हनुमानपि विक्रान्तः सर्वं शुश्राव तत्त्वतः ।
सीतायास्त्रिजटायाश्च राक्षसीनां च तर्जनम् ॥१॥
1. hanumānapi vikrāntaḥ sarvaṃ śuśrāva tattvataḥ ,

1. Hanuman, valorous and mighty, truly (tattva) heard everything concerning Sītā and Trijatā, including the threats from the female demons.
अवेक्षमाणस्तां देवीं देवतामिव नन्दने ।
ततो बहुविधां चिन्तां चिन्तयामास वानरः ॥२॥
2. avekṣamāṇastāṃ devīṃ devatāmiva nandane ,
tato bahuvidhāṃ cintāṃ cintayāmāsa vānaraḥ.
2. avekṣamāṇaḥ tām devīm devatām iva nandane
tataḥ bahuvidhām cintām cintayāmāsa vānaraḥ

2. Observing that lady (Sītā), who appeared like a goddess in the celestial Nandana garden, the monkey (Hanuman) then contemplated many diverse thoughts.
यां कपीनां सहस्राणि सुबहून्ययुतानि च ।
दिक्षु सर्वासु मार्गन्ते सेयमासादिता मया ॥३॥
3. yāṃ kapīnāṃ sahasrāṇi subahūnyayutāni ca ,
dikṣu sarvāsu mārgante seyamāsāditā mayā.
3. yām kapīnām sahasrāṇi subahūni ayutāni ca
dikṣu sarvāsu mārgante sā iyam āsāditā mayā

3. She, whom thousands and many tens of thousands of monkeys search for in all directions, has been found by me.
चारेण तु सुयुक्तेन शत्रोः शक्तिमवेक्षिता ।
गूढेन चरता तावदवेक्षितमिदं मया ॥४॥
4. cāreṇa tu suyuktena śatroḥ śaktimavekṣitā ,
gūḍhena caratā tāvadavekṣitamidaṃ mayā.

gūḍhena caratā tāvat avekṣitam idam mayā

4. Furthermore, the enemy's power was observed by a very capable spy. This much has been investigated by me, operating covertly.
राक्षसानां विशेषश्च पुरी चेयमवेक्षिता ।
राक्षसाधिपतेरस्य प्रभावो रावणस्य च ॥५॥
5. rākṣasānāṃ viśeṣaśca purī ceyamavekṣitā ,
rākṣasādhipaterasya prabhāvo rāvaṇasya ca.
5. rākṣasānām viśeṣaḥ ca purī ca iyam avekṣitā
rākṣasādhipateḥ asya prabhāvaḥ rāvaṇasya ca
5. ca rākṣasānām viśeṣaḥ ca iyam purī avekṣitā
ca asya rākṣasādhipateḥ rāvaṇasya prabhāvaḥ
5. Both the specific traits of the Rākṣasas and this city have been thoroughly observed. And the influence of this lord of Rākṣasas, Rāvaṇa, has also been assessed.
युक्तं तस्याप्रमेयस्य सर्वसत्त्वदयावतः ।
समाश्वासयितुं भार्यां पतिदर्शनकाङ्क्षिणीम् ॥६॥
6. yuktaṃ tasyāprameyasya sarvasattvadayāvataḥ ,
samāśvāsayituṃ bhāryāṃ patidarśanakāṅkṣiṇīm.
6. yuktam tasya aprameyasya sarvasattvadayāvataḥ
samāśvāsayitum bhāryām patidarśanakāṅkṣiṇīm
6. tasya aprameyasya sarvasattvadayāvataḥ
patidarśanakāṅkṣiṇīm bhāryām samāśvāsayitum yuktam
6. It is proper for that immeasurable one, who shows compassion for all beings (sattva), to console his wife, who longs for the sight of her husband.
अहमाश्वासयाम्येनां पूर्णचन्द्रनिभाननाम् ।
अदृष्टदुःखां दुःखस्य न ह्यन्तमधिगच्छतीम् ॥७॥
7. ahamāśvāsayāmyenāṃ pūrṇacandranibhānanām ,
adṛṣṭaduḥkhāṃ duḥkhasya na hyantamadhigacchatīm.
