तथा ब्रुवाणं सौमित्रिं प्रदीप्तमिव तेजसा ।
अब्रवील् लक्ष्मणं तारा ताराधिपनिभानना ॥१॥

1. Thus to Lakshmana, son of Sumitra, who was speaking as if blazing with splendor, Tara, whose face resembled the moon, replied.
नैवं लक्ष्मण वक्तव्यो नायं परुषमर्हति ।
हरीणामीश्वरः श्रोतुं तव वक्त्राद्विशेषतः ॥२॥
2. naivaṃ lakṣmaṇa vaktavyo nāyaṃ paruṣamarhati ,
harīṇāmīśvaraḥ śrotuṃ tava vaktrādviśeṣataḥ.
2. na evam lakṣmaṇa vaktavyaḥ na ayam paruṣam arhati
harīṇām īśvaraḥ śrotum tava vaktrāt viśeṣataḥ
2. lakṣmaṇa evam na vaktavyaḥ ayam paruṣam na arhati
viśeṣataḥ tava vaktrāt harīṇām īśvaraḥ śrotum
2. Lakshmana, you should not speak in this manner. He (Sugriva) does not deserve such harsh words, particularly from your mouth, as he is the lord of the monkeys.
नैवाकृतज्ञः सुग्रीवो न शठो नापि दारुणः ।
नैवानृतकथो वीर न जिह्मश्च कपीश्वरः ॥३॥
3. naivākṛtajñaḥ sugrīvo na śaṭho nāpi dāruṇaḥ ,
naivānṛtakatho vīra na jihmaśca kapīśvaraḥ.
3. na eva akṛtajñaḥ sugrīvaḥ na śaṭhaḥ na api dāruṇaḥ
na eva anṛtakathaḥ vīra na jihmaḥ ca kapīśvaraḥ

3. O hero (Lakshmana), Sugriva is neither ungrateful, nor cunning, nor cruel. The lord of the monkeys is certainly not one who speaks falsely, nor is he dishonest.
उपकारं कृतं वीरो नाप्ययं विस्मृतः कपिः ।
रामेण वीर सुग्रीवो यदन्यैर्दुष्करं रणे ॥४॥
4. upakāraṃ kṛtaṃ vīro nāpyayaṃ vismṛtaḥ kapiḥ ,
rāmeṇa vīra sugrīvo yadanyairduṣkaraṃ raṇe.
4. upakāram kṛtam vīraḥ na api ayam vismṛtaḥ kapiḥ
rāmeṇa vīra sugrīvaḥ yat anyaiḥ duṣkaram raṇe

4. O hero (Lakshmana), this valiant monkey (Sugriva) has certainly not forgotten the help rendered by Rama, an act that would have been difficult for others to accomplish in battle.
रामप्रसादात् कीर्तिं च कपिराज्यं च शाश्वतम् ।
प्राप्तवानिह सुग्रीवो रुमां मां च परंतप ॥५॥
5. rāmaprasādāt kīrtiṃ ca kapirājyaṃ ca śāśvatam ,
prāptavāniha sugrīvo rumāṃ māṃ ca paraṃtapa.
5. rāmaprasādāt kīrtim ca kapirājyam ca śāśvatam
prāptavān iha sugrīvaḥ rumām mām ca paraṃtapa
5. paraṃtapa sugrīvaḥ rāmaprasādāt iha śāśvatam

5. O tormentor of foes (Lakshmana), Sugriva has obtained here, through Rama's grace, everlasting fame, the monkey kingdom, Ruma, and me (Tara).
सुदुःखं शायितः पूर्वं प्राप्येदं सुखमुत्तमम् ।
प्राप्तकालं न जानीते विश्वामित्रो यथा मुनिः ॥६॥
6. suduḥkhaṃ śāyitaḥ pūrvaṃ prāpyedaṃ sukhamuttamam ,
prāptakālaṃ na jānīte viśvāmitro yathā muniḥ.
