1. Then, having seen them distressed and bewildered by Viśvāmitra's weapons, Vasiṣṭha urged the wish-fulfilling cow, Kāmadhuk, saying, "Produce them by means of your mystic power (yoga)."
तस्या हुम्भारवाज्जाताः काम्बोजा रविसंनिभाः ।
ऊधसस्त्वथ संजाताः पह्लवाः शस्त्रपाणयः ॥२॥
2. tasyā humbhāravājjātāḥ kāmbojā ravisaṃnibhāḥ ,
ūdhasastvatha saṃjātāḥ pahlavāḥ śastrapāṇayaḥ.

2. From her bellow, the Kambojas, radiant like the sun, were born. Then, from her udder, the armed Pahlavas were produced.
योनिदेशाच्च यवनः शकृद्देशाच्छकास्तथा ।
रोमकूपेषु मेच्छाश्च हरीताः सकिरातकाः ॥३॥
3. yonideśācca yavanaḥ śakṛddeśācchakāstathā ,
romakūpeṣu mecchāśca harītāḥ sakirātakāḥ.
3. yonideśāt ca yavanaḥ śakṛddeśāt śakāḥ tathā
romakūpeṣu mlecchāḥ ca harītāḥ sakirātakāḥ

3. From her womb-region, a Yavana (was born); and similarly, from the region of excrement, the Śakas (were born). And in her hair-follicles, the Mlecchas, along with the Harītas and Kirātakas, (were generated).
तैस्तन्निषूदितं सैन्यं विश्वमित्रस्य तत्क्षणात् ।
सपदातिगजं साश्वं सरथं रघुनन्दन ॥४॥
4. taistanniṣūditaṃ sainyaṃ viśvamitrasya tatkṣaṇāt ,
sapadātigajaṃ sāśvaṃ sarathaṃ raghunandana.

sapadātigajam sāśvam saratham raghunandana

4. O descendant of Raghu, Viśvāmitra's army, complete with foot-soldiers, elephants, horses, and chariots, was destroyed by them at that very moment.
दृष्ट्वा निषूदितं सैन्यं वसिष्ठेन महात्मना ।
विश्वामित्रसुतानां तु शतं नानाविधायुधम् ॥५॥
5. dṛṣṭvā niṣūditaṃ sainyaṃ vasiṣṭhena mahātmanā ,
viśvāmitrasutānāṃ tu śataṃ nānāvidhāyudham.

5. Having seen his army destroyed by the great-souled (mahātman) Vasiṣṭha, a hundred of Viśvāmitra's sons, bearing various weapons...
अभ्यधावत् सुसंक्रुद्धं वसिष्ठं जपतां वरम् ।
हुंकारेणैव तान् सर्वान्निर्ददाह महानृषिः ॥६॥
6. abhyadhāvat susaṃkruddhaṃ vasiṣṭhaṃ japatāṃ varam ,
huṃkāreṇaiva tān sarvānnirdadāha mahānṛṣiḥ.
6. abhyadhāvat susaṃkruddham vasiṣṭham japatām varam
huṃkāreṇa eva tān sarvān nirdadāha mahānṛṣiḥ
6. susaṃkruddham [śatam putrāḥ] japatām varam vasiṣṭham
abhyadhāvat mahānṛṣiḥ huṃkāreṇa eva tān sarvān nirdadāha
6. a hundred of Viśvāmitra's sons, exceedingly furious, rushed towards Vasiṣṭha, the foremost among chanters. The great sage (ṛṣi) then burned all of them down with a mere roar (huṃkāra).
ते साश्वरथपादाता वसिष्ठेन महात्मना ।
भस्मीकृता मुहूर्तेन विश्वामित्रसुतास्तदा ॥७॥
7. te sāśvarathapādātā vasiṣṭhena mahātmanā ,
bhasmīkṛtā muhūrtena viśvāmitrasutāstadā.
7. te sāśvarathapādātā vasiṣṭhena mahātmanā
bhasmīkṛtā muhūrtena viśvāmitrasutāḥ tadā

7. Then, those sons of Viśvāmitra, along with their horses, chariots, and foot-soldiers, were turned into ashes in a single moment by the great-souled (mahātman) Vasiṣṭha.
