śayanīyaḥ te paryaṅkaḥ hemabhūṣitaḥ
na ca ayam ikṣvāku-janaḥ prahṛṣṭaḥ pratibhāti me
11. ayam te hemabhūṣitaḥ paryaṅkaḥ śayanīyaḥ śūnyaḥ
ca ayam ikṣvāku-janaḥ me prahṛṣṭaḥ na pratibhāti
11. This gold-adorned couch of yours is empty. And these Ikṣvāku people do not appear joyful to me.
राजा भवति भूयिष्ठमिहाम्बाया निवेशने ।
तमहं नाद्य पश्यामि द्रष्टुमिच्छन्निहागतः ॥१२॥
12. rājā bhavati bhūyiṣṭhamihāmbāyā niveśane ,
tamahaṃ nādya paśyāmi draṣṭumicchannihāgataḥ.
12. rājā bhavati bhūyiṣṭham iha ambāyāḥ niveśane tam
aham na adya paśyāmi draṣṭum icchan iha āgataḥ
12. rājā bhūyiṣṭham iha ambāyāḥ niveśane bhavati aham
tam draṣṭum icchan iha āgataḥ adya na paśyāmi
12. The king is usually here, in Mother's abode. But I, having come here wishing to see him, do not see him today.
पितुर्ग्रहीष्ये चरणौ तं ममाख्याहि पृच्छतः ।
आहोस्विदम्ब ज्येष्ठायाः कौसल्याया निवेशने ॥१३॥
13. piturgrahīṣye caraṇau taṃ mamākhyāhi pṛcchataḥ ,
āhosvidamba jyeṣṭhāyāḥ kausalyāyā niveśane.
13. pituḥ grahīṣye caraṇau tam mama ākhyāhi pṛcchataḥ
āhosvit amba jyeṣṭhāyāḥ kausalyāyāḥ niveśane
13. aham pituḥ caraṇau grahīṣye pṛcchataḥ mama tam
ākhyāhi āhosvit amba jyeṣṭhāyāḥ kausalyāyāḥ niveśane
13. I will touch my father's feet. Please tell me about him, since I am asking. Or is he, O mother, in the abode of the elder Kausalyā?
तं प्रत्युवाच कैकेयी प्रियवद्घोरमप्रियम् ।
अजानन्तं प्रजानन्ती राज्यलोभेन मोहिता ।
या गतिः सर्वभूतानां तां गतिं ते पिता गतः ॥१४॥
14. taṃ pratyuvāca kaikeyī priyavadghoramapriyam ,
ajānantaṃ prajānantī rājyalobhena mohitā ,
yā gatiḥ sarvabhūtānāṃ tāṃ gatiṃ te pitā gataḥ.
14. tam pratyuvāca kaikeyī priyavat
ghoram apriyam ajānantam prajānantī
rājyalobhena mohitā yā gatiḥ
sarvabhūtānām tām gatim te pitā gataḥ
14. rājyalobhena mohitā kaikeyī ajānantam
tam prajānantī priyavat ghoram
apriyam pratyuvāca te pitā yā
sarvabhūtānām gatim tām gatim gataḥ
14. Kaikeyī, deluded by greed for the kingdom, replied to him - who was unaware - with a terrible and unpleasant speech, though it sounded affectionate. She said: 'Your father has met the same fate (gati) that all beings inevitably face.'
तच्छ्रुत्वा भरतो वाक्यं धर्माभिजनवाञ् शुचिः ।
पपात सहसा भूमौ पितृशोकबलार्दितः ॥१५॥
15. tacchrutvā bharato vākyaṃ dharmābhijanavāñ śuciḥ ,
papāta sahasā bhūmau pitṛśokabalārditaḥ.
15. tat śrutvā bharataḥ vākyam dharmābhijanavān
śuciḥ papāta sahasā bhūmau pitṛśokabalārditaḥ
15. bharataḥ śuciḥ dharmābhijanavān tat vākyam
śrutvā pitṛśokabalārditaḥ sahasā bhūmau papāta
15. Hearing that statement, Bharata, pure and possessing a noble lineage (dharma), suddenly fell to the ground, overwhelmed by the intense sorrow for his father.
ततः शोकेन संवीतः पितुर्मरणदुःखितः ।
विललाप महातेजा भ्रान्ताकुलितचेतनः ॥१६॥
16. tataḥ śokena saṃvītaḥ piturmaraṇaduḥkhitaḥ ,
vilalāpa mahātejā bhrāntākulitacetanaḥ.
