सुरकार्यमिदं रम्भे कर्तव्यं सुमहत्त्वया ।
लोभनं कौशिकस्येह काममोहसमन्वितम् ॥१॥
1. surakāryamidaṃ rambhe kartavyaṃ sumahattvayā ,
lobhanaṃ kauśikasyeha kāmamohasamanvitam.

1. Rambhā, this immensely important task for the gods must be accomplished by you here: the enticement of Kauśika, involving both desire and delusion.
तथोक्ता साप्सरा राम सहस्राक्षेण धीमता ।
व्रीडिता प्राञ्जलिर्भूत्वा प्रत्युवाच सुरेश्वरम् ॥२॥
2. tathoktā sāpsarā rāma sahasrākṣeṇa dhīmatā ,
vrīḍitā prāñjalirbhūtvā pratyuvāca sureśvaram.
2. tathā uktā sā apsarā rāma sahasrākṣeṇa dhīmatā
vrīḍitā prāñjaliḥ bhūtvā prati uvāca sura-īśvaram
2. rāma,
dhīmatā sahasrākṣeṇa tathā uktā,
sā apsarā vrīḍitā prāñjaliḥ bhūtvā sura-īśvaram prati uvāca.
2. O Rāma, thus spoken to by the intelligent Indra (sahasrākṣa), that Apsara, feeling shy, and with folded hands, replied to the lord of the gods.
अयं सुरपते घोरो विश्वामित्रो महामुनिः ।
क्रोधमुत्स्रक्ष्यते घोरं मयि देव न संशयः ।
ततो हि मे भयं देव प्रसादं कर्तुमर्हसि ॥३॥
3. ayaṃ surapate ghoro viśvāmitro mahāmuniḥ ,
krodhamutsrakṣyate ghoraṃ mayi deva na saṃśayaḥ ,
tato hi me bhayaṃ deva prasādaṃ kartumarhasi.
3. ayam sura-pate ghoraḥ viśvāmitraḥ
mahā-muniḥ krodham utsrakṣyate ghoram
mayi deva na saṃśayaḥ tataḥ hi me
bhayam deva prasādam kartum arhasi
3. sura-pate deva,
ayam ghoraḥ mahā-muniḥ viśvāmitraḥ.
he mayi ghoram krodham utsrakṣyate,
na saṃśayaḥ.
tataḥ hi deva me bhayam; prasādam kartum arhasi.
3. O lord of gods, this Viśvāmitra is a formidable great sage. He will unleash terrible anger upon me, O god; there is no doubt. Therefore, O god, you ought to grant me favor, for I feel fear.
तामुवाच सहस्राक्षो वेपमानां कृताञ्जलिम् ।
मा भैषि रम्भे भद्रं ते कुरुष्व मम शासनम् ॥४॥
4. tāmuvāca sahasrākṣo vepamānāṃ kṛtāñjalim ,
mā bhaiṣi rambhe bhadraṃ te kuruṣva mama śāsanam.
4. tām uvāca sahasrākṣaḥ vepamānām kṛta-añjalim mā
bhaiṣi rambhe bhadram te kuruṣva mama śāsanam
4. sahasrākṣaḥ vepamānām kṛta-añjalim tām uvāca: "rambhe,
mā bhaiṣi.
bhadram te.
mama śāsanam kuruṣva.
"
4. Indra (sahasrākṣa) spoke to her, who was trembling and had folded hands: 'Do not fear, Rambhā, may good fortune be yours; carry out my command.'
कोकिलो हृदयग्राही माधवे रुचिरद्रुमे ।
अहं कन्दर्पसहितः स्थास्यामि तव पार्श्वतः ॥५॥
5. kokilo hṛdayagrāhī mādhave ruciradrume ,
ahaṃ kandarpasahitaḥ sthāsyāmi tava pārśvataḥ.
5. kokilaḥ hṛdaya-grāhī mādhave rucira-drume aham
kandarpa-sahitaḥ sthāsyāmi tava pārśvataḥ
5. aham hṛdaya-grāhī kokilaḥ kandarpa-sahitaḥ rucira-drume mādhave tava pārśvataḥ sthāsyāmi.