7. aham āśvāsayāmi enām pūrṇacandranibhānanām
adṛṣṭaduḥkhām duḥkhasya na hi antam adhigacchatīm
7. aham pūrṇacandranibhānanām adṛṣṭaduḥkhām duḥkhasya
antam na hi adhigacchatīm enām āśvāsayāmi
7. I must reassure her, whose face resembles the full moon, who has not experienced suffering and therefore certainly does not comprehend its full extent.
यदि ह्यहमिमां देवीं शोकोपहतचेतनाम् ।
अनाश्वास्य गमिष्यामि दोषवद्गमनं भवेत् ॥८॥
8. yadi hyahamimāṃ devīṃ śokopahatacetanām ,
anāśvāsya gamiṣyāmi doṣavadgamanaṃ bhavet.
8. yadi hi aham imām devīm śokopahatacetanām
anāśvāsya gamiṣyāmi doṣavat gamanam bhavet
8. yadi hi aham imām devīm śokopahatacetanām anāśvāsya gamiṣyāmi,
doṣavat gamanam bhavet
8. If indeed I were to leave without consoling this princess, whose mind is overwhelmed by grief, then my departure would be a mistake.
गते हि मयि तत्रेयं राजपुत्री यशस्विनी ।
परित्राणमविन्दन्ती जानकी जीवितं त्यजेत् ॥९॥
9. gate hi mayi tatreyaṃ rājaputrī yaśasvinī ,
paritrāṇamavindantī jānakī jīvitaṃ tyajet.
9. gate hi mayi tatra iyam rājaputrī yaśasvinī
paritrāṇam avindantī jānakī jīvitam tyajet
9. hi mayi tatra gate,
iyam rājaputrī yaśasvinī jānakī paritrāṇam avindantī jīvitam tyajet
9. Indeed, if I depart from here, this glorious princess, Jānakī, finding no protection, would abandon her life.
मया च स महाबाहुः पूर्णचन्द्रनिभाननः ।
समाश्वासयितुं न्याय्यः सीतादर्शनलालसः ॥१०॥
10. mayā ca sa mahābāhuḥ pūrṇacandranibhānanaḥ ,
samāśvāsayituṃ nyāyyaḥ sītādarśanalālasaḥ.
10. mayā ca saḥ mahābāhuḥ pūrṇacandranibhānanaḥ
samāśvāsayitum nyāyyaḥ sīṭādarśanalālasaḥ
10. ca mayā saḥ mahābāhuḥ pūrṇacandranibhānanaḥ
sīṭādarśanalālasaḥ samāśvāsayitum nyāyyaḥ
10. And he, the mighty-armed one, whose face is like the full moon, eager to see Sītā, ought also to be consoled by me.
निशाचरीणां प्रत्यक्षमक्षमं चाभिभाषणम् ।
कथं नु खलु कर्तव्यमिदं कृच्छ्र गतो ह्यहम् ॥११॥
11. niśācarīṇāṃ pratyakṣamakṣamaṃ cābhibhāṣaṇam ,
kathaṃ nu khalu kartavyamidaṃ kṛcchra gato hyaham.
11. niśācarīṇām pratyakṣam akṣamam ca abhibhāṣaṇam katham
nu khalu kartavyam idam kṛcchram gataḥ hi aham
11. Direct conversation with the female demons is impossible. How indeed should I accomplish this task, as I have fallen into great difficulty?
अनेन रात्रिशेषेण यदि नाश्वास्यते मया ।
सर्वथा नास्ति संदेहः परित्यक्ष्यति जीवितम् ॥१२॥
12. anena rātriśeṣeṇa yadi nāśvāsyate mayā ,
sarvathā nāsti saṃdehaḥ parityakṣyati jīvitam.
12. anena rātriśeṣeṇa yadi na āśvāsyate mayā
sarvathā na asti saṃdehaḥ parityakṣyati jīvitam
12. If she is not consoled by me within this remaining part of the night, there is absolutely no doubt that she will abandon her life.
रामश्च यदि पृच्छेन्मां किं मां सीताब्रवीद्वचः ।
किमहं तं प्रतिब्रूयामसंभाष्य सुमध्यमाम् ॥१३॥
13. rāmaśca yadi pṛcchenmāṃ kiṃ māṃ sītābravīdvacaḥ ,
kimahaṃ taṃ pratibrūyāmasaṃbhāṣya sumadhyamām.
