स जित्वा भ्रातरं राम धनदं राक्षसाधिपः ।
महासेनप्रसूतिं तु ययौ शरवणं ततः ॥१॥

1. O Rāma, the lord of rākṣasas, having conquered his brother Kubera, then went to Śaravaṇa, the birthplace of Mahāsena (Kārtikeya).
अथापश्यद्दशग्रीवो रौक्मं शरवणं तदा ।
गभस्तिजालसंवीतं द्वितीयमिव भास्करम् ॥२॥
2. athāpaśyaddaśagrīvo raukmaṃ śaravaṇaṃ tadā ,
gabhastijālasaṃvītaṃ dvitīyamiva bhāskaram.

2. Then, Rāvaṇa (Daśagrīva) saw a golden 'Śaravaṇa' at that moment, enveloped in a network of rays, appearing like a second sun.
पर्वतं स समासाद्य किं चिद् रम्यवनान्तरम् ।
अपश्यत् पुष्पकं तत्र राम विष्टम्भितं दिवि ॥३॥
3. parvataṃ sa samāsādya kiṃ cid ramyavanāntaram ,
apaśyat puṣpakaṃ tatra rāma viṣṭambhitaṃ divi.

3. O Rāma, having approached a mountain with somewhat beautiful forest interiors, he (Rāvaṇa) then saw the Puṣpaka (chariot) stopped in the sky there.
विष्टब्धं पुष्पकं दृष्ट्वा कामगं ह्यगमं कृतम् ।
राक्षसश्चिन्तयामास सचिवैस्तैः समावृतः ॥४॥
4. viṣṭabdhaṃ puṣpakaṃ dṛṣṭvā kāmagaṃ hyagamaṃ kṛtam ,
rākṣasaścintayāmāsa sacivaistaiḥ samāvṛtaḥ.

4. Having seen the Puṣpaka, which usually moves at will, rendered motionless and obstructed, the demon (Rāvaṇa), surrounded by his ministers, began to ponder.
किमिदं यन्निमित्तं मे न च गच्छति पुष्पकम् ।
पर्वतस्योपरिस्थस्य कस्य कर्म त्विदं भवेत् ॥५॥
5. kimidaṃ yannimittaṃ me na ca gacchati puṣpakam ,
parvatasyoparisthasya kasya karma tvidaṃ bhavet.
5. kim idam yat nimittam me na ca gacchati puṣpakam
parvatasya uparisthasya kasya karma tu idam bhavet

5. What is this cause by which my Puṣpaka (chariot) does not move? Whose action (karma) could this be, associated with the mountain situated above?
ततो ऽब्रवीद्दशग्रीवं मारीचो बुद्धिकोविदः ।
नैतन्निष्कारणं राजन्पुष्पको ऽयं न गच्छति ॥६॥
6. tato'bravīddaśagrīvaṃ mārīco buddhikovidaḥ ,
naitanniṣkāraṇaṃ rājanpuṣpako'yaṃ na gacchati.
6. tataḥ abravīt daśagrīvam marīcaḥ buddhikovidaḥ na
etat niṣkāraṇam rājan puṣpakaḥ ayam na gacchati

6. Then Marīca, skilled in intellect, said to Daśagrīva (Rāvaṇa): 'This is not without reason, O King; this Puṣpaka (chariot) is not moving.'
ततः पार्श्वमुपागम्य भवस्यानुचरो बली ।
नन्दीश्वर उवाचेदं राक्षसेन्द्रमशङ्कितः ॥७॥
7. tataḥ pārśvamupāgamya bhavasyānucaro balī ,
nandīśvara uvācedaṃ rākṣasendramaśaṅkitaḥ.

7. Then, the powerful attendant of Bhava (Śiva), Nandiśvara, unafraid, approached the side (of Rāvaṇa) and spoke this to the king of rākṣasas.

शैले क्रीडति शंकरः ॥८॥

8. Turn back, O Daśagrīva (Rāvaṇa)! Śaṅkara (Śiva) is sporting on this mountain.
सुपर्णनागयक्षाणां दैत्यदानवरक्षसाम् ।
प्राणिनामेव सर्वेषामगम्यः पर्वतः कृतः ॥९॥
9. suparṇanāgayakṣāṇāṃ daityadānavarakṣasām ,
prāṇināmeva sarveṣāmagamyaḥ parvataḥ kṛtaḥ.

