ततः स कर्मणा तस्य विस्मितो भीमविक्रमः ।
हनुमान् रोषताम्राक्षो रक्षोऽधिपमवैक्षत ॥१॥

1. Then, Hanuman, whose terrible valor was astonished by that deed (karma), and whose eyes were red with anger, beheld the lord of Rākṣasas (Rāvaṇa).
भाजमानं महार्हेण काञ्चनेन विराजता ।
मुक्ताजालावृतेनाथ मुकुटेन महाद्युतिम् ॥२॥
2. bhājamānaṃ mahārheṇa kāñcanena virājatā ,
muktājālāvṛtenātha mukuṭena mahādyutim.

2. He beheld him, brilliant and of great splendor, adorned with precious gold that shimmered, and with a crown covered by a network of pearls.
वज्रसंयोगसंयुक्तैर्महार्हमणिविग्रहैः ।
हैमैराभरणैश्चित्रैर्मनसेव प्रकल्पितैः ॥३॥
3. vajrasaṃyogasaṃyuktairmahārhamaṇivigrahaiḥ ,
haimairābharaṇaiścitrairmanaseva prakalpitaiḥ.

3. He beheld him (adorned) with diverse golden ornaments, which were embedded with diamonds, whose forms consisted of highly precious gems, and which seemed to have been fashioned by thought itself.
महार्हक्षौमसंवीतं रक्तचन्दनरूषितम् ।
स्वनुलिप्तं विचित्राभिर्विविधभिश्च भक्तिभिः ॥४॥
4. mahārhakṣaumasaṃvītaṃ raktacandanarūṣitam ,
svanuliptaṃ vicitrābhirvividhabhiśca bhaktibhiḥ.

4. Covered with very valuable silk, smeared with red sandalwood paste, and well-anointed with various colorful decorative designs.
विपुलैर्दर्शनीयैश्च रक्षाक्षैर्भीमदर्शनैः ।
दीप्ततीक्ष्णमहादंष्ट्रैः प्रलम्बदशनच्छदैः ॥५॥
5. vipulairdarśanīyaiśca rakṣākṣairbhīmadarśanaiḥ ,
dīptatīkṣṇamahādaṃṣṭraiḥ pralambadaśanacchadaiḥ.

5. With broad and attractive demon-like eyes, terrifying to behold, with gleaming, sharp, great fangs, and with long lips.
शिरोभिर्दशभिर्वीरं भ्राजमानं महौजसं ।
नानाव्यालसमाकीर्णैः शिखरैरिव मन्दरम् ॥६॥
6. śirobhirdaśabhirvīraṃ bhrājamānaṃ mahaujasaṃ ,
nānāvyālasamākīrṇaiḥ śikharairiva mandaram.
6. śirobhiḥ daśabhiḥ vīram bhrājamānam mahā-ojasam
nānā-vyāla-samākīrṇaiḥ śikharaiḥ iva mandaram

6. The hero, shining with great power, with his ten heads, (appeared) like Mount Mandara with its peaks crowded with various snakes.
नीलाञ्जनचय प्रख्यं हारेणोरसि राजता ।
पूर्णचन्द्राभवक्त्रेण सबलाकमिवाम्बुदम् ॥७॥
7. nīlāñjanacaya prakhyaṃ hāreṇorasi rājatā ,
pūrṇacandrābhavaktreṇa sabalākamivāmbudam.

pūrṇa-candra-ābha-vaktram sabalākam iva ambudam

7. Resembling a mass of blue collyrium, shining on his chest with a necklace, with a face like the full moon, (he appeared) like a cloud accompanied by cranes.
बाहुभिर्बद्धकेयूरैश्चन्दनोत्तमरूषितैः ।
भ्राजमानाङ्गदैः पीनैः पञ्चशीर्षैरिवोरगैः ॥८॥
8. bāhubhirbaddhakeyūraiścandanottamarūṣitaiḥ ,
bhrājamānāṅgadaiḥ pīnaiḥ pañcaśīrṣairivoragaiḥ.
8. bāhubhiḥ baddha-keyūraiḥ candana-uttama-rūṣitaiḥ
bhrājamāna-aṅgadaiḥ pīnaiḥ pañca-śīrṣaiḥ iva uragaiḥ

8. His stout arms, adorned with armlets, smeared with excellent sandalwood paste, and shining with bangles, appeared like five-headed serpents.
महति स्फाटिके चित्रे रत्नसंयोगसंस्कृते ।
उत्तमास्तरणास्तीर्णे उपविष्टं वरासने ॥९॥
9. mahati sphāṭike citre ratnasaṃyogasaṃskṛte ,
uttamāstaraṇāstīrṇe upaviṣṭaṃ varāsane.