13. rāmaḥ ca yadi pṛcchet mām kim mām sītā abravīt vacaḥ
kim aham tam pratibrūyām asaṃbhāṣya sumadhyamām
13. And if Rāma should ask me, 'What words did Sītā speak to me?', what would I say to him, without having spoken to the slender-waisted one (Sītā)?
सीतासंदेशरहितं मामितस्त्वरया गतम् ।
निर्दहेदपि काकुत्स्थः क्रुद्धस्तीव्रेण चक्षुषा ॥१४॥
14. sītāsaṃdeśarahitaṃ māmitastvarayā gatam ,
nirdahedapi kākutsthaḥ kruddhastīvreṇa cakṣuṣā.
14. sītāsaṃdeśarahitam mām itaḥ tvarayā gatam
nirdhet api kākutsthaḥ kruddhaḥ tīvreṇa cakṣuṣā
14. Rāma (Kākutstha), enraged, would burn me with his fierce gaze, if I were to return from here swiftly without Sītā's message.
यदि चेद् योजयिष्यामि भर्तारं रामकारणात् ।
व्यर्थमागमनं तस्य ससैन्यस्य भविष्यति ॥१५॥
15. yadi ced yojayiṣyāmi bhartāraṃ rāmakāraṇāt ,
vyarthamāgamanaṃ tasya sasainyasya bhaviṣyati.
15. yadi cet yojayiṣyāmi bhartāram rāmakāraṇāt
vyartham āgamanam tasya sasainyasya bhaviṣyati
15. yadi cet rāmakāraṇāt bhartāram yojayiṣyāmi,
tasya sasainyasya āgamanam vyartham bhaviṣyati
15. If I were to unite (Sītā with) her husband (Rāma) for Rāma's sake, then his coming with his army would become futile.
अन्तरं त्वहमासाद्य राक्षसीनामिह स्थितः ।
शनैराश्वासयिष्यामि संतापबहुलामिमाम् ॥१६॥
16. antaraṃ tvahamāsādya rākṣasīnāmiha sthitaḥ ,
śanairāśvāsayiṣyāmi saṃtāpabahulāmimām.
16. antaram tu aham āsādya rākṣasīnām iha sthitaḥ
śanaiḥ āśvāsayiṣyāmi saṃtāpabahulām imām
16. aham tu iha rākṣasīnām antaram āsādya sthitaḥ,
saṃtāpabahulām imām śanaiḥ āśvāsayiṣyāmi
16. Having found an opportunity while present here among the female demons, I will gently console this one (Sītā), who is overwhelmed with sorrow.
अहं ह्यतितनुश्चैव वनरश्च विशेषतः ।
वाचं चोदाहरिष्यामि मानुषीमिह संस्कृताम् ॥१७॥
17. ahaṃ hyatitanuścaiva vanaraśca viśeṣataḥ ,
vācaṃ codāhariṣyāmi mānuṣīmiha saṃskṛtām.
17. aham hi atitanuḥ ca eva vānaraḥ ca viśeṣataḥ
vācam ca udāhariṣyāmi mānuṣīm iha saṃskṛtām
17. hi,
aham atitanuḥ ca eva,
ca viśeṣataḥ vānaraḥ.
iha mānuṣīm saṃskṛtām vācam ca udāhariṣyāmi
17. Indeed, I am exceedingly small and, furthermore, a monkey. So, here I will utter refined human speech.
यदि वाचं प्रदास्यामि द्विजातिरिव संस्कृताम् ।
रावणं मन्यमाना मां सीता भीता भविष्यति ॥१८॥
18. yadi vācaṃ pradāsyāmi dvijātiriva saṃskṛtām ,
rāvaṇaṃ manyamānā māṃ sītā bhītā bhaviṣyati.
