स वानरमहाराजः शयानः शरविक्षतः ।
प्रत्युक्तो हेतुमद्वाक्यैर्नोत्तरं प्रत्यपद्यत ॥१॥

1. That great monkey king, lying wounded by arrows, although addressed with well-reasoned words, did not offer a reply.

रामबाणेन चाक्रान्तो जीवितान्ते मुमोह सः ॥२॥
2. aśmabhiḥ paribhinnāṅgaḥ pādapairāhato bhṛśam ,
rāmabāṇena cākrānto jīvitānte mumoha saḥ.

2. His body shattered by stones, severely struck by trees, and overwhelmed by Rama's arrow, he fainted at the moment of his death.
तं भार्याबाणमोक्षेण रामदत्तेन संयुगे ।
हतं प्लवगशार्दूलं तारा शुश्राव वालिनम् ॥३॥
3. taṃ bhāryābāṇamokṣeṇa rāmadattena saṃyuge ,
hataṃ plavagaśārdūlaṃ tārā śuśrāva vālinam.

3. Tara heard that Vali, the tiger among monkeys, was killed in battle by Rama's arrow-shot, which resulted in a wife's widowhood.
सा सपुत्राप्रियं श्रुत्वा वधं भर्तुः सुदारुणम् ।
निष्पपात भृशं त्रस्ता विविधाद्गिरिगह्वरात् ॥४॥
4. sā saputrāpriyaṃ śrutvā vadhaṃ bhartuḥ sudāruṇam ,
niṣpapāta bhṛśaṃ trastā vividhādgirigahvarāt.

niṣpapāta bhṛśam trastā vividhāt girigahvarāt

4. Upon hearing the very terrible and unwelcome news of her husband's death, she, accompanied by her son, greatly terrified, rushed out from the various mountain caves.
ये त्वङ्गदपरीवारा वानरा हि महाबलाः ।
ते सकार्मुकमालोक्य रामं त्रस्ताः प्रदुद्रुवुः ॥५॥
5. ye tvaṅgadaparīvārā vānarā hi mahābalāḥ ,
te sakārmukamālokya rāmaṃ trastāḥ pradudruvuḥ.
5. ye tu aṅgadapvarāḥ vānarāḥ hi mahābalāḥ te
sakārmukam ālokya rāmam trastāḥ pradudruvuḥ

5. Indeed, those mighty monkeys who were Angada's followers, upon seeing Rama equipped with his bow, became terrified and fled.
सा ददर्श ततस्त्रस्तान् हरीनापततो द्रुतम् ।
यूथादिव परिभ्रष्टान्मृगान्निहतयूथपान् ॥६॥
6. sā dadarśa tatastrastān harīnāpatato drutam ,
yūthādiva paribhraṣṭānmṛgānnihatayūthapān.
6. sā dadarśa tataḥ trastān harīn āpatataḥ drutam
yūthāt iva paribhraṣṭān mṛgān nihatayūthapān
6. sā tataḥ drutam āpatataḥ trastān nihatayūthapān

6. She then saw the terrified monkeys rushing quickly, scattered like deer whose leaders had been slain from their herd.
तानुवाच समासाद्य दुःखितान्दुःखिता सती ।
राम वित्रासितान् सर्वाननुबद्धानिवेषुभिः ॥७॥
7. tānuvāca samāsādya duḥkhitānduḥkhitā satī ,
rāma vitrāsitān sarvānanubaddhāniveṣubhiḥ.
7. tān uvāca samāsādya duḥkhitān duḥkhitā satī
rāmavitrāsitān sarvān anubaddhān iva iṣubhiḥ
7. duḥkhitā satī samāsādya दुःखितान् rāmavitrāsitān