6. sudukham śāyitaḥ pūrvam prāpya idam sukham uttamam
prāptakālam na jānīte viśvāmitraḥ yathā muniḥ
6. yathā viśvāmitraḥ muniḥ pūrvam suduḥkham śāyitaḥ
idam uttamam sukham prāpya prāptakālam na jānīte
6. Just as the sage Viśvāmitra, having previously endured great misery and now having obtained this supreme happiness, does not recognize the opportune moment.
घृताच्यां किल संसक्तो दशवर्षाणि लक्ष्मण ।
अहो ऽमन्यत धर्मात्मा विश्वामित्रो महामुनिः ॥७॥
7. ghṛtācyāṃ kila saṃsakto daśavarṣāṇi lakṣmaṇa ,
aho'manyata dharmātmā viśvāmitro mahāmuniḥ.
7. ghṛtācyām kila saṃsaktaḥ daśavarṣāṇi lakṣmaṇa
aho amanyata dharmātmā viśvāmitraḥ mahāmuniḥ
7. lakṣmaṇa aho kila dharmātmā mahāmuniḥ viśvāmitraḥ
ghṛtācyām daśavarṣāṇi saṃsaktaḥ amanyata
7. O Lakṣmaṇa, alas, the virtuous (dharmātmā) great sage Viśvāmitra, indeed engrossed with Ghṛtācī for ten years, considered (it to be a short time).
स हि प्राप्तं न जानीते कालं कालविदां वरः ।
विश्वामित्रो महातेजाः किं पुनर्यः पृथग्जनः ॥८॥
8. sa hi prāptaṃ na jānīte kālaṃ kālavidāṃ varaḥ ,
viśvāmitro mahātejāḥ kiṃ punaryaḥ pṛthagjanaḥ.
8. saḥ hi prāptam na jānīte kālam kālavidām varaḥ
viśvāmitraḥ mahātejāḥ kim punaḥ yaḥ pṛthagjanaḥ
8. hi saḥ mahātejāḥ viśvāmitraḥ kālavidām varaḥ
prāptam kālam na jānīte kim punaḥ yaḥ pṛthagjanaḥ
8. Indeed, he, Viśvāmitra, the greatly effulgent, who is the foremost among those who know time, does not recognize the opportune moment that has arrived. How much more so then for an ordinary person?
देहधर्मं गतस्यास्य परिश्रान्तस्य लक्ष्मण ।
अवितृप्तस्य कामेषु रामः क्षन्तुमिहार्हति ॥९॥
9. dehadharmaṃ gatasyāsya pariśrāntasya lakṣmaṇa ,
avitṛptasya kāmeṣu rāmaḥ kṣantumihārhati.
9. dehadharmam gatasya asya pariśrāntasya lakṣmaṇa
avitṛptasya kāmeṣu rāmaḥ kṣantum iha arhati
9. lakṣmaṇa iha asya dehadharmam gatasya pariśrāntasya
kāmeṣu avitṛptasya rāmaḥ kṣantum arhati
9. O Lakṣmaṇa, Rāma ought to forgive him (Viśvāmitra) in this matter, who has succumbed to bodily nature (dharma), is exhausted, and whose desires (kāma) are still unsatiated.
न च रोषवशं तात गन्तुमर्हसि लक्ष्मण ।
निश्चयार्थमविज्ञाय सहसा प्राकृतो यथा ॥१०॥
10. na ca roṣavaśaṃ tāta gantumarhasi lakṣmaṇa ,
niścayārthamavijñāya sahasā prākṛto yathā.
10. na ca roṣavaśam tāta gantum arhasi lakṣmaṇa
niścayārtham avijñāya sahasā prākṛtaḥ yathā
10. tāta lakṣmaṇa ca,
niścayārtham avijñāya,
prākṛtaḥ yathā sahasā roṣavaśam gantum na arhasi
10. And you, dear Lakshmana, should not hastily succumb to anger like a common person without first understanding the true intention.