9. He was seated on a large, crystal, ornate, splendid seat, embellished with a combination of jewels and covered with excellent cushions.
अलंकृताभिरत्यर्थं प्रमदाभिः समन्ततः ।
वालव्यजनहस्ताभिरारात् समुपसेवितम् ॥१०॥
10. alaṃkṛtābhiratyarthaṃ pramadābhiḥ samantataḥ ,
vālavyajanahastābhirārāt samupasevitam.
10. alaṃkṛtābhiḥ atyartham pramadābhiḥ samantataḥ
vāla-vyajana-hastābhiḥ ārāt samupasevitam
10. atyartham alaṃkṛtābhiḥ vāla-vyajana-hastābhiḥ
pramadābhiḥ ārāt samantataḥ samupasevitam
10. He was attended upon from all sides by exceedingly adorned beautiful women, who held whisks made of animal hair in their hands and were close by.
दुर्धरेण प्रहस्तेन महापार्श्वेन रक्षसा ।
मन्त्रिभिर्मन्त्रतत्त्वज्ञैर्निकुम्भेन च मन्त्रिणा ॥११॥
11. durdhareṇa prahastena mahāpārśvena rakṣasā ,
mantribhirmantratattvajñairnikumbhena ca mantriṇā.
11. dur-dhareṇa prahastena mahā-pārśvena rakṣasā
mantribhiḥ mantra-tattvajñaiḥ nikumbhena ca mantriṇā
11. dur-dhareṇa prahastena mahā-pārśvena rakṣasā
mantra-tattvajñaiḥ mantribhiḥ ca nikumbhena mantriṇā
11. He was also attended upon by Durdhara, Prahasta, the demon Mahaparśva, by ministers skilled in the essence of counsel (mantra), and by the minister Nikumbha.
उपोपविष्टं रक्षोभिश्चतुर्भिर्बलदर्पितैः ।
कृत्स्नैः परिवृतं लोकं चतुर्भिरिव सागरैः ॥१२॥
12. upopaviṣṭaṃ rakṣobhiścaturbhirbaladarpitaiḥ ,
kṛtsnaiḥ parivṛtaṃ lokaṃ caturbhiriva sāgaraiḥ.
12. upopaviṣṭam rakṣobhiḥ caturbhiḥ baladarpitaiḥ
kṛtsnaiḥ parivṛtam lokam caturbhiḥ iva sāgaraiḥ

12. He was seated, surrounded by four Rākṣasas, arrogant with their might, and completely encircled as if the world (loka) were surrounded by the four oceans.
मन्त्रिभिर्मन्त्रतत्त्वज्ञैरन्यैश्च शुभबुद्धिभिः ।
अन्वास्यमानं सचिवैः सुरैरिव सुरेश्वरम् ॥१३॥
13. mantribhirmantratattvajñairanyaiśca śubhabuddhibhiḥ ,
anvāsyamānaṃ sacivaiḥ surairiva sureśvaram.
13. mantribhiḥ mantratattvajñaiḥ anyaiḥ ca śubhabuddhibhiḥ
anvāsyamanam sacivaiḥ suraiḥ iva sureśvaram
13. mantratattvajñaiḥ mantribhiḥ ca śubhabuddhibhiḥ
anyaiḥ sacivaiḥ anvāsyamanam suraiḥ sureśvaram iva
13. He was being attended by ministers who understood the essence of strategy, and by other advisors of excellent wisdom, just as the lord of the gods (sureśvara) is attended by the gods (sura).
अपश्यद् राक्षसपतिं हनूमानतितेजसं ।
विष्ठितं मेरुशिखरे सतोयमिव तोयदम् ॥१४॥
14. apaśyad rākṣasapatiṃ hanūmānatitejasaṃ ,
viṣṭhitaṃ meruśikhare satoyamiva toyadam.
14. hanumān apaśyat rākṣasapatim atitejasam
viṣṭhitam meruśikhare satoyam iva toyadam
14. hanumān atitejasam rākṣasapatim apaśyat (saḥ)
meruśikhare satoyam toyadam iva viṣṭhitam
14. Hanumān saw the exceedingly powerful lord of Rākṣasas, Rāvaṇa, who was situated like a water-laden cloud (toyada) on the peak of Mount Meru.
स तैः संपीड्यमानो ऽपि रक्षोभिर्भीमविक्रमैः ।
विस्मयं परमं गत्वा रक्षोऽधिपमवैक्षत ॥१५॥
15. sa taiḥ saṃpīḍyamāno'pi rakṣobhirbhīmavikramaiḥ ,
vismayaṃ paramaṃ gatvā rakṣo'dhipamavaikṣata.
15. saḥ taiḥ saṃpīḍyamānaḥ api rakṣobhiḥ bhīmavikramaiḥ
vismayam paramam gatvā rakṣo'dhipam avaikṣata
15. saḥ bhīmavikramaiḥ taiḥ rakṣobhiḥ api saṃpīḍyamānaḥ
paramam vismayam gatvā rakṣo'dhipam avaikṣata
15. Even though he (Hanumān) was being oppressed by those Rākṣasas of formidable valor, he attained great astonishment and gazed at the lord of Rākṣasas.
भ्राजमानं ततो दृष्ट्वा हनुमान् राक्षसेश्वरम् ।
मनसा चिन्तयामास तेजसा तस्य मोहितः ॥१६॥
16. bhrājamānaṃ tato dṛṣṭvā hanumān rākṣaseśvaram ,
manasā cintayāmāsa tejasā tasya mohitaḥ.
16. bhrājamānam tataḥ dṛṣṭvā hanumān rākṣaseśvaram
manasā cintayāmāsa tejasā tasya mohitaḥ
16. tataḥ rākṣaseśvaram bhrājamānam dṛṣṭvā tasya