9. This mountain has been rendered inaccessible to all beings - even to Suparṇas, Nāgas, Yakṣas, Daityas, Dānavas, and Rākṣasas.
स रोषात्ताम्रनयनः पुष्पकादवरुह्य च ।
को ऽयं शंकर इत्युक्त्वा शैलमूलमुपागमत् ॥१०॥
10. sa roṣāttāmranayanaḥ puṣpakādavaruhya ca ,
ko'yaṃ śaṃkara ityuktvā śailamūlamupāgamat.
10. saḥ roṣāt tāmranayanaḥ puṣpakāt avaruhya ca
kaḥ ayam śaṅkaraḥ iti uktvā śailamūlam upāgamat

10. He, his eyes reddened with rage, descended from the Puṣpaka chariot. Asking, 'Who is this Shankara?', he then approached the base of the mountain.
नन्दीश्वरमथापश्यदविदूरस्थितं प्रभुम् ।
दीप्तं शूलमवष्टभ्य द्वितीयमिव शंकरम् ॥११॥
11. nandīśvaramathāpaśyadavidūrasthitaṃ prabhum ,
dīptaṃ śūlamavaṣṭabhya dvitīyamiva śaṃkaram.
11. nandīśvaram atha apaśyat avidūrasthitam prabhum
dīptam śūlam avaṣṭabhya dvitīyam iva śaṅkaram
11. atha nandīśvaram prabhum avidūrasthitam dīptam
śūlam avaṣṭabhya dvitīyam iva śaṅkaram apaśyat
11. Then he saw Nandiśvara, the lord, standing nearby, holding a blazing trident, appearing like a second Shankara.
स वानरमुखं दृष्ट्वा तमवज्ञाय राक्षसः ।
प्रहासं मुमुचे मौर्ख्यात् सतोय इव तोयदः ॥१२॥
12. sa vānaramukhaṃ dṛṣṭvā tamavajñāya rākṣasaḥ ,
prahāsaṃ mumuce maurkhyāt satoya iva toyadaḥ.
12. saḥ vānaramukham dṛṣṭvā tam avajñāya rākṣasaḥ
prahāsam mumuce maurkhyāt satoyaḥ iva toyadaḥ
12. saḥ rākṣasaḥ vānaramukham tam dṛṣṭvā avajñāya
maurkhyāt satoyaḥ toyadaḥ iva prahāsam mumuce
12. Upon seeing his ape-like face, the demon, despising him, burst into loud laughter out of foolishness, just like a cloud heavy with water.
संक्रुद्धो भगवान्नन्दी शंकरस्यापरा तनुः ।
अब्रवीद् राक्षसं तत्र दशग्रीवमुपस्थितम् ॥१३॥
13. saṃkruddho bhagavānnandī śaṃkarasyāparā tanuḥ ,
abravīd rākṣasaṃ tatra daśagrīvamupasthitam.
13. saṃkruddhaḥ bhagavān nandī śaṅkarasya aparā tanuḥ
abravīt rākṣasam tatra daśagrīvam upasthitam
13. tatra saṃkruddhaḥ bhagavān śaṅkarasya aparā tanuḥ