16. tataḥ śokena saṃvītaḥ pituḥ maraṇaduḥkhitaḥ
vilalāpa mahātejaḥ bhrāntākulitacetanaḥ
16. tataḥ saṃvītaḥ śokena pituḥ maraṇaduḥkhitaḥ
mahātejaḥ bhrāntākulitacetanaḥ vilalāpa
16. Then, covered in grief and sorrowful due to his father's death, the greatly energetic Bharata lamented, his consciousness bewildered and agitated.
एतत् सुरुचिरं भाति पितुर्मे शयनं पुरा ।
तदिदं न विभात्यद्य विहीनं तेन धीमता ॥१७॥
17. etat suruciraṃ bhāti piturme śayanaṃ purā ,
tadidaṃ na vibhātyadya vihīnaṃ tena dhīmatā.
17. etat suruciram bhāti pituḥ me śayanam purā
tat idam na vibhāti adya vihīnam tena dhīmatā
17. purā etat suruciram me pituḥ śayanam bhāti
adya tat idam tena dhīmatā vihīnam na vibhāti
17. This bed of my father used to appear exceedingly beautiful before. But now, deprived of that wise one, it no longer shines.
तमार्तं देवसंकाशं समीक्ष्य पतितं भुवि ।
उत्थापयित्वा शोकार्तं वचनं चेदमब्रवीत् ॥१८॥
18. tamārtaṃ devasaṃkāśaṃ samīkṣya patitaṃ bhuvi ,
utthāpayitvā śokārtaṃ vacanaṃ cedamabravīt.
18. tam ārtam devasaṃkāśam samīkṣya patitam bhuvi
utthāpayitvā śokārtam vacanam ca idam abravīt
18. tam ārtam devasaṃkāśam bhuvi patitam samīkṣya
śokārtam utthāpayitvā ca idam vacanam abravīt
18. Seeing him fallen on the ground, distressed and resembling a deity, and having raised that grief-stricken one, he spoke these words.
उत्तिष्ठोत्तिष्ठ किं शेषे राजपुत्र महायशः ।
त्वद्विधा न हि शोचन्ति सन्तः सदसि संमताः ॥१९॥
19. uttiṣṭhottiṣṭha kiṃ śeṣe rājaputra mahāyaśaḥ ,
tvadvidhā na hi śocanti santaḥ sadasi saṃmatāḥ.
19. uttiṣṭha uttiṣṭha kim śeṣe rājaputra mahāyaśas
tvadvidhāḥ na hi śocanti santaḥ sadasi saṃmatāḥ
19. rājaputra mahāyaśas uttiṣṭha uttiṣṭha kim śeṣe
tvadvidhāḥ santaḥ sadasi saṃmatāḥ na hi śocanti
19. Arise, arise! Why are you sleeping, O greatly renowned prince? Indeed, virtuous people like you, who are honored in assemblies, do not grieve.
स रुदत्या चिरं कालं भूमौ विपरिवृत्य च ।
जननीं प्रत्युवाचेदं शोकैर्बहुभिरावृतः ॥२०॥
20. sa rudatyā ciraṃ kālaṃ bhūmau viparivṛtya ca ,
jananīṃ pratyuvācedaṃ śokairbahubhirāvṛtaḥ.
20. saḥ rudatyā ciram kālam bhūmau viparivṛtya ca
jananīm pratyuvāca idam śokaiḥ bahubhiḥ āvṛtaḥ
20. saḥ śokaiḥ bahubhiḥ āvṛtaḥ rudatyā ciram kālam
bhūmau viparivṛtya ca jananīm idam pratyuvāca
20. He, overwhelmed by many sorrows, replied this to his mother, after rolling on the ground for a long time while she was weeping.
अभिषेक्ष्यति रामं तु राजा यज्ञं नु यक्ष्यति ।
इत्यहं कृतसंकल्पो हृष्टो यात्रामयासिषम् ॥२१॥
21. abhiṣekṣyati rāmaṃ tu rājā yajñaṃ nu yakṣyati ,
ityahaṃ kṛtasaṃkalpo hṛṣṭo yātrāmayāsiṣam.
