गुहस्य वचनं श्रुत्वा भरतो भृशमप्रियम् ।
ध्यानं जगाम तत्रैव यत्र तच्छ्रुतमप्रियम् ॥१॥

1. Having heard Guha's extremely unpleasant words, Bharata became absorbed in contemplation (dhyāna) right there, where that unpleasant news was heard.
सुकुमारो महासत्त्वः सिंहस्कन्धो महाभुजः ।
पुण्डरीक विशालाक्षस्तरुणः प्रियदर्शनः ॥२॥
2. sukumāro mahāsattvaḥ siṃhaskandho mahābhujaḥ ,
puṇḍarīka viśālākṣastaruṇaḥ priyadarśanaḥ.

2. He was very tender, of great courage, with shoulders like a lion, possessing mighty arms, with large eyes like lotus petals, young, and pleasant to behold.
प्रत्याश्वस्य मुहूर्तं तु कालं परमदुर्मनाः ।
पपात सहसा तोत्रैर्हृदि विद्ध इव द्विपः ॥३॥
3. pratyāśvasya muhūrtaṃ tu kālaṃ paramadurmanāḥ ,
papāta sahasā totrairhṛdi viddha iva dvipaḥ.

3. After recovering for a moment, he, profoundly disheartened, suddenly fell, like an elephant pierced in the heart by goads.
तदवस्थं तु भरतं शत्रुघ्नो ऽनन्तर स्थितः ।
परिष्वज्य रुरोदोच्चैर्विसंज्ञः शोककर्शितः ॥४॥
4. tadavasthaṃ tu bharataṃ śatrughno'nantara sthitaḥ ,
pariṣvajya rurodoccairvisaṃjñaḥ śokakarśitaḥ.
4. tatavastham tu bharatam śatrughnaḥ anantara sthitaḥ
pariṣvajya ruroda uccaiḥ visaṃjñaḥ śokakarśitaḥ
4. anantara sthitaḥ śatrughnaḥ tu tadavastham bharatam
pariṣvajya visaṃjñaḥ śokakarśitaḥ uccaiḥ ruroda
4. Shatrughna, who was standing right beside Bharata in that state, embraced him and wept loudly, himself bewildered and worn out by sorrow.
ततः सर्वाः समापेतुर्मातरो भरतस्य ताः ।
उपवास कृशा दीना भर्तृव्यसनकर्शिताः ॥५॥
5. tataḥ sarvāḥ samāpeturmātaro bharatasya tāḥ ,
upavāsa kṛśā dīnā bhartṛvyasanakarśitāḥ.
5. tataḥ sarvāḥ samāpetuḥ mātaraḥ bharatasya
tāḥ upavāsa kṛśāḥ dīnāḥ bhartṛvyasanakarśitāḥ

5. Then all of Bharata's mothers, who were emaciated by fasting, miserable, and weakened by the calamity of their husband, gathered around him.
ताश्च तं पतितं भूमौ रुदन्त्यः पर्यवारयन् ।
कौसल्या त्वनुसृत्यैनं दुर्मनाः परिषस्वजे ॥६॥
6. tāśca taṃ patitaṃ bhūmau rudantyaḥ paryavārayan ,
kausalyā tvanusṛtyainaṃ durmanāḥ pariṣasvaje.
6. tāḥ ca tam patitam bhūmau rudantyaḥ paryavārayan
kausalyā tu anusṛtya enam durmanāḥ pariṣvasvaje
6. ca tāḥ rudantyaḥ bhūmau patitam tam paryavārayan

6. And weeping, they surrounded him as he lay fallen on the ground. But Kausalya, deeply distressed, approached him and embraced him.
वत्सला स्वं यथा वत्समुपगूह्य तपस्विनी ।
परिपप्रच्छ भरतं रुदन्ती शोकलालसा ॥७॥
7. vatsalā svaṃ yathā vatsamupagūhya tapasvinī ,
paripapraccha bharataṃ rudantī śokalālasā.
7. vatsalā svam yathā vatsam upagūhya tapasvinī
paripapraccha bharatam rudantī śokalālasā
7. tapasvinī śokalālasā rudantī vatsalā yathā
svam vatsam upagūhya bharatam paripapraccha
7. Just as a loving mother embraces her own calf, the unfortunate woman, weeping and overwhelmed with grief, embraced Bharata and questioned him.
पुत्रव्याधिर्न ते कच्चिच्छरीरं परिबाधते ।
अद्य राजकुलस्यास्य त्वदधीनं हि जीवितम् ॥८॥
8. putravyādhirna te kacciccharīraṃ paribādhate ,
adya rājakulasyāsya tvadadhīnaṃ hi jīvitam.
