But the monkey Sugriva, greatly satisfied by those words, then spoke this to Rama, Lakshmana's elder brother.
सर्वथाहमनुग्राह्यो देवतानामसंशयः ।
उपपन्नगुणोपेतः सखा यस्य भवान्मम ॥२॥

Without a doubt, I am entirely favored by the gods, because you, my friend, are endowed with all suitable qualities.
शक्यं खलु भवेद् राम सहायेन त्वयानघ ।
सुरराज्यमपि प्राप्तुं स्वराज्यं किं पुनः प्रभो ॥३॥

3. śakyaṃ khalu bhaved rāma sahāyena tvayānagha ,

O Rama, sinless one, with your help, it would surely be possible to attain even the kingdom of the gods; how much more so then, O lord, one's own kingdom?
सो ऽहं सभाज्यो बन्धूनां सुहृदां चैव राघव ।
यस्याग्निसाक्षिकं मित्रं लब्धं राघववंशजम् ॥४॥

O Rama, I am indeed worthy of honor among my kinsmen and friends, for I have gained a friend, witnessed by fire, who is born of Raghu's lineage.
अहमप्यनुरूपस्ते वयस्यो ज्ञास्यसे शनैः ।
न तु वक्तुं समर्थो ऽहं स्वयमात्मगतान् गुणान् ॥५॥

5. ahamapyanurūpaste vayasyo jñāsyase śanaiḥ ,

I am also a suitable companion for you; you will realize this gradually. But I myself am not capable of speaking about my own inherent qualities (ātman).
महात्मनां तु भूयिष्ठं त्वद्विधानां कृतात्मनाम् ।
निश्चला भवति प्रीतिर्धैर्यमात्मवतामिव ॥६॥

6. mahātmanāṃ tu bhūyiṣṭhaṃ tvadvidhānāṃ kṛtātmanām ,

However, the affection of great-souled individuals (mahātman) like you, who have disciplined their inner selves (kṛtātman), becomes unwavering, much like the steadfast resolve of those who are self-possessed (ātmavatām).
रजतं वा सुवर्णं वा वस्त्राण्याभरणानि वा ।
अविभक्तानि साधूनामवगच्छन्ति साधवः ॥७॥

7. rajataṃ vā suvarṇaṃ vā vastrāṇyābharaṇāni vā ,
avibhaktāni sādhūnāmavagacchanti sādhavaḥ.

The virtuous (sādhavaḥ) understand that silver or gold, clothes or ornaments, are held in common (avibhaktāni) among righteous people (sādhūnām).
आढ्यो वापि दरिद्रो वा दुःखितः सुखितो ऽपि वा ।
निर्दोषो वा सदोषो वा वयस्यः परमा गतिः ॥८॥

8. āḍhyo vāpi daridro vā duḥkhitaḥ sukhito'pi vā ,

8.
Whether wealthy or poor, distressed or happy, innocent or guilty, a true friend (vayasyaḥ) is considered the ultimate refuge (paramā gatiḥ).
धनत्यागः सुखत्यागो देहत्यागो ऽपि वा पुनः ।
वयस्यार्थे प्रवर्तन्ते स्नेहं दृष्ट्वा तथाविधम् ॥९॥

Abandonment of wealth, sacrifice of joy, or even giving up one's life - these acts are undertaken for the sake of a friend (vayasyārthe), when one perceives such a profound bond (sneham tathāvidham).
तत्तथेत्यब्रवीद् रामः सुग्रीवं प्रियवादिनम् ।
लक्ष्मणस्याग्रतो लक्ष्म्या वासवस्येव धीमतः ॥१०॥

10. tattathetyabravīd rāmaḥ sugrīvaṃ priyavādinam ,

In front of Lakṣmaṇa, Rāma, radiant like the intelligent Vasava (Indra), replied, "So be it," to Sugrīva, who spoke with affection.
ततो रामं स्थितं दृष्ट्वा लक्ष्मणं च महाबलम् ।
सुग्रीवः सर्वतश्चक्षुर्वने लोलमपातयत् ॥११॥

11. tato rāmaṃ sthitaṃ dṛṣṭvā lakṣmaṇaṃ ca mahābalam ,

Then, seeing Rāma and the mighty Lakṣmaṇa standing there, Sugrīva cast his restless gaze all around the forest.
स ददर्श ततः सालमविदूरे हरीश्वरः ।
सुपुष्पमीषत्पत्राढ्यं भ्रमरैरुपशोभितम् ॥१२॥

12. sa dadarśa tataḥ sālamavidūre harīśvaraḥ ,
supuṣpamīṣatpatrāḍhyaṃ bhramarairupaśobhitam.

