अथ तस्य निनादं तं सुग्रीवस्य महात्मनः ।
शुश्रावान्तःपुरगतो वाली भ्रातुरमर्षणः ॥१॥

1. Then, Valī, who was in the inner chambers, heard that roar of his great-souled brother Sugrīva, feeling indignant.
श्रुत्वा तु तस्य निनदं सर्वभूतप्रकम्पनम् ।
मदश्चैकपदे नष्टः क्रोधश्चापतितो महान् ॥२॥
2. śrutvā tu tasya ninadaṃ sarvabhūtaprakampanam ,
madaścaikapade naṣṭaḥ krodhaścāpatito mahān.

2. Upon hearing his terrifying roar that made all beings tremble, his arrogance (mada) vanished instantly, and a great fury descended upon him.
स तु रोषपरीताङ्गो वाली संध्यातपप्रभः ।
उपरक्त इवादित्यः सद्यो निष्प्रभतां गतः ॥३॥
3. sa tu roṣaparītāṅgo vālī saṃdhyātapaprabhaḥ ,
uparakta ivādityaḥ sadyo niṣprabhatāṃ gataḥ.
3. saḥ tu roṣaparītāṅgaḥ vālī sandhyātapaprabhaḥ
uparaktaḥ iva ādityaḥ sadyaḥ niṣprabhatām gataḥ

3. But Vali, whose body was enveloped in rage and whose glow was like the evening twilight, immediately lost his brilliance, just like the sun during an eclipse.
वाली दंष्ट्रा करालस्तु क्रोधाद्दीप्ताग्निसंनिभः ।
भात्युत्पतितपद्माभः समृणाल इव ह्रदः ॥४॥
4. vālī daṃṣṭrā karālastu krodhāddīptāgnisaṃnibhaḥ ,
bhātyutpatitapadmābhaḥ samṛṇāla iva hradaḥ.
4. vālī daṃṣṭrākarālaḥ tu krodhāt dīptāgnisaṃnibhaḥ
bhāti utpatitapadmābhaḥ samṛṇālaḥ iva hradaḥ

4. Vali, whose formidable fangs made him terrifying and who resembled a blazing fire due to anger, shone like a lake adorned with blossomed lotuses and their stalks.
शब्दं दुर्मर्षणं श्रुत्वा निष्पपात ततो हरिः ।
वेगेन चरणन्यासैर्दारयन्निव मेदिनीम् ॥५॥
5. śabdaṃ durmarṣaṇaṃ śrutvā niṣpapāta tato hariḥ ,
vegena caraṇanyāsairdārayanniva medinīm.
5. śabdam durmarṣaṇam śrutvā niṣpapāta tataḥ
hariḥ vegena caraṇanyāsaiḥ dārayan iva medinīm

5. Upon hearing that unbearable sound, Vali (Hari) then rushed forth swiftly, as if tearing the earth apart with his forceful strides.
तं तु तारा परिष्वज्य स्नेहाद्दर्शितसौहृदा ।
उवाच त्रस्तसंभ्रान्ता हितोदर्कमिदं वचः ॥६॥
6. taṃ tu tārā pariṣvajya snehāddarśitasauhṛdā ,
uvāca trastasaṃbhrāntā hitodarkamidaṃ vacaḥ.
6. tam tu tārā pariṣvajya snehāt darśita-sauhṛdā
uvāca trasta-saṃbhrāntā hitodarkam idam vacaḥ
6. tu tārā snehāt darśita-sauhṛdā trasta-saṃbhrāntā
tam pariṣvajya hitodarkam idam vacaḥ uvāca
6. But Tara, embracing him with affection and having shown her friendliness, terrified and bewildered, spoke these words which would lead to a beneficial outcome.
साधु क्रोधमिमं वीर नदी वेगमिवागतम् ।
शयनादुत्थितः काल्यं त्यज भुक्तामिव स्रजम् ॥७॥
7. sādhu krodhamimaṃ vīra nadī vegamivāgatam ,
śayanādutthitaḥ kālyaṃ tyaja bhuktāmiva srajam.
7. sādhu krodham imam vīra nadī vegam iva āgatam
śayanāt utthitaḥ kālyam tyaja bhuktām iva srajam
7. vīra sādhu nadī vegam iva āgatam imam krodham
śayanāt utthitaḥ kālyam bhuktām srajam iva tyaja
7. O hero, please abandon this anger, which has come upon you like a river's current. Having risen in the morning, cast it off as one discards a worn-out garland.