21. abhiṣekṣyati rāmam tu rājā yajñam nu yakṣyati
iti aham kṛtasaṃkalpaḥ hṛṣṭaḥ yātrām ayāsiṣam
21. rājā rāmam abhiṣekṣyati,
tu nu yajñam yakṣyati iti aham kṛtasaṃkalpaḥ hṛṣṭaḥ yātrām ayāsiṣam
21. The king will anoint Rāma, and indeed he will perform a Vedic ritual (yajña). Thus, I, having made this firm resolution and being delighted, set out on my journey.
तदिदं ह्यन्यथा भूतं व्यवदीर्णं मनो मम ।
पितरं यो न पश्यामि नित्यं प्रियहिते रतम् ॥२२॥
22. tadidaṃ hyanyathā bhūtaṃ vyavadīrṇaṃ mano mama ,
pitaraṃ yo na paśyāmi nityaṃ priyahite ratam.
22. tat idam hi anyathā bhūtam vyavadīrṇam manaḥ mama
pitaram yaḥ na paśyāmi nityam priyahite ratam
22. hi tat idam anyathā bhūtam mama manaḥ vyavadīrṇam
yaḥ nityam priyahite ratam pitaram na paśyāmi
22. Indeed, this situation has turned out otherwise, and my mind is shattered. I do not see my father, who was always devoted to my well-being and what was dear to me.
अम्ब केनात्यगाद् राजा व्याधिना मय्यनागते ।
धन्या रामादयः सर्वे यैः पिता संस्कृतः स्वयम् ॥२३॥
23. amba kenātyagād rājā vyādhinā mayyanāgate ,
dhanyā rāmādayaḥ sarve yaiḥ pitā saṃskṛtaḥ svayam.
23. amba kena atyagāt rājā vyādhinā mayi anāgate
dhanyāḥ rāma-ādayaḥ sarve yaiḥ pitā saṃskṛtaḥ svayam
23. amba mayi anāgate rājā kena vyādhinā atyagāt sarve
rāma-ādayaḥ yaiḥ pitā svayam saṃskṛtaḥ dhanyāḥ
23. Mother, by what illness did the king pass away while I was absent? Fortunate are Rama and others, all of whom personally performed the funeral rites (saṃskāra) for their father.
न नूनं मां महाराजः प्राप्तं जानाति कीर्तिमान् ।
उपजिघ्रेद्धि मां मूर्ध्नि तातः संनम्य सत्वरम् ॥२४॥
24. na nūnaṃ māṃ mahārājaḥ prāptaṃ jānāti kīrtimān ,
upajighreddhi māṃ mūrdhni tātaḥ saṃnamya satvaram.
24. na nūnam mām mahā-rājāḥ prāptam jānāti kīrtimān
upajighred dhi mām mūrdhni tātaḥ saṃnamya satvaram
24. nūnam kīrtimān mahā-rājāḥ mām prāptam na jānāti
dhi tātaḥ satvaram saṃnamya mām mūrdhni upajighret
24. Certainly, the glorious great king (my father) does not know that I have arrived. For my father would surely bend down swiftly and smell my head.
क्व स पाणिः सुखस्पर्शस्तातस्याक्लिष्टकर्मणः ।
येन मां रजसा ध्वस्तमभीक्ष्णं परिमार्जति ॥२५॥
25. kva sa pāṇiḥ sukhasparśastātasyākliṣṭakarmaṇaḥ ,
yena māṃ rajasā dhvastamabhīkṣṇaṃ parimārjati.
25. kva sa pāṇiḥ sukha-sparśaḥ tātasya akliṣṭa-karmaṇaḥ
yena mām rajasā dhvastam abhīkṣṇam parimārjati
25. kva sa sukha-sparśaḥ akliṣṭa-karmaṇaḥ tātasya pāṇiḥ?
yena mām rajasā dhvastam abhīkṣṇam parimārjati
25. Where is that hand, soft to the touch, of my father, whose actions were effortless? With which he would constantly wipe away the dust from me.
यो मे भ्राता पिता बन्धुर्यस्य दासो ऽस्मि धीमतः ।
तस्य मां शीघ्रमाख्याहि रामस्याक्लिष्ट कर्मणः ॥२६॥
26. yo me bhrātā pitā bandhuryasya dāso'smi dhīmataḥ ,
tasya māṃ śīghramākhyāhi rāmasyākliṣṭa karmaṇaḥ.