Then, that lord of monkeys (Sugrīva) saw a Sāla tree not far away, profusely flowering, with young leaves, and beautified by humming bees.
तस्यैकां पर्णबहुलां भङ्क्त्वा शाखां सुपुष्पिताम् ।
सालस्यास्तीर्य सुग्रीवो निषसाद सराघवः ॥१३॥

13. tasyaikāṃ parṇabahulāṃ bhaṅktvā śākhāṃ supuṣpitām ,

Having broken off a single, leafy, and profusely flowering branch of that Sāla tree, Sugrīva spread it out and sat down with Rāma.
तावासीनौ ततो दृष्ट्वा हनूमानपि लक्ष्मणम् ।
सालशाखां समुत्पाट्य विनीतमुपवेशयत् ॥१४॥

14. tāvāsīnau tato dṛṣṭvā hanūmānapi lakṣmaṇam ,

Then, seeing them both seated, Hanuman respectfully uprooted a Sāla tree branch and made Lakshmana sit upon it.
ततः प्रहृष्टः सुग्रीवः श्लक्ष्णं मधुरया गिरा ।
उवाच प्रणयाद् रामं हर्षव्याकुलिताक्षरम् ॥१५॥

Then, greatly pleased, Sugriva lovingly spoke to Rama in a sweet, gentle voice, his words trembling with joy.
अहं विनिकृतो भ्रात्रा चराम्येष भयार्दितः ।
ऋश्यमूकं गिरिवरं हृतभार्यः सुदुःखितः ॥१६॥

16. ahaṃ vinikṛto bhrātrā carāmyeṣa bhayārditaḥ ,

aham vinikṛtaḥ bhrātrā carāmi eṣaḥ bhayārditaḥ

I, wronged by my brother, wander about here, afflicted by fear. My wife has been abducted, and I am deeply sorrowful on this excellent Rishyamuka mountain.
सो ऽहं त्रस्तो भये मग्नो वसाम्युद्भ्रान्तचेतनः ।
वालिना निकृतो भ्रात्रा कृतवैरश्च राघव ॥१७॥

17. so'haṃ trasto bhaye magno vasāmyudbhrāntacetanaḥ ,

O Raghava, I am that very person, terrified and immersed in fear, whose mind is bewildered, having been wronged by my brother Vali, and having enmity (with him).

ममापि त्वमनाथस्य प्रसादं कर्तुमर्हसि ॥१८॥

O bestower of fearlessness upon all the worlds, you should also show favor to me, who is tormented by fear of Valin and is helpless.
एवमुक्तस्तु तेजस्वी धर्मज्ञो धर्मवत्सलः ।

Thus addressed, the glorious descendant of Kakutstha (Kākutstha), who understood natural law (dharma) and was devoted to it, replied to Sugriva as if with a smile.
उपकारफलं मित्रमपकारो ऽरिलक्षणम् ।
अद्यैव तं हनिष्यामि तव भार्यापहारिणम् ॥२०॥

A true friend is characterized by helpful deeds, whereas hostility marks an enemy. Today itself, I will kill him, the one who abducted your wife.
इमे हि मे महावेगाः पत्रिणस्तिग्मतेजसः ।
कार्तिकेयवनोद्भूताः शरा हेमविभूषिताः ॥२१॥

Indeed, these arrows of mine are of tremendous speed and fierce brilliance; they have originated from Kartikeya's forest and are adorned with gold.

