तं समीक्ष्य त्ववहितं पितुर्निर्देशपालने ।
कौसल्या बाष्पसंरुद्धा वचो धर्मिष्ठमब्रवीत् ॥१॥

1. Seeing him (Rama) attentive to the observance of his father's command, Kaushalya, choked with tears, spoke words most righteous (dharma).
अदृष्टदुःखो धर्मात्मा सर्वभूतप्रियंवदः ।
मयि जातो दशरथात् कथमुञ्छेन वर्तयेत् ॥२॥
2. adṛṣṭaduḥkho dharmātmā sarvabhūtapriyaṃvadaḥ ,
mayi jāto daśarathāt kathamuñchena vartayet.

2. How can he, a righteous (dharmātmā) soul who has never known sorrow, who speaks kindly to all beings, and who was born from me and from Daśaratha, sustain himself by gleaning (uñcha)?
यस्य भृत्याश्च दासाश्च मृष्टान्यन्नानि भुञ्जते ।
कथं स भोक्ष्यते नाथो वने मूलफलान्ययम् ॥३॥
3. yasya bhṛtyāśca dāsāśca mṛṣṭānyannāni bhuñjate ,
kathaṃ sa bhokṣyate nātho vane mūlaphalānyayam.
3. yasya bhṛtyāḥ ca dāsāḥ ca mṛṣṭāni annāni bhuñjate
katham saḥ bhokṣyate nāthaḥ vane mūlaphalāni ayam

3. How will this lord (nātha), whose servants and slaves partake of delicious meals, eat roots and fruits in the forest?
क एतच्छ्रद्दधेच्छ्रुत्वा कस्य वा न भवेद्भयम् ।
गुणवान्दयितो राज्ञो राघवो यद्विवास्यते ॥४॥
4. ka etacchraddadhecchrutvā kasya vā na bhavedbhayam ,
guṇavāndayito rājño rāghavo yadvivāsyate.
4. kaḥ etat śraddhadhet śrutvā kasya vā na bhavet
bhayam guṇavān dayitaḥ rājñaḥ rāghavaḥ yat vivāsyate
4. śrutvā kaḥ etat śraddhadhet,
vā kasya bhayam na bhavet,
yat rājñaḥ guṇavān dayitaḥ rāghavaḥ vivāsyate
4. Who would believe this upon hearing it? And whose fear would not arise, given that Rāghava, the king's virtuous and beloved (dayita) son, is being sent into exile?
त्वया विहीनामिह मां शोकाग्निरतुलो महान् ।
प्रधक्ष्यति यथा कक्षं चित्रभानुर्हिमात्यये ॥५॥
5. tvayā vihīnāmiha māṃ śokāgniratulo mahān ,
pradhakṣyati yathā kakṣaṃ citrabhānurhimātyaye.
5. tvayā vihīnām iha mām śokāgniḥ atulaḥ mahān
pradhakṣyati yathā kakṣam citrabhānuḥ himātyaye
5. iha tvayā vihīnām mām atulaḥ mahān śokāgniḥ pradhakṣyati,
yathā citrabhānuḥ himātyaye kakṣam (dahati)
5. Here, separated from you, an immense, incomparable fire of grief will consume me, just as a roaring fire (citrabhānu) burns dry grass at the end of winter.
कथं हि धेनुः स्वं वत्सं गच्छन्तं नानुगच्छति ।
अहं त्वानुगमिष्यामि यत्र पुत्र गमिष्यसि ॥६॥
6. kathaṃ hi dhenuḥ svaṃ vatsaṃ gacchantaṃ nānugacchati ,
ahaṃ tvānugamiṣyāmi yatra putra gamiṣyasi.
6. katham hi dhenuḥ svam vatsam gacchantam na
anugacchati aham tu anugamiṣyāmi yatra putra gamiṣyasi
6. dhenuḥ svam gacchantam vatsam katham hi na
anugacchati putra yatra gamiṣyasi aham tu anugamiṣyāmi
6. How indeed would a cow not follow its own calf as it goes? I, however, will follow wherever you, my son, go.
तथा निगदितं मात्रा तद्वाक्यं पुरुषर्षभः ।
श्रुत्वा रामो ऽब्रवीद्वाक्यं मातरं भृशदुःखिताम् ॥७॥
7. tathā nigaditaṃ mātrā tadvākyaṃ puruṣarṣabhaḥ ,
śrutvā rāmo'bravīdvākyaṃ mātaraṃ bhṛśaduḥkhitām.