18. yadi vācam pradāsyāmi dvijātiḥ iva saṃskṛtām
rāvaṇam manyamānā mām sītā bhītā bhaviṣyati
18. yadi aham dvijātiḥ iva saṃskṛtām vācam pradāsyāmi,
rāvaṇam mām manyamānā sītā bhītā bhaviṣyati
18. If I utter refined speech like a Brahmin, Sītā, mistaking me for Rāvaṇa, will become frightened.
अवश्यमेव वक्तव्यं मानुषं वाक्यमर्थवत् ।
मया सान्त्वयितुं शक्या नान्यथेयमनिन्दिता ॥१९॥
19. avaśyameva vaktavyaṃ mānuṣaṃ vākyamarthavat ,
mayā sāntvayituṃ śakyā nānyatheyamaninditā.
19. avaśyam eva vaktavyam mānuṣam vākyam arthavat
mayā sāntvayitum śakyā na anyathā iyam aninditā
19. mayā avaśyam eva arthavat mānuṣam vākyam vaktavyam
anyathā iyam aninditā sāntvayitum na śakyā
19. I must certainly speak a meaningful, human statement. Otherwise, this blameless lady (Sita) cannot be consoled by me.
सेयमालोक्य मे रूपं जानकी भाषितं तथा ।
रक्षोभिस्त्रासिता पूर्वं भूयस्त्रासं गमिष्यति ॥२०॥
20. seyamālokya me rūpaṃ jānakī bhāṣitaṃ tathā ,
rakṣobhistrāsitā pūrvaṃ bhūyastrāsaṃ gamiṣyati.
20. sā iyam ālokya me rūpam jānakī bhāṣitam tathā
rakṣobhiḥ trāsitā pūrvam bhūyaḥ trāsam gamiṣyati
20. sā iyam jānakī pūrvam rakṣobhiḥ trāsitā me rūpam
tathā bhāṣitam ālokya bhūyaḥ trāsam gamiṣyati
20. That Janaki (Sita), having previously been terrified by rākṣasas, will experience fear again upon seeing my form and hearing my speech.
ततो जातपरित्रासा शब्दं कुर्यान्मनस्विनी ।
जानमाना विशालाक्षी रावणं कामरूपिणम् ॥२१॥
21. tato jātaparitrāsā śabdaṃ kuryānmanasvinī ,
jānamānā viśālākṣī rāvaṇaṃ kāmarūpiṇam.
21. tataḥ jātaparitrāsā śabdam kuryāt manasvinī
jānamānā viśālākṣī rāvaṇam kāmarūpiṇam
21. tataḥ manasvinī viśālākṣī jātaparitrāsā
kāmarūpiṇam rāvaṇam jānamānā śabdam kuryāt
21. Then, this high-minded, wide-eyed lady (Sita), overcome by great fear, and recognizing Rāvaṇa (the shape-shifter), would cry out.
सीतया च कृते शब्दे सहसा राक्षसीगणः ।
नानाप्रहरणो घोरः समेयादन्तकोपमः ॥२२॥
22. sītayā ca kṛte śabde sahasā rākṣasīgaṇaḥ ,
nānāpraharaṇo ghoraḥ sameyādantakopamaḥ.
22. sītayā ca kṛte śabde sahasā rākṣasīgaṇaḥ
nānāpraharaṇaḥ ghoraḥ sameyāt antakopamaḥ
22. ca sītayā śabde kṛte sahasā nānāpraharaṇaḥ
ghoraḥ antakopamaḥ rākṣasīgaṇaḥ sameyāt
22. And if a cry is made by Sita, suddenly the dreadful host of female (rākṣasī) attendants, bearing various weapons and resembling Yama (the god of death), would gather.
ततो मां संपरिक्षिप्य सर्वतो विकृताननाः ।
वधे च ग्रहणे चैव कुर्युर्यत्नं यथाबलम् ॥२३॥
23. tato māṃ saṃparikṣipya sarvato vikṛtānanāḥ ,
vadhe ca grahaṇe caiva kuryuryatnaṃ yathābalam.
23. tataḥ mām saṃparikṣipya sarvataḥ vikṛtānanāḥ
vadhe ca grahaṇe ca eva kuryuḥ yatnam yathābalam
23. vikṛtānanāḥ tataḥ mām sarvataḥ saṃparikṣipya
vadhe ca grahaṇe ca eva yathābalam yatnam kuryuḥ
23. Those with distorted faces, having completely surrounded me from all sides, would then make an effort, to the best of their ability, to kill and capture me.