They were covered with heron feathers, resembling the thunderbolt of Mahendra (Indra), well-jointed, very sharp-pointed, and like angry serpents.

Behold Vali, your foe masquerading as a brother, who committed a grave offense; see him struck down by arrows, like a shattered mountain.
राघवस्य वचः श्रुत्वा सुग्रीवो वाहिनीपतिः ।

Having heard the words of Rama (rāghava), Sugriva, the commander of the army, experienced incomparable joy and exclaimed, "Excellent! Excellent!"
रामशोकाभिभूतो ऽहं शोकार्तानां भवान् गतिः ।
वयस्य इति कृत्वा हि त्वय्यहं परिदेवये ॥२५॥

I am overcome with grief for Rama. You are the refuge for those afflicted by sorrow. Indeed, considering you my friend, I confide in you.
त्वं हि पाणिप्रदानेन वयस्यो सो ऽग्निसाक्षिकः ।
कृतः प्राणैर्बहुमतः सत्येनापि शपाम्यहम् ॥२६॥

Indeed, by extending your hand (in friendship), you became my friend, with fire as our witness. You are held in great esteem, dearer than my own life; I swear this even by truth.

And treating you as a friend, I speak confidently about the sorrow residing within me, which constantly burns my mind.

Having spoken these words, his eyes clouded by tears, and with a voice choked by tears, he was unable to speak loudly.

But Sugriva, in the presence of Rama, suddenly restrained the surge of tears that had come like the rush of a river, holding them back with fortitude.
संनिगृह्य तु तं बाष्पं प्रमृज्य नयने शुभे ।
विनिःश्वस्य च तेजस्वी राघवं पुनरब्रवीत् ॥३०॥

Having restrained those tears, wiped his beautiful eyes, and sighed deeply, the radiant one spoke again to Rāghava (Rāma).
पुराहं वलिना राम राज्यात् स्वादवरोपितः ।
परुषाणि च संश्राव्य निर्धूतो ऽस्मि बलीयसा ॥३१॥

O Rāma, I was formerly dethroned from my own kingdom by Vali. And after he spoke harsh words to me, I was expelled by that more powerful one.
हृता भार्या च मे तेन प्राणेभ्यो ऽपि गरीयसी ।
सुहृदश्च मदीया ये संयता बन्धनेषु ते ॥३२॥

And my wife, who was dearer to me even than my life, was abducted by him. Moreover, those who were my friends, they are now held in bonds.
यत्नवांश्च सुदुष्टात्मा मद्विनाशाय राघव ।
बहुशस्तत् प्रयुक्ताश्च वानरा निहता मया ॥३३॥

33. yatnavāṃśca suduṣṭātmā madvināśāya rāghava ,
bahuśastat prayuktāśca vānarā nihatā mayā.

And, O Rāghava (Rāma), that one with a very wicked mind constantly strives for my destruction. Many times, thus employed, monkeys have been killed by me.
शङ्कया त्वेतया चाहं दृष्ट्वा त्वामपि राघव ।
नोपसर्पाम्यहं भीतो भये सर्वे हि बिभ्यति ॥३४॥

34. śaṅkayā tvetayā cāhaṃ dṛṣṭvā tvāmapi rāghava ,
nopasarpāmyahaṃ bhīto bhaye sarve hi bibhyati.

34.
Because of this apprehension, O Raghava, even after seeing you, I do not approach, being afraid. For indeed, everyone becomes fearful when fear is present.
केवलं हि सहाया मे हनुमत् प्रमुखास्त्विमे ।
अतो ऽहं धारयाम्यद्य प्राणान् कृच्छ्र गतो ऽपि सन् ॥३५॥

35. kevalaṃ hi sahāyā me hanumat pramukhāstvime ,
ato'haṃ dhārayāmyadya prāṇān kṛcchra gato'pi san.

kevalam hi sahāyāḥ me hanumatpramukhāḥ tu ime ataḥ
aham dhārayāmi adya prāṇān kṛcchragataḥ api san

hi ime hanumatpramukhāḥ sahāyāḥ me kevalam (santi).