26. yaḥ me bhrātā pitā bandhuḥ yasya dāsaḥ asmi dhīmataḥ
tasya mām śīghram ākhyāhi rāmasya akliṣṭa-karmaṇaḥ
26. śīghram mām tasya akliṣṭa-karmaṇaḥ rāmasya ākhyāhi,
yaḥ me bhrātā pitā bandhuḥ,
yasya dhīmataḥ dāsaḥ asmi
26. Quickly tell me about Rama, who is my brother, father, and kinsman, and whose servant I am, that wise one whose actions (karma) are effortless.
पिता हि भवति ज्येष्ठो धर्ममार्यस्य जानतः ।
तस्य पादौ ग्रहीष्यामि स हीदानीं गतिर्मम ॥२७॥
27. pitā hi bhavati jyeṣṭho dharmamāryasya jānataḥ ,
tasya pādau grahīṣyāmi sa hīdānīṃ gatirmama.
27. pitā hi bhavati jyeṣṭhaḥ dharmam āryasya jānataḥ
tasya pādau grahīṣyāmi saḥ hi idānīm gatiḥ mama
27. hi pitā jyeṣṭhaḥ āryasya dharmam jānataḥ bhavati
tasya pādau grahīṣyāmi saḥ hi idānīm mama gatiḥ
27. Indeed, a father is the most venerable to one who understands the natural law (dharma) pertaining to a noble person. I will grasp his feet, for he is now my refuge.
आर्ये किमब्रवीद् राजा पिता मे सत्यविक्रमः ।
पश्चिमं साधु संदेशमिच्छामि श्रोतुमात्मनः ॥२८॥
28. ārye kimabravīd rājā pitā me satyavikramaḥ ,
paścimaṃ sādhu saṃdeśamicchāmi śrotumātmanaḥ.
28. ārye kim abravīt rājā pitā me satyavikramaḥ
paścimam sādhu sandeśam icchāmi śrotum ātmanaḥ
28. ārye me satyavikramaḥ pitā rājā kim abravīt
paścimam sādhu sandeśam ātmanaḥ śrotum icchāmi
28. O noble lady (Ārye), what did the king, my father of true valor, say? I wish to hear his last auspicious message for myself (ātman).
इति पृष्टा यथातत्त्वं कैकेयी वाक्यमब्रवीत् ।
रामेति राजा विलपन् हा सीते लक्ष्मणेति च ।
स महात्मा परं लोकं गतो गतिमतां वरः ॥२९॥
29. iti pṛṣṭā yathātattvaṃ kaikeyī vākyamabravīt ,
rāmeti rājā vilapan hā sīte lakṣmaṇeti ca ,
sa mahātmā paraṃ lokaṃ gato gatimatāṃ varaḥ.
29. iti pṛṣṭā yathātattvam kaikeyī vākyam
abravīt rāma iti rājā vilapan
hā sīte lakṣmaṇa iti ca saḥ mahātmā
param lokam gataḥ gatimatām varaḥ
29. iti pṛṣṭā yathātattvam kaikeyī vākyam
abravīt rājā rāma iti hā sīte
lakṣmaṇa iti ca vilapan saḥ mahātmā
gatimatām varaḥ param lokam gataḥ
29. Thus questioned truthfully, Kaikeyī spoke. The king, lamenting with the words "O Rama! Alas, Sita! O Lakshmana!", that great soul, the best among those who achieve their destination, passed on to the supreme world.
इमां तु पश्चिमां वाचं व्याजहार पिता तव ।
काल धर्मपरिक्षिप्तः पाशैरिव महागजः ॥३०॥
30. imāṃ tu paścimāṃ vācaṃ vyājahāra pitā tava ,
kāla dharmaparikṣiptaḥ pāśairiva mahāgajaḥ.
30. imām tu paścimām vācam vyājahāra pitā tava
kāladharmaparikṣiptaḥ pāśaiḥ iva mahāgajaḥ
30. tava pitā imām paścimām vācam vyājahāra
kāladharmaparikṣiptaḥ mahāgajaḥ pāśaiḥ iva
30. But your father uttered this last word, he being enveloped by the natural laws (dharma) of time, just like a great elephant by ropes.
सिद्धार्थास्तु नरा राममागतं सीतया सह ।
लक्ष्मणं च महाबाहुं द्रक्ष्यन्ति पुनरागतम् ॥३१॥
31. siddhārthāstu narā rāmamāgataṃ sītayā saha ,
lakṣmaṇaṃ ca mahābāhuṃ drakṣyanti punarāgatam.