7. tathā nigaditam mātrā tat vākyam puruṣarṣabhaḥ
śrutvā rāmaḥ abravīt vākyam mātaram bhṛśaduḥkhitām
7. mātrā tathā tat vākyam nigaditam puruṣarṣabhaḥ
rāmaḥ śrutvā bhṛśaduḥkhitām mātaram vākyam abravīt
7. When the mother had thus spoken those words, Rama, the best among men (puruṣarṣabha), having heard them, addressed his greatly distressed mother.
कैकेय्या वञ्चितो राजा मयि चारण्यमाश्रिते ।
भवत्या च परित्यक्तो न नूनं वर्तयिष्यति ॥८॥
8. kaikeyyā vañcito rājā mayi cāraṇyamāśrite ,
bhavatyā ca parityakto na nūnaṃ vartayiṣyati.
8. kaikeyyā vañcitaḥ rājā mayi ca araṇyam āśrite
bhavatyā ca parityaktaḥ na nūnam vartayiṣyati
8. rājā kaikeyyā vañcitaḥ mayi ca araṇyam āśrite
bhavatyā ca parityaktaḥ nūnam na vartayiṣyati
8. If the king is deceived by Kaikeyi, and I have gone to the forest, and he is abandoned by you, then he will certainly not survive.
भर्तुः किल परित्यागो नृशंसः केवलं स्त्रियाः ।
स भवत्या न कर्तव्यो मनसापि विगर्हितः ॥९॥
9. bhartuḥ kila parityāgo nṛśaṃsaḥ kevalaṃ striyāḥ ,
sa bhavatyā na kartavyo manasāpi vigarhitaḥ.
9. bhartuḥ kila parityāgaḥ nṛśaṃsaḥ kevalam striyāḥ
saḥ bhavatyā na kartavyaḥ manasā api vigarhitaḥ
9. striyāḥ bhartuḥ parityāgaḥ kila kevalam nṛśaṃsaḥ
manasā api vigarhitaḥ saḥ bhavatyā na kartavyaḥ
9. Indeed, abandoning one's husband is a cruel act for a woman. Such an act, reproached even mentally, should not be done by you.
यावज्जीवति काकुत्स्थः पिता मे जगतीपतिः ।
शुश्रूषा क्रियतां तावत् स हि धर्मः सनातनः ॥१०॥
10. yāvajjīvati kākutsthaḥ pitā me jagatīpatiḥ ,
śuśrūṣā kriyatāṃ tāvat sa hi dharmaḥ sanātanaḥ.
10. yāvat jīvati kākutsthaḥ pitā me jagatīpatiḥ
śuśrūṣā kriyatām tāvat sa hi dharmaḥ sanātanaḥ
10. me pitā kākutsthaḥ jagatīpatiḥ yāvat jīvati
tāvat śuśrūṣā kriyatām sa hi sanātanaḥ dharmaḥ
10. As long as my father, Kakutstha, the king of the earth, lives, service should be rendered to him. Indeed, that is the eternal natural law (dharma).
एवमुक्ता तु रामेण कौसल्या शुभ दर्शना ।
तथेत्युवाच सुप्रीता राममक्लिष्टकारिणम् ॥११॥
11. evamuktā tu rāmeṇa kausalyā śubha darśanā ,
tathetyuvāca suprītā rāmamakliṣṭakāriṇam.
11. evam uktā tu rāmeṇa kausalyā śubhadarśanā
tathā iti uvāca suprītā rāmam akliṣṭakāriṇam
11. rāmeṇa evam uktā tu śubhadarśanā kausalyā
suprītā akliṣṭakāriṇam rāmam tathā iti uvāca
11. Kausalya, who had an auspicious appearance, being thus addressed by Rama, was greatly pleased and said "So be it" to Rama, who always acted with ease and without difficulty.
एवमुक्तस्तु वचनं रामो धर्मभृतां वरः ।
भूयस्तामब्रवीद्वाक्यं मातरं भृशदुःखिताम् ॥१२॥
12. evamuktastu vacanaṃ rāmo dharmabhṛtāṃ varaḥ ,
bhūyastāmabravīdvākyaṃ mātaraṃ bhṛśaduḥkhitām.