13. Then the greatly enraged venerable Nandi, who was another form of Shankara, spoke to the demon Daśagrīva, who was present there.
यस्माद्वानरमूर्तिं मां दृष्ट्वा राक्षसदुर्मते ।
मौर्ख्यात्त्वमवजानीषे परिहासं च मुञ्चसि ॥१४॥
14. yasmādvānaramūrtiṃ māṃ dṛṣṭvā rākṣasadurmate ,
maurkhyāttvamavajānīṣe parihāsaṃ ca muñcasi.
14. yasmāt vānaramūrtim mām dṛṣṭvā rākṣasadurmate
maurkkhyāt tvam avajānīṣe parihāsam ca muñcasi
14. rākṣasadurmate yasmāt mām vānaramūrtim dṛṣṭvā
tvam maurkkhyāt avajānīṣe ca parihāsam muñcasi
14. Because, O evil-minded demon, having seen me in a monkey form, you foolishly insult me and utter ridicule.
तस्मान्मद्रूपसंयुक्ता मद्वीर्यसमतेजसः ।
उत्पत्स्यन्ते वधार्थं हि कुलस्य तव वानराः ॥१५॥
15. tasmānmadrūpasaṃyuktā madvīryasamatejasaḥ ,
utpatsyante vadhārthaṃ hi kulasya tava vānarāḥ.
15. tasmāt mad-rūpa-saṃyuktāḥ mad-vīrya-sama-tejasaḥ
utpatsyante vadhārtham hi kulasya tava vānarāḥ
15. tasmāt tava kulasya vadhārtham mad-rūpa-saṃyuktāḥ
mad-vīrya-sama-tejasaḥ vānarāḥ hi utpatsyante
15. Therefore, monkeys possessing my form and equal to my strength and splendor will indeed be born for the destruction of your family.
किं त्विदानीं मया शक्यं कर्तुं यत्त्वां निशाचर ।
न हन्तव्यो हतस्त्वं हि पूर्वमेव स्वकर्मभिः ॥१६॥
16. kiṃ tvidānīṃ mayā śakyaṃ kartuṃ yattvāṃ niśācara ,
na hantavyo hatastvaṃ hi pūrvameva svakarmabhiḥ.
16. kim tu idānīm mayā śakyam kartum yat tvām niśācara
na hantavyaḥ hataḥ tvam hi pūrvam eva svakarmabhiḥ
16. tu idānīm mayā tvām yat kartum kim śakyam niśācara? tvam hi na hantavyaḥ,
pūrvam eva svakarmabhiḥ hataḥ
16. But what can I possibly do to you now, O night-wanderer? You are not to be killed, for you are certainly already slain by your own actions (karma).
अचिन्तयित्वा स तदा नन्दिवाक्यं निशाचरः ।
पर्वतं तं समासाद्य वाक्यमेतदुवाच ह ॥१७॥
17. acintayitvā sa tadā nandivākyaṃ niśācaraḥ ,
parvataṃ taṃ samāsādya vākyametaduvāca ha.
17. acintayitvā saḥ tadā nandivākyam niśācaraḥ
parvatam tam samāsādya vākyam etat uvāca ha
17. tadā niśācaraḥ saḥ nandivākyam acintayitvā

