तमप्रतिहतं क्रुद्धं प्रविष्टं पुरुषर्षभम् ।
सुग्रीवो लक्ष्मणं दृष्ट्वा बभूव व्यथितेन्द्रियः ॥१॥

1. Upon seeing Lakshmana, who was furious, unrestrained, and had entered like a mighty bull among men, Sugriva became greatly distressed in his senses.
क्रुद्धं निःश्वसमानं तं प्रदीप्तमिव तेजसा ।
भ्रातुर्व्यसनसंतप्तं दृष्ट्वा दशरथात्मजम् ॥२॥
2. kruddhaṃ niḥśvasamānaṃ taṃ pradīptamiva tejasā ,
bhrāturvyasanasaṃtaptaṃ dṛṣṭvā daśarathātmajam.

bhrātuḥ vyasanasaṃtaptam dṛṣṭvā daśarathātmajam

2. And having seen him (Lakshmana), the son of Dasharatha (Daśarathātmaja), who was angry, sighing heavily, as if blazing with fiery energy (tejas), and tormented by his brother's (Rama's) misfortune.
उत्पपात हरिश्रेष्ठो हित्वा सौवर्णमासनम् ।
महान्महेन्द्रस्य यथा स्वलंकृत इव ध्वजः ॥३॥
3. utpapāta hariśreṣṭho hitvā sauvarṇamāsanam ,
mahānmahendrasya yathā svalaṃkṛta iva dhvajaḥ.

3. The best among the monkeys (Sugriva) sprang up, abandoning his golden seat, just as a great, well-adorned banner of Mahendra (Indra) might rise.
उत्पतन्तमनूत्पेतू रुमाप्रभृतयः स्त्रियः ।
सुग्रीवं गगने पूर्णं चन्द्रं तारागणा इव ॥४॥
4. utpatantamanūtpetū rumāprabhṛtayaḥ striyaḥ ,
sugrīvaṃ gagane pūrṇaṃ candraṃ tārāgaṇā iva.
4. utpatantam anu utpetuḥ rumāprabhṛtayaḥ striyaḥ
sugrīvam gagane pūrṇam candram tārāgaṇāḥ iva

4. Ruma and the other women rose up, following him (Sugriva) as he ascended, just as hosts of stars follow the full moon in the sky.
संरक्तनयनः श्रीमान् विचचाल कृताञ्जलिः ।
बभूवावस्थितस्तत्र कल्पवृक्षो महानिव ॥५॥
5. saṃraktanayanaḥ śrīmān vicacāla kṛtāñjaliḥ ,
babhūvāvasthitastatra kalpavṛkṣo mahāniva.
5. saṃrakta-nayanaḥ śrīmān vicacāla kṛta-añjaliḥ
babhūva avasthitaḥ tatra kalpavṛkṣaḥ mahān iva
5. śrīmān saṃraktanayanaḥ kṛtāñjaliḥ vicacāla
tatra mahān kalpavṛkṣaḥ iva avasthitaḥ babhūva
5. With bloodshot eyes, the glorious one swayed, having made a reverent gesture. He then stood firm there, like a great wish-fulfilling tree (kalpavṛkṣa).
रुमा द्वितीयं सुग्रीवं नारीमध्यगतं स्थितम् ।
अब्रवील् लक्ष्मणः क्रुद्धः सतारं शशिनं यथा ॥६॥
6. rumā dvitīyaṃ sugrīvaṃ nārīmadhyagataṃ sthitam ,
abravīl lakṣmaṇaḥ kruddhaḥ satāraṃ śaśinaṃ yathā.
6. Rumā dvitīyam Sugrīvam nārī-madhya-gatam sthitam
abravīt Lakṣmaṇaḥ kruddhaḥ sa-tāram śaśinam yathā
6. kruddhaḥ Lakṣmaṇaḥ Rumā dvitīyam nārīmadhyagatam sthitam Sugrīvam,
satāram śaśinam yathā,
abravīt
6. Lakshmana, enraged, spoke to Sugrīva, who was accompanied by Ruma and surrounded by women, just as (one speaks to) the moon accompanied by its stars.