सहसा तव निष्क्रामो मम तावन्न रोचते ।
श्रूयतामभिधास्यामि यन्निमित्तं निवार्यसे ॥८॥
8. sahasā tava niṣkrāmo mama tāvanna rocate ,
śrūyatāmabhidhāsyāmi yannimittaṃ nivāryase.
8. sahasā tava niṣkrāmaḥ mama tāvat na rocate
śrūyatām abhidhāsyāmi yat-nimittam nivāryase
8. tava sahasā niṣkrāmaḥ mama tāvat na rocate.
śrūyatām,
yat-nimittam nivāryase abhidhāsyāmi
8. Your sudden departure does not please me at all right now. Please listen, I will tell you the reason why you are being restrained.
पूर्वमापतितः क्रोधात् स त्वामाह्वयते युधि ।
निष्पत्य च निरस्तस्ते हन्यमानो दिशो गतः ॥९॥
9. pūrvamāpatitaḥ krodhāt sa tvāmāhvayate yudhi ,
niṣpatya ca nirastaste hanyamāno diśo gataḥ.
9. pūrvam āpatitaḥ krodhāt sa tvām āhvayate yudhi
niṣpatya ca nirastaḥ te hanyamānaḥ diśaḥ gataḥ
9. pūrvam krodhāt āpatitaḥ sa tvām yudhi āhvayate
ca niṣpatya te nirastaḥ hanyamānaḥ diśaḥ gataḥ
9. Previously, having attacked you in anger, he challenges you in battle. But after rushing out, he was repelled by you, and being struck, he fled in all directions.
त्वया तस्य निरस्तस्य पीडितस्य विशेषतः ।
इहैत्य पुनराह्वानं शङ्कां जनयतीव मे ॥१०॥
10. tvayā tasya nirastasya pīḍitasya viśeṣataḥ ,
ihaitya punarāhvānaṃ śaṅkāṃ janayatīva me.
10. tvayā tasya nirastasya pīḍitasya viśeṣataḥ
iha etya punaḥ āhvānam śaṅkām janayati iva me
10. tvayā nirastasya pīḍitasya viśeṣataḥ tasya
iha etya punaḥ āhvānam me śaṅkām janayati iva
10. His renewed challenge, particularly after he was rejected and tormented by you, and his very return here, truly causes apprehension in me.
दर्पश्च व्यवसायश्च यादृशस्तस्य नर्दतः ।
निनादस्य च संरम्भो नैतदल्पं हि कारणम् ॥११॥
11. darpaśca vyavasāyaśca yādṛśastasya nardataḥ ,
ninādasya ca saṃrambho naitadalpaṃ hi kāraṇam.
11. darpaḥ ca vyavasāyaḥ ca yādṛśaḥ tasya nardataḥ
ninādasya ca saṃrambhaḥ na etat alpam hi kāraṇam
11. tasya nardataḥ yādṛśaḥ darpaḥ ca vyavasāyaḥ ca ninādasya ca saṃrambhaḥ,
etat alpam kāraṇam na hi
11. The pride and determination that he displays while roaring, and the vehemence of his outcry, are indeed not without significant reason.
नासहायमहं मन्ये सुग्रीवं तमिहागतम् ।
अवष्टब्धसहायश्च यमाश्रित्यैष गर्जति ॥१२॥
12. nāsahāyamahaṃ manye sugrīvaṃ tamihāgatam ,
avaṣṭabdhasahāyaśca yamāśrityaiṣa garjati.
12. na asahāyam aham manye sugrīvam tam iha āgatam
avaṣṭabdhahāyaḥ ca yam āśritya eṣaḥ garjati
12. aham iha āgatam tam sugrīvam asahāyam na manye.
ca yam āśritya eṣaḥ garjati (saḥ) avaṣṭabdhahāyaḥ (asti)
12. I do not believe that Sugrīva has come here without support. The one upon whom he relies, and due to whom he roars, is indeed a firm ally.
प्रकृत्या निपुणश्चैव बुद्धिमांश्चैव वानरः ।
अपरीक्षितवीर्येण सुग्रीवः सह नैष्यति ॥१३॥
13. prakṛtyā nipuṇaścaiva buddhimāṃścaiva vānaraḥ ,
aparīkṣitavīryeṇa sugrīvaḥ saha naiṣyati.