दृष्ट्वा विनाशितान्पुत्रान्बलं च सुमहायशाः ।
सव्रीडश्चिन्तयाविष्टो विश्वामित्रो ऽभवत्तदा ॥८॥
8. dṛṣṭvā vināśitānputrānbalaṃ ca sumahāyaśāḥ ,
savrīḍaścintayāviṣṭo viśvāmitro'bhavattadā.
8. dṛṣṭvā vināśitān putrān balam ca sumahāyaśāḥ
savrīḍaḥ cintayā āviṣṭaḥ viśvāmitraḥ abhavat tadā

8. Having seen his sons and army destroyed, the highly renowned Viśvāmitra became filled with shame and worry at that time.
संदुर इव निर्वेगो भग्नदंष्ट्र इवोरगः ।
उपरक्त इवादित्यः सद्यो निष्प्रभतां गतः ॥९॥
9. saṃdura iva nirvego bhagnadaṃṣṭra ivoragaḥ ,
uparakta ivādityaḥ sadyo niṣprabhatāṃ gataḥ.
9. sanduraḥ iva nirvegaḥ bhagnadaṃṣṭraḥ iva uragaḥ
uparaktaḥ iva ādityaḥ sadyaḥ niṣprabhatām gataḥ
9. nirvegaḥ sanduraḥ iva,
bhagnadaṃṣṭraḥ uragaḥ iva,
uparaktaḥ ādityaḥ iva,
sadyaḥ niṣprabhatām gataḥ
9. He instantly lost his splendor, becoming like an elephant without its vigor, a serpent with broken fangs, or an eclipsed sun.
हतपुत्रबलो दीनो लूनपक्ष इव द्विजः ।
हतदर्पो हतोत्साहो निर्वेदं समपद्यत ॥१०॥
10. hataputrabalo dīno lūnapakṣa iva dvijaḥ ,
hatadarpo hatotsāho nirvedaṃ samapadyata.
10. hataputrabalaḥ dīnaḥ lūnapakṣaḥ iva dvijaḥ
hatadarpaḥ hatotsāhaḥ nirvedam samapadyata
10. hataputrabalaḥ dīnaḥ,
lūnapakṣaḥ dvijaḥ iva,
hatadarpaḥ hatotsāhaḥ nirvedam samapadyata
10. With his sons and army destroyed, dejected, like a bird with clipped wings, his pride and enthusiasm gone, he fell into despair.
स पुत्रमेकं राज्याय पालयेति नियुज्य च ।
पृथिवीं क्षत्रधर्मेण वनमेवान्वपद्यत ॥११॥
11. sa putramekaṃ rājyāya pālayeti niyujya ca ,
pṛthivīṃ kṣatradharmeṇa vanamevānvapadyata.
11. saḥ putram ekam rājyāya pālaya iti niyujya ca
pṛthivīm kṣatradharmeṇa vanam eva anvapadyata
11. saḥ ekam putram rājyāya "pālaya" iti niyujya ca,
kṣatradharmeṇa pṛthivīm vanam eva anvapadyata
11. Having appointed one son to the kingdom with the instruction "rule!", and upholding the natural law (dharma) of a warrior, he then went into the forest itself.
स गत्वा हिमवत्पार्श्वं किंनरोरगसेवितम् ।
महादेवप्रसादार्थं तपस्तेपे महातपाः ॥१२॥
12. sa gatvā himavatpārśvaṃ kiṃnaroragasevitam ,
mahādevaprasādārthaṃ tapastepe mahātapāḥ.
12. saḥ gatvā himavat pārśvam kiṃnaroraga sevitam
mahādeva prasāda artham tapas tepe mahātapāḥ
12. That great ascetic, having gone to the side of the Himalayas, which was frequented by Kinnaras and serpents, performed severe austerities (tapas) to gain the grace of Mahadeva.
केन चित्त्वथ कालेन देवेशो वृषभध्वजः ।
दर्शयामास वरदो विश्वामित्रं महामुनिम् ॥१३॥
13. kena cittvatha kālena deveśo vṛṣabhadhvajaḥ ,
darśayāmāsa varado viśvāmitraṃ mahāmunim.