8. putra vyādhiḥ na te kaccit śarīram paribādhate
adya rājakulasya asya tvadadhīnam hi jīvitam
8. putra,
kaccit vyādhiḥ te śarīram na paribādhate? hi adya asya rājakulasya jīvitam tvadadhīnam
8. Son, I hope no illness afflicts your body? Indeed, today, the life of this royal family is dependent on you.
त्वां दृष्ट्वा पुत्र जीवामि रामे सभ्रातृके गते ।
वृत्ते दशरथे राज्ञि नाथ एकस्त्वमद्य नः ॥९॥
9. tvāṃ dṛṣṭvā putra jīvāmi rāme sabhrātṛke gate ,
vṛtte daśarathe rājñi nātha ekastvamadya naḥ.
9. tvām dṛṣṭvā putra jīvāmi rāme sabhrātṛke gate
vṛtte daśarathe rājñi nātha ekaḥ tvam adya naḥ
9. putra,
rāme sabhrātṛke gate,
rājñi daśarathe vṛtte (ca),
tvām dṛṣṭvā (aham) jīvāmi.
adya tvam ekaḥ naḥ nāthaḥ
9. Son, I live only after seeing you, as Rāma has departed with his brother, and King Daśaratha has passed away. You alone are our protector now.
कच्चिन्न लक्ष्मणे पुत्र श्रुतं ते किं चिदप्रियम् ।
पुत्र वा ह्येकपुत्रायाः सहभार्ये वनं गते ॥१०॥
10. kaccinna lakṣmaṇe putra śrutaṃ te kiṃ cidapriyam ,
putra vā hyekaputrāyāḥ sahabhārye vanaṃ gate.
10. kaccit na lakṣmaṇe putra śrutam te kim cit apriyam
putra vā hi ekaputrāyāḥ sahabhārye vanam gate
10. putra,
kaccit te lakṣmaṇe kim cit apriyam na śrutam? vā putra,
hi ekaputrāyāḥ sahabhārye vanam gate (viṣaye kim cit apriyam na śrutam)?
10. Son, I hope you haven't heard anything unpleasant concerning Lakṣmaṇa? Or, son, (have you heard anything unpleasant) regarding the one who went to the forest with his wife, who is (like) the only son to his mother?
स मुहूर्तं समाश्वस्य रुदन्नेव महायशाः ।
कौसल्यां परिसान्त्व्येदं गुहं वचनमब्रवीत् ॥११॥
11. sa muhūrtaṃ samāśvasya rudanneva mahāyaśāḥ ,
kausalyāṃ parisāntvyedaṃ guhaṃ vacanamabravīt.
11. saḥ muhūrtam samāśvasya rudan eva mahāyaśāḥ
kausalyām parisāntvyā idam guham vacanam abravīt
11. mahāyaśāḥ saḥ muhūrtam samāśvasya rudan eva
kausalyām parisāntvyā idam vacanam guham abravīt
11. The highly renowned Bharata, having composed himself for a moment, and still weeping, then thoroughly consoled Kausalya and spoke these words to Guha.
भ्राता मे क्वावसद् रात्रिं क्व सीता क्व च लक्ष्मणः ।
अस्वपच्छयने कस्मिन् किं भुक्त्वा गुह शंस मे ॥१२॥
12. bhrātā me kvāvasad rātriṃ kva sītā kva ca lakṣmaṇaḥ ,
asvapacchayane kasmin kiṃ bhuktvā guha śaṃsa me.
12. bhrātā me kva avasat rātrim kva sītā kva ca lakṣmaṇaḥ
asvapat śayane kasmin kim bhuktvā guha śaṃsa me
12. guha me śaṃsa me bhrātā rātrim kva avasat kva sītā
ca kva lakṣmaṇaḥ kasmin śayane asvapat kim bhuktvā
12. O Guha, tell me: Where did my brother (Rama) stay for the night? Where did Sita and Lakshmana stay? On what kind of bed did he sleep, and what did he eat?
सो ऽब्रवीद्भरतं पृष्टो निषादाधिपतिर्गुहः ।
यद्विधं प्रतिपेदे च रामे प्रियहिते ऽतिथौ ॥१३॥
13. so'bravīdbharataṃ pṛṣṭo niṣādādhipatirguhaḥ ,
yadvidhaṃ pratipede ca rāme priyahite'tithau.
13. saḥ abravīt bharatam pṛṣṭaḥ niṣāda-adhipatiḥ guhaḥ
yat-vidham pratipede ca rāme priyahite atithau
13. bharatam pṛṣṭaḥ saḥ niṣāda-adhipatiḥ guhaḥ abravīt
ca rāme priyahite atithau yat-vidham pratipede
13. When questioned by Bharata, Guha, the chieftain of the Nishadas, replied, describing how he had received Rama, who was his dear and benevolent guest.