16. Hanuman, having then seen the resplendent lord of the rākṣasas, was captivated by his radiance and pondered in his mind.
अहो रूपमहो धैर्यमहो सत्त्वमहो द्युतिः ।
अहो राक्षसराजस्य सर्वलक्षणयुक्तता ॥१७॥
17. aho rūpamaho dhairyamaho sattvamaho dyutiḥ ,
aho rākṣasarājasya sarvalakṣaṇayuktatā.
17. aho rūpam aho dhairyam aho sattvam aho dyutiḥ
aho rākṣasarājasya sarvalakṣaṇayuktatā
17. aho rūpam aho dhairyam aho sattvam aho dyutiḥ
aho rākṣasarājasya sarvalakṣaṇayuktatā
17. Oh, what a form! Oh, what fortitude! Oh, what intrinsic nature (sattva)! Oh, what splendor! And oh, the completeness of all auspicious marks of this king of rākṣasas!
यद्यधर्मो न बलवान् स्यादयं राक्षसेश्वरः ।
स्यादयं सुरलोकस्य सशक्रस्यापि रक्षिता ॥१८॥
18. yadyadharmo na balavān syādayaṃ rākṣaseśvaraḥ ,
syādayaṃ suralokasya saśakrasyāpi rakṣitā.
18. yadi adharmaḥ na balavān syāt ayam rākṣaseśvaraḥ
syāt ayam suralokasya saśakrasya api rakṣitā
18. yadi ayam rākṣaseśvaraḥ adharmaḥ balavān na syāt
ayam saśakrasya suralokasya api rakṣitā syāt
18. If this lord of the rākṣasas were not mighty in unrighteousness (adharma), he would be the protector of the world of the gods, even including Indra.
तेन बिभ्यति खल्वस्माल् लोकाः सामरदानवाः ।
अयं ह्युत्सहते क्रुद्धः कर्तुमेकार्णवं जगत् ॥१९॥
19. tena bibhyati khalvasmāl lokāḥ sāmaradānavāḥ ,
ayaṃ hyutsahate kruddhaḥ kartumekārṇavaṃ jagat.
19. tena bibhyati khalu asmāt lokāḥ sāmaradānavāḥ
ayam hi utsahate kruddhaḥ kartum ekārṇavam jagat
19. khalu tena asmāt sāmaradānavāḥ lokāḥ bibhyati hi
ayam kruddhaḥ jagat ekārṇavam kartum utsahate
19. Indeed, the worlds, including gods and dānavas, fear him. For this one, when enraged, dares to turn the entire world into a single ocean.
इति चिन्तां बहुविधामकरोन्मतिमान् कपिः ।
दृष्ट्वा राक्षसराजस्य प्रभावममितौजसः ॥२०॥
20. iti cintāṃ bahuvidhāmakaronmatimān kapiḥ ,
dṛṣṭvā rākṣasarājasya prabhāvamamitaujasaḥ.
20. iti cintām bahuvidhām akarot matimān kapiḥ
dṛṣṭvā rākṣasarājasya prabhāvam amitaujasas
20. matimān kapiḥ amitaujasas rākṣasarājasya
prabhāvam dṛṣṭvā iti bahuvidhām cintām akarot
20. The intelligent monkey (kapi), having observed the immense power of the king of rākṣasas who possessed immeasurable might, thus engaged in various kinds of contemplation.