7. Being distressed herself, she approached all those frightened and distressed monkeys, who seemed terrified by Rāma and as if pursued by arrows, and then she spoke to them.
वानरा राजसिंहस्य यस्य यूयं पुरःसराः ।
तं विहाय सुवित्रस्ताः कस्माद्द्रवत दुर्गताः ॥८॥
8. vānarā rājasiṃhasya yasya yūyaṃ puraḥsarāḥ ,
taṃ vihāya suvitrastāḥ kasmāddravata durgatāḥ.
8. vānarāḥ rājasiṃhasya yasya yūyam puraḥsarāḥ
tam vihāya suvitrastāḥ kasmāt dravata durgatāḥ
8. vānarāḥ yasya rājasiṃhasya yūyam puraḥsarāḥ,
tam vihāya suvitrastāḥ durgatāḥ kasmāt dravata
8. O monkeys, you who are the forerunners of that lion among kings, why do you, so utterly terrified and distressed, flee after abandoning him?
राज्यहेतोः स चेद्भ्राता भ्राता रौद्रेण पातितः ।
रामेण प्रसृतैर्दूरान्मार्गणैर्दूर पातिभिः ॥९॥
9. rājyahetoḥ sa cedbhrātā bhrātā raudreṇa pātitaḥ ,
rāmeṇa prasṛtairdūrānmārgaṇairdūra pātibhiḥ.
9. rājyahetoḥ sa cet bhrātā bhrātā raudreṇa pātitaḥ
rāmeṇa prasṛtaiḥ dūrāt mārgaṇaiḥ dūrapātibhiḥ
9. saḥ bhrātā cet rājyahetoḥ bhrātā raudreṇa rāmeṇa
dūrāt prasṛtaiḥ dūrapātibhiḥ mārgaṇaiḥ pātitaḥ
9. If, for the sake of the kingdom, that brother (Vālin) was slain - yes, brother - by the cruel Rāma, with far-reaching arrows shot from afar.
कपिपत्न्या वचः श्रुत्वा कपयः कामरूपिणः ।
प्राप्तकालमविश्लिष्टमूचुर्वचनमङ्गनाम् ॥१०॥
10. kapipatnyā vacaḥ śrutvā kapayaḥ kāmarūpiṇaḥ ,
prāptakālamaviśliṣṭamūcurvacanamaṅganām.
10. kapipatnyāḥ vacaḥ śrutvā kapayaḥ kāmarūpiṇaḥ
prāptakālam aviśliṣṭam ūcuḥ vacanam aṅganām