5. I, along with Kandarpa, will remain by your side, acting as a captivating cuckoo in the spring season amidst beautiful trees.
त्वं हि रूपं बहुगुणं कृत्वा परमभास्वरम् ।
तमृषिं कौशिकं रम्भे भेदयस्व तपस्विनम् ॥६॥
6. tvaṃ hi rūpaṃ bahuguṇaṃ kṛtvā paramabhāsvaram ,
tamṛṣiṃ kauśikaṃ rambhe bhedayasva tapasvinam.
6. tvam hi rūpam bahuguṇam kṛtvā paramabhāsvaram
tam ṛṣim kauśikam rambhe bhedayasva tapasvinam
6. rambhe tvam hi bahuguṇam paramabhāsvaram rūpam
kṛtvā tam tapasvinam ṛṣim kauśikam bhedayasva
6. Indeed, O Rambha, having assumed a form of many excellent qualities, supremely radiant, you should allure that ascetic sage Kauśika.
सा श्रुत्वा वचनं तस्य कृत्वा रूपमनुत्तमम् ।
लोभयामास ललिता विश्वामित्रं शुचिस्मिता ॥७॥
7. sā śrutvā vacanaṃ tasya kṛtvā rūpamanuttamam ,
lobhayāmāsa lalitā viśvāmitraṃ śucismitā.
7. sā śrutvā vacanam tasya kṛtvā rūpam anuttamam
lobhayāmāsa lalitā viśvāmitram śucismitā
7. sā tasya vacanam śrutvā anuttamam rūpam kṛtvā
lalitā śucismitā viśvāmitram lobhayāmāsa
7. Having heard his words, and assuming a most excellent form, she, charming and pure-smiling, seduced Viśvāmitra.
कोकिलस्य तु शुश्राव वल्गु व्याहरतः स्वनम् ।
संप्रहृष्टेन मनसा तत एनामुदैक्षत ॥८॥
8. kokilasya tu śuśrāva valgu vyāharataḥ svanam ,
saṃprahṛṣṭena manasā tata enāmudaikṣata.
8. kokilasya tu śuśrāva valgu vyāharataḥ svanam
saṃprahṛṣṭena manasā tataḥ enām udaikṣata
8. (sā) kokilasya valgu vyāharataḥ svanam śuśrāva
tataḥ (saḥ) saṃprahṛṣṭena manasā enām udaikṣata
8. She heard the sweet sound of a cuckoo speaking beautifully. Then, with a greatly delighted mind, he looked at her.
अथ तस्य च शब्देन गीतेनाप्रतिमेन च ।
दर्शनेन च रम्भाया मुनिः संदेहमागतः ॥९॥
9. atha tasya ca śabdena gītenāpratimena ca ,
darśanena ca rambhāyā muniḥ saṃdehamāgataḥ.
9. atha tasya ca śabdena gītena apratimena ca
darśanena ca rambhāyāḥ muniḥ saṃdeham āgataḥ
9. atha tasya śabdena ca apratimena gītena ca
rambhāyāḥ darśanena ca muniḥ saṃdeham āgataḥ
9. Then, by that sound, by the incomparable song, and by the sight of Rambha, the sage became filled with doubt.
सहस्राक्षस्य तत् कर्म विज्ञाय मुनिपुंगवः ।
रम्भां क्रोधसमाविष्टः शशाप कुशिकात्मजः ॥१०॥
10. sahasrākṣasya tat karma vijñāya munipuṃgavaḥ ,
rambhāṃ krodhasamāviṣṭaḥ śaśāpa kuśikātmajaḥ.
10. sahasrākṣasya tat karma vijñāya munipuṅgavaḥ
rambhām krodhasamāviṣṭaḥ śaśāpa kuśikātmajaḥ
10. kuśikātmajaḥ munipuṅgavaḥ krodhasamāviṣṭaḥ
sahasrākṣasya tat karma vijñāya rambhām śaśāpa
10. Understanding that action (karma) of the thousand-eyed Indra, the foremost among sages, the son of Kuśika (Viśvāmitra), filled with anger, cursed Rambhā.