सत्त्वाभिजनसंपन्नः सानुक्रोशो जितेन्द्रियः ।
कृतज्ञः सत्यवादी च राजा लोके महीयते ॥७॥
7. sattvābhijanasaṃpannaḥ sānukrośo jitendriyaḥ ,
kṛtajñaḥ satyavādī ca rājā loke mahīyate.
7. sattva-abhijana-sampannaḥ sa-anukrośaḥ jita-indriyaḥ
kṛtajñaḥ satya-vādī ca rājā loke mahīyate
7. sattvābhijanasampannaḥ sānukrośaḥ jitendriyaḥ
kṛtajñaḥ satyavādī ca rājā loke mahīyate
7. A king who is endowed with vigor and noble birth, compassionate, self-controlled (jitendriya), grateful, and truthful is greatly honored in the world.
यस्तु राजा स्थितो ऽधर्मे मित्राणामुपकारिणाम् ।
मिथ्याप्रतिज्ञां कुरुते को नृशंसतरस्ततः ॥८॥
8. yastu rājā sthito'dharme mitrāṇāmupakāriṇām ,
mithyāpratijñāṃ kurute ko nṛśaṃsatarastataḥ.
8. yaḥ tu rājā sthitaḥ a-dharme mitrāṇām upakāriṇām
mithyā-pratijñām kurute kaḥ nṛśaṃsataraḥ tataḥ
8. tu yaḥ rājā adharme sthitaḥ,
upakāriṇām mitrāṇām mithyāpratijñām kurute,
tataḥ kaḥ nṛśaṃsataraḥ?
8. But a king who abides in unrighteousness (adharma) and makes false promises to his helpful friends - who is more cruel than such a one?
शतमश्वानृते हन्ति सहस्रं तु गवानृते ।
आत्मानं स्वजनं हन्ति पुरुषः पुरुषानृते ॥९॥
9. śatamaśvānṛte hanti sahasraṃ tu gavānṛte ,
ātmānaṃ svajanaṃ hanti puruṣaḥ puruṣānṛte.
9. śatam aśvānṛte hanti sahasram tu gavānṛte
ātmānam svajanam hanti puruṣaḥ puruṣānṛte
9. puruṣaḥ aśvānṛte śatam hanti tu gavānṛte
sahasram hanti puruṣānṛte ātmānam svajanam hanti
9. A falsehood (anṛta) concerning horses destroys (the merit of) a hundred horses. But a falsehood concerning cows destroys (the merit of) a thousand cows. A man who utters a falsehood (anṛta) concerning a person destroys himself and his own people (svajana), and his very self (ātman).
पूर्वं कृतार्थो मित्राणां न तत् प्रतिकरोति यः ।
कृतघ्नः सर्वभूतानां स वध्यः प्लवगेश्वर ॥१०॥
10. pūrvaṃ kṛtārtho mitrāṇāṃ na tat pratikaroti yaḥ ,
kṛtaghnaḥ sarvabhūtānāṃ sa vadhyaḥ plavageśvara.
10. pūrvam kṛtārthaḥ mitrāṇām na tat pratikaroti yaḥ
kṛtaghnaḥ sarvabhūtānām saḥ vadhyaḥ plavageśvara
10. plavageśvara yaḥ pūrvam mitrāṇām kṛtārthaḥ tat na
pratikaroti saḥ sarvabhūtānām kṛtaghnaḥ vadhyaḥ
10. O lord of monkeys (plavageśvara), he who, having formerly received a favor from friends, does not return it, and is thus ungrateful (kṛtaghna) to all beings, is worthy of being killed.
गीतो ऽयं ब्रह्मणा श्लोकः सर्वलोकनमस्कृतः ।
दृष्ट्वा कृतघ्नं क्रुद्धेन तं निबोध प्लवंगम ॥११॥
11. gīto'yaṃ brahmaṇā ślokaḥ sarvalokanamaskṛtaḥ ,
dṛṣṭvā kṛtaghnaṃ kruddhena taṃ nibodha plavaṃgama.