10. Having heard the words of Vāli's wife, the monkeys, who could assume any form at will, spoke timely and coherent words to the woman.
जीव पुत्रे निवर्तस्य पुत्रं रक्षस्व चान्दगम् ।
अन्तको राम रूपेण हत्वा नयति वालिनम् ॥११॥
11. jīva putre nivartasya putraṃ rakṣasva cāndagam ,
antako rāma rūpeṇa hatvā nayati vālinam.
11. jīva putre nivartasva putram rakṣasva ca
andagam antakaḥ rāma rūpeṇa hatvā nayati vālinam
11. (putre!) jīva nivartasva.
ca putram andagam rakṣasva.
antakaḥ rāma rūpeṇa vālinam hatvā nayati.
11. O son (Aṅgada), live and return! And (O Tārā,) protect your son, Aṅgada. For Death, in the form of Rama, has killed Vāli and is taking him away.
क्षिप्तान् वृक्षान् समाविध्य विपुलाश्च शिलास्तथा ।
वाली वज्रसमैर्बाणैर्वज्रेणेव निपातितः ॥१२॥
12. kṣiptān vṛkṣān samāvidhya vipulāśca śilāstathā ,
vālī vajrasamairbāṇairvajreṇeva nipātitaḥ.
12. kṣiptān vṛkṣān samāvidhya vipulāḥ ca śilāḥ tathā
vālī vajrasamaiḥ bāṇaiḥ vajreṇa iva nipātitaḥ
12. vālī kṣiptān vṛkṣān ca tathā vipulāḥ śilāḥ
samāvidhya vajrasamaiḥ bāṇaiḥ vajreṇa iva nipātitaḥ
12. Though he had struck through the hurled trees and similarly the massive rocks, Vāli was struck down by arrows resembling thunderbolts, as if by a thunderbolt (vajra) itself.
अभिद्रुतमिदं सर्वं विद्रुतं प्रसृतं बलम् ।
अस्मिन्प्लवगशार्दूले हते शक्रसमप्रभे ॥१३॥
13. abhidrutamidaṃ sarvaṃ vidrutaṃ prasṛtaṃ balam ,
asminplavagaśārdūle hate śakrasamaprabhe.
13. abhidrutam idam sarvam vidrutam prasṛtam balam
asmin plavagaśārdūle hate śakrasamaprabhe
13. asmin śakrasamaprabhe plavagaśārdūle hate (sati),
idam sarvam balam abhidrutam,
vidrutam,
prasṛtam (jātam).
13. When this lion among monkeys (plavagaśārdūla), whose splendor was equal to Indra's, was slain, this entire army became assailed, dispersed, and scattered.
रक्ष्यतां नगरं शूरैरङ्गदश्चाभिषिच्यताम् ।
पदस्थं वालिनः पुत्रं भजिष्यन्ति प्लवंगमाः ॥१४॥
14. rakṣyatāṃ nagaraṃ śūrairaṅgadaścābhiṣicyatām ,
padasthaṃ vālinaḥ putraṃ bhajiṣyanti plavaṃgamāḥ.
14. rakṣyatām nagaram śūraiḥ aṅgadaḥ ca abhiṣicyatām
| padastham vālinaḥ putram bhajiṣyanti plavaṅgamāḥ
14. śūraiḥ nagaram rakṣyatām ca aṅgadaḥ abhiṣicyatām
plavaṅgamāḥ vālinaḥ putram padastham bhajiṣyanti
14. Let the city be protected by the brave, and let Aṅgada be consecrated. The monkeys will serve Vāli's son, who is now in his rightful position.
अथ वा रुचिरं स्थानमिह ते रुचिरानने ।
आविशन्ति हि दुर्गाणि क्षिप्रमद्यैव वानराः ॥१५॥
15. atha vā ruciraṃ sthānamiha te rucirānane ,
āviśanti hi durgāṇi kṣipramadyaiva vānarāḥ.
15. atha vā ruciram sthānam iha te rucirānanā |
āviśanti hi durgāṇi kṣipram adya eva vānarāḥ
15. atha vā rucirānanā te ruciram sthānam iha hi
vānarāḥ durgāṇi kṣipram adya eva āviśanti
15. Or else, O beautiful-faced one, a charming place is here for you. Indeed, the monkeys will quickly enter difficult-to-access places even today.
अभार्याः सह भार्याश्च सन्त्यत्र वनचारिणः ।
लुब्धेभ्यो विप्रयुक्तेभ्यः स्वेभ्यो नस्तुमुलं भयम् ॥१६॥
16. abhāryāḥ saha bhāryāśca santyatra vanacāriṇaḥ ,
lubdhebhyo viprayuktebhyaḥ svebhyo nastumulaṃ bhayam.
16. abhāryāḥ saha bhāryāḥ ca santi atra vanacāriṇaḥ |
lubdhebhyaḥ viprayuktebhyaḥ svebhyaḥ naḥ tumulam bhayam
16. atra abhāryāḥ ca saha bhāryāḥ vanacāriṇaḥ santi naḥ
lubdhebhyaḥ viprayuktebhyaḥ svebhyaḥ tumulam bhayam (asti)
16. Here, there are forest-dwellers (vanacāriṇaḥ) both without wives and with their wives. However, a great and tumultuous fear (bhayam) comes to us from our own people who are greedy and separated (from us).
अल्पान्तरगतानां तु श्रुत्वा वचनमङ्गना ।
आत्मनः प्रतिरूपं सा बभाषे चारुहासिनी ॥१७॥
17. alpāntaragatānāṃ tu śrutvā vacanamaṅganā ,
ātmanaḥ pratirūpaṃ sā babhāṣe cāruhāsinī.
17. alpa-antara-gatānām tu śrutvā vacanam aṅganā
| ātmanaḥ pratirūpam sā babhāṣe cāru-hāsinī
17. tu aṅganā cāru-hāsinī alpa-antara-gatānām
vacanam śrutvā sā ātmanaḥ pratirūpam babhāṣe
17. But when she, the beautiful-smiling woman, heard the words of those who had gone a short distance, she spoke words appropriate to her own (ātman) nature.
पुत्रेण मम किं कार्यं किं राज्येन किमात्मना ।
कपिसिंहे महाभागे तस्मिन्भर्तरि नश्यति ॥१८॥
18. putreṇa mama kiṃ kāryaṃ kiṃ rājyena kimātmanā ,
kapisiṃhe mahābhāge tasminbhartari naśyati.
18. putreṇa mama kim kāryam kim rājyena kim ātmanā
kapisiṃhe mahābhāge tasmin bhartari naśyati
18. mama putreṇa kim kāryam rājyena kim ātmanā kim