अन्नमुच्चावचं भक्ष्याः फलानि विविधानि च ।
रामायाभ्यवहारार्थं बहुचोपहृतं मया ॥१४॥
14. annamuccāvacaṃ bhakṣyāḥ phalāni vividhāni ca ,
rāmāyābhyavahārārthaṃ bahucopahṛtaṃ mayā.
14. annam uccāvacam bhakṣyāḥ phalāni vividhāni ca
rāmāya abhyavahāra-artham bahu ca upahṛtam mayā
14. mayā rāmāya abhyavahāra-artham bahu uccāvacam
annam bhakṣyāḥ ca vividhāni phalāni ca upahṛtam
14. I offered Rama abundant and diverse foods, various edibles, and many kinds of fruits for his consumption.
तत् सर्वं प्रत्यनुज्ञासीद् रामः सत्यपराक्रमः ।
न हि तत् प्रत्यगृह्णात् स क्षत्रधर्ममनुस्मरन् ॥१५॥
15. tat sarvaṃ pratyanujñāsīd rāmaḥ satyaparākramaḥ ,
na hi tat pratyagṛhṇāt sa kṣatradharmamanusmaran.
15. tat sarvam pratyanujñāsīt rāmaḥ satyaparākramaḥ na
hi tat pratyagṛhṇāt saḥ kṣatradharmam anusmaran
15. rāmaḥ satyaparākramaḥ tat sarvam pratyanujñāsīt
saḥ hi kṣatradharmam anusmaran tat na pratyagṛhṇāt
15. Rama, whose valor was true, assented to all of that. However, remembering the natural law (dharma) of a warrior (kṣatriya), he indeed did not accept it.
न ह्यस्माभिः प्रतिग्राह्यं सखे देयं तु सर्वदा ।
इति तेन वयं राजन्ननुनीता महात्मना ॥१६॥
16. na hyasmābhiḥ pratigrāhyaṃ sakhe deyaṃ tu sarvadā ,
iti tena vayaṃ rājannanunītā mahātmanā.
16. na hi asmābhiḥ pratigrāhyam sakhe deyam tu
sarvadā iti tena vayam rājan anunītā mahātmanā
16. sakhe hi asmābhiḥ (etat) pratigrāhyam na tu sarvadā
deyam rājan iti tena mahātmanā vayam anunītāḥ
16. "Indeed, O friend, it is not to be accepted by us; rather, it is always to be given." Thus, O King, we were instructed by that great-souled one.
लक्ष्मणेन समानीतं पीत्वा वारि महायशाः ।
औपवास्यं तदाकार्षीद् राघवः सह सीतया ॥१७॥
17. lakṣmaṇena samānītaṃ pītvā vāri mahāyaśāḥ ,
aupavāsyaṃ tadākārṣīd rāghavaḥ saha sītayā.
17. lakṣmaṇena samānītam pītvā vāri mahāyaśāḥ
aupavāsyam tadā akārṣīt rāghavaḥ saha sītayā
17. mahāyaśāḥ rāghavaḥ lakṣmaṇena samānītam vāri
pītvā tadā sītayā saha aupavāsyam akārṣīt
17. The glorious Rama, having drunk the water brought by Lakshmana, then observed a fast with Sita.
ततस्तु जलशेषेण लक्ष्मणो ऽप्यकरोत्तदा ।
वाग् यतास्ते त्रयः संध्यामुपासत समाहिताः ॥१८॥
18. tatastu jalaśeṣeṇa lakṣmaṇo'pyakarottadā ,
vāg yatāste trayaḥ saṃdhyāmupāsata samāhitāḥ.
18. tataḥ tu jalaśeṣeṇa lakṣmaṇaḥ api akarot tadā
vāk yatāḥ te trayaḥ sandhyām upāsata samāhitāḥ
18. tataḥ tu lakṣmaṇaḥ api jalaśeṣeṇa tadā akarot
te trayaḥ vāk yatāḥ samāhitāḥ sandhyām upāsata
18. But then Lakshmana also performed the rites with the remaining water. Those three, self-controlled in speech and deeply concentrated, observed the twilight worship (saṃdhyā).
सौमित्रिस्तु ततः पश्चादकरोत् स्वास्तरं शुभम् ।
स्वयमानीय बर्हींषि क्षिप्रं राघव कारणात् ॥१९॥
19. saumitristu tataḥ paścādakarot svāstaraṃ śubham ,
svayamānīya barhīṃṣi kṣipraṃ rāghava kāraṇāt.