यन्मां लोभयसे रम्भे कामक्रोधजयैषिणम् ।
दशवर्षसहस्राणि शैली स्थास्यसि दुर्भगे ॥११॥
11. yanmāṃ lobhayase rambhe kāmakrodhajayaiṣiṇam ,
daśavarṣasahasrāṇi śailī sthāsyasi durbhage.
11. yat mām lobhayase rambhe kāmakrodhajayaiṣiṇam
daśavarṣasahasrāṇi śailī sthāsyasi durbhage
11. rambhe durbhage yat mām kāmakrodhajayaiṣiṇam
lobhayase daśavarṣasahasrāṇi śailī sthāsyasi
11. O Rambhā, O unfortunate one, because you tempt me, who strives to conquer desire and anger, you shall remain as a stone for ten thousand years.
ब्राह्मणः सुमहातेजास्तपोबलसमन्वितः ।
उद्धरिष्यति रम्भे त्वां मत्क्रोधकलुषीकृताम् ॥१२॥
12. brāhmaṇaḥ sumahātejāstapobalasamanvitaḥ ,
uddhariṣyati rambhe tvāṃ matkrodhakaluṣīkṛtām.
12. brāhmaṇaḥ sumahātejāḥ tapobalasamanvitaḥ
uddhariṣyati rambhe tvām matkrodhakaluṣīkṛtām
12. rambhe brāhmaṇaḥ sumahātejāḥ tapobalasamanvitaḥ
matkrodhakaluṣīkṛtām tvām uddhariṣyati
12. O Rambhā, a Brahmin of immense splendor, endowed with the power of asceticism (tapas), will deliver you, who have been defiled by my anger.
एवमुक्त्वा महातेजा विश्वामित्रो महामुनिः ।
अशक्नुवन्धारयितुं कोपं संतापमागतः ॥१३॥
13. evamuktvā mahātejā viśvāmitro mahāmuniḥ ,
aśaknuvandhārayituṃ kopaṃ saṃtāpamāgataḥ.
13. evam uktvā mahātejāḥ viśvāmitraḥ mahāmuniḥ
aśaknuvan dhārayitum kopam saṃtāpam āgataḥ
13. mahātejāḥ mahāmuniḥ viśvāmitraḥ evam uktvā
kopam dhārayitum aśaknuvan saṃtāpam āgataḥ
13. Having spoken thus, the greatly effulgent great sage Viśvāmitra, unable to restrain his anger, became filled with distress.
तस्य शापेन महता रम्भा शैली तदाभवत् ।
वचः श्रुत्वा च कन्दर्पो महर्षेः स च निर्गतः ॥१४॥
14. tasya śāpena mahatā rambhā śailī tadābhavat ,
vacaḥ śrutvā ca kandarpo maharṣeḥ sa ca nirgataḥ.
14. tasya śāpena mahatā rambhā śailī tadā abhavat
vacaḥ śrutvā ca kandarpaḥ maharṣeḥ saḥ ca nirgataḥ
14. rambhā tasya mahatā śāpena tadā śailī abhavat ca
maharṣeḥ vacaḥ śrutvā saḥ kandarpaḥ ca nirgataḥ
14. Due to his mighty curse, Rambha was then transformed into a stone. And having heard the great sage's words, Kama (Kandarpa) also departed.
कोपेन स महातेजास्तपो ऽपहरणे कृते ।
इन्द्रियैरजितै राम न लेभे शान्तिमात्मनः ॥१५॥
15. kopena sa mahātejāstapo'paharaṇe kṛte ,
indriyairajitai rāma na lebhe śāntimātmanaḥ.
15. kopena saḥ mahātejāḥ tapaḥ apaharaṇe kṛte
indriyaiḥ ajitaiḥ rāma na lebhe śāntim ātmanaḥ
15. rāma tapaḥ apaharaṇe kṛte saḥ mahātejāḥ kopena
ajitaiḥ indriyaiḥ ātmanaḥ śāntim na lebhe
15. O Rama, when his asceticism (tapas) was interrupted, that greatly resplendent sage, consumed by anger (kopa) and with his senses (indriya) unsubdued, did not attain peace for his inner self (ātman).