18. What is the use of a son to me? What is the use of a kingdom? What is the use of my very self (ātman), now that my greatly blessed husband, that lion among monkeys, is perishing?
पादमूलं गमिष्यामि तस्यैवाहं महात्मनः ।
यो ऽसौ रामप्रयुक्तेन शरेण विनिपातितः ॥१९॥
19. pādamūlaṃ gamiṣyāmi tasyaivāhaṃ mahātmanaḥ ,
yo'sau rāmaprayuktena śareṇa vinipātitaḥ.
19. pādamūlam gamiṣyāmi tasya eva aham mahātmanaḥ
yaḥ asau rāmaprayuktena śareṇa vinipātitaḥ
19. aham tasya eva mahātmanaḥ pādamūlam gamiṣyāmi
yaḥ asau rāmaprayuktena śareṇa vinipātitaḥ
19. I will go to the very feet of that great-souled (mahātman) one, who was struck down by an arrow dispatched by Rāma.
एवमुक्त्वा प्रदुद्राव रुदती शोककर्शिता ।
शिरश्चोरश्च बाहुभ्यां दुःखेन समभिघ्नती ॥२०॥
20. evamuktvā pradudrāva rudatī śokakarśitā ,
śiraścoraśca bāhubhyāṃ duḥkhena samabhighnatī.
20. evam uktvā pradudrāva rudatī śokakarśitā śiraḥ
ca uraḥ ca bāhubhyām duḥkhena samabhighnatī
20. evam uktvā śokakarśitā rudatī sā pradudrāva
duḥkhena bāhubhyām śiraḥ ca uraḥ ca samabhighnatī
20. Having spoken thus, emaciated by sorrow, she ran forward weeping, sorrowfully striking her head and chest with both her arms.
आव्रजन्ती ददर्शाथ पतिं निपतितं भुवि ।
हन्तारं दानवेन्द्राणां समरेष्वनिवर्तिनाम् ॥२१॥
21. āvrajantī dadarśātha patiṃ nipatitaṃ bhuvi ,
hantāraṃ dānavendrāṇāṃ samareṣvanivartinām.
21. āvrajantī dadarśa atha patim nipatitam bhuvi
hantāram dānaveindrāṇām samareṣu anivartinām
21. āvrajantī atha sā dadarśa patim bhuvi nipatitam
dānaveindrāṇām anivartinām samareṣu hantāram
21. As she came near, she then saw her husband, the slayer of the demon-chiefs who never retreated in battles, lying fallen on the ground.
क्षेप्तारं पर्वतेन्द्राणां वज्राणामिव वासवम् ।
महावातसमाविष्टं महामेघौघनिःस्वनम् ॥२२॥
22. kṣeptāraṃ parvatendrāṇāṃ vajrāṇāmiva vāsavam ,
mahāvātasamāviṣṭaṃ mahāmeghaughaniḥsvanam.
22. kṣeptāram parvatendrāṇām vajrāṇām iva vāsavam
mahāvātasamāviṣṭam mahāmeghaughaniḥsvanam
22. vāsavam iva parvatendrāṇām vajrāṇām kṣeptāram
mahāvātasamāviṣṭam mahāmeghaughaniḥsvanam
22. Like Vāsava (Indra) who hurls thunderbolts at the chief of mountains, (he was now) overcome by a great wind and resounding like a mass of mighty clouds.
शक्रतुल्यपराक्रान्तं वृष्ट्वेवोपरतं घनम् ।
नर्दन्तं नर्दतां भीमं शूरं शूरेण पातितम् ॥२३॥
23. śakratulyaparākrāntaṃ vṛṣṭvevoparataṃ ghanam ,
nardantaṃ nardatāṃ bhīmaṃ śūraṃ śūreṇa pātitam.
23. śakratulyaparākrāntam vṛṣṭvā iva uparatam ghanam
nardantam nardatām bhīmam śūram śūreṇa pātitam
23. śūram śakratulyaparākrāntam ghanam iva vṛṣṭvā
uparatam bhīmam nardatām nardantam śūreṇa pātitam
23. Whose valor was equal to Śakra's (Indra), like a cloud that has ceased after pouring rain; roaring terrifyingly among other roarers, a hero struck down by a hero.
शार्दूलेनामिषस्यार्थे मृगराजं यथा हतम् ।
अर्चितं सर्वलोकस्य सपताकं सवेदिकम् ॥२४॥
24. śārdūlenāmiṣasyārthe mṛgarājaṃ yathā hatam ,
arcitaṃ sarvalokasya sapatākaṃ savedikam.
24. śārdūlena āmiṣasya arthe mṛgarājam yathā
hatam arcitam sarvalokasya sapatākam savedikam
24. yathā śārdūlena āmiṣasya arthe mṛgarājam
hatam sarvalokasya arcitam sapatākam savedikam
24. Like a king of beasts (mṛgarāja) killed by a tiger for the sake of meat; (he was once) honored by all the worlds, complete with banners and altars.
नागहेतोः सुपर्णेन चैत्यमुन्मथितं यथा ।
अवष्टभ्यावतिष्ठन्तं ददर्श धनुरूर्जितम् ॥२५॥
25. nāgahetoḥ suparṇena caityamunmathitaṃ yathā ,
avaṣṭabhyāvatiṣṭhantaṃ dadarśa dhanurūrjitam.
25. nāgahetoḥ suparṇena caityam unmathitam yathā
avaṣṭabhya avatiṣṭhantam dadarśa dhanuḥ ūrjitam
25. yathā suparṇena nāgahetoḥ caityam unmathitam,
saḥ (implied) avaṣṭabhya avatiṣṭhantam (tam) ca ūrjitam dhanuḥ dadarśa
25. Just as a sacred tree (caitya) is uprooted by Suparṇa (Garuḍa) for the sake of the Nāgas (serpent deities), (so too the observer) saw (the hero, previously described, still) standing firm, having grasped (his weapon), and (he saw) his mighty bow.
रामं रामानुजं चैव भर्तुश्चैवानुजं शुभा ।
तानतीत्य समासाद्य भर्तारं निहतं रणे ॥२६॥
26. rāmaṃ rāmānujaṃ caiva bhartuścaivānujaṃ śubhā ,
tānatītya samāsādya bhartāraṃ nihataṃ raṇe.
26. rāmam rāmānujam ca eva bhartuḥ ca eva anujam
śubhā tān atītya samāsādya bhartāram nihataṃ raṇe
26. śubhā rāmam ca eva rāmānujam ca eva bhartuḥ anujam
tān atītya raṇe nihataṃ bhartāram samāsādya
26. The auspicious Mandodari, having disregarded Rama, and indeed Rama's younger brother Lakshmana, and also her husband's younger brother Kumbhakarna, arrived to find her husband slain in battle.
समीक्ष्य व्यथिता भूमौ संभ्रान्ता निपपात ह ।
सुप्तेव पुनरुत्थाय आर्यपुत्रेति क्रोशती ॥२७॥
27. samīkṣya vyathitā bhūmau saṃbhrāntā nipapāta ha ,
supteva punarutthāya āryaputreti krośatī.
27. samīkṣya vyathitā bhūmau sambhrāntā nipapāta ha
suptā iva punar utthāya āryaputra iti krośatī
27. samīkṣya vyathitā sambhrāntā bhūmau nipapāta ha