तं मां शाखाः प्रशाखाश्च स्कन्धांश्चोत्तमशाखिनाम् ।
दृष्ट्वा विपरिधावन्तं भवेयुर्भयशङ्किताः ॥२४॥
24. taṃ māṃ śākhāḥ praśākhāśca skandhāṃścottamaśākhinām ,
dṛṣṭvā viparidhāvantaṃ bhaveyurbhayaśaṅkitāḥ.
24. tam mām śākhāḥ praśākhāḥ ca skandhān ca uttamasākhinām
dṛṣṭvā viparidhāvantam bhaveyuḥ bhayaśaṅkitāḥ
24. uttamasākhinām śākhāḥ ca praśākhāḥ ca skandhān ca (etaiḥ saha) viparidhāvantam mām tam dṛṣṭvā,
bhayaśaṅkitāḥ bhaveyuḥ
24. Upon seeing me running among the branches, twigs, and main trunks of the excellent trees, they would become apprehensive with fear.
मम रूपं च संप्रेक्ष्य वनं विचरतो महत् ।
राक्षस्यो भयवित्रस्ता भवेयुर्विकृताननाः ॥२५॥
25. mama rūpaṃ ca saṃprekṣya vanaṃ vicarato mahat ,
rākṣasyo bhayavitrastā bhaveyurvikṛtānanāḥ.
25. mama rūpam ca samprekṣya vanam vicarataḥ mahat
rākṣasyaḥ bhayavitrastāḥ bhaveyuḥ vikṛtānanāḥ
25. vanam vicarataḥ mama mahat rūpam ca samprekṣya,
bhayavitrastāḥ rākṣasyaḥ vikṛtānanāḥ bhaveyuḥ
25. And upon fully perceiving my huge form as I roam through the forest, the demonesses, stricken with terror, would become disfigured in their faces.
ततः कुर्युः समाह्वानं राक्षस्यो रक्षसामपि ।
राक्षसेन्द्रनियुक्तानां राक्षसेन्द्रनिवेशने ॥२६॥
26. tataḥ kuryuḥ samāhvānaṃ rākṣasyo rakṣasāmapi ,
rākṣasendraniyuktānāṃ rākṣasendraniveśane.
26. tataḥ kuryuḥ samāhvānam rākṣasyaḥ rakṣasām
api rākṣasendraniyuktānām rākṣasendraniveśane
26. tataḥ rākṣasyaḥ rākṣasendraniveśane,
rākṣasendraniyuktānām rakṣasām api samāhvānam kuryuḥ
26. Then the demonesses would summon the rākṣasas, especially those appointed by the lord of rākṣasas, within the lord of rākṣasas' dwelling.
ते शूलशरनिस्त्रिंश विविधायुधपाणयः ।
आपतेयुर्विमर्दे ऽस्मिन् वेगेनोद्विग्नकारिणः ॥२७॥
27. te śūlaśaranistriṃśa vividhāyudhapāṇayaḥ ,
āpateyurvimarde'smin vegenodvignakāriṇaḥ.
27. te śūlaśaranistriṃśa vividhāyudhapāṇayaḥ
āpateyuḥ vimarde asmin vegena udvignakāriṇaḥ
27. te śūlaśaranistriṃśa vividhāyudhapāṇayaḥ
udvignakāriṇaḥ vegena asmin vimarde āpateyuḥ
27. They, carrying various weapons such as spears, arrows, and swords, might rush into this battle, causing great alarm with their speed.
संक्रुद्धस्तैस्तु परितो विधमन् रक्षसां बलम् ।
शक्नुयं न तु संप्राप्तुं परं पारं महोदधेः ॥२८॥
28. saṃkruddhastaistu parito vidhaman rakṣasāṃ balam ,
śaknuyaṃ na tu saṃprāptuṃ paraṃ pāraṃ mahodadheḥ.
28. saṃkruddhaḥ taiḥ tu paritaḥ vidhaman rakṣasām balam
śaknuyam na tu saṃprāptum param pāram mahodadheḥ
28. saṃkruddhaḥ taiḥ tu paritaḥ rakṣasām balam vidhaman
na tu mahodadheḥ param pāram saṃprāptum śaknuyam
28. If I become enraged by them and scatter the army of the rākṣasas all around, I would still not be able to reach the far shore of the great ocean.
