अथ मेने हृतं राज्यं हनुमानङ्गदेन तत् ॥१॥

1. While Tara, whose brilliance resembled that of the moon, was speaking thus, Hanuman then considered that the kingdom had been seized by Angada.
बुद्ध्या ह्यष्टाङ्गया युक्तं चतुर्बलसमन्वितम् ।
चतुर्दशगुणं मेने हनुमान् वालिनः सुतम् ॥२॥
2. buddhyā hyaṣṭāṅgayā yuktaṃ caturbalasamanvitam ,
caturdaśaguṇaṃ mene hanumān vālinaḥ sutam.

2. Hanuman indeed considered Vali's son (Angada) to be endowed with an intellect skilled in the eight branches of statesmanship, possessing the four types of strength, and exhibiting the fourteen excellent qualities.
आपूर्यमाणं शश्वच्च तेजोबलपराक्रमैः ।
शशिनं शुक्लपक्षादौ वर्धमानमिव श्रिया ॥३॥
3. āpūryamāṇaṃ śaśvacca tejobalaparākramaiḥ ,
śaśinaṃ śuklapakṣādau vardhamānamiva śriyā.
3. āpūryamāṇam śaśvat ca tejobalaparākramaiḥ
śaśinam śuklapakṣādau vardhamānam iva śriyā

3. He was constantly being filled with splendor, strength, and valor, like the moon increasing in brilliance at the beginning of the bright fortnight.
बृहस्पतिसमं बुद्ध्या विक्रमे सदृशं पितुः ।
शुश्रूषमाणं तारस्य शुक्रस्येव पुरंदरम् ॥४॥
4. bṛhaspatisamaṃ buddhyā vikrame sadṛśaṃ pituḥ ,
śuśrūṣamāṇaṃ tārasya śukrasyeva puraṃdaram.
4. bṛhaspatisamam buddhyā vikrame sadṛśam pituḥ
śuśrūṣamāṇam tārasya śukrasya iva purandaram
4. buddhyā bṛhaspatisamam vikrame pituḥ sadṛśam

4. He was equal to Brihaspati in intelligence, similar to his father in valor, and serving (his master) like Purandara serves Tara and Shukra.
भर्तुरर्थे परिश्रान्तं सर्वशास्त्रविशारदम् ।
अभिसंधातुमारेभे हनुमानङ्गदं ततः ॥५॥
5. bharturarthe pariśrāntaṃ sarvaśāstraviśāradam ,
abhisaṃdhātumārebhe hanumānaṅgadaṃ tataḥ.
5. bhartuḥ arthe pariśrāntam sarvaśāstraviśāradam
abhisandhātum ārebhe hanumān aṅgadam tataḥ
5. tataḥ hanumān bhartuḥ arthe pariśrāntam
sarvaśāstraviśāradam aṅgadam abhisandhātum ārebhe
5. Then Hanuman began to conciliate Angada, who was devoted to his master's purpose and expert in all branches of knowledge (śāstra).
स चतुर्णामुपायानां तृतीयमुपवर्णयन् ।
भेदयामास तान् सर्वान् वानरान् वाक्यसंपदा ॥६॥
6. sa caturṇāmupāyānāṃ tṛtīyamupavarṇayan ,
bhedayāmāsa tān sarvān vānarān vākyasaṃpadā.
6. sa caturṇām upāyānām tṛtīyam upavarṇayan
bhedayāmāsa tān sarvān vānarān vākyasaṃpadā
6. sa caturṇām upāyānām tṛtīyam upavarṇayan,
vākyasaṃpadā tān sarvān vānarān bhedayāmāsa
6. Describing the third of the four diplomatic strategies, he caused dissension among all those monkeys with his skillful speech.
तेषु सर्वेषु भिन्नेषु ततो ऽभीषयदङ्गदम् ।
भीषणैर्बहुभिर्वाक्यैः कोपोपायसमन्वितैः ॥७॥
7. teṣu sarveṣu bhinneṣu tato'bhīṣayadaṅgadam ,
bhīṣaṇairbahubhirvākyaiḥ kopopāyasamanvitaiḥ.
7. teṣu sarveṣu bhinneṣu tataḥ abhīṣayat aṅgadam
bhīṣaṇaiḥ bahubhiḥ vākyaiḥ kopa upāya samanvitaiḥ
7. teṣu sarveṣu bhinneṣu tataḥ aṅgadam abhīṣayat,
bhīṣaṇaiḥ bahubhiḥ kopopāyasamanvitaiḥ vākyaiḥ
7. When all of them were thus divided, he then threatened Angada with many frightening words, which were filled with anger and calculated tactics.