11. gītaḥ ayam brahmaṇā ślokaḥ sarvalokanamaskṛtaḥ
dṛṣṭvā kṛtaghnam kruddhena tam nibodha plavaṅgama
11. plavaṅgama ayam ślokaḥ brahmaṇā gītaḥ sarvalokanamaskṛtaḥ.
kruddhena brahmaṇā kṛtaghnam dṛṣṭvā tam nibodha
11. O monkey (plavaṅgama), understand this verse, which was sung by Brahmā (brahman) and is revered by all worlds. Brahmā, having seen an ungrateful person (kṛtaghna), spoke it in anger.
ब्रह्मघ्ने च सुरापे च चोरे भग्नव्रते तथा ।
निष्कृतिर्विहिता सद्भिः कृतघ्ने नास्ति निष्कृतिः ॥१२॥
12. brahmaghne ca surāpe ca core bhagnavrate tathā ,
niṣkṛtirvihitā sadbhiḥ kṛtaghne nāsti niṣkṛtiḥ.
12. brahmaghne ca surāpe ca core bhagnavrate tathā
niṣkṛtiḥ vihitā sadbhiḥ kṛtaghne na asti niṣkṛtiḥ
12. sadbhiḥ brahmaghne ca surāpe ca core ca tathā bhagnavrate niṣkṛtiḥ vihitā.
kṛtaghne tu niṣkṛtiḥ na asti
12. Atonement (niṣkṛti) has been prescribed by the virtuous for a killer of a Brahmin (brahmahan), for a drunkard, for a thief, and for one who has broken vows. However, for an ungrateful person (kṛtaghna), there is no atonement (niṣkṛti).
अनार्यस्त्वं कृतघ्नश्च मिथ्यावादी च वानर ।
पूर्वं कृतार्थो रामस्य न तत् प्रतिकरोषि यत् ॥१३॥
13. anāryastvaṃ kṛtaghnaśca mithyāvādī ca vānara ,
pūrvaṃ kṛtārtho rāmasya na tat pratikaroṣi yat.
13. anāryaḥ tvam kṛtaghnaḥ ca mithyāvādī ca vānara
pūrvam kṛtārthaḥ rāmasya na tat pratikaroṣi yat
13. vānara! tvam anāryaḥ ca kṛtaghnaḥ ca mithyāvādī ca.
pūrvam rāmasya kṛtārthaḥ [tvam asi],
yat tat na pratikaroṣi.
13. O monkey, you are ignoble, ungrateful, and a liar. Though Rama previously fulfilled your purpose, you do not repay that favor.
ननु नाम कृतार्थेन त्वया रामस्य वानर ।
सीताया मार्गणे यत्नः कर्तव्यः कृतमिच्छता ॥१४॥
14. nanu nāma kṛtārthena tvayā rāmasya vānara ,
sītāyā mārgaṇe yatnaḥ kartavyaḥ kṛtamicchatā.
14. nanu nāma kṛtārthena tvayā rāmasya vānara
sītāyāḥ mārgaṇe yatnaḥ kartavyaḥ kṛtam icchatā
14. vānara! nanu nāma rāmasya kṛtārthena tvayā kṛtam icchatā sītāyāḥ mārgaṇe yatnaḥ kartavyaḥ.
14. Surely, O monkey, since Rama has fulfilled your purpose, you, wishing to repay that favor, ought to make an effort in the search for Sita.
स त्वं ग्राम्येषु भोगेषु सक्तो मिथ्या प्रतिश्रवः ।
न त्वां रामो विजानीते सर्पं मण्डूकराविणम् ॥१५॥
15. sa tvaṃ grāmyeṣu bhogeṣu sakto mithyā pratiśravaḥ ,
na tvāṃ rāmo vijānīte sarpaṃ maṇḍūkarāviṇam.
15. saḥ tvam grāmyeṣu bhogeṣu saktaḥ mithyā pratiśravaḥ
na tvām rāmaḥ vijānīte sarpam maṇḍūkarāviṇam
15. saḥ tvam grāmyeṣu bhogeṣu saktaḥ [asi] mithyā pratiśravaḥ [ca asi].
rāmaḥ tvām sarpam maṇḍūkarāviṇam [iva] na vijānīte.