31. siddhārthāḥ tu narāḥ rāmam āgatam sītayā saha
lakṣmaṇam ca mahābāhum drakṣyanti punaḥ āgatam
31. siddhārthāḥ narāḥ tu sītayā saha āgatam rāmam
ca punaḥ āgatam mahābāhum lakṣmaṇam drakṣyanti
31. Indeed, those men whose objectives have been fulfilled will see Rama, who has returned with Sita, and the mighty-armed Lakshmana, also returned.
तच्छ्रुत्वा विषसादैव द्वितीया प्रियशंसनात् ।
विषण्णवदनो भूत्वा भूयः पप्रच्छ मातरम् ॥३२॥
32. tacchrutvā viṣasādaiva dvitīyā priyaśaṃsanāt ,
viṣaṇṇavadano bhūtvā bhūyaḥ papraccha mātaram.
32. tat śrutvā viṣasāda eva dvitīyā priyaśaṃsanāt
viṣaṇṇavadanaḥ bhūtvā bhūyaḥ papraccha mātaram
32. dvitīyā tat śrutvā priyaśaṃsanāt eva viṣasāda
viṣaṇṇavadanaḥ bhūtvā bhūyaḥ mātaram papraccha
32. Having heard that, the second queen (Kaikeyi) indeed became distressed by the announcement of the joyous news. Becoming sad-faced, she questioned her mother (Manthara) again.
क्व चेदानीं स धर्मात्मा कौसल्यानन्दवर्धनः ।
लक्ष्मणेन सह भ्रात्रा सीतया च समं गतः ॥३३॥
33. kva cedānīṃ sa dharmātmā kausalyānandavardhanaḥ ,
lakṣmaṇena saha bhrātrā sītayā ca samaṃ gataḥ.
33. kva ca idānīm saḥ dharmātmā kausalyānandavardhanaḥ
lakṣmaṇena saha bhrātrā sītayā ca samam gataḥ
33. kva ca idānīm saḥ dharmātmā kausalyānandavardhanaḥ
bhrātrā lakṣmaṇena saha ca sītayā samam gataḥ
33. And where now has that righteous soul (dharmātmā), who brings joy to Kausalya, gone, accompanied by his brother Lakshmana and Sita?
तथा पृष्टा यथातत्त्वमाख्यातुमुपचक्रमे ।
मातास्य युगपद्वाक्यं विप्रियं प्रियशङ्कया ॥३४॥
34. tathā pṛṣṭā yathātattvamākhyātumupacakrame ,
mātāsya yugapadvākyaṃ vipriyaṃ priyaśaṅkayā.
34. tathā pṛṣṭā yathātattvam ākhyātum upacakrame
mātā asya yugapat vākyam vipriyam priyaśaṅkayā
34. tathā pṛṣṭā asya mātā yathātattvam ākhyātum
priyaśaṅkayā yugapat vipriyam vākyam upacakrame
34. Thus questioned, her mother (Manthara) began to explain the situation truthfully. Simultaneously, with apprehension about any pleasing outcome (for others), she uttered unwelcome words.
स हि राजसुतः पुत्र चीरवासा महावनम् ।
दण्डकान् सह वैदेह्या लक्ष्मणानुचरो गतः ॥३५॥
35. sa hi rājasutaḥ putra cīravāsā mahāvanam ,
daṇḍakān saha vaidehyā lakṣmaṇānucaro gataḥ.
35. saḥ hi rājasutaḥ putra cīravāsāḥ mahāvanam
daṇḍakān saha vaidehyā lakṣmaṇānucaraḥ gataḥ
35. putra saḥ hi rājasutaḥ cīravāsāḥ vaidehyā
saha lakṣmaṇānucaraḥ daṇḍakān mahāvanam gataḥ
35. Indeed, my son, that prince, dressed in bark garments, went to the great Daṇḍaka forest, accompanied by Vaidehī and followed by Lakshmana.
तच्छ्रुत्वा भरतस्त्रस्तो भ्रातुश्चारित्रशङ्कया ।
स्वस्य वंशस्य माहात्म्यात् प्रष्टुं समुपचक्रमे ॥३६॥
36. tacchrutvā bharatastrasto bhrātuścāritraśaṅkayā ,
svasya vaṃśasya māhātmyāt praṣṭuṃ samupacakrame.