13. prakṛtyā nipuṇaḥ ca eva buddhimān ca eva vānaraḥ
aparīkṣitavīryeṇa sugrīvaḥ saha na eṣyati
13. vānaraḥ prakṛtyā nipuṇaḥ eva ca buddhimān eva ca.
sugrīvaḥ aparīkṣitavīryeṇa saha na eṣyati
13. Sugrīva, being a monkey (vānara), is by nature skillful and indeed intelligent. He would certainly not ally himself with someone whose strength has not been proven.
पूर्वमेव मया वीर श्रुतं कथयतो वचः ।
अङ्गदस्य कुमारस्य वक्ष्यामि त्वा हितं वचः ॥१४॥
14. pūrvameva mayā vīra śrutaṃ kathayato vacaḥ ,
aṅgadasya kumārasya vakṣyāmi tvā hitaṃ vacaḥ.
14. pūrvam eva mayā vīra śrutam kathayataḥ vacaḥ
aṅgadasya kumārasya vakṣyāmi tvā hitam vacaḥ
14. vīra mayā pūrvam eva kumārasya aṅgadasya
kathayataḥ vacaḥ śrutam tvā hitam vacaḥ vakṣyāmi
14. O hero, I have indeed heard the words spoken by Prince Angada earlier. (But now) I will speak beneficial words to you.
तव भ्रातुर्हि विख्यातः सहायो रणकर्कशः ।
रामः परबलामर्दी युगान्ताग्निरिवोत्थितः ॥१५॥
15. tava bhrāturhi vikhyātaḥ sahāyo raṇakarkaśaḥ ,
rāmaḥ parabalāmardī yugāntāgnirivotthitaḥ.
15. tava bhrātuḥ hi vikhyātaḥ sahāyaḥ raṇa-karkaśaḥ
rāmaḥ para-bala-amardī yugānta-agniḥ iva utthitaḥ
15. hi tava bhrātuḥ vikhyātaḥ raṇa-karkaśaḥ para-bala-amardī
sahāyaḥ rāmaḥ yugānta-agniḥ iva utthitaḥ
15. Indeed, your brother's well-known ally, Rama, who is formidable in battle and the destroyer of enemy forces, has arisen like the fire at the end of a cosmic age.
निवासवृक्षः साधूनामापन्नानां परा गतिः ।
आर्तानां संश्रयश्चैव यशसश्चैकभाजनम् ॥१६॥
16. nivāsavṛkṣaḥ sādhūnāmāpannānāṃ parā gatiḥ ,
ārtānāṃ saṃśrayaścaiva yaśasaścaikabhājanam.
16. nivāsa-vṛkṣaḥ sādhūnām āpannānām parā gatiḥ
ārtānām saṃśrayaḥ ca eva yaśasaḥ ca eka-bhājanam
16. sādhūnām nivāsa-vṛkṣaḥ āpannānām parā gatiḥ
ārtānām ca eva saṃśrayaḥ yaśasaḥ ca eka-bhājanam
16. He is a shelter-tree for the virtuous, the ultimate refuge for those in distress, indeed a protector for the afflicted, and the sole vessel of glory.
ज्ञानविज्ञानसंपन्नो निदेशो निरतः पितुः ।
धातूनामिव शैलेन्द्रो गुणानामाकरो महान् ॥१७॥
17. jñānavijñānasaṃpanno nideśo nirataḥ pituḥ ,
dhātūnāmiva śailendro guṇānāmākaro mahān.
17. jñāna-vijñāna-sampannaḥ nideśaḥ nirataḥ pituḥ
dhātūnām iva śailendraḥ guṇānām ākaraḥ mahān
17. jñāna-vijñāna-sampannaḥ nideśaḥ pituḥ nirataḥ
dhātūnām iva śailendraḥ guṇānām mahān ākaraḥ
17. He is endowed with both theoretical knowledge (jñāna) and practical wisdom (vijñāna), and is obedient and devoted to his father. He is a great mine of virtues, just as the lord of mountains is a source of precious minerals.
तत्क्षमं न विरोधस्ते सह तेन महात्मना ।
दुर्जयेनाप्रमेयेन रामेण रणकर्मसु ॥१८॥
18. tatkṣamaṃ na virodhaste saha tena mahātmanā ,
durjayenāprameyena rāmeṇa raṇakarmasu.
18. tat kṣamam na virodhaḥ te saha tena mahātmanā
durjayena aprameyena rāmeṇa raṇakarmasu
18. tat te raṇakarmasu tena mahātmanā durjayena
aprameyena rāmeṇa saha virodhaḥ na kṣamam
18. Therefore, it is not appropriate for you to have a conflict with that great-souled (mahātman), unconquerable, and incomparable Rama in battles.