12. evam uktaḥ tu vacanam rāmaḥ dharmabhṛtām varaḥ
bhūyaḥ tām abravīt vākyam mātaram bhṛśaduḥkhitām
12. evam uktaḥ tu dharmabhṛtām varaḥ rāmaḥ bhūyaḥ
tām bhṛśaduḥkhitām mātaram vacanam vākyam abravīt
12. But Rama, the foremost among those who uphold natural law (dharma), having thus been spoken to, again addressed his deeply distressed mother with these words.
मया चैव भवत्या च कर्तव्यं वचनं पितुः ।
राजा भर्ता गुरुः श्रेष्ठः सर्वेषामीश्वरः प्रभुः ॥१३॥
13. mayā caiva bhavatyā ca kartavyaṃ vacanaṃ pituḥ ,
rājā bhartā guruḥ śreṣṭhaḥ sarveṣāmīśvaraḥ prabhuḥ.
13. mayā ca eva bhavatyā ca kartavyam vacanam pituḥ
rājā bhartā guruḥ śreṣṭhaḥ sarveṣām īśvaraḥ prabhuḥ
13. mayā ca eva bhavatyā ca pituḥ vacanam kartavyam
rājā bhartā guruḥ śreṣṭhaḥ sarveṣām īśvaraḥ prabhuḥ
13. The command of the father must be obeyed by both me and you. For the king is the protector, the supreme preceptor (guru), the lord of all, and the master.
इमानि तु महारण्ये विहृत्य नव पञ्च च ।
वर्षाणि परमप्रीतः स्थास्यामि वचने तव ॥१४॥
14. imāni tu mahāraṇye vihṛtya nava pañca ca ,
varṣāṇi paramaprītaḥ sthāsyāmi vacane tava.
14. imāni tu mahāraṇye vihṛtya nava pañca ca
varṣāṇi paramaprītaḥ sthāsyāmi vacane tava
14. tu imāni nava pañca ca varṣāṇi mahāraṇye
vihṛtya tava vacane paramaprītaḥ sthāsyāmi
14. Indeed, having spent these fourteen years roaming in the great forest, I will remain extremely pleased, abiding by your word.
एवमुक्ता प्रियं पुत्रं बाष्पपूर्णानना तदा ।
उवाच परमार्ता तु कौसल्या पुत्रवत्सला ॥१५॥
15. evamuktā priyaṃ putraṃ bāṣpapūrṇānanā tadā ,
uvāca paramārtā tu kausalyā putravatsalā.
15. evam uktā priyam putram bāṣpapūrṇānanā tadā
uvāca paramārtā tu kausalyā putravatsalā
15. tadā evam uktā bāṣpapūrṇānanā putravatsalā
kausalyā tu paramārtā priyam putram uvāca
15. Thus addressed, Kausalya, whose face was full of tears and who deeply loved her son, then spoke to her dear son, being extremely distressed.
आसां राम सपत्नीनां वस्तुं मध्ये न मे क्षमम् ।
नय मामपि काकुत्स्थ वनं वन्यं मृगीं यथा ।
यदि ते गमने बुद्धिः कृता पितुरपेक्षया ॥१६॥
16. āsāṃ rāma sapatnīnāṃ vastuṃ madhye na me kṣamam ,
naya māmapi kākutstha vanaṃ vanyaṃ mṛgīṃ yathā ,
yadi te gamane buddhiḥ kṛtā piturapekṣayā.
16. āsām rāma sapatnīnām vastum madhye
na me kṣamam naya mām api kākutstha
vanam vanyām mṛgīm yathā yadi te
gamane buddhiḥ kṛtā pituḥ apekṣayā
16. rāma āsām sapatnīnām madhye vastum me na kṣamam (asti) kākutstha,
yadi te pituḥ apekṣayā gamane buddhiḥ kṛtā (asti),
(tadā) mām api vanyām mṛgīm yathā vanam naya
16. Rama, it is not bearable for me to dwell among these co-wives. O Kakutstha, if you have made up your mind to go, out of regard for your father, then take me also to the forest, just like a wild doe.