13. kena cit tu atha kālena deveśaḥ vṛṣabhadhvajaḥ
darśayāmāsa varadaḥ viśvāmitram mahāmunim
13. Then, after some time, the boon-giving lord of gods, Shiva (Vṛṣabhadhvaja), revealed himself to the great sage Vishvamitra.
किमर्थं तप्यसे राजन्ब्रूहि यत्ते विवक्षितम् ।
वरदो ऽस्मि वरो यस्ते काङ्क्षितः सो ऽभिधीयताम् ॥१४॥
14. kimarthaṃ tapyase rājanbrūhi yatte vivakṣitam ,
varado'smi varo yaste kāṅkṣitaḥ so'bhidhīyatām.
14. kim artham tapyase rājan brūhi yat te vivakṣitam
varadaḥ asmi varaḥ yaḥ te kāṅkṣitaḥ saḥ abhidhīyatām
14. O King, for what purpose are you performing austerities (tapas)? Tell me what is desired by you. I am a giver of boons; let that boon which is desired by you be stated.
एवमुक्तस्तु देवेन विश्वामित्रो महातपाः ।
प्रणिपत्य महादेवमिदं वचनमब्रवीत् ॥१५॥
15. evamuktastu devena viśvāmitro mahātapāḥ ,
praṇipatya mahādevamidaṃ vacanamabravīt.
15. evam uktaḥ tu devena viśvāmitraḥ mahātapāḥ
praṇipatya mahādevam idam vacanam abravīt
15. But Vishvamitra, the great ascetic, thus addressed by the god, bowed down to Mahadeva and spoke these words.
यदि तुष्टो महादेव धनुर्वेदो ममानघ ।
साङ्गोपाङ्गोपनिषदः सरहस्यः प्रदीयताम् ॥१६॥
16. yadi tuṣṭo mahādeva dhanurvedo mamānagha ,
sāṅgopāṅgopaniṣadaḥ sarahasyaḥ pradīyatām.
16. yadi tuṣṭaḥ mahādeva dhanurvedaḥ mama anagha
sāṅgopāṅgopaniṣadaḥ sarahasyaḥ pradīyatām
16. anagha mahādeva yadi tuṣṭaḥ mama sāṅgopāṅgopaniṣadaḥ
sarahasyaḥ dhanurvedaḥ pradīyatām
16. O sinless Mahadeva, if you are pleased, let the Dhanurveda (science of archery) be granted to me, complete with all its auxiliary branches, sub-branches, secret doctrines, and mysteries.
यानि देवेषु चास्त्राणि दानवेषु महर्षिषु ।
गन्धर्वयक्षरक्षःसु प्रतिभान्तु ममानघ ॥१७॥
17. yāni deveṣu cāstrāṇi dānaveṣu maharṣiṣu ,
gandharvayakṣarakṣaḥsu pratibhāntu mamānagha.
17. yāni deveṣu ca astrāṇi dānaveṣu maharṣiṣu
gandharvayakṣarakṣaḥsu pratibhāntu mama anagha
17. anagha yāni ca astrāṇi deveṣu dānaveṣu maharṣiṣu
gandharvayakṣarakṣaḥsu mama pratibhāntu
17. O sinless one, may all those divine weapons (astras) that exist among the gods, among the Danavas (demons), among the great sages, and among the Gandharvas, Yakshas, and Rakshasas, manifest themselves to me.
तव प्रसादाद्भवतु देवदेव ममेप्सितम् ।
एवमस्त्विति देवेशो वाक्यमुक्त्वा दिवं गतः ॥१८॥
18. tava prasādādbhavatu devadeva mamepsitam ,
evamastviti deveśo vākyamuktvā divaṃ gataḥ.
18. tava prasādāt bhavatu devadeva mama īpsitam
evam astu iti deveśaḥ vākyam uktvā divam gataḥ
18. devadeva tava prasādāt mama īpsitam bhavatu
iti evam astu vākyam uktvā deveśaḥ divam gataḥ
18. O God of gods, may my desired outcome be achieved by your grace. Having said, 'So be it!', the Lord of gods (Mahadeva) then departed to heaven.
प्राप्य चास्त्राणि राजर्षिर्विश्वामित्रो महाबलः ।
दर्पेण महता युक्तो दर्पपूर्णो ऽभवत्तदा ॥१९॥
19. prāpya cāstrāṇi rājarṣirviśvāmitro mahābalaḥ ,
darpeṇa mahatā yukto darpapūrṇo'bhavattadā.