17. Without considering Nandi's words, that night-wanderer (Rāvaṇa) then approached that mountain and indeed spoke these words.
पुष्पकस्य गतिश्छिन्ना यत्कृते मम गच्छतः ।
तदेतच्छैलमुन्मूलं करोमि तव गोपते ॥१८॥
18. puṣpakasya gatiśchinnā yatkṛte mama gacchataḥ ,
tadetacchailamunmūlaṃ karomi tava gopate.
18. puṣpakasya gatiḥ chinnā yatkṛte mama gacchataḥ
tat etat śailam unmūlam karomi tava gopate
18. mama gacchataḥ puṣpakasya gatiḥ chinnā yatkṛte tat etat śailam,
he gopate,
tava unmūlam karomi
18. My Puṣpaka chariot's movement was obstructed because of this while I was going. Therefore, O protector, I will uproot this mountain for you.
केन प्रभावेन भवस्तत्र क्रीडति राजवत् ।
विज्ञातव्यं न जानीषे भयस्थानमुपस्थितम् ॥१९॥
19. kena prabhāvena bhavastatra krīḍati rājavat ,
vijñātavyaṃ na jānīṣe bhayasthānamupasthitam.
19. kena prabhāveṇa bhavaḥ tatra krīḍati rājavat
vijñātavyam na jānīṣe bhayasthānam upasthitam
19. kena prabhāveṇa bhavaḥ tatra rājavat krīḍati?
bhayasthānam upasthitam vijñātavyam na jānīṣe
19. By what power does Bhava (Śiva) play there like a king? You do not understand the present danger that ought to be known.
एवमुक्त्वा ततो राजन्भुजान्प्रक्षिप्य पर्वते ।
तोलयामास तं शैलं समृगव्यालपादपम् ॥२०॥
20. evamuktvā tato rājanbhujānprakṣipya parvate ,
tolayāmāsa taṃ śailaṃ samṛgavyālapādapam.
20. evam uktvā tataḥ rājan bhujān prakṣipya parvate
tolayām āsa tam śailam samṛgavyālapādapam
20. rājan,
evam uktvā tataḥ parvate bhujān prakṣipya tam samṛgavyālapādapam śailam tolayām āsa
20. Having spoken thus, O King, he then thrust his arms into the mountain and lifted that mountain, along with its deer, wild animals, and trees.
ततो राम महादेवः प्रहसन् वीक्ष्य तत्कृतम् ।
पादाङ्गुष्ठेन तं शैलं पीडयामास लीलया ॥२१॥
21. tato rāma mahādevaḥ prahasan vīkṣya tatkṛtam ,
pādāṅguṣṭhena taṃ śailaṃ pīḍayāmāsa līlayā.
21. tataḥ rāma mahādevaḥ prahasan vīkṣya tat kṛtam
pādāṅguṣṭhena tam śailam pīḍayām āsa līlayā
21. tataḥ,
he rāma,
mahādevaḥ prahasan tat kṛtam vīkṣya pādāṅguṣṭhena tam śailam līlayā pīḍayām āsa
21. Then, O Rāma, the great god (Mahādeva), smiling and seeing what had been done, effortlessly (līlayā) pressed down that mountain with his big toe.
ततस्ते पीडितास्तस्य शैलस्याधो गता भुजाः ।
विस्मिताश्चाभवंस्तत्र सचिवास्तस्य रक्षसः ॥२२॥
22. tataste pīḍitāstasya śailasyādho gatā bhujāḥ ,
vismitāścābhavaṃstatra sacivāstasya rakṣasaḥ.
22. tataḥ te pīḍitāḥ tasya śailasya adhaḥ gatāḥ bhujāḥ
vismitāḥ ca abhavan tatra sacivāḥ tasya rakṣasaḥ
22. tataḥ tasya bhujāḥ pīḍitāḥ śailasya adhaḥ gatāḥ
ca tatra tasya rakṣasaḥ sacivāḥ vismitāḥ abhavan
22. Then, his arms, having been crushed, went beneath that mountain. And there, his ministers, of that demon (rakṣas), became astonished.
रक्षसा तेन रोषाच्च भुजानां पीडनात्तथा ।
मुक्तो विरावः सुमहांस्त्रैलोक्यं येन पूरितम् ॥२३॥
23. rakṣasā tena roṣācca bhujānāṃ pīḍanāttathā ,
mukto virāvaḥ sumahāṃstrailokyaṃ yena pūritam.
23. rakṣasā tena roṣāt ca bhujānām pīḍanāt tathā
muktaḥ virāvaḥ sumahān trailokyam yena pūritam
23. tena rakṣasā roṣāt bhujānām pīḍanāt ca tathā
sumahān virāvaḥ muktaḥ yena trailokyam pūritam
23. From anger and the pain from the crushing of his arms, that demon (rakṣas) let out a very great cry, by which the three worlds were filled.
मानुषाः शब्दवित्रस्ता मेनिरे लोकसंक्षयम् ।
देवताश्चापि संक्षुब्धाश्चलिताः स्वेषु कर्मसु ॥२४॥
24. mānuṣāḥ śabdavitrastā menire lokasaṃkṣayam ,
devatāścāpi saṃkṣubdhāścalitāḥ sveṣu karmasu.
24. mānuṣāḥ śabdavitrastāḥ menire lokasaṃkṣayam
devatāḥ ca api saṃkṣubdhāḥ calitāḥ sveṣu karmasu
24. śabdavitrastāḥ mānuṣāḥ lokasaṃkṣayam menire ca
api saṃkṣubdhāḥ devatāḥ sveṣu karmasu calitāḥ
24. Humans, terrified by the sound, believed it to be the destruction of the world. Even the deities became agitated and deviated from their respective duties (karma).
ततः प्रीतो महादेवः शैलाग्रे विष्ठितस्तदा ।
मुक्त्वा तस्य भुजान् राजन्प्राह वाक्यं दशाननम् ॥२५॥
25. tataḥ prīto mahādevaḥ śailāgre viṣṭhitastadā ,
muktvā tasya bhujān rājanprāha vākyaṃ daśānanam.
25. tataḥ prītaḥ mahādevaḥ śailāgre viṣṭhitaḥ tadā
muktvā tasya bhujān rājan prāha vākyam daśānanam
25. tataḥ tadā śailāgre viṣṭhitaḥ prītaḥ mahādevaḥ rājan,
tasya bhujān muktvā daśānanam vākyam prāha
25. Then, at that moment, the pleased great deity (Mahādeva), situated on the mountain peak, O King, released his (Rāvaṇa's) arms and spoke these words to Daśānana.
प्रीतो ऽस्मि तव वीर्याच्च शौण्डीर्याच्च निशाचर ।
रवतो वेदना मुक्तः स्वरः परमदारुणः ॥२६॥
26. prīto'smi tava vīryācca śauṇḍīryācca niśācara ,
ravato vedanā muktaḥ svaraḥ paramadāruṇaḥ.
26. prītaḥ asmi tava vīryāt ca śauṇḍīryāt ca niśācara
ravataḥ vedanāmuktaḥ svaraḥ paramadāruṇaḥ
26. niśācara tava vīryāt ca śauṇḍīryāt ca asmi
prītaḥ ravataḥ vedanāmuktaḥ paramadāruṇaḥ svaraḥ
26. O night-wanderer, I am pleased by your valor and your prowess. The exceedingly dreadful sound of your roaring was one freed from pain (or, a sound in which pain was released).
यस्माल् लोकत्रयं त्वेतद् रावितं भयमागतम् ।
तस्मात्त्वं रावणो नाम नाम्ना तेन भविष्यसि ॥२७॥
27. yasmāl lokatrayaṃ tvetad rāvitaṃ bhayamāgatam ,
tasmāttvaṃ rāvaṇo nāma nāmnā tena bhaviṣyasi.
27. yasmāt lokatrayam tu etat rāvitam bhayam āgatam
tasmāt tvam rāvaṇaḥ nāma nāmnā tena bhaviṣyasi
27. yasmāt etat lokatrayam rāvitam bhayam āgatam
tasmāt tvam tena nāmnā rāvaṇaḥ nāma bhaviṣyasi
27. Because by this act of roaring you made the three worlds cry out (in terror), and fear arose, therefore you will be known by the name Rāvaṇa.
देवता मानुषा यक्षा ये चान्ये जगतीतले ।
एवं त्वामभिधास्यन्ति रावणं लोकरावणम् ॥२८॥
28. devatā mānuṣā yakṣā ye cānye jagatītale ,
evaṃ tvāmabhidhāsyanti rāvaṇaṃ lokarāvaṇam.
28. devatāḥ mānuṣāḥ yakṣāḥ ye ca anye jagatītale
evam tvām abhidhāsyanti rāvaṇam lokarāvaṇam
28. devatāḥ mānuṣāḥ yakṣāḥ ca ye anye jagatītale
evam tvām rāvaṇam lokarāvaṇam abhidhāsyanti
28. Gods, humans, yakṣas, and all others on the surface of the earth will thus name you Rāvaṇa, the one who makes the worlds cry out (in terror).
गच्छ पौलस्त्य विस्रब्धः पथा येन त्वमिच्छसि ।
मया त्वमभ्यनुज्ञातो राक्षसाधिप गम्यताम् ॥२९॥
29. gaccha paulastya visrabdhaḥ pathā yena tvamicchasi ,
mayā tvamabhyanujñāto rākṣasādhipa gamyatām.
29. gaccha paulastya visrabdhaḥ pathā yena tvam icchasi
mayā tvam abhyanujñātaḥ rākṣasādhipa gamyatām