तां तथा रुदतीं रामो रुदन् वचनमब्रवीत् ।
जीवन्त्या हि स्त्रिया भर्ता दैवतं प्रभुरेव च ।
भवत्या मम चैवाद्य राजा प्रभवति प्रभुः ॥१७॥
17. tāṃ tathā rudatīṃ rāmo rudan vacanamabravīt ,
jīvantyā hi striyā bhartā daivataṃ prabhureva ca ,
bhavatyā mama caivādya rājā prabhavati prabhuḥ.
17. tām tathā rudatīm rāmaḥ rudan vacanam
abravīt jīvantyā hi striyā bhartā
daivatam prabhuḥ eva ca bhavatyā mama
ca eva adya rājā prabhavati prabhuḥ
17. rāmaḥ tām tathā rudatīm rudan vacanam
abravīt hi jīvantyāḥ striyāḥ bhartā
daivatam eva ca prabhuḥ (asti) adya ca
bhavatyāḥ mama eva rājā prabhuḥ prabhavati
17. To her, thus weeping, Rama himself, weeping, spoke these words: "Indeed, for a living woman, her husband is truly her deity and her master. And today, for both you and for me, the king (Daśaratha) is the sole master, exercising his authority."
भरतश्चापि धर्मात्मा सर्वभूतप्रियंवदः ।
भवतीमनुवर्तेत स हि धर्मरतः सदा ॥१८॥
18. bharataścāpi dharmātmā sarvabhūtapriyaṃvadaḥ ,
bhavatīmanuvarteta sa hi dharmarataḥ sadā.
18. bharataḥ ca api dharma-ātmā sarva-bhūta-priyaṃ-vadaḥ
bhavatīm anuvarteta sa hi dharma-rataḥ sadā
18. bharataḥ ca api dharma-ātmā sarva-bhūta-priyaṃ-vadaḥ
sa hi dharma-rataḥ sadā bhavatīm anuvarteta
18. Bharata, too, who is of a righteous (dharma) nature and speaks kindly to all beings, would surely follow you, for he is always devoted to righteousness (dharma).
यथा मयि तु निष्क्रान्ते पुत्रशोकेन पार्थिवः ।
श्रमं नावाप्नुयात् किं चिदप्रमत्ता तथा कुरु ॥१९॥
19. yathā mayi tu niṣkrānte putraśokena pārthivaḥ ,
śramaṃ nāvāpnuyāt kiṃ cidapramattā tathā kuru.
19. yathā mayi tu niṣkrānte putra-śokena pārthivaḥ
śramaṃ na avāpnuyāt kim cit apramattā tathā kuru
19. yathā mayi niṣkrānte tu putra-śokena pārthivaḥ kim cit śramaṃ na avāpnuyāt,
tathā apramattā kuru
19. Act diligently so that the king, once I have departed, does not experience any distress whatsoever due to his grief for his son.
व्रतोपवासनिरता या नारी परमोत्तमा ।
भर्तारं नानुवर्तेत सा च पापगतिर्भवेत् ॥२०॥
20. vratopavāsaniratā yā nārī paramottamā ,
bhartāraṃ nānuvarteta sā ca pāpagatirbhavet.
20. vrata-upavāsa-niratā yā nārī parama-uttamā
bhartāraṃ na anuvarteta sā ca pāpa-gatiḥ bhavet
20. yā nārī vrata-upavāsa-niratā parama-uttamā [api],
sā ca bhartāraṃ na anuvarteta [cet],
[tataḥ] pāpa-gatiḥ bhavet
20. A woman, even one who is supremely virtuous and dedicated to vows and fasts, if she does not follow her husband, will attain an unfortunate destination.
शुश्रूषमेव कुर्वीत भर्तुः प्रियहिते रता ।
एष धर्मः पुरा दृष्टो लोके वेदे श्रुतः स्मृतः ॥२१॥
21. śuśrūṣameva kurvīta bhartuḥ priyahite ratā ,
eṣa dharmaḥ purā dṛṣṭo loke vede śrutaḥ smṛtaḥ.
21. śuśrūṣām eva kurvīta bhartuḥ priya-hite ratā
eṣaḥ dharmaḥ purā dṛṣṭaḥ loke vede śrutaḥ smṛtaḥ
21. bhartuḥ priya-hite ratā [nārī] śuśrūṣām eva kurvīta.
eṣaḥ dharmaḥ purā dṛṣṭaḥ,
loke vede śrutaḥ [ca] smṛtaḥ [ca].