सत्त्वयुक्ता हि पुरुषास्त्वद्विधाः पुरुषर्षभ ।
अविमृश्य न रोषस्य सहसा यान्ति वश्यताम् ॥११॥
11. sattvayuktā hi puruṣāstvadvidhāḥ puruṣarṣabha ,
avimṛśya na roṣasya sahasā yānti vaśyatām.
11. sattvayuktāḥ hi puruṣāḥ tvadvidhāḥ puruṣarṣabha
avimṛśya na roṣasya sahasā yānti vaśyatām
11. hi puruṣarṣabha,
tvadvidhāḥ sattvayuktāḥ puruṣāḥ,
avimṛśya sahasā roṣasya vaśyatām na yānti
11. Indeed, O best among men, individuals like you, endowed with an intrinsic nature (sattva) of goodness and resolve, do not hastily succumb to the sway of anger without careful deliberation.
प्रसादये त्वां धर्मज्ञ सुग्रीवार्थे समाहिता ।
महान् रोषसमुत्पन्नः संरम्भस्त्यज्यतामयम् ॥१२॥
12. prasādaye tvāṃ dharmajña sugrīvārthe samāhitā ,
mahān roṣasamutpannaḥ saṃrambhastyajyatāmayam.
12. prasādaye tvām dharmajña sugrīvārthe samāhitā
mahān roṣasamutpannaḥ saṃrambhaḥ tyajyatām ayam
12. dharmajña,
sugrīvārthe samāhitā (aham) tvām prasādaye.
roṣasamutpannaḥ mahān ayam saṃrambhaḥ tyajyatām.
12. O knower of natural law (dharma), I earnestly pacify you for Sugriva's sake. Let this great agitation, born of anger, be abandoned.
रुमां मां कपिराज्यं च धनधान्यवसूनि च ।
रामप्रियार्थं सुग्रीवस्त्यजेदिति मतिर्मम ॥१३॥
13. rumāṃ māṃ kapirājyaṃ ca dhanadhānyavasūni ca ,
rāmapriyārthaṃ sugrīvastyajediti matirmama.
13. rumām mām kapi-rājyam ca dhana-dhānya-vasūni ca
rāma-priyārtham sugrīvaḥ tyajet iti matiḥ mama
13. mama matiḥ iti (asti yat) sugrīvaḥ rāma-priyārtham rumām,
mām,
kapi-rājyam ca,
dhana-dhānya-vasūni ca tyajet
13. My thought is that Sugriva would give up Ruma, me, the kingdom of monkeys, and all his wealth, grain, and treasures just for the sake of pleasing Rama.
समानेष्व्यति सुग्रीवः सीतया सह राघवम् ।
शशाङ्कमिव रोहिष्या निहत्वा रावणं रणे ॥१४॥
14. samāneṣvyati sugrīvaḥ sītayā saha rāghavam ,
śaśāṅkamiva rohiṣyā nihatvā rāvaṇaṃ raṇe.
14. samāneṣyati sugrīvaḥ sītayā saha rāghavam
śaśāṅkam iva rohiṇyā nihatvā rāvaṇam raṇe
14. rāvaṇam raṇe nihatvā sugrīvaḥ rāghavam
sītayā saha rohiṇyā iva śaśāṅkam samāneṣyati
14. After killing Rāvaṇa in battle, Sugrīva will bring Rāghava (Rāma) back with Sītā, just as the moon returns with Rohiṇī (its star-consort).
शतकोटिसहस्राणि लङ्कायां किल रक्षसाम् ।
अयुतानि च षट्त्रिंशत् सहस्राणि शतानि च ॥१५॥
15. śatakoṭisahasrāṇi laṅkāyāṃ kila rakṣasām ,
ayutāni ca ṣaṭtriṃśat sahasrāṇi śatāni ca.
15. śatakoṭisahasrāṇi laṅkāyām kila rakṣasām
ayutāni ca ṣaṭtriṃśat sahasrāṇi śatāni ca
15. laṅkāyām kila rakṣasām śatakoṭisahasrāṇi
ayutāni ca ṣaṭtriṃśat sahasrāṇi ca śatāni ca
15. Indeed, in Lankā, there are a trillion Rākṣasas, along with tens of thousands, and thirty-six hundred thousands (3,600,000) of them.