36. tat śrutvā bharataḥ trastaḥ bhrātuḥ cāritraśaṅkayā
svasya vaṃśasya māhātmyāt praṣṭum samupacakrame
36. bharataḥ tat śrutvā bhrātuḥ cāritraśaṅkayā trastaḥ

36. Having heard that, Bharata, agitated by a doubt concerning his brother's character, and mindful of the greatness of his own lineage, began to question.
कच्चिन्न ब्राह्मणवधं हृतं रामेण कस्य चित् ।
कच्चिन्नाढ्यो दरिद्रो वा तेनापापो विहिंसितः ॥३७॥
37. kaccinna brāhmaṇavadhaṃ hṛtaṃ rāmeṇa kasya cit ,
kaccinnāḍhyo daridro vā tenāpāpo vihiṃsitaḥ.
37. kaccit na brāhmaṇavadham hṛtam rāmeṇa kasya cit
kaccit na āḍhyaḥ daridraḥ vā tena apāpaḥ vihiṃsitaḥ
37. kaccit rāmeṇa kasya cit brāhmaṇavadham na hṛtam?
kaccit tena āḍhyaḥ daridraḥ vā apāpaḥ na vihiṃsitaḥ?
37. Surely Rama has not committed the slaying of any Brahmin? Has he not, by chance, harmed any innocent person, be they rich or poor?
कच्चिन्न परदारान् वा राजपुत्रो ऽभिमन्यते ।
कस्मात् स दण्डकारण्ये भ्रूणहेव विवासितः ॥३८॥
38. kaccinna paradārān vā rājaputro'bhimanyate ,
kasmāt sa daṇḍakāraṇye bhrūṇaheva vivāsitaḥ.
38. kaccit na paradārān vā rājaputraḥ abhimanyate
kasmāt saḥ daṇḍakāraṇye bhrūṇahā iva vivāsitaḥ
38. kaccit rājaputraḥ paradārān vā na abhimanyate?
kasmāt saḥ bhrūṇahā iva daṇḍakāraṇye vivāsitaḥ?
38. Surely the prince does not covet the wives of others? Why, then, has he been banished to the Daṇḍaka forest as if he were an embryo-killer (bhrūṇahā)?
अथास्य चपला माता तत् स्वकर्म यथातथम् ।
तेनैव स्त्रीस्वभावेन व्याहर्तुमुपचक्रमे ॥३९॥
39. athāsya capalā mātā tat svakarma yathātatham ,
tenaiva strīsvabhāvena vyāhartumupacakrame.
39. atha asya capalā mātā tat svakarma yathātatham
tena eva strīsvabhāvena vyāhartum upacakrame
39. atha asya capalā mātā tena eva strīsvabhāvena

39. Then, his fickle mother, true to her feminine nature, began to declare her own actions exactly as they had transpired.
न ब्राह्मणधनं किं चिद्धृतं रामेण कस्य चित् ।
कश्चिन्नाढ्यो दरिद्रो वा तेनापापो विहिंसितः ।
न रामः परदारांश्च चक्षुर्भ्यामपि पश्यति ॥४०॥
40. na brāhmaṇadhanaṃ kiṃ ciddhṛtaṃ rāmeṇa kasya cit ,
kaścinnāḍhyo daridro vā tenāpāpo vihiṃsitaḥ ,
na rāmaḥ paradārāṃśca cakṣurbhyāmapi paśyati.
40. na brāhmaṇadhanam kim cit dhṛtam rāmeṇa
kasya cit kaścit na āḍhyaḥ daridraḥ
vā tena apāpaḥ vihiṃsitaḥ na rāmaḥ
paradārān ca cakṣurbhyām api paśyati
40. rāmeṇa kasyacit brāhmaṇadhanam kiṃcit na dhṛtam.
tena āḍhyaḥ vā daridraḥ kaścit apāpaḥ na vihiṃsitaḥ.
rāmaḥ ca paradārān cakṣurbhyām api na paśyati
40. Rama has not seized any Brahmin's property from anyone. Nor has any innocent person, whether rich or poor, been harmed by him. Rama does not even look at other men's wives with his eyes.