मां वा गृह्णीयुराप्लुत्य बहवः शीघ्रकारिणः ।
स्यादियं चागृहीतार्था मम च ग्रहणं भवेत् ॥२९॥
29. māṃ vā gṛhṇīyurāplutya bahavaḥ śīghrakāriṇaḥ ,
syādiyaṃ cāgṛhītārthā mama ca grahaṇaṃ bhavet.
29. mām vā gṛhṇīyuḥ āplutya bahavaḥ śīghrakāriṇaḥ
syāt iyam ca agṛhītārthā mama ca grahaṇam bhavet
29. vā bahavaḥ śīghrakāriṇaḥ āplutya mām gṛhṇīyuḥ ca
iyam agṛhītārthā syāt ca mama grahaṇam bhavet
29. Alternatively, many swift-acting (rākṣasas) might leap upon and seize me. In that case, this objective would remain unachieved, and my capture would take place.
हिंसाभिरुचयो हिंस्युरिमां वा जनकात्मजाम् ।
विपन्नं स्यात्ततः कार्यं रामसुग्रीवयोरिदम् ॥३०॥
30. hiṃsābhirucayo hiṃsyurimāṃ vā janakātmajām ,
vipannaṃ syāttataḥ kāryaṃ rāmasugrīvayoridam.
30. hiṃsābhirucayaḥ hiṃsyuḥ imām vā janakātmajām
vipannam syāt tataḥ kāryam rāmasugrīvayoḥ idam
30. vā hiṃsābhirucayaḥ imām janakātmajām hiṃsyuḥ
tataḥ idam rāmasugrīvayoḥ kāryam vipannam syāt
30. Alternatively, those who delight in violence might harm this daughter of Janaka. In that event, this mission of Rāma and Sugrīva would be ruined.
उद्देशे नष्टमार्गे ऽस्मिन् राक्षसैः परिवारिते ।
सागरेण परिक्षिप्ते गुप्ते वसति जानकी ॥३१॥
31. uddeśe naṣṭamārge'smin rākṣasaiḥ parivārite ,
sāgareṇa parikṣipte gupte vasati jānakī.
31. uddeśe naṣṭamārge asmin rākṣasaiḥ parivārite
sāgareṇa parikṣipte gupte vasati jānakī
31. jānakī asmin naṣṭamārge rākṣasaiḥ parivārite
sāgareṇa parikṣipte gupte uddeśe vasati
31. Janaki resides secretly in this inaccessible region, which is surrounded by rākṣasas and encompassed by the ocean.
विशस्ते वा गृहीते वा रक्षोभिर्मयि संयुगे ।
नान्यं पश्यामि रामस्य सहायं कार्यसाधने ॥३२॥
32. viśaste vā gṛhīte vā rakṣobhirmayi saṃyuge ,
nānyaṃ paśyāmi rāmasya sahāyaṃ kāryasādhane.
32. viśaste vā gṛhīte vā rakṣobhiḥ mayi saṃyuge
na anyam paśyāmi rāmasya sahāyam kāryasādhane
32. mayi rakṣobhiḥ saṃyuge viśaste vā gṛhīte vā (sati),
rāmasya kāryasādhane anyam sahāyam na paśyāmi
32. Should I be slain or captured by the rākṣasas in battle, I see no other helper for Rama in accomplishing his objective.
विमृशंश्च न पश्यामि यो हते मयि वानरः ।
शतयोजनविस्तीर्णं लङ्घयेत महोदधिम् ॥३३॥
33. vimṛśaṃśca na paśyāmi yo hate mayi vānaraḥ ,
śatayojanavistīrṇaṃ laṅghayeta mahodadhim.
33. vimṛśan ca na paśyāmi yaḥ hate mayi vānaraḥ
śatayojanavistīrṇam laṅghayeta mahodadhim
33. vimṛśan ca mayi hate (sati) yaḥ vānaraḥ śatayojanavistīrṇam mahodadhim laṅghayeta,
(tam) na paśyāmi
33. And even after reflecting, I do not see any other monkey who, after I am slain, would be able to cross the great ocean, which is a hundred yojanas wide.