त्वं समर्थतरः पित्रा युद्धे तारेय वै धुरम् ।
दृढं धारयितुं शक्तः कपिराज्यं यथा पिता ॥८॥
8. tvaṃ samarthataraḥ pitrā yuddhe tāreya vai dhuram ,
dṛḍhaṃ dhārayituṃ śaktaḥ kapirājyaṃ yathā pitā.
8. tvam samarthataraḥ pitrā yuddhe tāreya vai dhuram
dṛḍham dhārayitum śaktaḥ kapi-rājyam yathā pitā
8. tāreya! tvam yuddhe pitrā samarthataraḥ vai.
yathā pitā (adhārayat),
(tathā) dhuram kapi-rājyam dṛḍham dhārayitum śaktaḥ
8. O son of Tārā, you are indeed more capable than your father in battle. You are able to firmly maintain the monkey kingdom, just as your father did.
नित्यमस्थिरचित्ता हि कपयो हरिपुंगव ।
नाज्ञाप्यं विषहिष्यन्ति पुत्रदारान् विना त्वया ॥९॥
9. nityamasthiracittā hi kapayo haripuṃgava ,
nājñāpyaṃ viṣahiṣyanti putradārān vinā tvayā.
9. nityam asthiracittāḥ hi kapayaḥ haripuṅgava na
ājñāpyam viṣahiṣyanti putra dārān vinā tvayā
9. haripuṅgava! kapayaḥ hi nityam asthiracittāḥ.
(te) tvayā putra dārān vinā ājñāpyaṃ na viṣahiṣyanti
9. Indeed, monkeys are always fickle-minded, O chief of monkeys. They will not tolerate being commanded without you (being present to ensure their well-being) or without their own sons and wives (being safe).
त्वां नैते ह्यनुयुञ्जेयुः प्रत्यक्षं प्रवदामि ते ।
यथायं जाम्बवान्नीलः सुहोत्रश्च महाकपिः ॥१०॥
10. tvāṃ naite hyanuyuñjeyuḥ pratyakṣaṃ pravadāmi te ,
yathāyaṃ jāmbavānnīlaḥ suhotraśca mahākapiḥ.
10. tvām na ete hi anuyuñjeyuḥ pratyakṣam pravadāmi te
| yathā ayam jāmbavān nīlaḥ suhotraḥ ca mahākapiḥ
10. te tvām ete hi na anuyuñjeyuḥ aham pratyakṣam pravadāmi
yathā ayam jāmbavān nīlaḥ ca mahākapiḥ suhotraḥ
10. Indeed, these (followers) will not question you directly, I tell you. Just as this Jambavān, Nīla, and the great monkey Suhotra (will not question you).
न ह्यहं त इमे सर्वे सामदानादिभिर्गुणैः ।
दण्डेन न त्वया शक्याः सुग्रीवादपकर्षितुम् ॥११॥
11. na hyahaṃ ta ime sarve sāmadānādibhirguṇaiḥ ,
daṇḍena na tvayā śakyāḥ sugrīvādapakarṣitum.
11. na hi aham te ime sarve sāmadānādibhiḥ guṇaiḥ
| daṇḍena na tvayā śakyāḥ sugrīvāt apakarṣitum
11. aham te ime sarve hi sāmadānādibhiḥ guṇaiḥ
daṇḍena ca tvayā sugrīvāt apakarṣitum na śakyāḥ
11. Indeed, I and all these (followers) cannot be separated from Sugrīva by you, neither by means of conciliation and gifts, nor by punishment.
विगृह्यासनमप्याहुर्दुर्बलेन बलीयसः ।
आत्मरक्षाकरस्तस्मान्न विगृह्णीत दुर्बलः ॥१२॥
12. vigṛhyāsanamapyāhurdurbalena balīyasaḥ ,
ātmarakṣākarastasmānna vigṛhṇīta durbalaḥ.
12. vigṛhya āsanam api āhuḥ durbalena balīyasaḥ
| ātmarakṣākaraḥ tasmāt na vigṛhṇīta durbalaḥ
12. दुर्बलेन बलीयसः विगृह्य आसनम् अपि आहुः
तस्मात् आत्मरक्षाकरः दुर्बलः न विगृह्णीत
12. They say that (strategies like) hostilities (vigṛhya) and even neutrality (āsana) are suitable for the powerful when dealing with the weak. Therefore, a weak person, (if he is) a protector of himself (ātman), should not engage in hostility.