29. Go, O descendant of Pulastya, confidently by whichever path you desire. O lord of rākṣasas, you are permitted by me; therefore, proceed!
साक्षान्महेश्वरेणैवं कृतनामा स रावणः ।
अभिवाद्य महादेवं विमानं तत् समारुहत् ॥३०॥
30. sākṣānmaheśvareṇaivaṃ kṛtanāmā sa rāvaṇaḥ ,
abhivādya mahādevaṃ vimānaṃ tat samāruhat.
30. sākṣāt maheśvareṇa evam kṛtanāmā saḥ rāvaṇaḥ
abhivādya mahādevam vimānam tat samāruhat
30. saḥ rāvaṇaḥ maheśvareṇa sākṣāt evam kṛtanāmā

30. Ravana, thus directly named by Maheśvara, then saluted the great deity and ascended that aerial chariot.
ततो महीतले राम परिचक्राम रावणः ।
क्षत्रियान् सुमहावीर्यान्बाधमानस्ततस्ततः ॥३१॥
31. tato mahītale rāma paricakrāma rāvaṇaḥ ,
kṣatriyān sumahāvīryānbādhamānastatastataḥ.
31. tataḥ mahītale rāma paricakrāma rāvaṇaḥ
kṣatriyān sumahāvīryān bādhamānaḥ tataḥ tataḥ

31. Then, O Rama, Ravana roamed the surface of the earth, harassing the extremely valiant kshatriyas everywhere.