अहत्वा तांश्च दुर्धर्षान् राक्षसान् कामरूपिणः ।
न शक्यो रावणो हन्तुं येन सा मैथिली हृता ॥१६॥
16. ahatvā tāṃśca durdharṣān rākṣasān kāmarūpiṇaḥ ,
na śakyo rāvaṇo hantuṃ yena sā maithilī hṛtā.
16. ahatvā tān ca durdharṣān rākṣasān kāmarūpiṇaḥ
na śakyaḥ rāvaṇaḥ hantum yena sā maithilī hṛtā
16. yena sā maithilī hṛtā,
tān ca durdharṣān kāmarūpiṇaḥ rākṣasān ahatvā,
rāvaṇaḥ hantum na śakyaḥ
16. Without first killing those unassailable Rākṣasas who can change their forms at will, it is not possible to kill Rāvaṇa, by whom Maithilī (Sītā) was carried off.
ते न शक्या रणे हन्तुमसहायेन लक्ष्मण ।
रावणः क्रूरकर्मा च सुग्रीवेण विशेषतः ॥१७॥
17. te na śakyā raṇe hantumasahāyena lakṣmaṇa ,
rāvaṇaḥ krūrakarmā ca sugrīveṇa viśeṣataḥ.
17. te na śakyāḥ raṇe hantum asahāyena lakṣmaṇa
rāvaṇaḥ krūrakarmā ca sugrīveṇa viśeṣataḥ
17. lakṣmaṇa! te raṇe asahāyena hantum na śakyāḥ.
ca krūrakarmā rāvaṇaḥ sugrīveṇa viśeṣataḥ (hantum na śakyaḥ)
17. O Lakṣmaṇa, those (Rākṣasas) cannot be killed in battle by an unassisted person. And Rāvaṇa, whose deeds are cruel (karma), cannot be killed, especially not by Sugrīva alone.
एवमाख्यातवान् वाली स ह्यभिज्ञो हरीश्वरः ।
आगमस्तु न मे व्यक्तः श्रवात्तस्य ब्रवीम्यहम् ॥१८॥
18. evamākhyātavān vālī sa hyabhijño harīśvaraḥ ,
āgamastu na me vyaktaḥ śravāttasya bravīmyaham.
18. evam ākhyātavān vālī sa hi abhijñaḥ harīśvaraḥ
āgamaḥ tu na me vyaktaḥ śravāt tasya bravīmi aham
18. vālī harīśvaraḥ saḥ hi abhijñaḥ evam ākhyātavān tu me āgamaḥ na vyaktaḥ,
aham tasya śravāt bravīmi
18. Thus spoke Vali, the lord of monkeys (harīśvara), for he is indeed very knowledgeable. However, the precise source (āgama) of this information is not clear to me; I am merely repeating what I heard from him.
त्वत्सहायनिमित्तं वै प्रेषिता हरिपुंगवाः ।
आनेतुं वानरान्युद्धे सुबहून् हरियूथपान् ॥१९॥
19. tvatsahāyanimittaṃ vai preṣitā haripuṃgavāḥ ,
ānetuṃ vānarānyuddhe subahūn hariyūthapān.
19. tvatsahāyanimittam vai preṣitāḥ haripuṅgavāḥ
ānetum vānarān yuddhe subahūn hariyūthapān
19. vai haripuṅgavāḥ tvatsahāyanimittam preṣitāḥ yuddhe
subahūn hariyūthapān vānarān ānetum (preṣitāḥ)
19. Indeed, the most excellent monkeys (haripuṅgava) have been dispatched for the purpose of assisting you, to bring very many leaders of monkey hordes (hariyūthapa) and their followers for the war.
तांश्च प्रतीक्षमाणो ऽयं विक्रान्तान् सुमहाबलान् ।
राघवस्यार्थसिद्ध्यर्थं न निर्याति हरीश्वरः ॥२०॥
20. tāṃśca pratīkṣamāṇo'yaṃ vikrāntān sumahābalān ,
rāghavasyārthasiddhyarthaṃ na niryāti harīśvaraḥ.