यां चेमां मन्यसे धात्रीमेतद्बिलमिति श्रुतम् ।
एतल् लक्ष्मणबाणानामीषत्कार्यं विदारणे ॥१३॥
13. yāṃ cemāṃ manyase dhātrīmetadbilamiti śrutam ,
etal lakṣmaṇabāṇānāmīṣatkāryaṃ vidāraṇe.
13. yām ca imām manyase dhātrīm etat bilam iti śrutam
| etat lakṣmaṇabāṇānām īṣat kāryam vidāraṇe
13. याम् इमाम् धात्रीम् च त्वम् एतत् बिलम् इति मन्यसे
श्रुतम् एतत् विदारणे लक्ष्मणबाणानाम् ईषत् कार्यम्
13. And this (place), which you consider to be a sustainer (dhātrī) (of its inhabitants), (and) which is known by the name 'this cave' - this (very cave) is but a small task for Lakṣmaṇa's arrows to tear apart.
स्वल्पं हि कृतमिन्द्रेण क्षिपता ह्यशनिं पुरा ।
लक्ष्मणो निशितैर्बाणैर्भिन्द्यात् पत्रपुटं यथा ।
लक्ष्मणस्य च नाराचा बहवः सन्ति तद्विधाः ॥१४॥
14. svalpaṃ hi kṛtamindreṇa kṣipatā hyaśaniṃ purā ,
lakṣmaṇo niśitairbāṇairbhindyāt patrapuṭaṃ yathā ,
lakṣmaṇasya ca nārācā bahavaḥ santi tadvidhāḥ.
14. sv-alpaṃ hi kṛtam indreṇa kṣipatā hi
aśanim purā lakṣmaṇaḥ niśitaiḥ bāṇaiḥ
bhindyāt patra-puṭam yathā lakṣmaṇasya
ca nārācāḥ bahavaḥ santi tad-vidhāḥ
14. indreṇa purā aśanim kṣipatā kṛtam
sv-alpaṃ hi yathā lakṣmaṇaḥ niśitaiḥ
bāṇaiḥ patra-puṭam bhindyāt ca lakṣmaṇasya
tad-vidhāḥ bahavaḥ nārācāḥ santi
14. Indeed, what was accomplished by Indra in the past, when he hurled his thunderbolt, was very little. Just as Lakṣmaṇa could tear even a leaf-container with his sharp arrows, so too Lakṣmaṇa possesses many more iron arrows of that kind.
अवस्थाने यदैव त्वमासिष्यसि परंतप ।
तदैव हरयः सर्वे त्यक्ष्यन्ति कृतनिश्चयाः ॥१५॥
15. avasthāne yadaiva tvamāsiṣyasi paraṃtapa ,
tadaiva harayaḥ sarve tyakṣyanti kṛtaniścayāḥ.
15. avasthāne yadā eva tvam āsiṣyasi parantapa tadā
eva harayaḥ sarve tyakṣyanti kṛta-niścayāḥ
15. parantapa yadā eva tvam avasthāne āsiṣyasi tadā
eva sarve kṛta-niścayāḥ harayaḥ tyakṣyanti
15. O tormentor of enemies, the moment you settle down in one place, all the monkeys, firmly resolved, will abandon you.
स्मरन्तः पुत्रदाराणां नित्योद्विग्ना बुभुक्षिताः ।
खेदिता दुःखशय्याभिस्त्वां करिष्यन्ति पृष्ठतः ॥१६॥
16. smarantaḥ putradārāṇāṃ nityodvignā bubhukṣitāḥ ,
kheditā duḥkhaśayyābhistvāṃ kariṣyanti pṛṣṭhataḥ.
16. smarantaḥ putra-dārāṇām nitya-udvignāḥ bubhukṣitāḥ
kheditāḥ duḥkha-śayyābhiḥ tvām kariṣyanti pṛṣṭhataḥ
16. putra-dārāṇām smarantaḥ nitya-udvignāḥ bubhukṣitāḥ
duḥkha-śayyābhiḥ kheditāḥ tvām pṛṣṭhataḥ kariṣyanti
16. Constantly anxious, hungry, and exhausted by uncomfortable resting places, and remembering their sons and wives, they will turn their backs on you.