कामं हन्तुं समर्थो ऽस्मि सहस्राण्यपि रक्षसाम् ।
न तु शक्ष्यामि संप्राप्तुं परं पारं महोदधेः ॥३४॥
34. kāmaṃ hantuṃ samartho'smi sahasrāṇyapi rakṣasām ,
na tu śakṣyāmi saṃprāptuṃ paraṃ pāraṃ mahodadheḥ.
34. kāmam hantum samarthaḥ asmi sahasrāṇi api rakṣasām
na tu śakṣyāmi samprāptum param pāram mahodadheḥ
34. kāmam sahasrāṇi api rakṣasām hantum samarthaḥ asmi,
tu param mahodadheḥ pāram samprāptum na śakṣyāmi
34. Indeed, I am capable of killing even thousands of rākṣasas. However, I will not be able to reach the far shore of the great ocean.
असत्यानि च युद्धानि संशयो मे न रोचते ।
कश्च निःसंशयं कार्यं कुर्यात् प्राज्ञः ससंशयम् ॥३५॥
35. asatyāni ca yuddhāni saṃśayo me na rocate ,
kaśca niḥsaṃśayaṃ kāryaṃ kuryāt prājñaḥ sasaṃśayam.

35. I do not approve of unrighteous conflicts and uncertainty. What wise person would undertake a task that should be certain, while himself being doubtful?
एष दोषो महान् हि स्यान्मम सीताभिभाषणे ।
प्राणत्यागश्च वैदेह्या भवेदनभिभाषणे ॥३६॥
36. eṣa doṣo mahān hi syānmama sītābhibhāṣaṇe ,
prāṇatyāgaśca vaidehyā bhavedanabhibhāṣaṇe.
36. eṣaḥ doṣaḥ mahān hi syāt mama sītābhibhāṣaṇe
prāṇatyāgaḥ ca vaidehyāḥ bhavet anabhibhāṣaṇe
36. mama sītābhibhāṣaṇe eṣaḥ mahān doṣaḥ hi syāt
ca anabhibhāṣaṇe vaidehyāḥ prāṇatyāgaḥ bhavet
36. Indeed, this would be a great fault if I were to speak with Sītā. And the abandonment of life (prāṇatyāga) by Vaidehī would occur if I were not to speak with her.
भूताश्चार्था विनश्यन्ति देशकालविरोधिताः ।
विक्लवं दूतमासाद्य तमः सूर्योदये यथा ॥३७॥
37. bhūtāścārthā vinaśyanti deśakālavirodhitāḥ ,
viklavaṃ dūtamāsādya tamaḥ sūryodaye yathā.
37. bhūtāḥ ca arthāḥ vinaśyanti deśakālavirodhitāḥ
viklavam dūtam āsādya tamaḥ sūryodaye yathā
37. deśakālavirodhitāḥ bhūtāḥ arthāḥ viklavam
dūtam āsādya vinaśyanti yathā sūryodaye tamaḥ
37. Achieved objectives are ruined if they are ill-suited to the place and time (deśakāla-virodhitāḥ), just as darkness disappears at sunrise upon encountering a confused messenger.
अर्थानर्थान्तरे बुद्धिर्निश्चितापि न शोभते ।
घातयन्ति हि कार्याणि दूताः पण्डितमानिनः ॥३८॥
38. arthānarthāntare buddhirniścitāpi na śobhate ,
ghātayanti hi kāryāṇi dūtāḥ paṇḍitamāninaḥ.

ghātayanti hi kāryāṇi dūtāḥ paṇḍitamāninaḥ
38. arthānarthāntare niścitā api buddhiḥ na śobhate

38. Even a firm intellect does not shine (is not effective) in matters distinguishing between advantage and disadvantage. Indeed, messengers who consider themselves wise only spoil important tasks.
न विनश्येत् कथं कार्यं वैक्लव्यं न कथं भवेत् ।
लङ्घनं च समुद्रस्य कथं नु न वृथा भवेत् ॥३९॥
39. na vinaśyet kathaṃ kāryaṃ vaiklavyaṃ na kathaṃ bhavet ,
laṅghanaṃ ca samudrasya kathaṃ nu na vṛthā bhavet.