मया तु पुत्र श्रुत्वैव रामस्यैवाभिषेचनम् ।
याचितस्ते पिता राज्यं रामस्य च विवासनम् ॥४१॥
41. mayā tu putra śrutvaiva rāmasyaivābhiṣecanam ,
yācitaste pitā rājyaṃ rāmasya ca vivāsanam.
41. mayā tu putra śrutvā eva rāmasya eva abhiṣecanam
yācitaḥ te pitā rājyam rāmasya ca vivāsanam
41. tu putra,
mayā rāmasya eva abhiṣecanam śrutvā eva,
te pitā rājyam ca rāmasya vivāsanam yācitaḥ
41. But, my son, it was I who, as soon as I heard of Rama's consecration, requested the kingdom for you and Rama's banishment from your father.
स स्ववृत्तिं समास्थाय पिता ते तत्तथाकरोत् ।
रामश्च सहसौमित्रिः प्रेषितः सह सीतया ॥४२॥
42. sa svavṛttiṃ samāsthāya pitā te tattathākarot ,
rāmaśca sahasaumitriḥ preṣitaḥ saha sītayā.
42. saḥ svavṛttim samāsthāya pitā te tat tathā akarot
rāmaḥ ca sahasraumitriḥ preṣitaḥ saha sītayā
42. te pitā saḥ svavṛttim samāsthāya tat tathā akarot.
ca rāmaḥ sahasraumitriḥ saha sītayā preṣitaḥ
42. Your father, abiding by his own (dharma) (duty), acted in that manner. And Rama, accompanied by Saumitri (Lakṣmaṇa) and Sītā, was sent forth.
तमपश्यन्प्रियं पुत्रं महीपालो महायशाः ।
पुत्रशोकपरिद्यूनः पञ्चत्वमुपपेदिवान् ॥४३॥
43. tamapaśyanpriyaṃ putraṃ mahīpālo mahāyaśāḥ ,
putraśokaparidyūnaḥ pañcatvamupapedivān.
43. tam apaśyan priyam putram mahīpālaḥ mahāyaśāḥ
putraśokaparidyūnaḥ pañcatvam upapedivān
43. mahāyaśāḥ mahīpālaḥ priyam putram tam apaśyan
putraśokaparidyūnaḥ pañcatvam upapedivān
43. The greatly renowned king, unable to see his beloved son, was overcome by grief for his son and consequently met his death.
त्वया त्विदानीं धर्मज्ञ राजत्वमवलम्ब्यताम् ।
त्वत्कृते हि मया सर्वमिदमेवंविधं कृतम् ॥४४॥
44. tvayā tvidānīṃ dharmajña rājatvamavalambyatām ,
tvatkṛte hi mayā sarvamidamevaṃvidhaṃ kṛtam.
44. tvayā tu idānīm dharma-jña rājatvam avalambyatām
tvat-kṛte hi mayā sarvam idam evaṁ-vidham kṛtam
44. dharma-jña tvayā tu idānīm rājatvam avalambyatām
hi mayā tvat-kṛte idam sarvam evaṁ-vidham kṛtam
44. O knower of righteousness (dharma), kingship should now be assumed by you. Indeed, it was for your sake that all these things were done by me.
तत् पुत्र शीघ्रं विधिना विधिज्ञैर्वसिष्ठमुख्यैः सहितो द्विजेन्द्रैः ।
संकाल्य राजानमदीनसत्त्वमात्मानमुर्व्यामभिषेचयस्व ॥४५॥
45. tat putra śīghraṃ vidhinā vidhijñairvasiṣṭhamukhyaiḥ sahito dvijendraiḥ ,
saṃkālya rājānamadīnasattvamātmānamurvyāmabhiṣecayasva.
45. tat putra śīghram vidhinā vidhi-jñaiḥ
vasiṣṭha-mukhyaiḥ sahitaḥ
dvijendraiḥ saṁkalya rājānam
adīna-sattvam ātmānam urvyām abhiṣecayasva
45. tat putra,
śīghram vidhinā vidhi-jñaiḥ vasiṣṭha-mukhyaiḥ dvijendraiḥ sahitaḥ,
adīna-sattvam rājānam saṁkalya,
urvyām ātmānam abhiṣecayasva
45. Therefore, my son, quickly, by the prescribed rituals, accompanied by the chief Brahmins (dvijendra) led by Vasiṣṭha, having resolved to be king with an undaunted spirit, anoint yourself upon the earth.