Indeed, these companions, with Hanuman as their chief, are my only support. Therefore, even though I am in great difficulty, I sustain my life now.
एते हि कपयः स्निग्धा मां रक्षन्ति समन्ततः ।
सह गच्छन्ति गन्तव्ये नित्यं तिष्ठन्ति च स्थिते ॥३६॥

36. ete hi kapayaḥ snigdhā māṃ rakṣanti samantataḥ ,
saha gacchanti gantavye nityaṃ tiṣṭhanti ca sthite.

gantavye (sati) saha gacchanti,

36.
Indeed, these loyal monkeys protect me from all directions. They accompany me when there is a journey to be made, and they always remain by my side when I halt.
संक्षेपस्त्वेष मे राम किमुक्त्वा विस्तरं हि ते ।
स मे ज्येष्ठो रिपुर्भ्राता वाली विश्रुतपौरुषः ॥३७॥

eṣaḥ me saṃkṣepaḥ tu (asti).
te vistaram uktvā hi kim (prayojanam)? saḥ me jyeṣṭhaḥ bhrātā ripuḥ vālī (ca) viśrutapauruṣaḥ (asti).

O Rama, this is my brief account. Why should I explain it to you in great detail? He is my elder brother and adversary, Vali, whose prowess is widely known.
तद्विनाशाद्धि मे दुःखं प्रनष्टं स्यादनन्तरम् ।
सुखं मे जीवितं चैव तद्विनाशनिबन्धनम् ॥३८॥

38. tadvināśāddhi me duḥkhaṃ pranaṣṭaṃ syādanantaram ,

tat-vināśāt hi me duḥkham pranaṣṭam syāt anantaram

Indeed, with its destruction, my suffering would immediately cease entirely. My happiness and my very life are entirely dependent on its demise.
एष मे राम शोकान्तः शोकार्तेन निवेदितः ।
दुःखितो ऽदुःखितो वापि सख्युर्नित्यं सखा गतिः ॥३९॥

39. eṣa me rāma śokāntaḥ śokārtena niveditaḥ ,
duḥkhito'duḥkhito vāpi sakhyurnityaṃ sakhā gatiḥ.

rāma eṣaḥ śoka-antaḥ me śoka-ārtena niveditaḥ
duḥkhitaḥ vā a-duḥkhitaḥ api sakhā nityam sakhyuḥ gatiḥ
duḥkhitaḥ vā a-duḥkhitaḥ api sakhā nityam sakhyuḥ gatiḥ
39.
O Rama, this resolution to my sorrow has been presented by me, who am afflicted by grief. Whether one is distressed or not, a friend is always the support and refuge of a friend.
श्रुत्वैतच्च वचो रामः सुग्रीवमिदमब्रवीत् ।
किंनिमित्तमभूद्वैरं श्रोतुमिच्छामि तत्त्वतः ॥४०॥

Having heard these words, Rama then spoke to Sugrīva, saying, 'What was the cause of this enmity? I wish to know the full truth of it.'
सुखं हि कारणं श्रुत्वा वैरस्य तव वानर ।
आनन्तर्यं विधास्यामि संप्रधार्य बलाबलम् ॥४१॥

O monkey (vānara), once I have readily heard the cause of your enmity, I will take the appropriate immediate action, having thoroughly assessed the relative strengths and weaknesses.
बलवान् हि ममामर्षः श्रुत्वा त्वामवमानितम् ।
वर्धते हृदयोत्कम्पी प्रावृड्वेग इवाम्भसः ॥४२॥

Indeed, my indignation, having heard that you were insulted, grows, causing my heart to tremble, just like the surging force of water during the monsoon season.
हृष्टः कथय विस्रब्धो यावदारोप्यते धनुः ।
सृष्टश्च हि मया बाणो निरस्तश्च रिपुस्तव ॥४३॥

Feeling pleased, speak confidently, while this bow is being strung. For indeed, my arrow will be discharged, and your enemy will be vanquished.

Thus addressed by the great-souled Kakutstha (Rama), Sugriva, along with his four monkey companions, attained unequalled joy.