39. na vinaśyet katham kāryam vaiklavyam na katham bhavet
laṅghanam ca samudrasya katham nu na vṛthā bhavet
39. kāryam katham na vinaśyet vaiklavyam katham na bhavet
ca samudrasya laṅghanam katham nu na vṛthā bhavet
39. How should the mission not fail? How can distress be avoided? And how can this crossing of the ocean not be in vain?
कथं नु खलु वाक्यं मे शृणुयान्नोद्विजेत च ।
इति संचिन्त्य हनुमांश्चकार मतिमान्मतिम् ॥४०॥
40. kathaṃ nu khalu vākyaṃ me śṛṇuyānnodvijeta ca ,
iti saṃcintya hanumāṃścakāra matimānmatim.
40. katham nu khalu vākyam me śṛṇuyāt na udvijeta
ca iti saṃcintya hanumān cakāra matimān matim
40. katham nu khalu me vākyam śṛṇuyāt ca na udvijeta
iti saṃcintya matimān hanumān matim cakāra
40. How indeed can she hear my words and not be alarmed? Having pondered this, the intelligent Hanuman made a decision.
राममक्लिष्टकर्माणं स्वबन्धुमनुकीर्तयन् ।
नैनामुद्वेजयिष्यामि तद्बन्धुगतमानसाम् ॥४१॥
41. rāmamakliṣṭakarmāṇaṃ svabandhumanukīrtayan ,
naināmudvejayiṣyāmi tadbandhugatamānasām.
41. rāmam akliṣṭakarmāṇam svabandhum anukīrtayan
na enām udvejayiṣyāmi tatbandhugatamānasām
41. akliṣṭakarmāṇam svabandhum rāmam anukīrtayan
tatbandhugatamānasām enām na udvejayiṣyāmi
41. By proclaiming Rama, who performs unblemished deeds and is her own kinsman, I will not alarm her, whose mind is fixed on her kinsman.
इक्ष्वाकूणां वरिष्ठस्य रामस्य विदितात्मनः ।
शुभानि धर्मयुक्तानि वचनानि समर्पयन् ॥४२॥
42. ikṣvākūṇāṃ variṣṭhasya rāmasya viditātmanaḥ ,
śubhāni dharmayuktāni vacanāni samarpayan.

śubhāni dharmayuktāni vacanāni samarpayan

42. Delivering auspicious words imbued with natural law (dharma), from Rama, the foremost among the Ikshvakus, who knows his true self (ātman).
श्रावयिष्यामि सर्वाणि मधुरां प्रब्रुवन् गिरम् ।
श्रद्धास्यति यथा हीयं तथा सर्वं समादधे ॥४३॥
43. śrāvayiṣyāmi sarvāṇi madhurāṃ prabruvan giram ,
śraddhāsyati yathā hīyaṃ tathā sarvaṃ samādadhe.
43. śrāvayiṣyāmi sarvāṇi madhurām prabruvan giram
yathā hi iyam śraddhāsyati tathā sarvam samādadhe
43. prabruvan madhurām giram sarvāṇi śrāvayiṣyāmi
yathā iyam hi śraddhāsyati tathā sarvam samādadhe
43. I will speak sweet words and narrate everything, arranging it so that she (Sītā) will certainly believe.
इति स बहुविधं महानुभावो जगतिपतेः प्रमदामवेक्षमाणः ।
मधुरमवितथं जगाद वाक्यं द्रुमविटपान्तरमास्थितो हनूमान् ॥४४॥
44. iti sa bahuvidhaṃ mahānubhāvo jagatipateḥ pramadāmavekṣamāṇaḥ ,
madhuramavitathaṃ jagāda vākyaṃ drumaviṭapāntaramāsthito hanūmān.
44. iti saḥ bahuvidham mahānubhāvaḥ
jagatipateḥ pramadam avekṣamāṇaḥ
madhuram avitatham jagāda vākyam
drumaviṭapāntaram āsthitaḥ hanūmān
44. iti saḥ mahānubhāvaḥ hanūmān

44. Thus, the great-souled Hanūmān, observing the wife (pramadā) of the lord of the world (jagatīpati) while perched among the tree branches, spoke sweet and truthful words.