27. Having seen him, she, distressed and bewildered, fell to the ground, as if asleep. Then, having risen again, she cried out, "O my noble husband!"
रुरोद सा पतिं दृष्ट्वा संदितं मृत्युदामभिः ।
तामवेक्ष्य तु सुग्रीवः क्रोशन्तीं कुररीमिव ॥२८॥
28. ruroda sā patiṃ dṛṣṭvā saṃditaṃ mṛtyudāmabhiḥ ,
tāmavekṣya tu sugrīvaḥ krośantīṃ kurarīmiva.
28. ruroda sā patim dṛṣṭvā sanditam mṛtyudāmabhiḥ
tām avekṣya tu sugrīvaḥ krośantīm kurarīm iva
28. sā dṛṣṭvā mṛtyudāmabhiḥ sanditam patim ruroda
tu sugrīvaḥ krośantīm kurarīm iva tām avekṣya
28. She (Mandodari) wept, having seen her husband, as if bound by the snares of death. But Sugriva, having observed her wailing like a female osprey...
विषादमगमत् कष्टं
दृष्ट्वा चाङ्गदमागतम् ॥२९॥
29. viṣādamagamat kaṣṭaṃ
dṛṣṭvā cāṅgadamāgatam.
29. viṣādam agamat kaṣṭam
dṛṣṭvā ca aṅgadam āgatam
29. dṛṣṭvā āgatam aṅgadam ca
kaṣṭam viṣādam agamat
29. (Sugriva) was overcome with grievous dejection, having also seen Angada who had arrived.