स त्वं हीनः सुहृद्भिश्च हितकामैश्च बन्धुभिः ।
तृणादपि भृशोद्विग्नः स्पन्दमानाद्भविष्यसि ॥१७॥
17. sa tvaṃ hīnaḥ suhṛdbhiśca hitakāmaiśca bandhubhiḥ ,
tṛṇādapi bhṛśodvignaḥ spandamānādbhaviṣyasi.
17. sa tvam hīnaḥ suhṛdbhiḥ ca hita-kāmaiḥ ca bandhubhiḥ
tṛṇāt api bhṛśa-udvignaḥ spandamānāt bhaviṣyasi
17. sa tvam suhṛdbhiḥ ca hita-kāmaiḥ ca bandhubhiḥ hīnaḥ
tṛṇāt api spandamānāt bhṛśa-udvignaḥ bhaviṣyasi
17. Thus, you, deprived of both friends and well-wishing relatives, will become greatly agitated even by a trembling blade of grass.
न च जातु न हिंस्युस्त्वां घोरा लक्ष्मणसायकाः ।
अपवृत्तं जिघांसन्तो महावेगा दुरासदाः ॥१८॥
18. na ca jātu na hiṃsyustvāṃ ghorā lakṣmaṇasāyakāḥ ,
apavṛttaṃ jighāṃsanto mahāvegā durāsadāḥ.
18. na ca jātu na hiṃsyuḥ tvām ghorā lakṣmaṇasāyakāḥ
apavṛttam jighāṃsantaḥ mahāvegā durāsadāḥ
18. ghorāḥ mahāvegāḥ durāsadāḥ apavṛttam jighāṃsantaḥ
lakṣmaṇasāyakāḥ ca jātu tvām na hiṃsyuḥ na
18. Lakṣmaṇa's dreadful, exceedingly swift, and irresistible arrows, intent on killing anyone who strays from the path, will certainly always harm you.
अस्माभिस्तु गतं सार्धं विनीतवदुपस्थितम् ।
आनुपूर्व्यात्तु सुग्रीवो राज्ये त्वां स्थापयिष्यति ॥१९॥
19. asmābhistu gataṃ sārdhaṃ vinītavadupasthitam ,
ānupūrvyāttu sugrīvo rājye tvāṃ sthāpayiṣyati.
19. asmābhiḥ tu gatam sārdham vinītavat upasthitam
ānupūrvyāt tu sugrīvaḥ rājye tvām sthāpayiṣyati
19. asmābhiḥ sārdham gatam vinītavat upasthitam
tvām tu sugrīvaḥ ānupūrvyāt rājye sthāpayiṣyati
19. Since you have come with us and presented yourself humbly, Sugrīva will surely establish you in the kingdom according to the proper succession.
धर्मकामः पितृव्यस्ते प्रीतिकामो दृढव्रतः ।
शुचिः सत्यप्रतिज्ञश्च ना त्वां जातु जिघांसति ॥२०॥
20. dharmakāmaḥ pitṛvyaste prītikāmo dṛḍhavrataḥ ,
śuciḥ satyapratijñaśca nā tvāṃ jātu jighāṃsati.
20. dharmakāmaḥ pitṛvyaḥ te prītikāmaḥ dṛḍhavrataḥ
śuciḥ satyapratijñaḥ ca na tvām jātu jighāṃsati
20. te pitṛvyaḥ dharmakāmaḥ prītikāmaḥ dṛḍhavrataḥ
śuciḥ satyapratijñaḥ ca jātu tvām na jighāṃsati
20. Your paternal uncle, desirous of righteousness (dharma), seeking goodwill, firm in his vows, pure, and truthful in his promises, will certainly never desire to kill you.
प्रियकामश्च ते मातुस्तदर्थं चास्य जीवितम् ।
तस्यापत्यं च नास्त्यन्यत्तस्मादङ्गद गम्यताम् ॥२१॥
21. priyakāmaśca te mātustadarthaṃ cāsya jīvitam ,
tasyāpatyaṃ ca nāstyanyattasmādaṅgada gamyatām.
21. priyakāmaḥ ca te mātuḥ tat artham ca asya jīvitam
tasya apatyam ca na asti anyat tasmāt aṅgada gamyatām
21. te mātuḥ priyakāmaḥ ca asya jīvitam ca tadartham
tasya anyat apatyam ca na asti tasmāt aṅgada gamyatām
21. And he (Sugrīva) is desirous of your mother's welfare, and indeed his life is for her sake. He has no other offspring. Therefore, Angada, go!