15. You, that very person, addicted to common pleasures and having made false promises – Rama does not truly know you. You are like a snake that croaks like a frog.
महाभागेन रामेण पापः करुणवेदिना ।
हरीणां प्रापितो राज्यं त्वं दुरात्मा महात्मना ॥१६॥
16. mahābhāgena rāmeṇa pāpaḥ karuṇavedinā ,
harīṇāṃ prāpito rājyaṃ tvaṃ durātmā mahātmanā.
16. mahābhāgena rāmeṇa pāpaḥ karuṇavedinā harīṇām
prāpitaḥ rājyam tvam durātmā mahātmanā
16. mahābhāgena karuṇavedinā mahātmanā rāmeṇa,
pāpaḥ durātmā tvam harīṇām rājyam prāpitaḥ.
16. You, a sinful and wicked soul, were caused to obtain the kingdom of the monkeys by Rama, who is greatly noble, compassionate, and magnanimous.
कृतं चेन्नाभिजानीषे रामस्याक्लिष्टकर्मणः ।
सद्यस्त्वं निशितैर्बाणैर्हतो द्रक्ष्यसि वालिनम् ॥१७॥
17. kṛtaṃ cennābhijānīṣe rāmasyākliṣṭakarmaṇaḥ ,
sadyastvaṃ niśitairbāṇairhato drakṣyasi vālinam.
17. kṛtam cet na abhijānīṣe rāmasya akliṣṭakarmaṇaḥ
sadyaḥ tvam niśitaiḥ bāṇaiḥ hataḥ drakṣyasi vālinam
17. cet tvam rāmasya akliṣṭakarmaṇaḥ kṛtam na abhijānīṣe
sadyaḥ niśitaiḥ bāṇaiḥ hataḥ vālinam drakṣyasi
17. If you do not acknowledge the deed of Rama, whose actions (karma) are unblemished, you yourself will be killed by sharp arrows and immediately see Valin.
न च संकुचितः पन्था येन वाली हतो गतः ।
समये तिष्ठ सुग्रीव मा वालिपथमन्वगाः ॥१८॥
18. na ca saṃkucitaḥ panthā yena vālī hato gataḥ ,
samaye tiṣṭha sugrīva mā vālipathamanvagāḥ.
18. na ca saṃkucitaḥ panthā yena vālī hataḥ gataḥ
samaye tiṣṭha sugrīva mā vālipatham anvagāḥ
18. he sugrīva samaye tiṣṭha ca vālipatham mā anvagāḥ
yena hataḥ vālī gataḥ panthā na saṃkucitaḥ
18. The path by which Valin departed, having been slain, is not restricted. O Sugriva, abide by your promise, and do not follow the path of Valin.
न नूनमिक्ष्वाकुवरस्य कार्मुकाच्च्युताञ् शरान्पश्यसि वज्रसंनिभान् ।
ततः सुखं नाम निषेवसे सुखी न रामकार्यं मनसाप्यवेक्षसे ॥१९॥
19. na nūnamikṣvākuvarasya kārmukāccyutāñ śarānpaśyasi vajrasaṃnibhān ,
tataḥ sukhaṃ nāma niṣevase sukhī na rāmakāryaṃ manasāpyavekṣase.
19. na nūnam ikṣvākuvarasya kārmukāt
cyutān śarān paśyasi vajrasaṃnibhān
tataḥ sukham nāma niṣevase sukhī
na rāmakāryam manasā api avekṣase
19. nūnam tvam ikṣvākuvarasya kārmukāt
cyutān vajrasaṃnibhān śarān na paśyasi
tataḥ sukhī nāma sukham niṣevase
na ca manasā api rāmakāryam avekṣase
19. Surely you do not see the arrows, resembling thunderbolts, that are discharged from the bow of Rama, the best of the Ikshvakus. Therefore, you, being joyful, merely indulge in pleasure, and do not even mentally consider Rama's task.