शूर वक्ष्यामि ते किं चिन्न चेच्छाम्यभ्यसूयितुम् ।
श्रूयतां क्रियतां चैव तव वक्ष्यामि यद्धितम् ॥१९॥
19. śūra vakṣyāmi te kiṃ cinna cecchāmyabhyasūyitum ,
śrūyatāṃ kriyatāṃ caiva tava vakṣyāmi yaddhitam.
19. śūra vakṣyāmi te kim cit na cet icchāmi abhyasūyitum
śrūyatām kriyatām ca eva tava vakṣyāmi yat hitam
19. śūra te kim cit vakṣyāmi; na cet abhyasūyitum icchāmi.
yat tava hitam (tat) śrūyatām eva ca kriyatām (iti) vakṣyāmi.
19. O hero, I will tell you something; I do not wish to find fault with you. What I will tell you is beneficial, so let it be heard and also put into practice.
यौवराज्येन सुग्रीवं तूर्णं साध्वभिषेचय ।
विग्रहं मा कृथा वीर भ्रात्रा राजन्बलीयसा ॥२०॥
20. yauvarājyena sugrīvaṃ tūrṇaṃ sādhvabhiṣecaya ,
vigrahaṃ mā kṛthā vīra bhrātrā rājanbalīyasā.
20. yauvarājyena sugrīvam tūrṇam sādhu abhiṣecaya
vigraham mā kṛthāḥ vīra bhrātrā rājan balīyasā
20. rājan vīra tūrṇam sādhu yauvarājyena sugrīvam abhiṣecaya.
balīyasā bhrātrā saha vigraham mā kṛthāḥ.
20. O king (rājan), quickly and properly consecrate Sugriva as the crown prince. O hero, do not engage in conflict with your more powerful brother.
अहं हि ते क्षमं मन्ये तव रामेण सौहृदम् ।
सुग्रीवेण च संप्रीतिं वैरमुत्सृज्य दूरतः ॥२१॥
21. ahaṃ hi te kṣamaṃ manye tava rāmeṇa sauhṛdam ,
sugrīveṇa ca saṃprītiṃ vairamutsṛjya dūrataḥ.
21. aham hi te kṣamam manye tava rāmeṇa sauhṛdam
sugrīveṇa ca samprītim vairam utsṛjya dūrataḥ
21. aham hi te kṣamam manye: tava rāmeṇa sauhṛdam,
sugrīveṇa ca samprītim (asti iti manye),
vairam dūrataḥ utsṛjya.
21. Indeed, I believe that friendship with Rama and good will towards Sugriva are beneficial for you, having completely abandoned hostility (vaira) far away.
लालनीयो हि ते भ्राता यवीयानेष वानरः ।
तत्र वा सन्निहस्थो वा सर्वथा बन्धुरेव ते ॥२२॥
22. lālanīyo hi te bhrātā yavīyāneṣa vānaraḥ ,
tatra vā sannihastho vā sarvathā bandhureva te.
22. lālanīyaḥ hi te bhrātā yavīyān eṣaḥ vānaraḥ
tatra vā sannihasthaḥ vā sarvathā bandhuḥ eva te
22. eṣaḥ yavīyān vānaraḥ te bhrātā hi lālanīyaḥ
tatra vā sannihasthaḥ vā sarvathā te bandhuḥ eva
22. This younger monkey is indeed your brother and should be cherished. Whether he is there or stays here, he is always your kinsman.
यदि ते मत्प्रियं कार्यं यदि चावैषि मां हिताम् ।
याच्यमानः प्रयत्नेन साधु वाक्यं कुरुष्व मे ॥२३॥
23. yadi te matpriyaṃ kāryaṃ yadi cāvaiṣi māṃ hitām ,
yācyamānaḥ prayatnena sādhu vākyaṃ kuruṣva me.
23. yadi te mat-priyam kāryam yadi ca avaiṣi mām hitām
yācyamānaḥ prayatnena sādhu vākyam kuruṣva me
23. yadi te mat-priyam kāryam ca yadi mām hitām avaiṣi
prayatnena yācyamānaḥ me sādhu vākyam kuruṣva
23. If you wish to do what is pleasing to me, and if you consider me beneficial, then, being earnestly implored, please do this good thing for me.