19. prāpya ca astrāṇi rājarṣiḥ viśvāmitraḥ mahābalaḥ
darpeṇa mahatā yuktaḥ darpapūrṇaḥ abhavat tadā
19. ca astrāṇi prāpya rājarṣiḥ mahābalaḥ viśvāmitraḥ
mahatā darpeṇa yuktaḥ tadā darpapūrṇaḥ abhavat
19. Having obtained the divine weapons (astras), the royal sage (rājarṣi) Vishvamitra, who was mighty, then became filled with great pride and arrogance.
विवर्धमानो वीर्येण समुद्र इव पर्वणि ।
हतमेव तदा मेने वसिष्ठमृषिसत्तमम् ॥२०॥
20. vivardhamāno vīryeṇa samudra iva parvaṇi ,
hatameva tadā mene vasiṣṭhamṛṣisattamam.
20. vivardhamānaḥ vīryeṇa samudraḥ iva parvaṇi
hatam eva tadā mene vasiṣṭham ṛṣisattamam
20. vivardhamānaḥ vīryeṇa parvaṇi samudraḥ iva
tadā vasiṣṭham ṛṣisattamam hatam eva mene
20. Increasing in strength (vīrya) like the ocean on the full moon day, he then considered Vasiṣṭha, the foremost of sages, to be certainly slain.
ततो गत्वाश्रमपदं मुमोचास्त्राणि पार्थिवः ।
यैस्तत्तपोवनं सर्वं निर्दग्धं चास्त्रतेजसा ॥२१॥
21. tato gatvāśramapadaṃ mumocāstrāṇi pārthivaḥ ,
yaistattapovanaṃ sarvaṃ nirdagdhaṃ cāstratejasā.
21. tataḥ gatvā āśramapadam mumoca astrāṇi pārthivaḥ
yaiḥ tat tapovanam sarvam nirdagdham ca astratejasā
21. tataḥ pārthivaḥ āśramapadam gatvā astrāṇi mumoca,
yaiḥ ca tat sarvam tapovanam astratejasā nirdagdham
21. Then, having gone to the hermitage, the king unleashed his weapons, by the brilliance (tejas) of which that entire forest hermitage was scorched.
उदीर्यमाणमस्त्रं तद्विश्वामित्रस्य धीमतः ।
दृष्ट्वा विप्रद्रुता भीता मुनयः शतशो दिशः ॥२२॥
22. udīryamāṇamastraṃ tadviśvāmitrasya dhīmataḥ ,
dṛṣṭvā vipradrutā bhītā munayaḥ śataśo diśaḥ.
22. udīryamāṇam astram tat viśvāmitrasya dhīmataḥ
dṛṣṭvā vipradrutāḥ bhītāḥ munayaḥ śataśaḥ diśaḥ
22. bhītāḥ munayaḥ dhīmataḥ viśvāmitrasya tat
udīryamāṇam astram dṛṣṭvā vipradrutāḥ śataśaḥ diśaḥ
22. Having seen that weapon (astra) being discharged by the intelligent Viśvāmitra, the terrified sages (muni) scattered in hundreds of directions.
वसिष्ठस्य च ये शिष्यास्तथैव मृगपक्षिणः ।
विद्रवन्ति भयाद्भीता नानादिग्भ्यः सहस्रशः ॥२३॥
23. vasiṣṭhasya ca ye śiṣyāstathaiva mṛgapakṣiṇaḥ ,
vidravanti bhayādbhītā nānādigbhyaḥ sahasraśaḥ.
23. vasiṣṭhasya ca ye śiṣyāḥ tathā eva mṛgapakṣiṇaḥ
vidravanti bhayāt bhītāḥ nānādigbhyaḥ sahasraśaḥ
23. vasiṣṭhasya ye śiṣyāḥ ca tathā eva mṛgapakṣiṇaḥ
bhayāt bhītāḥ nānādigbhyaḥ sahasraśaḥ vidravanti
23. And those who were Vasiṣṭha's disciples, as well as the deer and birds, all fled, terrified by fear, by thousands in different directions.