21. A woman should indeed perform service (śuśrūṣā), dedicated to what is pleasing and beneficial for her husband. This (conduct) is the natural law (dharma) that was recognized in ancient times, heard in the Vedas, and recalled in sacred texts.
पूज्यास्ते मत्कृते देवि ब्राह्मणाश्चैव सुव्रताः ।
एवं कालं प्रतीक्षस्व ममागमनकाङ्क्षिणी ॥२२॥
22. pūjyāste matkṛte devi brāhmaṇāścaiva suvratāḥ ,
evaṃ kālaṃ pratīkṣasva mamāgamanakāṅkṣiṇī.
22. pūjyāḥ te matkṛte devi brāhmaṇāḥ ca eva suvratāḥ
evam kālam pratīkṣasva mama āgamanakāṅkṣiṇī
22. devi matkṛte te suvratāḥ brāhmaṇāḥ ca eva pūjyāḥ
evam mama āgamanakāṅkṣiṇī kālam pratīkṣasva
22. O goddess, those virtuous Brahmins are to be revered for my sake. In this way, await the time, longing for my return.
प्राप्स्यसे परमं कामं मयि प्रत्यागते सति ।
यदि धर्मभृतां श्रेष्ठो धारयिष्यति जीवितम् ॥२३॥
23. prāpsyase paramaṃ kāmaṃ mayi pratyāgate sati ,
yadi dharmabhṛtāṃ śreṣṭho dhārayiṣyati jīvitam.
23. prāpsyase paramam kāmam mayi pratyāgate sati
yadi dharmabhṛtām śreṣṭhaḥ dhārayiṣyati jīvitam
23. mayi pratyāgate sati paramam kāmam prāpsyase
yadi dharmabhṛtām śreṣṭhaḥ jīvitam dhārayiṣyati
23. You will attain your highest desire when I have returned, provided the foremost among those who uphold natural law (dharma) sustains my life.
एवमुक्ता तु रामेण बाष्पपर्याकुलेक्षणा ।
कौसल्या पुत्रशोकार्ता रामं वचनमब्रवीत् ।
गच्छ पुत्र त्वमेकाग्रो भद्रं ते ऽस्तु सदा विभो ॥२४॥
24. evamuktā tu rāmeṇa bāṣpaparyākulekṣaṇā ,
kausalyā putraśokārtā rāmaṃ vacanamabravīt ,
gaccha putra tvamekāgro bhadraṃ te'stu sadā vibho.
24. evam uktā tu rāmeṇa bāṣpaparyākulekṣaṇā
kausalyā putraśokārtā rāmam
vacanam abravīt gaccha putra tvam
ekāgraḥ bhadram te astu sadā vibho
24. tu rāmeṇa evam uktā bāṣpaparyākulekṣaṇā
putraśokārtā kausalyā rāmam
vacanam abravīt putra tvam ekāgraḥ
gaccha vibho te bhadram sadā astu
24. Thus addressed by Rama, Kausalya, her eyes distressed by tears and her heart pained by grief for her son, spoke these words to Rama: 'Go, my son, be resolute. May you always be well, O powerful one.'
तथा हि रामं वनवासनिश्चितं समीक्ष्य देवी परमेण चेतसा ।
उवाच रामं शुभलक्षणं वचो बभूव च स्वस्त्ययनाभिकाङ्क्षिणी ॥२५॥
25. tathā hi rāmaṃ vanavāsaniścitaṃ samīkṣya devī parameṇa cetasā ,
uvāca rāmaṃ śubhalakṣaṇaṃ vaco babhūva ca svastyayanābhikāṅkṣiṇī.
25. tathā hi rāmam vanavāsaniścitam
samīkṣya devī parameṇa cetasā
uvāca rāmam śubhalakṣaṇam vacaḥ
babhūva ca svastyayanābhikāṅkṣiṇī
25. hi devī tathā vanavāsaniścitam
śubhalakṣaṇam rāmam parameṇa
cetasā samīkṣya rāmam vacaḥ uvāca
ca svastyayanābhikāṅkṣiṇī babhūva
25. Indeed, when the queen (Kausalya) saw Rama, who was resolved on forest exile, she spoke words to him, who bore auspicious marks, with a supreme heart, and she became desirous of his well-being (svastyayana).