19. saumitriḥ tu tataḥ paścāt akarot svāstaram śubham
svayam ānīya barhīṃṣi kṣipram rāghava kāraṇāt
19. tataḥ paścāt saumitriḥ rāghava kāraṇāt svayam
barhīṃṣi ānīya kṣipram śubham svāstaram akarot
19. Then, Lakshmana, for the sake of Rama (Rāghava), himself swiftly brought grasses and made a beautiful bed for them.
तस्मिन् समाविशद् रामः स्वास्तरे सह सीतया ।
प्रक्षाल्य च तयोः पादावपचक्राम लक्ष्मणः ॥२०॥
20. tasmin samāviśad rāmaḥ svāstare saha sītayā ,
prakṣālya ca tayoḥ pādāvapacakrāma lakṣmaṇaḥ.
20. tasmin samāviśat rāmaḥ svāstare saha sītayā
prakṣālya ca tayoḥ pādau apacakrāma lakṣmaṇaḥ
20. rāmaḥ saha sītayā tasmin svāstare samāviśat
ca lakṣmaṇaḥ tayoḥ pādau prakṣālya apacakrāma
20. On that bed, Rama sat down with Sita. And Lakshmana, having washed the feet of both of them, then withdrew.
एतत्तदिङ्गुदीमूलमिदमेव च तत्तृणम् ।
यस्मिन् रामश्च सीता च रात्रिं तां शयिताव् उभौ ॥२१॥
21. etattadiṅgudīmūlamidameva ca tattṛṇam ,
yasmin rāmaśca sītā ca rātriṃ tāṃ śayitāv ubhau.
21. etat tat iṅgudīmūlam idam eva ca tat tṛṇam
yasmin rāmaḥ ca sītā ca rātrim tām śayitau ubhau
21. etat tat iṅgudīmūlam ca idam eva tat tṛṇam
yasmin rāmaḥ ca sītā ca ubhau tām rātrim śayitau
21. This is that base of the Ingudi tree, and this indeed is that very grass, on which both Rama and Sita slept that night.
नियम्य पृष्ठे तु तलाङ्गुलित्रवाञ् शरैः सुपूर्णाविषुधी परंतपः ।
महद्धनुः सज्यमुपोह्य लक्ष्मणो निशामतिष्ठत् परितो ऽस्य केवलम् ॥२२॥
22. niyamya pṛṣṭhe tu talāṅgulitravāñ śaraiḥ supūrṇāviṣudhī paraṃtapaḥ ,
mahaddhanuḥ sajyamupohya lakṣmaṇo niśāmatiṣṭhat parito'sya kevalam.
22. niyamya pṛṣṭhe tu talāṅgulitravān
śaraiḥ supūrṇau iṣudhī paraṃtapaḥ
mahat dhanuḥ sajyam upohya lakṣmaṇaḥ
niśām atiṣṭhat paritaḥ asya kevalam
22. tu paraṃtapaḥ lakṣmaṇaḥ talāṅgulitravān
śaraiḥ supūrṇau iṣudhī pṛṣṭhe
niyamya mahat sajyam dhanuḥ upohya
asya paritaḥ kevalam niśām atiṣṭhat
22. And Lakshmana, the tormentor of foes (paraṃtapa), wearing finger-guards, having fastened two quivers well-filled with arrows on his back, and having taken up his great, strung bow, stood guard alone around him (Rama) throughout the night.
ततस्त्वहं चोत्तमबाणचापधृक् स्थितो ऽभवं तत्र स यत्र लक्ष्मणः ।
अतन्द्रिभिर्ज्ञातिभिरात्तकार्मुकैर्महेन्द्रकल्पं परिपालयंस्तदा ॥२३॥
23. tatastvahaṃ cottamabāṇacāpadhṛk sthito'bhavaṃ tatra sa yatra lakṣmaṇaḥ ,
atandribhirjñātibhirāttakārmukairmahendrakalpaṃ paripālayaṃstadā.
23. tataḥ tu aham ca uttama-bāṇa-cāpa-dhṛk
sthitaḥ abhavam tatra saḥ yatra lakṣmaṇaḥ
| atandribhiḥ jñātibhiḥ ātta-kārmukaiḥ
mahendra-kalpam paripālayan tadā
23. tataḥ tu ca aham uttama-bāṇa-cāpa-dhṛk
sthitaḥ abhavam tatra saḥ yatra lakṣmaṇaḥ
tadā atandribhiḥ ātta-kārmukaiḥ
jñātibhiḥ mahendra-kalpam paripālayan (āsam)
23. Then I, bearing the finest bow and arrow, stood there where Lakshmana was. At that time, I was protecting that region, which was like the realm of Mahendra, accompanied by vigilant kinsmen who had taken up their bows.