वसिष्ठस्याश्रमपदं शून्यमासीन्महात्मनः ।
मुहूर्तमिव निःशब्दमासीदीरिणसंनिभम् ॥२४॥
24. vasiṣṭhasyāśramapadaṃ śūnyamāsīnmahātmanaḥ ,
muhūrtamiva niḥśabdamāsīdīriṇasaṃnibham.
24. Vasiṣṭhasya āśramapadam śūnyam āsīt mahātmanaḥ
muhūrtam iva niḥśabdam āsīt īriṇasaṃnibham
24. mahātmanaḥ Vasiṣṭhasya āśramapadam śūnyam āsīt
muhūrtam iva niḥśabdam īriṇasaṃnibham āsīt
24. The hermitage (āśrama) of the great-souled Vasiṣṭha became desolate. For a moment, it was utterly silent, resembling a barren wasteland.
वदतो वै वसिष्ठस्य मा भैष्टेति मुहुर्मुहुः ।
नाशयाम्यद्य गाधेयं नीहारमिव भास्करः ॥२५॥
25. vadato vai vasiṣṭhasya mā bhaiṣṭeti muhurmuhuḥ ,
nāśayāmyadya gādheyaṃ nīhāramiva bhāskaraḥ.
25. vadataḥ vai Vasiṣṭhasya mā bhaiṣṭa iti muhurmuhuḥ
nāśayāmi adya Gādheyam nīhāram iva bhāskaraḥ
25. Vasiṣṭhasya vadataḥ vai muhurmuhuḥ mā bhaiṣṭa
iti adya Gādheyam nāśayāmi nīhāram iva bhāskaraḥ
25. While Vasiṣṭha repeatedly declared, "Do not fear!", he then said, "Today, I will destroy the son of Gādhi (Viśvāmitra), just as the sun dispels mist."
एवमुक्त्वा महातेजा वसिष्ठो जपतां वरः ।
विश्वामित्रं तदा वाक्यं सरोषमिदमब्रवीत् ॥२६॥
26. evamuktvā mahātejā vasiṣṭho japatāṃ varaḥ ,
viśvāmitraṃ tadā vākyaṃ saroṣamidamabravīt.
26. evam uktvā mahātejāḥ Vasiṣṭhaḥ japatām varaḥ
Viśvāmitram tadā vākyam saroṣam idam abravīt
26. evam uktvā mahātejāḥ japatām varaḥ Vasiṣṭhaḥ
tadā saroṣam idam vākyam Viśvāmitram abravīt
26. Having spoken thus, Vasiṣṭha, the greatly effulgent and foremost among chanters, then angrily addressed this statement to Viśvāmitra.
आश्रमं चिरसंवृद्धं यद्विनाशितवानसि ।
दुराचारो ऽसि यन्मूढ तस्मात्त्वं न भविष्यसि ॥२७॥
27. āśramaṃ cirasaṃvṛddhaṃ yadvināśitavānasi ,
durācāro'si yanmūḍha tasmāttvaṃ na bhaviṣyasi.
27. āśramam cirasaṃvṛddham yat vināśitavān asi
durācāraḥ asi yat mūḍha tasmāt tvam na bhaviṣyasi
27. yat cirasaṃvṛddham āśramam vināśitavān asi yat
durācāraḥ asi mūḍha tasmāt tvam na bhaviṣyasi
27. Because you have destroyed this hermitage (āśrama) that flourished for a long time, and because you are ill-behaved, O deluded one, therefore you shall cease to exist.
इत्युक्त्वा परमक्रुद्धो दण्डमुद्यम्य सत्वरः ।
विधूम इव कालाग्निर्यमदण्डमिवापरम् ॥२८॥
28. ityuktvā paramakruddho daṇḍamudyamya satvaraḥ ,
vidhūma iva kālāgniryamadaṇḍamivāparam.
28. iti uktvā parama kruddhaḥ daṇḍam udyamya satvaraḥ
vidhūmaḥ iva kālāgniḥ yamadaṇḍam iva aparam
28. (saḥ) iti uktvā parama kruddhaḥ satvaraḥ daṇḍam
udyamya kālāgniḥ vidhūmaḥ iva aparam yamadaṇḍam iva
28. Having spoken thus, extremely enraged, he swiftly lifted his staff, appearing like the smokeless fire of cosmic dissolution (kālāgni), or like another staff of Yama.