20. tān ca pratīkṣamāṇaḥ ayam vikrāntān sumahābalān
rāghavasya arthasiddhyartham na niryāti harīśvaraḥ
20. ayam harīśvaraḥ ca tān vikrāntān sumahābalān pratīkṣamāṇaḥ,
rāghavasya arthasiddhyartham na niryāti
20. This lord of monkeys (harīśvara), awaiting those valiant and exceedingly mighty ones, does not set out, so that Rama's objective (artha) may be accomplished.
कृता तु संस्था सौमित्रे सुग्रीवेण यथापुरा ।
अद्य तैर्वानरैर् सर्वैरागन्तव्यं महाबलैः ॥२१॥
21. kṛtā tu saṃsthā saumitre sugrīveṇa yathāpurā ,
adya tairvānarair sarvairāgantavyaṃ mahābalaiḥ.
21. kṛtā tu saṃsthā saumitre sugrīveṇa yathāpurā
adya taiḥ vānaraiḥ sarvaiḥ āgantavyam mahābalaiḥ
21. tu saumitre sugrīveṇa yathāpurā saṃsthā kṛtā
adya sarvaiḥ taiḥ mahābalaiḥ vānaraiḥ āgantavyam
21. But, O son of Sumitra (Saumitre), an agreement (saṃsthā) was established by Sugriva, just as it was before. Today, all those exceedingly powerful monkeys are expected to arrive.
ऋक्षकोटिसहस्राणि गोलाङ्गूलशतानि च ।
अद्य त्वामुपयास्यन्ति जहि कोपमरिंदम ।
कोट्यो ऽनेकास्तु काकुत्स्थ कपीनां दीप्ततेजसाम् ॥२२॥
22. ṛkṣakoṭisahasrāṇi golāṅgūlaśatāni ca ,
adya tvāmupayāsyanti jahi kopamariṃdama ,
koṭyo'nekāstu kākutstha kapīnāṃ dīptatejasām.
22. ṛkṣakoṭisahasrāṇi golāṅgūlaśatāni
ca adya tvām upayāsyanti jahi
kopam arimdam koṭyaḥ anekāḥ tu
kākutstha kapīnām dīptatejasām
22. arimdam kākutstha kopam jahi adya
ṛkṣakoṭisahasrāṇi golāṅgūlaśatāni
ca anekāḥ koṭyaḥ dīptatejasām
kapīnām tu tvām upayāsyanti
22. O conqueror of foes, thousands of crores of bears and hundreds of langurs will approach you today. Abandon your anger! O scion of Kakutstha, many crores of monkeys of blazing valor (tejas) will also arrive.
तव हि मुखमिदं निरीक्ष्य कोपात् क्षतजनिभे नयने निरीक्षमाणाः ।
हरिवरवनिता न यान्ति शान्तिं प्रथमभयस्य हि शङ्किताः स्म सर्वाः ॥२३॥
23. tava hi mukhamidaṃ nirīkṣya kopāt kṣatajanibhe nayane nirīkṣamāṇāḥ ,
harivaravanitā na yānti śāntiṃ prathamabhayasya hi śaṅkitāḥ sma sarvāḥ.
23. tava hi mukham idam nirīkṣya kopāt
kṣatajanibhe nayane nirīkṣamāṇāḥ
harivaravanitāḥ na yānti śāntim
prathamabhayasya hi śaṅkitāḥ sma sarvāḥ
23. hi tava idam mukham nirīkṣya kopāt
kṣatajanibhe nayane nirīkṣamāṇāḥ
harivaravanitāḥ śāntim na yānti hi
sarvāḥ sma prathamabhayasya śaṅkitāḥ
23. Indeed, seeing this face of yours and observing your eyes, which, due to anger, resemble wounded blood, the wives of the chief monkeys do not find peace. For we are all apprehensive of the previous fear.
